Bio-mining is a cost-effective, energy efficient and potentially environmentally protective method of exploiting a variety of ore deposits, from high-grade base metal deposits of nickel to lower-grade uranium and rare earth deposits such as are found in the uraniferous quartz-pebble conglomerate beds of the Quirke Syncline, Elliot Lake, Ontario. The effectiveness of bio-mining in Elliot Lake depends on the success of bacterially-influenced dissolution of metals of economic importance. The determination of both the dissolution efficiency and rate controls for uranium and rare earth elements from bio-extraction processes is critical to assess the potential for success of bio-mining along the Quirke Syncline. This poster provides an overview of proton-mediated biogeochemical dissolution of more than 50 elements, including uranium and rare earth elements from samples of the low grade uraniferous ore collected as drill core from the Elliot Lake area. The elemental data is quantified using advanced spectroscopic tools (ICP-MS and ICP-AES) to analyze solutions obtained from a series of environmentally controlled biologically-mediated uranium ore extraction experiments. The findings are being to guide design of larger scale bio-leaching experiments to further assess the potential for success of bio-mining along the Quirke Syncline.

"Canada's largest known chromite deposit occurs in a layered intrusion in the Bird River area of Manitoba. However, numerically most of the chromite occurrences are in the Appalachians. Few, apparently minor, occurrences are also known in the Cordillera.In the Appalachians, chromite occurs as lenses and pods in dunite; they are of ""podiform"" type. The individual concentrations vary in size from a few pounds to tens of thousands of tons. Locally, chromite concentrations form discontinuous zones extending several hundred feet along strike and presumably down dip, therefore resembling boudinaged layers. Chromite layering and lineation are commonly concordant to those of the host rocks.The Appalachian chromite occurrences are thought to have been formed by fractional crystallization and perhaps also by liquid immiscibility. Their present shape and distribution are largely the result of deformation mostly prior to complete solidification of their host rocks. Therefore, the attitude of layering, foliation, lineation and other features related to deformation provide valuable guides in predicting the probable distribution of chromite, and hence are helpful in exploration.Chromites fulfilling the requirements for metallurgical, refractory and chemical grades occur in the Appalachians. Although the Appalachian deposits are similar in size and grade to some of the chromite deposits being mined elsewhere, they are unlikely to be economic, at present, in the higher wage Canadian environment. However, in case of shortages in chromite ore supply which may result, among other reasons, from increasing tendency to further processing in the producing countries, the Appalachian occurrences may become sources of ore. Such eventual shortages combined with relative abundance of electricity in Canada and recent innovations in oxide ore reduction technology may hasten the time when ferrochrome manufacture based on local chromite sources becomes economically viable."

"The Bathurst area has recorded mining production as early as 1837, although the bulk of the production has come in recent years. Production has been mainly from the well-known massive sulphide deposits, but vein, gossan, and a variety of other deposits have also been mined. This paper summarizes the history of the mined deposits, along with tonnages and grades produced.A number of ""firsts"" have been noted in the Bathurst area. The A Zone deposit, located in the Heath Steele area, was the first in the world discovered using airborne electromagnetic methods. Heap leaching of gold from the gossan zone at Caribou was the first operation of its kind in Canada. The Keymet mine was the first base metal (lead-zinc) mine in New Brunswick. For the past few years, the Brunswick No. 12 mine has been one of the largest zinc mines in the world.IntroductionThe Bathurst area (Fig. I) first had mining production in 1837 when copper was mined from a deposit on the Nepisiquit river (MacKenzie, 1958). The majority of the production, however, has been in recent years from massive sulphide deposits, but there are also other significant operations.Table I is a summary of Bathurst area mineral production, showing concentrator feed tonnages and mill feed grades. The table does not include peat deposits, sand and gravel, dimension stone or rock quarries. Figure I is a general geology map of the Bathurst area, indicating deposit locations. The deposits are divided into four categories: massive sulphide, vein, gossan and other. The deposits in each category are described in chronological order of exploitation."

"The Ainsworth mining camp is on the west side of Kootenay lake; British Columbia; 14 miles south of the town of Kaslo. It is in one of the oldest mining districts in central British Columbia; for mining started there in 1888. Its principal production was between 1905 and 1920. Activity since then has been sporadic. According to available records; some 222; 000 tons of ore had been produced from the camp up to 1942.GENERAL GEOLOGY Bedrock in the district consists of a succession of quartzite, quartz-mica schist, hornblende schist, and limestone of Late Precambrian, Carboniferous, and Triassic age. Most of the hornblende schists are of volcanic origin but some formed from related intrusions. The Nelson granodiorite batholith of Jurassic age borders the camp on the west. There is also a series of basic dykes of much later age."

"In addition to the actual energy consumed, billing is dependent on the peak load and the power factor. The lower the power factor goes, the higher will be the penalty the consumer pays. The principles of a power factor regulator, the two ways of improving the power factor and methods for calculating the capacitor values required will be described.The rate structure of the utility company is founded on three cornerstones: the energy consumed during a given period of time and two penalties imposed when the power factor is low or the power demand is high. Even though the normal consumption of a customer might be 10 kW, with a peak demand of 20 kW only once a month, the wiring and associated equipment at the input to the customer's plant will have to accommodate this peak demand. The power company has no means of forecasting these demands and cannot therefore provide the additional equipment necessary. So it exacts a penalty, and the customer must take all possible steps to avoid these peak power demands. This can be accomplished by using an automatic peak load regulator which will selectively disconnect the loads which are not essential in the operation of a plant .The principles of such a controller will be described.Principles of power factor regulatorsThe operating principles of a power factor regulator will now be described. It might be asked why the power factor of an electrical installation in a mine, or a factory, should be corrected at all, but there is a simple answer. The northern part of the P. G. E. railway traverses and opens up that part of the province known as the Cariboo district, comprising the Cariboo and Quesnel Mining Divisions, which are a part of the Northeastern Mineral Survey District. Williams lake, a divisional point on the P. G. E. is near the southern boundary of the Quesnel Division and from this point the railway runs northerly to Quesnel, its present terminus. From Quesnel the railway is projected and partially constructed to Prince George on the Canadian National railway; therefore its general trend is northerly through the heart of the Cariboo district. Early History There is no need to outline at any length the early history of mining in the Cariboo. It is sufficient to say that the great gold rush to the Cariboo, in the early sixties, was practically the commencement of mining in British Columbia. These early placer mining operations centred around the old towns of Quesnel Forks, Keithley Creek, Barkerville and Van Winkle, the latter now called Stanley. Many millions of dollars of placer gold have been taken out and the end of production is not in sight yet. The maximum yearly production was reached about 1863, after which there was a gradual decline in output. During the war years production was at a very low figure but a steady, even if small, increase has occurred in the last three years and prospects are encouraging for a much greater output.

"A key barrier to vertical mineshaft construction is the construction access required for workers. A suspended work stage is used to provide this access for the mechanical, electrical and structural applications and other tasks. Work stage design is complicated considering the numerous types of construction activities that are executed simultaneously, the confined environment in which the work stage operates, the significant corrosion attack that is present, the weight limitations imposed by the mechanical hoist systems, and the risks associated with worker safety. Also complicating the design, these structures and their construction environment can vary with time. Hence, they can be described as 4D structures. The author has discovered significant synergies and advantages with integrating engineering design with detailed three-dimensional (3D) fabrication design. The significant reduction of minor design errors needing field correction will be underscored. The tender process is also accelerated since the design output is fabrication shop drawings including a detailed quantity takeoff output which lists each component required and its specific quantity. The paper presented will document the numerous advantages to the project using this approach. "Data from a standardized procedure for measuring methane desorption rates from samples of Western Canadian coals gave a good correlation (0.994) with the percentage of fines (-0.6 mm) found in the corresponding run-of-mine coal. The correlation was independent of the mining method and the top size of the samples. It is suggested that both methane desorption rate and the production of fine coal sizes are functions of the fissuration of the coal being mined.This relationship, in conjunction with established data of degradation by unit process equipment, may be useful in predicting the amount of fines that will be produced from new seams of coal and by planned new washeries. It also could be a valuable guide in modifying existing washery processes to minimize production of fines."

It deals mainly with the long tailing and concentrate lines. In the Ontario Division, it operates 13 mines, 5 mills, a smelter, an iron ore plant and 3 refineries, all engaged in the mining and recovery of nickel and copper. This paper describes the slurry pumping practices in the mills of the Ontario Division.The PumpsWe have in our Sudbury area mills most of the available types of slurry pumps, in sizes from one inch up to twelve inches, a total of about 400 pumps. The rubber-lined, horizontal shaft pump is; most numerous. However, for certain applications, the hard-metal pump is essential, and is becoming more popular for general mill service. Two types of vertical shaft pumps are used. There are a few diaphragm pumps on small thickeners, but the larger thickeners have centrifugal pumps either directly connected to the under-flow or with one pump handling several gravity underflows. We have not used piston or plunger pumps in our mills."

Electronic Product and Process Management [EPPM] systems provide the capability to establish and map information flow between different parties in a construction project as well as model project processes. Much of the information relating to processes and their structure, the actors that operate them, and the data associated with each instance of a process is encapsulated within workflows. The wealth of information contained in an EPPM system can be exploited to extract knowledge that can provide significant cost benefits to construction companies. Workflows provide an ideal medium for the capture of knowledge over the course of a project lifecycle. We demonstrate how this knowledge may then be used to analyze workflows and determine metrics that establish the suitability of workflows to construction processes. We present a conceptual approach to measure the performance of a workflow, its constituent components and evolution, which may be used to lay the foundation for establishing paragon workflows suited to classes of construction activities.

"Scandium is a highly valuable element belonging to the rare earth elements (REE) but it has different chemical and physical properties from those of lanthanides. This metal is generally used in aluminum-scandium alloys and in fuel cells but the development of its market is slowed down by its high price (more than 1000 US$/kg for a 99.0% grade product). Indeed, the low scandium content in the continental crust (an average of 22 ppm) and the difficulties to extract it selectively from solutions containing high impurity concentrations increase the cost of the recovery processes. Nowadays, scandium is primarily recovered as a byproduct.ERAMET is developing a hydrometallurgical process in Gabon (Mabounié) in which the scandium content in the deposit reaches 10 to 100 ppm. The Maboumine project consists in the extraction and purification of uranium, niobium, tantalum and REE from Mabounié ore. In the frame of this hydrometallurgical project, ERAMET had also studied the feasibility to recover scandium as a byproduct. During the ore leaching, uranium and rare earth elements including scandium are solubilized into the pregnant leach solution (PLS). Among the various methods investigated to recover scandium from the PLS, liquid-liquid extraction using Primene JM-T as extractant was chosen and tested first at laboratory scale and then at pilot scale. Selective stripping of the loaded organic was carried out by using phosphoric acid solution, allowing the selective recovery of scandium from thorium and zirconium partially extracted from the PLS by Primene JM-T under the process conditions."

"All milling operations would like to achieve the best possible recovery in combination with the highest achievable throughput. Unfortunately, many operations have problems with low recovery, low throughput or both. In the majority of these cases investigated by the author, the solutions to improve recovery and throughput were simple. The solutions did not include implementation of new technology or major capital, but rather a return to fundamentals. In most cases, problems occurred because the operation was not following their own operating procedures, because the design of the circuit was changed without adequate change management or understanding of the implications of changes, or because basic metallurgical measurements and control were not taken or ignored. In this paper, examples of these problems and their solutions derived from long and varied experience will be discussed. The objective of this presentation is to provide the milling operator with practical and readily implementable solutions to common milling issues to improve throughput and recovery.INTRODUCTION Mill operations can be evaluated by many operating parameters, but the two best indicators are recovery and throughput. These two parameters summarize the wellbeing of an operation. The grade to the mill is also a good indicator, but this is usually controlled by the mine. The best recovery and throughput are achieved through a team work involving operators, maintenance workers and metallurgical staff. The milling operations include many unit operations, such as crushing, grinding, flotation, leaching, carbon in leach, Merrill Crowe, roaster, autoclave and refinery. The tools available to the operations are plant design, process measurements, assays, metallurgical balance, and operating strategy. Twelve real life examples of improvements of recovery and throughput are presented in this paper. EXAMPLE 1: CRUSHING CIRCUIT WITHOUT FINE ORE BIN At this operation plant throughput could not be maintained at a high rate because feed to the mill became coarse during the day. The cone crusher was feeding the ball mill directly. As the day wore on, the gap on the cone crusher would slowly increase, which would cause the product size to increase. This would increase the re-circulating load on the ball mill. The throughput would decrease accordingly. Furthermore, the throughput would decrease more with high frequency of maintenance on the cone crusher."

"This paper presents the design and application of blasthole mining to an area at Strathcona Mine previously employing post pillar cut-and-fill. Extensive mining in the area had led to gradually deteriorating ground conditions and post pillar stoping was no longer considered acceptable. Alternative methods had to be investigated.Conventional methods for mining in poor ground were rejected because of the high cost. Blasthole mining was selected because iI offered good productivity and safety with acceptable costs. The design of this approach involved field investigations and the use of numerical modelling to simulate the different blasthole options and their impact on ground stability. The blasthole design incorporated reinforcement with cablebolts, use of a radio-controlled remote LHD unit, large-diameter holes, blast design and wall control. Potentially unstable areas were outlined during mining with ground monitoring instruments and the results used to modify mining plans during the production phase.IntroductionIn underground metal mines there is a need to improve safety and productivity and lower mining costs in order to maintain reasonable rates of return on investment. This requires the application of good engineering design to both mine planning and ground control in order to optimize production and costs and to forecast potential problems during mining. The task becomes more important when extensive mining leads to gradually deteriorating ground conditions, making existing mining methods and techniques no longer acceptable from a safety point of view. Alternative mining methods must, however, be sufficiently productive to ensure profitability. This paper presents an example of the engineering design and operating approach used by Falconbridge in dealing with such a situation at Strathcona Mine."

"Based on plant mineralogical data & circuit modelling, a pilot plant campaign was conducted at Strathcona Mill to identify options for improving the performance and operating flexibility of the copper-nickel separation circuits. Emphasis was given to options for combined treatment of the two feed streams (primary nickel ore rougher concentrate and copper ore circuit concentrate) to obtain more flexibility in the use of existing column flotation capacities. The pilot test results demonstrated that circuits which incorporated preconcentration prior to column flotation gave the best metallurgical results. Maximum column carrying rates were also related to the preconcentration. Predictions that increased circulating loads from the column scavengers would improve copper-nickel separation performance were confirmed.IntroductionThe copper-nickel separation circuits at Falconbridge's Strathcona Mill produce a high grade (>30% Cu) copper concentrate most of which is treated at the Falconbridge Kidd Creek smelter near Timmins. The remaining nickel concentrate which still contains approximately 20% of the feed copper is combined with other lower grade nickel/copper concentrates and shipped to the Falconbridge nickel smelter. The separation is required because of the limited capacity for copper processing in and downstream from the nickel smelter. Since no nickel is recovered at present in the Kidd smelter, the challenge is to minimize the nickel content of the copper concentrate.At present there are two independent separation circuits treating the rougher concentrates from the copper and nickel circuits as shown in Figure I. The minerals treated are mainly chalcopyrite and pentlandite but there is up to 25% of the copper present as cubanite in the copper ore. The circuits were kept separate because the flotation rates and froth characteristics were very different, probably because of the presence of cubanite and the large difference in the concentrate grades feeding the circuits."

Thick westward prograding clastic wedges were deposited along the margin of ancestral North America from Mid-Proterozoic to Mid-Paleozoic time. Periodic rifting and tectonic subsidence resulted in the formation of starved sub-basins along this otherwise passive continental margin. These sub-basins host important sedimentary exhalative barite-zinc-lead-silver deposits. In northeastern British Columbia, a thick succession of Paleozoic basinal facies clastic rocks is preserved within the northwest-trending Kechika Trough. Within the trough, sedimentary exhalative barite and barite-sulfide deposits occur in starved basin sediments of Middle Ordovician, Early Silurian, and Late Devonian age. The last are the most economically sigrrificant and are hosted by carbonaceous cherty argillites and siliceous shales of the Middle to Late Devonian Gunsteel Formation of the Lower Earn Group. The largest deposit, Cirque, has reserves in excess of 35 million tonnes averaging 100J0 (Pb +Zn) and 47 g/t Ag. Other potentially significant deposits include Driftpile Creek, Bear, Mt. Alcock, Fluke, Pie and Elf. Stratiform barite deposits are also common, particularly near the basin-to-shelf transition zone. The Late Devonian barite-sulfide deposits typically are zoned: interlarninated barite-sphalerite-galena-pyrite occurring near suspected vent areas grades outward into bedded barite. Laminated beds of pyrite typically occur in hangingwall siliceous shales, particularly above the inferred vent zone. The apparent absence of epigenetic stringer sulfide zones and footwall alteration implies that the deposits were formed from ponded brines at relatively low temperature. Away from the main deposits, the favourable stratigraphic interval is marked by the presence of thin beds of nodular and laminated barite and thin laminae of pyrite. Thin tuff beds also occur locally in this stratigraphic interval and are evidence for a Late Devonian volcanic event. A paleogeographic reconstruction of the Kechika Trough in Late Devonian to Mississippian time suggests that the barite-sulfide deposits formed in third-order starved basins between uplifted, northwest-trending horst blocks that were capped by shallow-water carbonate banks. The presence of intraformational breccias suggests that fault movement accompanied barite-sulfide precipitation. This tectonic activity may have allowed the escape of heated, overpressured metalliferous brines from permeable reservoirs within the sedimentary pile. Sedimentary exhalative deposits formed where these brines were exhaled as buoyant plumes onto the seafloor, cooled, and ponded in anoxic seafloor depressions.

SIDBEC commenced detailed planning of major capital expenditures to install integrated steelmaking facilities in 1969. Today, less than IO years later, SIDBEC and its subsidiaries have completed major mining, concentrating, pelletizing, direct reduction ? electric furnace steelmaking and continuous casting plants. The total cost of these projects was almost 1 billion dollars. The philosophy behind the project planning and the evolution of management control are explained. These extensive projects were undertaken during a period of exceptional inflation and a disturbed labour climate, but were nevertheless completed with only modest overruns, with good control of timetables and with exceptionally good start-up performance. Project planning, relations with consulting engineers, introduction of new technology, purchasing and field management and cost control are discussed.
