The paper will outline historically the different materials used for pouring sockets and illustrate the current trend due to inherent advantages. A section will be devoted to engineering stress analysis showing the criteria necessary for the wires not to slip inside the poured socket material. The Ontario Mining Regulations pertaining to poured sockets will be reviewed with emphasis on the acceptable type of sockets depending on usage. In addition the paper will review the proper socket preparation techniques and explain the destructive testing conducted at the Materials Testing Lab essential for the certification requirements. In conclusion the paper will show the importance of the Certification Program for the safety of Miners working in Ontario, Canada and the World. The paper is also intended to inform the Mine Operators and Consultants that to-date the .Wirelock. sockets have been used safely for hoist ropes of locked coil and non-rotating construction and for the termination of balance ropes, and that further research is required on the construction of a socket approved for rotating type mine hoist ropes.

"A solid flows out of a bin provided that the outlet is sufficiently large so that stable obstructions to flow do not develop. The geometry and surface finish of a bin and the construction of the feeder determine the type of flow pattern which then develops within the bin. The pattern, in turn, affects the uniformity and consistency of the stream, segregation, caking, degradation, live capacity and the action of level measuring devices.In most bins now in operation, material flows toward the feeder through a channel which forms within the stationary solid. This is referred to as funnel flow. If the hopper of the bin is sufficiently steep and smooth and the feeder capable of drawing material across the whole area of the outlet, all the solid flows whenever the feeder is in operation; this is referred to as mass flow. Mass-flow bins are usually far superior to funnel-flow bins; their initial cost is also usually higher.The paper describes the design criteria used in deter-mining the minimum bin outlet needed for flow and the bin geometry needed for mass flow."

"The majority of Ontario's limestone and dolostone production comes from a few Paleozoic carbonate units. In eastern and central Ontario, Ordovician rock units, which are the main sources for production, include the Oxford, Gull River, Bobcaygeon, Verulam, and Lindsay Formations. They are predominantly utilized for aggregate and cement manufacturing, with the Bobcaygeon Formation being used as a source of building stone. Along the Niagara Escarpment, the Silurian Lockport, Amabel, and Guelph Formations are sources for the limestone industry. The largest tonnage of rock extracted by the industry comes from these Silurian units, especially the Lockport and Amabel Formations. These units are used primarily for aggregate, although they are also a source for lime. In southwestern Ontario, the Silurian Bertie Formation and Devonian strata, represented by the Bois Blanc Formation, Onondaga Formation, Detroit River Group, and Dundee Formation, contribute to Ontario's production of lime, cement production and crushed stone. The Detroit River Group (Lucas and Amherstburg Formations) is the main source of the lime and cement produced in the province.Northern areas, which may become significant sources for the industry, include Manitoulin Island, the Lake Timiskaming area, and the James Bay Lowland. IntroductionThe Engineering and Terrain Geology Section of the Ontario Geological Survey has undertaken a geological inventory of all active and abandoned limestone and dolostone quarries in Ontario. This report will follow the format and style of D.F. Hewitt's Ontario Department of Mines Industrial Mineral Reports and Circulars (Hewitt, 1960, I964a, 1964b, 1964c; Hewitt and Vos, 1972). Examinations of the quarries were carried out by geologists in the Paleozoic I Mesozoic Geology Subsection of the Engineering and Terrain Geology Section, and include, in addition to the authors, R,R. Wolf, V.A . Mazur, and D.K. Armstrong in the summer of 1986."

"The construction of large. high-power electric furnaces has been an important factor in the growth of electric smelting technology . New developments in the design and operation of electric furnaces have been spurred by the escalating cost of electric power and increasingly stringent environmental constraints. Key areasofprogress include the application of high voltage to enhance furnace productivity; the installation of novel furnace cooling elements and robust binding systems to extend furnace life; development of process schemes to reduce power consumption by preheating and prereduction of the charge; and environmental control improvements for handling fine dusty feedstocks, and for furnace sealing.This paper reviews these developments and outlines a systematic approach for their application in the custom design of new or retrofit electric furnace facilities.IntroductionThe use of electric smelting furnaces has continued to progress during the last decade. Electric furnaces offer high throughput capacity and productivity. In addition, they produce minimum environmental impact, as the furnaces can be readily sealed, and only a small quantity of off-gas is generated. Electric furnaces present the most favourable choice of smelting technology where high process temperatures in excess of about l400°C are required.Their application is burdened by the escalating cost of electric power, hence it is important to seek new opportunities through further technological development. A study was made to determine the effect of increasing concentrations of dissolved oxygen on the floatability of galena pyrite and chalcopyrite. Adsorption, flotation and contact-angle tests were done in deoxygenated, in air-saturated and in oxygen-saturated solutions. The results showed that the adsorption of collector increased as the concentration of oxygen increased. Adsorption followed the exponential law r = kC'/"• Discontinuities in the curves were observed after the adsorption of several monolayers of collector. Although adsorption increased with increasing oxygen concentration, the floatability of the pyrite minerals did not increase, because oxidation had adverse effects on the floatability of these minerals. The floatability of galena was maximum in oxygen-saturated solutions, pyrite was depressed and chalcopyrite was also slightly depressed. Contact-angle tests proved that a bubble could not be attached to large flat surfaces in deoxygenated solutions, because sufficient surface free energy was not available for adhesion after the deformation of the bubble. In the presene of air, all the minerals yielded the same maximum angle of 72 degrees, characteristic of isopropyl xanthate.

Outotec is continuously developing our existing process equipment and new equipment solutions to enhance the Flash Smelting process. Thanks to the long operating history of the Outotec Flash Smelting process feedback from the numerous operating references are available and is utilized. The general goals for development work are to improve equipment performance, thus realizing savings in Smelter plant operation costs by increasing the process efficiency and online availability. Digitalization also opens new possibilities for the feeding equipment and furnace operation monitoring. These solutions will improve the safety and performance of the smelter, and provide process and equipment related information which has not been available earlier. INTRODUCTION The year 2019 marks the 70th anniversary of Flash Smelting. The technology was operated on industrial scale for the first time at the Outokumpu Harjavalta copper smelter in Finland in 1949. The Flash Smelting technology, is now owned and developed by Outotec Oyj and the first plant, is now owned by Boliden Harjavalta Oy. The two companies have been evolving throughout history by optimizing the process for various feeds and raw-materials, as well as through developing the equipment and operating practices. Even though sustainability was not a hot theme/topic during the first days of Flash Smelting, it has nevertheless been the key principle in guiding the development. This is well proven by the wide adoption of Flash Smelting for the processing of copper and nickel concentrates, mostly due to its ability to fulfil the economic and resource efficiency criteria demanded by its operators. Along with the process technology development, also development of the equipment has taken place over time. Outotec is continuously working on developing our equipment to better suit the changing need of our customers in the continuously changing operational environment. Orebodies are getting more challenging with lower ore grades and more impurities. Achieving high recoveries for all valuable elements becomes more difficult with high slag quantities and with the need to tackle the high impurity concentrations. There is a need for higher capacities in greenfield and brownfield smelters. The role of the Loss-in-Weight Feeder, the Air Slide and Concentrate Burner is to ensure even feed into the reaction shaft of the Flash Smelting Furnace, and to enable controlling the process well, thereby enabling the best performance for the customers smelter. The design of the Flash Smelting Furnace aims for high availability, long campaign and safe operation.

"This paper is a brief overview of the role of oxygen in cyanide leaching of gold feeds (e.g. ore, concentrate). As the majority of gold occurs in the elemental state (Au °), its oxidation is of vital importance for dissolution in the cyanide lixiviant. The cyanidetion at high pH is favourable for the oxidation of Au° with a mild oxidant such as air or oxygen. Beside oxidation of gold, deleterious effects of soluble sulphides, arsenates, antimonates on cyanidation of gold can be alleviated by preaerating the leach slurry with air or oxygen (i.e. preaeration process).If gold is refractory due to its occlusion in sulphides, silicates, tellurides, etc. then gold liberation is possible by roasting in the presence of oxygen or by leaching under oxygen pressure. The data in the recent literature indicate that reactive oxygen supplied by H202, Na202, Ca02 or 03 during cyanidation can accelerate considerably gold oxidation-cyanidation and yield high gold recovery in much shorter leach time. The information compiled in this review leads to the conclusion that oxygen plays a vital role in the dissolution of gold in cyanide lixiviant."

"The feasibility study determines the technical and economic viability of a project at the level of accuracy required by the owner to make an investment decision. The economic analysis usually includes calculation of the discounted cash flow. Key components of the cash flow include the project capital cost, the operating costs, construction schedule, production rate, product prices and financial details.This paper examines the feasibility study for a typical mining project. The paper discusses acceptable methods for the determination of the geological and mineable are reserves. The prerequisites for the development of suitable designs, and the calculation of capital and operating costs for the mine, processing plant, and infrastructure are reviewed. Important features of the cash flow analysis and its interpretation are presented.IntroductionThe commercial development of a mineral deposit invariably requires the investment of capital in preparing the deposit for production. It has always been necessary, therefore, to demonstrate to the investor of capital that production of a saleable commodity is both technically feasible and economically viable. The instrument typically used to make these determinations is the feasibility study .Traditionally, mining companies have been rather conservative in their approach to financial management. Until about thirty years ago, the capital required to develop a new mine was most frequently provided by internal corporate cash now and virtually all of the necessary technical and economic studies were performed 'in house'. Under these circumstances, there was little standardization as to what constituted an acceptable feasibility study, and even less as to what constituted an acceptable measure of economic viability."

At present, most ore milling is done in tumbling mills, consisting of huge cylinders turning on their horizontal axis. This rotational motion causes the ore charge and the grinding balls to interact by impact, compression and abrasion, to reduce the size of the ore. This method is very inefficient since only around 12% of the energy supplied is used for actual grinding, the rest being used in moving the large mass of balls and ore within the mill. This work aimed at better understanding the milling process by evaluating the movement of the load through the Discrete Elements Method (DEM). First, the number of bodies (balls and ore) moving inside the mill is determined, to correlate to the potential impacts that constitute one of the milling mechanisms. Then, the number of high energy impacts is evaluated to correlate to the bodies in motion. At this stage, a differentiation between grinding media and the ore, as well as between the types of contact taking place in the mill, has to be made. This latter issue is of great relevance since from the five identified contact types (ball-ball, ball-liner, ore-ore, ball-ore and ore-liner) only the last three actually contribute to the milling process, the other two causing structural damage to the mill.

"This paper describes the use of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) as a tool for mineral exploration by using the Eskay Creek area of northern British Columbia as an example. Data entry, analysis and output are discussed. Examples of some of the capabilities of the technology are presented.The main benefit of the technology is being able to perform complex and sophisticated searches of large and diverse data sets to highlight exploration targets. A GIS is a powerful data management tool that can be used in mineral exploration. It is a computer based system that is designed for the collection, storage and analysis of objects and phenomena where geographic location is an important characteristic. The main function of the GIS is to produce information for the geologist from a variety of sources (geology, geophysics, geochemistry, mineral deposits and so forth) quickly and efficiently. This allows the geologist to examine large amounts of data in a fraction of the time than can be done using conventional manual methods."

"This paper begins by describing the parameters of high-speed underground tracked drifting operations and the mucking cycle, and-discusses their variations. The railbound Haggloader 8HR is then described, as well as the Hagglund shuttle trains, outlining the advantages and disadvantages of the system. A comparison with conventional mucking operations is then given.IntroductionDrift and tunnel rounds are mucked by one of two major methods, either trackless with diesel loaders and trucks or with track loaders and cars. The aim of this paper is to compare the conventional tracked mucking cycle with the Hagglunds system alternatives.For many years, the traditional method of attacking the mucking cycle has been with a rocker shovel loader, a string of cars and a locomotive. The rocker shovel loads the first car and when full it is taken to a side drift, cherry picker or some other transfer point and is exchanged for an empty one. This empty car is then pushed back into the face and the loading continues until all cars are full . Then the whole train is taken out to a dump point where the cars are emptied. Normally the train's capacity is less than the volume of the muckpile, so the cars go back to the face. This loading cycle is repeated until all muck is removed from the heading. The last train out from the heading usually takes the loader and parks it in a side drift before continuing on to the dump where the cars are emptied.This simplified version of the traditional loading cycle excludes the ancillary work elements such as track laying and so on, but does point out that the cars must be transferred when full and that the whole train normally makes at least two round trips from the dump to the face. The prime aim in drifting is to cycle a round whithin a working shift which necessitates that no one part absorbs so much time as to prevent the completion of the cycle.Mucking, drilling and loading and the ancillary work such as rock bolting, vent and service pipe hanging typically each take one-third of the available work time. Drilling or mucking can and often do, because of various factors, take nearly half of the total cycle time. Once any segment of the operation starts to take this portion of the shift, the likelihood of missed rounds becomes increasingly greater."

"Mining research at CANMET is delivered by the Mining Research Laboratories Division (MRL), with facilities in Sydney, Nova Scotia; Bells Comers, Elliot Lake, and Sudbury, Ontario; and Val d'Or, Quebec. This paper gives an overview of the work of the Division as of early 1993. An addendum, at the end of this paper, describes the organizational changes that will take place in April 1994. IntroductionCANMET, the acronym for the Canada Centre for Mineral and Energy Technology, is the name by which the organization founded in 1907 as the federal Mines Branch is presently known. The name was changed in 1974, in order to give recognition to the importance of both minerals and energy technologies in the activities of the Branch. Further reorganizations have taken place since 1987. As a result of these, CANMET has assumed the status of a Sector (equivalent to the Geological Survey of Canada) and has been organized into four branches.The organization as a whole functions in an environment of semi-matrix management. Some of the ""line"" Divisions report to Directors-General for the appropriate branches while other, larger divisions, report directly to the Assistant Deputy Minister.The second dimension of the organizational matrix is composed of a number of ""staff' divisions which report to the DirectorGeneral for Policy and Planning. Each of these Divisions performs a function which is common to all of the ""line"" divisions. For example, the Research Projects Office is responsible for monitoring the range of research activities of CANMET and for recommending allocations of funds for both research contracts and operating budgets. The Library and Documentation Services Division is responsible for CANMET publications and information services. Likewise, the Engineering and Technical Services Division provides support through, among other services, the construction of specialized laboratory equipment."

The magnetometer which was developed during the war for detecting submarines has proven exceedingly valuable in outlining deep-seated structures in oil exploration, and will be useful also to geologists in outlining regional structural features in the Precambrian. Our magnetometer has been developed to outline local and detail structures. 1 am quite sure that all geophysicists and geologists would agree with me that, in ore prospecting, it is important to obtain as much detailed information as possible. We know that, as we ascend from the ground and get away from the magnetic ore-bearing structures and orebodies, the magnetic intensity decreases rapidly, but, worse than that, we lose the details even faster. Figure l shows two strong, very sharp, magnetic 'highs' over two orebodies which, as our distance increases, rapidly merge into one fairly broad, moderately strong anomaly. If we drilled on this maximum, we would not encounter any of the orebodies. Therefore, we should fly the airborne magnetometer as close to the ground as possible in order to duplicate the results of the magnetic ground surveys. The first chance to accomplish this came with the helicopter, which is an exceedingly maneuverable aircraft. It can be landed in a cleared space not much more than fifty feet square. With floats, it can be landed anywhere, even in a swamp, on thin ice, or on soft snow. It can stand still in the air, hovering over a given point. It can ascend and descend vertically, fly sideways and even backwards, at the will of the pilot. It flies forward at any speed up to l00 miles an hour. The helicopter can be taken to any desired position at a given time. It can fly at any useful altitude from a few feet to several thousand feet above the ground. It can fly very close to the ground with safety. In bare areas, the survey flight may be performed a few feet above the ground. In forested areas, however, the flights, to clear the trees, must be made at l00 to 150 feet. To mark out a certain point, a small parachute-like marker may be draped over a tree or laid on the ground. This can be done from the helicopter without touching the ground.

"The Early YearsThe Grand Lake coal fields in New Brunswick undoubtedly can claim the distinction of being the first part of North America from which coal was mined and exported. The diaries of the Governor of Massachusetts during the first half of the 17th century clearly establish this fact. There is also a reference in the Massachusetts Colonial Records which indicate that coal exports to New England were carried on as early as 1639.It has generally been believed that Cape Breton mined and exported the first coal; but no account has yet been found to show that this took place earlier than 1676. Both at Grand Lake and Cape Breton the coal was near the surface and removed by hand.When the country passed entirely into British control, Joseph Garrison, a grantee of Maugerville in 1765 moved to Jemseg. While surveying the north side of Grand Lake he discovered outcroppings of coal on the shore of the lake and further inland along the banks of streams. It was he who named Newcastle Creek in reference to Newcastle in England, which was widely known for its coal mines. Joseph Garrison died in 1783, the same year that an influx of United Empire Loyalists increased settlement in Newcastle Creek in the area now known as Minto. Many Loyalists also settled on the shores on both sides of Grand Lake.At a number of points where streams cut channels through the overlying strata, the coal seams were exposed and it was at such outcroppings that the early operations were carried on. A tunnel was driven in the seam from the foot of the bank, affording both an outlet for the coal and natural drainage from the workings. The coal was loaded into boxes and wheeled over wooden tracks to a point on the surface where it could be dumped into wagons and hauled either direct to destination or to where it could be loaded into boats and conveyed via Grand Lake, Jemseg and Saint John river to points of distribution.In the latter part of the 18th century and first years of the 19th century, farmers were undisturbed by mining the coal found on their lands. This was soon to change and resulted in many years of contention between landowners and the Legislative Assembly.New Brunswick became a separate province from Nova Scotia in 1784 and the seat of government moved from Saint John to Fredericton in 1788. The new province had its first priorities; the establishment of counties, the building of roads, and the development of its natural resources. From 1805, records of coal and land development are fairly complete. These records show the increasing interest of the Province in developing the coal fields. This interest resulted in the granting of coal leases to many friends of the government, without any regard for the wishes of the farmers who owned and had occupied the land for many years. The farmers fought back with lawsuits and other forms of dissension but with little success. By the end of the 19th century there were very few farm operators left in the area."

THE blasting practices described are fairly representative of those employed in the coal mines of Eastern Canada. As such, they may be of interest to Western Canadian coal mine operators. The treatment of the subject is general, no attempt being made to discuss blasting operations at any particular coal mine in detail. All the mines dealt with are mining bituminous coal and are classified under the Coal Mines Regulation Act of the Province of Nova Scotia as 'closed light' mines. As such, they are required to use only 'permitted' explosives and to apply them in a 'permitted' manner, except where authority is given by the Mines Department to do otherwise.

"IntroductionTen years ago, when nuclear fission became practical, the element uranium, until then a not very desirable by-.product of the radium industry, became overnight the strategic material par excellence. One of the several important problems that had to be solved at that time was the rapid and precise determination of uranium in ores and concentrates.GeneralThe chemical analysis of uranium ores is a long and difficult business and is complicated by the presence in most ores of a large number of interfering elements. True, much progress has been made, during the past few years, toward simplification of the analytical methods, but the chemical determination still remains the job of a skilled operator. For this reason, the chemical method has been replaced, whenever possible, by a physical determination based on the measurement of the radiations emitted by the elements of the uranium family. There are several types of instruments suitable for these measurements, but of all the radiation detectors known to the physicist, such as ionization chambers, crystal detectors, scintillation, proportional counters, and the like, the Geiger-Mueller counters have proved to be the most satisfactory for routine determinations, because of their simplicity.The Geiger-Mueller counter is a very versatile instrument; it can be constructed to detect any type of radiation, corpuscular -0r electromagnetic. Here, however, we are interested in these counters because of their ability to detect the beta and the gamma radiations, both emitted by some members of the uranium family. "Potentially economic stratiform barite-sulphide deposits have recently been discovered in Devonian basinal facies rocks of the Kechika Trough of northeast British Columbia. This new mineral district is over 180 kilometres long and includes nine major occurrences, namely Driftpile Creek, Bear, Mount Alcock, Cirque, Fluke, Pie, Elf, Kwadacha and Sika. The Cirque is the largest known deposit, with reserves of atleast 30 million tonnes averaging 10per cent combined lead-zinc and 47 grams per tonne silver. The footwall rocks for the Cirque and other strati/rom barite-sulphide deposits in the area are rhythmically bedded baritic and pyritic carbonaceous black shales, siliceous argillites and cherts of probable Mid to Late Devonian age. These siliceous rocks overlie a succession of proximal to distal turbidites which are the basinal equivalent of Early to Mid Devonian carbonate reefs to the east. The siliceous facies is overlain by deeper-water black shales of probable Late Devonian to Mississippian age.Preliminary stratigraphic and sedimentological investigations suggest that the strati/arm massive pyrite and bedded barite deposits formed in third-order euxinic basins within a northwest-trending structurally controlled trough which, in the southern part of the district, was bounded by carbonate reefs. The exhalative event, which appears to have been accompanied by synsedimentary faulting, took place during the early stages of a major eastward-directed marine transgression that was probably related to rapid crustal subsidence. Dewatering of metal-enriched shales and subsequent brine discharge along fault zones within the trough, with the exhaled brines accumulating in seafloor depressions, is the mechanism envisaged for formation of the deposits. Convective circulation systems may have been established about the more deep-seated faults, in response to elevated heat flow levels."
