A stick of explosive is a package of stored energy that can be released when needed to blast rocks, coal, and other materials; but, unlike fuels such as coal and gasoline, its potential energy is self-contained, there being enough oxygen within the package to complete the almost instantaneous reaction. When an explosive is ignited or detonated, the solid or liquid materials of which it is composed are converted rapidly into highly heated gases, which, if free to expand, would have a volume many times larger than that of the original explosive. At the instant of explosion these gases occupy only the volume of the shot hole and are therefore produced at a very high pressure, which causes the material that is being blasted to be broken or disrupted. In blasting coal efficiently the proper placement of the shot hole and the confinement of the explosive therein are both of prime importance. When these are not adjusted properly, only a small amount of the energy is expended in bringing down coal, consequently the balance of the energy tends to be expended by the emission of a flame into the working place that may lead to a gas or dust explosion. Permissible Explosives Defined The term "permissible explosive", as applied by the Bureau of Mines to explosives it has approved for use in blasting in coal mines, embraces not only the requirement that the explosive, when used, shall be similar in all respects to the basic sample that passed all the tests necessary for its admission to the published permissible list, but also that the explosive shall be used under certain prescribed requirements.

Longwall roof behavior is characterized by strata displacements in both the face-to-waste (horizontal) and roof-to-f1oor (vertical) direc-tions. The roof support structure provides resistance to this motion by translation of these displacements into vertical and horizontal support loading. Observations indicate that the shield reacts with both a vertical and horizontal force to uniaxial convergence (displacement). However, there are different magnitudes depending on whether the displacement is vertical or horizontal. This makes it possible to use supports as monitors of strata activity and loading. The Bureau of Mines examined this behavior using a linear elastic model of the support structure with two degrees of freedom. Vertical and horizontal load reactions were related to associated displacement actions of the strata. This was done by determining the stiffness of the shield under controlled vertical and horizontal displacement motions in the Bureau's mine roof simulator. This report provides example predictions of strata convergence and isolation of horizontal support loading due to vertical roof convergence using the linear elastic shield model. The report also examines efforts to determine strata behavior by direct measurement of support displacement.

The program objective was to conduct surveys of respirable dust concentrations in coal mining operations at locations outby the working face. The results of these surveys were directed toward 1. identifying outby dust sources, 2. evaluating the severity of the major dust sources, 3. establishing dust sampling frequency, 4. establishing dust sampler locations, and 5. assessing the? areas of influence of the dust sources. The study included dust sampling of only nonhigh risk personnel and areas at six dif-ferent mines. Thirteen continuous mining, four longwall and two conventional mining sections were sampled. The severity of outby respirable dust sources such as load points, runways, dump points, beltways, transfer points and main haulage operations were characterized and areas within the mine were ranked according to severity. Information on engineering controls was also acquired. Guidelines for implementing a dust sampling program are presented and include sampler locations, ventilation surveys, dust surveys, effects of shift-to-shift variations, and sampling frequency.

Gas occurs in coalbeds in an adsorbed and a free gas state. Adsorbed gas is stored in the micropore structure and its transport is governed by Fick's law. The free gas occurs in the fracture system and flows according to Darcy's law. These two modes of mass transport are interdependent. Production decline curves of coal-gas wells are of the constant percentage decline type and, thus, show no indications of flow characteristics peculiar to coal-gas reservoirs. The effectiveness of surface boreholes as a degasification scheme depends upon both good fracture permeability and a high fracture density. Conventional methods of reservoir engineering analysis are not applicable to coalbeds

The diamond-drill method was tried at the site selected for driving a 5- by 6 -foot air shaft at the east end of the Bellefonte mine . This method of sinking consisted , first , of drilling a 5-3/4 -inch-diameter cut hole from the surface , then drilling parallel 1.5 - inch ( EX ) holes around it at appropriate distances for a balanced blasting round . The cut hole was not charged with explosive but served as a relief chamber for the incipient expansion of the ground broken by. blasting the surrounding 1.5 - inch holes . The length of each hole was 236 feet , which was the finished depth of the shaft . The nature of the work in the air shaft was largely experimental , and many difficulties arising from the lack of special equipment and proper technique for precise alinement of the drill holes caused expensive delays before they could be overcome . Drilling the 5-3 /4 - inch hole , which was impeded by frequent core blocks in the core barrel , required 10 shifts . average advance per shift for an EX hole was about 150 feet . The The holes were charged and fired from the surface . The length of the section blasted in one cycle was 10 feet . Blasting progressed from the bottom of the shaft upward . The broken stone dropped into a chute , from which it was drawn into cars on the haulage level . The Bellefonte mine is an underground limestone mine.3/ The primary objective in undertaking the research on shaft sinking by diamond drilling was to perfect a method for driving connections between levels of the mine .

As part of an investigation of the production of alumina by the nitric acid leaching of kaolinitic clay, the Bureau of Mines designed, built, and tested a fluidized-bed system for the calcination of aluminum nitrate nonahydrate to alumina, while recovering nitric acid. The calciner consisted of an 8-in-square by 36-in-tall vessel containing 18 in of fluidized solids. Molten aluminum nitrate, sprayed directly into the fluidized solids, formed sandy, granular alumina by growth of successive layers on fluidized particles. Solids were fluidized in a dense bed at temperatures of 250° to 500° C with steam, air, or mixtures thereof. Decomposition of nitrate ranged from 4 to 10 pet during single-pass steam or air fluidization, respectively. Alumina dust losses and low throughput are significant unsolved problem areas.

A list of permissible mine equipment approved by the Bureau of Mines before January 1, 1937, was published in Bureau of Mines Information Circular 6942.3/ Information Circular 7007,4/ published as a supplement thereto, listed equipment approved. Burin', the calendar year 1937. The present list includes most of the material liven in these two publications, as well as approvals that have been issued up to January l, 1940. Some equipment formerly listed has been omitted because it has become obsolete or is no longer actively marketed. The list now includes electrically-operated air compressors, coal drills, loading machines and conveyors, mining machine, mine ones, rock-dusting machines, room hoists, storage-battery gathering and haulage locomotives and storage-battery power trucks, mine telephones, junction boxes, electric cap lamps, flame safety lamps, electric hand and trip lamps, electric flood lens, flashlights, methane detectors, and single and multiple-shot blasting units. The appendix at the end of this circular lists trailing, cables that have passed tests prescribed by Schedule 2D. When equipment passes the inspections and tests prescribed by the United Status Department of the interior, Bureau of Mines, in published "schedules" or standards, it is formally approved as "permissible" for use in gassy mines, and the manufacturer is then permitted to mark it with an approval plate that identifies it as having been approved by the Bureau. The inspections and tests are designed to insure that each equipment satisfies the minimum requirements for safety in use. Detailed comprehensive assessment of the performance of Afghanistan's mineral industry during 1987 is virtually impossible, owing to the paucity of reliable published information. It was evident, however, that the level of civil disorder, now in its eighth year since the arrival of significant numbers of Soviet troops, was in actuality little removed from open civil war. Insurgents controlled substantial areas of the country and imperiled any industrial activity in many places. Assistance programs by the U.S.S.R. and other Eastern European nations were directed at developing the country's meager mineral industry, but the economy was generally viewed as chaotic. The inflation rate was somewhere between 20% and 30%; major food shortages contributed to the discontent of the population, and numerous villages were devastated by Soviet and Afghan Government campaigns to destroy the insurgents and cut their supply routes. Moreover, proposals by the Soviets and the Kabul Government aimed at reducing tensions with the rebels and scaling down the warfare seemingly were taken by the opposition as signs of weakening by the Soviet-backed Government, and rather than reducing aggressions, seemed to heighten insurrectionist activities. Efforts to entice the substantial number of Afghans who have fled to nearby areas of Pakistan and Iran to return to their country seemingly were failures, and indications near yearend that the Soviet Union might soon begin withdrawal of its occupation force of nearly 120,000 did little if any to reduce disorder.

The Bureau of Mines has devised technology to recover cobalt, nickel, and byproduct copper from domestic lateritic material using an oxidative, ammoniacal ammonium sulfate leach. Nickel, cobalt, and copper were recovered by solvent extraction and electrowinning. To reduce the cost and complexity of cobalt recovery, an alternate method using lig-nite to extract Co3+ was investigated as reported herein. In the first 25 BV (bed volumes) of solution contacted with lignite, 97 wt pct of the Co3+ was extracted in & downflow column at pH 9.3. After 85 BV, the lignite was loaded to 1.5 wt pct Co3+ and further ex-traction was minimal. The lignite extracted cobaltic ammine complexes rather than cobalt ions and was nonselective as to other -metal cations and ammonium ions. Deleterious cations and 80 wt pct of the nonammine ammonium ions were removed prior to acid elution of the lignite. The removal of the ammines prior to elution to produce an ammonium-ion-freeCo3+ eluate was only partially successful. Thus Co3+ removal from ammoniacal solutions by lignite is technically difficult and economically unfeasible. It was also determined that reduction of Co3+ to Co2+ occurred during the extraction-elution process.

"Natural gas-gasoline is made by collecting in the liquid state the condensable hydrocarbon vapors that exist in different natural gases in varying amounts. In the richer type of natural gas the gasoline is generally recovered by compression and cooling. If exceedingly high pressure or low temperature is used, there is dissolved in the gasoline a large amount of very volatile material, which evaporates rapidly at atmospheric temperature and pressure.In the leaner type of natural gas, the gasoline vapors are selectively absorbed from the permanent gases by passing the natural gas through an absorbing oil. The gasoline is recovered by distilling the saturated oil, and as compared with ""compression"" gasoline is of high Baume' gravity and low vapor pressure. Before a volatile gasoline can be transported in tank cars, it is necessary to decrease its volatility in order to lessen the risk of fire or explosion, as well as to prevent excessive evaporation in transit. This can be accomplished either by weathering the gasoline, or by blending it with a more stable material, naphtha being commonly used in the weathering process the more volatile portions of the gasoline are allowed to evaporate and the losses in volume are very large, therefore, blending is preferable, wherever possible.It is very difficult, however, to produce by blending, in gasoline plants, a motor fuel which is equal to straight-run refinery gasoline. In order to make a blended motor fuel of a grade equal to straight-run gasoline, only a small percentage of natural gas-gasoline can be blended with the naphtha, consequently it is customary to blend the gasoline with only enough naphtha to enable It to be shipped to an oil refinery when the material is again blended to form a finished motor fuel."

This report presents the results of a study of gas injection in the Upper and Lower Terminal zones in fault block VB and in the Upper Terminal zone in fault block VI, Wilmington field, California. This report is based on data obtained to January 1956. Earlier studies of gas injection in other California fields have been reported .3/ The Upper and Lower Terminal zones, fault block VB, have been producing oil since 1945 and the Upper Terminal zone, fault block VI, since 1948. Before starting the gas-injection project, the expansion of dissolved gas was the principal mechanism moving the oil to the wells. Gravity drainage and an edgewater drive also have contributed to the movement of the oil to the wells. When the gas injection was begun, the reservoir pressure and the oil production had declined appreciably. Gas injection was started in the Upper and Lower Terminal zones, fault block VB, in May 1953 and in the Upper Terminal zone, fault block VI, in October 1953.

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, Pittsburgh Research Laboratory, conducted a study of past mine explosions to identify the ignition locations and ignition sources responsible for the most severe explosion events resulting in death. Since the Scotia disaster of 1976, many fatalities from underground coal mine explosions have been linked to nonpermissible electrical equipment ignition sources located in intake air courses. With few exceptions, explosion protected equipment is generally not required in intake air courses of gassy underground coal mines in the US. Cigarette lighters were another prevalent ignition source for fatal explosions ignited in intake air courses. Several mine rescue/ recovery teams have encountered electrical ignition hazards. The study provides evidence that intake air courses of gassy underground coal mines fit the description of certain Hazardous (classified) locations described in the US National Electrical Code®. Class I Division 2 or Zone 2 explosion protection tech¬niques may be used to design intake air equipment so that it does not present an ignition source under normal operation, before mine power is shut down in emergency situations. Nonpermissible circuits in intake air courses that are likely to remain energized during emergencies, e.g. battery powered equipment, should be protected by more stringent Class I Division 1, Zone 1, or Zone 0 techniques, to protect rescue/recovery personnel.

Metals From Oil Shale. -A Geological Survey News Release in mid-January indicated that a surface sample analysis of oil shale in central Montana found a ton of shale to contain up to 13 pounds of zinc, 2 pounds of nickel, 1.8 pounds of molybdenum, 16 pounds of vanadium oxide, and nearly a quarter pound of selenium. It might be possible to recover some of these metals economically on a byproduct basis. The shale in central Montana was also estimated to contain 180 billion barrels of synthetic crude oil, which compares to estimated oil reserves in the Middle East of 360 billion barrels. Merchant Fleet Dwindles. -The National Maritime Council reports that although the U.S. is the world's largest trading power and that well over 90% of its foreign trade is conducted by shipping, the U.S. fleet is tenth in absolute numbers and less than 5% of its foreign trade is carried on U.S. ships. In 30 years, the U.S. fleet has dwindled from over 4,000 oceangoing vessels to about 600. U.S. ships carry less than 2% of imported iron ore, bauxite, and tungsten, and only 3% of oil imports.

The Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969 has dictated major changes in mine ventilation with regard to both air quantity and quality. Requirements have also been placed on the ventilation of beltlines, gob and face areas, and air velocities on trolley haulage roads are limited. Escapeways, separate from trolley haulage roads and on an intake split of air, must be maintained continuous to the surface. These and other similar requirements have not only precipitated several modifications to existing ventilation systems but also have greatly increased the complexities of new mine ventilation planning. It is apparent that the use of computers in ventilation system analysis and design is a necessity. SUMMARY Although computer oriented analysis of mine ventilation systems was introduced over two decades ago, it has yet to receive widespread acceptance in the United States. Central to this problem is the fact that, while many computer programs for network analysis have been developed, no attention has been paid to the development of computer input data. Consequently, without this foundation, program applications have been infrequent. This thesis has directly attacked this problem and has presented all pertinent information basic to the development of good computer input data. The areas that were covered include quantity measurement, pressure measurement, fan testing, survey data balancing, and the development of a network schematic from the ventilation survey results. These discussions on data collection and the corresponding reduction to computer coding have been illustrated by an application of a ventilation simulation program to an existing mine in Southwestern Pennsylvania. "INTRODCJCTIONAlveolar macrophages are free lung cells located on the surface of small airways and alveoli. These phagocytes play an important role in the protection of the lung against airborne bacteria and particles.1 However, hyperactivation of pulmonary phagocytes can lead to excessive secretion of enzymes and reactive oxygen species which could result in lung injury, emphysema, or fibrosis.2,3 Analysis of bronchoalveolar lavage effluents for cell types and cellular activity has yielded information concerning the etiology of various pneumoconioses. For example, emphysema associated with inhalation of coal dust or cigarette smoke has been related to enhanced secretion of reactive oxygen species from alveolar macrophages.4-7 In contrast, hypoactivation of alveolar macrophages has been associated with inhalation of diesel particulates"" and has been related to increased susceptibility to pulmonary infection. s Inhalation of cotton dust has been associated with dramatic increases in lavagable polymorphonuclear leukocytes9 while pulmonary sarcoidosis and silicosis have been related with high numbers of lymphocytes in lavage effluentsl0,11The objective of the present study was to obtain lavage effluents from 8 control subjects, 8 healthy power plant workers exposed to fly ash, 1 healthy coal miner, and 1 rock driller with acute silicosis. These effluents were analyzed for total numbers of alveolar macrophages, lymphocytes and neutrophils and for secretory activity of alveolar macrophages. Data were then analyzed to determine what response patterns were characteristic for given dust exposures.METHODSSelection of SubjectsThe 8 control subjectS were all adult males from the area of Morgantown, WV. Two subjects among the controls had smoked cigarettes for approximately three pack-years and had stopped more than ten years ago. The 8 power plant :workers were all healthy adult male employees of a power facility in Hatfield, PA, approximately thirty miles from Morgantown. One of the power plant personnel was a comparable ex-smoker. The remaining subjects were all lifelong non-smokers. The coal miner was a healthy non-smoking male from Morgantown, WV. The rock driller was a patient under treatment with corticosteroids for acute silicosis. He had shown considerable clinical improvement with this treatment but still manifested significant radiologic and pulmonary functional abnonnalities at the time of lavage. The mean age of the 8 control subjects was 36 years (range: 31 to 49 years); the mean age of the remaining subjects studied was 38 years (range: 29 to 53 years)."

The Bureau of Mines conducted laboratory-scale flammability experiments to investigate the possible use of water spray systems for inerting or quenching mine-gas ignitions, such as those encountered at the working face of a coal mine. The inerting results for premixed methane-air-water mixtures indicated that water droplets of less than 10 µm tend to be as effective as the vapor. Water requirements for inerting such mixtures were much smaller than those for quenching the sustained flame propagation by the application of water sprays. The minimum water mass concentration for quenching methane-air flames increased linearly with increasing droplet diameter (surface weighted mean) and decreased with increasing spray temperature, whereas the droplet surface area required per unit volume was essentially constant for a given gas mixture composition. Data extrapolations indicated that a quenching system may be feasible for the longwall mining application.

The Bureau of Mines air-sealed a 77-acre) above-drainage coal mine to evaluate sealing as a means of reducing the acid and metallic salt contents in drainage from abandoned mines. An approximate reduction in acidity of 150 ppm (equivalent to 193 pounds per day) and in iron of 98 ppm were directly attributed to sealing. The topographical, hydrological, and other factors involved in air-sealing are discussed, and the construction used to seal the mine is described.

This publication describes further research by the Federal Bureau of Mines in beneficiating domestic manganese ores. The ores selected for treatment were typical of many manganese deposits in California and Nevada in that they have not been economical to mine because they are low grade or contaminated with siliceous minerals and are not amenable to physical concentration.3 4/ It would be desirable to develop a simple treatment method resulting in nearly complete extraction of manganese from these ores and applicable to small-scale operations. Sulfation reduction appeared to be such a method. The studies reported in this publication were directed toward sawdust or lignin-sulfonates as reducing agents. Sawdust, as waste from lumbering, and lignin-sulfonates, byproducts of woodpulp papermaking, are comparatively cheap and may be available in areas where manganese ores are found. Sugar, oils, and coal were also tried as reducing agents.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines conducted a study to evaluate the effect of underground mining conditions on the activation of automatic sprinkler heads. Sprinklers were exposed to liquid fuel fires in a rectangular tunnel at airflows of 0, 45, 90, 150, and 250 m/min to determine the effect of ventilation and fire size on the time to activation. As the airflows were increased, the time to activate the sprinklers for a given fire size increased. Also, as the fire size increased, the activation time decreased. Temperature profiles of the tunnel showed that the maximum temperature near the roof was shifted downstream as the airflow increased. Experiments to determine the effect of rated activation temperature and response time index (RTI) value on activation time showed that the time to activate increased with increasing activation temperature, and decreased with decreasing RTI value. Exposure to the mine environment showed little effect on the activation times in large-scale experiments, and no significant effect in laboratory experiments. The results showed that airflow can have a significant effect on the activation times of automatic sprinklers. This needs to be considered in the design of effective sprinkler suppression systems for ventilated areas.
