The Bureau of Mines is currently conducting a comprehensive study to evaluate all aspects of recovering gold from large, low-grade deposits in the Golden Sunlight area, Whitehall mining district, Jefferson County, Mont. Prior to World War II this area produced significant quantities of gold. The study includes geologic mapping, diamond drilling, assaying, computer analysis of assay data, metallurgical research and ore testing, mine and mill planning, and an economic evaluation of all factors bearing on the establishment of a producing gold mine. Preliminary evaluation of the deposit indicates about 31 million tons of submarginal gold resources. American Exploration and Mining Co. (AMEX) has assisted the Bureau in this project by providing drill site preparation, control assays, and geological aid for the Bureau's exploration work and by furnishing comprehensive assay information of the property and copies of base and geologic maps. This report presents the geology and mining history of the area, together with a summary of Bureau work in progress.

Galvanizers' sal skimmings have been treated by two methods of leaching in attempts to produce preflux solutions suitable for use in galvanizing operations. Both water-leaching and acid-leaching procedures are effective, except in severely exhausted skimmings when water-leaching becomes impractical. A preliminary analysis of the skimmings is not required. Solutions in the recommended concentration range can be produced conveniently by control of pH, specific gravity, and chlorine content. A technician would require only a short period of training to be able to perform the operations described.

"INTRODUCTION During the Bureau's extensive program of investigating possible domestic sources of manganese, an are-dressing study was conducted in its laboratories at Salt Lake City, Utah, on a sample of oxide manganese ore representative of vein material from the Ophir Hill mine at Ophir, Tooele County, Utah. The sample (obtained by blasting down and mixing a portion of the vein) was submitted by the Ophir Development Co. of Ophir, Utah. As the ore was too law in grade to be acceptable for direct production of ferromanganese, it was tested to determine its amenability to concentration by ore-dressing methods.At the beginning of the investigation of manganese-ore beneficiation in December 1940, the only product marketable to Metals Reserve Company was ferrograde manganese, grade B, the requirements for which follow: Mn, min., 48 percent; Fe, max., 7 percent; Si02, max., 10 percent; P, max., 0.18 percent; A1203, max., 6 percent; Zn, max., 1 percent.Later, the specifications were modified gradually. As of May 15, 1943, manganese products were acceptable if they contained over 35 percent manganese and less than 3 percent zinc and 1 percent phosphorus. Prices were based upon material containing 48 percent manganese, 6.0 percent iron, and 11 percent silica plus alumina. Premium were paid for manganese content in excess of, 48 percent and iron content below 6 percent, penalties being imposed upon products containing less than 48 percent manganese or more than 6 percent iron or more than 11 percent silica plus alumina. The specifications for commercial manganese further required that maximum particle size be 12 inches and that 75 percent of the product be coarser than 20-mesh. Therefore, fine material, such as table and flotation concentrates, had to be nodulized or sintered. In addition, carbonate manganese ores were not acceptable unless calcined."

[Important discoveries of new oil fields were made in 1937 in the State of Illinois. Oil production, which was virtually constant during 1934, 1935, and 1936 at about 4,400,000 barrels a year, a increased to 7,499,000, barrels during 1937, and in 1938 this production was trebled. In 1939, 94,302,0003/ barrels were produced (almost foot times the 1938 quantity), making Illinois one of the cost important oil-producing areas in the United States. The Bureau of Mines has analyzed 35 samples of petroleum from these new Illinois fields and presents the analyses herein. Included with them in this report are analyses of seven samples from fields developed before 1936.]

The leasing or tribute system has been an important factor in the development of our metal-mining industry, particularly in the gold and silver mines of the Western States. It has received its widest application in. the early history of many camps and in the last stages of many mines. The system is especially adapted to mining where the ore's occur in narrow veins or are erratically distributed in small bunches or pockets so that selective mining, hand sorting, screening, or hand cobbing is required to produce shipping or milling-grade ore. The leasing system is also applicable to the development of prospects where the owners are unable or unwilling to assume the risks of searching for ore. The virtue of the system lies in the opportunity it affords miners with little capital to get started; at the same time, it rives owners an opportunity to have their property developed at small cost.

"The Bureau of Mines in cooperation with the American Gas Association investigating the relation of properties of gas oils to the gum-forming properties of carbureted water gas. The present report deals with the effects of operating practice on the composition of the light oils from carbureted water gas. A general outline of the gummy meter problem has been presented in a previous paper.*Carbureted water gas is a mixture roughly of 80 per cent water gas by volume and 20 per cent oil gas. The latter, though small in relative volume, supplies more than half of the heating value of the gas under the present-day standard. Therefore, it is logical that the oil used in the carbureting process and the operating practices involved should be subjected to scientific study. Many investigations***** bearing on the aspects considered in this paper have been carried out in the past."

The following information on accidents in Alabama during 1930 was compiled from data obtained from the companies represented in a course on accident prevention given by the United States Bureau of Mines in Birmingham. These mines produced nearly three-quarters of the tonnage of that State for the year, and included most of the larger operations in the district. The figures are probably representative of the mines which are doing recognized safety work, and are better than the average for all the mines in Alabama. Table 1 lists the days lost in accordance with the weights given to fatalities and permanent disabilities, part and total, which is the scale used in the National Safety Com¬ petition for Mines, conducted by this bureau. By way of explanation, temporary disabilities are weighted according to actual number of calendar days of disability, including Sundays and holidays — that is, all days are counted except the day of accident and day of employee's ability to return to duty. Hernia is classed as a temporary disability to be charged with the actual number of calendar days during which the employee was unable to work. Table 2 gives the number of accidents and the days lost from each cause at 45 coal mines and 7 iron ore mines, also the average frequency and severity rates.

This report presents the results of a field and laboratory study by the Federal Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with the California Division of Mines, of the swelling-type bentonite deposits in the Vallecitos area in San Benito County, Calif. The purpose of the study was to learn if these large deposits contain bentonite of sufficient quality and quantity to be of economic value as an oil-well drilling mud additive. Large amounts of bentonitic clays are used by the petroleum industry as well as the steel industry in California. Additional amounts may be required in the near future as a concrete or earth-fill admixture in constructing dams and canals in the California Central Valley. Depletion of some local clay deposits and loss of others to military installation areas have given new emphasis to the need for developing new bentonite deposits in California.

The record of fatalities from mine explosions in the United States during the past 44 years has been the best in the history of the mining industry, despite the fact that the number of fatalities from this cause during the past fiscal year now is nearly double that of the previous year. During there 4 fiscal years, mine explosions have resulted in an average of 45.5 deaths per year, compared with an average of 153 deaths per year for the preceding 5 years; an average of 542 deaths per year for the 3 years 1907-1909, inclusive, and a yearly average of 265 deaths per year for the 20 years prior to 1929. Other types of mine accidents also have been reduced during this period, but not to the same degree or by as large a percentage as mine explosions. The fact that in this fiscal year ended June 30, 1937, electricity was responsible for 60 percent of the explosions and 85.5 percent of the fatalities resulting therefrom (see tables 3 and 4) is evidence that either mine operators are lax in providing proper electrical equipment or there is laxity in the upkeep and use of electricity in our mines and more particularly in our coal mines. Several large coal-producing States that in the Fast have had numerous disastrous explosions have been free from such disasters for continuous periods of as long as 8 years. The bituminous mines of Pennsylvania, one of the largest coal-producing States, give a good example of what can be done to prevent explosions. 'his State, with its large number of operating mines, many with very definite hazards from gas or dust or both, has had only two major explosions (resulting in 16 fatalities) during the past 7 years; this is a decidedly good record compared with any similar period in the past and when it is considered that during this period about 750,000,000 tons of coal have been produced. Other good records are: Tennessee, without a single fatality from explosions during the past 9 years; Alabama, with 6 fatalities during the past 7 years; Illinois, with no explosions during the past 4 years; and

Fifteen alkyl cycloalkyl sulfides and three dicycloalkyl sulfides were synthesized to provide reference compounds in the search for these classes of sulfur compounds in crude oils. In synthesizing sulfides by alkaline alkylation the order in which the reactants were added was shown to determine the yield and purity of the product.

The number of completed petroleum refineries in the United States continued to decline in 1937 , but the total capacity to process crude oil continued to increase . These facts were ascertained in the Bureau's annual canvass of refinery capacity as of January 1 , 1938 . Several important changes were made in the census questionnaire for January 1 , 1938 . First , the basis of reckoning cracking capacity was changed from cracking stock charged to cracked gasoline produced . Although this is a definite improvement , in that it is no longer necessary to consider the yield , it is unfortunate that the data for January 1 , 1938 cannot be compared with cracking - capacity statistics since 1925. Other changes or additions included separating capacity at operating plants into that actually operating and that closed down ; collecting data on capacity added or retired during the previous year ; breaking down idle capacity according to physical status ; and separating new capacity into that built for replacement and that built to augment existing capacity . Prior to January 1 , 1938 , the total capacity of an operating plant was listed as " operating " even though some stills might have been closed down ; furthermore , the only capacity reported as being under construction was that of new plants that were being built on January 1. To make the statistics clear , the totals for the United States as of January 1 , 1938 , are given on both the old and the new bases . On January 1 , 1938 , there were 551 completed plants compared with 572 the previous year . Ten new plants were under construction on that date compared with 11 the year before . The greatest number of completed plants recorded was 632 on January 1 , 1936 ; since then , competitive conditions , particularly in the East Texas field , have been instrumental in reducing the number of small independent plants . The total crude- oil capacity of the completed refineries on January 1 , 1938 , was 4,351,151 barrels , of which 3,970 , 196 barrels ( 91 percent ) represented the capacity in actual operation and 380,955 barrels ( 9 percent ) was shut down . The " shut -down " capacity ( 199,875 barrels on the old basis ) was the lowest since pre- depression days , chiefly because numerous idle East Texas plants were removed from the list . The new method of compiling the statistics sheds considerable light on excess crudeoil capacity , which has been the subject of considerable speculation in recent years . The highest daily average crude runs to stills reached in this country was about 3,460,000 barrels in September 1937. At that time , the total crude - oil capacity was about 3,925,000 barrels . In the mica research program conducted by the Bureau of Mines at Norris , Tenn . , many micas other than silicon fluorphlogopite have been synthesized . It has been well established since the initiation of the program that synthetic micas are important materials useful for their superior or unique properties as well as substitutes for natural micas . The possibility of controlling the physical properties of synthetic mica by isomorphic substitution of other ions in the fluorphlogopite lattice further emphasizes the importance of these materials . Accurate measurement and reporting of their properties constitute an essential part of the research program . The study of germanium fluorphlogopite is in keeping with the requirements of a comprehensive study on isomorphic substitution , specifically to identify precisely the material -- chemically , structurally , and optically . The X- ray measurements , including indexed powder and single crystal data , with a description of the methods used to obtain these data , are provided . 5 Earlier work on germanium mica by R. A. Hatch et al . (5) gave an estimate of the cell parameters from X - ray powder data , but no attempt was made to index the diffraction pattern or to determine the space group symmetry . Later work by E. A. Schatz and J. C. Withers (9) listed X- ray and optical measurements , but no attempt was made to index the mica or determine its symmetry . Roth (7) found that germanium dioxide having the a - quartz structure , when heated with equimolar percentages of MgO , CaO , Sr0 , or Ba0 at 1,235 ° C , formed ABO3 -type compounds , e.g. MgGe03 isostructural with enstatite (MgSiO3 ) . Geo₂ also has a rutile - type polymorph with Ge ++ ions in octahedral coordination . Germanium was substituted for silicon in the serpentine structure by Roy and Roy (8 ) using hydrothermal techniques . These authors wrote as follows : "The substitution of Ge + for Si + yielded a magnesia - germania serpentine , formed easily in euhedral hexagonal plates which in some instances were visible in the light microscope . Electron micrographs and the sharp X - ray diffraction patterns confirm a plate - like rather than tubular habit . " It has been shown in this investigation that substitution of germanium for silicon in the mica structure is readily accomplished without radically changing the characteristics of the mica . Substitutions in the mica structure take place in three locations : Tetrahedral , octahedral , and interlayer positions . The tetrahedral positions are normally occupied by Sit or by a combination of Sit with Al +3 the most common combination being 2A1 +3 and 6Si +4 · , The octahedral position , which has six - fold coordination in phlogopite , contains a larger cation such as magnesium . In muscovite it contains only 2A1 ions ; therefore , this mica is considered a dioctahedral mica , whereas phlogopite is considered trioctahedral . +3 The interlayer position has twelve - fold coordination with six oxygen ions from each of two adjacent tetrahedral silica layers . This is the cleavage plane of the mica and commonly contains the largest cation in the mica structure (e.g. potassium) .

As part of its overall program of coal-carbonization research, the Bureau of Mines is studying the coking properties of coals from various fields of this country. Few of the coals included in this survey are used for the manufacture of metallurgical coke, although some well-known coking coals necessarily are tested to provide comparative data, particularly on blending properties. The overall objectives of the study were given in detail in a previous report.3/ The inherent suitability of coal for metallurgical purposes, as distinguished from economic considerations, depends primarily on (1) the available reserves, (2) chemical composition, (3) preparation characteristics, and (4) carbonization behavior. These items are considered in selecting coal for carbonization tests.

Vibration measurements at the workplace are often complicated and expensive. The assessment of the risk in conformity with EC Directive 2002/44/EC “Vibration” (which lays down the minimum requirements of laws in Europe for occupational safety and health) can therefore be carried out on the basis of an estimate based on information from manufacturers as well as by measurement conforming to ISO 5349. The characteristic values (emission values) determined by manufacturers in laboratory conditions may deviate from the exposure values measured at source at the workplace. Equally, deviations may arise as a result of the delay in the changeover of test methods from the single axis of measurement to the total vibration value for the three axes of measurement conforming to ISO 20643. To prevent faulty estimates, the manufacturer’s information has to be corrected by a tool-related factor in accordance with CEN/TR 15350. By taking the example of masonry and stone working machines, the empirically determined tool-related correction factor is checked and confirmed. Methods Vibration measurements were carried out in accordance with ISO 5349 in practical application conditions on 10 selected typical eccentric and orbital sanders, concrete and disc grinders as well as on wall chasers and stone saws. Results The total vibration value obtained for the investigated tools rangedfrom ahv = 3.6 m/s² to ahv = 11.6 m/s². When the values from the practical measurements are compared with the manufacturer’s vibration values, the underestimation of the risk occurring in some cases can be largely compensated for by the tool-related factors conforming to CEN/TR 15350 (see Figure 1).

Scrap beryllium chips ( nominally 96 to 97 percent Be ) were electrore fined in a prototype cell with 408 lb of electrolyte composed of 52.4 mole - percent LiCl , 36.3 mole - percent KC1 , and 11.3 mole - percent BeCl2 . The cell temperature was 500 ° C. In a typical 10-3 /4 - hour deposition cycle , 0.415 pound of metal was produced ; the metal contained impurities in parts per million as follows : C , 700 ; 0 , 610 ; Al , 34 ; Ca , 32 ; Cu , 20 ; Fe , 25 ; Mg , 9 ; and Mn , 23 . Operation of the prototype cell for 2 years demonstrated that adapting the electrorefining process to an enlarged scale of operation presented few difficulties in mechanical functions , maintenance of optimum operating conditions , and control of product purity . After the spent anode feed was leached in a 5 - percent nitric acid solution and the fine - sized particles were removed , it was recycled in some tests . The metal produced was somewhat higher in impurities than metal from the fresh scrap chips .
