This study was prepared in response to the need for a series of data that reflect the basic flow pattern of energy resources in the United States. To effectively measure and analyze energy,2 it is necessary to prepare balances that reflect both production and consumption, and the various forms energy resources take at different stages of utilization. Before energy can be measured it must also be put into a common unit. In this study the common unit us d is the British Thermal Unit (Btu). The ideal point to survey energy is at the stage of final ultimate use, representing the useful work derived from the interaction of energy inputs and the prime mover. Unfortunately this concept of efficient or useful work from energy output cannot readily be measured in the aggregate. With the present available official data, energy measurement can be carried to the point of calculation of net inputs of energy3 into the economy at various stages of utilization. However, preparation of energy balances, on a net basis is hampered by the fact that this can only be done for years when the censuses of Mineral Industries and Manufactures are taken, usually at 5-year intervals.

"This report on the properties of motor fuels sold through service stations ni the Unietd States is a continuation of a series of reports made in accordance with a cooperating agreement between the Coordinating Fuel Research (CRF) Committee of the Coordinating Research Council (CRC)3/ and the Bureau of Mines of the United States Department of the Interior. The first of these reports presented data on motor gasolines sold during the winter of 1935-36.4/ Further reports were issued describing motor gasolines sold during the succeeding summers and winters to and including the summer of 1941.4/ No reports were made on motor gasolines sold during the winter of 1941-42 and during the summer of 1942. However, starting with the winter of 1942-43, the semiannual reports were resumed.4/The present report presents analytical data for 1,381 samples, representing the products of approximately 75 companies. Most of the samples represented in this report were secured during July and the first half of August, 1945. As in previous surveys, the companies covered by the survey include both large and small suppliers. Conforming to former reports, the data cover three groups of samples – regular-price, premium-price, and third-grade gasolines.As the number of analyses submitted for samples of third-grade gasoline are not considered adequate to represent this type of motor fuel, data for the analyses have not been averaged, but the individual items are tabulated. The number of samples, items and brands comprising each group is as follows: Regular-price, 733 samples, 229 items, and 57 brands; premium-price, 504 samples, 197 items, and 56 brands; third-grade, 84 samples, 28 items and 12 brands. "In a 1985 seminar, we were told that over-optimism abounds in Artificial Intelligence (AI), that AI is neither a science nor a technology yet, and that we will be both exhilarated and disappointed with AI. In fact, even today, there is no single accepted definition of AI; however, certain features have been identified by AI researchers as essential to consider an entity (e.g. machine or program) to be intelligent. According .to Shank (1987), these features include communication (to be able to communicate with), internal knowledge (knowledge about itself), world knowledge (awareness and knowledge about the world outside), intentionality (knowing what one wants and a plan to seek it, ie. goal seeking behavior), and creativity (being adaptable to changing conditions). None of these figures would individually define intelligence; however, each would be a part of intelligence in its own way.The prospects for the development of entities with AI have never been as good as they are now. The combination of advancements in computer hardware and .software along with new insights into the ways in· which we store knowledge and use it for problem solving has enhanced the potential for the creation ~f intelligent entities. After some unbounded optimism of a major breakthrough in the fifties and frustrating disappointments in the two following decades, it appears now that AI has emerged from research labs to industrial practice. This is confirmed by the growing number of repeat applications of AI in business and industry to the extent that AI can now be considered a technology.AI applications are categorized into several distinct areas such as Natural Language Processing, Speech Recognition and Synthesis, Expert Systems, Robotics, Machine Vision, etc. Of these practical realizations, Expert Systems (ES) has the greatest potential for meeting the decision-making needs of the manager in the ever-growing complex scoio-technical systems. Prof. Feigenbaum, an expert and leader on expert systems, has defined Expert System as"" ... an intelligent computer program that uses knowledge and inference procedures to solve problems that are difficult enough to require significant human expertise for their solution. Knowledge necessary to perform at such a level, plus the inference procedures used, can be thought of as a model of the expertise of the best practitioners of the field."""

The investigation to evaluate the reserves of coking coal in the United States suitable for the manufacture of metallurgical coke is being made by the Bureau of Mines in three parts: (1) To estimate known (measured plus indicated) recoverable reserves of all coking coal; (2) to study the carbonizing properties of coals and coal blends not now widely used for metallurgical coke making; and (3) to upgrade marginal coals through effective preparation. This is the second7j of a series of reports giving the results of studies by counties under part (1) of the investigation. This report covers Indiana County, Pa., which comprises parts of the Smicksburg, Punxsutawney, Elders Ridge, Indiana, Barnesboro, Latrobe, New Florence, and Johnstown Quadrangles. (See fig. 1.) A base map for each bed in each Quadrangle was made to the scale 1 inch equals 1,200 feet. Maps of mines, locations of drill holes, bed and total coal thicknesses, and the outcrop of the bed were plotted on the maps. With all available data plotted, isopach lines were drawn to limit areas of known unmined reserves in beds 0 to 14 inches thick, 14 to 28 inches thick, 28 to 42 inches thick, and over 42 inches thick. These areas of coal reserves also were divided into "measured" and "indicated" categories. All areas in each thickness range and in each category, mined-out areas, areas excluded from the estimate, and areas outside of the outcrop were measured by planimeter on the base maps. Estimates of total reserves 14 inches and more thick and maps for individual beds were prepared from these data.

The same functions are also tabulated in units of British thermal units pound-mole, degrees Rankine for every degree Rankine from 100° to 1,000°.

The production of oil during the early development of new oil fields is usually accompanied by large quantities of natural gas. Since in most fields gas under pressure is the main source of the energy causing the oil to move through the sands into the wells and thence to the surface, coincident production of natural gas will continue as long as present-day producing methods are used. Generally the use of this gas is restricted, since markets are not readily available. Consequently, a large portion of the gas produced is often wasted by being blown into the air. The magnitude of gas waste is well brought out in the following statement by Miller: Only a few outstanding examples need be cited to show the enormous production of gas that accompanies the discovery of new sources. In April, 1927, the Ventura field produced approximately 210,000,000 cubic feet of gas a day; and during the summer of 1927 Alamitos Heights reached a peak gas production of 102,000,000 cubic feet a day; on December 1, 1928, as a result of the summer's deeper drilling in the Long Beach field, surplus gas production amounted to 125,000,000 cubic feet a day. It is estimated that in January, 1929, the Santa Fe Springs field will have a daily gas production of 387,000,000 cubic feet from the recently discovered Buckbee oil zone. Of this amount 274,000,000 cubic feet a day will be the surplus above the amount required for field and plant fuel, taken out by utility corporations, and that used in repressuring the Meyer sand which lies above the Buckbee zone. Another example of the waste of large volumes of gas is in the Turner Valley field of Canada, 6 where 250,000,000 cubic feet of gas is being burned daily in flambeaus, as there is no present outlet except at prohibitive cost.

The Bureau of Mines developed two new gap-sensitivity methods for explosives, and especially permissible explosives, to overcome certain disadvantages of the present routine half-cartridge method. The revised methods are based on the statistical up-and-down method and give more useful measurements of the 50-percent' gap values than the nonstatistical routine method. The new methods use full cartridges and incorporate certain physical improvements such as the use of cardboard tubes for containing the explosives and coal dust gaps to simulate actual mining conditions. A total of 60 samples of permissible explosives were evaluated simultaneously with the 2 improved methods and with the half-cartridge method

A fundamental safety research area for the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is to eliminate the occurrence of coal mine explosions or to mitigate their effects. One approach is to develop and evaluate new and innovative seal designs that provide increased explosion protection for mining personnel. The NIOSH Pittsburgh Research Laboratory (PRL) cooperated with HeiTech Corp. of Virginia, Barclay Mowlem Construction Ltd. of Queensland, Australia, and the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) in three separate research programs to evaluate the strength characteristics and air leakage resistance of numerous innovative seal designs and ventilation control structures for use in underground coal mines. For each phase of the program, various full-scale seals, stoppings, and an overcast design were constructed in PRL's Lake Lynn Experimental Mine near Fairchance, Fayette County, PA. The seals and stoppings were built in crosscuts and were subjected to explosions to evaluate their strengths. Four pumpable cementitious seal designs ranging in thickness from 610 to 915 mm (24 to 36 in) were evaluated in the first cost-reimbursable research program with HeiTech Corp. A simple wooden framework with brattice liner was used as a form to contain the cementitious slurry during the curing period. As the seal designs decreased in thickness, higher compressive strength cementitious grout was used. All four seals withstood an explosion pressure pulse of at least 138 kPa (20 psi) while maintaining acceptable air leakage resistance. In the second cost-reimbursable research program with Barclay Mowlem Construction Ltd. of Australia, several innovative seal and stopping designs and an overcast design were evaluated. Each of the seal designs and the overcast side and wing walls used one or more air-inflated vinyl bladder assemblies anchored to the mine roof and hitched into the ribs and floor. The air within these bladders was displaced with a high-strength cementitious grout. The overcast deck consisted of a 200-mm ('7.8-in) thick reinforced cementitious slab. This was the first time that an overcast structure had been explosion tested under full-scale conditions. All of the seals, stoppings, and overcast design passed the air leakage tests before being subjected to a series of explosions with static pressure pulses ranging from 14 to 475 kPa (2 tab 69 psi). Instrumentation measured seal and overcast wall displacement as a function of time. The 450-mm (1 7.7-in) thick seal in the 2.8-m(9-ft) high third crosscut withstood an explosion pressure of 170 kPa (25 psi), but failed during a later test, which generated a peak static pressure of 475 kPa (69 psi) at the seal location. A similar 450-mm-thick seal in the 2.1-m (7-ft) high second crosscut withstood three explosion tests, which generated peak static pressures of 195, 205, and 370 kPa (28, 30, and 54 psi) at the seal location. Next, the overcast design withstood four explosions, which generated static overpressures ranging from 16 to 47 kPa (2.3 to 6.8 psi). A third program at the request of MSHA evaluated the effectiveness of using pressurized grout bags (Packsetter bags) along the mine roof and ribs in lieu of floor and rib hitching for a standard-type solid- concrete-block seal. This program was initiated to address an urlusual geological mining condition encountered when building seals in entries where required rib hitching is not a viable option due to soft friable coal. Results showed that the use of these quick-setting grout-filled Packsetter bags pressurized internally to 300 kPa (44 psi) not only provides a seal that can withstand a 138-kPa static pressure explosion, but also provides a sealing option where rib hitching is not possible.

As part of a continuing effort to reduce the weight and bulk of equipment that mining personnel must carry underground, the Bureau of Mines and the Mining Enforcement and Safety Administration (MESA) investigated accurate and convenient gas samplers for use by mine inspectors in sampling mine atmospheres. The samplers are septum-stoppered glass vials commonly used for routine blood sampling. These lightweight, compact samplers yield results comparable with those obtained with conventional bottle samplers of 250-ml nominal capacity.

"The Marvel mines 1 and 3 of the Roden Coal Co. are located in the Cahaba field in Bibb County, Ala., nearly southwest from Birmingham, an airline distance of roughly 30 miles. The coal of the Clark seam at this point has some coking properties, but at present it is sold exclusively as a domestic and steaming coal.This paper, which is the second of a series on the washability of Alabama coals, like its predecessor dealing with the Mary Lee seam,5 contains screen-sizing and float-and-sink tests of a representative sample of the raw slack, and slotted-screen tests showing the proportions of flaky particles in certain selected sizes; inasmuch as this coal is not used for coke manufacture, no crushing tests have been made. These data have been obtained in connection with an exhaustive study of coal preparation in Alabama, now being conducted by the United States Bureau of Mines and the University of Alabama with the cooperation of the different coal operators. As the work progresses, other papers will follow containing further data on Alabama coals and giving results obtained in preparing these coals by various methods.The only published investigative work on the Clark seam is that of Forbes,6 who gives a number of sections of this seam in Marvel No. 3 mine with proximate and ultimate analyses of face samples taken in the mine and also some analyses of delivered coal.The available information on this coal indicated that the preparation problem was one of ash reduction. In order to substantiate this information a complete analysis of the 3/4 by 3/16 inch size, and sulphur determinations and ash-fusibility tests of the float-and-sink fractions have been made; these results are given in Tables 1 and 2. As these results also indicate that the preparation problem is one of ash reduction, the tests and discussion have been devoted to that subject."

Chromite deposits in the vicinity of Louise, Troup County, Ga., were studied y the Bureau of Mines from September 1, 1942, to March, 15, 1943. They are about three-fourths of a mile southeast of Louise and 8 miles northeast of La Grange, Troup County, Ga. The existence of chromite deposits in that area has been known for more than 75 years, but no active prospecting was done until World War I. Prospecting continued intermittently' until 1928. The Bureau became interested in the deposits in connection with its strategic minerals investigations during World War II. The chromite in these deposits occurs as grains ranging from "pin-head" size to 3/8-inch and occasionally 1 inch. Some of the material is magnetic, indicating the presence of magnetite. Of the 300 samples taken during the course of the project, 266 were analyzed. Tables showing the analyses accompany this report.

Techniques were developed and circuitry was assembled for measuring the total and volume resistances to the flow of electric current through solid specimens of anthracite. The two-, three-, and four-terminal test methods demonstrated the extreme sensitivity of resistivity to differences in anthracite characteristics and showed response to changes resulting from variations in structure, temperature, and moisture content.

This report contains the results of an analysis of the Logan oilfield, Hocking County, Ohio, and predicts the recovery of oil from the Clinton sand by waterflooding. Core analyses, electrical and radioactivity well-survey logs, reservoir-fluid analysis, and geologic and production data were used for this study. Considered in the evaluation were the reservoir geometry, depth, lithology, continuity of the rock properties, fluid saturations, fluid characteristics, rock wettability, and relative permeability-fluid saturation relationships. The study indicates that a properly engineered waterflood should recover approximately 135 barrels per acre-foot of effective sand. The predicted recovery warrants the initiation of a pilot waterflood in this field.

Permissible electric nine lamps are approved with the. understanding that if actively marketed they will be listed in Bureau of Mines publications so that state mine departments, compensation bureaus, mine operators, miners, and others interested in safety equipment for mines may know the permissible lamps available and the important safety features of each. The last list of permissible electric mine lamps was issued as Report of Investigations 33045 in June 1936, a supplement to Bulletin 332.6 All lamps described in Bulletin 332 are either obsolete or have been materially modified, as covered by extensions of the original approvals. These modified lamps and the new designs approved since 1930-totaling 12 cap lamps and 23 lamps of miscellaneous types-comprise the present list of actively marketed permissible electric mine lamps. This bulletin presents the Bureau's test requirements and procedure relative to permissible electric mine lamps and describes briefly the lamps, giving tabulated details of each.

This publication contains analyses and related source data for 191 natural gas samples from 22 states and 1 foreign country. Of the total samples, 182 were collected during calendar year 1987. The remainder were collected earlier, but releases granting permission to publish were not received before 1987. All samples were obtained and analyzed as part of Bureau of Mines investigations of the occurrences of helium in natural gases of countries with free market economies. This survey has been conducted since 1917. The analyses published herein were made by mass spectrometer and chromatograph.

The paper includes a short discussion of results, tabular data, and individual analyses of 16 California crude oils. Analyses of other oil from California have been published in Reports of Investigations 25954/, 26085/, 28466/, and 30747/. The samples were obtained by members of the San Francisco office of the Bureau of Mines.
