The Bureau of Mines conducted research to develop preliminary engineering data necessary if the cobalt-rich manganese crusts that occur in the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) of the Hawaiian Archipelago are to be mined. The research was divided into the following sections: (1) physical, mineralogical, and chemical descriptions; (2) mechanical property testing, such as compressive strength, tensile strength, and a rippability index; and (3) mechanical cutting characteristics, including average and peak cutter forces, the specific energy, and cuttings size distribution. Section 1 utilized microscope, X-ray powder diffractometer, and electron microprobe analyses. Section 2 utilized standard mechanical property testing techniques. Section 3 utilized a converted planer mill with full-size coal cutters to fragment the crust and substrate samples. The manganese crust samples were mainly manganese and iron oxides and hydroxides with an average cobalt content of 1 pct and had a nucleus or substrate of rock or sediment. The significant results shown by the mechanical property and cutting tests are that the crust and all but two types of substrates (basalt and trachyte) are weak materials and easily cut with standard drag cutters. The crusts are generally comparable to medium hard coal in strength and in their resistance to cutting.

The Bureau of Mines determined total sulfur and sulfur forms for coal in 283 counties in 29 States and 2 fields of the State of Alaska. Specifically, organic, pyritic, and sulfate sulfur were measured of approximately 2,900 samples, and they include most of the coalbeds in the United States.

Reference mass spectra and analytical correlations for 20 alkylcycloalkyl sulfides and two dicycloalkyl sulfides are presented 'to provide information that will facilitate the identification of sulfur compounds occurring in natural or synthetic mixtures. Reference spectra indicate relative intensities in addition to parent and base peak sensitivities. Analytical correlations establish the ionic species that reflect major fragmentation paths for the com-pounds studied. Specifically, the correlations show that base peaks are formed by several different processes: (1) Cleavage of the bond a to the ring, (2) fragmentation of the alkyl chain, and (3) fragmentation of the ring plus fragment contribution from the alkyl chain. Useful correlations for deter-mining alkyl chain length involve the CnH2+3S+ and CnH2n+1 + ions. CnH2n-2+ and CnH2n-1 S+ ions reveal the number of carbon atoms in the cyclic ring. [The Mining and Metallurgical Divisions of the Bureau of Mines, Region V, conducted an investigation in 1950-51 of the iron sulfide deposits in Aitkin and Carlton Counties, Minn. Twelve diamond-core-drill holes, aggregating 2,347 feet, were drilled in secs. 14 and 15, T. 46 N., R. 25 W., Aitkin County, to increase reserves of iron sulfides known to exist 2 miles southwest in secs. 28 and 29, T. 46 N., R. 25 W. Three diamond-core-drill hobs, totaling 561 feet, were drilled in Canton County, sec. 7, T. 46 N., R. 2 0 W., to check reports of the presence of a large sulfide deposit in that area. Mineral-dressing tests were made on cores from 10 holes drilled in Aitkin County. These included core from hole 21 drilled in sec. 28 and submitted by the Glen Development Co.]

"PURPOSE OF INVESTIGATIONOf more than 300 bituminous mines examined by Crichton 5 and his assistants in connection with litigation in Indian Creek Valley, Payette County, Pa., only four were found to have alkaline water. That work and many observations from of the authors have shown the general prevalence or acid drainage from bituminous coal mines. In connection with investigations pertinent to coal-mine drainage that are being conducted by the United States Bureau of Mines, it was noted with considerable interest therefore, that a mine in the Thick Freeport bed about 20 miles north of Pittsburgh had no acid water in the workings, As it was thought that this condition might be common to all mines,this condition in this bed most of them were visited, samples of the outflow and from different parts of the mine inside were examined, and such general information as was available was gathered.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSThe authors acknowledge with thanks the courteous assistance of mine officials in connection with collecting the data for this paper, and of the analytical and coal laboratories of the Bureau of Mines for analyses."

Large-scale methane releases in dual salt mines have resulted in ignitions and mine fatalities as recently as 1979. Several past studies have implied that hazardous methane occurrences in U.S. salt domes are distributed neither uniformly nor randomly, but are geologically controlled and potentially predictable. A first step by the Bureau of Mines in addressing the problem of methane in deal salt mines required development of a new test to determine volumes of gases in solid salt samples. This report considers the results achieved when 80 deal salt samples were tested for gas content by dissolution in a controlled atmosphere chamber. Criteria were organized to delineate salt types based on geological occurrence. Outburst samples range from 0.014 to 7.4 cm3 CH4/100 g NaCl, anomalous salt samples from 0.0027 to 2.6 cm3 CH4/100 g NaCl, and normal salts from less than 0.0003 to 0.31 cm3 CH4/100 g NaCl. The presence of higher hydrocarbons was most common in samples containing larger quan¬tities of methane. The presence of higher hydrocarbons appears to be useful in detecting methane hazards where some methane may be lost before gas content testing. An exploratory rotary and/or core drilling program, dissolution testing for gas content, and up-to-date geologic mine napping could allow a mine operator to assess methane hazards in dual salt.

With the surrender of the Japanese Imperial Government as a climax to the capitulation of the German High Command , the main objective of the Petroleum and Natural Gas Division pivoted from war assignments to its main normal functions . One of these functions is to give wide public distribution to valuable technical facts which the Division has obtained through research on petroleum , natural gas , helium , and related subjects . During the war years many engineering data and scientific facts could be released only on a restricted basis as reports to war agencies and others immediately concerned . Moreover , many of the wartime reports contained masses of detailed data that were prepared under stress to meet emergency schedules . For peacetime publication and application , these data must be reviewed , correlated , and rearranged so as to present the essentials in proper form . To illustrate , a wartime report of 50 pages might be resolved into one curve in a composite graph for a peacetime publication . Another factor affecting the orientation of the work of the Division is the broader horizon of research revealed by its war activities . Fundamental research and careful engineering analyses are just as important in time of peace as in time of war; in fact , they should be more important to the forward view , because under peace conditions disrupting influences that distract from the orderly acquisition of knowledge are minimized . Therefore , the concerted effort has been not to " salvage " the results of the war activities , but to evaluate them on the basis of their relative importance in the future economy of the country . Where wartime investigations have pointed to peacetime accomplishments , the effort has been to give the corresponding type of work additional emphasis . This adjustment can not be made hurriedly , but many of the necessary preliminary steps on the new course have been taken ..

"INTRODUCTION In the spring of 1942 a series of magnetometer surveys on deposits of black sand underlying Pleistocene raised marine terraces along the coast of southwestern Oregon was nada by the Division of Geophysical Exploration of the Federal Bureau of Mines in cooperation with the Oregon Department of Geology and Mineral Industries. A few preliminary tests had been made in the same area in May 1940 and December 1941.The sands contain fine gold and metals of the platinum group, and, beginning in 1852, extensive, but spasmodic mining and exploration have been done for these precious metals. There are many old placer, mines and prospects, although for the most part the yield of the metals has been small. The sands also contain other minerals of potential value, including ilmenite, magnetite, garnet, zircon, and particularly chromite, and the wartime demand for domestic chromite resulted in extensive testing and development of the known deposits. The purpose of the magnetometer surveys was to determine the efficacy of, magnetic methods in tracing and outlining these known deposits and in prospecting for new ones. The field work was done between March 17 and May 29, 1942, by the author assisted by W.W. Paulsen of the Oregon Department of Geology and Mineral Industries."

To develop a method for predicting the stability of a fuel during long-term storage from rapid aging tests at 200° F, the Bureau of Mines determined the stabilities of three gasoline base stocks and an alkylate blending stock in both sealed storage and aerated storage at 110° F for periods extending to 32 weeks. Stabilities of samples containing gasoline-additive compounds were compared by aging, using two methods--rapid aging in a bomb at 200° F for intervals up to 16 hours and storage at 110° F. The additives used were an uninhibited tetraethyllead motor mix, N,N'-di-sec-buty1-p-phenylenediamine and 2,6-di-tert-butyl-4-methylpheno1. Results were related by graphs that enable predictions of gum and sediment formation during storage from data obtained in bomb tests. A premium-gasoline base stock and the alkylate proved to be stable, but the two regular-grade gasoline base stocks were found to be unstable. Addition of the diamine antioxidant improved the stability of both of the regular gasoline base stocks, while the phenol antioxidant improved only one of them. The presence of the tetraethyllead decreased the storage stability of all four fuels, both with respect to formation of gum and precipitation of inorganic sediment. The rapid test at 200° F appears to offer promise as a basis for a method of predicting gasoline stability in long-term 110° F storage.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the current literature on the use of calcium chloride and ligninsulfonates as dust suppressants with respect to potential adverse effects on health or the environment. Calcium chloride poses little internal hazard to man and animals, but toxicity to vegetation in and around the area of application should be expected. The effects, however, should be considerably less than those observed from using calcium chloride as a road deicer. Except for trout, ligninsulfonates seem to pose little direct systemic toxicity problems in aquatic organisms, animals and man or any problem with local vegetation. Because of a greater volume of information on its use and effects, calcium chloride is recommended over ligninsulfonates.

The primary objective of this study is to "evaluate the influences of different equipment systems on prime farmland subsoil compaction due to surface mining in the Midwest." The study is centered on four mine sites each utilizing a different combination of equipment for soil removal and replacement. Subsoil compaction is the primary focus of this research effort. Primarily owing to physical location, it is difficult to alleviate the increased compaction directly below the topsoil in reclaimed soils. Different equipment combinations cause varied effects when soils are replaced during surface mining activities. By collecting field data within a statistical framework, the effects of different equipment combinations on subsoil compaction can be evaluated and conclusions drawn. This research effort evaluates a comparison of natural and replaced soils by moist bulk density data. This comparison centers on changes in bulk density and texture to a depth of 48 inches. For each study site a complete case study is provided for use in data correlation and interpretation. Basis for this research effort centers on four (4) major experiment designs: o Comparison of soil bulk density values for three distinct equipment systems evaluated on the same general soil types (i.e. scrapers, bucket-wheel excavators and end-dump haulback); o Evaluation of the effects of soil replacement in repeated lifts using scrapers; o Presentation of bulk density values representing soil compaction for four (4) equipment systems (i.e. bucket-wheel excavators, draglines, scrapers and end-dump haul back) on four separate mine sites in the midwest; o A prediction analysis model is developed for subsoil bulk density following reclamation based on equipment characteristics and a statistical evaluation of texture. The soil data base of information includes data from the 1982 Bureau of Mines study entitled, "Impact of Surface Mining on Soil Compaction in the Midwest" as well as data from this research project. The final report is synthesized through an analysis of field data, statistical analysis and literature review. The final report focuses on the interpretation of results for practical application by government and industry.

During the past 15 years the number of reportable mine fires has declined. A decline in the number of reportable fires is a gross indicator that allows experts to say something about the underground coal industry generally: There has been some improvement in overall mine fire preparedness. However, such an indicator is less reliable as a predictor of readiness at any particular operation. An indication of fire fighting preparedness would have to be assessed from evidence gathered at the mine site. In other words, there are two levels from which to view the problem. On a general level, there has been significant improvement in the industry's fire response capabilities over the past two decades. Specifically, however, little data has been gathered on a site-by-site basis to determine what improvements might be made on a local level. These improvements would move beyond regulatory compliance. It is expected that this manuscript, based on work conducted at an underground coal mine in the western United States, will help to focus attention on some central concerns involving this critical issue.

Epoxy and polyester-type resins were injected into coal-mine roof strata of the thick Freeport coal seam in Allegheny County, Pa., at test sites in roof that had been exposed several weeks, in newly exposed roof, and in strata over solid coal. Test results indicate that the method of strengthening bituminous-coal-mine roof by injecting a bonding material into the roof strata can be developed into a safe, efficient support system. If roof bonding will become a standardized method of roof support and reinforcement or if it can be effective when used with other types of roof support can be determined only by extensive experimentation in various coal beds. Observations and conclusions are shown at the end of this report.

As part of a general plan for control and economic utilization of the waters of the Missouri River Basin as well as development of its inherent power resources, the Corps of Engineers of the United States Army has under construction a rolled earth dam near the site of old Fort Randall in South Dakota. The dam is in Charles Mix and Gregory Counties on the Missouri River at a point about 922 miles above its mouth. It is approximately 125 air-line miles southeast of Pierre and 55 miles southwest of Mitchell, S. Dak. The storage reservoir to be formed by the dam will extend upstream for 150 miles and, at maximum operating pool level, will cover an area of some 107,000 acres. It will have a storage capacity of 6.2 million acre feat.

The results of designing, constructing, installing and operating a ventilation monitoring system throughout an entire commercial coal mine is presented. Measured parameters were airflow, methane, carbon monoxide, temperature, relative humidity and differential pressure. A central computer provided for automatic system operation. Preliminary tests of two remotely controlled ventilation regulators were performed in conjunction with the monitoring system.

This report contains the Phase I findings of a study to select and test devices for preventing lack of alertness in haulage truck drivers. The extent of the problem was determined by visiting surface metal and nonmetal mines, interviewing drivers and safety personnel and reviewing accident reports. A number of devices for detecting a lack of alertness were considered and three were recommended for testing in actual operation.

Occupational exposures to whole-body vibration (WBV) at different frequency domains may differentially affect human comfort and the musculoskeletal system. Under this presumption, a frequency-based weighting scheme has been adapted in many widely accepted standards for WBV measurement. However, there is very little human data showing a direct link between WBV frequency and musculoskeletal disorders. We conducted an epidemiologic study to examine the association between WBV frequency and prevalence of low back pain (LBP) and to identify determinants of specific frequencies associated with LBP in urban taxi drivers. Methods The WBV frequency data were collected from 247 professional drivers (aged 44.6±8.3) who participated in an exposure validation study 1 of the Taxi Drivers’ Health Study (TDHS) in 2000. 2 In accordance with the ISO 2631-1 (1997) methods, we measured the frequency-weighted acceleration over drivers’ seat surface, under conditions representing randomly assigned destinations. We developed a WBV record-replay system at the Liberty Mutual Research Institute (LMRI) in Hopkinton, MA, USA. This system includes two tri-axial accelerometers (PCB Piezotronics, NY, USA), one RD-130T PCM data recorder (TEAC, Tokyo, Japan), and one LMWBV meter 2.0 (LMRI, MA, USA). Only the vertical axis of seat-surface WBV frequency was used in this study. To characterize the WBV frequency curve, we manually identified the presence of any peak within each of the following frequency range: <4, 4-10, 10-20, and >20 Hz. Information about the operating vehicles and driving environment was either collected from the vehicle registration record (manufacturer, year of make, transmission, engine size, etc.) or directly measured (wheel-base length, seat inclination, etc.). Structured interviews were conducted by an occupational physician to gather information on LBP that had led to medical attention or absence from driving in past year. We used multiple logistic regression to estimate the prevalence odds ratio (OR) associated with the presence of each index peak frequency, adjusting for age, body mass index, professional seniority, daily driving hours, seat inclination, and the intensity of predicted root-mean-square WBV exposure in m/sec2. For any revealed WBV frequency that was associated with LBP, we constructed a multiple logistic regression model to identify the personal and vehicle characteristics associated with the presence of WBV peak within the indicated frequency range.

This publication is one of a series prepared by the Federal Bureau of Mines on methods and costs of producing uranium ore on the Colorado Plateau. The information it contains was gathered in 1955-58 and applies to eight small operations. (See fig. 1.) Mining costs have increased since the data were I collected, but the information should be helpful in estimating future costs I at similar deposits. The Bureau of Mines had early experience in the production of carnotite-type ores on the Colorado Plateau.3 4/ Under a cooperative agreement with the National Radium Institute in 1914-16, the Bureau mined and concentrated carnotite ore for recovery of radium, uranium, and vanadium. The ore was taken from claims in or near Long Park Montrose County, Colo., about 3 mi. south of La Salle Mining Co.&apos;s La Salle mine, which is one of the mines described in this report. The Bureau leased the claims from Crucible Steel Mining & Milling Co., a subsidiary of Crucible Steel Co. of America, and from 1914 to 1916 produced 990 tons of high-grade ore, containing 2.6 pct. U308, and about 2,000 tons of mill-grade ore, containing 0.85 pct. U308. The high-grade ore was shipped directly to a radium-recovery plant built in Denver in 1914 under the cooperative agreement. There, commercial methods of extracting uranium, vanadium, and radium from carnotite ores were developed by Bureau personnel. The lower grade ore was concentrated at a small mill in Long Park before being shipped to Denver. The final recovery was 69,000 lb. of U308 and 8.8 g. of radium. The direct mining cost of producing the high-grade ore, including the labor to hand sort and sack it, was $35.96 per ton. Freighting the ore 58 miles to Placerville, Colo., the nearest rail point on the Rio Grande Southern Railway, cost $25.28 per ton, which included $4.55 per ton for ore bags and twine. This report summarizes the Bureau of Mines noise-control research program from 1972 to 1982. Each segment of the mining industry--under- ground coal, underground hardrock, surface mining, and processing plants--has different noise-control problems because of vast differences in working procedures, equipment, and workplace design. The Bureau has identified the most serious noise problems in each segment and has developed strategies for attacking these problems. This publication points out the need for noise control in the mining industry, discusses Federal regulations governing worker exposure to noise, and describes the Bureau&apos;s overall approach to mining noise- control research. It traces the history of noise overexposure in each segment of the mining industry and discusses the major noise sources. It provides detailed information on noise-control research efforts in the Bureau&apos;s major areas of emphasis, including the results of these efforts. Finally, the report discusses the Bureau&apos;s future role in research on mining noise control, emphasizing the need to expend more effort on long term in-house investigations into the noise problems that have been identified in past programs as the most serious ones.
