Automatic control instruments were utilized by the Bureau of Mines for routine assays of large numbers of oil shale samples and other bituminous materials. The standard Fischer assay method was automated by automatically controlling the heating cycles of a battery of 12 electric heaters with electronic controllers and programmers. The condensers were cooled with a modified automatically controlled refrigeration bath. The complete assembly consisted of 12 retort units, necessary control instruments, and the refrigeration bath. This equipment was capable of producing more consistent results than those previously obtained with the gas-heated retorts and of increasing the output of assays substantially with no increase in operating personnel.

Eliminate accidental tramming of a cleanup tractor. Approach A switch was installed in the operator's seat cushion to pre-vent the cleanup tractor from tramming without an operator in the driver's seat. How It Works The operator must be seated, and the Forward/Reverse Switch (that controls tramming direction) must pass through the NEUTRAL position before the vehicle will tram. See Figure 1. A pressure-sensitive seat cushion switch, a solid-state relay, and a double-contact relay were added to the control circuitry of an S & S BMUAT -88 cleanup tractor to create this tramming interlock. The weight of the operator on the cushion closes the seat cushion switch (Figure 2, A). This activates the solid-state relay (B), which completes the initial circuitry. Moving the For- ward/Reverse Switch (C) to NEUTRAL energizes the coil in the double-contact relay (D) and closes both contacts. One contact completes a sustaining circuit which keeps the double-contact relay energized. The second contact transfers power to the remaining contacts within the Forward/ Reverse Switch. These circuits are shown in greater de- tail in Figure 2.

Within the Mine Safety and Health Administration's (MSHA's) classification of metallnonmetal (MAM) mining, the number of independent contractor' employees has increased significantly in recent years. In 1985 independent contractor employee hours reported to MSHA accounted for 4.5% of all M/NM mining employee hours (excluding office workers); by 1994 that proportion had doubled to 9.0%. As a result, these workers now account for an increasingly significant proportion of fatal and nonfatal mining accidents. According to MSHA's statistics, annually computed fatality incidence rates (the number of fatalities per 200,000 employee hours) for independent contractors working in M/NM mining are consistently higher than those for operator employees. Over the five-year period from 1990 through 1994, 53 independent contractor employees were fatally injured while working on M/NM mine property (See Table 1). More than one third of these fatalities (36%) were due to accidents involving powered haulage; 21% were machinery accidents; and 11% percent were falling material accidents. Combined, these three accident classifications accounted for 68% of all independent contractor fatalities occurring on M/NM mine property during these years. Clearly, current efforts to increase the safety of the mining workforce must also address the safety of the independent contractor employee. This report is a preliminary attempt to identify trends in the employment and safety of independent contractor workers by identifying which segments of M/NM mining are experiencing the greatest increases in the number of independent contractor employees and by examining changes in the rates and types of accidents in which these employees are involved. The Act of Congress authorizing the establishment of the United States Bureau of Mines became effective July 1, 1910. One of the most important duties Congress delegated to the Bureau in this Act was the study of health and safety conditions in the mineral industries. Early investigations of these conditions revealed the need of prompt Care of injured employees, as, under the difficulties inherent in their occupation, seemingly unimportant wounds if not treated promptly might become infected and cause permanent disability or even death. Many seriously injured persons brought out of mines and plants by fellow workers ignorant of approved methods of giving first aid or of safe means of transportation have been caused suffering and have had injuries accentuated to such a degree as to bring about permanent disability or death. The need of general instruction in first aid thus became apparent. BRIEF HISTORY OF FIRST-AID WORK The education of miners in the United States in first aid probably was conducted systematically first by the anthracite industry in Pennsylvania. Subsequently, first-aid training was carried on actively in Alabama and Indiana. Meanwhile, a general training campaign was carried on among industrial workers by the American Red Cross Society; when the Bureau of Mines began its nation-wide campaign of instructing employees of the mineral industries, the Red Cross turned over that part of its industrial training work to the Bureau but continued to cooperate by furnishing surgeons as judges in important first-aid contests and demonstr tions and assisted for a number of years in determining training methods.

[This is the eighth in a series of reports on properties of commercial motor fuels, made in accordance with a cooperative agreement between the Cooperative Fuel Research (C.F.R.) Committee and the Bureau of Mines of the United States Department of the interior. The fir t report gave data on motor gasolines sold during the winter of 1935-36.3/ The present report, covering 1,679 simples, represents the products of US companies plus those from the Pacific coast, witch were averaged by the Pacific Coast Technical Group before being submitted and arc published exactly as they were submitted. The three groups of data on samples of regular, premium, and third-grade gasolines are averred separately. the, number of samples and brands representing each grade are as follows: Regular price, 869 samples, 76 brands; premium price, 452 sample, 45 brands; third-grade 358 samples, 52 brands. Federal lands often contain extensive mineral resources and decisions affecting access to those lands are made with knowledge of the possible minerals-related consequences. Information is provided to the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) in this report for use in preparing environmental impact statements on the Western Mojave Management Area (WMMA) and the Desert Tortoise Priority Habitat (DTPH). To augment U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) efforts such as the Mineral Assessment of the Planned Foil Irwin Expansion, Modified Silurian Valley Alternative, San Bernardino County, California which is in progress, and the Economic Analysis of the Minerals Potential of the East Mojave National Scenic Area; California, the USBM studied mineral deposits and estimated the potential impacts of mining in a segment of the California desert; the 8.7-million-acre WMMA, an area which includes the 1.2-million-acre Desert Tortoise Priority Habitat (DTPH). In addition, this information is intended to assist administrators, legislators, and the concerned public in understanding the economic importance of mineral resources in the California desert, especially that portion designated as the WMMA. See figure 1.

The Bureau of Mines studied tailings samples from 11 large-scale western copper operations to determine the potential for recovery of rutile and other critical and strategic minerals. Up to 15 pounds per short ton (lb/st) Ti02 was found ion these samples; however, only 9 to 44 pct of the Ti02 was liberated rutile. For one sample, gravity preconcentra-tion, grinding, and flotation recovered 34 pct of the Ti02 in a 54.8-pct-Ti02 concentrate. Over 0.38 Ib/st W was found in some of the tailings sampleso Scheelite was identified as the major W mineral. Nine of the eleven samples contained about 0.02 to 0.18 Ib/st Co. Pyrite was the principal Co-bearing sulfide mineral, with Co contained in about one-fifth of the pyrite grains. Up to 30 pct of the Co was concentrated in a bulk sulfide flotation concentrate.

The Bureau of Mines developed equations to determine the relationship of yields and products obtained from BM-AGA carbonization in 13-and l8-inch-diameter retorts. The developed equations indicate that results of carbonization in l8-inch-diameter retorts can be predicted from results obtained with l3-inch-diameter retorts.

Batch and continuous - circuit flotation , leaching , precipitation , and electrodeposition studies were made by the Bureau of Mines to determine optimum conditions for treatment of complex mercury - antimony sulfide and mercury- arsenic sulfide ores and concentrates . On the Red Devil ore sample over 95 percent of both the mercury and antimony sulfides were recovered in a flotation concentrate containing 35.6 percent mercury and 21.0 percent antimony . By selective flotation a mercury concentrate containing 71.0 percent mercury and 2.9 percent antimony was obtained with a mercury recovery of 90.4 percent . Leaching results show that , with 150 grams per liter of sodium sulfide and 50 grams per liter of sodium hydroxide , 95 to 99 percent of the mercury , antimony , and arsenic sulfides could be extracted from the concentrates treated . Sodium hydroxide reagent consumption was based on the sulfides generated in the dissolution of the sulfide minerals and on the method of metal recovery used . Selective leaching of the antimony and arsenic sulfides with potassium sulfide dissolved more than 95 percent of either of these two sulfides and 0.5 to 5 percent of the mercury sulfide present . Methods for recovering mercury and antimony from solution were electrodeposition of mercury followed by electrodeposition of antimony , aluminum precipitation of both mercury and antimony , or antimony precipitation of mercury followed by antimony electrodeposition . This report presents the results of a statistical analysis of a limited amount of sample and assay data from a production panel in an open - pit phosphate mine in the Phosphoria formation in Idaho . A frequency distribution analysis is shown for the assays , sample interval lengths , and products of assay and sample interval length for the millshale , furnace - shale , and main phosphate beds . Correlation techniques were used to show the relationships between assays and sample interval lengths . Within- drill - hole and between - drill - hole correlation were also examined as a means of predicting grade trends in the ore . Simulation methods , utilizing a digital computer , were used to establish assay populations that could be used for estimating grade of ore , cutoff grades , and deposit or bed identification .

Linear programing provides a mathematical technique by which activities can be planned in such a way that an optimal result is obtained. Routine applications of linear programing require only a knowledge of algebra. However, a complete understanding of the fundamentals of linear programing requires a knowledge of advanced mathematics. The purpose of this publication is clarification of terminology and illustration of applications in comparatively simple mining problems. Two mining situations are considered: Mine stopes from which ore is to be produced at a minimum production cost; also, uranium mines from which ore is transported to one mill, a maximum monetary value is desired. The details of data arrangement for solution by linear programing are described and the solutions are presented. Results of these solutions indicate successful applications of linear programing to mine production scheduling.

This Bureau of Mines report investigates the horizontal trajectory of boreholes drilled in coalbeds using the rotary drilling technique. Test holes drilled in coalbeds showed that the path of a borehole in the horizontal plane depends on drilling assembly configuration, drill bit rotation, and coalbed geologic features. An assembly that contained an 18-ft (5.53) long drill collar and two centralizers had the best horizontal stability evidenced by trajectories that deviated less than 16 ft (4.9 m) from a target at 1,000 ft (305 m). Removal of one of the centralizers resulted in a loss of control of hole trajectory in the horizontal plane. Generally, holes tended to turn to the right, presumably because of right-hand rotation of the bit. Deviations from the original bearing line were as much as 200 ft (61 m) or more at a depth of 1,000 ft (305 m).

Despits its high melting point (2,135° C.), resistance to attack by molten metals, and its hardness (8), spinel (MgO?Al203) synthesized by the fusion of alumina (Al 2 0.) and magnesia (MgO) is not used on a large scale as a commercial furnace lining, mainly because of the prohibitive cost. This investigation by the Federal Bureau of Mines was prompted by the possibility of producing synthetic spinel from inexpensive raw materials by methods outlined in U.S. Patent 2,029,773, "Process for Obtaining Products Containing Spinets," dated February 4, 1936. In this patent Ture B. Haglund described a process for recovering crystalline spinels from melts in the system Mg0?Al203-2CaO-SiO2, a system well suited to the use of starting materials such as dolomite CaMg(C03)2, olivine [2(Mg?Fe)0.Si02], and bauxite (Al203?2H20) which are abundant in the southeastern United States. Compositions, ranging from a low content in the eutectic mixture of 35 percent spinal and 65 percent dicalcium silicate (2 CaO?SiO2) to a high of 75 percent spinel and 25 percent dicalcium silicate, were fused in electric furnaces of the arc-resistance and internal-resistance types. So long as members of the system were in proper chemical balance, "dusting" slags could be produced over the entire range of spinel concentration.

The effects of HBr concentration and temperature on the solubility and hydration state of AlBr3,' CoBr2, PbBr2, MnBr2, KBr, and NaBr were investigated by the Bureau of Mines. Saturated aqueous solutions of the AI, Pb, K, and Na bromides were sparged with HBr gas at 20°, 40°, and 60° C, and saturated solutions of Co and Mn bromides were sparged at 20° C. Increased HBr concentration caused decreased salt solubility because of the common ion effect for all the investigated bromides except PbBr2. Aqueous solubilities at 20° C were, in percent, 51.7 for AlBr3, 53.2 for CoBr2, 1.1 for PbBr2, 59.6 for MnBr2' 39.5 for KBr, and 47.4 for NaBr. At 60° C, the solubilities were, in percent, 53.3 for AlBr3, 2.2 for PbBr2' 46.0 for KBr, and 53.8 for NaBr. Solubilities in solutions sparged to HBr saturation at 20° C were, in percent, 0.5 for AlBr3, 42.0 for CoBr2, 32.2 for PbBr2, 21.0 for MnBr2, 0.6 for KBr, and 0.3 for NaBr. At 60° C, the solubilities at HBr saturation were, in percent, 1.8 for AlBr3, 41.4 for PbBr2, 1.3 for KBr, and 0.4 for NaBr. CoBr2 precipitated out to a minimum solubility of 27.2 pct at 28.7-pct-HBr concentration. Further increases in HBr concentration increased CoBr2 solubility because of the formation of bromide complexes. PbBr2 in-creased in solubility as HBr concentration increased.

[Methods of distilling topped crude oils and distillates under vacuum, accompanied by good fractionation, have taken a place of major importance in the refining industry. In the refining of petroleum products it is generally desirable to produce a distillate of good quality, and this objective is attained by fractionation of a high degree. The laboratory and commercial practice have proved chat by varying the amount of fractionation the quality of the distillate car be changed, and refiners are cognizant of the advantages of good fractionation. Distillation-under high vacuum, however, is a relatively new practice in petroleum refining, and only during the last few years has there boon an indication that that this method ray become a general practice in the industry. Vacuum distillation offers many advantages over older methods of distilling petroleum products. Vacuum combined with steam distillation, for example, is replacing straight-stream distillation because the quality of the products of vacuum and, steam distillation surpasses that of those produced by straight-steam distillation. Although the injection of varying amounts of steam in a vacuum unit is common practice, the amount of steam used is becoming less as the vacuum within the unit is increased. This report describes tie construction of a visible-action laboratory batch still and fractioning; column and. gives curtain data pertaining to the operation of the apparatus under vacuum for the production. of lubricating distillates. The apparatus was designed and built to produce lubricating distillates under as nearly ideal conditions as possible, in order that a subsequent study of the characteristics of the distillates could be made.]

"INTRODUCTION Sulfur is a most damaging impurity in many of our American coals. From the older coal industry of Europe and Britain we can apparently learn but little about the problem of preparing and using high-sulfur coal. Although washing has long been established there for controlling ash content, sulfur is referred to rarely, as the important deposits are singularly low in sulfur.On the other hand, widely distributed coal deposits of America differ tremendously in sulfur content. Many of the more extensive beds contain too much sulfur for metallurgical use, and almost everywhere except in the Rocky Mountain and Pacific coast regions sulfur control is at least a potential problem. American coal-preparation engineers are confronted not only with great variations in the total quantity of sulfur in coal but with an intricately varying pattern of the physical and chemical forms in which the sulfur occurs. It must be conceded that the baffling problem of sulfur reduction in coal is as yet substantially unsolved, for there are but few isolated instances in which we have been able to prepare a satisfactory metallurgical fuel from coals containing as much as 2.0 percent sulfur in the raw state.It has been assumed generally that organic sulfur, being chemically combined with carbonaceous matter, is distributed throughout the coal matter and that it remains unchanged in the clean-coal part of the product during washing.Sulfur that may be washed out of the coal is that part that is combined with the iron in pyrite lenticles associated with the coal. In most of our coals it has been found that, besides the visible bands, lenses, and flakes of pyrite, extremely small and even microscopic particles of pyrite 4/ are distributed through the coal matter. Only the free, relatively coarse pyrite particles .are removed by conventional coal-washing devices, and usually most of the sulfur is still left in the product."

From 1889, when the first railroad shipments of coal were made from McDowell County, W. Va., until today, the coals produced from the New River and Pocahontas groups have had a good reputation as premium low-volatile coals. Although there has been a large production from the Pocahontas No. 3 and. Pocahontas No. 4 beds, considerable reserves remain. This Bureau of Mines publication is one of a series appraising the Nation's coking-coal reserves by presenting data on the basis of which the practicability of upgrading marginal deposits to metallurgical standards can be determined. This study of the preparation characteristics of McDowell County coals is the second of the series to be undertaken in West Virginia. The Pocahontas No. 3 and No, 4 beds have not been included because their washing characteristics are well known.

Many analysts have had difficulty in obtaining accurate and consistent determinations of the volatile matter in low-temperature coke when the usual standard method for coal was followed. The tendency is toward too-high results, due to mechanical losses which are extremely difficult to avoid or control. With cokes there also may be an error due to excessive oxidation of the fixed carbon. Much of the earlier experimental work on the volatile-matter determination in coal, such as that of Parr, Fieldner and Davis, and others, has been on the effect of time, temperatures, shape and size of crucibles, method of applying heat, and type of furnace, all of which data has evolved the present A.S. T. M. standard method for volatile matter in coal and coke. It is not the purpose of this investigation to deal directly with the above phases of the procedure, but rather to study some of the factors affecting the results in those types of fuel which give erroneous results due to mechanical losses. This mechanical loss is usually designated as "sparking." There are two kinds of sparks or incandescent particles which may appear: particles of soot from partially condensed carbon from the burning gases, and unburned particles of the material itself which escape. The first type does not affect the accuracy of the volatile matter results, and is therefore negligible. The second type, however, causes appreciable loss and results in showing higher volatile percentages than actually exist.
