"The name Barkc:rville district is applied loosely to the gold-bearing area around the historic town of Barkerville; the first mining camp in western Canada. The region is partly in the Cariboo mining division and partly in the Quesnel mining division. It contains two producing lode gold mines; the Cariboo Gold Quartz and the Island Mountain; and numerous other deposits. The regional structural pattern is outlined in this paper; the structural details of the producing mines are described in the papers that follow.The discovery of rich placer deposits in this district in 1860 was followed by the Cariboo gold rush. Placer mining in the area flourished until 1875 and then declined as the shallow diggings were exhausted, but important operations are still active. The total placer production amounts to about $50,000,000. An extraordinary number of quartz veins outcrop in the district, but many have only a small gold content. The miners soon recognized that the placer gold must have been derived from the erosion of these veins, and some directed their attention to the possibility of quartz mining. The erection of a 4stamp mill in 1876 was the first attempt at ore reduction in British Columbia, exclusive of arrastras. Efforts to mine the Cariboo lodes on a large scale were not successful, however, until 1933, when, due to the pertinacity of F. M. Wells and to the increased price of gold, the Cariboo Gold Quartz mine commenced production, followed by the Island Mountain mine in 1934. This success led to development work at many properties in the district, but the only ones that have reached production to date are the Columbia Tungstens, where scheelite has been mined intermittently since 1937, and the Cariboo Hudson, from which gold was produced in 1938 and 1939."

This paper shall show an economic feasible approach to implement Greenhouse Gas (GHG) reduction measures into the mining and metallurgy industry. The goal to improve energy consumption is directly linked to the reduction of GHG emissions and therefore directly in correlation with the economic viability. A baseline scenario of the considered reference system and of the respective reference year has to be defined, mapped and analysed. In a second step an analysis of the same operation using available and prospected Best Available Technology (BAT) processes is carried out to generate a basis for a benchmark system. The identified reduction potentials are reported and the GHG emission reductions are put into relation to the investment cost of the new process technologies / process adaption to be implemented. This economic feasibility calculation is necessary to realise a cost efficient GHG reduction roadmap implementation into the company's business operations. The GHG reduction roadmap is developed using ratios between GHG reduction and investment / operating cost to get an indication for a sequence for implementing carbon emission reductions measures.

Higher prices for natural gas or oil have motivated the copper industry to reexamine the modes of oxygen and oxy-fuel burner usage at operating plants. With rising energy costs and the growing importance of environmental protection, burner usage and burner operations have become the focus of several investigations and optimization efforts. One possible approach to lower energy usage is through combustion using tonnage oxygen. When such oxygen is used, the flame temperature increases and operational efficiency is improved. As well, with the correct technology, due to the presence of lower levels of harmful substances such as NOx in the off gas, there is improved environmental performance. As regards copper production, furnaces are employed for both concentrate smelting or for melting and casting operations. The use of tonnage oxygen in concentrate burners for smelting provides for a higher thermal efficiency. For furnaces employed for melting, air-operated burners may in fact have an initial advantage because a long radiant flame is typically generated, thus providing for a higher degree of heat transmission. This paper describes the new experimental burner chamber of Messer Austria GmbH which provides for testing of the combustion of natural gas with oxygen or oxygen-enriched air and the use of special water cooling ducts that simulates a metal charge during melting, The operational effectiveness of the burner is determined from temperature and off-gas analysis data. The Similkameen Division of Newmont Mines Limited operates a low-grade open-pit copper mine in southern British Columbia. The copper mineralization is extremely erratic.As a result, over seven years of operation, ore control methods have evolved from standard flagging based on blast-hole assays, through an in-pit grab sampling system, to the present method of mining to computer-determined ore-waste boundaries based on geostatistics. These improved ore control methods have resulted in a gain of at least 25% on ore tonnage miffed, at the same grade as obtained using earlier techniques. At the same time, geostatistical ore reserve estimates are now within 7% of milled ore tonnage and grade on a yearly basis, whereas the original polygon ore reserves under-estimated mineable ore tonnage by 15% to 45% and over-estimated grade by about 20%. The author discusses why traditional ore estimation methods give poor results in erratically mineralized orebodies and describes the geostatistical approach to the problem.

"In certain instances, rocks around underground excavations behave as a plastic mass. This paper offers several solutions to predicting the mode of plastic flow around cavities and designing mining pillars where plastic conditions exist.IntroductionWhen stresses around underground cavities exceed yield limits of the host rock, the material often behaves as a plastic mass. The best example of this phenomenon is the behaviour of salt rocks in deep salt and potash deposits (more than 500 m deep).However, many other soft rocks exhibit similar properties. For example, Jeremic(1) described certain types of coal yielding plastically under high pressure. Alder suggested that granulated rock behaves plastically.The object of this paper is to propose a de sign procedure for mining pillars exhibiting plastic flow due to the combination of rock properties and in-situ stresses.Prandtl(3) mathematically defined a concept of a generalized, perfectly plastic substance, not possessing the property of strain hardening (Fig. I). Since the early 1980s, surface hard-rock mining companies have searched for a blast movement model to enable grade control optimization efforts. Significant time and money were spent attempting to create blast simulations to aid post-blast grade control. Despite nearly 40 years of effort, practical blast movement models remained elusive until computing power reached levels that make real-time simulation possible. From the mid-1990s, mines have been creating in-situ grade control polygons and translating the polygon nodes horizontally to account for blast movement. In many cases, objects are placed in the blast volume and located post-blast to provide local vectors for these node translations. This method was always a compromise between practicality (2D) and reality (3D), but it was the only viable solution that matched the needs of operations. This study considers 21 blasts and evaluates the incremental value achieved by new processes unlocked through 3D modelling, while investigating challenges, limitations, and opportunities for each method.

Metallurgical plants are typically large, complex facilities. Their design is a multidisciplinary activity with a wide range of inputs, based on: the business case; metallurgical and process requirements; and the main processing equipment selection. Many constraints limit what can be achieved. Appropriate phasing of the design and development, and clear go/no-go decision criteria, are critical to successful implementation of a plant design project. Risk management concepts are used as a framework for successful project development, working from the business case, through project development, to implementation and startup, paying constant attention to technology, safe design, and sustainability. 1.1 INTRODUCTION The subject of “Metallurgical Plant Design” is the design of metallurgical plant facilities in the broadest sense. Plant design represents the culmination of many multidisciplinary activities: knowledge of process metallurgy is applied to design facilities to manufacture useful, economical, metal-based products. In the field of metallurgy, plant design is often overlooked, and its unique requirements are commonly not well understood, let alone appreciated. This book is a contribution to remedying this situation. The focus is the specifics of the metals industries, because an extensive literature already exists on the general topic of plant design.

This paper deals with materials of construction and problems encountered and overcome in leaching and filtration of oxidized sulphuric acid slurry in the Port Radium mill after eight years of operation. The slurry is characterized by a high calcium sulphate content as well as a high chloride level under oxidized conditions, both of which affected initial design and subsequent changes. Leach agitation tanks are of wood with a mild steel superstructure and stainless steel agitator and moving parts below solution level. Electro-polished 316 stainless steel cooling coils are used for temperature control of the slurry. The string filters are of the Oliver type with wood decking. Extensive use is made of wood, Linatex lined mild steel and stainless steel for the slurry handling. In this investigation, the aging effect on creep behavior of A12024-10%SiC composite fabricated by powder metallurgy was studied. P/M bars were manufactured by hot powder extrusion method at 450°C with a ratio of 16 to 1. Creep specimens were over-aged at 187 ºC for 43 h. It was found that almost full density composite with relatively homogenous distribution of reinforcing particles throughout the aluminum alloy matrix could be attained by direct powder extrusion process. Creep tests were conducted at temperatures from 275 to 325°C under stresses from 25 to 60 MPa. The analysis of the creep mechanism determined that dislocation glide was the predominant mechanism of plastic deformation. The activation energy of the creep process was found to be higher than that of lattice self-diffusion in pure aluminum.

"Modern history is full of breakthroughs in technology, all striving to increase productivity and efficiency. What are the elements that should be taken into consideration in the design and implementation of modern automation systems in a control room? Both industry and international standards are now demanding that Human Factors be considered as part of the design of control rooms to maximize efficiency and minimize the potential of human error which can lead to downtime and a loss of profit as a result of interruptions in production. As the current workforce ages and the younger generation matures, this is also becoming a key element when planning a control room. New standards are helping to address some of these challenges that are facing the mining industry today. With an increased focus on the operator, an intelligent and ergonomic workspace can both mitigate risk and optimize production. Optimization is money. We will examine how to analyze and implement innovative control room planning to maximize mineral processing production and minimize risks that can impact overall production and profit.INTRODUCTIONIn this day and age, optimization of production in an industrial environment is becoming more and more of a challenge. With ever changing technology as well as other external factors, this can be especially daunting. There are several key elements that may not be immediately obvious when planning a control room design or renovation, most notably the role of the human in this environment. Fatigue, stress, distraction, reaction times and situational awareness are all critical in a 24/7 environment. With the growing need to include human factors when considering and designing an optimal work and production environment, it is becoming even more important to design a control room that can address as many of today’s challenges as possible.The standard definition of the word “optimization” is “an act, process or methodology of making something (as a design, system, or decision) as fully perfect, functional or effective as possible.” (www.merriam-webster.com). If we apply this to business, what it really means is finding the most cost effective way to achieve the highest level of performance while considering constraints, both external and internal, by maximizing the desired factors and minimizing undesired ones. Sometimes, however, we can get caught up in the day to day processes, without taking a moment to step back and objectively review what it is we need to achieve, and more importantly, the steps that can facilitate our success."

"This paper illustrates the different ways grade-tonnage curves can be generated f or a mineral deposit. It emphasizes systematic discrepancies between reality, estimates and actual production according to different estimation methods and grade control programs. It does not offer a universal solution to the prediction of grade-tonnage curves. Hopefully, it will inspire caution to mineral economists who use estimated grade and tonnage data in the establishment of an optimum cut-off grade for a mining operation.IntroductionThe value of a mineral development venture often depends on a grade-tonnage curve. Statistics can help. The idea is to divide mentally the orebody into small blocks called selective mining units or SMUs. A SMU is an idealized version of the quantity of rock the grade of which will be tested against the cut-off at the time of mining. It could be as small as a truck load or a shovel load in very selective operations like some uranium mines where radiometric probing of each truck or car is performed. More typically, in an open pit operation, it will be the smallest zone flagged as ore from blast hole data, e.g. a 5 m by 5 m by 10m block, if blast holes are on a 5 m grid and bench height is 10m. Having defined the SMUs, the grade-tonnage curve determination amounts to evaluating the grade distribution of all the SMUs that can be mined in the depo sit. If we know this distribution we simply apply the cut-off to it and we get the number of SMUs above the cut-off (i.e. ore tonnage) and their average grade. .Assessment of the grade distribution of SMUs from exploration drill hole data is not an easy exercise and much has been published on the subject (David, 1972; Marechal , 1972; Huijbregts, 1975; Marechal, 1975; Guibal and Touffait, 1982). In this paper, we use a gold mine example to illustrate the influence of SMU size on the results. With the same example we also show that ""common-sense"" methods of grade-tonnage curve determination can sometimes be misleading."

High Pressure Grinding Rolls (HPGR) are said to be a good option in new grinding circuits. Due to their low energy consumption compared to other grinding systems such as SAG milling, there is a strong incentive to check their behaviour for certain ore types. With rising energy prices the operation will become even more beneficial in future. As published in the past, the HPGR is claimed to increase the liberation of the valuable mineral component within an ore. An investigation at the research centre of Polysius was conducted to substantiate the liberation behaviour in finish grinding operations. A pilot scale HPGR test unit (POLYCOM MAGRO) with a roll diameter of 950 mm and processing capacity of 80 t/h was used. Grinding tests were completed with a screen and a two stage drying air separation process (SEPOL). Analysis included standard screen analysis, fractional XRF and modern MLA technology. A technique was developed to oppose the amount of produced slimes (resuming bad flotation) against the positive effect of producing high mass fraction at flotation-easy sizes. The paper shows how effective the use of a dry grinding separation could be in terms of production of mass of liberated metal.

During the geological synthesis of the Réservoir Pipmuacan area (NTS 22E) by the Ministère des Ressources naturelles (Québec), several ilmenite-apatite occurrences, some well-known and some recently discovered, have been examined. These occurrences are hosted in the Lac-Saint-Jean and Labrieville AMCG anorthositic suites. The Lac-Saint-Jean Anorthositic Suite (1160-1140 Ma), composed of multiple intrusions covering an extensive surface area, is characterized by labradorite plagioclase. The Labrieville Anorthositic Suite (1010-1008 Ma) is characterized by andesine plagioclase. It was previously known as the Labrieville Anorthosite, which was composed of a small isolated pluton located east of the Lac-Saint-Jean Anorthositic Suite. However, new geochronological data and field observations indicate that the Labrieville Anorthositic Suite in fact includes several intrusive bodies, namely the La Hache Monzonite and the Mattawa Anorthosite. A series of major structures (Saint-Fulgence, Pipmuacan, and Chute-des-Passes deformation zones) and their conjugate faults played an important role in the emplacement of the Lac-Saint-Jean Anorthositic Suite. The Saint-Fulgence deformation zone appears to have been involved in the emplacement of the Labrieville Anorthositic Suite. Oxide mineralizations are abundant in both anorthositic suites. Ilmenite, magnetite (± titaniferous), and apatite assemblages are found mostly in the labradorite-type anorthosites, while hemo-ilmenite, magnetite and apatite assemblages are associated only with the andesine-type anorthosites. Field works has revealed ilmenite-apatite mineralizations in a variety of settings, with grades reaching 48% TiO2, 16.2% P2O5, and 71.7% Fe2O3 (tot). Numerous oxide-bearing gabbronorites, often accompanied by or located near massive apatite-oxide accumulations (nelsonites), were discovered. Among these oxide-rich zones, breccia zones with anorthosite enclaves in an oxide matrix (ilmenite-magnetiteapatite) have been observed. Locally, ilmenite-apatite mineralization occurs as cumulate concentrations in ultramafic rocks. Evidence has been observed for immiscible magmas, for magmas differentiated from a mangerite or jotunite parent, and even for late magmas differentiated from the anorthosite magma itself (apatite-bearing anorthosite). Finally, the northern part of the Lac-Saint-Jean Anorthositic Suite hosts sulfide and vanadium mineralizations associated with ilmenite-apatite enriched zones, with grades reaching 1.48% Cu, 1.22% Ni, 1.6% Cr2O5, 0.25% Co, and 0.52% V2O5.
