Seven evaluation tests with blast furnace iron bearing burden materials are described. The effects of pellet strength, fines in the burden, decreasing slag volume, pellet size, eliminating stone with superfluxed sinter, and eliminating stone by prefluxing the pellets were determined. Fluxed pellets and fluxed sinter made with the same ore fines were compared. The tests were conducted under cooperative agreements between the Bureau of Mines and North American steel companies. The objectives were to improve blast furnace practice, expand and develop understanding of the operation and theory, quantify the effects of changes, and explore the limitations of operability. This work was part of an extensive program of blast furnace research in experimental blast furnaces at Bruceton, PA conducted in the years 1958 to 1967.

An accurate knowledge of the water content of oil-bearing sands4/ now is recognized as an important factor in calculations of the flow of oil through the sands to producing wells and in the estimation of oil reserves, To this end the Bureau of Mines laboratories are using a method that is an adaptation of the A. S. T. M. method of determining the water content of petroleum products (1).5/ However, the apparatus and technique have been altered slightly, as described in this report, to increase the precision of the method without affecting the simplicity of procedure or speed with which determinations may be made. Until recently petroleum engineers, when estimating reserves assumed that the entire pore volume of the oil-saturated parts of producing sands was filled with oil, as it was generally thought that the oil, water, and gas in any formation had separated completely during geologic time into distinct layers because of their difference in density. In 1929 Lindthrop and Nickolaeff (12) reported experimental results from which they concluded that 22 to 30 percent of the pore volume of producing sands in the Grozay district, Russia, was filled with water when the fields were discovered. Since that time numerous investigators (5, 7, 8, 10) have found evidence of water in the sands of now oil-producing fields and old fields that never produced water with the oil.

"INTRODUCTION Silica and kaolin (a layer aluminosilicate) are among the major constituents of most coal mine dusts.' Whereas kaolin is cytotoxic in vitro but nonfibrogenic in vivo in humans and experimental animals,2-4 the cytotoxic and fibrogenic potential of silica is rather well established.5 Wallace and co-workers 6-8 have studied the cytotoxic potentials of both native and surface-modified silica and kaolin and inferred that retoxification is slow in the case of occluded silica vis-à-vis native silica. Recent epide¬miological studies indicate that silica concentration alone in a mine dust, as determined by transmission IR spec¬troscopy (TIRS), does not correlate well with the pro¬gression of coal workers' pneumoconiosis. 9 This obser¬vation has led to the suggestions that silica particles occluded by clays such as kaolin may not be fibrogenic. This proposal requires accurate estimations of kaolin, silica, and occluded silica. The current method of silica analysis in a mine dust sample employs TIRS of the 797- cm -1 band of silica, although its accuracy, as well as that of x-ray diffraction studies, is no better than 25 % , even in a laboratory-generated dust.° In this paper we have employed the techniques of diffuse reflectance spectros¬copy (DRS) and photoacoustic spectroscopy (PAS), in conjunction with an FT-IR spectrometer, for the quan¬titative determination of silica in laboratory-generated silica-kaolin mixtures.One of the main advantages of DRS and PAS is that, in these techniques, problems arising from sample prep¬aration of the KBr-based disks used in TIRS are avoided. There are, however, several other considerations (e.g., particle size effects and saturation phenomenon) which complicate the use of DRS and PAS for quantitative work. 10-25 In this paper, we have carried out a systematic comparison of the quantitative abilities of the two tech¬niques, as applied to the silica-kaolin mixtures, with par¬ticular attention to the saturation behavior of several bands with different absorption coefficients. In particular, we show that a weaker band for silica at 1875 cm-1 is suitable for quantitative purposes, and that quantitative accuracy is higher in DRS than in PAS. A laboratory electrophoresis column was designed to separate pyrite from fine coal by utilizing an observed difference in the electrophoretic mobilities of the two materials in water. The apparatus worked well when tested with synthetic mixtures of coal and pyrite, but some modifications in design and procedure were necessary to provide a sharper separation. After these changes were made, the column was tested with a high-pyritic-sulfur raw coal sample. The column successfully fractionated the sample, removing not only the pyritic refuse, but a siliceous refuse as well. The invest ion demonstrated on a laboratory scale that pyrite and other impurities can be separated from fine coal by electrophoresis.

A metal diaphragm pressure relay system was constructed to measure vapor pressures of the metal halides, oxyhalides, and other substances at temperatures up to 700° or 800° C. The vapor pressure of arsenic (III) oxide (As2O3) was determined to verify the reliability of the apparatus for such measurements. The data for the liquid AS2 Os (2820 to 4830 C) are represented by the equation, log Pmm = 6.875 - 2,929/T, from which the normal boiling point was calculated to be 461° C. The heat of vaporization calculated from this equation was 13.40 ±0.09 kcal/g mole As4OS and is essentially constant over the interval studied. The melting point of the octahedral arsenic (III) oxide was determined to be 278° C from the inter-section of the solid and liquid vapor pressure curves, A thermal analysis apparatus is also described by which melting and transition temperatures could be checked by a method independent of vapor pressure data. The melting points of the monoclinic and octahedral forms were determined to be 314.4 ±1.4° C and 278 ±5° C, respectively.

"A relationship exists between the quartz contents in the underground coal nine airborne dust samples and those in the coal and host rocks that are mined [17, 18, 19] The prescribed method for quartz analysis in respirable airborne coal dust samples is the MSHA P-7 method. Accurate quartz analysis procedures are needed for bulk samples in order to predict the potential quartz content in airborne nine dust, which in turn will aid the design of quartz dust control procedures during mining. thereby reducing the airborne quartz dust in underground atmospheres. The requirements of this method are that the amount of quartz is the sample be less than 250ug, and the total sample weight less than 2,500 ug. Unlike with airborne dust samples, there are no limitations to the available mass of bulk samples. However, these are no standard procedures for the preparation of bulk samples for scanning or prescribed methods for quartz analysis. The NIOSH and MSHA methods are certified for roped* dust and the acceptance of these methods for bulk samples assumes that the bulk samples will be reduced to the conditions specified for respirable dust samples. An alternative method is X-ray diffraction, which provides higher average quartz values than those obtained from P-7 method for the same samples.An investigation was carried out to determine the optimal procedure for preparing the bulk samples for the IR and XRD analyses. In this paper, the investigations on the effects of calibration, particle sizes, matrix composition, interferrous, and behavior of the filter substances on IR, XRD and FTIR results are presented. The error introduced by the presence of kaolinite and a new sample asking procedure to reduce it are discussed. The problems experienced with conventional sample holders for scanning were eliminated with the design and development of a new hollow sample holder. Quantitative comparison of quartz determinations by IR, XRD and MR methods on coal, roof and floor rocks, and airborne dust samples are presented. The important factors affecting the results of quartz analysis methods are: 1) bulk sample preparation for obtaining representative and homogeneous analysis samples: 2) particle size distributions of the analysis samples and calibration standards; 3) qualitative matrix composition of the analysis sample; 4) matching calibration standards to analysis sample; 5) substrates for sample deposition during analysis sample preparation; 6) procedures for analysis sample mounting; 7) selection of proper portions of she response profile for insanity measurement; and 8) interferences of spurious phases with the critical analyses. The recommendations of this study are important to enable comparisons and interpretations of analysis and research results."

Samples of mine atmospheres collected by Federal coal-mine inspectors during their inspections and investigations of coal mines, in accordance with provisions of the Federal Coal Mine Safety Act (66 Stat. 692; 30 U. S. C., sees. 451-483) are analyzed routinely by chemical methods at Bureau of Mines laboratories. When samples collected in open workings of nongassy coal mines at points not less than 12 inches from the roof, face, or rib contain 0.25 percent or more methane, the act requires the operator, during operation of such mine, to comply with the provisions of sec. 209, Title II, of the act, which pertain to gassy mines. The methane con-tents of such samples are determined by a physical method based on infrared absorption spectrometry to provide an independent check on analytical results obtained by chemical methods. This information circular describes the equipment and procedures used by the Bureau for determining low concentrations of methane in coal mine atmospheres by infrared absorption spectrometry. The U.S. Bureau of Mines explored new methods and technology for extracting coal from the Appalachian Mountain region of the Eastern United States. These methods were aimed at extracting coal from thin seams and focused on the use of "roof-fall-tolerant" (RFT) mining concepts. These methods could be used on existing, abandoned highwalls or in conjunction with new highwall mining. The research was conducted using small-scale and quasi-full-scale physical models to obtain experimental results. Details are provided on (1) the quasi-full-scale model for cross-ridge mining, (2) the quasi-full-scale model for down-ridge mining, (3) the test results of these models, and (4) recommendations for future research. Significant results include demonstration of the RFT concept, a discussion of expected coal produced from these methods, and recommendations for future research.

"Scientific, engineering, and biomedical research teams synergystically developed major topical research areas in the Respirable Dust Center. Descriptions of their interactions and resulting accomplishments demonstrate how cooperative research within and among these study groups benefits the overall respirable dust research and practical application needs of the mineral industries.The development of a state-of-the-art small animal inhalation exposure facility suitable for studies of fresh and aged coal mine dust, a major goal of this research group, will contribute toward the GTCRD goal of advancing the understanding of causative mechanisms for the occupation-related lung impairments and the airway diseases of mine and mill workers. Such understanding includes improved definition of the role of various aspects of the lung environment (e.g., surfactant and the mucociliary system) in the disposition and toxicity of respirable dust, comprehensive characterization of the role of the pulmonary alveolar macrophage (PAM) and its secretory products on the development of dust-related lung disorders, and an expanded search for methods to reduce the toxicity of respirable dust both before and after it enters the lung. The National Academy of Sciences has recommended, in Measurement and Control of Respirable Dust in Mines, that respirable dust research should include study of the behavioral and constitutional factors affecting individual susceptibility to workers' pneumoconiosis occupational disease and the development of methods for detecting the potential onset of pneumoconiosis earlier and more conclusively than can be done using X-ray methods. These recommendations have guided the research group in its goals of establishing and disseminating a scientific protocol for standardizing the inhalation testing for all research objectives within the Generic Center which involve small animal exposures and implementing the infrastructure necessary to make lung tissues obtained during inhalation studies available to all researchers within the Generic Center."

To furnish the information frequently requested by producers and suppliers as to the fuel requirements of the Federal Government , the Bureau of Mines , with the cooperation of the consuming departments and establishments , has collected the data herein , showing the Government's fuel consumption during the fiscal year ended June 30 , 1930. The following tables show the quantities and kinds of fuels consumed by the Federal Government in each of its departments and their principal branches , in each State , and in Alaska , Hawaii , Panama Canal Zone , Porto Rico , and the Virgin Islands . The separate departments and establishments were asked to supply information for each Federal building or other plant and , as to vessel fuel , the amount loaded at each port of supply . Fuels consumed in internal combustion engines are not included . The report does not include fuels used by Post Offices of the fourth class , since their fuels are not purchased by the Federal Government but are covered by an allowance in each case for light and heat . In some cases the data supplied represent receipts , which are approximately equivalent to consumption . The present study is believed to be the first effort to bring together the data representing the Government's requirements for the various fuels which it consumes . Figures showing the coal consumed by the Federal Government were gathered for the year 1922. These data are shown in an article by O. P. Hood and R. H. Kudlich of the Bureau of Mines , contributed as a chapter to " Industrial Coal ; Purchase , Delivery and Storage , " published by the American Engineering Council . The figures of coal consumption presented herewith are approximately comparable with those published for 1922 , a relatively small difference being due to the fact that the 1922 figures include the Philippine Islands and all other territory in which any coal was consumed by the Government . At the present time , the only data on Government fuel consumption that are published regularly are those compiled by E. B. Swanson , chief economist of the petroleum economics division of the Bureau of Mines . These are published annually by the Bureau of Mines in " Sources and Distribution of Major Petroleum Products , Atlantic Coast States , " and by the bureau in cooperation with the American Petroleum Institute in the annual " National Survey of Fuel Oil Distribution . " It is believed that the data herewith will prove of interest and value to the fuel industries as well as to Government consumers and that it will also afford a basis for measuring future trends in the use of the various fuels by the Federal Government . Figures showing the quantities of the various kinds of fuels consumed by each of the executive departments and independent establishments , are given in Table 1. The motor gasoline which is being marketed in the United States this summer is apparently more volatile than the gasoline sold a year ago. In fact the average volatility of this summer's gasoline is almost the same as the average volatility of the gasoline marketed last winter. During the past seven years the Bureau of Mines has made semi-annual surveys of the gasoline marketed in the United States, the survey just completed being the fourteenth in the series. The cities in which samples have been collected have been chosen as representative of the more important marketing territories as it is obviously impracticable to obtain a sample of every gasoline sold in the entire country.

This paper is one of a buries being prepared by the Bureau of Mines on mining methods and costs at various mines in the United States, and is a description of the mining practice at Ajo, Ariz., where the New Cornelia Branch of the Phelps Dodge Corporation mines copper ore from an open pit, and operates a concentrator for the treatment of the ore thus mined. Brief history of photography Silver- based photographic materials are made for many applications that require different photochemical and physical response characteristics and a wide variety of formats and sizes. All of these products are laminates consisting of a surface-treated support and bonded gelatin layers. Two basic types predominate - films and papers. Films have transparent or translucent plastic supports (mostly cellulose tri-acetate and polyester), while papers have mostly a paper core coated with polyethylene resin layers on both sides (RC type). The front layer contains white titanium dioxide to provide high reflectivity and the back layer a matting agent. However, a few so-called fiber base papers are still supplied. These have a high quality paper base coated with a baryta layer ; i.e. a gelatin layer containing white barium sulfate. The manufacture of photographic film and paper supports requires special procedures and equipment, because of the severe requirements for chemical purity, optical integrity and uniformity (see Table 1 on page 10 for a list of the principal makers of film and paper supports).

The volumetric determination of uranium according to the method of Sill and Peterson (6),3/ which uses cerate oxidimetry after the separation of interferences such as sulfides and cupferrates, has been used for some time by the Bureau of Mines and gives satisfactory results for many of the samples tested. However, in those instances where the uranium content did not exceed a few tenths of 1 percent and iron was present in the range of 10 to 40 percent (as Fe203),4/ the method was cumbersome and unreliable. The need for a more accurate procedure for the determination of small amounts of uranium in the presence of large amounts of iron, such as in shale or black sands, prompted this investigation. The Bureau desired that materials containing as little as 60 p.p.m. of uranium be assayed within reasonable limits of accuracy. One of the primary aims of this work has been to eliminate, as far as possible, the necessity for repeated cup ferron extractions.

This report presents test results, data evaluations, and typical system performance expectations based on wireless electromagnetic propagation measurements performed in the MAGMA Copper Company's San Manuel mine near Tuscon, Arizona during March 30 through April 2 1981. In particular, and at the Bureau's request, this work was coordinated with testing of MF prototype vehicular radios being developed by A.R.F. Products, Inc. with USBM support under Contract H0308004 as part of a system to be marketed by Mine Safety Appliance Co. This testing also employed a prototype vehicular antenna developed by Terry S. Cory, P.E. with USBM upport under previous Contract P0382223. The work was performed under USBM contract J0308012, Propagation of EM Signals in Underground Metal/Non-metal Mines. The authors wish to thank Mr. Hank Seany, Manager of Mines and Mr. Bob Zerga, Mine Superintendent who so kindly arranged for the visit. Particular thanks are given to Mr. Al Metcalf who arranged the logistical details of our underground work, and whoa forward thinking program toward improving general mine communications at MAGMA provided the test-bed context for evaluation of the prototype equipment. Mr. Jiminez's effort was instrumental in performing the testing, and he also provided a detailed understanding of the existing multi-level, multi-frequency trolleyphone system at MAGMA. the authors are also indebted to Dr. Larry Stolarczyk of A.R.F. for numerous detailed consultations on MF technology, and who was present and participated in the majority of the testing. 1.1 GENERAL BACKGROUND ON COPPER MINING AT MAGMA the San Manuel mine is the largest copper mine in the U.S., efficiently extracting copper and molybdenum sulfide from the low-grade San Manuel ore body.This ellipsoidal ore-shell body, with major workings located 2000-3000 feet mbelow the surface, has ore shell thickness varying between 100 and 1000 feet over a longitudinal extent of some 8000 feet, and with major & minor crossectional axes of about 5000 and 2500 feet respectively. The San Manuel mine operation employs in excess of 1000 men/shift with gross ore production between 60,000 and 70,000 tons/day. The mining operation employs the block caving technique; actively being implemented on three levels (2075,2375,2675 feet for haulage, and 2015,2315,2615 product/grizzly levels). The ore haulage is largely via D.C. trolley trains to four (3A,3B,3C,3D) product shafts for skipping to the surface. An additional three shafts at two locations are used to convey men, materials, and developmental rock extractions into and out of the mine. On each haulage level, the trains carry ore an average of two miles one-way from the ore raises to the dump points. 1.2 TOPOLOGICAL BRIEF OF THE HAULAGE LEVELS The 2375 level, on which all the testing was conducted, is illustrated in

The characteristics of leaders under the duress of an emergency are important in the development of emergency planning, training, and in the management of an actual emergency. Knowledge of human behavior is an important component in the formation of emergency strategies. The U.S. Bureau of Mines analyzed the leadership behavior in three underground mine fire escapes. The subjects described their escapes during open-ended interviews. Data were coded according to: (1) evidence of leadership behavior, (2) evidence of lack of leadership behavior, and (3) characteristics of the individual in each group who led the subjects out of the mines. This paper discusses the profile of six individual leadership characteristics which emerged from the data.

The Mary Arnold Mining Co. in 194.3 owned 292 acre s of mineral land in Christian County, Mo., and was one of two companies with milling facilities in southern-central Missouri. Production from this property between 19.37 and 1941 amounted to 1,718 tons of zinc in the form of zinc concentrate. Because of the urgent war requirements for additional zinc and the existing facilities for treatment of zinc-lead ores at these mines, in the winter of 1943-44, the Bureau of Mines investigated the deposits by churn drilling in an endeavor to outline enough ore to maintain production of zinc from this district. Five holes aggregating 1,043 feet were bored.

Since December 10, 1945, the Mount Weather Branch, Mining Division, Bureau of Mines, has been maintaining detailed performance and cost records on the diamond coring bits used throughout the United States by the Bureau of Mince. Figure 1 is a copy of a typical master record sheet showing the scope and type of information recorded for each bit. It is the intention of the Bureau of Mines to issue analytical reports covering the effects of diamond size and quality on the cost of core drilling in different rocks as the information on a significant number of bits used in any one type of rock is accumulated. This report is the first of such a proposed series and is based on the diamond loss and bit costs incurred in the use of 539 AX bits in coring operations on 10 different projects involving 6,097 feet of drilling in gneiss. The 10 projects were located in New York, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey (fig. 2). As a result of the information accumulated on the use of diamond-coring bits in drilling in gneiss, it has been found that the type of bit, the matrix, the percent of core recovered, and the size and quality of diamonds used have a definite effect on the cost of bits per foot drilled.

Longwall double-drum shearers frequently have difficulty complying with the 2.0 mg/m3 dust standard and, therefore, require the use of effective dust controls. However, before dust controls can be implemented effectively, the major individual dust sources must be determined and their relative severity evaluated. The Bureau of Mines has recently developed a sampling strategy, based upon short-term gravimetric sampling, that can identify the major dust sources contributing to the shearer operator's exposure. This technique utilizes approved gravimetric sampling equipment already available to all mine operators and can be performed by two people in 2 days. Five examples, including data analysis, are discussed with respect to various cutting sequences. In addition, typical dust source contributions obtained from studies of double-drum shearer operations regularly in compliance are included. Mine operators can thereby compare their dust source evaluation results with those from these longwalls.
