A bench-scale method for recovering lead and zinc from slimes and mill tailings from the Tri-State District of Missouri, Oklahoma, and Kansas was developed by the Bureau of Mines. Dilute hydrochloric acid, containing sodium chloride, and chlorine gas were used to decompose the mineral constituents. Lead was electrolyzed from the pregnant acid solution, and zinc was precipitated from the depleted electrolyte by neutralization with lime. Up to 98 percent of the lead was recovered in an impure lead electro- deposit assaying approximately 85 percent lead. Zinc recoveries up to 90 percent of the total were attained in a precipitate assaying approximately 40 percent zinc.

Reducibility tests were run by the Bureau of Mines on an open hearth lump ore and four groups of pellets whose smelting characteristics had been deter-mined previously in the Bureau's experimental blast furnace. When reduction data from various tests were plotted on specially prepared paper l-(l-percent reduction/100)1/3 against time, the plots were linear. The iron-wustite inter-face therefore advances at a constant rate. The rate of the interface advance in mm/min was used as a reducibility index. The reducibility index measured at 900° C, using 0.45 cu ft hydrogen per minute varied inversely with the surface area of the sample. Even with carefully controlled surface areas, how-ever, duplicate reducibility indices varied considerably. When enough tests were run to give a stable mean, the mean reducibility index did correlate with blast furnace production for the four pellet groups. Results indicated that if the interface speed itself were to be used for correlation with blast furnace production, a sample size of about 180 grams of minus 0.742-plus 0.525-inch particles should be used with a test temperature of 900° C and a flow of 0.45 cu ft hydrogen per minute.

The chemistry of selenium and tellurium is discussed , along with a method of preparing a synthetic oilfield brine , an oilfield brine sampling method , and methods for determining selenium and tellurium in complex oilfield brines . Selenium either can be reduced to the elemental form with sulfur dioxide and determined semiquantitatively by color comparison of the red amorphous form or can be converted to selenite and determined quantitatively by reacting it with 3,3 ' - diaminobenzidine and obtaining its spectral absorbance at 420 mu . Tellurium can be reduced to the elemental form with hypophosphorous acid , and the spectral absorbance of its red hydrosol can be measured at 400 mu . Less than 0.05 mg / 1 of selenium and 0.1 mg / 1 of tellurium can be determined by the described methods .

Ethical concerns of in-vivo procedures and poor repeatability of non-invasive techniques have been major limitations in estimating vibration-induced spine loads through experiments. The biodynamic models of seated human body exposed to whole-body vibration (WBV) have evolved for defining the frequency-weightings, enhancement of human responses to WBV, and developing anthropodynamic manikins for seating assessment activities. The widely reported mechanical-equivalent models, solely based on through- or to-the-body biodynamic response functions, do not seem to resemble the biomechanical structure and do not yield information on the dynamic loading and deflections of segments of concern, namely the spine. On the other hand, biomechanical models with representative anatomical structure and anthropometry are being attempted to simulate segmental movements and the coupling effects, using Finite elements (FE) or multi-body dynamics (MBD) formalisms, which could provide important insights into the inter-vertebral forces [1]. While the FE models pose considerable complexities primarily related to characteristics of the bio-material properties, the MBD technique with discrete rigid bodies offers the flexibility to create multi-segment models with relative ease and lower computational cost. In this study, a preliminary multibody dynamic model of a seated human body exposed to WBV along the vertical direction is formulated using MSC/ADAMS software. The model validity is demonstrated by comparing selected responses with the available measured data. Methods The seated human is represented by nine rigid body segments, including: head, neck, thoracic and lumbar torso, pelvis, hands and thighs, as shown in Fig. 1. The rigid bodies are coupled through different rotational and translational joints, some of which are force elements to allow vertical translations and sagittal–plane rotations of the segments. The measurements of transmission of vertical vibration through-the-body generally require subjects to voluntarily maintain a vertical head position to reduce head-accelerometer orientation errors. The head–neck–shoulder joint is thus considered to be rigid. The shoulders are assumed to be rigidly attached to the thoracic segment. The torso is made up of three (upper, middle and lower) segments connected by visco-elastic revolute and translational joints to permit relative pitch and vertical motions. The forces and torques generated by the joints are derived assuming linear stiffness and damping properties, which were identified from published studies. The pelvis is connected to the rigid seat by similar elements representing the visco-elastic properties of the buttock tissues. The two thighs are rigidly connected to the pelvis, while the segment masses are chosen from the anthropometric data for the 50th percentile male subject. On May 15, 1936, Congress authorized the Bureau of Mines to conduct certain studies, experiments, and investigations of subbituminous coal and lignite .4/ Appropriations were made in July 1937, and since that date an active investigation has been underway to complete the provisions of the act. Part of the investigation has included a comprehensive survey of the known properties of the lower-rank non-coking coals, and provisions were made to obtain more data on certain varieties. In line with this plan, a typically subbituminous coal was selected for an extended series o tests in the standard Bureau of Mines-American Gas Association unit,5/ at the Central Experiment Station. This particular noncaking coal was the first one of its rank that ha& been tested in the apparatus; for this reason the results are of particular interest because the testing apparatus was originally designed for use in studying the coke- and gas-making properties of coking coals. The test as described below has been developed by the Bureau of Mines since 1927 through a cooperative agreement with the American Gas Association.6/ Ninety to 180 pounds of coal is heated in a circular retort, 13 to 18 inches in diameter, at wall. temperatures ranging from 540°C. to 1,110°C. in 100°C. steps. All products axe collected and measured; their physical and chemical properties axe then carefully determined to ascertain the gas- and coke-making properties of the coal.

This paper presents current finding on truck driver average exposure to acceleration for several different manufacturer’s cab-over trucks on a variety of roads in different countries. The predominant time, for this aspect of the study has been spent in the area around London, England and Warsaw, Poland. The ECE directive 2002/44/EC has provided specific guidelines for vehicle operators 8 hour average acceleration exposure. The primary considerations have been on truck design including the air-ride driver’s seat. The truck manufacturers have produced truck cabs that have some separate suspension from the truck frame. The truck seat manufacturers have been producing air-ride suspension seats for the cab. Both of these designs have had the objective of meeting the ECE directive and providing the vehicle drivers with some degrees of comfort. This paper will provide some information on the ability of the vehicles to operate on a variety of roads and meet the objectives. Method The primary method for evaluation of the driver’s exposure has been the use of a seat pad attached to the driver’s seat. Although this sensor system provides the critical information for the driver, an understanding of the reasons for the values requires additional measurements. The initial study in England used both driver and passenger seat pads, as shown in Figure 1, as well as triaxial accelerometers mounted on the base of the seat. The latest studies used significantly more transducers to better understand the relative rotations and translations on the truck frame, the cab, and the driver. [ ]

The purpose of this Bureau of Mines investigation was to measure the amplitude and shape of the strain pulse and the size of the crushed zone produced in a granite by different explosives and to determine how these quantities are related to the detonation properties of the explosives. The reflection theory of rock breakage has shown that the amplitude and shape of the strain pulse incident at a free surface determine the fragmentation and volume of rock broken. Determination of the properties of an explosive that control the characteristics of the strain pulse produced in the rock will help in evaluating explosives for use in blasting. The investigation showed the different explosives produced a twofold variation in the amplitude of the strain pulse but little variation in the shape of the pulse. The explosives also produced a twofold variation in the volume of the crushed zone, but differences among the explosives were more accurately determined by strain-amplitude measurements than by crushed-zone measurements. The peak amplitude of the strain pulse and the volume of the crushed zone correlated with the calculated detonation pressure of the explosive.

This report describes methods and techniques employed by The Glidden Co. of Cleveland, Ohio, in explorating an ilmenite-bearing sand deposit in Ocean County, New Jersey, during 1960 to determine ore reserve potential and the feasibility of mining and establishing a milling plant on the property for the production of ilmenite concentrate. The property covered approximately 1,250 acres. Comprehensive sampling by water-jet drilling indicated the deposit averaged 20 feet in thickness and contained 4.5 percent heavy minerals, of which 80 to 85 percent was ilmenite and leucoxene. Average depth of the water table as determined by auger boring was 16.8 feet. Pilot plant tests indicated that circular concentrators in combination with spiral concentrators would recover at least 80 percent of the heavy mineral content of the sands. It was estimated that sufficient ore reserve tonnage had been developed to supply the company's Baltimore chemicals division, pigments department, with a suitable grade ilmenite concentrate for a period of 20 years at the present rate of pigments production. The property was designated as Lakehurst mine and plans are in progress for mining development and plant construction.

The national mine-safety demonstration at Pittsburgh, Pa., was projected and undertaken in the hope that it would aid the increase of safety in the mining industry. That the national mine-safety demonstration was warranted and has served a useful purpose was evidenced by the attendance, not only at the public demonstration in Forbes Field, but also at the more special exhibit of the work of the Bureau of Mines at the arsenal grounds and at the experimsntal. mine. Nearly 2,000 persons witnessed the demonstrations and exhibits of the Bureau of Mines at the arsenal grounds on the morning of October 30, 1911. The spectators were all mine operators, miners, or persons interested in mining, and represented operations in all parts of the United States. Nearly 1,200 of these persons visited the bureau's experimental mine at Bruceton to witness ~th~explosion of coal dust. Had the weather, which was exceptionally inclement, been more favorable, there would doubtless have been a much larger attendance. At the public demonstration in Forbes Field, which· was witnessed by President Taft, from 12,000 to 15,000 persons, chiefly mining men, were present and attested their interest and enthusiasm in the minesafety exhibits by remaining throughout the proceedings, regardless of the rain which fell all the morning .. Sincethis demonstration, the organization of first-aid corps and of rescue corps has been undertaken at mines where there had previously been no such organizations. The bureau has received letters of commendation attesting the value of the demonstration in drawing· attention to the dangers and to possible means of greater safety in mining. Many of these letters have urged that the results of the demonstration be published for the guidance and instruction of those who were present. In response to these reauests the following account of the mine- BlIIeLY demonstration lias been prepared. IIi its preparation various division and section chiefs of the Bureau of Mines have cooperated. The authors acknowledge the assistance they have received from those section chiefs and other members of the bureau who contributed detailed descriptions of apparatus exhibited at the demonstration or of investigations represented.

Recent experiments used catalysts of plate assemblies in synthesizing high-Btu gas and gasoline indirectly from coal. A gas with a heating value of 925 to 943 Bt-: per cubic foot has been prod u la the hot-gas-recycle pilot plant from synthesis gas (3H2+100) with lathe turnings used as catalyst in the first reactor, and assemblies of parallel sprayed plats of nickel in the second. Solid plates made of Raney nickel, and steel and aluminum plates sprayed with Raney nickel or nickel oxide were tested. Those catalysts had very low resistance to gas flow; 90 percent lower than nickel granules used in previous experiments. In a single stage of synthesis thee nickel plates were only partially successful. Although the heating values of the product gas ranged from 856 to 941 Btu per cubic foot, the carbon monoxide content of he gas was above 0.1 percent. Both steel and wrought turnings were tested in single-stage synthesis, but the conversion of hydrogen and carbon monoxide was too low to attain the desired heating value of 900 Btu per cubic foot in the product gas. Assemblies of plates thermally sprayed with fusel iron were tried in an experiment to make gasoline. A gasoline yield of 52 percent (of the hydro¬carbons produced) was obtained using a 1H2-10O feed These sprayed assemblies were in service for 1,500 hours, the longest that this type of catalyst has been used. When a second reactor containing Raney nickel catalyst was added in series with the first reactor, complete utilization of the feed gas was obtained because in addition to the liquid product, a high-Btu gas with a heating value of 800 Btu per cubic foot was made.

The performance of electrical grounding systems in open-pit metal mines is evaluated, using techniques which are described thoroughly. The normal electrical distribution and grounding practices used in metallic open-pit mines are reviewed and compared with coal mine usage. The results are used to generate the included recommendations for Federal Regulations concerning open-pit metal mine grounding systems.

This report describes the elemental characterization of chromite and related materials at the Bureau of Mines, Albany Research Center. Analytical methods for determining the major constituents, representing extensive experience, refinement, and development, are described and fully annotated. This presentation should allow other laboratories to use these methods and obtain comparable results with a minimum of time needed for familiarization with individual methods.

"Occurrences of fluorite on the Packard property were first examined by an engineer3/ of the Bureau of Mines in July 1943 as the result of receipt of an application for an access road. In August of the same year the showings were examined by a geologist4/ of the Federal Geological Survey. The property was again examined by an engineer5/ of the Bureau of Mines in March 1944. This last examination resulted in a proposal that access be gained by construction of a truck trail and that the Bureau of Mines undertake to explore the fluorite showings.The truck trail was constructed by the Public Roads Administration, which began the work on February 17, 1945, and completed it 8 days later.The Bureau of Mines exploratory program was completed on May 16, 1945. It consisted of stripping overburden, trenching, test pitting, tunneling, sampling, and topographic mapping.In addition to being described in some detail, the extent of the work as well as results are shown in accompanying tables and figures.Mrs. Rhoda A. Packard, Mrs. Nora 1. Cline, and C. B. Pettingill, all of Tonto Basin, Ariz., own the property, which comprises four contiguous, unpatented lode mining claims recorded at Globe, Ariz., as the Walnut and the Bluebird 2, 3, and 4. The claims are situated in T. 6 N., R. 11 E., Gila County. David L. Roscoe of Tombstone, Ariz., holds a lease and option to purchase.Access to the property is by Highway 88 from Globe, 34 miles to Roosevelt, thence 24 miles by a graded county road along the west side of Roosevelt Lake to Tonto Basin. Here the Greenback Ranch road, constructed by the Forest Service and maintained by the county, crosses Tonto Creek and continues easterly to the foothills. The truck trail leaves the road 8.5 miles east of Tonto Basin and runs 2.5 miles in a southerly direction to the property. (Fig. 1.)The fluorite deposits lie in and along a small canyon in a rough, rocky area at an altitude of about 3,400 feet, Vegetation is scant and of the usual desert variety. The summer climate is dry and hot and the winter climate moderate. Rainfall at the Forest Service Station in Tonto Basin was 11.4 inches from May 1944 through March 1945."

Electric furnace smelting of blister copper directly from copper precipitates (cement copper) was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Mines. Copper concentrations in five different lots of cement copper in the investigation ranged from 62.5 to 82.5 wt-pct. Laboratory-scale smelting tests were made in a 50-kva electric-arc furnace to establish the reductant and flux requirements. Best recoveries were realized by adding 60 pct of the carbon required to combine with the contained oxygen in the cement copper. Operating parameters established during the laboratory-scale smelting tests were used successfully in smelting 20 tons of cement copper during 12 pilot-scale tests in an 800-kva electric-arc furnace. Over 98 pct of the contained copper was recovered as blister-grade metal. The projected energy consumption for a commercial-size furnace was 380 kwhr per ton of cold charge.

Since 1922 when the Bureau of Mines issued a report2 covering the slate industry in detail, changes in technology have taken place which have an important bearing on the industry. The present paper comprises a record of these changes. Though the value of slate, for roofing, structural, blackboard, sanitary, and electrical uses is generally recognized, it has many competitors. To meet this constantly increasing competition producers are promoting economies in manufacture, and improving processes, thereby lessening costs of production, and are placing on the market products of the highest possible quality, thus creating satisfaction and confidence on the part of the user. This endeavor to place the industry on a better basis, both as regards processes and products, is shown in the recent developments in technology which are presented herein. This computer program determines the price per ton of coal needed to obtain a profit of 12 percent discounted cash flow. From a predetermined equipment and manning list, the program calculates all costs and prints seven tables, Including the equipment and manning tables and the discount cash flow table. Forty-four of the input variables may be readily changed to study their effects upon the final price per ton of coal or upon individual cost items. The method is adaptable for any type of mining and with additions, for beneficiation processes. This program was written in Fortran IV for use on the IBM 11302 and with few modifications can be used on other computers.

This report presents a U.S. Bureau of Mines methodology developed to incorporate factors of coal production (mining and cleaning methods, recoveries, economics, etc.) into the definition of recover-ability of a coal resource. Project procedures and computer models that were developed to include mine and preparation plant production rates, recoveries, and costs are explained. The results of these procedures and models are reviewed and compared to the Energy Information Administration estimate of U.S. coal resources-the "demonstrated reserve base." The Matewan 7-1/2-minute quadrangle in eastern Kentucky was selected to demonstrate the methodology.

"INTRODUCTION As virtually no published data are available on the sintering of fine, minus-100-mesh, ferrograde manganese ores, it is most opportune to present data on the amenability of various fine ores and mill products to the sintering process. These data cover the sintering or nodulizing of finely crushed, high-grade pyrolusite and rhodochrosite ores, sintering of manganese carbonate flotation concentrate, sintering or nodulizing the calcine from the deleading of a manganese oxide flotation concentrate, and sintering the calcines made in a Herreshoff furnace from the treatment of manganese sulfate products.If finely sized products are to be smelted in the present electric or blast ferromanganese furnaces, they must be sintered or nodulized. The only specification as to the size of the sintered or nodulized product is that it must pass a 6-inch screen and not contain over 1t-1/2 percent minus 20-mesh material. The minimum-maximum size has not been established. Undoubtedly this opti mum size will be set by the ferromanganese industry when ample quantities of manganese oxide sinters have been smelted."
