Arsenopyrite is often associated with sulphides like pyrite, chalcopyrite and galena in refrac-tory gold ores. Selective flotation of arsenopyrite from associated sulphides is desirable for effective gold extraction when the gold is preferentially associated with the arsenopyrite matrix. By contrast, presence of arsenopyrite in flotation tailings poses a serious environmental threat due to arsenic dissolution. To prevent arsenic contamination from the mine wastes, it would be more economical and environmentally beneficial to remove this mineral during the froth flotation step. Use of Acidithiobacillus thiooxidans in the detoxification of arsenic containing sulphides is outlined in this pa-per. Biomodulation using Acidithiobacillus thiooxidans resulted in the preferential depression of pyrite from arsenopyrite. By suitable conditioning with cells and collector effective separation of arsenopyrite from pyrite was achieved. Biomodulation with wild cells did not yield separation of arsenopyrite from chalcopyrite. However, bacterial affinity could be induced to a desired sulfide mineral through environmentally controlled adaptation techniques. Through the use of arsenic-adapted bacterial cells, selective removal of arsenopyrite from chalcopyrite was readily achieved.

The froth flotation process for separation of mineral ores depends on the establishment of care-fully controlled froth. The formation of very stable froth in the flotation circuit is a problem that may occur in many plants, resulting in down-time, low quality and grade of final product and considerable expenses. Froths build up on the top surfaces of thickeners, tanks and flotation cells until they overflow, or until the efficiency of the circuit is impaired. A similar problem exists in Assarel concentrator, Assarel-Medet PLC, Bulgaria. Copper and copper-pyrite ores are dressed in Assarel concentrator. They are characterized with variable and complex mineral and physical composition. During the flotation cycle, resilient and difficult to break-down froth is formed, which subsequently impedes the process of thickening and clear overflow obtaining. Due to this problem continuous sampling in the cycle of thickening was conducted. The mineralogical, chemical composition, particle size distribution and solid phase content of the products were determined. It was established that the solid phase of the froth build up on the top surface of the thickener differs considerably from this one of the thickener underflow. The data clearly indicates that a separation process takes place on the top surface of the thickener ? fine particles of chalcopyrite are concentrated in the froth. The role of chemical reagent addition in the break-down of the flotation froth is investigated in terms of surface chemical phenomena involved in the stabilized froths. Measurements of the coper minerals wettability and surface tension at the air/liquid interface were performed. The surface active agent AERODRI® dewatering aids were laboratory tested. Bench-scale froth collapse tests were conducted. Reagent addition into pulp-froth system promotes and leads to a bubble coalescence, an improvement of the wetting of the mineral particles and a decrease of the surface tension at the air/liquid interface. The results of the laboratory experiments showed that the presence of the surface active agent leads to considerably decrease of the froth stability and the destruction of the deleterious froths build up on the top surface of the thickeners in Assarel concentrator.

"Magotteaux and Anglo Platinum started a co-operation program with the main aim of establishing the optimum milling configuration measured in terms of throughput, fineness and energy consumption.For this purpose, a fully instrumented pilot milling plant, supplied by Magotteaux (Pty) Ltd, and equipped with a 0.9 x 1.0 m ball mill, was erected at Frank concentrator (Merensky Pt ore). The primary ball mills at Frank concentrator were surveyed in order to set the conditions for the base case. This data was then replicated in the pilot mill under the same configuration. Thereafter, a series of different parameters were varied in order to attempt to optimize the milling system.Some of the grinding parameters that have been studied are:•,Gate versus overflow discharge•,Open versus closed circuit•,Different filling degrees•,Different shell liner profilesOnly grate versus overflow discharge and open versus closed circuit will be discussed in this paper.It should be noted that this paper does not attempt to give a universal solution as to what milling configuration is optimum in all cases. The conclusions apply for this particular case and probably most others, but it would be advisable to consider each case on its own."

"Lithium is the lightest of the metals, with high reactivity and great electrochemical potential. It has a low thermal expansion coefficient and high caloric value, and it forms very light and resistant aluminium alloys. These properties make lithium an attractive element for use in battery manufacture and glass and ceramics production, in addition to its applications in the aeronautic industry. Today, two sources of raw material are economically viable for lithium production: pegmatite rocks and brine. The world production, in 2012, was approximately 150,000 tons of LCE (lithium carbonate equivalent), almost triple the production in 2000. The forecasted consumption for the current year, 2013, was approximately 162,000 tons of LCE, and for 2020, it could be as much as 280,000 tons of LCE, stimulated essentially by the growth of world production of electric (EV), hybrid (HEV) and hybrid plug-in vehicles (PHEV), the batteries of which are based on Li-ions. With the growth of world demand and increasing prices, lithium minerals such as spodumene, petalite and amblygonite, once considered uneconomical for the production of lithium carbonate, are regaining their economic value. New projects to produce lithium compounds based on mineral sources are being developed in many countries, aiming to produce battery-grade lithium carbonate (99.95% Li2CO3). Although Brazil has large lithium pegmatite reserves, the domestic production of lithium carbonate and hydroxide is very low, at approximately 600 tons of LCE, which represents 0.4% of the world production. The application of these products is mostly in the grease and ceramic industries. The national lithium market is under government protection due to its potential use for nuclear purposes. Thus, the industrialization activities and import and export of ores and lithium minerals, as well as organic and inorganic products, such as metallic lithium and lithium alloys, are controlled by the National Commission for Nuclear Energy (Comissão Nacional de Energia Nuclear - CNEN). The objectives of this work to quantify the real lithium demand in the Brazilian market, considering that a large amount of lithium is indirectly imported in the form of the Li-ion batteries used in equipment such as mobile phones, cameras, tablets, notebooks and e-bikes, and to compare this demand with the current national production of LCE. Finally, some technological alternatives will be discussed, with the aim of increasing the competitiveness of the lithium industry in Brazil."

"In pre-design a flotation plant copper sulphide is useful to apply a simplified methodology of economic analysis that relates the size of the grinding product (P80) with the throughput and their effect on copper grade and recovery of copper in the final concentrate of a flotation circuit. With this objective, this methodology covers the following analysis, perform by evaluation of five sizes grinding products (P80): 120, 150, 180, 210 and 240 microns. • Flotation testwork (rougher kinetic, open and closed cycle test) has been done to determinate the optimum operating conditions and to estimate the maximum recovery of copper in the concentrate, using Klimpell model • Flotation plant design assumes a conminution product obtained from a 25,000 HP ball mill • Metallurgical balance is performed for the circuit based on flotation testwork • Economic evaluation by calculating capital expenditure (CAPEX), operating expenditure (OPEX) and sales revenue, to determine NPV is performed and relates to the NPV. An optimum grind size is then obtained based on cash flow. The results shows a grinding product size that optimizes flotation and allows a higher NPV and INPV over other alternatives."

Biomining technology focuses on achieving effective recovery of precious metals from their ores and concentrates using microbial techniques. Biomineral extraction of manganese from low-grade manganese ores using bioleaching was investigated in this paper. Five fungal strains were selected for screening of bioleaching of low-grade Mn ore collected from Sanindpur iron and manganese mines, Koira Sector, Keonjhar, Odisha, India. A fungal strain, Aspergillus niger was selected as it showed high efficiency of manganese leaching. Growth of the fungus was determined in terms of sbiomass dry weight and the final pH was monitored. The selected fungal strain was used for bioleaching of low-grade manganese ore of -150µm size particle size at 2 % pulp density with 2g/100ml sucrose concentration for duration of 20 days. About 60 % of Mn bioleaching was obtained with A. niger. The fungal species proved to be useful for manganese biomining.

"The combined use of semiconductor properties and specific flotation characteristics of minerals under different conditions with external influences ensures a possibility for process control and management. This work presents the relations between the volumetric and surface characteristics of minerals and the minerals' flotation ability (flotability), as well as the possibility for the flotability purposeful change. Results from proprietary laboratory and industrial research are presented showing how controlled impacts on minerals and flotation pulp improve flotation technology. Such an approach reveals prospects for the creation of new technologies for the minerals' beneficiation.INTRODUCTIONThe decrease of the useful components content in the ores, the increasingly complex nature of the raw materials, the increasing energy consumption per the unit of production, and the need to solve the problems related to the environment pollution require solutions different than the existing classical ones. One of the ways to find such solutions is the detailed consideration of the fundamental properties of minerals and, in particular, of minerals having semiconductor properties. The studies of Plaksin et al. (1968), Chanturia and Shafeev (1977), Chanturia and Vigdergauz (2008), Carta et al. (1973), Hoberg and Shneider (1975), Rao et al. (1992) have given an idea of the energy state of the minerals, their flotation ability, and the ways in which this ability can be changed in one or the other direction. The main line in these works is the study and use of the relationship between bulk and flotation properties of minerals. To improve the efficiency of the process, it is also necessary to consider the relationship between the surface properties of the minerals, especially minerals-semiconductors, and their flotation ability.THEORETICAL BACKGROUND IN BRIEFA quantitative estimation of energy changes in a solid phase in the process of flotation may be made by taking in account the changes in the Fermi level. Its position in the forbidden band is an indicator about the direction and the intensity of electron exchange between solid and liquid phases. The Fermi level energy EF enables the estimation of flotability, intensity of needed external impact before flotation, as well as efficiency of the process going on. Quantitative estimation of these processes can be made by means of the flotability coefficient Kf."

"The first 90 years of the last century generated a considerable volume of technical literature on the subject of grinding mill power and its prediction. It is therefore surprising that during this time there were no published models for predicting grinding mill power draw which were validated using a wide range of comprehensive industrial scale data.Notwithstanding this lack of data, the majority of models placed limited emphasis on the internal dynamics of mills and relied on simple assumptions which considered the charge to take up a fixed position and shape.Laboratory based studies (Liddell, 1986), and industrial data (Morrell, 1993), showed that these assumptions did not hold over a wide range of operating conditions, and brought into doubt the ability of the (then) existing models to accurately predict grinding mill power draw. Furthermore no model treated AG,SAG and ball mills as a single class of devices whose power draw could be predicted with the same equations.Through a detailed investigation of the charge dynamics, coupled with a large data base of industrial mill power draws, this situation was rectified by the end of the century, by which time a model had been developed and validated, which accurately predicted the power draw of all wet tumbling mills. This paper describes this model and reviews some of the earlier attempts at mill power modelling."

The importance of brown coal as a raw material is currently given by growing energy needs of Czech Republic. More than 70% of mined brown coal comes from North Bohemian Basin these days. Mining of brown coal is run in four mining locations. They are geologically different and the parameters of mining coal are quite different too. This requires a little bit different methodology of both extraction and reclamation. Methods of reclamation works in the region are given mainly by the characteristics of overburden rocks appearing in the upper horizon of recuperated localities. The difficulties of the North Bohemian mine dumps reclamation works are caused by extremely unfavourable properties of rocks poured down to the majority of mine dumps. These are mainly rocks of the overlaying strata and the rocks strata of brown coal bed. Main materials poured down to the mine dumps are sands, clayey sands and kaolin ? illitic clays. Admixtures in filled rocks consist of organic (coal) mass, siderite and pyrite. These rocks are mechanically instable with respect to the wind and water erosion and during weathering they are getting unfavourable, acid (phytotoxic) nature, due to the influence of SO3 and Al ions. External and internal dumps of open pit mines are significant part of the North ? Bohemian landscape sustained by excavation. Their as fast as possible preparation and gradual integration into ecosystem of the area is interest of both citizens of region and mining companies. The paper briefly summarizes the methodology of restoration of the largest dumps of the North Bohemian Brown Coal Basin and the results of analyses and evaluation of samples taken on restored localities Rado-vesice dump, Strimice dump, Ru?odol dum pand internal dump of Bilina mine. An example of modern non-tradicional restoration methods is the restoration of internal dump of Bilina mine (application of power plant stabilizer). According to observations and results of sample analyses the methods of restoration were selected to limit the erosion influence, adjust the chemical and physical composition of surface of Radovesice and Strimice dumps. The application of marlites and bentonite prevent the unfavourable weathering processes on dump surface. Compensation of Quaternary sediments was artifically formed here. The need of marlite ploughing in, application of organical substrates and vegetation preparation was proved on Radovesice dump. The conception of landscape reclamation of the largest dumps after finishing of mining, methodology of technical reclamation and well considered using of fertilizable soils are main results presented in this article.

"Banded iron formations are the major iron source for producing high grade concentrate. BIF are generally lower grade and more difficult to extract. In order to know how best to process BIF ore, it require comprehensive knowledge on ore bodies even in the early stages of the mining process. Geometallurgy combines geological and mineral processing information and allows for higher flexibility in response to changes in the plant feed when mining different parts of the ore. This can lead to economic benefits, owing to improved plant operation, yet is time consuming and correspondingly costly. The main focus of this paper work has been to develop a comprehensive geometallurgical testing framework for developing Yogi BIF low grade magnetite deposit located at Western Australia. In order to provide successful geometallurgical mapping, was collected data from several different disciplines (geology, chemistry, mineralogy) and parameters (physical properties, metallurgical response and geotechnical measurements) during drilling activities and test work. The investigation shown magnetic separation behavior of material had high variation and is most important element in the proper design of ore beneficiation plant. This paper provides an improved and efficient magnetic separation test methods used for the investigation of separation behavior and variability of the Yogi Ore deposit and evaluates their applicability and potential in the geometallurgical context. In this paper a small-scale magnetic separation has been developed that allows estimating from single pass separation test using small amounts of sample material. Verification of the evaluation method and validation was done with different mineral systems."

Biosorption of heavy metals can be an effective process for the removal of heavy metal ions from aqueous solutions. In this study, the adsorption properties of nonliving (boiling in NaOH) biomass of phanerochaete chrysosporium. For Pb (II) and Zn (II) were investigated by using batch adsorption techniques. The effects of initial metal ion concentration, initial pH, biosorbent concentration, stirring speed, effect of temperature and contact time on biosorption efficiency were studied. Experimental results indicated that the uptake capacity and adsorption yield of one metal ion were reduced by the presence of the other metal ion. In the experiments the optimum pH value was found out 6.0. The experimental adsorption data were fitted to the Langmuir and Frundlich adsorption models. The highest metals uptake was calculated for Zn (II) and Pb (II) were 57 and 87 respectively. desorption of heavy metal ions was performed by 50 mM HNO3 solution. The results indicated that the biomass of p.chrysosporium is a suitable biosorbent for removing heavy metals ion from aqueous solution.

A common and disappointing theme in the majority of them, however, is the distinct lack of suitable experimentally derived power draw data. This deficiency consequently limited the practical application of many of the attempts at modelling mill power draw. Prior to the early 1990?s some limited data on the power draw of grinding mills in the literature can be found, but as Harris et al (1985) remarked they are ?... too frequently unusable simply because one or more essential variables have been omitted?. The absence of published results, from vigorous experimental testing of the various models, has resulted in a general lack of evaluation of the validity of assumptions and hypotheses that such models contain. Harris et al (1985) however, did make some efforts in attempting to evaluate the performance of various power prediction equations and in so doing further developed a semi-empirical one of their own. However, in using manufacturers? published data, which themselves were undoubtedly generated by proprietary equations of unproven validity, they probably succeeded in generating little more than a consensus of the various errors in these models."

India ranks fourth in the world of iron ore production and exported 55% of the total iron ore production of 180.9 million tons in 2006-07. As per United Nations Framework Classification (UNFC), the total iron ore reserves in India is 25249 mt. This consists of about 14630 mt of Hematite ore and 10619 mt of Magnetite ore. While the deposits of magnetite iron ore are limited to the states of Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu, hematite ore is available in abundance in Jharkhand, Orissa, Chhattisgarh, Karnataka and Goa. National Steel Policy, declared by government of India in 2005 envisages 110 million tons of steel production by 2020. This is likely to be revised upwards. Massive exploration work in iron ore is needed to convert the available resources of iron ore into reserve category. Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) produced more than 24.5 million tons of iron ore during 2006-07 and plans to produce 42.0 million tons per year by the year 2010-11 to meet the requirement for a hot metal production of 26.2 million tons. While processing iron ore, the challenge faced would be the reduction of the gangue materials ? alumina and silica. It is proposed to bring down alumina and silica in the iron ore to less than 2% each from the current level of 2.5%~3.5% each. Appropriate beneficiation schemes are being developed depending upon the mineralogical characteristics of iron ores at different mines in the country. The state-of-art beneficiation technologies like Hydro-cyclone, jigging, magnetic separation etc. will be incorporated. SAIL?s corporate plan envisages blast furnace burden of 15% iron ore lumps, 15% pellets and 70% sinter by 2010. This strategy opens up the opportunity of utilization of micro fines generated in the mining and beneficiation processes for pellet making. This also directs towards all together new technological approach to the beneficiation process. SAIL is planning to set-up three pelletisation plants of 2~3 mtpa capacity. Environmental issues like reduction in slime loss and utilization of dumped low-grade iron ore are very important. R&D Centre for Iron and Steel, SAIL has carried out extensive laboratory investigations in the above area. This will help in reducing the loss of valuable iron through slimes and also increase the iron ore resource base. Laboratory investigations indicate that low grade dumped ore fines with Fe: 55.5% can be upgraded to a product with Fe: 66.2% with about 48% recovery.

The froth phase plays an important role in the flotation and upgrading of the final concentrate. At present, the techniques that have been used in the mineral industry to measure the froth recovery have limitations. The aim of this paper is to investigate the performance of the froth in an industrial flotation cell. A unique device has been developed which is capable of decoupling the froth zone from the pulp zone. It consists of two concentric tubes. The inner tube acts as a dropback collection chamber or catcher. The particles that detach from the froth phase fall directly into the catcher and are collected as froth dropback. The froth recovery measurements were carried out in a rougher bank of a copper concentrator treating sulphide minerals. The dropback device is designed so that it can be immersed into a plant size flotation cell and plant froth recovery measurements can be taken at any given time. During the experiments, the bubbles laden with valuable mineral particles entered the device from the plant flotation cell, subsequently rising to form a froth layer at the top of the device. The particles that detached from the froth zone were collected in the dropback collection chamber whereas the concentrate sample was collected by a launder. By drying, sizing and chemical analysis of the concentrate and dropback samples, the froth recovery, was estimated on the basis of the valuable component. Recent results from electrochemical measurements demonstrate that trithiocarbonate (TTC) collectors are more readily oxidized to their corresponding dithiolates than the dithiocarbonate/xanthate (DTC) collectors. Based on the traditional analysis of collector adsorption, trithiocarbonates might then be expected to be effective for bulk sulfide mineral flotation. Previous bench-scale flotation research had shown that TTC collectors are very effective for the flotation of copper sulfide minerals and PGM (platinum group metal) sulfide minerals. More recently, the TTC collectors were evaluated for auriferous pyrite recovery in benchscale plant scale flotation testing in the United States and in plant tests at Anglogold in South Africa. TTC collectors were also applied in bench-scale testing of a PGM ore. In each case an improved separation efficiency was realized. Fundamental studies at the University of Utah examining the effect of collector structure (functional group, -O-CS2 versus .S-CS2), specifically with respect to auriferous pyrite flotation, are in progress. The effect of collector structure was evaluated with air as well as nitrogen as the flotation gas medium. Experimental techniques utilized included electrochemically controlled contact angle measurements to evaluate mineral hydrophobicity and infrared spectroscopy to explain collector adsorption phenomena at the mineral surface.

"In this study, a three level Box- Behnken factorial design combined with Response surface methodology (RSM) for modeling of process parameters of Multi Gravity Separator (MGS) for recovery Iron values from sub grade iron ore, Deposit No. 5, Bailadila complex has been developed. The three significant operational parameters of MGS, Drum rotational speed (RPM), Drum inclination (degrees) and quantity of wash water (LPM) were considered in the experimental work. Other parameters like feed percent solids, shake frequency and shake amplitude were maintained constant. The ‘as received’ sub grade iron ore sample is admixture of lump and fines and chemically assayed 40.80% Fe, 40.90% SiO2, 0.24% Al2O3 and 0.22% Loss on Ignition (LOI). The obtained results were evaluated with the Box-Behnken factorial design, RSM and also Quadratic programming(QP). Second order response functions were produced for Fe in terms of grade (%) and recovery (%) of the concentrate fraction. Taking advantage of QP, it was observed that maximum grade of 62.21% Fe achieved at an inclination of 4.3degrees, 2.7LPM of wash water and at a drum speed of 198 RPM. Similarly a maximum Fe recovery of 65.37% weight can be achieved at 4.3degrees inclination, 2.6LPM wash water and at a rotational speed of 212 RPM Predicted values of responses obtained using model equations were in good agreement with the experimental values. The influence of the process variables of the multi gravity separator concentrator on grade and recovery of concentrate fraction were presented and discussed."

Two lines of single stage autogenous milling circuits have been installed and commissioned as the primary grinding process for the Sino Iron project where magnetite ore is treated to produce iron concentrate via magnetic separation. Various challenges were encountered during the commissioning and ramp up stages which are discussed in the paper and include treating a highly competent ore in a closed circuit AG mill, operating the largest mills in the world and dealing with a number of engineering issues related to plant operability. Details of how these challenges were overcome are described as well as the observed operating characteristics of the mills and their optimisation through rigorous study, simulation and successful solution implementation. Further potential improvement opportunities are also discussed as part of the ongoing technical program at site.

"Geo-sensing is the ability to routinely measure or infer rock properties at a range of scales using non-destructive scanning devices. These devices can provide information and data flows to support integrated decision making across the minerals value chain. Geo-sensing has been used for many years in minerals exploration using technologies such as satellite imaging and airborne geophysics but to date the use of sensing technologies in between the mine and mill has been very limited. The aim of this research is to develop new mineral sensing technologies that can enable grade engineered ore streams through the rejection of low value gangue or deleterious elements either in the pit or during transfer to the mill. This paper focusses on the research and development being carried out by the Cooperative Research Centre for Optimising Resource Extraction (CRC ORE) and its associated members on new sensing technologies. At the start of their development these technologies were classified on the Technology Readiness Level scale at 3 (TRL3), equivalent to a proof of concept. Laboratory testing and design is aimed at progressing these sensing technologies to TRL5 which is ready for testing at an end users site. New data obtained during the laboratory testing and design phases are presented in the paper demonstrating performance specifications such as detection limits and measurement speed which can be used to infer the pod size of gangue that can be rejected at scale. Grade Engineering® and coarse gangue rejection are considered as key drivers for the mining industry to address the higher mining, processing and environmental costs associated with ore bodies with declining grades. Taknar polymetal (Cu-Zn-Au-Ag-Pb) deposit and concentration flotation plant are located in the northeast of Iran. The flotation feed contains Chalcopyrite, sphalerite and pyrite with 4, 4 and 8 percent respectively. Cu and Zn contents are 1.26 and 3.5 present. Pyrite decreases the quality of base metal concentrates and increases the amount of sulfur compounds produced in the base metal extraction processes. Therefore, depression of pyrite is essential in the concentration of base metal sulfides by flotation. For flotation tests, 4 mixed collector systems, MIBC (20g/t), lime and tow depression systems (sodium cyanide (60g/t)-zinc sulphate and dextrin (300g/t)-zinc sulphate) were used as collector, frother, pH regulator and pyrite-sphalerite depressants in the chalcopyrite flotation stage, respectively, and SIPX, MIBC, lime and copper sulphate (as activator) were used in sphalerite flotation from first stage tailings. The results have shown that, sodium cyanide is a suitable depressant for pyrite and sphalerite in the first stage of flotation. Compared to dextrin as depressant, chalcopyrite recovery was decreased approximately 1.83%. In addition, when sodium cyanide was used as pyrite depressant, copper sulphate consumption raised approximately 90 g/t for activation of sphalerite. From Environment and HSE points of view, dextrin is natural, biodegradable, and non-toxic while cyanide is very high toxic. Calcite and magnesite are both carbonate minerals and their crystals belong to trigonal system. Flotation tests were carried out to investigate the flotation behaviors of calcite and magnesite. The test results show that the floatability of calcite and magnesite under different grinding environment had obvious differences. The floatability of calcite using sodium oleate as collector after dry grinding is better than wet grinding, but the floatability of magnesite after wet grinding is better than dry grinding. The XPS surface elements test and zeta potential measurement show that, wet and dry grinding process makes the distribution difference of surface anion and metal cation, then influence the floatability of the two carbonate minerals using sodium oleate as collector. Difference of the carbonate crystal structure and solubility properties was also investigated. Research shows that crystal structure difference of calcite and magnesite causes the difference of solubility, which can influence the flotation behaviors under different grinding environment.
