The question of earth models has repeatedly arisen in our work. An accurate representation of the seismic properties is required for three reasons: 1.To be able to determine from a set of received arrival times, the location of a seismic source in the earth, and secondly the degree of accuracy required in the model used for calculating source location from the set of arrival time differences. 2. To be able to determine the expected arrival times at an array of geophones produced in response to a hypothetical source in the earth. 3. To be able to estimate received signal strengths more accurately. The work reported here on earth models is based on information from sever- al consultants and from others who expressed an interest in the problem and supplied information to us. II. COAL MINE GEOLOGY On one of our earlier assignments for the Bureau of Mines, Earth Science Research Inc. of Cambridge, Massachusetts prepared for us a short description of the lithology to be expected at coal mine sites. This description follows, together with the ranges of compressional seismic velocities (Figure I*) associated with typical materials comprising the layered structure of a coal mine area. Coal is primarily associated with fresh water sediments including sandstones, shales, and clays, and occasionally may be metamorphased to varying degrees. In the Appalachian Basin the coal beds occur within cyclical sequences of non-marine shales, sands tones, conglomerates, limes tones, and clays. The beds range in thickness from a few inches to 60 feet, averaging between 2 feet and 10 feet. They have generally broad areal extent, occasionally up to 5,000 square miles, and have an overall tabular or lens-like shape. Within a particular lens, local changes in thickness are normal.

"INTRODUCTION The Eva Tanguay property is in Crittenden County, Kentucky, about 1 mile south or the village of Mexico, and can be reached from Marion, the County seat, by travellng south on State Highway 91 for 6.8 miles and then turning southwest on State Highway 70 and traveling 2 miles farther.Although the property lies between the Huffaw and Pigmy properties, which together have produced 200,000 tons of fluorspar ore, production from the Eva Tanguay has been estimed at only 1,000 tons. Geological factors on the property indicated the likelihood of an ore occurrence, and the author examined the property in April 1944. Shortly thereafter, the U.S. Geological Survey wrote a report on the property, which was not published. A drilling program was initiated by the Bureau of Mines November 1, 1944, and continued until eight holes totaling 3,137.5 feet were drilled.The holes showed that the Tubb fault system on the Eva Tanguay property is composed of three members, all of which contained commercial ore. The line dividing the Haffaw and Tanguay properties crosses the vein outcrops, causing a part of the ore indicated to be on each property.The mineral rights, which are leased by Robert Frazer of Marion, are owned by Mrs. O. S. Denny and W. C. Bohn, both of Marion."

The concept of data availability must be addressed, because there are perceptible changes from year to year, and the availability of accurately reported, precisely defined statistics and nonstatistical information provides the only sound basis for analytical studies required for government policy planning or industry market analysis. As the countries of Eastern Europe and the former U.S.S.R. undergo the transition from centrally planned economies to market economies, there has been a perceptible increase in information availability for rather obvious reasons. Any industrial operation seeking economic assistance from Government and/or private sources outside the country in which the facility is sited must provide some appraisal of its operations at the time it seeks assistance, as well as some information on previous performance to serve as tools in evaluating its potential under the proposed development scheme for which it seeks financial assistance. Additionally, there was growing governmental recognition that concealment of much of the national mineral production, trade, and consumption data for purposes of national military and/or economic security probably never was very successful, never was really necessary for most commodities, and certainly proved unnecessary with the end of the so-called cold war. The Bureau of Mines, through contract with Ultrasystems, Inc., obtained data on the oxidative degradative behavior of a number of materials used in coal mines. Tests were performed using a stagnation burner arrangement. Materials examined included those used in typical coal mining operations such as (1) polyvinyl chloride-containing materials. (2) neoprene compositions, (3) rigid foams (urethanes/isocyanates), (4) miscellaneous materials (including jute, fiber glass, and polyethylene), (5) coal, (6) fluids (phosphate esters, organic esters, oil-water emulsions), and (7) composites. The composite comprised a mixture of a phosphate ester fluid with (1) coal, (2) a representative polyvinyl chloride sample, or (3) a neoprene-type composition. A number of decomposition products are identified that could represent a potential health hazard to miners including HC1, CO, SO2 and H2S, if they were generated to exceed toxic levels.

To assess the efficacy and economics of producing power from coal, four open-cycle magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) processing schemes were selected for study. Each involved a different mode of coal combustion and level of gas cleanliness. The options considered were: (1) coal burned in a slagging combustor; (2) suspension gasification with slag removal prior to combustion; (3) parallel cyclone combustors, one operating fuel rich and the other operating with excess air; and (4) suspension gasification by the hot exhaust gases from the MHO duct with ash removed prior to combustion. Option 1 has the highest ash content in the combustion plasma and as a result would have the greatest operational difficulties associated with it. Options 2 and 4 have the cleanest MHD combustion plasma. For coal priced at $4/ton, the power generating cost of option 4,11.78 mills/Kw-hr, is the highest, with Option 1, at 9.04 mills/kW-hr the lowest. These costs may be compared with a conventional power cost of 9.92 mills/kW-hr for the late seventies. Capital costs of three of the four options were competitive with those of conventional thermal power plants employing stack gas S02 cleanup systems. Option 2 has the most favorable combination of operating characteristics and power cost. It was concluded that a clean, high-temperature working fluid can probably be produced from coal without leading to depressed system efficiencies and exorbitant capital costs.

This paper, describing the mining method at the Black Butte quicksilver mine, is one of a series of papers being prepared by the U. S. Bureau of Mines on mining practices, methods, and costs in the various districts of the United States. It is presented to show the mining practice and costs in the successful treatment of low-grade quicksilver deposits. The operation discussed is an excellent example of w1-pat can be done in working a limited tonnage of low-grade ore under sound management. The Black Butte mine is situated at Black Butte, Lane County, in the southern part of the State of Oregon, 17-1/2 miles from Cottage Grove -- a station on the Siskiyou branch of the Southern Pacific Co. The Black Butte mining district lies in the foothills of the Calapooia Mountain Range, which connects with the Cascade Range on the east and with the Coast Range on the west. The elevation at '.lie reduction plant is 1,000 feet above sea level. The apex of Black Butte Mountain, or which the mine is situated, has an elevation of 2,700 feet. The district possesses exceptional natural facilities infrequently met with elsewhere for the mining and reduction of cinnabar ores. During August 1943, the Bureau of Mines undertook sampling and measuring of the Kennedy zinc tailing pile near Hazel Green, Lafayette County, south-western Wisconsin, as part of a general investigation of this lead-and zinc-producing area at a time when it was extremely important to increase the production of metals for the Nation's War program. The tailing pile was the residue from old jigging plants that treated ore from the Kennedy mine, one of the oldest and. largest mines in the district. Because retreatment of tailing by modern milling methods was proving economically successful at other sites in the southwestern Wisconsin field, the Bureau?s investigation was designed to assist the potential operators in evaluating the feasibility of a retreatment operation at this site. The study involved measurement of the tailing pile and sampling by means of auger to determine the average metal content within the narrowest possible limits. A total of 46 auger holes ranging in depths up to 40 feet and aggregating 886.5 feet of bore were drilled in the tailing pile, and weighted samples from each hole were analyzed and averaged to determine the zinc and iron content of the tailing.

A Bureau of Mines method for recovering nickel, cobalt, and copper from low-grade domestic laterites is described, which includes the unit operations of solvent extraction and electrowinning. Previous Bureau work indicated that addition of Na2S04 (sodium sulfate) to the nickel electrolyte improved current efficiency in nickel electrowinning. The present study determines the compatibility of Na2S04 with nickel strip-ping in the solvent extraction operation of the Bureau method. The effect of adding 100 g/l Na2S04 on nickel stripping, phase disengagement, and pH was determined in comparative laboratory-scale tests. In continuous-circuit testing, Na2S04 reduced stripping efficiency to the extent that five, instead of four, strip stages were required for complete stripping of nickel from the loaded solvent. In tests made in a phase-disengagement cell that had a variable settler area, the addition of Na2S04 did not significantly affect phase separation characteristics. The pH of the nickel electrolyte in the temperature range of 20° to 65° C was also unaffected by the addition of Na2S04. An economic evaluation showed that the energy saved by adding Na2S04 to the electrolyte would more than offset the cost of adding another stripping stage.

In an effort to improve the performance of the explosive-anchored rock bolt, the Bureau of Mines studied the effect of the detonation velocity of the explosive and type of charge (linear or nonlinear) on the fracturing tendency of the anchor tube. Also, different types of tubing were compared to determine the one most suitable for use as an anchor tube. The Bruceton up-and-down method was applied in tests in which steel shooting blocks having boreholes ranging from 1-3/8 to 2-1/8 inches in diameter were used. Of the four types of tubing evaluated, a welded A-178 tubing that was drawn over a mandrel and renormalized gave the most promising results. The A-179 seamless tubing that is normally used with the explosive bolt was the most inferior. Both types, however, gave significantly better anchorage than the conventional shell when tested in both laboratory and underground experiments. Within the range of velocities studied (5,000 to 7,000 m/sec), the type of explosive showed no significant effect on anchor-tube performance. In general; linear explosive charges provided better anchorage than nonlinear charges.

Beginning in 1991, scientists at the Pittsburgh Research Laboratory recorded interviews with individuals who are recognized as experts in mine emergency response. These 30 veterans related stories and observations from events experienced during as many as 47 years of response activities. Overall, the response veterans averaged 29 years of mine emergency response experience and 35 years of mining experience. Interviewees included representatives from mining companies, the United Mine Workers of America, and State and Federal agencies. Most of their comments dealt not so much with technical aspects of particular mine emergency responses, but rather the human side of more general topics, including preparedness, experience, people on-site, mine rescue teams, and decision-making. An analysis of their interviews provides an overview of lessons learned on-site at some of the largest mine disasters since the mid-1940s. This knowledge was gathered so that it could be provided to today's miners and to tomorrow's emergency response personnel. It is expected that the collective wisdom obtained can be used to help train new responders and guide those decisions that will have to be made on the scenes of future events.

MULSIM/NL (multiple seams, nonlinear) is a new U.S. Bureau of Mines boundary-element-method (BEM) program for calculating stresses and displacements (is., convergence) in coal mines or thin, tabular rnetalliferous veins. This manual gives detailed operating instructions for MULSIM/NL and illustrates its use with several practical examples. While this manual concentrates on the practical aspects of actually running and using MULSIM/NL, another companion report titled "MULSIM/NL- Theoretical and Programmer's Manual" provides mathematical and programming details to those engineers and programmers who need to fully understand the FORTRAN program or desire to alter and enhance it. MULSIMINL analyzes one to four parallel seams that have any orientation with respect to the Earth's surface. Three main features distinguish MULSIM/NL from its predecessors: (1) nonlinear material models, (2) multiple mining steps, and (3) comprehensive energy release and strain energy computations. MULSIM/NL has six material models for the in-seam material including (1) linear elastic for coal, (2) strain softening, (3) elastic plastic, (4) bilinear hardening, (5) strain hardening, and (6) linear elastic for gob. The multiple mining step capability enables the user to simulate a changing mine geometry. Finally, MULSIM/NL performs comprehensive energy release rate calculations.

The Bureau of Mines studied thermodynamic properties of Al-Ni alloys con¬taining 0.54 to 30.04 atomic percent nickel with the aid of the high-temperature galvanic cell Al(1) // Al+3 (AlCl3 in NaCI.KC1) // Al-Ni alloy (1 or s). Activities of aluminum and nickel (compared with pure liquid metals as the standard state) show pronounced negative deviation from Raoult's law at 1,273 K. The properties [?G, ?Gxs, ?G ideal, ?GA1, AGxs1, ?Gni , and ?GNixs] have been derived from the experimental data and are summarized in tables and illustrations. At 1,127 K, the thermodynamic stability for the invariant three-phase equilibrium consisting of a saturated liquid, A13Ni, and A13Ni2 has been uniquely defined by an activity for aluminum of 0.751. A free energy of formation at 1,127 K of -7,940 cal/g-atom was derived for the compound A13Ni.

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), Pittsburgh Research Laboratory, cooperated with Tecrete Industries Pty. Ltd. and BHP Australia Coal in a research program to evaluate the strength characteristics and air leakage of four seal and two stopping designs for use in underground coal mines. A fundamental safety research area for NIOSH is to eliminate the occurrence of coal mine explosions or to mitigate their effects. One approach to achieve this goal is to develop new and innovative seal designs that provide increased explosion isolation protection for the mining personnel against ignitions that originate from within the gob or. other worked-out areas of the mine Full-scale seals and stoppings were constructed in the Experimental Mine at Lake Lynn Laboratory near Fairchance, Fayette County, PA. They were ail--leakage tested, then subjected to a series of explosions with average pressure pulses ranging from 25 to 500 kPa (3.5 to 72 psi). Instrumentation measured seal displacement and acceleration as a function of time, providing data to assist in the development of numerical models 1'01- future seal design. All three seals designed with Meshblock wire forlnwo~-k ant1 a lnonolithic shotcrete core withstood the first explosion test, which generated an avcr-age rnaximu~n pressure of - 140 kPa (-20 psi) while maintaining acceptable air leakage rates. These seals I-anged from 175 to 325 mm thick. They included a 2.7-m-high by 325-mm-thick seal that was tesled 27 hr after completion against this - 140-kPa explosion pressure, a special requirement of the test program. This seal survived explosions with pressure pulses up to 300 kPa (43 psi). The 2.3-m-high by 325-mm-thick Meshblock seal survived three explosion tests with overpressures up to 455 kPa (66 psi) and satisfied the air leakage criteria. A I ,200-mm-thick plug seal was constructed of two Gunmesh formwork walls in-filled with shotcrete and a 3,450-kPa (500-psi) strength Aquablend core. This plug seal survived three explosions with pressure pulses ranging 11-om 150 lo 430 kPa (-22 to 62.5 psi) with no measurable postexplosion air leakage. Two Gunmesh stoppings with thicknesses 01' 40 and 75 inln withstood explosion overpressures of 23 and 115 kPa, respectively. Anchoring all seal and stopping designs into the roof, ribs, and floor with steel "rootbolts" provided very effective boundary constraint that is critical to the performanceofstructures subject to explosion overpressures.

Mine operators often rely on mine rescue teams to save lives during an underground emergency such as an underground fire, explosion or roof fall. It is extremely important that team members are provided with adequate exploration equipment and that training simulations are conducted in a realistic manner. A series of mine rescue training exercises was developed, conducted and evaluated by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) in cooperation with the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection, Bureau of Deep Mine Safety. The exercises were conducted at NIOSH’s Lake Lynn Laboratory during 1995 to 1998 and resulted in improved technology and training for mine rescue teams. For example, existing technologies were identified to help rescue teams during exploration. These included chemical light sticks to identify team members and mark crosscuts and mine materials, strobe lights for mapping out escape ways, and a helmet mounted thermal imaging system to see through smoke. A hands-free communication system showed potential for enhanced communications between team members and the fresh air base. A new high-visibility team lifeline that allows for flexibility of movement between team members was developed. A positive-pressure inflatable escape device (IED) was used to isolate the “hazardous” environment from fresh air and allow rescue team members to traverse through. An inflatable feed-tube partition that can rapidly block large openings such as underground passageways and simultaneously provide a feed-tube for high-expansion foam generators was also deployed for several simulations. During the simulations, mine rescue team members donned self-contained breathing apparatuses (SCBA) and traversed more than 305-m of mine passageways filled with nontoxic smoke. Visibility ranged from 0.3 to 0.9-m. In one area of the mine, a kerosene heater was used to simulate a fire and reduce the oxygen concentration. In another area, a 1.5 pct methane zone was established. The team members searched for "victims,” mapped the passageways, built temporary stoppings and ventilated the smoke-filled entries. The teams indicated that the simulations were challenging and very informative.

This report (An Introduction to Safety) is the first in a nine-part series of recommendations addressing the functional safety of processor-controlled mining equipment. It is part of a risk-based system safety process encompassing hardware, software, humans, and the operating environment for the equipment's life cycle. Figure 1 shows a safety framework containing these recommendations. The reports in this series address the various life cycle stages of inception, design, approval and certification, commissioning, operation, maintenance, and decommissioning. These recommendations were developed as a joint project between the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health and the Mine Safety and Health Administration. They are intended for use by mining companies, original equipment manufacturers, and aftermarket suppliers to these mining companies. Users of these reports are expected to consider the set in total during the design cycle. • 1.0 Safety Introduction.—This is an introductory report for the general mining industry. It provides basic system/software safety concepts, discusses the need for mining to address the functional safety of programmable electronics, and includes the benefits of implementing a system/software safety program. • 2.1 System Safety and 2.2 Software Safety.—These reports draw heavily from International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) standard 61508 and other recognized standards. The scope is "surface and underground safety mining systems employing embedded, networked, and non-networked programmable electronics." System safety seeks to design safety into all phases of the entire system. Software is a subsystem; thus, software safety is a part of the system's safety. • 3.0 Safety File.—This report contains the documentation that demonstrates the level of safety built into the system and identifies limitations for the system’s use and operation. In essence, it is a "proof of safety" that the system and its operation meets the appropriate level of safety for the intended application. It starts from the beginning of the design, is maintained during the full life cycle of the system, and provides administrative support for the safety program of the full system. [ ]

"While control of dust-related diseases, the objective of the Generic Mineral Technology Center for Respirable Dust, is of prime importance from the human standpoint it is also essential to the economic well-being of the mining industry (FIGURE 23). Although significant progress has been made, the problem continues to be a major concern to the mining community. An increasing global demand for coal and other minerals means that production and the number of miners employed is on the rise. Therefore, the importance of this research to the mining industry cannot be overemphasized.The five areas of dust research are 1) control of dust generation, 2) dilution, dispersion and collection of dust in mine airways, 3) characterization of dust particles, 4) interaction of dust and lungs, 5) relationship of mine environment, geology, and seam characteristics to dust generation and mobility. Some experimental projects where the research is conducted almost exclusively in the laboratory may still rely on industry for imput. No industrial resources are necessary to the research of the non-experimental projects, for example computer modeling .The remaining research is classified as experimental and these projects do require interaction with industry in varying degrees. Periodic trips to mining sites in Western Pennsylvania, Southern Ohio, and West Virginia are necessary to record measurements or collect samples. Or companies may provide needed samples or equipment to the university for use in the laboratory. On several projects interaction is limited to advice or information supplied to the researcher by industry personnel."

[A colorimetric method5/ for the determination of benzene in amounts as low as 0.001 mg has been developed recently at the U.S. Bureau of Mines Pittsburgh Experiment Station by the authors, with the assistance of chemical personnel fro a the Allegheny County (Pa.) Relief Works Division. The method is based on the direct nitration of either liquid - or gas - phase benzene, followed by neutralization, extraction with butanone, and final treatment with sodium hydroxide which produces a violet color. The color is matched with color standards of known values. Although the method is adaptable to many conditions the primary objective was a procedure that would be suitable for hygienic investigations. The development worth included a study of possible interference by chemicals that be present in those situations in which the method. would be employed. In this study it was found that a specimen of hexane prepared by the Gulf Research Laboratory, Pittsburgh, by fractionation of West Virginia natural gas gave positive result for benzene, whereas a specimen of pentane prepared in the same manner showed only a trace, and specimens of n -heptane and octane (2,2,4 trimethylpentane) supplied by Eastman Kodak Co. save a negative result. According to information obtained from the Eastman Kodak Co. the latter two compounds were highly purified, the n-heptene being prepared from line and the octane synthesized in the laboratory. On nitration of a larger amount of tae natural hexane a visible quantity, of needlelike crystals which resembled those of m-dinitrobenzene was obtained. The hexane from this nitration was recovered by distillation and again nitrated, but no crystals or colorimetric indication of benzene was obtained. This imitated that the specimen of natural hexane contained a substance which at least had the chemical behavior of benzene.]

"This paper presents an analysis of the effect of the dynamics of bit wear on dust generation. Two surveys have been conducted in order to assess the mechanism and type of bit wear and to evaluate the impact of bit wear on the productivity of the continuous miners. Used bits were collected from the underground coal mines and these used bits were utilized in laboratory coal cutting. The effect of bit wear on dust generation has been quantified and its impacted on dust generation and ventilation system has been exemplified.INTRODUCTION Research has reduced the prevalence of Coal Workers Pneumoconiosis from 15 to 5 percent according to NIOSH reports (Breslin 1982). However CWP still have not been eliminated as a hazard to mine workers. To prevent coal workers from having black lung MSHA has established a very strict standard for coal mine operations (2.0 mg/m3 with silica content equal to or less than 0.1 mg/m3,). There are numerous coal operations still experiencing great difficulty with meeting the 2mg/m3 dust standard. Among these are the longwall sections and continuous mining sections. In order to meet the rising demand of energy and coal, the number of longwall operations and continuous mining operations would have to be increased. Thus a long term research commitment is required to develop basic solutions that are more generic and greater benefit to the mining and mineral industry.In continuous-mining operations, the miners are exposed to the dust produced during the fragmentation of the coal from the face plus the dust produced during loading and transferring of the coal. The fragmentation process generates most of the respirable dust. The amount of dust generated during fragmentation depended on the coal properties, cutting parameters and cutting bit configuration. Bit wear changes bit configuration, therefore, it also affects dust generation. Bit wear can be defined as the removal of material from surface as a result of mechanical action. In soft coal mines bit wear may not be a serious problem but in hard coal seams bit wear is very significant.
