The Bureau of Mines conducted laboratory and field experiments to determine tne amount of permeability reduction in uranium sandstone after its exposure to different drilling fluids. Seven polymer and two bentonite fluids were laboratory-tested in their clean condition, and six polymer fluids were tested with simulated drill cuttings added. Sandstone cores cut from samples collected at an open pit uranium mine were the test medium. The clean fluid that resulted in the least permeability reduction was an hydroxyethyl cellulose polymer fluid. The greatest permeability reduction of the clean polymers came from a shale-inhibiting synthetic polymer. Six polymer fluids were tested with simu-lated drill cuttings added to represent field use. The least permeability reduction was obtained from a multipolymer blend fluid. A field experiment was performed to compare how two polymer fluids affect formation permeability when used for drilling in situ uranium leaching wells. For this test, the polymer fluid with the best laboratory results (multipolymer blend) was compared with a commonly used polymer fluid (guar gum) that gave poorer laboratory results. When fluid injection rates for the four wells drilled with the guar gum were compared with those for the four drilled with the multipolymer blend, no statistically significant difference was found.

The Bureau of Mines studied the presplitting technique used for controlling overbreakage in the walls of a vertical shaft at the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Littleville Dam project near Huntington, Mass. The periphery of the shaft, the dimensions of which were 16-1/2 feet wide by 21 feet long and 52 feet deep, was presplit (cracked) in the solid to a depth of 48 feet prior to full-depth sinking. Presplitting prevented overbreak in a fairly soft schist and provided sound self-supporting walls which required very little scaling.

This report documents a preliminary hydrologic investigation of an area where longwall mining methods are to be used. The scope of work includes: determination of physical and chemical characteristics of major soil types in the area; determination of physical and chemical properties of surface water bodies; collection of geologic characteristics, including stratigraphy, structure, and detailed aquifer descriptions; collection of 10 years' meteorological data and installation of a weather station; and a detailed ground-water investigation that includes completion of observation wells, aquifer testing, water quality sampling, and analysis using a 3-D computer model. The Trescott model developed by USGS was used to simulate steady-state aquifer conditions. Input data from 8 multiple-completion monitor wells were used to model an area of approximately 10 square miles. Two layers, coal and overburden, were simulated, both confined. Model results showed good agreement with know piezometric data, desaturated areas, and flow from springs. The study area was found to have very low-yield bedrock aquifers with transmissivities ranging from 5 to 320 ft2/day for the coal (depths from 500 to 1,200 ft) and from 499 to 576 ft2/day and fractured sandstone units (depths less than 100 ft). Annual precipitation and recharge are very low, 10 to 11 inches and 0.25 inch respectively. The area has very high relief and large areas of rock outcrop. No perennial streams are present on the site.

The Bureau of Mines sought to correlate the variation of structure-sensitive superconducting properties with microstructure in selected Cb-Hf alloys and to compare the experimental results with those predicted by the GLAG theory. Alloys in wire and rod form were evaluated by critical temperature, critical current, magnetization, resistivity measurements, and optical and electron microscopy. In the absence of an external magnetic field, the current carrying capacity of columbium was greatly reduced with addition of up to 85 wt pct Hf, but a large increase in Ic occurred for Cb-90 wt pct Hf. Favorable Ic-H behavior was observed in cold-drawn alloys containing 25 and 57 wt pct Hf. Correspondingly, a maximum in Tc occurred at 10-25 and 90 wt pct Hf. Four- or five-hour heat treatment at 600° C resulted in maximum Ic values and maximum hysteresis in magnetization. Dislocation pileup, polygonization, and fine precipitates, responsible for flux pinning, are listed in order of their effectiveness as pinning sites. Sites having an average separation of 1,500 to 3,000 A and a diameter of 1,000 A or less were most effective in influencing Ic-H and M-H behavior. The resistive critical fields increased smoothly to a maximum of 80 k0e between 60 and 65 wt pct Hf. Highfield, mixed state, reversible paramagnetism was observed in some alloys; however, the GLAG theory was in good agreement with experimental results for the majority of the composition range studied.

The purpose of the study is to investigate the effects of fracture fillings and associated alteration on the mechanical behavior of rocks. Experimental results are presented for 98 specimens from the Climax mine, which were tested since the annual report (May 1973). The conclusions reached are based on both these results and those reported in the annual report. The locations studied are the Climax and Henderson mines in Colorado and the San Manuel mine in Arizona. The rock types studied from each location are from: 1) Climax, medium-grained granite, fine-grained granite, granite porphyry, schist, and gneiss; 2) Henderson, rhyolite porphyry; 3) San Manuel, quartz monzonite and quartz monzonite porphyry. A description of the rocks was made including: color, texture, mineralogy, composition and fabric of fracture fillings, density, apparent porosity, and optical diffraction patterns. Unconfined and triaxial compression tests were run on the Climax and San Manuel specimens. Sonic velocities were measured during the compression tests; Shore sceleroscope hardness was measured before the compression tests. Conclusions are that some relation appears to exist between compressive strength and the following properties and features for all specimens: dynamic Young's modulus, sonic velocity, density, rock composition, slope of velocity curve, composition and fabric of fracture fillings-veinlets, and apparent porosity. There appears to be some relation between compressive strength and Shore scelerscope hardness for the quartz monzonite (San Manuel). A relation appears to exist between texture and compressive strength and the extent of failure on fracture fillings for schists, gneiss, and fine-grained granite (Climax). The amount of swelling clays (montmorillonite, hydromicas, etc.) present in the rock and the relative number of fractures in which they constitute of major portion of the fracture fillings are related to the strength of the rocks. Possible tests for checking the amount of these clays present is presented including saturation, dyes, and X-rays. A useful index relating to rock strength, as revealed in this study, is the presence of swelling clays in detectable abundances. These clays can be detected in the field with a simple wetting and striking test; in the laboratory they can be detected by X-ray and dye methods.

When a company develops a mineral property in a remote area of Alaska, it must consider how best to house its personnel. This Bureau of Mines report examines the economics of two options: company towns and company camps. The price required to maintain a 15% discounted-cash-flow rate of return (DCFROR) was derived for hypothetical 1,000-st/d cut-and-fill mines and 50,000-st/d open-pit mines located in three different regions of the State, One set of hypothetical mines utilizes a townsite; the other utilizes a relatively new concept, a fly-in camp or commuting operation, in which two shifts of employees operate the mine and all associated facilities for 1 week before being replaced by a second crew. The study shows that operating costs were higher for mines employing the commuting option than for mines having a company town because of the additional wages paid for overtime hours; however, the price required to obtain a 15% DCFROR for the single-product copper concentrate, f.0.b. the mill site, was significantly lower owing to the lower investment costs for the camp-type operation. The economic advantage for those mines utilizing the camp increases from south to north and from the coast toward the interior.

As part of the United States Department of the Interior, Bureau of Mines Health and Safety Research Program, Walter C. McCrone Associates, Incorporated has examined 71 samples of airborne mine dusts using the techniques of x-ray diffraction, electron microprobe analysis and light microscopy. This report details the procedures which were used in this work and documents the results which were obtained.

Over-exposure to noise remains a widespread, serious health hazard in the U.S. mining industries despite 25 years of regulation. Most other categories of illnesses and injuries associated with mining have improved, with the exception of hearing loss. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) coal noise sample data collected from 2000 to 2002 show that 65% of the equipment whose operators exceeded 100% noise dosage is comprised of seven different types of machines. The continuous mining machine is first among all the equipment with 35% of the noise overexposures. The ational Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is conducting research to reduce excessive exposure for operators of continuous mining machines and preventing additional cases of oise Induced Hearing Loss (NIHL) by developing low-cost retrofit noise controls for mining equipment. This paper describes a noise control for reducing the noise overexposures of continuous mining machine operators. Underground results show a 26.4% and 27.4% noise exposure reduction for the continuous mining machine operator. This research is providing the mining community with an additional noise control to be utilized on continuous mining machines, therefore reducing operator noise overexposure. Utilizing this newly developed noise control, along with previously proven controls for the continuous mining machine chain conveyor, will provide operators of these machines an opportunity to be within the MS HA-Permissible Exposure Limit (MSHA-PEL).

This Bureau of Mines publication contains routine analyses and related source data for 495 natural gas samples from 21 States and three foreign countries. Of this total, 376 samples were collected during calendar year 1968. The remaining 119 analyses are of samples collected during previous years, but releases granting permission to publish the results Here not received until 1968. All samples were collected as a part of a continuous survey of the free world for occurrences of helium in natural gas. This survey has been conducted in the United States by the Bureau of Mines since 1917 and in late 1965 was expanded to include foreign gasfields. The analyses published herein were made by mass spectrometer and a special helium analysis apparatus which are described in Bureau of Mines Bulletins 4863 and 576.4 Ten previous publications have presented results of 8,165 gas analyses made by the Bureau of Hines Helium Activity prior to 1968. The properties of crude petroleum continue to interest the Bureau of Mines and constitute an important phase of its major studies on the mineral resources of the United States. The Bureau's interest in the subject has been intensified by frequent requests for information on the characteristics of crude petroleum from various producing fields. Since its inception the Bureau of Mines has collected and analyzed samples of typical oils and at present has surveyed and classified crude petroleums from nearly all the known oil fields of the Western Hemisphere. Results of these surveys have been presented in various Bureau of Mines publications. (See bibliography, appendix A, p. 145.) The nature and comparative value of crude oils from various countries and the extent to which these oils may be considered potential competitors for markets are of manifest importance to the petroleum industry in all lands, largely because all crude oils, wherever produced, are either actual or potential competitors for a market with all other crude oils. The numerous discussions of foreign production of oil that have appeared in the technical press in the past indicate the great interest of the United States in this subject.

Shales , clays , and loess in Iowa were tested and evaluated to determine feasibility of producing lightweight aggregate by commercial rotary - kiln or sintering methods . Preliminary testing was conducted in a muffle furnace . Rotary - kiln tests were conducted in a 16 - inch by 14 - foot rotary kiln . Concrete cylinders and cubes were tested to determine qualities of the aggregate . Three samples made suitable lightweight aggregate by rotary - kiln methods and two by sintering .

The National Safety Competition conducted by the Bureau of Mines, United States Department of the Interior, is held each year for the purpose of promoting safety in the mineral industries of the United States. Since the program was inaugurated in 1925, twenty-three safety competitions have been held. This publication is a report of the results of the contests held in 1944, 1945, 1946, and 1947. The names of plants that have been awarded "Sentinels of Safety" trophies and Certificates of Achievement in Safety dur- ing these years, together with a summary of their achievements in injury prevention, are listed. Statistical data covering the injury experience of all plants entered in the annual contests also are included in this publi- cation. The injury statistics of these plants, arranged in the six groups of the competition, are the only data on injury severity at mineral operations available to the Bureau of Mines. Interest in the National Safety Competition has increased steadily. The number of participating plants has increased from 210 in 1925, the first year of the competition, to the record number of 494 in 1946. The widening scope of the competition means that a steadily increasing number of the mines and quarries in the United States are participating in a program that will supplement their other activities in promoting safety. Safety competitions have long been recognized as instrumental in stimulating and holding the interest of employees and officials in accident-prevention work. During the years covered by this report, conditions in the mineral industries of the United States were hardly conducive to setting records in accident prevention. During the war years, handicaps were especially severe- loss of skilled employees to the armed forces or to higher-wage war industries, greater production by a smaller force of workers, relatively high rates of labor turn-over, the longer workday in effect through 1944 and 1945, and difficulties in obtaining repairs and replacement for badly worn machinery. Even the immediate postwar period has brought no abatement of the tremendous pressure upon the mineral industries for greater production. Although there was a decrease of 18 in 1947 from the record enrollment in 1946, these oper- ations worked 160,525,025 man-hours, the greatest number of man-hours of exposure to mining hazards in any year of the contest except 1942. Despite the accelerated pace at which the mineral industry worked during the 4 years covered by this report, participants in the National Safety Competition have achieved creditable performances in the promotion of safety. In fact, the injury-severity rate in the enrolled plants in the 1947 contest was 7.315 days for each thousand man-hours worked, the lowest by far in the history of the National Safety Competition. The injury-frequency rate of 42.155 for each million man-hours of exposure to mine hazards in 1947 marks a favorable trend downward from the rate of 50.577 in 1946, which was the

The Federal Bureau of Mines participated with the National Aeronautics and Space Administration and Martin Marietta Aerospace in developing, building, and testing a portable X-ray fluorescence spectrometer for use as an analyzer in mineral-resource investigative work. The prototype battery-powered spectrometer, measuring I1 by 12 by 5 inches and weighing only about 15 pounds, was designed specifically for field use. The spectrometer has two gas-proportional counters and two radioactive sources, 109Cd and 55Fe. Preliminary field and laboratory tests on rock specimens and rock pulps have demonstrated the capability of the spectrometer to detect 33 elements, to date. Characteristics of the system present some limitations, however, and further improvements are recommended.

The Annual Report of the Director of the Bureau of Mines to the Secretary of the Interior for the Fiscal Year ended June 30, 1945, summarizes the year's work on coal as follows: Coal and Coal Products The United States maintained its No. 1 industrial position in supplying fuel for war and in preparing for peace through more complete mining, improved preparation and up-grading of coal for special uses, and better utilization of coal in industrial establishments and homes.

"Chromates are known to induce tumors (1, 2), mutations (3), and DNA damage (4-6). However, the underlying biochemical mechanism(s) is (are) not fully understood (6). Recent studies have indicated that hydroxyl (·OH) radical may play an important role (7-11). The mechanistic studies of Cr(Vl)-related ·OH radical generation in biochemical systems have shown the reaction of a Cr(V) species with hydrogen peroxide (H20 2 } through a Fenton-like mechanism to be one of the important steps (9-11): Cr(V) + H20 2 - Cr(VI) + ·OH + OH-. (1)In biological systems the Cr(V) species are generated via the reduction of Cr(VI) by a variety of components, such as microsomes (12), mitochondria (13), mitochondrial electron transfer complexes (14), and at least three flavoenzymes (glutathione reductase (GSSG-R),3 lipoyl dehydrogenase, and ferredoxin-NADP+ oxidoreductase) (9, 15, 16). In the case of flavoenzymes, Cr(V) formation is accompanied by the reduction of molecular oxygen ( 0 2 ) to H20 2 • The Cr(V) species then reduces H20 2 to generate •OH radicals and Cr(VI) (16).To understarid the mechanism by which Cr(V}-generated ·OH radicals cause cytotoxicity, Aiyar et al. The Coast Range subarea of the Juneau Mining District (JMD) extends from the Canadian border north of the community of Skagway, southerly to Tracy Arm. It is bounded by the international boundary on the north and eastern edges. The Ferebee Glacier and Lynn Canal mark the western boundary, extending south to the Berners Bay region. From Berners Bay south, the western boundary is the eastern boundary of the Juneau Gold Belt (fig. E-l). The city of Skagway (fig. E-2) is the only developed community within the confines of the subarea. Skagway was originally established as a port for the Klondike gold rush of 1898. Recently, Skagway has gained prominence as a port for shipping goods into and mineral products out of Yukon Territory (fig. E-3). Skagway has also developed a thriving tourist industry based on its Alaskan traditions. The community of Skagway maintains a paved airstrip which is suitable for use by small multi-engine aircraft. Several regional air carriers serve Skag-way with frequent scheduled flights, especially during the summer months. Helicopter charter services are available from Skagway during the summer months.

A joint investigation by the Bureau of Mines and the Christopher Coal Co. at the Humphrey No. 7 mine, operating in the Pittsburgh coalbed in northern West Virginia, was undertaken to gain more insight concerning the hazardous emission of methane gas in mining, This report describes the equipment, procedure, and results. Horizontal bleeder holes drilled in the faces drained large quantities of methane, eliminating downtime of mining equipment. Also, larger quantities of methane were removed by forcing 14 to 25 g.p.m. water at 25 to 200 p.s.i. 5 pressure into the bleeder holes, In one infusion test a fluorescein dye was added to the infusion water; in later mining operations, the infusion water was traced for a distance of 1,500 feet. With vacuum pump applied to the horizontal hole the gas-flow rate increased, and the methane content decreased.

In 1992, the Bureau of Mines conducted a mineral resource investigation of the 78,000-acre Garns Mountain study area in southeastern Idaho. The area had been proposed for Wilderness. It is underlain by Paleozoic to Mesozoic-age sedimentary rocks about 11,000 feet thick. Rocks have been faulted, offset, and folded as part of the northerly-trending Idaho-Wyoming Overthrust Belt. Study area mineral occurrences are: phosphate in the Permian Phosphoria Formation; coal in the Cretaceous Frontier end Bear River Formations; and uranium in carbonaceous and phosphate-bearing shales and coal of these formations. Four zones of phosphate are estimated to contain about 528 mitt ion tons of rock with over 10% P205; samples of phosphate-rich rock also contained as much as 3950 ppm chromium, 3280 ppm vanadium, 23 ppm gallium, and 5540 ppm zinc. Fragments of poor-quality coal and carbonaceous shale were found in the area; coal was mined near the northeast border. Uranium content up to 0.016% U3O8 is in carbon-rich shales. Oil and gas were drilled for, with minimal success, in folded sedimentary rocks (frontier and Nugget Sandstone) in the Horseshoe anticline, near the east border. Examined workings included 12 dozer cuts, 4 trenches, 2 prospect pits, and 2 caved adits. No production is known, and no leases or claims are held for the area.
