Cameroon continued to enjoy sustained economic growth that began with its independence in 1960. Growth in the gross domestic product (GDP) averaged 2.8% per year during the 1960's and the first half of the 1970's. Starting in 1976 and for the succeeding 10 years, the GDP accelerated rapidly owing to the coming on-stream of Cameroon's small but domestically significant offshore oil industry. In 1985, the GDP grew by 7.8%, but in 1986, it was only up 5.5%. The country's sustained economic growth in dollar terms of gross national product (GNP) per capita reached $1,075 in 1986. The ranking in GNP per capita by the International Monetary Fund put Cameroon in the middle-income category for developing countries. The sustained economic growth rate up to 1986 was due to the injection of income from oil into the economy, but crude oil price reductions in 1986 brought a slowdown. In 1986, crude oil production grew to 200,000 barrels per day, an increase of 8.2% from that of 1985. Most of the oil came from the Société Nationale Elf Aquitaine (SNEA) wells in the multifield Rio del Rey complex. Additional output came from the Moudi Field operated by Compagnie Française des Pétroles S.A. Proven oil reserves in Cameroon were 540 million barrels. At 1986 production rates, and in the absence of further discoveries, Cameroon will have exhausted its recoverable oil reserves by the year 1995. Owing to worldwide crude price reductions, the country's oil income fell 60% between 1985 and 1986, from $1.82 billion2 to $0.72 billion. Cameroon's refinery operator commenced operating the Sonara refinery in 1981 at Point Limboh. Sonara's capacity of 43,000 barrels per day was small by most standards. In 1986, natural gas reserves, estimated at 100 billion cubic meters, were not produced commercially because there were no domestic users. Proposals for a multibillion-dollar liquefied natural gas plant at Kribi had been submitted; however, work on the plant had not commenced.

A mineral resource survey of the 940-square-mile (2,434 km2) Hells Canyon study area, which includes Hells Canyon Wilderness, Snake and Rapid Wild and Scenic River's, and adjoining roadless lands in Oregon and Idaho, indicates the area is highly mineralized. Thirty-four lode deposits within the study area have resources totaling about 31 million tons (28 million t) containing copper, silver, zinc, gold, and lead; another 42 lodes, not sufficiently exposed to allow resource estimates, are believed to have mineral potential. The most important deposits are copper-, silver-, zinc-, gold-, and lead-bearing volcanogenic occurrences, followed by silver-and copper-bearing contact replacement (tactite) deposits; other lode occurrences are relatively unimportant. The most important placer deposits occur at Dry Diggins; placers along the Snake River are small and scattered. The study area has extensive deposits of limestone and sand and gravel; it has little potential for energy resources.

This paper updates an earlier report by the authors that studied electrical injuries from 1992 to 1998. The previous information is expanded and supplemented with fatal and nonfatal injury rates and trends through 2002. Injury numbers and rates were used to compare and trend electrical injury experience for various groups and categories. This information allowed identification of at-risk groups that could most benefit from effective electrical safety interventions. The data presented in this paper are derived from the U.S. Labor Department’s Bureau of Labor Statistics’ Census of Fatal Occupational Injuries (CFOI), Survey of Occupational Illnesses and Injuries (SOII) and Current Population Survey (CPS). Between 1992 and 2002, 3,378 workers died from on-the-job electrical injuries. Electricity remained the sixth leading cause of injury-related occupational death. From 1999 through 2002, 4.7% of all occupational deaths were caused by electricity, down from 5.2% in the 1992 to 1998 time period. The cause of death was listed as electrocution in 99.1% of fatal cases. Contact with overhead power lines was involved in 42% of all on-the-job electrical deaths. The construction industry accounted for 47% of all electrical deaths between 1992 and 2002, but showed overall improvement from 1995 through 2002 by reducing its electrical fatality rate from 2.2 to 1.5 per 100,000 workers. An additional 46,598 workers were nonfatally injured by electricity. Contact with electric current of machine, tool, appliance, or light fixture and contact with wiring, transformers, or other electrical components accounted for 36% and 34% of nonfatal electrical injuries, respectively. Contact with underground, buried power lines was involved with 1% of fatal injuries and 2% of nonfatal injuries. NIOSH research aimed at evaluating commercially available overhead power line proximity warning alarms is described. This research is expected to be the initial step for eventual development of a performance standard for such systems.

Science Applications, Inc. has developed for the U.S. Bureau of Mines a rapid response radon monitor capable of accurately responding within three minutes to changing radon levels of magnitude from 100 to 10,000 pCi/1, typical of the levels in working uranium mines. The instrument weighs 17 pounds, is sized 12" x 10" x 6", and is capable of 8 hours of continuous portable operation with a self-contained, rechargeable battery power source. Residual chamber contamination from a radon level allowed to remain in the chamber for 90 minutes is about 10 percent, decaying about a factor of two in one hour. The instrument sensitivity is a nominal 0.1 cpm/(pCi/1), with a background count rate of less than 1 cpm.

The first Report of Investigations of the present series (No. 4562) was on the fundamental properties of lead compounds, and the manner in which they set limits to the richness of lead products treated in the usual sintering-blast furnace units. These properties of the compounds were emphasized, as' it was desired, also, to learn the limitations of smelting the same compounds in present ore hearth practice; the hearth has a competitor in these "usual" units, even with the rich lead feeds best adapted for the hearths. Operating conditions that were followed in older metallurgical processes, when rich products, were treated, were outlined. The second report of the series (R. I. 4563) was on the development of the ore hearths of the types now used in the Tri-State from the viewpoint of the features, functions, and dimensions of the earlier hearths that had been most changed. Experimental data, for both well and poorly desulfurized charges being considered, were given to show the relative changes in the sizes and compositions of the charges after they were added to the ore (Scotch) hearths. A general picture was given of the charge column and of the conditions prevailing there when the operation was satisfactory. In this third paper, the composition of the gases prevailing in the charge column at various elevations will be correlated with what has been learned of the nature of the charge column in order to trace the steps of operation by which lead sulfide is converted into metallic lead. The metallurgical factors that govern operation and the lines along which improvements may be made will be noted.

The coal wants at the Westland Mine in southwestern Pennsylvania consist chiefly of elongated, sandstone-filled channels with slickensided basal contacts. Tentatively identified as washouts, these channels are about 1,000 feet long and 300 feet wide, are erratic in occurrence and trend, and are difficult to delineate from the customary core drilling pattern. Roof conditions are hazardous adjacent to the washout contact, but roof stability is generally unaffected greater than 30 feet away.

This publication contains routine analyses and related source data for 475 natural gas samples from 17 States and two foreign countries. Of this total, 454 samples were collected during calendar year 1971. The remaining 21 samples were collected during previous years, but releases granting permission to publish the analyses were not received until 1971. All samples were collected as part of a continuous survey of the free world for occurrences of helium in natural gas. This survey has been conducted in the United States by the Bureau of Mines since 1917. In late 1965, the survey was expanded to include foreign gasfields. The analyses published herein were made by mass spectrometer and a special helium analysis apparatus, which are described in Bureau of Mines Bulletins 4863 and 576.4 Thirteen previous publications have presented the results of 9,427 gas analyses prior to 1971. Horizontal holes are drilled underground into coalbeds to control methane flow from ribs and active face areas and to make gas pressure measurements in coalbeds. Gas pressure measurements are made by drilling the same hole incrementally. After each increment, the hole is filled with some type of packers and allowed to reach equilibrium before a gas pressure reading is taken. As the length of hole increases, more packers are required to effect a seal and obtain a reliable pressure measurement. Problems have been encountered in obtaining satisfactory packer seals due to the friable nature of the coalbed. New methods of packing the holes must be used. Therefore, this project was established to evaluate materials and develop a new technique in which a semiliquid and/ or rigid type grout could be placed in the hole to provide satisfactory sealing.

The normal spectral emissivities of liquid Ti, V, Zr, Mo, and Pt were determined at the fusion temperatures in an electron-beam furnace using a water-cooled copper hearth. The normal spectral emissivities were estimated above the melting points by using adjusted two-color temperatures as approximations of the true temperatures for substitution in Wien's equation. Simultaneous brightness temperatures were determined with a micro-optical pyrometer. The true temperature ranges covered were 1,668° to 1,885° C for Ti; 1,919° to 2,013° C for V; 1,855° to 2,367° C for Zr; 2,610° to 2,751° C for Mo, and 1,772° to 1,990° C for Pt. The spectral emissivities for titanium and zirconium decreased with increasing temperature. At an effective wavelength (?) of 658 mµ the emissivity of titanium ranged from 0.51 to 0.45 and zirconium, from 0.47 to 0.41. The emissivities of vanadium (? = 658 mµ) and molybdenum (? = 657 mµ) were constant at 0.41±0.02 and 0.33±0.01, respectively. The spectral emissivity of platinum (? = 658 mµ) was constant at 0.39±0.02 up to 1,900° C; above that temperature anomalous data were obtained. A mass spectrometric study indicated that platinum was reacting with back-streaming silicon vapors from the diffusion pump when the ambient pressure was greater than 2 X 10-5 torr.

After emphasizing the importance of quantitative rock mass classifications in mining, originally directed to selection of rock support measures, but subsequently to estimates of rock mass properties such as rock mass strength and rock mass modulus of deformation, current attention calls for a classification specifically for rock mass excavability by tunnel boring machines (TBMs), which are used extensively in tunneling as well as in the mining industry. This paper introduces the Rock Mass Excavability (RME) index for predicting excavability of rock masses by TBMs using a quantification of machine performance and rock mass conditions. The RME index is based on five input parameters aimed at relating rock mass behavior and machine characteristics: (1) uniaxial compressive strength of the rock material, (2) drillability/abrasivity, (3) rock mass jointing at mine drift face, (4) standup time of the excavation, and (5) groundwater inflow. Development of the RME index entailed the collection of extensive data from more than 28 km of tunnels and some 400 case records from projects in Spain involving double-shield TBMs. In the process, a number of statistical correlations have been established between RME and such output parameters as degree of machine utilization, advance and penetration rates, thrust and torque of the cutterhead, and the specific energy of excavation. It was found that the RME index provides a particularly significant correlation for predicting the average rate of advance (m/day). In essence, the RME index is a classification system that features interaction of rock mass conditions with boring machine characteristics for use in the early stages of a project. It should be noted that the RME index does not replace the Rock Mass Rating (RMR) or Q-systems as used in mining and tunneling; indeed, one of the RME input parameters, standup time, is determined from the RMR. However, the approach presented introduces a specialized tool relevant to excavating tunnels and drifts. Possible applications to hard-rock mining are explored.

During U.S. Bureau of mines mineral investigations, in 1981 and 1983, no mines, prospects, or mineral resources were identified in the Little Sand Spring Wilderness Study Area (WSA). Placer gold values in near-surface samples from alluvial fans within or near the WSA contained no more than 66 cents gold per cu yd, at $400 per troy ounce gold price. Sand and gravel and carbonate rocks occur in large quantities, but transportation costs to distant markets preclude their classification as resources. Nitrogen, lithium, clay, pumice, perlite, aragonite, and agate occurrences in the WSA are small or low-grade. The Silvia Mine, adjacent to the WSA contains gold-, silver-, copper-, and lead-bearing shear zones which strike toward the WSA. INTRODUCTION The Little Sand Spring WSA, encompassing 33,500 acres, is approximately 56 mi east of Big Pine, California, by paved and graded dirt roads (fl;. 1). Elevations range from 2,600 ft in Death Valley Wash to 5,600 ft along the California-Nevada boundary. The nearest permanent facilities are at Grapevine Ranger station and Scotty's Castle (Death Valley Ranch), about 9 and 11 mi, respectively, south in Death Valley National Monument.

"The contemplated use of dichloro-difluoro methane in domestic and commercial refrigerating appliances and in air-conditioning equipment for Public buildings and possibly homes, brings attention to the health hazards involved in a wide potential exposure of the public to vapors of another new product, and for the first time to vapors of an organic fluorine compound. The objective in the development of this new refrigerant, however, has been the mitigation of health and explosion hazards in automatic refrigeration, and accordingly these factors have been given primary attention. Early in the development, the Bureau of Mines was requested to make a laboratory study of the toxicity and potential hazard:"" and it was on the basis of the results of this work and the results of a preliminary investigation made in another laboratory5 that the compound has been selected for commercial use. Although the investigation conducted by the Bureau of Mines is still in progress, information has been obtained to indicate the order of the toxicity and the magnitude of the health hazards involved in the use of dichloro-difluoro methane as a refrigerant. The following is a summarized report of the work completed to date:Additionally work rich is in progress at the present time includes a determination of the lethal time-concentration curve for animals and a study of the response of persons within the range of safe concentrations.The writers desire to jive acknowledgment to T E. The monthly summary of the climatological record for the demonstration mine is presented in Table 1. Tear normal temperatures occurred throughout the growing season. From May to October precipitation was more than normal except in June when it was 2.55 inches below normal. Corn and soybean plantings were delayed until June 2-7 because of wet field conditions. This is about one month later than normal for corn planting. Insect infestations were much less than those encountered in previous years. Cutworm activity was not noticed and alfalfa weevil infestation were small and patchy. Stalk rot in corn was a significant problem at harvest and resulted in much Milk lodging. The wet and generally overcast conditions of July, August and September were bend 10 beneficial al to certain plant disease organisms. For example, pumpkins planted in a small garden area at the demonstration mine did not ripen because of a powdery mildew resulting from overcast, wet conditions. Field operations and row crop plantings were greatly delayed by wet field conditions. It was difficult to plant by conventional tillage because the soil remained soft and sticky where the moldboard plow had been used. "INTRODUCTION During the period from September 18 to November 27, 1944, the Bureau of Mines conducted an investigation and exploratory churn-drilling program in an area immediately north of the Crow Branch Diggings, a district lying approximately 2 1/2 miles southwest of the town of Livingston in Grant County, Wisconsin.The work was undertaken as part of a general Bureau of Mines investigation of the zinc-producing area of southwestern Wisconsin at a time when all effort was being made to increase the production of metals important to the Nation's war prrgram.Although no mining has been done in the district in recent years the Crow Branch Diggings were an important source of galena and may be found today in the dumps remaining from old surface-mining operations.The Bureau of Mines undertook an exploratory churn-drilling program on the northwestern projection of the general strike of the digging in a zone where subsurface,lead and zinc mineralization had been reported from drilling done in the early 1900's."

Liquid oxygen explosives are ordinarily made from a carbonaceous absorbent and from liquid oxygen of high purity. These explosives have a limited but definite field of usefulness; their properties have been described in the literature, which includes several publications of the Bureau of Mines, the most recent dealing with fire-retardant treatments.3/ It seems generally conceded that the outstanding hazards in the use of these explosives are their high inflammability and their relative sensitivity to mechanical action. Each of these topics has been studied, and some interesting practical results have been obtained. Treatments have been described[7] that render liquid-oxygen explosives prepared from granular carbonaceous absorbents practically immune to the action of igniting agents representing or exceeding practical hazards in violence.

In underground mines, coal dust explosions are prevented by the addition of rock dust sufficient to render the coal dust inert. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has developed a hand-held instrument that uses optical reflectance to measure the explosibility of a rock dust and coal dust mixture. This instrument is called the Coal Dust Explosibility Meter (CDEM). In this study, NIOSH personnel accompanied Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) inspectors on their routine band surveys in five and three underground coal mines in MSHA District 2 (PA) and District 11 (AL), respectively. While underground, NIOSH personnel and MSHA inspectors used the CDEM to assess the explosibilities of the dust samples. The values of percent incombustible content (% IC) determined by the CDEM agreed well with those obtained later by low temperature ashing (LTA) in both MSHA and NIOSH laboratories. Further, the meter identified some samples as potentially explosible that LTA analysis had found to possess sufficient rock dust for inerting. The CDEM provides more information on the hazards in the mine. Rapid identification of areas with explosible dust mixtures using the CDEM allows for immediate intervention rather than a wait of several weeks for laboratory analysis.

Three-dimensional velocity tomograms were generated on a daily basis to image mining-induced changes to the overburden above a longwall mine. The hypothesis was that a coherent redistribution of seismic velocity, due to the development of high-stress zones, could be imaged at the mine scale. Seam depth was 360 m and source location depth varied from 100 to 1000 m. Sixteen geophones were distributed over a 600 by 600 m square area on the surface above the mine. More than 12,500 events were recorded over an 18 day period. The recorded seismicity provided input for the local-earthquake tomography code, SIMULPS. Eighteen tomograms were generated and high-velocity regions correlated well with high abutment stresses. Additionally, the high-velocity regions were observed to redistribute as the longwall face retreated. These results indicate that velocity tomography can be used to provide a better understanding of temporal changes within a rock mass, and can potentially be used to produce a better understanding of the mechanisms that lead to unanticipated ground failures.

The objective of this program was to develop a cost effective microprocessor-based electronic image sensor system for monitoring pit slope displacement to detect and/ or predict impending slope failure in surface mines. A background study and data analysis yielded a performance specification for candidate Video Slope Monitoring Systems. A design concept was developed based on using a pair of solid state video cameras located on precision pointing assemblies. The digital images from the cameras are compared and, using electronic triangulation, slope topology is calculated. The current and past locations of operator selected features are compared to determine pit slope displacement. A proof-of-concept test was performed using a laboratory model of a pit slope. Based on the successful results of that testing it is recommended that an in-mine evaluation be performed using a full-scale prototype Video Slope Monitoring System.

The manganiferous schists occurring in the vicinity of Kings Mountain, North and South Carolina, suggest significant tonnages of potential submarginal ores. Although some reconnaissance work in connection with these deposits has been reported, no recent information has been published. Evaluation of the schists as a possible domestic manganese resource has not always adequately considered the fact that the manganese content occurs quantitatively both as oxide and as the silicate, spessartite. The Bureau of Mines investigation herein reported includes preliminary studies to indicate the extent of manganese oxide mineralization and to deter-mine the amenability of the material to sulfur dioxide leaching. The field reconnaissance studies suggest a resource containing in one area an average of 6.4 percent manganese as oxide. The procurement of depth information was beyond the scope of the investigation.
