The ever changing conditions in the coal-mining industry and the increasing competition of other fuels such as oil, natural gas, wood refuse, etc., have made it imperative that the coal operator be in a position to supply a constantly uniform and clean product. The old idea of putting on the market "anything so long as it's black" no longer holds good. Today's users of fuel have to consider the amount of heat per dollar they obtain from the fuel they buy. Burning of coal has become largely mechanical, at least so far as industrial coal is concerned, and industrial coal is the kind the bituminous operator is for the most part called upon to supply. When we get into things mechanical, the matter of precision has a mighty bearing on efficiency. Precision in coal means standardization of quality, or uniformity of preparation in size and also in ash and moisture content. The trend of coal mining is ever towards more and more mechanization. Mechanization means coal-cutting machinery, loading machinery, conveying machinery, etc. Although such methods cut the cost, the cleanliness of coal so mined and loaded is not controllable to the same extent as when each operation is by hand labour. The operator has therefore the problem of mining his coal as cheaply as possible, but at the same time preparing a product which will to the utmost satisfy his customer. The answer is a mechanical cleaning plant. Before installing a cleaning plant, however, the operator must take into consideration the cleansability of the coal from his particular mine. This is accomplished by taking representative samples of the seam or seams to be treated, and subjecting these to screen tests, followed by float and sink tests on each size product. From these tests, it can be readily found to what degree of cleanliness the several sizes can be prepared advantageously, and also what will be the percentage recovery of cleaned coal. The accompanying tables give the results of representative tests on Michel coals of minus-2-inch size. All coal over 2-inc.h was intended to be hand cleaned. The coal-cleaning plants in general use at the present time come under two broad classifications, namely, wet and dry.

Mother Earth being a treasure of minerals, it is prime duty of the mankind to preserve this natural source to ensure steady growth of the nation. Utmost care is to be taken to see that these natural resources are explored and exploited scientifically in a sustained manner to ensure that the resource base improves and last longer. In this backdrop, the topic of ?Lignite - its resource and technology options to exploit deep seated deposits? is an apt subject to be deliberated upon in the present context, where the shallow deposits may slowly get dwindled. I shall deliberate upon the resource base of lignite, production profiles of the last five decades, consumption pattern, demand / supply projections, future available technology options to exploit the deep seated deposits, growth trends of the sector etc. in my paper. With the available resource base and future technology options, I can confidentially make a statement that ?lignite will remain as cocontributor along with coal to India?s energy generation and may well maintain its same status in the 21st century too, as it has been in the later part of the twentieth century?.

"In China, approximately 65% of coal reserves are in the west region, where water shortage is a serious problem: high-efficiency dry coal beneficiation technology is desired. Using magnetic powder and fine coal as heavy medium, and using air as the fluidizing agent, a novel air dense medium fluidized bed separator is proposed for coal preparation. Coal can be efficiently separated according to density in the fluidized bed, where bed density is steady. The separator is highly reliable, the circulation quantity of heavy medium is low, and the gas distributor cannot be easily easily. The world’s first industrial modularized dry coal preparation plant was built by China University of Mining and Technology. Dry coal beneficiation technology was first used to produce low-ash coal. Results of industrial production show that the ash content of clean coal is 3.46%, the probable error E value is 0.055 g/cm3, and the organic efficiency is over 90%. The advantages of the modularized dry coal beneficiation system are the high separation accuracy, the simple process flow, the low operation cost, low energy consumption, and so on. This technology provides a new effective method for coal separation in acid region and coal tending to sliming.INTRODUCTIONCoal is the most important primary energy source in China, where coal output reached 3.68 billion tons in 2013 and represents approximately 68% of the primary energy consumption. Coal has made a great contribution to the development of the Chinese national economy, but it also brings serious environmental pollution. However, approximately 65% of coal reserves are in the arid west region in China where water shortages present a challenge for wet coal preparation technology. In addition, the abundant lignite resource, because it is easy to mud in the water, should not be treated with the wet separation method. Therefore, it is critical to develop highly efficient dry coal preparation technology to meet the demand in arid areas. Further, water resource shortages are a global problem, thus the development of efficient dry coal preparation technology in has potential application in other water-short countries like South Africa, Brazil, India and Turkey."

This paper analyzed the feasibility of converting a 5kW natural gas SOFC power generator system designed to operate on natural gas to be fuelled by methanol. The analysis included laboratory methanol fuel processing experimentation, methanol reformate SOFC cell testing, and SOFC system mass and energy balance modelling. Methanol fuel processing experimentation indicated that theoretical reformate compositions can be achieved for high temperature (600-900°C) methanol steam reforming. A 6% open circuit voltage decrease and a 10% peak power current density decrease between cell operation on humidified hydrogen and methanol reformate was observed. SOFC system mass and energy balance modelling indicated that a natural gas SOFC system can be converted to operate on methanol fuel with minimal (1%) efficiency impacts, however the systems' thermal integration can be impacted.

Several studied have recently shown that the use of non-wetting additives is not always a sufficient solution to improve the corrosion resistance of refractories against molten aluminum. Once in contact with liquid aluminum, the coarse aluminosilicate aggregates, which do not benefit from the protective effect of non-wetting additives in the matrix, may be corroded. In some cases, the corrosion of aggregates, especially those containing a significant amount of free silica and/or alkalis, promotes corrosion in the surrounding matrix. The present work explores the possibility to protect the poor corrosion resistant aggregates via a lining procedure. A slip casting method, using either alumina or celsian-like composition based slurries, has been applied for lining of a series of aggregates. The results from this study show that such linings may prevent efficiently the corrosion of aluminosilicate aggregates. This work also analyzes the effects of firing temperature and lining quality on the corrosion behavior of aggregates

With air emission limits for total particulates continually tightening, management of `potroom dust' or airborne particulates from aluminium smelting potrooms is of increasing importance. To better understand how settled and airborne particulates are generated within a potroom, methodologies have been developed to sample and analyse the compositional signature of dust, in relation to its sources. During a smelter case study, these methods allowed tracking of mineralogical phases in dust across a range of potroom locations, showing that the mechanisms of dust generation do vary spatially and vertically in a potroom. Such methodologies may also be applicable to other metallurgical industries.

"Spiral concentrators are used for processing coal and heavy minerals such as it is the case for the concentration of iron oxide from light silica gangue. The concentration process for iron ore usually consists of a rougher bank of spirals followed by two stages of spiral cleaning. The process control applied to the concentration circuit aims at maintaining a target iron content of the final concentrate and is mainly conducted by adjusting the wash water addition and the position of the splitter gates at the discharge of the spiral. This paper describes the use of a simulator to study control strategies for a gravity concentration circuit using spirals.INTRODUCTION The Canadian iron ore mines are located in the Northern part of Quebec and in Labrador (Neal, 2000). These iron ores consist mainly of hematite with some ore bodies rich in magnetite and ilmenite. The processing of the coarse hematite iron ore consists of the extraction from an open pit mine, followed by the conventional crushing and autogeneous grinding of the ore to obtain a particle size smaller than 1.2 mm. The ground ore assaying 40% hematite (Fe2O3) with quartz (SiO2) as the main gangue is processed by spirals to produce an iron oxide concentrate assaying 90 to 95% hematite.Spirals separate the particles according to their specific gravity and size (Burt, 1984; Bazin et al., 2014). These environment friendly devices have been used for decades and are still used for the preparation of coal and for the concentration of heavy minerals such as iron oxide (Staff, 1977; Wills, 1992). However very little information is available concerning the control of gravity concentration circuits. This paper analyzes the control practice of a gravity concentration circuit using a simulator. The paper consists of 3 sections. The first section describes the operation of spirals and spiral concentration circuits. The second section briefly describes the simulator and shows some simulation results for a gravity concentration circuit. The third section shows the application of the simulator for the study of control strategies for a spiral concentration circuit."

"AbstractWear of six types of grinding balls was compared with and without corrosion inhibition in grinding Ni-Cu sulphide and hematite ores in laboratory ball mills. Forged steel balls (Rc 60 to 65) and three types of white cast iron balls (Rc 50 to 65) were susceptible to corrosive wear and two types of stainless steel balls [AISI Type 440C (Rc 65) and AISI Type 302 is; 35)] were relatively immune. The relative wear rates of the five types of hard balls (Rc 50 to 65) were dependent on the corrosivity of the ore. Ranking of the hard balls with respect to wear resistance was consistent for the sulphide and hematite ores in the presence of corrosion inhibition, whereas their ranking was different for the two ores in the absence of inhibition.The electrochemical potential of the grinding balls was measured during grinding and was found to be a useful measurement for assessing the susceptibility of an alloy to corrosive wear. Reduction of ball wear for forged steel and white cast irons with corrosion inhibition was concomitant with a shift of ball potential to less active values. Ball potentials in the presence of inhibition were indicative of non-corroding metal surfaces.IntroductionA PREVIOUS STUDY by the authors (1) showed that corrosion inhibitors - sodium nitrite, sodium chromate and sodium metasilicate - reduced wear of forged steel grinding balls by up to 49% in grinding Ni-Cu sulphide ore. Although the mechanism of wear reduction was not elucidated, it was concluded that corrosion must play a significant role in the wear of grinding media. Remark and Wick (2) of Battelle Pacific Northwest Laboratories have also evaluated corrosion inhibitors for the reduction of metal wear using abrasive and n on- abrasive te sting procedures. Their research was sponsored by 16 companies throughout the world. Preliminary results indicated that anodic inhibitors prevent from one-fourth to one-half of the loss due to corrosion."

THE Eastern Townships of Quebec have been the chief Canadian source of chromite. Production, however, has never been large and, except for a period of steady but small output between 1894 and 1909, mining has been active only in war time. The known deposits are too small or too low grade to compete with overseas sources in normal times. During the last war, shipping difficulties and a greatly increased demand in the United States resulted in high prices and a ready market for low-.grade material. The Quebec chromite industry flourished and played an important part in relieving the wartime shortage. Shipments in 1918 .amounted to 15,600 tons of crude ore and 6,400 tons of concentrates. At the outbreak of the present war it was natural to turn again to the Quebec field as a possible source of this strategic mineral. Some of the old properties have since been opened by private and government money and some new deposits have been found. Total mill capacity is 750 tons per day, as compared with 200 to 300 tons in 1918. During 1940, 1941, and 1942, about 85 chromite deposits were examined by the Geological Survey in a belt 100 miles long and up to 7 miles wide. A part of this belt, about 35 miles long, in which the geological features ?were not well known, was mapped on a scale of 1/2; mile to an inch.? Small ..areas around some of the deposits were mapped in detail, on scales of 20 to 200 feet to an inch. Some geophysical work was done but did not result in the discovery of ore. Prospecting by stripping and trenching was then undertaken and chromite ore was uncovered at several localities. The above work was done by the writer and by J. W. Ambrose, who has kindly contributed his results for incorporation in this paper. Y. O. "In 2013, as the prices of precious metals dropped, investors moved their positions to equity markets for higher returns. As a result, the price of gold dropped further to below US$1200 per ounce, prompting additional substantial outflows from gold investments. In response to lagging gold prices, major gold producers initiated large asset write-downs and cost-cutting programmes. In 2015, this trend continues and gold mining stocks are close to lows not seen since the global financial crisis (GFC) of 2008. In the current economic climate many projects have marginal economics, and the number of projects that have competitive development and production costs is declining. A competitive edge is particularly important with the decreasing grades of orebodies, increasing complexity of the mineralogy, and increasingly demanding environmental constraints. In addition, higher cost producers seek to optimize their process t o reduce operating costs.This paper presents some highlights of three case studies on optimization of gold leaching strategies that improved the economics of brownfield projects. Processing of sulphide-bearing ores was optimized by using the synergy between cyanide, lead nitrate, and oxygen. The outcomes were significant reduction of retention times while maintaining or increasing gold extraction and reducing cyanide addition and effluent treatment costs. A stirred tank reactor experimental programme led to direct implementation of reliable leaching strategies from laboratory scale to production. This approach resulted in savings of $2.2 million to $15.2 million on the three brownfield projects discussed in this paper."

The cyanoaurate anions [Au(CN)2]- and [Au(CN)4]- are shown to be useful building blocks for synthesizing supramolecular coordination polymers. For the gold(I) unit, aurophilic interactions often increase the structural dimensionality of the system and can impart increased thermal stability to the metal-polymers produced. A series of polymers of the form M[Au(CN)2]2(Ligand)x have also been prepared and show large colour changes upon changing the ligand, thus illustrating a sensor-type application. Both building blocks can mediate significant antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic interactions between transition-metal centres in the polymers. For the gold(III) unit, no metal-metal interactions are observed, although weak Au-N(cyano) interactions control the intermolecular packing. Several structural examples of cyanoaurate-based coordination polymers are presented, including 2-D and 3-D arrays and a supramolecular square.

THE mines of the Consolidated Copper and Sulphur Company, consisting of the Eust1s, the Albert, and the Capel mines, are situated w Ascot township, Quebec, about ten miles southeast of Sherbrooke, on the main line of the Quebec Central railway. Of these mines, only the Eustis is now producing, and it has been operated almost continuously for the past seventy years. Mining methods have been improved in recent years but are still old fashioned when compared with those employed in more modern and up-to-date mines. The ore is of milling grade and is mined for its copper and sulphur con-tent. Silver is present in small quantity, together with a trace of gold. The ore is mined by the shrinkage stope method. Pillars are frequently left as supports for the hanging-wall to prevent serious dilution of the ore and are sometimes recovered after the ore is drawn from the stope. Occasionally, small blacks of ore in close proximity to the shaft are mined by a cut-and-fill method. HISTORY ALBERT AND CAPEL MINES: The Albert and the Capel mines, originally known as the Capelton mine, were discovered in 1863 by George Capel (1). By the end of 1866 the Albert shaft had been sunk to a depth of 121 feet on an incline of about 30 degrees where a vein five feet thick was encountered. In 1879, these mines passed into the hands of G. H. Nichols and Company, by whom they were operated practically continuously until 1907. When mining operations ceased in that year, the shafts had reached depths on the incline of approximately 2,300 feet and 1,000 feet, respectively. These mines have been allowed to cave and fill with water and have been inaccessible for many years.

"The property of Arntfield Mining Corporation, formerly Arntfield Gold Mines, Limited, covers an area of 2,110 acres and lies in Beauchastel township, western Quebec. The Francoeur mine lies to the west, and to the east are the West Wasa and Wasa Lake properties.The property was staked in September, 1923, by the late F. S. Arntfield. The early surface work was concentrated in the west part of the property along the Francoeur-Arntfield shear zone. The zone was opened by No. 1 shaft, which was sunk for an inclined depth of 250 feet. A series of silicified lenses were discovered farther east, where No. 2 shaft was later raised to the surface. A third shaft explored a shear zone about 1,900 feet to the east, where No. 3 shaft orebodies were developed.The mill was built at No. 3 shaft and production commenced in July, 1935, at 125 tons a day. This was increased to 280 tons by 1938, and later to 350 tons. The mine continued operations on this scale until April, 1942, when the exigencies of war necessitated closing. The Company was reorganized in 1944 and underground development was resumed in June, 1945. The total value of gold and silver produced to April, 1942, was $2,011, 755 from 529,987 tons of ore.ROCK TYPESThe area is underlain by highly deformed and altered Keewatin volcanics overlain by little deformed Cobalt sediments along the south boundary. The lavas in the vicinity of the mine workings are rhyolite, trachyte, andesite, and a flow breccia of intermediate composition. The fragmentals range from fine, well-bedded tuffs to coarse agglomerate in which acidic and basic horizons can be distinguished.The intrusive rocks are diorite and quartz-feldspar porphyry in the form of stock and sills, and narrow dykes of mica lamprophyre and syenite porphyry."

"The paper describes influence of desorbed species (DS) of a number of xanthates and higher dialkyldithiophosphates on the collective ability of these reagents. Adsorbed on mineral DS of the reagents in the form of products of non-stoichiometric interaction between xanthates and heavy metal salts can pass to the gas–liquid interface and remove liquid from the layer between mineral particle and water surface. A high-speed video recording displays the process of spreading of DS of xanthates and dialkyldithiophosphates over water at the moment of local rupture of the water layer. Expansion of “dry” spot on the mineral surface after DS of xanthate capture and displace liquid from the layer has been proved with video images. The comparative analysis of collecting ability and dynamic surface activity of dialkyldithiophosphates shows that these characteristics are in good correlation. The forces exerted by spreading film of the reagent’s DS on liquid in the water layer are evaluated, and the water flow rate from the layer is determined. The line of the reduction in thickness of the water layer behind the front of spreading film of DS of dialkyldithiophosphates and xanthates coincides with the line of the increase in their dynamic surface activity. Their force on the liquid volume in the water layer characterizes collecting ability of the DS film of xanthates and dialkyldithiophosphates. It has been supposed that the collecting ability of DS of a reagent is a part of its overall flotation activity, conditioned by surface tension of solution and, thus, defined by the structure of hydrocarbon fragment of the reagent.INTRODUCTIONIt is believed that collecting ability and selectivity of collecting reagents is mainly governed by adsorption of a reagent at the solid–liquid interface. A few studies have shown that activity of collecting reagents at the gas–liquid interface may have deep influence on their collecting capacity and selectivity. Experimental researches have revealed correlation between surface pressure in a carboxylic acid film on liquid’s free surface and floatability of useful components (Kulkarni & Somasundaran, 1975; 1980; Quast, 2006). According to Quast (2006), it is not always that surface pressure of a reagent film influences collecting ability of carboxylic acid. For instance, pH range of adsorption of tetradecanoic acid on hematite does not coincide with pH range of high surface pressure. So, surface properties of this acid contribute little to flotation efficiency.The correlation between reagent film surface pressure and mineral floatability has been reveled for quartz and cationic reagents, too (Bleier, Goddard, & Kulkarni, 1977). Finch & Smith (1973) showed that combination of adsorption of ion–molecular amine complexes on mineral surface and high surface tension of “fresh bubbles” was favorable for flotation performance. The use of bubbles with reduced surface tension resulted in a decrease in quartz floatability."

"Canadian experience in industrial modeling of grinding, classification, and flotation kinetics was applied at the Sarcheshmeh copper mine, which processes 40,000 t/d of ore at 0.9 % Cu, in an effort to improve capacity and metallurgical performance. Mcivor's functional performance analysis was applied to ball mill cyclone circuits to maximize circuit capacity. Plitt's cyclone model was applied to predict how apex wear would affect classification performance, as part of a predictive maintenance program whereby the optimum wear period is determined for cast iron apexes. The flotation flowsheet was improved using Agar's optimization criteria. The impact of these technologies has been nothing short of spectacular, with an improved capacity of 1 S to 20""/o, and increased recoveries.1-IntroductionThe Sarcheshmeh copper ore body, which may rank as third or fourth largest in the world, contains 1 billion tonnes averaging 0.90 % copper and 0.03 % molybdenum. It is located southeast of Iran and has been processing 40,000 t/d of ore since 1982. The mine produces 100,000 tonnes of copper and 2,200 tonnes of molybdenum concentrate per year. After three stages of crushing, the ore with a Fso of 12. 7 mm is fed to 8 parallel ball mills in closed circuit with cyclones to produce a product 70""/o finer than 7 S microns. The concentrate of the first stage of flotation is reground and the tailings constitute the main component of the plant final tailings. A concentrate with an average grade of 31 % Cu is obtained after cleaning and re-cleaning stages. Total recovery of the plant varies between 83 and 87 % depending on the operating conditions and ore type.To improve the overall performance of the plant, it was first decided to evaluate the performance of grinding, classification and flotation. Measures were then taken to improve performance using the following criteria: (i) The improvements should be of the types that have resulted in significant improvements in other plants (e.g. Shannon et al, 1993); and (ii) The proposed improvements must be achievable with the manual operation presently used at Sarcheshmeh. The outcome of this study could also help in making decisions on the implementation of automatic control systems in the Sarcheshmeh copper mine."

"PAH compounds have been found in the exhaust from all types of engines burning hydrocarbon fuels . They have also been found in the air over cities and in water. The authors report on a study to assess the concentrations of twelve different PAH compounds in several different environments in dieselized underground mines. In addition, the differences in the PAH levels and distributions in different mines will be demonstrated. Finally, the influence of blasting and the type of diesel engine used as well as the effect of catalytic converters in the exhaust system on the PAH concentration in the mine will be discussed.IntroductionMining methods have been altered significantly in the last 25 years; i.e ., the tools and machinery used underground have changed from electrically operated trains and other equipment to diesel-powered equipment. This has been done for several reasons: 1) economics, 2) convenience and 3) safety. Today, most mines are heavily committed to using diesel equipment.Although the introduction of diesel equipment has revolutionized mining methods and has been a tremendous boon to the mining industry, it has also created new problems. These problems arise because the exhaust from diesel engines contains several pollutants which can be hazardous to the health of the miners. These pollutants are CO2, CO, NO., SO2, oxygenated hydrocarbons produced during the buring process and unburned hydrocarbons. There are two classes of hydrocarbons, of which polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs or PNAs) are a part."

"RMR geomechanics classification is being used all over the World as a useful tool for tunnel predesign and construction. Bieniawski (1989) provided guidelines for tunnel excavation and support, according RMR numerical values; guidelines which are now included in almost all tunnelling books, regulations, and Internet portals. But in the last 25 years tunnelling techniques have changed and some of the guidelines have become obsolete.. The conditions of tunnels for the 1989 guidelines application were: horseshoe shape; 10 m width; vertical stress < 25MPa; construction by drilling and blasting. Actually a substantial number of tunnels are mechanically excavated. The tunnel themselves are now bigger: a span of 14 m. is very common for transportation tunnels. The guidelines included the following concepts: excavation method, rock bolts (20 mm diameter, fully grouted), shotcrete, steel sets. There is an increasing gap between the 1989 guidelines and the practice: in many tunnels different to-the-case excavation and support requirements are established. Bieniawski himself has published a paper (Lowson & Bieniawski, 2013) with different guidelines based in Lowson’s practice, with no explanations and/or justification.In this paper a new set of RMR tunnelling guidelines is proposed taking account of the actual industry conditions, and increased safety regulations. The 5 classes’ limit RMR:values (80,60,40,20) are no more useful actually: Values of RMR (70, 50, 30) are used in practice to define quite different tunnelling techniques. Consequently a 10 subclasses system is proposed. Each subclass covers a span of 10 RMR points. As the number of mechanically excavated tunnels has increased a new correction factor is necessary, according the excavation method.The proposed 2014 RMR guidelines are for tunnels 10 to 14 meters wide, the world practice for new roads/railways tunnels. Many tunnels for water/ services are smaller with smaller support needs. Wider than 16 m caverns are out of the RMR system.It is not possible, nor desirable, to propose only a value for support in each subclass. The new guidelines propose an interval of values for certain types of support. More pessimistic values must be chosen for wider tunnels, tunnels with lower RMR values in each class and cases when a higher safety factor is asked for. More optimist ones are chosen for narrower tunnels, and higher RMR values. Some alternatives are almost complementary, others are contradictory. The neutralization of S02 from copper smelter gases to produce calcium sulphate (anhydrite) is considered an attractive alternative to sulphuric acid production. To develop the required technology for the process, a three-stages fluidized bed reactor prototype was designed and operated using both high and low grade limestone and gases with 2, 8 and 12 vol -% S02. The results obtained shows that at 800°C and up to 8 vol-% S02 in the gases, the capture of S02 reaches near 99% with limestone conversion to anhydrite of 45 to 48%. A larger pilot plant is presently being built at the Codelco El Teniente-Caletones Smelter to demostrate the technology and to evaluate the economics of the process. Cu2007
