The Bureau of Mines, U.S. Department of the Interior, in cooperation with the Department of Energy, has attempted to increase the activity of nickel catalysts for converting synthesis gas, derived from coal, to a substitute natural gas. This report describes the effects of low-level additions of B, Ca, Ce, Co, Mn, Mo, Pd, Re, Ti, Y, Zn, and Zr on the methanation activity of Raney nickel. The methanation rate at 320° C and the resistance to poisoning by 2 ppm H2S were used to compare catalysts. The effects of the additions were small, and the experimental variances were large, necessitating the use of statistical methods to identify significant effects. Co, Ti, Y, and Zn improved the resistance to H2S poisoning, but only Co improved the methanation rate In some individual catalysts containing Ca, Mo, or Mn, both the methanation rate and resistance to H2S poisoning were improved.

"INTRODUCTION The brown-iron ores of the Western Highland Rim of Tennessee extend north and south across the State for 115 miles. Many prospects of iron ore are known in this area.The district is credited with an output of 8 million tons of washed ore prior to 1930. Records on past shipments of ore indicates that the grade was probably 45 to 50 percent iron, 0,7 to 1.25 percent phosphorus, and 10 to 21 percent insoluble.As part of a survey of the iron resources of the Appalachian area, the Bureau of Manes began exploration .of the Churchwell and Robinette properties April 16, 1945, and continued until July 25, 1945, during which time 122 feet of test pits were sunk and 667 feet of churn drilling was completedPROPERTY AND ACCESSThe Churchweil property and that part of the Robinette tract north of U. S. Highway 64 are reported to be owned by the heirs of William Millsaps.The Churchwell property is northeast of Waynesboro, the county seat of Wayne County (fig. 1), and is east of Forty-Eight Creek, between Duggar Branch on the north and Little Forty-Eight Creek on the south.The property is reached from Waynesboro by traveling U. S. Highway 64 east 8 miles to Forty-Eight Creek, thence north on a secondary road 2 miles, to where Little Forty-Eight Creek joins it, thence by an old logging road up the hill half a mile to the property.The Robinett tract lies 1 mile southeast of the Churchwell and is reached by traveling east from Waynesboro on U. S. Highway 64 and a distance of 6.7 miles, and then turning left on an old logging road and following the ridge 2 miles to the prospect."

Ground penetrating radar (GPR) has been investigated by the U.S. Bureau of Mines Pittsburgh Research Center for its potential to determine rod hazards in underground mines. GPR surveys were conducted at four field sites with accompanying ground truth to determine the value of GPR for roof hazard detection. The resolution of the current systems allows detection of gross roof fractures (>6A mm (>0.25 in) zone) or rider beds in coal measure roof. Data quality is not yet sufficient to detect small bed separations or subtle lithologics changes in the roof. Differences in data quality are discussed, as well as suggestion for collecting improved data.

Demand for energy in the United States in 1965 was stimulated by the continuing expansion of the economy. A gain of 5.9 percent in gross national product for the year was accompanied by a 4.4-percent rise in energy consumption. Domestic energy resources met about 93 percent of the nation's requirements. The remaining 7 percent consisted of imported fuels, mainly of crude petroleum and residual fuel oil. The major fossil fuels-natural gas, crude petroleum, and coal, in that order-contributed 96 percent of all commerical energy utilized, with the balance of 4 percent being primary electricity from hydropower and nuclear power plants. Production was up for all of the major mineral energy resources in 1965, with the single exception of anthracite, output of which continued to decline. Bituminous coal output for the year was 512 million tons; marketed production of natural gas, 16,039 billion cubic feet; and crude petroleum output, 2,848 million barrels. Among the secondary products processed from primary energy resources, the most significant gains were in coal carbonized for coke which increased 6.7 percent to 95 million tons, and in the output of liquefied gases from natural gas which rose 4.8 percent to 11,257 million gallons (268 million barrels). Within the latter category, the off? take for petrochemical feedstocks continued to rise at a very rapid pace.

The Bureau of Mines in its safety work has for a number of years advocated and recommended the use of permissible portable electric cap lamps for use in all mines. In the course of time required for the evolution from an unsatisfactory to an efficient and safe light, but encouraging increase in their use has been experienced in Alabama. As early as 1916, small installations of these safer lamps were made or an experimental basis by several operating companies, and the first complete mine installation eras made at the Virginia mine of the Gulf States Steel Co., July 1, 1918. From the experiments in 1316 and the complete equipment of the first mine in 1918 gradual progress has been made until there are now 30 installations with 10 operating companies; as a result 20 mines have been put entirely and 5 partly on, closed lights, and 3 companies equip their engineering departments; two installations of closed lights are maintained by other companies for emergency use. One of the mines partly on the electric cap lamp is an ore mine - the only one in Alabama (and one of the very few in the United States) that uses closed lights. Because of the extreme interest in materials with high melting temperatures and the advantages offered over the powder route for making high-density material, arc-melting and centrifugal-casting methods were investigated for preparing shapes of hafnium carbide with and without excess carbon. Highly satisfactory equipment was constructed and efficient operating procedures were established. Also, methods for preparing consumable electrodes and shrink-tolerant graphite molds were developed. Although crack-free hafnium carbide (6.3 weight-percent carbon) shapes were not made, coherent castings containing 9 to 13.5 weight-percent carbon were produced; the same compositions were shown to be resistant to thermal shock. Selected physical and chemical tests were performed on castings chosen for investigation by chemical and nondestructive inspection techniques. Electrical conductivity and thermal expansion measurements were made. Measurable oxidation of all the compositions studied was observed to start between 500° and 600° C. Attack by nitrogen, however, did not occur until temperatures exceeded 2,000° C. A linear relationship of the logarithm of the diamond pyramid hardness to the temperature was noted. Considerable scatter of the bend-rupture strengths at room temperature and of the tensile strengths up to 2,000° C was found. However, at the latter temperature and above, a definite relationship of strength to temperature was observed and some ductility was noted.

THE MINERAL INDUSTRIES had a near-record year in 1950, as rising industrial activity in general, greatly accentuated by the outbreak of hostilities in Korea in midyear, called forth increasing supplies of mineral fuels and raw materials. The aggregate value of mineral production was second only to that in 1948, and the aggregate physical volume was exceeded only in 1948 and 1947. Lower coal production accounted for the failure to surpass these earlier years. Growth of production was fairly constant throughout the year, especially for crude petroleum; its physical output for the year as a whole exceeded that of 1949 by 7 percent. According to Federal Reserve Board indexes, other relative gains were 16 percent for coal, 9 percent for fuels in general, and 17 percent for metals. The increase for mining in general was of the order of 10 percent. This was not quite as large as the general increase in industrial production but clearly reflected the total-industrial trend (see fig. 1).

As a part of its overall program of coal carbonization, the Bureau of Mines is studying the coking properties of coals that may be used for metallurgical purposes. The objectives of this study were given in detail in a previous report.2/ The inherent suitability of coal for metallurgical use depends primarily on (1) chemical composition, (2) preparation characteristics, and (3) carbonization behavior. The first two factors, as well as the available reserves, are considered in selecting coals for carbonization tests.

"A recent premature explosion in a quarry that resulted in the death of nine men and the injury of several others, was directly traceable to a spark from a steam-shovel working under the face directly in front of the hole being loaded. This accident and similar accidents on record in the Bureau of Mines indicates the necessity for pointing out the dangers in quarries of explosives being ignited by sparks emitted from steam shovels and locomotives, and making recommendations for greater safety.Many premature explosions of which the following are examples, have resulted from sparks, both from steam shovels and passing locomotives. (A) The premature explosion occurred during August, 1920 at a limestone quarry, in a 100-foot drill hole, loaded with 1000 pounds of high-grade nitroglycerin and gelatin dynamites. This hole had been loaded with 500 pounds of 75 per cent strength gelatin dynamite, 300 pounds of 60 per cent straight nitroglycerin dynamite, and 200 pounds of 50 per cent straight nitro¬glycerin dynamite; but no steaming had been placed in the hole. The powderman loading the hole saw the spark enter the hole and was able to run a short distance before the explosion took place, thus escaping serious injury. The explosion of this first hole was transmitted to nearby hole similarly charged. The fall of rocks from these two holes buried the steam shovel and some of the gang of men working around it.(B) In September, 1909, in the Canal Zone, a steam shovel uncovered a misfired charge of dynamite. While the dynamite was being picked up the steam shovel continued working nearby. A spark from the shovel set fire to some loose dynamite spilled on the ground from the troken cartridges. This fire was transmitted to a hole which was being loaded close by and caused a premature explosion. One man was injured."

The following is a description of the methods employed at the Eureka-Asteroid mine, which is situated on the Gogebic range, at Ramsey, Mich. The mime is operated by the Castile Mining Co. under the direction of Oglebay Norton & Co. This paper has been prepared in accordance with an outline furbished by the United States Bureau of Mines, and in one of a series, on mining methods and costs covering the principal minim operations throughout the United States. This report supplements an earlier publication on lightweight aggregates of North and South Dakota.3/ The purpose of the investigation was (1) to study the expansion characteristics of large samples of Dakota clays and shales in a 12-inch by 15-foot rotary kiln; and (2) to improve the laboratory bloating test as a tool for predicting the suitability of samples for the rotary-kiln process. This was done by comparing results of the laboratory and kiln tests.

The Bureau of Mines and many member companies of the Industrial Sand Association have been working in several areas to reduce personal exposure to respirable dust. Areas investigated include ventilation, modification of hardware, moisture addition to the product, and improved housekeeping practices. Ventilation systems have been devised and shown to contain 100 pct of a tracer gas released within the hood. An industrial clean air island has been developed and shown to reduce dust levels 90 pct at the opera- tor's position, Modification of hardware on a bag filling machine has been demonstrated to reduce dust 83 pct at the machine operator's lapel. This particular development has been termed a significant advancement in the state-of-the-art of bag filling by industry representatives. Addition of moisture to dried product materials has been tested with results showing dust reductions of 90 pct are possible!, Control of the moisture addition method still needs refinement and costs may be prohibitive. Dust sampling results clearly show the benefits of housekeeping practices such as building cleaning and vacuum sweeping. Rotation of work schedules is also effective for reducing personal exposure.

"Stoppings in coal mines serve, important and. vital functions, such as coursing the ventilating current, sealing off abandoned or dangerous workings, sealing fire areas, and separating mines at boundaries. Stoppings may hold back water, but normally that is not their function; their design is, or should be very different from that of a hydraulic dap which is designed to a definite load, often a very heavy one, from one direction over an indefinitely long period. Hence, a dam usually requires an arched structure to resist hydraulic pressure, and it must be massive to meet vertical stresses due to heavy ground pressure.Stoppings are designed primarily to resist a pressure applied laterally through air or gases. Their strength cannot be stated without specifying the direction of applied load. A stopping may be placed in stress by proof pressure subsequent to erection, through extraction of pillars in the vicinity which may act direct, or by squeezing the ribs or heaving the floor. These forces act more or less parallel to the faces of the stopping and may be very great but measures must be taken suitable to each case, and it is impossible to allow for these in general specifications other than to call for normally good construction. A stopping is principally designed to resist the action of forces at right angles to its face, such as the shocks of blasting, the pressure of gas from instantaneous violent out bursts such as have occurred in certain British Columbia coal mines, sudden compression of the air by great falls of roof in closed spaces, and at time pressures that accompany an explosion of either fire damp or coal dust or both. This paper deals with the tests of pressures of explosions only."

During the 20th century, the increased emphasis on worker health and safety and the advent of new mining equipment and methods led to many changes in mine face ventilation practices. Efforts by government and private industry to improve and modify ventilation practices resulted in better health and safety conditions for workers. This article focuses on U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) and National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) research to examine factors that had a significant influence on mine face ventilation design during the past century. Several "milestone" events are discussed along with the impact they had on worker health and safety. Significant ventilation research efforts by government and private industry are presented. This brief ventilation history highlights innovative face ventilation designs and a consistent commitment to mining health and safety. Ventilation has always been a concern in underground coal mining. For many yeas, there was no appreciation of how ventilation could be used to remove harmful contaminants from the air or how to control airflow quantities. The first known problems with ventilation date back to the 14th century, when it was recognized that lack of air was a major impediment to the expansion of mines. The common method of solving ventilation problems at that time was to abandon the existing mine and start a new one nearby. Ventilation in the early days of coal mining was accomplished by means of a natural draft, created principally by a difference in the weights of columns of air between the intake and return openings. Later, in the 18th and 19th centuries, a furnace was introduced underground to increase the updraft in the return shaft. This allowed for a larger quantity of air in circulation. When mines went deeper and became larger, mechanical ventilation became necessary and was first accomplished by steam-driven fans. These fans became more prevalent as furnaces were prohibited in underground mines, especially after the Avondale disaster in Pennsylvania in 1869 (Roy, 1876). In 1988, at the request of the U.S. Bureau of Land Management, the U.S. Bureau of Mines studied the 5,640-acre Soda Mountain Wilderness Study Area (OR-011-017), in order to evaluate its identified mineral resources. The study area is located in Jackson County, OR, about 30 miles south-east of Medford. The study area covers most of the south-facing slope of 6,071-ft Soda Mountain. Geologically, the area is underlain by Oligocene to Pliocene basaltic andesite flows and less extensive intrusive rocks of the western Cascade Mountains. In addition, there is a 3/4-mile-diameter area of kaolinized and silicified rhyolite tuff, which appears to have intruded the andesite, and is host to epithermal gold mineralization.

If resin-grouted roof bolts are not installed correctly, mine roof reinforcement can be affected, and roof falls can result. A bolt installation variable that is readily controlled by the mine operator is annulus thickness. The objective of this U. S. Bureau of Mines investigation was to study the effect of annulus thickness variations on the integrity of 3/4-in-diam resin-grouted bolts. Forged-head test bolts, 2 and 1 ft long, were installed in concrete blocks that had been drilled with 1-, 1-1/8-, 1-1/4-, 1-3/8-, and 1-1/2-in-diam bits. Standard pull tests were performed; then the concrete was broken away from the bolts so that grout mix quality could be inspected. It was found that the optimum annulus thickness is 1/8-in (l-in-diam drill hole), and as annulus thickness increases from the optimum, there is a corresponding decrease in grout mix quality, effective grout ratio, and axial stiffness.

All the coal lands in Alaska are publicly owned, and the Federal Government is the principal consumer of coal. Therefore the Government has long been concerned with the wise utilization of the coal reserves of Alaska as well as with the availability of coals meeting the specifications for use in various Government installations. Coal preparation plays a key role in both of these areas of interest. The proper choice and operation of coal-washing equipment permits the mining of inferior deposits, minimizes waste of coal in preparation, and assures a prepared product of the best quality obtainable from the raw coal. Thus, from time to time, the Bureau of Mines has made washability examinations on most of the coals mined in Alaska. Generally, these examinations were made when new mines or new beds were opened, when construction of new preparation plants was being considered, or when the operation of existing plants could be improved by better knowledge of the raw coal. The purpose of this report is to bring together all the washability data available on the coals of the Matanuska Valley and Beluga River fields. The pattern of energy development for the rapidly growing Anchorage area is not clear at this time. Formerly coal was the only fuel available for large-scale space heating and power generation. More recently both oil and natural gas have entered the market, and several hydroelectric projects have been completed. Additional major hydroelectric projects are being considered. The role that will be played by coal in this competitive energy market is uncertain. However I if coal is the fuel used in future power plants or industrial installations, the information contained in this report will be useful in indicating the quality of the coals that can be supplied and in selecting proper preparation techniques.

This report deals with information regarding a new Medium Frequency (MF) Wireless Communication System for underground mines. This new telecommunication system works on low loss electromagnetic wave propagation modes which allow it to provide quality radio communications almost anywhere in a mine. Tests show the MF system can provide improved safety and managerial control, increased productivity, better organizational team-work and reduced maintenance cost; furthermore, MF's unique design allows for easy installation at a minimum cost. This paper covers the following: 1) MF design plan, 2) Overview of mine radio communications systems, 3) Preparations needed for designing an MF system, 4) MF equipment, 5) MF installation, 6) MF design considerations, 7) MF design specifica¬tions, and 8) Recommendations dealing with MF system. Experiments in four mines are illustrated to demonstrate the success and via¬bility of the MF system. The mines range from small (500 tons/day) to large (67,000 tons/day) capacity and represent several different mining methods. The MF Wireless Communication System represents an advancement in mining communication and the groundwork for other advanced mine systems.

The computer program XRF4 was designed by the Bureau of Mines to provide for the calculation of several different interelement correction procedures in X-ray fluorescence analysis, including Lachance-Traill, Rasberry-Heinrich, and Claisse-Quintin procedures. The program was written in the BASIC language for timesharing application, and a conversational interaction with the computer is employed during operation. This report presents test problems using data for iron-nickel-chromium alloys and aluminum alloys and directions for use of the program.
