A joint effort by the Bureau of Mines and the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA), U.S. Department of Labor, was undertaken to determine how well self-contained self-rescuers, deployed in accordance with Federal Regulations (30 CFK 75.1714), held up in the underground environment. This report presents findings regarding laboratory-tested breathing apparatus from the first year of a 5-yr program as well as other related findings. The SCSR's were tested on human subjects and on a breathing and metabolic simulator. These results indicate that the apparatus, if well-treated, perform as expected except for manufacturing defects or quality control problems, which are identified. However, when the apparatus are carried in and out of the mine every day and stored at the working section, they may suffer abuse that can be extreme. Physical signs of abuse, unless extremely obvious, frequently are not detected by the miners or the mine operators; this poses a danger to a potential user in case of emergency. Recommendations include improved training in inspection procedures.

This report describes the preparation characteristics of the significant coalbeds in Boone County, W. Va., as determined by the Bureau of Mines. It is one of a series describing the coals suitable for producing metallurgical coke, either as mined or after beneficiation. Over 6.3 million tons of coal was produced in Boone County, W. Va., in 1959, of which almost 5.5 million tons was mechanically cleaned in eight preparation plants. On December 31, 1959, it was estimated that almost 8 billion tons of coal remained in the county in beds 24 inches or more in thickness. Thirteen samples were collected from nine coalbeds and washability tests were made on these samples.

"INTRODUCTION The ti taniferous-iron deposits in the Iron Mountain area of the Laramie Range, and particularly the Shanton deposit, were examined by several engineers. 3/ of the Bureau of Mines during 1942, 1943, and 1944. A dip-needle survey also was made early in 1945. 4/ Interest in this property has increased as a result of the exploratory work completed by the Bureau in 1944 on the Iron Mountain deposit, 6 miles northeast of the Shanton property.ACKNOWLEDGEMENTSIn its program of exploration of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. "Introduction In 1925 the Bureau of Mines published as Technical Paper 346 a discussion of typical crude oils of the Western Hemisphere. That paper was one of a series of surveys of typical crude oils, and was the first of these to deal with properties of crude oils from countries other than the United States. The paper contains comments, tabulated data, and individual analyses of crudes typical of the producing districts of Canada, Mexico, Trinidad, Venezuela, Argentina, Colombia, and Peru; for comparison, it also has analyses of typical crudes from the chief producing districts of the United States.The Bureau of Mines undertook a study of foreign crude oils for two reasons: First, foreign fields are potential sources of supply for the United States; in fact, considerable quantities of some foreign crudes have already been imported. Second, these oils are very similar in physical and chemical properties to oils found in the United States, and a study of these resemblances has scientific value.After the publication of Technical Paper 346, the attention of the Bureau was called to the fact that the two analyses of crude oil from Venezuela which appeared in that paper were not completely representative of the production of that country. Samples of other types of oil were procured through the cooperation of Mr. R. Ogarrio, manager of the Texas Petroleum. Co., Huston, Texas, and officials of the following companies operating in Venezuela; British Controlled Oilfields, Ltd., Venezuelan Oil Concessions, Ltd., Creole Syndicate, and Venezuelan Gulf Oil Co.. Samples were collected and dispatched by Mr. D. 3. Park, representative in Maracaibo, Venezuela, of the Texas Petroleum Co. The value of the interest and cooperation of these agencies in obtaining the samples is gratefully acknowledged."

Owing to its flexibility, convenience, economy, ands availability, electric power is peculiarly adapted to the needs of the coal -mining industry. Because of such obvious advantages, the application of electricity has in recent years become more and more extensive and is now a most important factor in the Nation's coal prediction. With the introduction of this type of power into coal mines certain new, specific, and well-recognized hazards resulted. The question arises, therefore: Has the industry met these hazards squarely and. effectively? With respect to some individual companies, the answer happily is in the affirmative; with respect to the industry as a whole, there is much room for improvement.

This U.S. Bureau of Mines publication is an analysis of underground coal mine fire incidents occurring in the United States during the 15years from 1978 through 1992. The fire data used in this analysis were obtained from U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration mine fire investigation reports. Fires were analyzed by year, State, coalbed thickness, mine size, mining method, ignition source, burning substance, location, equipment involved, detection method, time of day, time of year, number of injuries and fatalities, method of extinguishment, and evacuation measures taken. In all, 164 fires are included in this report, or an average of 10.8 fires per year. The most fires occurred in West Virginia, Kentucky, and Pennsylvania, respectively. However, the fire incidence rates for these States, expressed as the number of fires per million tons of coal mined, were the lowest, second lowest, and fourth lowest of all underground coal producing States. The most common ignition source was electricity; the most common burning substance was coal; the most frequent fire location was the belt entry; the most common equipment involved in fires was the conveyor belt; and the most common extinguishing agent was water.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines developed a system for casting unique, slotted steel armor by modifying the conventional expendable pattern casting (EPC) process that is normally used for making aluminum castings. Three innovations were added to the EPC process to make the successful adaptation: (1) Vacuum was applied to sand molds, (2) continuous narrow-necked feeding systems were used to permit the casting of thin walls, and (3) fixtures were designed to prevent pattern damage and to hold critical casting tolerances, Potential problems and defects are described.

A recent survey of 23 vein-type metal mining operations in several western states discloses that some of the more serious deficiencies in ventilation technology are associated with inordinately high levels of mine resistance. This problem has progressively increased over many years of operation (without adequate remedial action) as mines have become extended in depth. Where two shafts form the downcast and upcast airways of a relatively deep mine, the whole of the mine air volume must pass through each shaft in turn. Since at least one of these shafts contains hoisting equipment, structural members are necessary to support the rigid guides and shaft walls. These offer high aerodynamic resistance. In some deep mines, a single shaft of this nature may represent upwards of one-half of the total mine resistance. The second shaft, depending upon its design, may represent an additional one-third of the mine resistance. Therefore, the various working levels throughout the mine contribute only the small remaining amount of the total mine resistance.

The Federal Bureau of Mines investigated aqueous electrolysis as a means for reducing lead chloride prepared by ferric chloride leaching of galena concentrate: NaC1 PbS + 2FeC13 ? PbC12 + 2FeC12 + S°. During electrolysis, metal was produced from solid lead chloride in contact with the cathode rather than from lead in solution. Relatively high current densities--up to 300 amp/ft2--were possible when operating in this way. A very simple cell, having a horizontal lead cathode at the bottom and a vertical graphite anode at the top, was employed. Lead chloride crystals, covering the cathode, were converted to metal powder during electrolysis, and chlorine gas or FeCls was produced at the anode, depending on the electrolyte composition. Electrolytes tried included aqueous solutions of HCI, NaCl, NH4Cl, and FeC12-NaC1. Optimum results (96-pct current efficiency, 0.23 kwhr/lb Pb) were obtained with 20 pct HC1 at 25° C, using a current density of 15 amp/ft2 and an electrode spacing of 1 inch. When the current density was increased, the energy requirement increased also but only to 0.41 kwhr/lb at 150 amp/fr3 and 0.58 kwhr/lb at 300 amp/ft2.

Heavy liquids have been used to separate minerals of different specific gravities for many years.4 5 6 7 8 9/ The method permits substantially quantitative evaluation of a variety of minerals and requires much less time than the usual methods of chemical analysis. This Bureau of Mines investigation was conducted to determine the applicability of heavy liquid mineral separation to the evaluation of certain spodumene and kyanite ores, prepared mixtures, and plant products. After careful standardization of the particular mineral and associated gangue, estimates of chemical analyses could be obtained from results of heavy liquid separations.

This report details a study which was designed to assess the effect of retroreflective material on detection and form recognition of workers in the mining environment. Further, the study attempted to determine an optimal configuration of retroreflective material with respect to amount and placement on the body to facilitate detection and form recognition. The study involved a one-fifth scale simulation of the perceptual task found in the underground low seam coal mine. Four different configurations of reflective material were presented in various body positions, common to low coal miners, at three different locations in the visual field, i.e., 10, 25, and 45 degrees from focal line-of-sight. All reflective configurations significantly improve detection and form recognition over configuration (cap only) worn by miners. As the amount of reflective material increased, accuracy also tended to increase. Based on the configurations investigated by this study, the Armband configuration (i.e., refectorized armbands, belt, self-rescuer and battery pack) was determined to be optimum. It is recommended that an actual field evaluation be made using the Armband configuration to establish if simulator results are generalizable to the underground mining environment.

A gas volumetric method was developed for determining metallic aluminum at the 0.01-to 0.3-percent level in 100-gram samples of recycled glass. The method is based on the measurement of the change in gas volume produced by the reaction 2 Al + 2 NaOH + 2 H2O ? 2 NaAl02 + 3 H2 using a simple apparatus assembled from readily available glassware. Apart from sampling errors, the precision of the method is within ±5 percent. A minor modification of the apparatus would extend the method to larger samples or samples of higher metallic aluminum content. Metallic iron and metallic zinc do not interfere at the concentrations found in recycled glass recovered from incinerator residues.

This Bureau of Mines publication describes the hardware system and software package for the semiautomatic acquisition and automatic processing of high-resolution mass spectrographic plates. The semiautomatic data acquisition allows a tenfold saving of time compared with manual data acquisition. Automatic processing of the high-resolution data to yield exact masses, intensity, and the corresponding empirical formulas is accomplished by efficient programming on a small, inexpensive, programmable calculator system.

The cause of many deaths and extensive property damage in coal mines resulting from explosions and mine fires has been directly attributable to electric cable failures (including splice failures). The Federal Bureau of Mines data show that out of 355 underground coal mine fires investigated from July 1952 to January 1960, 103 (29 percent) were directly related to trailing cables. These cable failures resulted in the death of 7 men and injuries to 37 others. These potential hazards have become greater, obviously, through the widespread adoption of mechanized mining methods with electric-driven machinery powered through trailing cables according to Young,4 68.1 percent of the total bituminous and lignite production of the United States was mined underground in 1959. About 85 percent of this production was attained by mechanized loading methods. A large majority of the mines using the hand- loading methods also used equipment with trailing cables such as cutting machines, drills, and gathering locomotives. The problem of minimizing the loss of life, resources, and equipment from cable failures should be of concern to the management of all coal mines. It would be misleading to imply that no consideration has been given to the problem and its associated hazards. Through research cable manufacturers have endeavored to develop trailing cables that will withstand the severe service imposed by underground mining conditions. Technical research groups have undertaken studies for determining improved procedure and materials for field splices. Coal companies have instituted cable maintenance programs with a view toward the reduction of cable failures and consequent improvement in safety and efficiency of operations. The Bureau of Mines investigated a series of Fe-Al-Mo alloys strengthened by ZrC (zirconium carbide) precipitates as chromium-free substitutes for stainless steels. Melting and fabrication methods were devised, and the effects of minor additions of columbium (niobium) and cerium on the mechanical properties and oxidation resistance were determined. Zirconium carbides could not be con-trolled reliably to produce fine precipitate dispersions. A more reliable carbide strengthening mechanism is required if the high-temperature strengths of types 304 and 316 stainless steels are to be duplicated. Workability and oxidation resistance of the alloy series were excellent.

The principal goal of the Oil-Shale Mining Division is to develop the most economical methods and practices for mining oil shale. Experimental work in the mine has not progressed far enough to conduct full-scale breaking tests; therefore, mining season - to October 31, 1945, has been confined largely to problems connected with drilling cost oil shale. Calculations have indicated that commercial production will result in breaking the oil shale; the largest individual turn will be for drilling. This paper is a report on the progress of phase two of drilling research to date; it outlines the development of a successful hard-surfaced rock bit for drilling oil shale.

The method described may be used to delineate irregularities, inclusions, porosity, or shrink holes in ingots up to 43 inches in length. Rou¬tine testing does not require technical personnel, and the equipment is easily maintained. INTRODUCTION For a number of years, the Northwest Electrodevelopment Laboratory of the Bureau of Mines, Albany, Oreg., under contract with the Atomic Energy Commission and the Naval Reactors Division of the Bureau of Ships, has studied the production of zirconium and has adopted the Kroll magnesium-reduction process3/ as the, most economical means of producing high-purity zirconium sponge in quantities commensurate with demand. Consumable-electrode arc melting4/ provides a practical means of melting the sponge without increasing the impurity content. The ultimate application for which the metal is intended requires that strict specifications be met to insure workability and maintain the nuclear properties and corrosion resistance. The control measures employed to satisfy these specifications include chemical, spectrographic, and metallographic analyses, mechanical and corrosion tests, and ultrasonic inspection of the finished ingot. The primary purpose of ultrasonic inspection is to augment the other control measures by checking the soundness of each ingot leaving the laboratory. An incidental but important function has been the revelation of information leading to better understanding of the arc-melting process. For example, information obtained through ultrasonic inspection relative to the occurrence and distribution of porosity in ingots has resulted in a. modification of melting practices that minimizes the occurrence.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines Information and Analysis Directorate collects world-wide data on virtually every commercially important nonfuel mineral commodity. These data form the base for tracking and assessing the health of the minerals sector of the U.S. economy. The Bureau's data collection activity was instituted by the 47th Congress in an appropriations act of August 7, 1882 (22 Stat. 329), which placed the collection of mineral statistics on an annual basis. The most recent authority for the U.S. Bureau of Mines survey activity is the National Materials and Minerals Policy, Research and Development Act of 1980 (public Law 96-479, 96th Congress). This act strengthens protection for proprietary data provided to the U.S. Department of the Interior by persons or firms engaged in any phase of mineral or mineral-material production or consumption.

Continuous remote sensing of methane concentration in underground mines. Approach A methane transducer, developed as a fixed point rib-or face-mounted operating device, measures ambient levels of methane and produces a signal that is proportional to the measured concentration. How It Works The methane transducer, developed under contract for the Bureau of Mines, uses a catalytic-type sensor which will detect methane concentration. The transducer is mounted vertically, as shown. This type of mounting minimizes dust accumulation on the sensing element, which might cause degraded operation. The unit must not be located in an area where water can continuously drip or run on It. The transducer generates an electrical signal proportional to methane concentration at the sensor. A sensor failure output indicates the status of the sensing element A circuit within the methane transducer detects whether the sensing element is shorted or open. A high signal (approximately 8 Vdc) on the failure output Indicates the sensor element is operating In Its normal range. A low output (less than 1 Vdc) indicates an element fault. The several commodity and area chapters contain further details on production. A summary table comparing world and U.S. mineral production also is included. Mineral production may be measured at any of several stages of extraction and processing. The stage of measurement used in the chapter is normally what is termed "mine output." It usually refers to minerals in the form in which they are first extracted from the ground, but customarily includes for some minerals the product of auxiliary processing operations at or near mines.
