Horizontal stresses are caused by global plate-tectonic forces. During 1995 alone they were largely responsible for the closing of two longwall mines in the United States. This paper presents six case histories from Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Kentucky and Alabama. In each case, a mine encountered roof falls or difficult ground conditions at the headgate caused by horizontal-stress concentrations. The problems are detailed, and the control measures adopted are described. In most cases, nearby longwall panels without stress concentrations were trouble free. The paper also discusses detailed measurements that were made at two adjacent Pennsylvania longwalls. One headgate was oriented to avoid a horizontal-stress concentration, and the other was not. Eliminating the stress concentration dramatically reduced roof support loads and roof deformation. The paper concludes that proper panel orientation and sequence is the key to maintaining headgate ground control. The optimum orientation is not parallel to the maximum horizontal stress, as previously thought, but rather it is 20° in the stress shadow of the gob. Other stress-control techniques, including artificial support, are briefly discussed.

An experiment was conducted by the U.S. Bureau of Mines and the Canada Centre for Mineral and Energy Technology (CANMET) to measure the emanation rate of radon from cemented unclassified mill tailings in two dewatered stopes of a uranium mine at Elliot Lake, Ontario, Canada. The radon was monitored upstream and downstream and in both stopes to determine the concentration in the stopes and the amount exhausted from both stopes. The emanation rate was determined to be 0.55 pCi/cm2 sec-1 from the mill tailings, which is approximately 1,000 times higher than the average flux in the mine before backfilling.

"IntroductionThe accumulation of gummy and resinous deposits in consumers' gas meters began to assume serious proportions about 1917. As the trouble developed and spread in the years following, it manifested itself in several ways, which ultimately began to the expressible in distinctly economic terms, more specifically in terms of costs; in 1922 an organized and fundamentally based investigation of this trouble was begun. In an earlier paper*** a short statement of the occurrence and costs of the deposition was given and at the same time an analysis of the problem, as well as well as a general plan of attack, was presented. That plan included two general phases, first, a chemical study of typical was 1 quarry or 2 cosinous content , mauformly consituents, rmln and selected subjects; and secondly, a comparative survey of plants affected and sufficient therewith, attention being paid to construction, operation, meter conditions and related data. "SUMMARYThe J. D. Price property is in Crittenden County, Ky., about 5-1/2 miles west of Marion. The Levias-Crittenden Springs fault system traverses the property. Mines on 3 miles of the same fault system immediately northeast have produced about 250,000 tons of fluorspar ore. The Keystone property, adjacent on the northeast, has produced about 150,000 tons of ore. 3/About 1934, lessees, sank a shaft upon the Price property to a depth of 111.5 feet and crosscut from the bottom of the shaft to the principal fault. No ore was found. Later, in 1942-43, they explored the same fault by core-drilling, but this project also was unsuccessful in finding ore.The author visited the property in September 1944, and subsequently the Bureau further explored the property by core-drilling three holes. No ore was found.ACKNOWLEGMENTSIn its program of exploration of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. The explosibility of coal dust has long been recognized by competent investigators as constituting one of the dangers of mining coal and in the use of pulverized coal as a fuel in industrial plants. The Bureau of Mines has carried on extensive series of experiments dealing with this subject, and has not only developed methods for the practical prevention of this danger, but in the, course of these experiments has developed a standard method of determining the relative explosibility of coal dusts and other organic dusts.3 Oil shale contains compounds 'of carbon and hydrogen that are either of a petroleum nature and are strongly ,adsorbed upon the incombustible part of the shale, or else are present in the shale as a compound ("kerogen") which has the property of changing into petroleum-like products when acted upon by heat. The oil shales may contain varying amounts of the organic matter, ranging from a trace to more than 66 per cent, depending upon their richness; therefore, it is important to know whether the dusts formed in mining and handling these oil shales are explosive when mixed with air and if so, to indicate remedial measures. This paper gives the results of explosibility tests of several pulverized oil shale's, selected as being typical of those which in the future may be used in commercial shale-oil production test on a sample of typical Colorado oil shale has been., published in an earlier paper.4

THIS PAPER describing the quarrying, mining, and crushing of gypsum at the Blue Diamond mine, 11 miles from Arden, Nev., on the Union Pacific Railway, is one of a series on gypsum mining being prepared for and published by the Bureau of Mines. These papers are designed to disseminate technical information regarding the methods used. The cost tabulations represent operating expenditures only and not total costs. It is recognized that publication of total production costs might in some instances cause embarrassment to individual producers as well as to the industry as a whole. On the other hand, operating costs are essential to the technical discussion and study of the methods employed. The attention of the reader is specifically called to this differentiation in order that no misunderstanding of the scope of the cost tabulations shall ensue.

This report contains a summary of Phase I and complete results of Phase II portions of a study of geologic factors associated with roof falls in mines on the Pocahontas #3 coal seam in southern West Virginia and southwestern Virginia. Principal objectives of Phase I was the selection of five mines that best portrayed the spectrum of roof and mining conditions and Phase II consisted of a measurement and documentation program for each of the five mines. The documentation measurement program included reconnaissance mapping, detailed mapping, joint measurements and coring roof rock. 1.2 PHASE I RESULTS The results of Phase I consisted of the selection of the following five mines for detailed study: Virginia Pocahontas #3 (Island Creek Coal Company), Bishop (Consolidation Coal Company), Shannon Branch (Allied Chemical Company), Keystone II (Eastern Associated Coal Company) and Macalpine-East Gulf (Westmorelenad Coal Company). In addition, Phase I results, which were based on questionnaire data, indicated that the kind of rock in the roof --gray sandstone, crystallized sandstone, laminated sandstone and shale, grey shale, slickensided shale, and rider seams could be associated with good and bad top areas. Also presence of vertical separations, bolt length, entry and cross-cut width, length and torque on bolts and depth of overburden seemed to be related factors. These data provided a focus for the Phase II measurement program.

"INTRODUCTION The Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with the Federal Geological Survey, explored the Crowell fluorite mine by core drilling in 1945. Claims investigated are in sec. 14, T. 12 S. R. 47 E., M. D. B. & M., in southern rye County, Nev., about 5 miles east of 'Beatty.The twelve holes drilled by the Bureau totaled 3,661 feet. During 1945 the mine operator drove extensive exploration drifts, in part to verify results of the Bureau's work. The drilling program was designed to test for extensions of ore bodies known in the mine.The Crowell mine has shipped Ore to steel plants on the west coast for the past 20 years. During the war this market called for all the fluorite the mine could produce, but previously there were periods when it was difficult to sell ore or concentrates.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSIn its program of exploration of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Nines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. The Bureau of Mines is conducting research on the effects of various established and potential soil-stabilization additives to hydraulic backfill. This initial phase is an evaluation of the effect of inclusion of varying amounts of Portland cement and combinations of cement and a dispersant on the bearing strength of backfill. Results of unconfined compression tests are given for over 200 sample cylinders incorporating a fill material with cement or cement and dispersant. Inclusion of a minor amount of dispersant (0.2 percent by weight) is found to yield a significant increase in strength for 20-to-1 and leaner sand-cement mixes. An apparent optimum concentration of dispersant exists beyond which no further increase in strength is achieved. A dispersant-cement ratio of l.8- to-1 yielded a strength increase of 515 percent over the strength of untreated 40-to-l sand-cement mixes.

The object of the research described in this paper was to investigate the effect of metallurgical and surface treatments on the corrosion behavior of arc-melted reactor-grade zirconium in cupric or ferric chloride solutions. An apparatus was constructed and specimens of various metallurgical conditions and surface treatments were tested for 6 days at 35° C., with aeration. Some correlations were observed between corrosion rate and the metal's condition and treatment, Specifically, the unattacked or least attacked specimens were those that had been etched as a final treatment before testing. The most severely attacked specimens were those that had been vacuum-annealed as a final treatment before testing. The moderately attacked specimens were those neither vacuum-annealed nor etched, but having a final surface treatment which left a cold-worked surface. Attack by cupric and ferric chloride was by pit- ting with no preference for grain boundaries, The corrosion scale was cow posed predominately of very fine zirconim particles, Particles from the FeC1,-corroded specimens were more pyrophoric than those from CuCl2-corroded specimens, and appeared to have a higher surface area to volume ratio. Comparison of results to those of previous investigators showed that at certain salt concentrations the more pure, reactor-grade zirconium was quite resistant to attack while the less pure, graphite-melted zirconium was severely attacked.

A geologic study of Mines 32 and 33 in Cambria County, Pa., was conducted as part of a methane control research program. Areas of high methane emission and roof instability are encountered which are related to the structural and stratigraphic features that characterize the geologic setting of these mines. Locally the folds trend N 20° E ±2°, the direction of the butt cleat in the Lower Kittanning coal. The face cleat strikes at N 69° W ±2° and the systematic rock joint in the surface bedrock strikes N 67° W ±2°This suggests that a directional stress oriented N 70° W produced the folds and influenced the directions of coal cleat and systematic joint sets. Analysis of SLAR indicates three directions of prominent regional lineation: N 39° E, N 31° W, and N 70° W. Little gas was encountered during development mining; large volumes of gas are encountered when roof falls. Most of the gas comes from strata above the mined coal; therefore, to control methane, roof instability must be controlled. Roof falls and high rates of methane emission are most likely where less than 30 feet of many thin layers of limestone, shale, and sandstone occurs between the Lower Kittanning coal and the next coal and in zones along the margins of a sandstone channel.

"The relative activation of eicosanoid production which results from the exposure of the alveolar macrophage (AM) to mineral dusts is thought to be a key factor in the pathophysiology of occupational lung disease. We compared in vitro basal and silicastimulated production of prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) and thromboxane A2 (TXA2) by AM from normal humans and non-human primates (Macaca nemistrina). In addition, we instilled mineral dusts directly into one lung of the non-human primate and evaluated AM eicosanoid production at two week intervals following dust instillation. Unstimulated AM from humans produce more PGE2 and TXA2 than do AM from M. nemistrina. However, in vitro exposure of AM from both species to silica dust produced a qualitatively similar increase in TXA2 production accompanied by no change in PGE2 production. Sequential analysis of AM eicosanoid production following a single bolus exposure to bituminous or anthracite coal dusts, titanium dioxide (Ti()i) dust or crystalline silica showed marked variability among individual non-human primates in qualitative and quantitative aspects of dust-induced eicosanoid production. However, the rank order of potency of the different dusts (silica> anthracite> bituminous) correlated with epidemiological evidence relating the type of dust mined to the incidence of pneumoconiosis. These studies suggest that the non-human primate may serve as a model for the study of both the role of eicosanoids in the etiology of dust-induced occupational lung disease and the biochemical basis for individual variability in the response of lung cells to mineral dust exposure. IntroductionOccupational inhalation of mineral dust can lead to chronic debilitating lung disease ( 1,2). One of the key components of the disease process is thought to be the interaction of mineral dust with the alveolar macrophage (AM) and the subsequent release by the AM of inflammatory and fibrotic substances (3,4). Chronic inhalation of mineral dust, depending on the type and amount of dust, may then produce a situation in which ongoing inflammation, accompanied by the destruction of functional lung tissue by products of activated AM and polymorphonuclear neutrophils, stimulates the production of nonfunctional matrix by lung fibroblasts.The AM produces several oxygenated derivatives of arachidonic acid (AA) which may play important roles in dust-induced lung pathophysiology (5,6). In previous studies in the rat, we found that prostaglandin E2 (PGE2). thromboxane A2 (TXA2) and leukotriene 84 (L TB4) were the major AA metabolites produced by AM (7). PGE2 is associated with pro-inflammatory activity (8) as well as anti-fibrotic activity since it downregulates interleukin -1 (IL-1) and tumor necrosis factor (TNF) release by AM (9-11). TXA2 is known to stimulate platelet activity, cause bronchial and vascular smooth muscle contraction (12) and to possess chemotactic activity (13). LTB4 is chemotactic for neutrophils and monocytes (14) and has been suggested as an additional regulatory factor in the release of TNF by AM exposed to silica dust ( 15)."

This report presents the results of tests conducted by the U.S. Bureau of Mines to determine the transport characteristics of highly concentrated paste backfill mixes made from dewatered total mine tailings. The slurry concentrations of the mixes were all above 78 pct by weight with slumps ranging from 6.4 to 16.5 cm (2.5 to 6.5in). Laboratory material property tests and full-scale pumping tests were conducted using pipe diameters of 102,128, and 154 mm (4, 5, and 6 in) and a positive-displacement pump. The results indicated that the tested backfill mixes can be successfully transported as a stiff paste and identified the influence of and the interaction among the various mix and system variables.

This report presents a U.S. Bureau of Mines study that incorporates coal mining factors, coal recovery factors, and economic factors into the definition of an economically recoverable coal resource. The relationship between these factors to the Energy Information Administration's estimate of U.S. coal resources-the "Demonstrated Reserve Base"-is discussed. The Matewan 7-1/2 minute quadrangle in eastern Kentucky was selected as the initial study area. Results indicate that of the original 1,193 million tons of resource in the quadrangle, only 89 million tons (7.5%) are economically recoverable at a cost of $25 per ton or less. At the current production rate of 5.3 million tons per year, this represents only 16.8 years of remaining reserves.

SUMMARY Dresser, in Polk County, is 3 miles south of St. Croix Falls, Wis. Company operations are about 1 mile north of the townsite. The mine has been in [peration] since 1914 and under the present ownership since 1949.

Laboratory tests were conducted to study removal of magnesium impurities from western phosphate rock concentrates by selective leaching. The systems evaluated included leaching with dilute sulfuric acid, with ammonium sulfate, and in an aqueous medium with sulfur dioxide gas. Set standards for the magnesium impurity level of phosphate rock concentrates are not available, but industrial practice has indicated that magnesium in excess of 0.3 percent MgO causes problems in phosphoric acid manufacture. Removal of magnesium was accomplished with all three systems. With dilute H2S04 the magnesium level was reduced to less than 0.1 percent MgO with an accompanying P205 loss of 6 percent. Magnesium oxide levels from 0.3 to 0.2 percent were obtainable with ammonium sulfate. However, the system requires concentrate roasting at temperatures of 900° C or higher, heated pulps (100° C), and large quantities of ammonium sulfate. Selective leaching was obtained using S02 gas in an aqueous concentrate slurry. Magnesium oxide content was reduced to less than 0.1 percent without loss of phosphate.

Future applications of seismic holography to "seismically transparent phase objects," such as rock inclusions, fracture zones, liquid-filled cavities, etc., will require techniques to improve the poor image contrast generally characteristic of these objects. Although conventional phase-contrast enhancement techniques could be used, these methods involve additional optical elements such as quarter-wave spatial filters. Owing to the anticipated practical difficulties of properly alining such optical devices and properly locating poorly defined image planes and filter planes, this approach is not considered to be well-suited to the case of seismic holograms and their laser reconstructions. Results similar to those achieved with spatial filters may be obtained without filters by specially processing the seismic hologram data. The new process, which is an extension of Gabor's subtraction holography, achieves an improvement in contrast by an interferometric technique. The process involves adding a ?before" hologram without an object present to a 90° phase-shifted "after" hologram with the object present. Then, the combination is reconstructed with a laser or by computer. Not only is the image contrast improved in such processed holograms, but the images are also phase-contoured. In general, the latter feature is not to be expected when conventional phase-contrast enhancement techniques are employed. The new technique is experimentally verified by examining computer-generated synthetic seismic holograms rather than by examining actual seismic field data. However, results of this study are directly applicable to real seismic data and should prove useful in future applications of seismic holography.

The monoclinic to tetragonal inversion of zirconium dioxide was studied by single-crystal X-ray methods, high-temperature X-ray diffractometry, and differential thermal analysis. The unusual features of the inversion, such as no definite transition Lperature, hysteresis, and athermal kinetics, were confirmed for powders who mean crystallite size was greater than 1,000 A. Samples of mean crystallite size below 1,000 A displayed classical kinetics, obeying a logarithmic rate law. A detailed mechanism based on Ubbelohde's theory of continuous phase transformations was proposed which is consistent with all the experimental facts.

World political events that occurred subsequent to yearend 1990, but that bear heavily on the global mineral industry, have been of such importance that they cannot be disregaded, and certainly they contribute to any type of "outlook." However, to write of them simply as "forecasts" in an "outlook" section of this study would be to unjustly pretend to status as prophets. Thus, this section covers events that have occurred not as predictions but rather as history. Despite the end of the cold war, the world remained fractionated, at least from the limited perspective of its mineral industry. The fractionation was not so much the result of adversarial politics between countries and groups of countries, although to be sure, such conflicts had not disappeared. Rather, the fractionation was in the widely divergent patterns of performance that resulted from the diverse conditions and problems facing the different countries and country groups.
