"Coniaurum Mines, Limited, hold nineteen claims in Tisdale township, in the Porcupine district, adjoining the McIntyre mine on the east. They extend for over a mile along the strike of the Hollinger-McIntyre 'break'. The property has been explored extensively along the ore zone both laterally and vertically. Workings have been carried to a depth of 5,500 feet, and nearly 50 miles of lateral workings (drifting and cross-cutting) have been driven to date in development and in gaining access to the orebodies.Production started at the Coniaurum in June 1928 and has continued without interruption. Base and precious metal refineries often produce effluent solution and slurry streams containing between 50 mg/L and several grams per liter of base metals. Metals have historically been precipitated from these streams with lime to produce effluent streams at pH values between 8 and 9. This effluent treatment process generally does not remove alkali and alkali-earth metals or halides efficiently and with more stringent environmental legislation, more sophisticated effluent treatment plants must be considered which could for example incorporate sulphate removal with ultra-filtration, or the SavminTM process, followed by reverse osmosis for the removal of halides. The flowrates of effluents are often high and if base metals can be recovered before neutralization, the revenue generated from this stream can reduce the cost to produce clean water significantly, and in the case where high concentrations are disposed of, result in a profitable operation. As an add-on to an existing the plant the recovered metal is upgraded and recycled to the plant, but the production of a saleable metal can also be considered. Technology selection for metal recovery depends on the composition and flowrate of the effluent, but could incorporate resin-in¬pulp or other ion-exchange technology; precipitation as sulphides, hydroxides or carbonates; or solvent extraction. Copper electrowinning/electrorefining (EW/ER) is powered by direct current (DC) rectifiers that typically generate 30,000 to 70,000 amps and a bus-bus voltage of 200 to 500 volts DC. Tankhouses are designed so that DC current flows through “cell lines” which contain individual EW/ER cells electrically connected in series. Electrolyte composed of copper sulfate and sulfuric acid in water forms the “liquid conductor” that connects the metallic conductors in this circuit. In this setting, stray current is a DC current that strays from and therefore bypasses the tankhouse circuit by finding a path to ground, often through the electrolyte in pipelines that feed into and discharge from the cells, or through dried electrolyte (i.e. sulfate), which is also electrically conductive. Tankhouse workers can be exposed to shock hazards if they become part of a stray current path to ground. This presentation details examples of stray current shock hazards in electrolytic tankhouses and provides voltage and amperage measurements associated with stray current in these examples. A review of critical safety controls in EW/ER tankhouses that will mitigate the risk of employee shock from stray current is also provided. INTRODUCTION Electrolytic tankhouses are designed to deliver relatively large amperages of DC current to a series of electrolytic cells in which copper is plated out of solution using the classic anode-cathode pair geometry within each cell. Electrolyte is the “liquid conductor” that transfers current in between the metallic conductors of the cell. The metallic conductors include inter-cell copper bus bars and the anodes and cathodes themselves. It is sometimes forgotten that electrolyte as a conductor is capable of delivering DC current outside the designed circuit of a tankhouse. Stray current is a DC current that strays from the tankhouse electrical circuit by finding a path to follow other than the designed path. Safety becomes a concern when there is a risk of an employee becoming part of an accidental stray current path, thereby suffering an electrical shock. In 2016, Freeport-McMoRan (FMI) suffered a fatality at one of its copper electrowinning tankhouses. The forensic analysis concluded that stray current from the tankhouse rectifier contributed to the fatality. An employee accidentally fell into contact with a metal flange at the end of an HDPE pipe that was collecting cell overflow electrolyte from the tankhouse. DC current passed through the employee to ground, creating a shock that was judged to contribute to his death. The situation was exasperated because the employee was unconscious, and therefore was exposed to the stray current for several minutes before being found. In addition, the employee’s clothing was saturated with liquid, and the employee was found kneeling in puddled liquid on the ground. FMI immediately began an investigation into the root cause of the stray current that was measured at the scene. Sufficient electrolyte had accumulated in the HDPE pipe such that a continuous path was formed between it and electrolyte that was continuously overflowing from energized electrowinning cells. The metal flange on the pipe was the metallic conductor that carried the current to the employee from the electrolyte inside the pipe. Current then flowed through the employee to ground. Because of this incident, FMI undertook an extensive review of the hazards of stray current in EW/ER. FMI’s tankhouse workforce received a Tankhouse Electrical Safety training course developed in- house to insure worker understanding of stray current hazards. Tankhouse design changes were implemented to better insulate workers from stray current. Personal protective equipment (PPE) standards were also reviewed and changes made.

ABSTRACT: Falcon concentrators are enhanced gravity separators designed for concentrating fine particles. The Falcon UF model is unique in that it is dedicated to beneficiation of ultrafines, one key feature being that it does not make use of any fluidization water. We investigated the physics of particle transport inside Falcon concentrators, and concluded that separation efficiency is governed by differential settling velocity. We derived and published a predictive model of the partition function under dilute conditions. We intend to extend the initial model to concentrated ultrafine suspensions for application to industrial scenarios by adding hindered settling to account for solid concentration effects.

INTRODUCTION MINERAL deposits of Salmo map-area (Figure 1) have aroused the interest of prospectors for more than a half-century. Properties within the map-area have produced lead, zinc, silver, tungsten, and gold. Sheep Creek mining camp ranks fifth in the Province in the total production of gold, but during recent years interest has been concentrated upon base metals, and meticulous prospecting and exploration have resulted in the discovery of many large zinc-lead orebodies. PREVIOUS WORK Geological investigations of the region were begun long ago, and it is interesting to trace the development of ideas with our increasing knowledge of the geology of this complex area. The first geological examination of the rocks of Salmo map-area was made in 1859-60 by H. Bauerman (1), who was employed as geologist accompanying the first international Boundary Survey. Bauerman examined the rocks exposed along Pend d'Oreille river and published a section indicating that the sedimentary rocks are probably of Palaeozoic age, and are intruded by granite of unknown age. McConnell and Brock(2), in 1894 - 1900, carried out the reconnaissance mapping of the West Kootenay Sheet, on which they outlined the Mesozoic rocks of the Rossland Beaver Mountain volcanic groups that they believed rested unconformably upon the sedimentary rocks to the southeast, which they regarded as of Palaeozoic age.

"A set of Al-Co binary alloys (with respectively in weight percent 10%, 20%, 30%, 40%, 50% and 60% Co) have been studied by X-ray diffraction at the as compacted state. The structural evolution according to cobalt addition shows special features as the apparition of fcc cobalt and hcp cobalt beside aluminium in some cobalt compositions of the Al-Co mixtures using only cold compaction without sintering at high temperature. Figure 1 Cobalt is not a common alloying element in aluminium because its solubility is very low [1]. According to the pressure-temperature phase diagram, Co is known to exist in two allotropic forms: a low-temperature hcp phase and a high-temperature fcc phase [2-3]. At room temperature, Co is stable in the hcp form but it transforms to the fcc form when it is heated to above the transition temperature 695K. Powder aluminium and cobalt (99.999 %) were used in the proportions defined according to the required compositions. The total mass of the samples to be elaborated was between 8 g and 10 g. Cold compaction of mixed powder (Al-Co) under an uniaxial load of 10 MPa has been achieved to obtain a dense product (60%)."

"IntroductionWITH THE DISCOVERY of natural radioactivity at the end of the 19th century, and the design of equipment for the detection of this phenomenon, radioactivity surveys bad their inception. Early in the 20th century it was found that almost all rocks are radioactive to a certain degree. This radioactivity is due to the nuclear disintegration of six naturally radioactive elements: potassium, thorium, uranium, rubidium, samarium, and lutecium.The radioactivity of these elements manifests itself by the emission of some concentration of alpha, beta, and gamma 'rays'. Of these, the alpha and beta 'rays' are, respectively, helium atoms and electrons, while the gamma 'rays' are short wave length x-rays generated in the nuclear disintegration by the transformation of mass into energy.The alpha and beta rays, being particles of matter, are stopped ve• easily by material barriers, but gamma rays are extremely penetrating and they will pass through a foot or more of rock or several inches of lead.The radioactivity may be detected by the causing of ionization by the radiation. The radiation detectors may be divided into four classes: ionization chambers, proportion al counters, and Geiger counters, all of which use gas for ionization, and scintillation counters, in which a solid is ionized. The basic principle of all these detectors is the same; the difference lies in the method used to measure the degree of ionization produced by the rays. Currently, the scintillation counter is displacing, the other instruments in radioactivity surveying."

Emission of perfluorocarbon gases, CF4 and C2F6, produced during anode effects from aluminum electrolytic cells are a significant part of the total equivalent CO2 emitted by aluminum plants. With the current concerns about global warming, the reduction of these PFC gases is a key issue in reducing greenhouse gases for a smelter and achieving GHG emission agreement goals. This paper will present the approach taken by the Alcoa vertical-stud Soderberg plant in Baie-Comeau to reduce GHG emissions generated during anode effects and close emission gaps with other Alcoa Soderberg plants. The approach has been to adapt the existing technology in place at the Baie-Comeau Soderberg plant. PFC emissions were lowered by reducing both the anode effect duration and frequency through different methods. Examples of change include: implementing skimming practices and wider side crust break area for better alumina dissolution in bath, increasing the ratio between reacted and pure alumina, reducing the time to declare anode effects in the potrooms, implementing best work practices and finally educating the workforce on the importance of reducing PFC emissions.

"The development and commercial operation of the Falconbridge chlorine leach process have been described in papers in 1985 and 1987. Since this time, various process improvements have been implemented and the capacity of the Kristiansand refinery has been increased to 85 000 t/y Ni, 40 0000 t/y Cu and 4500 t/y Co. The focus has been on continuous improvements in productivity, the use of energy and other costs. Several environmental issues have also been eliminated or reduced since 1987. IntroductionThe first nickel refining operation in Kristiansand, Norway, started in 1910 based upon raw materials from Norwegian mines. In 1929, Falconbridge Nickel mines purchased the refinery to acquire information and the patent rights to the Hybinette refining process that was practised at the small Kristiansand refinery. Falconbridge ownership has now, for more than 70 years, provided a strong base regarding raw material supply, financial resources and technical support for further expansions and major technical improvements at the refinery.The main concepts of the new chlorine leach process were developed in the laboratories from 1966 to 1969 and the process was piloted from 1970 to 1972. The main stages in the commercial plant were started in the 1975 to 1981 period. After 1981, there have been a number of process modifications, plant expansions and improvements to operating practices. The developments up to 1988 have been described in previous publications (Stensholt et al., 1986, 1988).This paper presents an overview of the process and how it is practised at Falconbridge Nikkelverk AS (FNA) today and describes some of the main changes that have been implemented since 1988. During this time, the nickel capacity has been expanded from 54 000 t/y to 85 000 t/y and the cobalt capacity from 2000 t/y to 4500 t/y. The paper describes how these expansions were achieved together with continuous improvements in operating efficiency and also gives an overview of the main environmental concerns at the refinery."

THE discussion on Dr. Chipman's paper, Mapping by the Topographical Survey, centred mainly on the urgent need for aerial photographic reconnaissance of unmapped portions of the country as an initial phase in the provision of suitable topographical maps for use as a guide in geological mapping, prospecting, exploration, and development work in the areas concerned. This, ir was pointed out, would necessitate an expansion of the topographical work of the Bureau of Topography to keep pace with the photographid work and to meet the demand for maps for use by geologists of the Bureau of Geology and others. A resolution requesting Institute Council to make representations to the proper authorities, urging that aerial photography and topographic map-ping be greatly expanded to meet the pressing needs of the situation, was moved by DR. W. F. JAMES and seconded by MR. L. G. SMITH, and carried unanimously. The full text of the resolution appeared on page 221 of the May BULLETIN. Others who spoke in support of the resolution were MESSRS. E. S. MOORE, L. B. ROCHESTER, F. D. SHEPHERD, and W. J. WRIGHT. Dr. Hansen then presented his paper, Mapping by the Geological Survey, discussion on which is summarized below. MR. FRANK EBBUTT(l) spoke of the very valuable service the Geological Survey bas rendered the mineral industry, and indeed the whole nation, in its century of existence, despite the very inadequate financial support it has received. Now, more than ever before, a strong and expanded Geological Survey is essential if the Industry is to continue to prosper. Our known ore reserves are being depleted very rapidly, and we are finding no new orebodies to take their place. As an aid in prospecting and exploration, and also in the development of orebodies when they have been found, we must have geological maps of the vast sections of the country which at present are unmapped or inadequately mapped. The Institute should make every endeavour to have the Geological Survey strengthened so that such maps may be made available as soon as possible.

"Abstract -The Magino gold mine is located 45 km northeast of Wawa, Ontario. There was limit­ ed gold production in the Iate thirties. The present operation was officially opened in October 1988 and produced gold until September 1992. It was a 635 tonnes per day, decline-accessed mine, with ore coming from several small blast hole and shrinkage stopes.The host for the gold is the Webb Lake granodiorite stock which was intruded into the Goudreau Lake Deformation Zone. This east-northeast-striking deformation zone overprints the generally east­ west-striking isoclinally folded metavolcanic and metasedimentary rocks, which make up the east end of the Michipicoten greenstone belt. The ore-shoots are controlled by dextral delatancy associated with the Goudreau Lake Deformation Zone. Shearing, bleaching and silicification accompanied the gold emplacement."

The metalliferous areas of Manitoba have been described in more or less detail. Since the descriptions were written some new prospects have come to light and considerable mining development has taken place in two or three localities. No attempt will be made in this paper to give an account of recent activities or to describe the several areas in detail. In a general way, geological conditions are similar in all metalliferous areas of the province, a similarity that invites a discussion of the prospects as a whole, the features that are common to all deposits and the reasons for their uniformity. Modern theories of metallogenesis have a direct bearing on such a discussion and an effort will be made to show their application.

Difficulties and costs of transport markedly affect Canadian mineral producers because of distance from markets, weather conditions and rugged terrain. The chemical and physical nature of sulphide concentrates presents additional difficulties in handling and transport, resulting in higher costs which are ultimately borne by the mineowner. Troublesome properties include the thixo-tropic character of wet concentrates, freezing, susceptibility to autogenous heating, and fine particle size causing spillage and dusting losses. Canadian mineowners and shippers must contend with these problems and with stringent regulations governing the maritime shipping of concentrates. A "systems approach," in which complementary techniques in materials preparation, handling and transport are integrated, could reduce freight costs and losses for those selling concentrates, facilitate operations for those carrying and handling them and, in some cases, improve metallurgical processes in smelters receiving them.

Stainless steels such as 316L or 304 are normally relatively resistant to attack by nitric acid. However research at Sherritt International’s Fort Saskatchewan Operation reveals that when the stainless steel is immersed in an aqueous system in which nitric acid is used to dissolve metals such as cobalt or nickel, the steel can be seriously corroded. Sherritt is patenting a simple process for arresting the corrosion via the use of copper. This process is expected to substantially eliminate corrosion in processes where nitric acid is used to dissolve metals attached to a stainless steel substrate.

Risk-based Inspection (RBI) addresses the challenges associated with ageing plants by focusing the inspection effort on the process equipments with the highest risk, thereby improving plant safety and reducing inspection costs. The RBI methodology is commonly used in the oil industry through the API 581 standard. Since no such standard exists in the mining and metals industry, BPR-Bechtel has developed one using inspection data from process equipments in CEZinc. Models were developed for various damage mechanisms, such as uniform corrosion and stress corrosion cracking. The equations were organized into a user friendly software that facilitates the implementation process.

"This paper presents the technique and benefits of the finite element approach for designing the refractory lining in pressure oxidation autoclaves. One-dimensional equations are used to develop an initial refractory design. ANSYS Parametric Design Language (APDL) scripts are then used to build and analyse a more accurate three-dimensional finite element model to verify the refractory thickness, determine weld overlay requirements, and assess mechanical stability. The APDL scripts provide a cost effective means to quickly evaluate various boundary conditions and multiple designs to determine the optimal lining configuration and nozzle layout.INTRODUCTIONNew ore processing facilities demand increased capacity, requiring hydrometallurgy processes that have larger reactor vessels operating at higher pressure and temperature. Many pressure hydrometallurgy operations require vessels with an impermeable membrane and one or more courses of refractory or ceramic brick. The membrane provides corrosion protection for the vessel shell and the brick provides thermal protection for the membrane. Designing a refractory lining with an economic service life as a thermal barrier requires the refractory to be erosion resistant, chemically compatible with the process fluid, and mechanically stable. A fundamental understanding of the factors affecting the lining system is essential as designs move further away from the industry’s experience base.During basic engineering the refractory lining design is developed using one dimensional cylindrical conduction equations for heat transfer and classical hoop stress-strain relationships for determining mechanical stability. The results of the thermal calculations specify the refractory thickness that should prevent the membrane temperature from exceeding the design limit. Mechanical stability of the lining is determined by examining the sensitivity of lining stability with respect to various parameters. DURING a recent trip across Canada and parts of the northern United States, the. writer examined some forty mine models. Construction -details and the uses to which the models were being put were outlined in a report to Eldorado Mining and Refining, Limited, and a specific model was proposed on the basis of the Company's particular needs at their Beaverlodge operation. It was felt, however, that portions of the report would be of some value to anyone contemplating building a mine model. For this reason, a synopsis of some of the more important aspects of the problem is presented here, together with a suggested model type that appears to have wide application. Thanks are due not only to Eldorado for permission to publish the following material, but also to the many mine personnel across Canada who allowed the writer to examine their models and gave freely of their time in discussion.

This paper describes the geophysical Jogging of coal that is being carried out for the National Coal Board in the United Kingdom. An explanation of the technique is given and results are presented showing estimations of seam thickness to within ±0.5 in. and ash content to accuracies of ±2.5 per cent. The basic method of interpretation is outlined and some conclusions regarding the conditions of roof and floor material which may be deduced from the logs are explained. An indication of future developments in this field, including the identification of coal type and moisture content, is given.

The implementation of Energy Management within the global mining industry has advanced significantly during the past 20 years. Consequently, the industry?s knowledge of energy efficiency improvement opportunities, more energy efficient technologies, renewable energy technologies, energy procurement practices, and most importantly, practical approaches for integrating the energy management best practices into business processes and operational procedures has improved greatly. Based on 25 years of experience leading the management of energy in mining operations and the Canadian mining community, the author discusses the key building blocks in the evolution toward becoming an energy efficient mining facility. Sustainable energy management depends on the internalization of the behaviors related to the effective energy use by a mining organization. The paper outlines the typical business drivers that stimulate top management commitment to allocate the resources necessary for this to happen. It also explores the barriers that mining companies must overcome to maintain the commitment. Additionally, it will advocate the need for the application of the principles of organizational change management as part of the energy management implementation process. The question regarding how energy management can be made to happen in a way that is practical for an established organization is answered by providing the details of the framework for energy management, the methodology for controlling energy use, and the roadmap for integrating energy as a key business parameter and production process input variable. An Energy Management System standard developed within the Mining Association of Canada?s ( MAC ) Towards Sustainable Mining ( TSM ) initiative has played an important role in increasing the capacity of the Canadian mining industry to manage energy. The impact of the application the MAC TSM Energy/GHG Management Protocol by Canadian mining companies will be discussed. In June of 2011, the international ISO 50001 Energy Management Systems standard was finalized and published for use. The structure of ISO 50001 will be outlined along with its applicability to the mining industry. Opportunities for practically improving mining energy performance along with the most appropriate current new technologies will be identified. A brief discussion of case studies will be included that demonstrates the successful implementation of Energy Conservation Measures ( EAC?s ) and economic benefits. In conclusion, thoughts on important areas of research and development related to increasing mining energy efficiency will be provided.

In order to evaluate the impact of air quality control on mine design, a few examples are given of cases in wh.ich ventilation has affected the economics of the total design problem. Principles for the drainage of gas contaminants are shown, and the contamination control problems created by differential pressures in complicated booster fan installations are discussed. The paper also deals with the use of advanced mathematics for solving some of the ventilation problems likely to be encountered.
