Fine grinding of crystalline graphite was conducted using a dry attrition mill with a vacuum system to investigate the characteristics of size reduction. Low pressure and high temperature conditions in the grinding mill were found to greatly improve the efficiency of the size reduction of graphite. Natural flaky graphite of .100 mesh was ground into sub-micron sizes, then over 90% of the product were able to be reduced below 1?without disrupting their crystallinity in a short period of time. Reducing the atmospheric pressure in the grinding environment promotes the removal of chemical species such as oxygen and water molecules adsorbed on the graphite particle, resulting in effective size reduction while maintaining the crystallinity of graphite.

The process of liquid?liquid extraction of gold from chloride solution is complicated by the presence of many variables acting simultaneously in an unknown non-linear fashion for the determination of the final extraction efficiency. In practice, it is quite difficult to develop a model for predicting various properties of such process. Therefore, an alternative approach based on Artificial Neural Network (ANN) is considered to assist in the simulation process. Artificial neural networks (ANN) are powerful tools that can be used to model and investigate various highly complex and non-linear phenomena. This paper presents application of Multi-Layer Perceptions (MLP) to construct relationship that will be employed to develop a quantitative method for the estimation of the extraction efficiency as a function of hydrodynamical parameters such as stirrer speed, [AuCl4]- and DBC concentration, organic and aqueous flow rate. The model is shown to be in excellent agreement with the experimental data (R2 value for training and testing data was 0.9992 and 0.9915 respectively). Therefore, it can be used to optimize the parameters of liquid?liquid gold extraction with dibutyl carbitol (DBC).

The process of gold(I) adsorption on activated carbon (AC) from aqueous Na[Au(CN)2] and the state of the adsorbed gold cyanide complex on the adsorbent surface was investigated by photometry, XPS, XANES methods. By DFT method, quantum-chemical calculations were performed of the gold cyanide species on activated carbon surface. It was established that the binding of gold(I) with the surface of carbon involved several simultaneous processes governing the selective adsorption of gold(I) from the cyanide solutions.

At the regrind or secondary grinding stages of base metal ores, the concern about energy efficiency is usually extremely important. In general, the specific energy consumption at this stage is higher than during the primary grinding stages. In addition, a tendency of finer grinding has been observed in the new projects of metallic minerals, due to the finer mineral liberation, which leads to increasing capital and operational costs. At Vale?s new copper projects in Brazil, regrind sizes with a P80 of approximately 40 to 20 µm have been necessary. Conventional ball mills, adequate for primary grinding, usually bring about low energy efficiency with products bellow 50 µm. Vale is using the vertical mill on its copper projects ? Sossego and Salobo, in order to optimize the regrind of rougher concentrates and reduce energy consumption. This paper presents the results of industrial surveys carried out on the Vertical mill circuits of Sossego plant during its initial years of operation, and compares these results with the design criteria and laboratory regrind tests used for the mill scale up. Because of the extremely low utilization of strain energy in the breakage of solid particles, the energy efficiency prevalent in comminution technology is extremely poor. Schoenert considered that single-particle comminution under slow compression is the most energy-efficient mode of comminution and that energy efficiency should be compared to that. The usual method for grinding minerals and cement has been the ball mill, in which the hit-and-miss aspect of loose-bed comminution severely reduces energy efficiency. The fine grinding of minerals is a particularly energy-intensive process. Schoenert showed that the energy consumed in the comminution of particles in confined beds is second only to that of single-particle comminution under slow compression and developed the method of conducting particle-bed comminution continuously in a high-pressure roll mill. Since its first industrial installation in 1985, the high-pressure roll mill has established itself as the comminution device of choice for significantly improving the productivity and energy efficiency of size reduction from coarse size feeds down to products finer than 20 microns. The first of several hundred installations were in cement plants. The preliminary design and optimization of the industrial operation of high-pressure grinding roll (HPGR) systems, owing to the continuous nature of the device, cannot be efficiently done through laboratory experiments and needs to be achieved through proper system modeling. While the energetics of size reduction in high-pressure grinding rolls has been modeled very well, no model exists for the macroscopic variables in HPGR comminution. In high-pressure roll mill grinding, size reduction results from confined particle-bed comminution under compressive stresses such that the daughter particles produced are highly fractured, stressed, or otherwise weakened. This paper attempts to relate the comminution / compaction behavior for confined particle-bed under compression in a piston-die press with the macroscopic variables in HPGR comminution. A model describing the pressure-densification relationship is presented and used to accurately simulate the macroscopic variables in high-pressure grinding rolls, utilizing experimental data for particle-bed comminution with the piston-die press. The accuracy of the predictive simulations strongly suggests that, starting with a few batch-mode laboratory-scale experiments, it should be possible not only to identify the optimal operating conditions for existing operations but also to successfully design new industrial high- pressure grinding roll systems.

At the rougher flotation circuit of the Miduk copper concentration plant (Kerman, Iran) five column cells (CISA) with the diameter of 4m and height of 12m using static mixer type (MicrocelTM) spargers have been installed. Based on the initial design, columns should accept a feed rate of 625 t/h with 80% passing size of 90 µm and solids concentration of 28% and produce 88% of the plant concentrate (i.e., 22 t/h) containing 32% copper. Due to mechanical and processing problems this objective was never realized and theses columns were remained out of operation from the commissioning time (2005). A new attempt with the aim of returning these cells into operation started in 2013. The results of an extensive study indicated that spargers plugging due to the entrance of small amount (2 kg) of coarse particles (up to 2.5 cm) because of usual problems at the plant environment was the main reason of columns non functionality. With a change in the recycle pump inlet design to the column, which prevented the entrance of coarse particles to the spargers, the operation of the column significantly improved. It was found that in order to have a stable operation of the columns at the rougher stage the feed rate for each column should be reduced from 125 (design) to 70 t/h. The air superficial rate had to be also reduced from 1.9 (design) to 0.6 cm/s. A period of 10 days of continuous operation showed that the carrying capacity was 0.23 (g/min/cm2) which was significantly lower that of the design value (i.e., 0.58). The gas hold up was found to be lower than 10% beyond which columns started to move to the turbulent state indicated by "boiling" froth. The average life time of spargers was determined to be 20 days which considered to be very short. The average recovery and concentrate grade of these columns were found to be 68% and 32%, respectively. The high wear rates of spargers, unusually high level of maintenance and supervision needed and instability of the operation made the plant managers not to use column cells as the roughers.

Thiol collector mixtures are commonly used in the flotation of base metal sulfides and platinum-bearing ores. There are synergistic benefits claimed for these collector mixtures, with mixtures lowering total dosage requirements, improving coarse particle recovery and the rate of flotation. Some of the secondary collectors are known to have frothing effects. Therefore, a previous study aimed to decouple froth and pulp effects and considered only the bubble-particle attachments in the pulp. This was achieved through microflotation experiments, where various ratios of the ethyl and isobutyl chain lengths of xanthates, dithiocarbamates and dithiophosphates were used as collectors. Results from these experiments showed a marked increase in galena recovery using mixtures of xanthate with either dithiophosphate or dithiocarbamate. In the current study, the froth phase was introduced in the form of batch flotation studies to determine whether benefits noted during microflotation experiments would be carried through to a more realistic froth flotation scenario. The findings show that there was no significant difference in the flotation recovery between the best single collectors and mixtures of these collectors. In addition, single collectors that behaved poorly in microflotation experiments showed good flotation performance in the batch flotation experiments. The differences between the microflotation results and the batch flotation results are attributed to differences in particle froth stabilizing properties and/or differences in energy input between the microflotation and batch flotation cells. In this paper, the development of research and practice on the separation process of fine complex Cu-S ore at a Copper Mine in south of China, was discussed. Since early 1980s, various processes were used, such as the process of bulk flotation-separation, the process of selection flotation and the process of iso-flotation. Especially when the process of selective flotation was put into operation, further development was achieved in beneficiation results, but the difficulty in separation of chalcopyrite from pyrite has not been solved yet, so causing a poor quality of Cu concentrate. The author has successfully developed a new separation process characterized by the use of collector thionocarbamate and fast flotation. The selectivity of fine chalcopyrite and pyrite was greatly improved. This process supplied a new route for the treatment of fine complex Copper sulphide ores.

"Covellite is one of the most important copper sulfide minerals. Its behavior during the anodic polarization, as well as its rest potential in various solutions are of importance for flotation processes and also define the mechanism of electrochemical extraction of copper from sulfide minerals.Measurements of the rest potential have been performed in water solutions in presence of different cations and anions. The existence of the Nernst type dependence of the rest potential on the activity of some of the investigated ions was established. The biggest influence on the rest potential of covellite exhibits the change of activities of the ions forming the crystal lattice of investigated mineral, i.e. Cu(II) and S(II). The dependence of the rest potential of covellite on logarithm of Cu(II) activity has a shape of a strait line with a positive slope of 60 mV, while when concentration of S(II) anions increases ten times, the rest potential of covellite decreases about 120 mV. The first dependence was established in acid medium, while the second was registered in alkali one.Different electrochemical techniques have been used for the investigation of the behavior of covellite during anodic polarization. In the basis of all these measurements is a three electrode system consisted of: 1) working electrode made of the sample of natural covellite from the Bor mine (Eastern Serbia, Yugoslavia); 2) reference electrode (saturated calomel electrode) and 3) counter electrode (flat platinum). Electrolyte solutions used in these investigations are of the same kind as those used in the rest potential measurements. Sulfate and chloride solutions, as well as the mixed sulfate/chloride solutions, are the most perspective from the application point of view.Cyclic voltammetry has been the first used method that confirmed the formation of passive layer on the electrode surface during anodic polarization. Elementary data about the reaction mechanism have been obtained too. More detailed data needed for more precise conclusions about the mechanism and rate of the anodic process on covellite have been obtained by galvanostatic method. It was established that the essential difference exists between the reaction mechanism in sulfate and chloride solutions. Also, the difference is exhibited in the nature of reaction product directly connected with the passivation of the electrode surface. Chronopotentiometric investigations have been performed in sulfate, nitrate, chloride perchlorate and mixed sulfate/chloride solutions applying different current densities. The shape of obtained curves indicate if there was a surface passivation and how intensive it was."

"The flotation process, largely used for mineral concentration processes, which is based on air bubble adhesion to the dispersed solid phase, is also being used for wastewater treatment purposes. Dissolved air flotation (DAF) is based on the separation of the solid-liquid phases with the aid of small air bubbles (10-100 µm), with high values of interfacial contact area, improving the process efficiency. In the process, the air bubbles and particles or flocs form aggregates, which rise to the surface of the flotation cell to be collected. The advantage of producing small bubbles is directly related to the fact that smaller bubbles result in greater bubble-particle interaction. Wastewater produced in alumina refinery - from the red mud filtration step - has a red colored aspect due to the presence of very fine particles of red mud and also dissolved matter that still remain in the filtrate. This wastewater might be treated, aiming to reuse the water in the refinery or discharge it properly in the environment. The aim of this study was to evaluate the DAF process efficiency for the treatment of red mud wastewater in order to decrease suspended particles and dissolved solids contents, in addition to mitigate the high causticity of this wastewater. The process efficiency was evaluated by comparing turbidity removal and total solids concentration in the treated wastewater to the feed. The influence of important variables of the DAF process as type and concentration of coagulant and flocculant were evaluated. It was possible to obtain good turbidity removal efficiencies (up to 90%) using low concentrations of coagulant (50 mg/L) and flocculant (0.5 -1.0 mg/L). In addition, for most of the experiments, the specification for effluent diposal, according to the Brazilian environmental regulation 430 (Conama, 2011): pH range 5 to 9 and turbidity < 40 NTU, was attained. These results emphasize the possibility of using the DAF as an alternative technique to settling and filtration process, that are traditionally used, for treating wastewater from the alumina industry, allowing the reuse of water in the plant or adequate discharge with less environmental impact."

"IsaMill™ has been in operation in the recent past for fine grinding of low grade ores to extract non-ferrous minerals. IsaMill™, typically, consists of a series of uniformly spaced identical disks mounted on a rotating shaft which is encased in an outer shell. The mill offers high energy efficiency for fine grinding and an inherent scalability. But, it encounters certain operational challenges such as non-uniform distribution of grinding media coupled with high wear rate of the disks and solid walls of the mill at specific locations—which adversely affect the mill performance. To circumvent these operational challenges, design modification of the disks through heuristics, by introducing a reduced diameter disk (RDD) at specific locations, is a common practice in industry. But there is no systematic scientific study in this regard. In the current work, we developed a discrete element method (DEM) based model and simulated for the IsaMill™ operation to study the effect of RDD on the efficiency of the mill and wear rate of the solid walls and disks. Since the first set of disks experience the high wear rate due to the high loading of the charge, the RDD was introduced at the first two disks. The simulations were performed at different diameters of the RDDs and at different media loadings. The performance of the mill was analyzed based on the power consumption, the wear rate on disks and the distribution of media particles inside the mill. Besides, the performance variables such as mean velocity of media particles and total impact energy provided useful insights into the milling operation. It was observed that the reduction in disk diameter yields lower wear rate of the disks at the cost of decrease in power draw at a constant high media loading. Whereas, when the media loading was decreased, the amount of wear and power drawn was comparable for both the most reduced and least reduced disk diameters. Therefore, there is an optimum choice of RDD for a given mill loading to maximize the mill performance while reducing the wear rate of the disks."

A novel ilmenite collector, tert-butyl benzoic hydroxamic acid (TBHA), was investigated in this paper. The flotation performance and adsorption mechanism of TBHA to ilmenite were evaluated through pure mineral flotation tests, ?-potential measurement and IR spectrum analysis. The experiment results indicated that TBHA exhibited strong collecting capability to ilmenite under pH 6.0-8.5. At pH 7.0-10.0, TBHA existed in the form of anionic species in aqueous solution, and the ?-potential measurement results showed the surface of ilmenite maintained negative and more negative after the adsorption TBHA on it, which inferred that TBHA might adsorb on the surface of ilmenite through chemical interaction. The IR spectrum analysis further confirmed the chemical interaction between TBHA and ilmenite surface. "The purpose of this research is providing a flotation process for recovery of lead in lead silver residues from a zinc smelting plant with a new hydroximic acid collector (HOC). The collecting ability and reaction mechanisms of HOC were investigated based on pure mineral flotation tests and analysis of zeta potential. The pure anglesite flotation tests showed that HOC has a good collecting ability for anglesite. Zeta potential measurements proved that HOC adsorbed on anglesite surface physically and chemically. The lead-silver residues in a zinc smelting plant with lead grade about 17.5% was used as raw material for flotation tests. The results showed that under the conditions of pH adjusting agent lime 500g/t, inhibitors sodium silicate 2000g/t, collector HOC 1500g/t, frother alcohol oil 75g/t, the grade of the lead concentrate can be reach 47.18% and the recovery was 76.39% by one roughing-one scavenging-three cleaning and middles back to the flow-sheet in turn after the lead-silver residues were washed by two stages of cleaning-filtration.INTRODUCTION Nowadays, with the increasing exploitation of natural mineral resources, more and more secondary resources should be researched and used for the valuable metals. Hydrometallurgical zinc leaching residues, which contain a considerable amount of zinc, lead, silver and other minor valuable constituents, is a typical and abundant secondary resources (Zhang et al., 2011). A huge quantity of zinc leaching residues (ZLR) had been produced per year (Jiang et al., 2017).This residues not only occupy precious land but also threaten the environment because of the dissolved heavy metals especially in rainy days (Han et al., 2014). Consequently, it is urgent to develop an effective and clean method to dispose this residues which can benefit not only in economical but also in environmental (Jha et al., 2001)."

In this study, the authors investigated the capability of an acidic thiourea solution and silicon-organic polymers (PSTM-3c, PSTM-3T) as ion-exchange resins to recover of gold from gold-bearing ore concentrates. Firstly, elemental gold present in flotation concentrates was dissolved by leaching with a solution of nitric acid and thiourea under the optimized conditions. The best result on gold thiourea leaching was obtained under a nitric acid concentration of 2 N, thiourea concentration of 2 %, and oxidant (Fe2(SO4)3) concentration of 3 %, solid:liquid ratio (S:L) of 1:20, leaching time of 6 hours at 20 °C with a gold recovery of 93.7 % for a gold flotation (unroasted) concentrate. For the roasted gold concentrate, the dissolution of gold was 94.8% under the optimized leaching condition as nitric acid concentration of 0.5 N, thiourea concentration of 2 %, and the oxidant concentration of 1 %, S:L ratio of 1:10, leaching time of 4 hours at 50 °C. Secondly, a series of sorption tests was carried out on a pregnant leach solution containing gold complex Au[S=C(NH2)2]2+ using silicon-organic polymers (PSTM-3c and PSTM-3T), respectively. The effects of solution pH, adsorption time and temperature in the sorption process are also studied. As the results, the PSTM-3c and PSTM-3T polymers were adsorbed about 94.4 % and 95.1 % gold from the pregnant leach solutions under the optimum sorption conditions, respectively. It was found that the both PSTM-3c and PSTM-3T polymers were effective for the recovery of gold from the pregnant leach solution of thiourea. Adsorption activity of the PSTM-3c and PSTM-3T polymers was confirmed by new peaks near 1700 cm-1 in the FT-IR spectrum of the gold-adsorbed polymers, respectively.

"The adsorption of xanthate takes place at a different potential on each major sulfide mineral, hence, as it was demonstrated in the past, each mineral component can be selectively separated from ore under well controlled potential conditions. In real flotation this concept never works out for two reasons: the potential of single mineral particle results from complex surface reactions controlled by solution chemistry, and there is a galvanic interaction between different mineral particles present in the flotation pulp.In this study the formation of amyl xanthate hydrophobic products on pyrite, galena and chalcopyrite has been spectroscopically investigated in the presence of combinations of these minerals. The type of the adsorbed species and their amount were determined directly on mineral surfaces by infrared external reflection technique. Galvanic contact between grains of two different minerals has tremendous consequence on the adsorption of collector on both minerals. The detected changes are dramatic, from no adsorption to a coverage formation of a few monolayers. The results obtained indicate clearly that the observations and conclusions about the collector adsorption, hence also the surface hydrophobization, made for a single mineral system does not describe the real situation in a multi-component mineral system such as flotation pulp."

"Vizcachitas is an advanced stage copper–molybdenum porphyry deposit, fully owned by Los Andes Copper and located in Central Chile. The property contains an indicated resource of 1,038 million tonnes grading 0.37% Cu and 0.012% Mo, and an inferred resource of 318 million tonnes grading 0.345% Cu and 0.013% Mo (Coffey & Alquimia, 2014). The deposit occurs in the same geological belt as several other giant copper-molybdenum porphyry deposits including Río Blanco-Los Bronces, Los Pelambres-Pachon and El Teniente. In 2018, the original Preliminary Economic Assessment (PEA) study from 2014 was updated; this paper presents the geometallurgical testwork that was performed to support that update. The testwork focused on the metallurgical characterization of 40 DDH samples and the development of a more profound orebody knowledge by relating geological features with metallurgical performance. The scope of work included complete chemical and mineralogical QemSCAN characterization; SAG, ball mill and abrasion testing; complete rougher and cleaner kinetics including locked-cycle-test; environmental ABA and settling tests on rougher tailings. The results show that the ore can be classified as medium-hard, with a hardness that is slightly below the average for large Cu/Mo deposits in the region. A good correlation was found between lithology and breakage characteristics, implying that the specific energy consumption (kWh/t) is well correlated to rock type. The results of the flotation tests were very encouraging and did not show significant variability. An overall Cu recovery of 91% can be expected for the flotation circuit. The use of a relatively coarse primary grind size gave good final recovery and grade for both Cu and Mo, and deserves further attention in future work, as this impacts positively both energy consumption and water recovery.INTRODUCTION Los Andes Copper Ltd. is a Canadian exploration and development company focused on the acquisition, exploration and development of advanced stage copper deposits in Latin America. "High alumina content in the Indian iron ore fines (2.5% Al2O3) resulted in poor quality pellets at the recently commissioned 6 MTPA pelletizing plant and a study was under taken to establish suitable pellet chemistry through proper fluxing agents. Limestone fluxed pellets were prepared at varying basicity (0 to 0.8) and pyroxenite fluxed pellets at varying MgO contents (0 to 3%) to study their effect on the metallurgical properties. Fired pellets were tested for their strength, RDI, reducibility and swelling. Microstructural studies, optical and SEM-EDS, were carried out to quantify different phases and their chemistry. Acid pellets exhibited poor quality whereas limestone pellets at 0.8 basicity and pyroxenite pellets at 1.5% MgO exhibited optimum metallurgical quality. Formation of widely distributed silicate melt in limestone pellets and high melting point slag & magnesioferrite in pyroxenite pellets found to improve their quality. However during commercial production of MgO bearing pyroxenite pellets, their room temperature and low temperature properties found to be inferior, but exhibited better high temperature properties, viz. softening-melting behavior. Contrary to this, commercially produced limestone pellets, comprising CaO, exhibited better strength and RDI but showed poor high temperature properties. To yield the benefits of both CaO (for good strength and RDI) and MgO (for low swelling and high softening), a dual flux combination was established by using both limestone and pyroxenite/olivine together that resulted in optimum metallurgical properties. Coke rate at the blast furnaces found to be reduced by 1kg for every1% increase of dual flux pellets in the burden.INTRODUCTION Iron ore agglomerate quality plays a vital role in decreasing the reducing agent consumption and increasing the productivity of blast furnace. In most of the integrated steel works, the burden mix for blast furnace is decided as per the availability of the iron ore agglomerates like sinter and pellets. More attention has been given in recent years to the use of fluxed pellets in blast furnace due to their good strength and improved reducibility, swelling and softening melting characteristics. Generally, quality of pellets is influenced by the nature of ore or concentrate, associated gangue, type and amount of fluxes added and their subsequent treatment to produce pellets. These factors in turn result in the variation of physicochemical properties of the coexisting phases and their distribution during pellet induration. Hence properties of the pellets are largely governed by the form and degree of bonding achieved between ore particles and the stability of these bonding phases during reduction of iron oxides (Panigraphy et al., 1990). It is important to note that conditions and parameters of pelletizing are specific to given ore or concentrate; the present study is undertaken for typical Indian hematite ore fines high in alumina. Except authors earlier work on quality of pellets from Indian iron ore (Dwarapudi et al., 2008, 2010), there is no considerable literature reported on the effect of pellet basicity and MgO content in the basicity range of 0 to 0.8 for Indian hematite ore."

In this paper, the application of the metallurgical residue produced from oceanic cobalt-rich crusts leaching process is studied in the area of wastewater treatment. The modification of the sulfuric acid leached residue and the adsorption behavior behaviour of heavy metal ions such as (Pb(II), Cu(II), Zn(II), Cd(II), Ni(II), Mn(II), Co(II), As(III)) in the waste-water on the surface of the residue are investigated. The rate of adsorption efficiency of heavy metal ions in the wastewater on the modified sulfuric acid leached residue is investigated. It is showed that when the initial pH value of wastewater containing heavy metal ions including Pb(II), Cu(II), Co(II), Ni(II), Mn(II), Zn(II), Cd(II) and As(III) range from 1.4 to 1.9, with the use of the modified leached residue, As(III) ion can be selectively separated from wastewater, and the separation efficiency can reach 90%~100%. The adsorption efficiency is affected by pH, reaction time, amount of adsorbent and the initial concentration of heavy metal ions in wastewater. The results showed that the optimum pH was natural pH value and the absorption equilibrium time was 2 hours. The adsorption efficiency of heavy metal ions increases with the addition of adsorbent and de- creases with the increase of the initial concentrations of heavy metal ions in wastewater. The heavy metal ions polluted wastewater, of which concentration is about 22.5~793.6 mg/L, can meet the national disposal standard for industrial wastewaters in China very well, after 2 hours treated by 3.75~7.50 g/L modified adsorbent at room temperature. Standard methods were used to investaged investigate the absorption behaviour between abosorbentabsorbent and metal ions in the wastewater. It is concluded that the adsorption behaviour of Co(II), Mn(II) and As(III) ion fits Freundlich iso-therm, while the adsorption behaviour of Pb(II), Cu(II), Zn(II), Cd(II) and Ni(II) ions fits Langmuir isotherm, and the saturated adsorption amount of the modified adsorbent is about 54.0~336.7mg metal/g?adsorbentabsorbent. It is suggested that the modified sulfuric acid leached residue produced from oceanic cobalt-rich crusts is environmentally attractive and meaningful as absorbent used in heavy metal ions polluted wastewater.

Batch wise adsorption tests for platinum (Pt) on the surface of activated carbon pellets (Norit RO 0.8 BET surface area 1100 mg/g) were carried out in mixed chloride solution. The purpose of this study was to assess and compare the adsorption performance of amine-treated activated carbons (AACs) and native activated carbons (NACs) in terms of adsorption capacity and selectivity. The effect of pH and temperature on adsorption capacity and selectivity was established. The amine- treated ACs were prepared by anchoring the amino groups (butyl amines) on the surface of AC pellets in aqueous media and the UV-Vis was used to determine the amount of amine sequestered from solution by ACs. The dosage of butyl amine on the surface of ACs averaged 0.15 g/g, carbon. The adsorption mechanism was described by the ionization and complexation model whereby interaction between the protonated AAC surface and the anionic chlorocomplex ions (PtCl5 [H2O]-, PtCl62-) proceeded by either electrostatic attraction or/and by covalent bonding [(NH3)2PtCl6 or (CH2COO)2PtCl6]. By comparison, the adsorption capacities of Pt on amine-treated ACs and native ACs were 53.8 mg/g and 33.03 mg/g, respectively which highlight the benefits of anchoring functional molecules on ACs. The selectivity of AACs was influenced by solution pH. Pt adsorbed selectively on the surface of amine-treated ACs at pH<1.5. The highest separation factor that was recoded pertained to Pt and Fe species (ßPt/Fe = 90) then followed by Pt and Ni species (ßPt/Ni = 30) or Pt and Cu species (ßPt/Cu = 15). The lowest separation factor was recorded for Pt and Cr ions (ßPt/N= 5). Adsorption kinetics of Pt on amine-treated AC surfaces, according to the first and second order reactions, were investigated and results showed that rates were in the order 10= 5). -4 min-1 and 102 g?min/mg, respectively. The pseudo 1st order kinetics predicted the adsorption capacity of 51.81 mg/g which was almost similar to the experimental value (53.8 mg/g) while the second order rate equation predicted Pt adsorption capacity of 40.1 mg/g. Both The Langmuir and Toth isotherm fitted the Pt adsorption at pH < 1.0. The Freundlich isotherm tended to underestimate the adsorption capacity of AACs.

"The aim of the project was to develop a methodology applicable to different South African coal types to be able to predict with a high degree of certainty what kind of reagent will be suitable for flotation of a certain coal type.The study included 5 coal samples from different collieries and included Highveld seam 3 and 4 coal (as one sample), Waterberg coal (zone 10 -11), Highveld seam 5 upper coal and Witbank seam 2 and seam 4 coal. Seam 3 and 4 (mixture) coal, Waterberg and the seam 5 upper coal were all found to be vitrinite rich coals. The coal characterisation study included petrographic analysis, proximate analysis, float-sink analysis, oxygen-containing functional groups, surface extraction, flotation release analysis and contact angle measurements.The flotation tests showed that the best reagents to float all of the coal samples studied are iso-decanol and dodecene. These reagents produced flotation products that are near to the release curve. Statistical relationship for predicting ash content and yield that can be expected for a certain coal type and selected collector was obtained. From the relationship, the accuracy of the yield is above 95% (p-value below 0.05) with a linear regression of 0.9289. The accuracy of the ash is slightly lower with a linear regression of 0.7841 but also above 95%."
