"Re-entrainment refers to dislodgement of particles deposited by both atmospheric and nonatmospheric processes and their subsequent insertion into a flowing field. Formation of sand dunes, snow drifts, soil erosion and fugitive dust emissions are a few examples of the natural occurrence of re-entrainment. Re-entrainment studies have been done for the estimation of potential hazards from nuclear fallouts. The phenomenon of re-entrainment has been utilized for the cleaning of wafers and filters. Re-entrainment is associated with both surface and underground mining activities. However, studies on dust re-entrainment in mine atmospheres are limited. Understanding the re-entrainment phenomenon is important because dust particles lying seemingly harmless on the ground and adhering to numerous surfaces can get re-entrained and become a health and safety hazard.There are significant differences in the kind of re-entrainment encountered in underground mines and those in other fields of interest. These major differences are air velocity, direction of air flow, particle size, amount of particles, and time of exposure. While numerous studies have been done in other fields to identify the role of interacting variables and their contribution to the mechanisms of re-entrainment, no similar reported work is available for dust in mine atmospheres.In this paper, recent research efforts on re-entrainment are reviewed. The most suitable form of representing re-entrainment in underground coal mine atmosphere is presented. Various approaches to studying re-entrainment phenomenon in mines are also outlined.In the mineral industries, formation of dust particles of widely varying sizes is a natural outcome of the fragmentation required in mining the solid resources. Fine particles in mine atmospheres, particularly in the respirable size range, are a threat to the health and safety of the miners when present in high concentrations. In 1980 the National Academy of Sciences (NAS) Committee on the Measurement and Control of Respirable Dust in Mines recommended that the spatial and temporal characteristics (of fragments produced in coal mining) need to be understood so that the exposure of workers to the dust can be controlled. Recently several studies have been performed to understand the fundamental behavior of the airborne respirable dust in mine airways (Bhaskar, 1987; Qin, 1988; Polat, 1989; Bode, 1990)."

Two-stage electric smelting tests, using small submerged arc furnaces, were made on high-iron manganiferous materials from the Pioche District, Nev., and the Cuyuna Range, Minn. The object was to reduce sufficient iron in the first stage to give a slag with a favorable Mn to Fe ratio for smelting to ferromanganese in the second stage. The nodulized flotation concentrate from the Pioche District contained 29.2 percent Mn and had a Mn to Fe ratio of 2.3:l. When smelted with coke and silica or alumina as flux, more than 90 percent of the manganese was recovered in slags with Mn to Fe ratios of 10: :24:1. The Pioche slag was smelted to ferromanganese using coke and lime- stone or dolomite as flux. The ferromanganese was high in silicon but other- wise met specifications. Recovery of manganese to ferromanganese in this step was 73 to 78 percent. Overall recovery of manganese was about 70 percent. The sintered flotation concentrate from the Cuyuna Range material contained 12.9 percent Mn and had a Mn to Fe ratio of 0.3:1. When smelted with limestone as flux, about 83 percent of the manganese was recovered in a slag with a Mn to Fe ratio of about 6:1. The Cuyuna slag was smelted to ferromanganese with coke and limestone for flux. Recovery in this step was 61 percent of the manganese in a high silicon ferromanganese. Overall recovery of manganese was about 50 percent.

Conventional flame channelling operates continuously at over 120 db --flame-drill channelling at a maximum of 95 db. The latter process was developed under this program. Individual drill holes are spaced to leave narrow rock webs. Sound and dust passing from the hole are effectively treated by a muffler and water injection.

"INTRODUCTION The discovery in 1901 of ""gusher"" oil production at Spindletop, Tex., Tex., a salt-dome structure, led to exploratory drilling on other known domes and known domes and in areas contiguous to salt domes in the Gulf Coast region of Texas and Louisiana. Early drilling on the flanks of the domal structures disclosed incompetent 3/ shales, which flowed into the hole when attempts were made to drill through them. Often these shales seized the drill pipes and presented with equipment then in use, an insuperable barrier to deeper drilling. The obstructing incompetent shales came to be called ""heaving"" shales by drillers who attempted to drill through them. Formations of this type have hampered the penetration of the drill bit in many area in the Gulf Coast region to such an extent that the drilling of wells through heaving shale has become a major problem."

Consumption of abrasive materials in the United States decreased 23% in value from that of 1981 to $262 million, of which 53% was manufactured abrasive, 39% was industrial diamond (natural and synthetic), and 8% was natural abrasive. Production of natural abrasives, excluding industrial diamond, appeared to be stable when compared with that of 1981. Production of tripoli, a porous siliceous rock, increased slightly after decreasing steadily over the three previous years. Track in underground bituminous coal mines was investigated, and technology was taken from other industries in order to obtain information on conditions that impair the safety and efficiency of the track and to develop guidelines and useful information on the construction, inspection and maintenance of mine track. Volume 1 contains information on the investigations, observed track conditions, useful technology from railroads and other industries, derivations of track condition descriptors and recommended limits, conclusions, and recommendations. Volume 2, Guidelines, contains recommended standards and practices for mine track. It includes the relation of track conditions to safe speeds; descriptions and limits for measurable track features such as gage; descriptions of conditions for track components that are normally not measurable, such as subbase soils; construction requirements and techniques, inspection requirements and methods; and methods for managing and performing track maintenance work. As a research product, it does not repeat the summary or derivations. Volume 3, Inspection Handbook, summarizes recommended standards and procedures from Volume 2 and provides related information for' ready reference by inspectors in the mines. The U.S. economy boomed in 1965, completing its fifth consecutive year of expansion. Although the advance was somewhat irregular, previous records for production, sales, employment, and income were topped. During the first few months of 1965, as the economy recovered from the depressing effects of the automobile strikes of late 1964, increases were unusually large. The gains moderated in early spring, but were stimulated at midyear by sharply rising capital outlays, excise tax cuts, in? creased Social Security payments, and accelerated Viet-Nam defense expenditures. Gross national product (GNP) in cur-rent dollars rose $49.5 billion or 7.8 percent, to a total of S681.2 billion. In constant dollars (effects of price changes eliminated), GNP increased 5.9 percent, a rate considerably higher than the historical postwar annual average growth of 3.5 per-cent. Demand increased in most final markets and was especially strong for business fixed investment and consumption expenditures. With the exception of construction, most of the increases in GNP were real, since prices increased less than 2 percent.

The W. E. Dunkle mine, sometimes called the Costello Creek coal mine, is 8 miles N. 20° W. of Colorado Station on the Alaska Railroad. The presence of coal in this area has been known since the district was extensively prospected for gold between 1911 and 1915. At that time, coal from this deposit was used by miners for blacksmithing. The increased demand for coal resulting from government defense projects in Alaska led to exploitation of this deposit in 1941. The inability of Alaska coal mines to supply the quantity of coal required by public and private consumers and by the armed forces in Alaska was responsible for establishment by the Army of the Coal Procurement Section of its Alaska Department. It proposed to investigate the deposits and to expedite production from the Alaskan coal fields. The Bureau of Mines closely cooperated in this program. The quality of the Dunkle coal and the favorable location of the deposit caused it to be one of the properties chosen for investigation under a joint Army-Bureau of Mines-Geological Survey program.

Alumina can be recovered from clay , using 30 percent nitric acid for digestion . Calcined clay is crushed and then digested at 325 ° F and 85 psig pressure with less than stoichiometric nitric acid required to form normal aluminum nitrate . In this way , a solution containing both normal aluminum nitrate , Al ( NO3 ) 3 , and basic aluminum nitrate , assumed to be Al ( OH ) ( NO3 ) 2 , is formed , and in which iron is virtually insoluble . The solution is filtered and then concentrated in vacuum evaporators to crystallize normal aluminum nonahydrate . The crystals are washed with 50 percent nitric acid and then decomposed to alumina and nitrogen oxides . The design that has been developed for this process is based on published work . For a plant producing 1,000 tons of alumina a day , the estimated operating cost is $60.69 per ton of alumina , and the estimated fixed capital cost is $ 76 million using a Marshall and Stevens chemical equipment index basis of 240.0 . This process is not competitive under current economic conditions with the production of alumina from bauxite via the Bayer process . For lowering costs , future research should include study of leaching at lower temperatures under atmospheric pressure and alternate aluminum nitrate decomposition methods .

Certain commercial telephone test equipment was modified and a tone source and switching circuit were developed for use in the testing of mine pager phone systems. Descriptions are included of the modifications to a commercial test set and of a tone source/ switching unit.

The Bureau of Mines conducted laboratory experiments to determine the change during retorting in the apparent permeability and the degree of compaction of beds of broken oil shale. Grades of oil shale studied ranged from 20.6 to 46.7 gallons of oil per ton (gpt), and the simulated overburden pressures applied to the shale were from 300 to 900 psi. Linear regression analysis of the data produced equations describing the response of the oil shale. Oil shales of approximately 20 gpt experience only minor apparent permeability reductions under test conditions, but richer shales (30 to 50 gpt) lose essentially all permeability. The permeability reductions were accompanied by corresponding decreases in bed height that ranged up to 37 percent of the original bed height.

"INTRODUCTION An electrolytic process for the preparation of metallic cobalt has been developed recently in the Bureau of Mines Experimental Station at Boulder City, Nev. Chemical analysis shows this cobalt to contain impurities in small percentages, chief of which is nickel. It is desirable to be able to determine these impurities spectrographically. This report is concerned with a procedure for the spectrochemical determination of nickel in cobalt.Previous spectrographic work on cobalt was done by Breckpot and Mevis,/ who used the method of homologous pairs of lines. However, it was felt that a more detailed investigation was needed, employing the method of internal standards.ACKNOWLEDGMENTWe are indebted to B. G. In this Bureau of Mines study, sealants containing mineral wool, cement, etc, were sprayed through dry-process equipment that propels dry material pneumatically to the water-adding nozzle. Advantages over slurry applications include no mixing, no extensive cleanup, and freedom from hardened cement in equipment should power be lost. Sealants with large mineral wool nodules (>l-inch) were sprayable at rates to 900 square feet per hour for 1/2-inch thickness with little dust and smooth material flow through equipment, but they were weak for mine use, Materials containing small wool nodules (1/4-inch) were stronger but tended to plug lines because the nodules were inadequately separated in the shredder. Increasing the dedusting oil also increased line plugging by holding the nodules together in larger lumps. Best results were obtained using a 3/4-inch-nodule wool with cement binder, which provided both smooth flow through the machine and adequate strength.

Prolonged exposure to airborne respirable coal mine dust is responsible for coal workers' pneumoconi¬osis (CWP): Furthermore, miners who show evidence of higher radiographic categories of simple CWP are at increased risk of developing progressive massive fibro¬sis (PMF). As of 1990, there were nearly 130,000 coal miners in the United States. "' This excludes mines that produce less than 10,000 tons annually and the anthracite coal mines. Estimates indicate that at age 58, an average of 7/1000 U.S. workers and 89/1000 U.K workers will have developed PMF(2-1) Health research studies have iden¬tified that the risk of developing and the severity of CWP arc directly related to (1) the amount of respirable dust exposure and (2) the coal rank.,'- The rank of coal is its stage of formation in the series peat, lignite, sub-bituminous, bituminous, and anthra¬cite (in order of increasing rank). The rank of coal can also be represented by the com¬mercially important characteristics specified by its proximate analysis: fixed carbon, vol¬atile matter, mineral matter, and moisture content.

Recent investigations of finely ground materials have verified Rittinger's law of crushing.4, This law states that the surface produced is proportional to the work expended in the crushing operation. Thus, for a unit of work applied to crushing quartz a definite amount of surface will be produced. Obviously, this amount of work applied to some other mineral will not produce equivalent surface. It follows that in an investigation of mill practice, where ore is being crashed, the relative crushing resistance of the component minerals must be known. In a previous investigation of the Rittinger law,5 the crashing resistance that is, the work required to produce a unit of surface - was accurately determined for quartz. The surface values were obtained by means of the rite of dissolution of quartz in hydrofluoric acid.6 If it were possible so to measure surface on other minerals the determination of relative crushing, resistance would be a simple matter; however, the results obtained on minerals other than quartz by a dissolution method were not encouraging. Moreover, if accurate values could be obtained by dissolution this method could probably never be used on a mixture of minerals such as occurs in an ore.

THIS REPORT give's the results of a study of the central and south parts of the Cushing oilfield, including a description of the geology, a review of the production history, and estimates of oil reserves available by secondary-recovery methods. Each of the major producing zones of the field is treated separately. The report, which is one of a long series of field studies the Bureau of Mines has conducted over the past 40 years, was prepared to aid operators to increase oil recovery and to help prevent underground waste in the Cushing field, in the State of Oklahoma, and in the United States. The geology and production history are presented not as a review of past behavior of the Cushing field but rather to interpret the possibilities for increased oil recovery by future development of this and similar areas. The field, which is in the northwest corner of Creek County, Okla., was discovered in 1912 and developed during 1913 and 1914. For several years it, was one of the most important areas producing high-grade crude oil in Oklahoma. Although some oil has been recovered from each of 10 separate reservoirs, nearly 98 percent of the total recovery of oil in the area studied was from 4 major producing formations (table 1). "Conservation of fuel in boiler-plant practice is one of the major projects of the Bureau of Mines. The large central stations with their corps of trained operators and with refined equipment obtain relatively good efficiency. It is in the many smaller isolated plants that the large fuel wastes are apt to occur. Some operators seem to feel that their responsibility is largely expressed in the phase the phase ""carry the load,"" rather than ""carry the load and carry it efficiently."" Often equipment is not provided to give sufficiently accurate guidance to the operator.In within many such plants, it is interesting to note how frequently the same mistakes occur. The following quite typical example illustrates some of these circumstances and their effort on operation. The boiler plant consisted of two 1000 hp. boilers equipped with multiple retort under-feed stokers. These were horizontal water-tube boilers with horizontal baffling, having a high bridge wall at the back of the stoker. One boilers was used to carry a summer carry a winter load of about 1250 hp. The operators felt that one boiler was not sufficient to carry the winter load. No instruments are available for the operator's use, excepting the steam ores sure gases."

"During the year which has passed since the last progress report on reduction of zinc by natural gas,3 the laboratory experiments on this investigation have been completed. In this concluding report, the whole subject will be reviewed and additional data presented.Chemical ReactionsIn a thermodynamic study of zinc smelting, Maier 4 discussed the use of methane for reducing zinc oxide, and predicted equilibria at various temperatures for the sore important reactions. The study has been extended to include the following list.Maier predicted that 870°C. would be the critical temperature above which reaction (1) would take precedence over reaction (2) and that reaction (1) at equilibria would be substantially complete at or above 927°C. A subsequent papers described experimental verification of these predictions and gave data on reaction rates under various conditions.It methane is passed through a heated bed of zinc oxide at a low enough rate reactions (1), (3), and (4) reach an equilibrium which can be expressed by reaction (10). The equilibrium concentrations for the products of this reaction in the temperature range 900° to 1100°C. were calculated by applying the thermodynamic constants to the stoichiometric relations. 6 The results of these calculations are listed in table 1 and shown graphically in figures 1, A and B. These data have major importance, and experimental work has shown that they are subtantially correct."
