A study was made of scrap iron and steel in the South Central States in order to determine trends in processing, shipment, and consumption of this important commodity. These data were derived in part from statistical sources and in part by visits to scrap yards and steel mills. Trends in the industry were reviewed. Dealers in 1963 supplied 1.8 million tons of iron and steel scrap to steel mills and foundries in the south-central area, compared with 2.1 million tons in 1955. Most of the scrap was processed and shipped within 200 to 300 miles of consuming centers. Exports provide a principal outlet for dealers along the gulf coast. Most of the scrap that fills these orders is loaded onto freight cars at yards in Texas and Louisiana and -is shipped to ports for direct transfer from railroad car to ship. The tonnage exported varies greatly from year to year. The largest scrap operations are in or near large cities which are heavy scrap generating areas, steel mill sites, or port cities for export of scrap. A tentative analysis indicates that the short-run supply of prepared scrap is inelastic to price changes; therefore, buyers probably arc in a strong bargaining position at times of declining demand. One technological development in the iron and steel scrap industry is the use of large presses which can take complete automobiles with frames, wheels, springs, and other heavy parts still intact and reduce them to bundles. At Houston, Tex., and Kansas City, Mo., shredding plants are in operation that reduce car bodies and other light scrap into flat pieces 4 to 6 inches in size.

On January 1, 1961 there were 311 petroleum refineries in the United States with a total crude-oil throughput capacity of slightly more than 10 million barrels per day, according to the Bureau of Mines' annual survey. Compared with a year ago, this represents net increases of one in the number of plants and 109 thousand barrels per day in total capacity. Contributing to this increase was the completion of two new plants, one in Hawaii and another in Michigan, during the year. At the beginning of 1961 the industry was building facilities which will increase this overall crude capacity by 36,500 barrels per day. As part of its building program, it was also replacing 329,000 barrels per day of its present capacity. Of the total 10 million barrel per day installed capacity, the industry reported 380,000 barrels per day as being shut-down on January 1, 1961. This included 11,500 barrels per day considered inoperable without extensive reconditioning.

It has been suggested that radicals on the surface of dust particles are key chemical factors in the pathophysiology that results from the occupational inhalation of coal and silica dust. In addition, oxygenated derivatives of arachidonic acid (eicosanoidsJ have been implicated as important biochemical mediator5 of mineral dust-induced lung disease through their role in bronchial and vascular smooth muscle reactivity, inflammation, and fibrosis. Therefore, we assessed eicosanoid production by the rat alveolar macrophage (AM) exposed in vitro to mineral dusts with varying surface chemical characteristics in order to determine if radicals associated with the mineral dust could influence the production of proinflammatory mediators in the lung environment. Primary cultures of rat AM were exposed to freshly fractured or "stale" bituminous coal dust, as well as untreated silica or silica calcined to 500 and 1100°C. Prostaglandin E1 (PGE;V, thromboxane Ai (T}(Ay, and leukotriene 84 (LTB; levels in incubation medium were determined by specific radioimmunoassay. When AM were exposed to freshly fractured coal dust, PGE2 production was markedly increased. In contrast, exposure of AM to "stale" dust significantly reduced PGE1 production. Exposure of AM to freshly fractured coal dust resulted in a significant increase in production by AM, while exposure to stale coal dust did not influence AM TXA1 production. Neither "fresh" nor "stale" coal dust had any effect on LTB4 production. In vitro exposure of AM to untreated silica resulted in a significant increase in TXA1 PGE.,, TXA; and LTB4 production compared with control. However, exposure of AM to silica calcined to 11oo•c resulted in eicosanoid levels that were not significantly different from control. These effects were still apparent 8 wk after calcination of the silica particles. Silica was a more potent activator of AM eicosanoid production than was coal, and amorphous fumed silica was a more potent activator of AM eicosanoid production than was crystalline silica. These findings suggest that radicals associated with respirable coal and silica particles may play a key role in the ability of mineral dust to activate AM eicosanoid production and therefore may be important in the pathophysiological consequences of occupational mineral dust inhalation.

This report covers the activities of a feasibility study of fiber optics technology fur use in mines. The objective of the study was to evaluate, both technically and cost-wise, the possible use of fiber optic technology for underground mine communication and monitoring systems. The first phase of the study was devoted to the collection of information on the present underground mine communication systems and monitoring techniques, and the status of applicable fiber optic technology. In the second ph se of the study, a communication and monitoring system for a hypothetical underground coal mine was designed and the costs estimated. The significant findings and conclusions are presented.

Work has been carried out under Bureau of Mines Contract No. HO395132 to develop and fabricate gas sensors for mining applications. Promising new instruments have been designed, developed, tested and supplied to meet BuMines requirements. These instruments include prototype 1) remote-sensing, diffusion-type CO monitors for mine operation which can be operated in conjunction with a surface computer, 2) control modules for alternate in-mine readout of the remote diffusion type CO monitors, 3) personal CO diffusion-type dosimeters and 4) personal NO diffusion-type dosimeters. In addition, retrofit modifications were made to update and optimize operation of CO and NO2 direct-reading type detectors provided under a previous contract. Studies were conducted to evaluate and demonstrate the availability of stable, portable N02 calibration sources for NO2 instrumentation. The use of selected, commercially available cylinder sources for NO2 instrument calibration were recommended. Additional studies were also conducted to investigate the feasibility of instrumentation for rapidly monitoring CO, NO and NO2 in diesel exhaust.

All samples tested showed some loss of heating value for the 5-month period under all 4 storage conditions. The losses increased as the time of storage increased, with the pan-storage samples showing somewhat greater losses than those in cans. The individual daily analyses for the first 2 weeks and the analyses every other day for the third and fourth weeks of storage vary within the approximate tolerance of the test for heating value. During the first 2 months of storage the changes in heating values were not Significant for the samples from Pennsylvania, Indiana, and Colorado. The Ohio coal indicated some loss by the end of I month, which increased to a value measurable with certainty by the end of 2 months. These data show that (1) small changes may occur even to samples in closed cans and (2) the laboratory sample should be handled as expeditiously as is practical until the analysis is completed. The statement by the ASTM that "If the B.t.u. determination is an important consideration in the sale of coal, the time elapsed between sampling and analysis shall not exceed 30 days,"3/ is quite adequate for 3 of the 4 coals tested. The change in the Ohio coal stored for 30 days is merely indicated and could not be determined with certainty by the techniques normally employed. The data on free-swelling indexes determined on can samples, after 30° C. air drying, show that only the Indiana coal lost more than one unit in free-swelling index number in 120 days. No significant changes were observed with the samples from Pennsylvania, Ohio, and Colorado in the 5-month period.

This Bureau of Mines report describes a technique for determining the confining pressures that must be provided for stabilizing underground openings in incompetent rock. The technique is adapted for use with a nonlinear finite-element computer code, NONSAP, to obtain stabilization pressures for linear or nonlinear stress distributions in the rock media around the excavation. This analysis permits a point-wise calculation of active rock pressures that depend on the values of shear stress and strength along the excavation surface. The approach is applied to the solution of several sample problems. The results show that both the magnitude and the distribution of stabilizing confining pressures are significantly influenced by rock and joint strengths, joint orientation, and biaxial nature of the load field.

Properties of coal-water slurries were studied in two separate phases: a rheological phase and a pipeline phase. The purpose of the study was to investigate the rheology of fine coal slurries to determine the effect of fine particles in a coal-water mixture on the economic and operational aspects of a slurry pipeline. The slurries consisted of 6x10, 100x200, and 200x0 mesh coal in water. A fourth slurry consisted of a mixture of the 6x10 and 200x0 mesh coal. Brookfield and Stormer rotational viscometers were used to obtain or simulate rheograms for a range of fine coal concentrations, temperatures, and particle sizes. All the slurries were pumped through a 1-inch diameter acrylic pipe. The fine coal slurries were found to encompass four distinct rheological models. The narrow size distribution of the coal slurries was apparently responsible for the high pipewall friction losses, more so than the particle size. A scale-up method applicable to Bingham plastics was found satisfactory for predicting pipeline headlosses of fine coal slurries from rheology data.

Model pillars of limestone, marble, sandstone, and granite with length-to-diameter (L/D) ratios of 3, 2, 1, 0.5, and 0.25 (0.286 for granite) were tested to failure in axial compression to determine to what extent an increase in end constraint increased compressive strength. Adjustable steel rings, mechanically tightened about the ends of test specimens to create a radial prestress of 3,000 or 5,000 psi prior to the application of axial load, increased end constraint more than was possible in previous tests using solid steel rings. (Solid rings, epoxy-bonded to the ends of dogbone specimens, increased compressive strength compared with that of straight specimens without ring constraint.) During the loading cycle, additional end constraint was produced by lateral expansion of the specimens against the rings. The effect of the end constraint was to increase the compressive strength 55 to 58 percent for the shorter pillars of dogbone shape compared with the compressive strength of straight pillars with the same L/D ratios without ring constraint. Most pillars with L/D ratios of less than 2 were made stronger by end constraint. Pillars with an L/D ratio of 3 did not benefit significantly from end constraint. When the results from compression testing of straight specimens of rock in the laboratory are used to design mine pillars in situ, the pillars will be larger than necessary if the horizontal compressive stress is several thousand pounds per square inch greater than that resulting from the weight of the overlying rock alone. The L/D ratio can be increased by a factor of 1.76 for ratios in the range 0.25 to 3 and still provide the same compressive strength. The safety factor applied with straight specimen test results should also be acceptable for use with constrained pillar test results.

The twenty-fourth of a series of semiannual surveys pertaining to motor gasoline marketed in the United States was made by the Bureau of Mines in August, 1931, The first part of a report giving the results of that survey as they pertain to specification data is given in this paper. A companion report, Part II, is in preparation and will discuss the results off other determinations made on the samples, including octane number ratings on the individual samples (to be made by the Bureau of Standards) and results of the determination of gravity, color, doctor test, and "gum" content by the copper dish method and the Bureau of Mines steam-oven method. Bituminous coals having maximum fluidity values in the 40- to 25,400-dial-divisions-per-minute (ddpm) range were carbonized in a continuous, entrained-bed reactor. Carbonization was conducted in an 8-inch diameter, vertical reactor at temperatures from 955° to 1,345° F and at air-to-coal ratios ranging from 4.63 to 16.12 scf/lb of moisture-and ash-free coal charged. Carbonization rates from about 118 to 360 lb/hr, as-carbonized basis, were examined. It was demonstrated that carbonization temperature and air-to-coal ratio must exceed minimum values for continuous operation. Within the operating conditions discussed, highly fluid bituminous coal was carbonized to produce tar and nonagglomerated char. The yield of tar ranged from 21.3 to 38.9 gallons per ton and the char yield ranged from 1,109 to 1,563 pounds per ton, all units expressed on a moisture-and ash-free basis. It was demonstrated that the maximum fluidity and the average size of the coal along with the air-to-coal ratio and the carbonization temperature act together to influence the carbonization product yields and certain properties of the products. Prediction equations were developed from the data for product yields and selected properties of the char, tar, and gas.

"INTRODUCTION As a small amount of manganese was produced from the Lake Valley mining district of Sierra County, N. Mex., during the First World War, the district was reexamined in March 1941 by John H. East, Jr., an engineer of the Bureau of Mines, as a possible source of manganese for use during the Second World War. Preliminary examination indicated a substantial reserve of 25 percent ore, so it was recommended that an exploratory program of mapping and sampling be undertaken by the Bureau.The program was started in the fall of 1941 and was completed the middle of 1942. The project 3/ was divided into two parts: The first, an underground sampling program, formed the basis for the second, or churn-drilling program. Mapping and sampling of old underground workings were begun in October and finished in November 1941, whereas churn drilling was begun in February and completed in June 1942."

This U.S. Bureau of Mines report describes the development, system by system evaluation, and preliminary surface testing of a flywheel-powered shuttle car (FPSC). The use of a self-contained flywheel-power source has the potential to eliminate the numerous safety and routing problems associated with tethered mobile equipment. An alternative to conventional power cable systems was developed consisting of the world's fIrst seven-rotor stacked flywheel system capable of storing 6 kW·h of energy at 16,700 rpm. Numerous interdependent systems were necessary for successful interfacing with a conventional shuttle car. Each of these systems was evaluated and tested individually. Finally, the entire shuttle car was surface tested. The tests indicated that the flywheel energy system can function and operate a shuttle car. The economics of the system and the design of required support systems were not addressed in the project.

The development and operation of "combination wells"5/ have created new and unusual problems, many of which can he solved only if information is available concerning the properties of the fluids produced. Data as to the characteristics of the fluids at the relatively high pressures that exist in the reservoirs are especially important, and there is growing economic concern to know what part, if any, of the liquid recovered at the surface was liquid in the reservoir, As an extension of this problem, it is important to know, whether liquid will be formed in the reservoir as a result of isothermal retrograde condensation when the reservoir pressure is reduced. The pressure range of such condensation, if it occurs, is significant in the design of gas-recycling plants for maintaining reservoir pressures. In connection with the operation of such plants, it is particularly important to know how pressure and temperature will affect the yield of the liquid phase and the composition of the gas to be returned to the reservoir. It has not been possible to predict the behavior of these fluids that have high ratios off gas to liquid by comparing them with the behavior of low gas-liquid ratio fluids at identical pressures and temperatures. Such comparison fails because the proportions in which a component will be distributed between the phases of a system at any given temperature and pressure depend increasingly on the composition of the mixture as the critical temperature and. pressure of the system are approached. Because many combination wells are producing from reservoirs that have temperatures near the critical point, experimental date on the properties of the Fluids under reservoir conditions are particularly important at this time, To meet the immediate requirements of the industry for such experimental information, an equilibrium cell has been constructed at the Petroleum Experiment Station of the Bureau of Mines, Bartlesville, Okla. When adequate experimental date have been accumulated, it may be possible to make dependable estimates of the phase relations for high gas-liquid ratio fluids at the pressures anti temperatures characteristic of "combination-well? reservoirs.

Direct mass spectrometric determination of alcohols in the presence of hydrocarbons has not been possible because of the similarity of hydrocarbon and alcohol mass spectra. Experiments have demonstrated that by converting the alcohols to their trimethylsilyl derivatives, characteristic mass spectra are obtained free of interference from hydrocarbon ion fragmentation. Hexa- methyldisilazane is the reagent selected for the conversion, An improved method of preparing the reagent is given, Mass spectrometric determination of alcohols as trimethylsilyl ethers now is not only possible without prior separation from other materials, but the range of the room-temperature mass spectrometer is also extended to include the C10 alcohol region. Water does not interfere because it is converted to hexamethyldisiloxane, which has its own distinctive mass spectral peak, Experience indicates that other compounds such as glycols, amines, and phenols probably could also be determined by mass spectrometry of their trimethylsilyl ethers. Studies on the similar detemination of phenols in coal oils have been started, When mass spectrometry is not available, gas-liquid chromatography of alcohols before and after their conversion to the trimethylsilyl derivatives probably could be performed. The preparation and properties of the trimethylsilyl derivatives of 23 alcohols, 2 glycols, 3 amines, and 1 mercaptan are detailed. INRODUCTION During investigations by the Bureau of Mines at the Pittsburgh Coal Research Center relative to the development of Fischer-Tropsch processes, complications were encountered in the mass spectrometric analysis of alcohols in hydrocarbon oils. The U.S. Bureau of Mines has determined the microwave heating rates for a suite of minerals and reagent-grade compounds. Maximum temperature achieved for the samples and the time required to reach temperature are reported. Heating rates of powdered samples are presented as a function of incident powers up to 3,000 W at 2,450 MHz. Descriptions of the microwave cavities, test cells, and a thermocouple assembly used to measure temperature in the microwave field are given. Many minerals of value heated in the microwave field, whereas host rock or gangue materials did not. In general, heating rates increased as incident power was increased. Exceptions to this were some very good (CuO, Fe304, and PbS) and very poor (CaC03 and SiO2) microwave-absorbing materials that showed negligible changes with increased power. Applications demonstrating the use of microwave energy in mineral processing that are described herewith include oxidation-reduction reactions, mineral liberation, and mercury retorting-vaporization. Microwave data on mineral heating rates will provide insight to possible chemical and mineral processing applications as well as assist in predictions of processing parameters.

This circular presents results of a survey conducted by the Bureau of Mines to ascertain the extent to which dust-control practices are employed in the coal-mining industry. This survey was initiated because of increasing realization of the possible harmful effects of the inhalation of dust upon the health of coal-mine workers and the advent, during recent years, of new types of mining machinery and new mining methods that may have a direct effect upon the extent of exposure to airborne dust experienced by persons mining coal. Anthracite Mines The survey covered 169 anthracite mines that were operating from November 1, 1953, to July 1, 1954. It showed that large mines employing more than 100 men were doing most to control dust produced during mining.

Illumination hardware developed in conjunction with previous Contracts H024202l, H0242049, and H0242023 had not been adequately tested in actual underground work situations. The purpose of this contract was to install and monitor this equipment on mining machines and in actual working places of coal mines to gain experience with the use of the lamps and support equipment in the abusive and critical environments for which they were intended. The equipment that was to be tested consisted of the following: a. Lamps -A variety of sizes of permissible fluorescent lamps which operate from 12 volts DC power. These include the following sizes: Model 8, (9 watts) 2" diameter; Model 15/2 (14 watts) 2" diameter; Model 15/3 (21 watts) 3" diameter; Model 20 (25 watts) 3" diameter; Model 30, (28 watts) 3" diameter; and Model 40, (39 watts) 311 diameter. Representative photographs of these lamps are shown in Figure 1-1 and 1-2.
