An underground medium frequency radio communications system has been developed and demonstrated in both coal and metal/non metal mines. The principal advantage of the system are its low cost, ease of installation and the ability to provide radio communications to any vehicle or roving miner in the underground mine. The system provides high quality radio coverage in work areas and along manways with existing "wireplant" conductors. The conductors include AC power cable, telephone cable, metal water and high pressure air pipes, etc. The measured communications range from the base station to mobile transceiver exceeded 12,500 ft without the use of repeaters. A cost/benefit analysis shows that the initial cost of the equipment can be returned 2-6 times in the first year. The mine productivity increases by approx. 13 percent.

An abandoned mine shaft near Omar, in Logan County, W, was permanently sealed through a cooperative agreement between the West Virginia Department of Commerce, Labor, and Environmental Resources, Division of Environmental Protection, and the US. Bureau of Mines (USBM), Abandoned Mine Lands (AML) Program. An engineered shaft seal design was developed and demonstrated that featured lightweight concrete as a key material component at a wet density of about 45 lb/ft3. A reinforced concrete cap designed for 5 psi live load was placed over the shaft seal. Applicable new concrete technologies relating to a 100-yr design life were utilized to assure future integrity of the shaft seal. Waterproofing methods were included in the shaft seal design to provide protection from ambient moisture and corrosive mine waters and to increase the long-term durability of the shaft seal. All construction methods used in the field trial are fully adaptable for the mine-reclamation contractor, The USBM research objectives were to develop a broad generic design that will be widely applicable to other adit-sealing and shaft-sealing problems throughout the mining industry.

"The art of treating ores by the chloride volatilization process is still in the experimental stage. The process has not been sufficiently developed along chemical and metallurgical lines to state definitely just what place it will occupy in the metallurgical industry. The theory upon which the process operates has received the attention of prominent metallurgists for the past twenty years, and research and experimental work has been conducted by many investigators.Much of the experimental work done has never been published, and it seems that the accumulation of such results if made known would be an important aid to the further development of the process. The object of this paper is, therefore, to bring salient features of the process to the attention of the metallurgical industry, both for the purpose of furnishing information, and receiving from interested parties any comments which the reading of this article may suggest. A bulletin covering the work done at the Intermountain experiment station of the U. S. Bureau of Mines, situated at Salt Lake City, Utah, is in course of preparation.The chloridizing roast is usually accompanied by appreciable losses due, to the volatilization of the metals as chlorides during the roast, these losses often running as high as 30 per cent, depending upon the temperature, the character of the ores and the associated gangue material. It was not until 1891 that Croasdale, (Croasdale, Stuart, Engineering and Mining Journal, Aug. 29 1903) by observing this and stack deposits from the chloridizing roast, recognized the possibility of making volatilization a major instead of a minor feature of the roast. He then made tests on a large number of tires from different, localities, the result of which showed the, general application of the process. The main difficulty, as stated, by Croasdale, was the lack of a suitable means for recovering the fume from the furnace gasesIn 1913, Cottrell (See Mining and Scientific Press, March 29, 1913; alsoTrans. Titanium forms several compounds with oxygen and also is able to dissolve interstitially about 33 atomic percent of oxygen. Starting with titanium dioxide, reduction becomes increasingly difficult as oxygen is removed; and the final step, be reduction of the titanium-oxygen interstitial solutions, is by far the most difficult. The possibility of reducing titanium oxide, or of purifying titanium containing oxygen, by treatment with certain more volatile metals has been a subject of considerable interest. Theoretical appraisal of the limitations of this possibility, however, has been hampered by lack of adequate information on the thermodynamic properties of the titanium-oxygen solutions. The purpose of the present work was to remedy this difficulty by expanding the thermodynamic knowledge regarding these solutions. The experimental work involved three types of calorimetry and furnished the following information: (1) Heats of formation of 11 titanium-oxygen solutions, in the range of 0 to 10 wt.-percent oxygen, were determined at 298.15° K. As a byproduct, an improved value of the heat of formation of rutile was obtained, which, in turn, led to improved values of the heats of formation of the lower titanium-oxygen compounds. (2) Low-temperature heat-capacity data and entropies at 298.15°K in were determined for 2 representative titanium-oxygen interstitial solutions. (3) High-temperature heat-content data were obtained for 2 titanium-oxygen interstitial solutions to about 1,600° K.

The Coeur d'Alene Mining District of northern Idaho is remarkable for its number of large ore bodies and for the amount of its historical production of lead, zinc and silver (Fig. 1). Since veins were first discovered in 1884, more than 127 Mt (140 million st) of ore have been produced from narrow, high-grade veins. Mining continues at the Lucky Friday, Galena and Sunshine mines (Fig. 2). All have been in production for decades. At these mines, more efficient mining and exploration techniques have reduced costs while adding significant new reserves. Even the old Bunker Hill Mine, where ore was first found in 1875, continues operation on a limited basis, partly involving production of world-class pyromorphite specimens. Until recently, the Coeur Mine was also a profitable silver producer. Other large producers have included the Star-Morning, Hecla, Page, Standard-Mammoth, Hercules and Gold Hunter mines (Fig. 2). The first deposits were discovered by prospectors who spilled over from the Murray gold mining district, 24 km (15 miles) to the north. The Bunker Hill Mine was founded the year after the first veins were discovered. Bunker Hill has now operated for more than 100 years. Production includes 2.3 Mt (2.6 million st) of lead, 1.1 Mt (1.2 million st) of zinc and 4.1 kt (132 million oz) of silver. Total district production through 1996 (Springer, 1997) amounted to 7.3 Mt (8.1 million st) of lead, 3 Mt (3.3 million st) of zinc, and 34.5 kt (1.109 billion oz) of silver. This record establishes the district as the largest recorded producer of silver in the world, while also yielding major quantities of lead and zinc. Only Potosi, Bolivia, may have produced more silver, although records are unclear. Despite the district's longevity, historic production and current activity, the published literature on the district lags behind with regard to recent concepts of district geology. The most recent comprehensive US Geological Survey (USGS) bulletins (Hobbs et al., 1965; Fryklund, 1964) are dated. Much research in the last half century has been short-lived or geographically restricted because the district is large and its geology is complex - and even this research tends to remain unpublished. Research performed on computer modeling of mine power systems under USBM Grant G0155003 1S described. The work was performed at the Pennsylvania State University from 5 November 1975 through 4 November 1976. Results presented are interim in nature, and future research is planned to integrate the simulations which have been developed. The thrust of this research has been divided into three main areas. 1. Modification of a previously developed model (Mine Power System Simulation or MPSS) to include interactive operation and the use of default (average) load data. 2. Development of a dynamic simulation of interdependent mine power system induction motors. 3. Development of an approach to modeling of motor shaft loading of induction machines for mining operations. During the course of the current year's research, significant results have been achieved in all areas. Construction of an interactive MPSS model has been completed and checked. This simulation was written in APL code and is fully interactive. In addition, default data representing 158 different pieces of mining equipment has been developed for use with the interactive model. Additional work described includes the construction of a dynamic simulation of interdependent continuous miner induction motors and the development of an approach fo: motor shaft load torque computation from experimental data.

Ten proposed processes for the recovery of manganese from domestic resources as a high-grade oxide product are described. Nine of the processes employ sulfur dioxide, sulfuric acid, or a combination of both for leaching. The tenth process utilizes sulfur dioxide to sulfatize the ore at 600° to 850°C before water leaching. In addiction to these ten complete processes, six processes from the patent literature are described. Methods for receovering MnSO4?H2O are also reviewed.

A mass spectral scheme of analysis was devised which can be used to identify individually a single compound from a larger group of similar compounds. Mass spectra for 32 alkyl aryl sulfides are provided for future reference work, and analytical correlations used in producing the analytical scheme are discussed. Some of the correlations show that base peaks are either the same mass as the parent peaks or may be derived from cleavage alpha to the sulfur atom with migration of one hydrogen to the sulfur atom. Other spectral consistencies provide means of separating ortho-, meta-, and paratolyl arrangements in an overall analytical scheme. Determinations of chain lengths and separation of isomeric species are also discussed.

This paper is the result of a comparative study of ultimate coal analyses made and published by the United States Geological Survey. This study, at first casually undertaken to devise an acceptable classification of coals based on chemical analyses, was continued in connection with a microscopic examination of a number of the coals. The initial comparisons, made from a relatively small number of analyses, not only confirmed a previous conviction that the elimination of oxygen incident to the development of a coal is economically far more important than has been generally suspected, but also showed that oxygen is very nearly as harmful as ash in coal. The immediate purposes of the present study were: (a) To determine more definitely, from a comparative examination of a large number of ultimate analyses, the relative importance of oxygen as an impurity in various coals; (b) to illustrate the transition between various grades of coal of similar origin-transition mainly due to progressive devolatilization, brought about more or less directly by dynamic influences; (c) to ascertain the relative proportions of oxygen, hydrogen, and carbon in coking coals, especially with reference to a theory tentatively framed to explain the coking quality; and (d) to forecast the probabilities of successfully treating a large number of coals so as to render them amenable, in a softened condition, to satisfactory study under the microscope.

The Bureau of Mines and U.S. Geological Survey completed a 4-yr (1979-82) mineral appraisal of the Chugach National Forest (CNF), AK. This report summarizes the Bureau's placer gold studies in the CNF. Placer mining from the mid-1890's through 1982 produced an estimated 133,800 oz of gold, of which two-thirds was produced prior to 1920. As much as 6,800 oz of placer gold was produced from 1979 to 1982. Most production came from Crow, Canyon, and Resurrection Creeks. Five types of placer gold deposits were identified in the CNF: (1) alluvial placers, (2) bench placers, (3) eluvial placers, (4) glacial placers, and (5) marine placers. Placer sampling indicated a potential for gold production from alluvial and bench placers associated with historically mined drainages such as Crow, Canyon, Resurrection, Sixmile, and Mills Creeks and from unmined drainages including the Avery, Kings, Snow, Copper, and Tasnuna Rivers and several smaller streams throughout the CNF. Results of fineness tests indicated that gold from the CNF ranges from 455 to over 950 fine. Subsequent investigations in drainages with anomalous placer sample values also identified previously unknown lode mineralization.

This regional report covers 1993 mining and related activity in approximately 40 countries and territories of Canada, Latin America, and the Caribbean Basin. These countries of the Western Hemisphere, as with the United States, are endowed with a great variety of minerals, including metals, industrial minerals, and energy minerals. For most of these countries, such mineral production helps form foundations for their economies and earns export credits including hard currencies. Table 1 depicts an overall view of Latin America and Canada's production of its major mineral commodities in 1993; subsequent tables show the role of Latin America and Canada in world mineral production, trade, and import dependency on minerals from Latin America and Canada by the United States. Overall, the picture emerges of a rich mineral diversity throughout the hemisphere, attracting increasing interest and investment, and complementing the mineral resources of the United States.

The Bureau of Mines investigated the Rip Van Winkle mine, which is about 25 miles northwest of Elko, Nev., from October 1942 to February 1943 to determine possible resources of lead-zinc-silver ore. The property is owned by the Rip Van Winkle Consolidated Mining Co., which maintains its offices in Salt Lake City, Utah. Ore was discovered in the 1860's, and active mining was carried out intermittently until 1939, when the Rip Van Winkle Consolidate Mining Co. acquired the property. This company equipped and developed the mine, erected a flotation mill, and operated on a 65-ton daily basis. The ore is mined from veins, mineralized faults, and replacement deposits of wall rock. The country rock comprises cherty shale, granite, porphyry, intrusive breccia, and breccia, and brecciated shale. Mining operations were carried down to the 700-foot level. The Bureau of Mines drilled 5 diamond-drill holes, totaling 1,084 feet, from the 600- and 700-foot levels, excavated a 250-foot surface trench, and took 26 underground samples. The ensuing sections note the location and physical features of the district, mention the equipment, and specify the property and ownership. The history of the mine is briefed, and the geology, mine workings, and plant are described. The work performed by the Bureau of Mines is summarized and supplemented in detail by assay maps, logs of diamond-drill holes in appendix A, and by tables of sample analysis in appendix B.

The Federal Bureau of Mines has studied the locations and general features of 90 pegmatites found in north-central New Mexico. The dominant valuable product of the pegmatites is muscovite, both sheet and scrap. However, the Harding pegmatite in Taos County is mined only for beryl. Many attempts have been made to recover scrap mica on a large scale by mechanical beneficiation of pegmatite, but the operations heretofore have been short-lived. The Globe mine and the Apache mine, both near Petaca in Rio Arriba County, have been the most important sources of sheet mica in New Mexico. Recognition of the growing need for some of the minerals derived from pegmatites led the Bureau of Mines to investigate the occurrences of pegmatite.

This experiment, one of a series on underground gasification of coal, was an investigation by the Federal Bureau of Mines of hydraulic fracturing as a means of increasing the air acceptance of a coalbed to permit introducing combustion air and removing product gases. Specific objectives of the investigation included: (1) Fracturing a coalbed; (2) determining the distance the coal was physically affected; (3) ascertaining the effect of the fracture on air acceptance of the coalbed; and (4) gasifying the coal. The coal was fractured with a fluid consisting of 15,000 lb. of sand mixed with 10,000 gal. of fuel oil and 5,000 gal. of kerosine, injected at pressures up to 900 p.s.i.g. and rates up to 425 g.p.m. The oil served as the fracturing medium, and the sand as a propping agent to hold the fracture open. From the fracture point, (the place in the bed where the fluid was injected), the fracture extended 200 ft. or more along the face cleats, somewhat less along the butt. cleats, and was confined to the coalbed. At the fracture point, the bed accepted about 500 std. c.f.m. of air, which was an etghtyfold increase. Fracture effects were extensive, as airflow was noted from old mine workings and outcrops 600 to 800 ft. from the fracture point. It is probable the actual fracture was much less than 600 ft. and that normal coalbed permeability beyond the fracture limits was responsible for this flow. This indicated that effects of the fracture extended beyond the area of coal physically affected. Although no attempt was made to gasify coal more than 200 ft. away, these effects plus the natural permeability of the bed likely would permit combustion beyond the outer limit of the fracture. As these experiments continued for more than 2 years, and greater air acceptance due to the fracture was observed at the beginning of each test, it is apparent that the effects of the fracturing persist for a considerable time.

The first metal-mine accident-prevention course was prepared and published in 1942-45 as a series of seven miners' circulars (Nos. 51-57). The scope of the course has been broadened, revised, and brought up to date, and it is being published as a similar series of seven miners' circulars on accident prevention in metal and nonmetallic mines. These circulars are: 1. Accident Statistics (Miners' Circular 51), dealing with general statistics on accidents and injuries at metal and nonmetallic mines, including causes, costs, and the uses of investigations and reports of all accidents.

The Bureau of Mines conducted research to develop preliminary engineering data necessary if the cobalt-rich manganese crusts that occur in the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) of the Hawaiian Archipelago are to be mined. The research was divided into the following sections: (1) physical, mineralogical, and chemical descriptions; (2) mechanical property testing, such as compressive strength, tensile strength, and a rippability index; and (3) mechanical cutting characteristics, including average and peak cutter forces, the specific energy, and cuttings size distribution. Section 1 utilized microscope, X-ray powder diffractometer, and electron microprobe analyses. Section 2 utilized standard mechanical property testing techniques. Section 3 utilized a converted planer mill with full-size coal cutters to fragment the crust and substrate samples. The manganese crust samples were mainly manganese and iron oxides and hydroxides with an average cobalt content of 1 pct and had a nucleus or substrate of rock or sediment. The significant results shown by the mechanical property and cutting tests are that the crust and all but two types of substrates (basalt and trachyte) are weak materials and easily cut with standard drag cutters. The crusts are generally comparable to medium hard coal in strength and in their resistance to cutting.

"INTRODUCTION This investigation was undertaken in 1939 for the purpose of securing the necessary information relating to the field techniques and accuracy that would be needed for magnetically surveying State-wide areas. The Florida,peninsula was chosen for such a study for two reasons: First, because it is geologically ideal for such an investigation, since it comprises a series of unconsolidated, flat-lying Tertiary and Cretaceous sediments of low magnetic susceptibility covering a complex and much-folded crystalline basement comprised of rocks carrying strongly -paramagnetic materials; second, because information concerning the structural trends of the crystalline basement would be of great interest and Importance in the study of Appalachian orogeny and the relationship of the Florida Peninsula to both the Appalachian and Antilleantectonte systems. The results of this magnetic survey have clearly demonstrated that the magnetic anomalies reflect variations in the crystalline a basement. To the degree which the structures of the crystalline basement control the structures of the overlying sediments these results are useful for oil exploration.MAGNETIC OBSERVATIONSAll magnetic measurements were made with a vertical Aekania magnetic variometer having a temperature compensated needle. All observations were tied into two base stations located at Fort. Myers and Gaineeville, Fla. The absolute vertical magnetic intensities at these two bass stations were determined by the United States Coast and Geodetic Survey within an accuracy of + 10 gammas. The accuracy of the base station variometer used in the present survey was of the order of ± 3 gammas. The sensitivity throughout the survey of the magnetic variemoter used on the traverses approximated 30 gammas per scale division and it is estimated that the probable error between stations along a traverse would be about + 5 gammas. Measurements were started on traverse C near Fort Myers and tied into the Fort Myers base station established by the Coast and Geodetic Survey. Twelve traverses, comprising 1,500 station observations, wore occupied between the Fort Myers and Gainsville base stations. When the cumulative total of these 1,500 interim observations was tied into the Gainesville base station it was found to differ by only 30 gammas from the value obtained by the Coast and Geodetic Survey for that base. The observations were adjusted for this difference."
