The determination and publication of data o the chemical and physical properties of American coals have been primary functions of the Bureau of Mines since its creation in 1910. In recent years this program has been expanded to meet increasing needs for information on the suitability of coals for the production of coke, gas, and byproducts, and within the last year an experimental coal-hydrogenation plant has been completed. With this addition, the Bureau is able to cover every phase of coal utilization, including combustion, carbonization, liquefaction, and complete gasification. The need for this information is increasing not only to meet the requirements of consumers but also to give the data required to establish the classification and minimum selling price of coal by the National Bituminous Coal Commission.

While the neurological and vascular aspects of Hand-Arm Vibration Syndrome (HAVS) has been generally accepted as a medical condition, the medical criteria and the clinical findings used to establish the diagnosis has been more difficult to bring to consensus. The criteria was first quantified by the Taylor-Palmear scale.1 This criteria was subsequently modified in 1986 at the 1st Stockholm Workshop2,3 to included more acceptance for the neurological effects that characterized the predominate findings in some workers. The relationship between hand-arm vibration and Carpal Tunnel Syndrome was defined in NIOSH 97-1414. While the aforementioned documents have defined the clinical entities associated with hand-arm vibration exposure, agreement on the clinical findings and test to confirm the diagnosis has be been more difficult to bring to consensus. Clinicians assessing HAVS has relied on a number of varied neurological and vascular tests. The neurological testing has focused on assessing damage to the sensory capability of the fingers for the neurological component including tests to measuring ability to sense vibration, cold or other end point finger sensor functions. However, the vascular testing has been traditionally focused on the ability to either measure vascular function or to reproduce the vascular blanching that occurs in HAVS with cold water provocation. Recent assessment of this testing in the United Kingdom Coal Miner’s study has questioned the value of this testing especially in reviews by McGeoch.5 In an attempt to provide some type of definitive testing to substantiate vascular damage from hand-arm vibration exposure, angiography is an alternative or adjunct to cold water provocation testing. The standards that have been established to predict the level, type and incidence of HAVS have been based on clinical studies and reports that have essentially been all male populations. However, the recent entry of women into more vibration intensive jobs has brought about the exposure of some women to high levels of vibration previously only previously experienced by men. However, there have been only few studies that look at HAVS in women6. Although exposed the same vibration levels, it has not been clear that the latency and type of pathology of HAVS in women will be the same as for men. The purpose of this study is to look at recent case studies of men and women exposed to jobs with high levels of hand-arm vibration with extensive clinical testing for both the neurological and vascular components of HAVS as well as other associated upper extremity conditions such as Carpal Tunnel Syndrome.

It is apparent that coal will play an increasingly important role in satisfying the nation's energy requirements for the remainder of this century. Both deep mining and surface mining will be practiced to develop known U.S. coal reserves, but until significant improvements in the productivity of deep mining emerge, surface mining is likely to be predominant. This report addresses the problems of coal extraction and surface mine reclamation in the 11-state Midwestern coal resource region, where surface stripping of high-sulfur, bituminous coal has been a well-developed industry for most of this century. Midwestern coal markets have declined in recent years. In part this is a result of widespread conversions to more convenient and (apparently) economical liquid and gaseous fuels, but the decline in Midwestern coal use is also attributable to the impact of current air pollution control regulations that prohibit emissions of sulfur oxides and particulate matter. A part of the regional demand for Midwestern coal has been transferred to the Northern Great Plains where extensive low-sulfur coal reserves are currently being developed.

The purpose of this Bureau of Mines study of U.S. roof and rib (roof- rib) accident statistics and related accident costs is to define current accident trends (1980-84) associated with fatal and nonfatal roof-rib fall accidents. Data were retrieved from a data base containing all recorded U.S. mining accidents, then sorted and normalized utilizing a computer software program. The statistics indicate that roof-rib accidents have significantly declined in the 5-yr study period. Moreover, they indicate that there have been increases and/or patterns of roof-rib accidents associated with specific mine characteristics, such as seam height, mine size, geographic location, and seasonal variations. Also, roof-rib injury characteristics produced pattern changes involving worker activity, lost workdays, types of injury, and severity of injury. A conservative estimate indicates that there has been a 30% adjusted increase in the cost of a roof-rib accident over the 5-yr study period.

In 2006, a total of 4,573 stone mining operations reported employment to the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA).1 Stone mines comprised 30.7% of all mining operations. ? Mines producing the primary commodity of limestone (crushed and broken) comprised the largest number of operations (n=2,042; 44.7%). ? Stone mining operations were located in all states and territories except Delaware and North Dakota. ? Pennsylvania had the most stone mines (n=368; 8.0%), followed by Texas (n=342; 7.5%).

Background. There is currently little information regarding factors associated with specific modes of motion segment failure using a fatigue failure model. Methods. Thirty-six human lumbar motion segments were fatigue tested using spinal compressive and shear loads that simulated lifting a 9 kg weight in three torso flexion angles (0°, 22.5°, and 45°). Twenty-five segments failed via fatigue prior to the 10,000 cycle maximum. These specimens were visually inspected and dissected so that the mode(s) of failure could be determined. Failure modes included endplate fractures (classified into nine varieties), vertebral body fractures, and/or zygapophysial joint disruption. Logistic regression analyses were performed to determine whether certain morphometric variables, amount of motion segment flexion, disk degeneration scores, and/or loading characteristics were associated with the occurrence of specific failure modes. Findings. Results indicated that stellate endplate fractures were associated with increased posterior shear forces (P < 0.05) and less degenerated discs (P < 0.01). Fractures running laterally across the endplate were associated with motion segments having larger volumes (P < 0.01). Endplate depression was more common in smaller specimens (P < 0.01), as well as those experiencing increased posterior shear force (P < 0.05). Zygapophysial joint damage was more likely to occur in a neutral posture (P < 0.01). Interpretation. These results suggest that prediction of failure modes (e.g., specific endplate fracture patterns) may be possible (at least for older specimens) given knowledge of the spinal loads along with certain characteristics of the lumbar spine. Intense vibration can be transmitted to the hands and arms of workers who use hand-held percussive or vibrating devices, tools, and work pieces. Continued habitual exposure to vibration directed to the hands can cause patterns of various symptoms associated with hand-arm vibration syndrome (HVAS). The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) first published ISO 5349 in 1986.3 This standard specified methods for measuring and evaluating vibration directed into the hands from hand-held vibrating devices, tools, and work pieces. The American National Standards Institute (ANSI) published ANSI S3.34 the same year.1 This standard was modeled after ISO 5349-1986 and specified methods for assessing exposure to hand-arm vibration. The Parliament of the European Union has issued the European Union Human Vibration Directive-2002/44/EC, which specifies vibration daily exposure action values (DEAV) of 2.5 m/s2 and daily exposure limit values (DELV) of 5.0 m/s2. These values have generally been accepted by medical experts, scientists, and engineers in governmental agencies, research institutions, and industry in the USA and other countries.2 When they are achieved, they will reduce the potential for the development of symptoms related to HAVS among workers exposed to hand-arm vibration. Significant improvements in measurement and analysis instrumentation, miniature and subminiature accelerometers, and medical diagnostic and assessment protocols have being introduced since 1986 when ANSI S3.34 was first published. In response to these improvements and the introduction of the EU Human Vibration Directive, ANSI Working Group S2.39 developed the revision to ANSI S3.34, which has now been published as ANSI S2.70-2006.2 Method ANSI S2.70 specifies the use of the hand-arm vibration measurement procedures outlined in ISO 5349, Parts 1 and 2.2,4,5 It requires the measurement of ISO frequency-weighted acceleration values in three mutually orthogonal axes of vibration. These values are then vectorially added to obtain the vibration total value, ahv: [ ] where ahwx, ahwy, and ahwz are the measured r.m.s. Before 1914 , Chile , because of her extensive resources of natural nitrates , practically monopolized the world markets for one of the leading fertilizer materials . Since nitrogen also is an important war material , constituting in fact the principal ingredient in many high-powered explosives , the World War and the widespread insistence upon national self- sufficiency for war materials brought about the development of nitrogen fixation plants in all of the larger countries . The production of by- product ammonia from gas and coke plants was likewise stimulated . As a result , Chile , even after the ocean lanes were reopened , was forced to fight for her lost markets . Since the world capacity to produce is still far in excess of annual consumption , the competition between natural and synthetic supplies has been keen and prices have fallen below pre-war levels . Chile has recently succeeded in unifying her industry , utilizing the most efficient process now in operation, and the Government is a partner in the new company that will take over all of the present producing companies . These developments place Chilean nitrate of soda , in a much more favorable position among the markets of the world . More intense competition will undoubtedly follow and , in order that those interested may become familiar with the fields upon which the nitrogen conflicts of the near future may be waged , the following general summary of the nitrogen industry has been prepared .

Data regarding the composition and physical properties of Florida land-pebble phosphate-waste slime are presented, and the feasibility of dewatering and beneficiating the slime by several different methods is discussed. Chemical analyses, electron micrographs, and X-ray diffraction data showed that principal constituents of the slime included quartz, attapulgite, and flaorapatite. Viscosity of the slime changed with pH; thixotropic, Newtonian, and rheopectic states were observed as the pH increased. Use of various flocculating agents was not effective in improving thickening properties of the slime. Dewatering tests using pressure filtration showed that temperature influenced the filtration rate more than pressure; the filtration rate at 165° C was tenfold that at room temperature. Selective flotation of the slime, using two different processes, gave promising results. About 25 pct of the phosphate was recovered in a concentrate assaying 31 pct P205, Other tests demonstrated that the slime could be successfully fractionated at 20-microns using a hydrocyclone. In hydrometallurgical tests about 80 pct of the phosphorus and alumina were chemically extracted from the slime using sulfuric acid. Limited bacteriological studies made of the slime showed that several types of microorganisms were present and grew in the material despite the presence of fluorine-bearing minerals.

"INTRODUCTION The idea of direct steel is by no means new. Although the work of Bessemer and Siemens provided simple and effective moans for converting pig iron into steel and established the ""blast-furnace route"" as the almost universal method of producing steel, metallurgists have not ceased to dream of direct steel. By direct steel is meant any process by which iron oxide in ore is reduced to Iron of the same or greater purity than the final steel or wrought iron. That is, carbon or alloying elements would be added as needed, not reduced in unwanted quantities into the iron and then removed more or completely by refining (Bessemer or open hearth) only to be readded in desired quantities.In general, direct-steel processes are ""sponge-iron"" processes, because reducing iron oxide without simultaneously alloying the iron with carbon, phcophorus, sulfur, and silicon present in ore and fuel succeeds only if the temperature is below the melting point of the iron. Such solid iron formed by reduction of iron oxide at relatively low temperature is sponge iron, which is butlery and porous. When the reduction proceeds at the higher temperature at which the particles of metal can weld together or finally even melt to yield pellets or balls that do not have the porosity and low-density characteristic of sponge iron, the product might preferably be called simply ""direct iron."""

This is the final report on a research program to develop a pilot plant gasifier for slagging gasification of lignite at high pressures and to obtain process data under various operating conditions. An operable pilot plant was developed, and the test results show that lignite is well suited for the process. Tests were run at pressures from 80 to 400 psig, and the results indicated that pressure had little effect on gas composition or the material requirements per unit gas produced. Gas production rates as high as 26,000 scfh/sq ft of reactor area were obtained at 300 psig, but limitations on auxiliary equipment prevented full-capacity operation at 400 prig. In several tests lignite having a 37-percent moisture content and 2,500° F ash-fusion temperature was successfully gasified. Refractory materials were found to have a short life in contact with high-temperature slag, and a water-cooled taphole was developed. Exploratory tests with coking coal were unsuccessful.

The Bureau of Mines investigated the resource potential of 201 mines and deposits in 28 market economy countries and 17 mines and deposits in the U.S.S.R. and China. The 201 mines and deposits evaluated from market economy countries contain an estimated 34.2 billion metric tons of recoverable phosphate rock (at the demonstrated resource level), with Morocco and Western Sahara accounting for 61% (21 billion tons), followed by the United States with 19% (6.4 billion tons). The 17 mines and deposits evaluated in the U.S.S.R. and China contain approximately 1.5 billion tons of potentially recoverable phosphate rock. Potential annual capacity from low-cost, high-grade producing mines in the United States is estimated to decline significantly during the latter half of the next decade, and the United States will have to develop new, higher cost, lower grade mines in order to satisfy demand into the next century. Of the world&apos;s new production capacity which could likely be developed over the next decade, slightly over one-third could be produced at an estimated 1981 cost of $40 per ton or less, and about two-thirds would cost in the $40 to $50 range (including a 15% rate of return). In comparison, moot of the competing phosphate rock from producing mines in Morocco could be produced for under $40 per ton. The United States has sufficient demonstrated resources of phosphate rock (plus huge quantities at the identified and hypothetical resource levels) to satisfy domestic consumption for many years to come, but its future ability to compete in the major export markets against low-cost competitors is much more uncertain.

A 20L ignition test chamber has been used to test suspensions of 7 UK and world traded coals in air and O2/CO2 mixtures typical of oxy-combustion conditions. The coals varied in rank from sub-bituminous to bituminous and were tested in varying concentrations from the ignition limit to 400g/m3. Following each successful test the combustion residue was collected, weighed and analysed within a thermogravimetric analyser, allowing Q factors to be estimated. The ignition limit varied slightly in air, but was mostly around the 200g/m3 level. With the exception of Coal C, which was much harder to ignite, it correlated roughly with coal rank. The ignition limit changed significantly with O2 concentration when in mixed O2/CO2 gases. Only a few high volatile coals ignited in 21% O2/CO2 v/v, and then only with a 2500 J, rather than a 1000J, igniter. An increase in O2/CO2 levels to 30 or 35% gave ignition patterns similar to those carried out in air with a further increase to 40% having little additional effect. In addition the minimum ignition concentration decreased with increase in O2. Heterogeneous combustion or gasification of the coal by CO2 appears to be confirmed by comparing weight loss results for air and O2/CO2 mixtures respectively for an equivalent peak pressure rise.

This Information Circular , one of a series published by the Bureau of Mines , reports on the methods and costs of mining and concentrating zinclead ore at the Highland Surprise mine in the Pine Creek area of the Coeur d'Alene region of Idaho . The mine is owned and operated by the Highland Surprise Consolidated Mining Co. , which supervises operations of the Nevada Stewart group of claims , which is adjacent on the northwest . These properties are at the extreme eastern end of a zone of fracturing that strikes northwest across the Pine Creek area . In fractures along this zone are the principal Pine Creek mines ; these are the Highland Surprise , Nevada Stewart , Sidney , Denver , V and Idaho , Liberal King , and Northern Light . Country rock at the Highland Surprise is argillite of the Prichard formation (Belt series ) . Fracturing has permitted the movement of mineral- izing agents that have replaced adjacent walls and crushed country rock with sulfides . Ore minerals are sphalerite and galena with accessory pyrite , chalcopyrite , pyrrhotite , and siderite . Three principal ore shoots were found on the Highland Surprise property . The Highland ore shoot was mined from outcrop to the 400 level . The Surprise ore body has been developed to a depth of 1,400 feet on the dip of the vein . The outcrop of the Surprise ore shoot was 150 feet long and 2 to 4 feet thick ; on the 1,150 ( lowest ) level , the ore shoot is 320 feet long and 10 to 17 feet thick , with good zinc content . Surprise ore shoot No. 2 occurs 250 feet west of No. 1 and has been mined from the 500 to the 1,000 level . From 353,000 tons of ore mined between 1910 and 1948 , the property has a recorded production of 256,000 ounces of silver , 7,500 tons of lead , 24,000 tons of zinc , and 412 tons of copper . Both shrinkage and cut and fill stoping methods are used at the Highland Surprise , but shrinkage is unsuitable for mining below the 700 level , because faulting has weakened the walls . Development of the Surprise ore , as well as exploration laterally and along the strike , is prosecuted steadily . A prospect heading is being pushed westward toward Nevada Stewart ground from the 700 level . The mill has a rated capacity of 275 tons per day and operates near capacity . Selective flotation makes zinc concentrate that is shipped to the Anaconda smelter and lead concentrate that is trucked to the Bunker Hill smelter at Kellogg .

This Bureau of Mines report is a reference manual of procedures used by the Bureau&apos;s Twin Cities Mining Research Center for obtaining rock properties. Included in the report are discussions on the usage of each property, descriptions of the general test methods for obtaining the properties, and instructions for performing the tests. The Instructions embrace details of the specimen configuration, test apparatus, test procedure, test conditions, and calculations needed to achieve satisfactory results. Although the procedures presented in this reference manual generally conform to recommendations of the ASTM Administrative Committee on Standards, they are not purported to be standards.

This Bureau of Mines report describes field investigations conducted in the Coeur d&apos;Alene mining district of Idaho to obtain data on rock stress and physical properties. The resulting information has been utilized as input to detailed finite-element analyses to establish structural design criteria for deep-vein mine shafts. Measurement techniques include the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research biaxial and triaxial strain cells, the U.S. Geological Survey solid-inclusion probe, and the Colorado School of Mines dilatometer. Physical property testing was conducted in the laboratory on core obtained from each test site. Limited in situ physical property tests were also conducted. Reason-able success was obtained with the CSIR equipment, which was considered the most suitable for stress measurement in the study area. Test sites ranged in depth from 1,200 to 7,700 feet and are described in detail. The stress data were reduced by least-squares linear regression techniques to enable prediction of vertical and horizontal stresses to 7,500 feet. Ratios between the horizontal stresses as utilized for shaft design varied considerably, and a hydrostatic condition is the exception, based on Bureau measurements. Physical properties also varied widely, due to the complex geologic structure. Analyses of the data in terms of the tectonic history of the area show reasonable correlation. Data from previous rock mechanics investigations from the Coeur d&apos;Alene district were also compiled and presented as part of this report to justify any generalizations regarding stress conditions and physical properties of the district as a whole.

The principal activities of the Bureau of Mines Explosives Research Center (now Safety Research Center) during fiscal year 1968 (July 1, 1967, to June 30, 1968) are reviewed in part 1. Part 2 presents short abstracts of the publications issued during this period in the Bureau series and in other media. Part 3 describes a short study on the thermal decomposition of RDX and HMX not destined for publication elsewhere. A larger measure of safety attended the operation of the stone quarries and related plants in the United States during the calendar year 1935 than in any other year for which annual records are available for the industry. The accident rate, covering fatalities and nonfatal injuries that disabled an employee beyond the remainder of the day on which the accident occurred, was 38.19 per million man-hours of work performed. The nearest approach to this favorable record was in 1932 when the rate was 38.48. The rate for 1934 was 41.82; hence the record for 1935 was 9 percent better than that for 1934. Reports from operating companies showed that 51 men were killed by accidents in 1935 and 4,152 men were injured. (See table 37.) The industry employed 73,005 men and performed 110,033,341 man-hours of labor, an average of 1,507 hours of work per man. Measured in man-days, the total volume of labor was 14,623,303, or an average of 200 days of 7.52 hours per day for each man employed. These figures are not strictly comparable with similar figures for the preceding year, as the, coverage of the industry was more complete for 1935 than for 1934 because special facilities were available to the Bureau of Mines for conducting the 1935 canvass that were not available for the 1934 canvass. Reports covering identical plants that were active both in 1934 and 1935 indicate a reduction of about 7 percent in the number of men employed in 1935. This fact suggests that the apparent increase in the number of workers in 1935 is attributable chiefly, if not entirely, to the more complete coverage of operating plants in 1935. The plants from which this inference is drawn employed 21,799 men in 1934 compared with 20,248 in 1935.
