"Many modern concentrators with VSD driven SAG mills still rely on the control room operator to manually adjust the speed in reaction to increasing bearing pressure. All too often, the problem with this strategy is by the time the operator reacts with a sudden speed increase, the SAG Mill is likely already on its way to loading up. To assist the new operators, the SAG Mill at B2Gold’s Fekola Mine in Mali needed a robust control that could handle load changes and unmeasured disturbances with minimal operator intervention. With modern Distributed Control Systems (DCS) powerful enough to run advanced control, they often have Model Predictive Control (MPC) blocks built in or available as an “add-on” license, and thus MPC can be readily implemented within the modern concentrator with a relatively low added capital cost. This paper discusses an implementation of two single output MPC controllers to control the SAG Mill at Fekola. This was implemented using the existing signals and advanced control blocks available to the installed DCS.INTRODUCTION Many modern concentrators with VSD driven SAG mills still rely on the control room operator to manually adjust the speed in reaction to increasing bearing pressure. All too often, the problem with this strategy is that by the time the operator reacts with a sudden speed increase, the SAG Mill is likely already on its way to loading up. The next step the operator may take may be to cut back the feed rate, or production until the SAG is once again stable. With this sudden reaction comes an abrupt change in SAG rotational speed and power consumption that sends a surge of material down the circuit as the mill suddenly ejects more pulp. Furthermore, choosing a higher rotational speed can lead to higher than normal liner wear as the cataract overshoots the toe of the charge and impacts the liners. After start-up at B2Gold’s Fekola Gold Mine in 2017, the SAG mill was being controlled manually. The SAG rotational speed was adjusted manually by the operator in step changes depending on whether the SAG bearing pressure was increasing, decreasing or stable. During this time of manual control, the SAG fresh feed rate was also adjusted to a tonnage setpoint with a PID controller. Generally, the SAG fresh feed rate setpoint was kept at a target value, but then the feed rate was throttled back if the SAG mill or grinding circuit showed signs of overloading. The extra challenges were that the operators had limited experience and were concurrently learning how the plant operated. Also, they were also occupied with managing situations in the rest of the plant. Often their attention was drawn away from the SAG mill and during that time, the SAG Mill would load up before they could react."

The St. John Del Rey Mining Company, Limited, is an English company owning 150 square miles -of mining lands near Belo Horizonte, Minas Geraes, Brazil. The area is 2,300 to 5,000 feet above sea level, with a pleasant and healthy climate. Bedrock is Precambrian. The Nova Lima series of metamorphosed sediments and some volcanics is overlain uncomfortably by the Minas series of quartzites, itabirites. etc. Batholithic granite and gneiss cut both series and basic dykes cut all these rocks. There are important deposits of gold, iron, and manganese on the Company's holdings, as well as occurrences of arsenic, antimony, cobalt, nickel, dolomite, day, quartz, -ochre, bauxite, kyanite, and asbestos. Except for gold and consequent recovery of arsenic, all the other materials are relatively unexploited. The Company operates the Morro Velho gold mine and the Espirito Santo and Raposos gold mine. The Morro Velho mine was purchased in 1834 for £56,000. To the end of 1952 it had produced 7,000,000 troy ounces of gold from 15,000,000 short tons of ore. The ore z?ones are replacement deposits in a sinuous siliceous dolomitic rock locally termed "lapa seca," and plunge east, near surface at 45 °, at 8,000 feet at 15°. The ore minerals are pyrrhotite, arsenopyrite, pyrite, and chalcopyrite. Gold is finely distributed and almost nowhere visible. Ore reserves at the end of 1952 were estimated at 5.5 million short tons grading 0.39 oz. gold per ton. Chances exist for new ore within the mine area. The Espirito Santo and Reposos mine, in folded banded iron formation, has mineralization similar to Morro Velho but sulphides are less abundant. The mine to a depth of 2,500 feet has estimated ore reserves of 1.5 million tons of an average grade of 0.28 oz. gold per ton. New ore may be expected both laterally and at depth. To the end -of 1952, the ?Company had paid dividends of almost £4,- 600,000, largely earned from the operation of the gold mines.

Such exploration programs must be under the supervision of the Qualified Person who will be responsible and accountable for the planning, execution and interpretation of all exploration activity as well as the implementation of quality assurance programs and reporting. These guidelines are also recommended for use in the planning and execution of exploration programs which will not be reported under NI 43-101. This set of broad guidelines or ""best practices"" has been drawn up to ensure a consistently high quality of work that will maintain public confidence and assist securities regulators. The guidelines are not intended to inhibit the original thinking or application of new approaches, that are fundamental to successful mineral exploration.Results should be summarized and reported in a Technical Report of good professional quality in accordance with the National Instrument 43-101 and Form 1 contained in that instrument. All exploration work from which public reporting will ensue must be designed and carried out under the supervision of a Qualified Person (""QP""). A QP is defined in National Instrument 43-101 as an individual who is an engineer or geoscientist with at least five (5) years' experience in mineral exploration, mine development, mine operation or project assessment, has experience relevant to the subject matter of the project or report and is a member in good standing of a recognized professional association."

"This paper addresses the occurrence and indicated causes of conveyor fires in North American and European underground mines. Some significant convey or fires which have been experienced in recent years in Canadian hardrock mines are then reviewed. The nature of existing conveyor monitoring technology is considered in the context of such fire hazards. Experiences with new monitoring technology recently installed at several conveyor sites at Inca Ltd. mines are then reviewed.IntroductionFires associated with conveyors have long been recognized as a serious hazard in underground coal mines. Recently, however, there have been some significant conveyor fires in Canadian underground hardrock mines. These offer important evidence as to the nature and causes of potential hardrock mine fifes. They also warrant attention with a view to improving over-all mine design, ventilation and emergency preparedness.In addition, a new era in mine communications and monitoring technology has been entered which should offer improved capability to protect against such fires. This paper was motivated by the need to understand the causes and mechanisms of conveyor fires in order to improve their safety. This should be possible through implementing more effective monitoring systems, as well as improving conveyor design. Underground mines are becoming more intensively mechanized, with less human surveillance of equipment and a greater dependency on remote monitoring systems."

Acknowledgements The following account has been compiled mainly from records and maps of Eldorado Mining and Refining (1944), Limited, hereinafter called the Crown Company. Outline of General Geology The geology of the area is described in the Goldfields and Martin Lake preliminary maps of the Geological Survey and accompanying Paper 49-17. In brief, the Tazin series of Precambrian age, consisting mainly of sediments with minor interbedded volcanics and basic intrusives, is intruded and replaced by granite, now generally gneissic. The late-Precambrian Athabaska series of conglomerate and arkose, with interbedded basalt and andesite flows, rests unconformably on the older rocks. All these rocks are cut by small diabase dykes. The geological terms used in this paper and in the accompanying figures are standard with the exception of the term 'mafic rocks'. These include all the basic or dark coloured rocks of the Tazin group, such as amphibolites, biotite schists, and chlorite-epidote rocks (greenstones), whether they be of extrusive, intrusive, or sedimentary origin.

WHEN Dr. Horace Fraser, your President, invited me to speak to you today I advised him in confidence that I was leaving my present positions on April 30th. In the circumstances it seemed to me that this audience might prefer to have as its speaker one who wo.uld J1ave a continuing association with the atomic energy programme. Dr. Fraser was kind enough to suggest that my re-marks might he of special interest to you, since I would be able to sum up my views on the atomic energy programme. I hope that I will not disappoint him or you on that score. I am particularly pleased that my last public appearance in my present positions should be at the Annual Convention of the C.I.M. since, as all of you know, a very important part of my work has been in the mining field. As it happens, my first public address on the subject of atomic energy and its raw material -uranium -was made at your Annual Convention in Montreal in April, 1949. It seems fitting that my final address should also be made at this convention -nine years later.

Research on alternative lixiviants for gold is ongoing; however few people have looked at complete flowsheets. Alternative lixiviants are typically applied at concentrations 50 to 100 times those required for cyanidation. The higher concentrations make lixiviant recycle a vital part of the process. In addition it is no longer feasible to rely on lixiviant destruction to produce lixiviant free clean water for recycle to the comminution circuit. Ausenco has worked with Barrick to integrate reverse osmosis into the thiosulfate RIL processing flowsheet that forms the basis of the plant upgrade currently being constructed at Barrick’s Goldstrike autoclave facility.

The Huelva smelter was commissioned in 1970 coinciding with the shutdown of the old smelter in the Rio Tinto mine site. That new smelter consisted of two Momoda blast furnaces with a capacity of 500 dmtpd of concentrate. Nevertheless, soon after their start-up, it was clear that an increase in the smelting capacity was needed. After an analysis of the existing alternatives at that time, the flash smelting technology was chosen. The new Outokumpu Flash Smelting Furnace (FSF) came into operation on 18 September1975, with an initial capacity of 900 dmtpd of concentrate, using four Venturi-type burners and preheated atmospheric air. Since that date the Huelva Smelter team, together with Outokumpu (now called Outotec), have continuously improved our FSF design, process conditions and operational practices, leading to a present capacity of 3,500 dmtpd of concentrate. Since 1975, five smelting campaigns have been completed, the last ending in November 2013 with the rebuilding of the original FSF hearth. This paper describes the history of these improvements and the lessons learned.

Corrosion protection properties of the hybrid organo-silicate coatings on aluminum substrate can be significantly improved by means of encapsulation of organic corrosion inhibitors within the coating material. In order to achieve sustained release of corrosion inhibitor and long-term corrosion protection, a secondary chemical equilibrium of either ion-exchange interaction with the coating matrix or cyclodextrin-assisted molecular encapsulation of the inhibitor has been employed. Several organic corrosion inhibitors, such as mercaptobenzothiazole, mercaptobenzimidazole, mercaptobenzimi¬dazolesulfonate, and thiosalicylic acid have been examined by a group of electrochemical methods including potentiodynamic scan, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, and scanning vibrating electrode technique. It has been found that the formulations that contain ß-cyclodextrin demonstrate superior corrosion protection capabilities as the complexation equilibrium results in a continuing delivery of inhibitor to corrosion sites. The approach is considered a promising way for active corrosion protection of high-strength aluminum alloys when integrity of barrier coating is compromised.

"Des quartzites trés pars ont été découverts au cours de la cartographie de la region du lac des Martres, étape de l'étude géologique de la region de Charlevoix.On distingue quatre groupes métasédimentaires, tons con tenant des niveaux de quartzite dans an mains deux domaines géologique différents, c'est à l'ouest, clans le do¬maine gneisso-charnockitique que se situent les quartzites du groupe des Martres. Quartzite et gneiss à, grenat et sillimanite, en banes épais, constituent la formation de La Galette. A Pest, dans un environnement gneisso-granitique, les deux groupes métasédimentaires de Saint-Siméon, et de La Malbaie comprennent, par contraste, des bancs pen épais et de compositions variées. Les niveaux de quartzite dépassent rarement 50 m d'épaisseur. L'autre groupe métasédimentaires, celui de Saint-Tite des Caps, recoupé de nombreuses intrusions charnockitiques et granitiques, ne possède que de minces niveaux de quartzite.La pureté et la grande épaisseur des quartzites de La Galette suppose une histoire complexe qui se termine par des depots continentaux de climat aride, par opposition aux depots marins des autres groupes. D'autre part, la presence de ces quartzites an sein de roches Presque anhy¬dres et de haute temperature que sont les charnockites leur confére des caractéristiques de fusion sans decrepitation.Parmi la multitude de depots de quartzite qui existe clans le monde, peu sont de qualité supérieure. Or, de par sa composition chimique, le quartzite de La Galette se compare avantageusement à ceux des meilleurs gisements des Etats-Unis, de l'Europe de l'Ouest et de l'Afrique du Sud. D'accès facile pour l'exploitation, les gisements ne sont qu'à une trentaine de milles de Baie Saint-Paul ou de La Malbaie, sur le Saint-Laurent.L'utilisation en metallurgic prévue pour le quartzite de La Galette comprend la production de silicium, de ferro¬silicium et d'autres alliages de silicium. La composition du quartzite est en outre appropriée pour la production de carbure de silicium et de silicate de sodium. Due to recent regulations limiting tolerated lead concentrations in copper alloys, new recycling strategies have to be considered. This study investigates the suitability of technical approaches in order to recycle leaded copper alloys exemplified by CuZn39Pb2 and produce an alloy in compliance with future lead regulations in the European Union. Three pyrometallurgical methods are considered to achieve this goal, namely vacuum distillation, intermetallic precipitation and fractional crystallisation. The impact of essential process parameters i.e. pressure, temperature, time, atmosphere and quantity of additives are identified using thermochemical and kinetic modelling. An experimental implementation reveals a general suitability of all three refining processes. However, the individual efficiency of the different methods strongly differs. Thus, a detailed assessment is carried out in order to provide an evaluation on the efficiencies of these methods from a technological, economical and environmental point of view. Taking a possible industrial realisation into account, the authors recommend the approach of vacuum distillation, although the energy demanded is comparatively high due to the enthalpy of evaporation for zinc, or rather, lead. However, required lead concentrations can be reached quickly without introducing an external element to the material. The prediction of selectivity and evaporation speed, which are immanent variables for a successful implementation, can be validated experimentally. INTRODUCTION In 2016 approximately 1 million tonnes of leaded copper alloy semi-finished goods with an average lead content of 2.1 Ma% have been produced in the European Union (EU). The global production in the same period exceeded 5.5 million tonnes, while the lead concentration has stayed constant at around 2.4 Ma% for the last 50 years. Up to 80 % of the current production volume is covered with end-of-life scraps, which are used for direct re-melting, depending on the alloy composition. Lead has been a popular alloying element in copper alloys in general, and in particular in brass due to its positive impact on various mechanical, physical and chemical properties, especially machinability. Health and environmental concerns were drivers for many governments to implement limitations on lead. In order to further utilise the resource potential of leaded copper scrap, it is inevitable to develop methods to efficiently eliminate lead from circulation as far as possible. The origin and limitations of the conventional and empirical equation for the interpretation of the results of back pressure tests on gas wells are discussed. Difficulties in data interpretation arise from many causes, including Jack of flow stabilization, uncertainties in connection with the friction calculation, and the effect of turbulence near the sand face in the reservoir. A procedure is developed to ac-count for the turbulence effect. This is based upon the theoretical equation for laminar steady state flow and current knowledge of turbulent steady state flow. The procedure involves the expression of the equation for combined laminar-turbulent steady state flow in terms of a turbulence contribution factor. This factor. is shown to be dependent mainly upon the flow rate per unit of pay thickness and the reservoir permeability. The method of interpretation permits the use of judgment based upon the theory and present day under-standing of laminar-turbulent flow and is considered an improved method

"On the north shore of the St. Lawrence River, in Quebec, are located orebodies of low-grade titaniferous magnetite. The Quebec Mining Exploration Company (SOQUEM), who have an interest in the deposits, believed that beneficiation of the could generate sufficient revenue to defray the mining costs and the costs of transporting the ore to a steel production facility. A joint research project of SOQUEM and CANMET investigated alkaline roasting of a magnetic concentrate, followed by leaching of the calcine and separation and recovery of Cr and V by solvent extraction. Aluminum was recovered by precipitation.The present paper describes the roast-leach bench-scale and pilot-plant work leading to the development of the optimum conditions f or the integrated process.A plant flowsheet was developed for the treatment of 5 x 106 tons of magnetic concentrate per annum. Estimates of capital and operating costs were made.Based on a recovery of approximately 90% V, 85% Cr and 75% AI, the total hydrometallurgical plant fixed capital costs, including mining, concentration and shipping, are estimated at $1.021 x 109; the operating costs are estimated at $131.92/ton concentrate. Annual revenue from the Na2CrO4.H2O, V2O5 and A12O3 produced is calculated to be $421 x 106.IntroductionThe Quebec Mining Exploration Company (SOQUEM) acquired in 1968 an interest in four titaniferous magnetite orebodies located in Eastern Quebec. 85 miles north of Mingan on the north shore of the St. Lawrence River. The Mingan deposit, with an estimated tonnage of one billion tons, has a reported average grade of 43% Fe, 6.3% Ti , 1.60% Cr, 0.19% V and 6.1% Al with minor amounts of nickel. SOQUEM, on the basis of previous bench-scale data, believed that the recovery of chromium, vanadium and alumina by alkaline roasting would generate sufficient revenue to defray the mining costs and the costs of transporting the ore to a steel production facility on the coast. One of the approaches selected by SOQUEM for beneficiation of the ore consisted of a combination of magnetic concentration followed by alkaline roasting of the calcine."

A brief description is given of the process used by Sherritt Gordon Mines Limited to recover cobalt metal from nickel-cobalt sulphides. A description of the equipment with the operating conditions is presented with an evaluation of the corrosion test results for various stainless steels and other acid resistant materials for the part of the process involving the sulphuric acid leaching of nickel-cobalt sulphide slurry under air pressure. SINCE 1954 the Sherritt Gordon ammonia leach process has been used at Fort Saskatchewan to recover nickel metal, copper sulphides and cobalt-nickel sulphides from nickel concentrate produced at Lynn Lake, Manitoba. 'To develop a process for recovering cobalt and nickel from the cobalt-nickel sulphides, studies were carried out in the Sherritt Gordon laboratory and pilot plant and, late in 1957, continuous acid leaching of sulphides was started in the refinery. The management of solid waste is known to be a large and increasing problem in high-population areas throughout the world. It is not necessary here to add further definition to the nature and magnitude of the problem. Instead, it is the purpose of this paper to describe a new process, called the Andco-Torrax System, which will be of use in converting municipal solid waste into useful energy forms and a granulated slag by-product. The paper includes a description of the first commercial plant for the process.

"Maximizing the value of each tonne of processed ore is the goal for all operations. Cyanidation processing of gold-copper ores has been challenging since its first use in 1889. The current practice treats a bleed or the total flow of mill solution to recover copper as copper sulfide (by sulfidization, acidification, recycling, and thickening), or to recover the cyanide (by acidification-volatilization neutralization). The process presented uses the adsorption of copper cyanide by carbon and the selective elution of copper from carbon to concentrate copper into a smaller stream. Copper contained in the smaller stream is precipitated as copper cyanide.RÉSUMÉ Toutes les exploitations ont pour objectif commun d’optimiser la valeur de chaque tonne de minerai traité. Depuis sa première utilisation en 1889, la méthode de traitement par cyanuration des minerais aurifère et cuprifère s’est révélée complexe. La pratique actuelle traite la saignée ou le débit total d’une solution de traitement du concentrateur pour récupérer le cuivre sous la forme de sulfure de cuivre (par sulfuration, acidification, recyclage et épaississement), ou pour récupérer le cyanure (par acidification, volatilisation et neutralisation). Le cuivre contenu dans ce plus petit jet est précipité sous forme de cyanure de cuivre.INTRODUCTIONProcessing gold-copper ores by cyanidation has been a cost-control challenge since the cyanidation process was first used in 1889. Copper cyanide is stable only in the cuprous state, not the cupric. This factor results in the oxidation of a mole of cyanide per mole of nonchalcocite copper extracted. Each mole of copper extracted forms a cyanide complex with a minimum of 3 mol of cyanide. This cyanide-to-copper mole ratio is required to dissolve gold. The oxidation of cyanide and copper complexation with cyanide results in high cyanide consumption for copper-gold ores, which is a significant operating cost.One challenge in processing gold-copper ore is the cost of cyanide related to the extraction of copper. Processing 10,000 t/d of ore containing 1,000 mg/kg copper and 10% copper extraction yields 1,000 kg/d of copper. Currently, processes to remove copper from cyanide leach solution treat either the total flow of the barren or a bleed of the barren. The two processes used for copper-gold ores are sulfidization, acidification, recycling, and thickening (SART), which produces a copper sulfide product for sale; and acidification- volatilization-neutralization (AVR), which recovers the cyanide from a gas and produces a low–cyanide content solution. This low–cyanide content solution can be recycled to the process or might require additional treatment before being disposed from the operation."

T HE production of coal in Canada was slightly higher in 1964 than in the immediate past, and the major users continue to be the electric utility and metallurgical industries. There are continuing trends toward the increased use of cokes and chars in various metallurgical applications. Geological Research During 1964, the coal drilling program of the Research Council of Alberta (RCA) was concentrated in the extreme south of the Province (notably in the Milk River area and the region immediately to the northeast of this area). Field work commenced on June 1 and was completed at the end of September, by which time a total of 376 holes, aggregating some 48,500 ft., were drilled in 132 townships. Although no new major coal occurrences were intersected, the pro-gram yielded useful data for defining the extent of the known coal deposits in the area. "Cretaceous sands and clays underlie an area of approximately 5,000 km2 in Northern Ontario, southwest of James Bay. The deltaic deposits occur as a wedge of continental sediments to the north of an east-trending fault scarp referred to as the Precambrian Escarpment. They rest on older sedimentary formations of the Moose River Basin (Jurassic, Devonian) and are covered by glacial tills and marine sediments of the Quaternary period. Outcrops are restricted to occasional exposure in the deeply incised riverbeds.In 1975 and 1978, drill programs sponsored by the Ontario Government provided new information on the extent and quality of the deposits. Fourteen holes at approximately 12-km intervals were drilled to a maximum depth of 189 m by reversed- circulation chip drill methods. Some core was obtained as well. Analytical results show that the thickness of Cretaceous deposits exceeds 100m in several instances. Abundant kaolinitic clay and quartz sand of glass-grade quality, both unique materials in Ontario, are available in an area where hydroelectricity and lignite resources combine to enhance the energy outlook.IntroductionThe presence of refractory clay in deeply incised riverbeds in Northern Ontario was known to geologists travelling the rivers as early as 1875. Robert Bell (1877) reports outcrops of clay and lignite on Coal Brook, a tributary of the Missinaibi River. E.B. Borron in 1880 collected a sample of clay from the bed of the Missinaibi River which H.H. Croft of the University of Toronto considered to be ""nearly if not quite, equal to the Cornish clay used in the manufacture of English porcelain"" (Keele, 1920, p. 42). The Cretaceous age of the clay, sand and lignite deposits was determined with the help of plant remains collected by Keele. He referred to the deposits as the Mattagami series, which later became the Mattagami Formation."

"The Powell mine is in western Quebec about 2 miles northwest of the adjoining towns of Noranda and Rouyn. It is the original discovery of the area, its gold-bearing quartz vein having been discovered in 1922. Considerable work was done on this vein by several companies and discontinued because the grade, when gold was $20 an ounce, was too low for profitable extraction. Between 1922 and 1924 an inclined shaft was sunk to 225 feet and drifts were driven 240 feet on the 100-foot level.In 1929, due to the discovery and development of the Horne mine at Noranda, interest was revived in the property. Sulphide deposits of the disseminated and vein types were explored on the Powell claims. On the B copper 'showing', a vertical shaft, now known as the 'old copper shaft', was sunk to ·a depth of 167 feet and 300 feet of lateral work was carried out on the 150-foot level. As no orebody was discovered this work was discontinued.In 1933 the present company, Powell Rouyn Gold Mines, Limited, was formed and the gold-bearing quartz veins were again tested by drilling and trenching. In 1936, the price of gold having risen to $35 an ounce, operations were resumed. Since then the inclined shaft (No. 1) has been deepened to 500 feet, a second shaft (No. 2, vertical) on the main quartz vein has been sunk to 2,630 feet, and ll; shallow vertical shaft (No. 3) on the same vein but in the south claim has been sunk to 500 feet.Lateral work now approximates 9 miles, and to November 15th, 1946, 1,685,674 tons of ore, which averaged 0.129 oz. gold per ton and 73.6 per cent. Si02, had been extracted."
