For proper blast design, one must make the assumption that all blastholes release nearly ideal energy. In many types of blasting operations, blastholes release very little useful energy. These blastholes are called malfunctioning blastholes. Recent studies indicate that as many as 30 percent of all blastholes are malfunctioning. These malfunctioning blastholes are not an unusual occurrence.

This paper changes the section of copper of copper to aluminum adapter bar into aluminum plate covered one face or double face with copper coat, and changes the conductor material of knife switch, fuse box, plug and socket into steel plate covered one face or double face with copper plate, and manufactures the composite (two layers or three layers) metal plates by means of explosion welding with the plates installed horizontally. Introduced in this paper are the blasting designing technique, manufacturing process and the electrical performances of the explosion bonded products. Besides, this paper presents the designing and manufacturing technique of cumulative charges and their time detonating units for cutting off the retired nuclear submarine pipes. Experiments on cutting off the stainless steel pipes by cumulative flow and on the time detonation are made. During the summers of 1992 and 1993, blasting operations were carried out to effect the crossing of two of Canada's better known game rivers, the Nipigon and Winnipeg, in connection with the completion of a third natural gas utility across north-western Ontario. The Nipigon River, crossed in 1992, involved a single fast-flowing channel while the Winnipeg River, crossed in 1993, involved three separate channels.

This paper presents the results from a series of tests conducted to investigate the total vertical impulse delivered to a target plate by a buried explosive charge. The tests were conducted at a very small scale but previous work has shown that small scale testing can predict impulse applied to plates in full scale. Non-deforming plates were used to determine the change in impulse delivered to targets as a result of changes in standoff distance and burial depth changes.

In the proposed method, the charges are elongated and arranged in one or more arrays. The orientation of each charge in an array, its velocity of propagation of explosion, and the velocity of propagation of vibration in the formation are such that, at an outlying location where vibration is to be reduced, the onset of vibration from explosion of the first negligibly small increment of each charge arrives a finite time before that from explosion of the last negligibly small increment of that charge. The charges of each array are fired in accurately-timed sequence, with the times between initiations chosen so that, at the outlying location, the onset of vibration from explosion of the last small increment of each charge, except the last charge, arrives a negligibly small increment of time before the onset of vibration from explosion of the first negligibly small increment of the succeeding charge. With such timing, vibration may be reduced at the widest range of locations by tilting the boreholes so that the terminal end of each charge is directly above or below the terminal end of the succeeding charge.
