The purpose of this Bureau of Mines work was to develop information useful in improving copper recovery during copper milling operations. Eleven copper mill tailings from the Western United States were subjected to froth flotation and cyanide leaching to provide an experimental basis for comparing their beneficiation response. Recoveries in flotation concentrates made from mill tailings ranged from 65 to 15 percent, at copper grades of 13 and 2.2 percent, respectively. Liberated copper sulfide minerals present in two samples were readily recovered by laboratory froth flotation. Nine of the samples were less amenable to froth flotation because of physical locking between copper sulfide minerals and gangue. Correlations among tailings indicated that recovery of sulfide copper by flotation was directly related to the sulfide copper content. Empirical equations derived from flotation data provided average values for unrecoverable copper and for recovery efficiency. Flotation response of copper mill tailings may be predicted from the equations. Data from cyanide leaching provides an equation describing the limiting high values for removal of copper by this method.

Consumable-electrode arc melting is now accepted throughout the industry as the best method for producing ingots of zirconium, titanium, molybdenum, and their alloys. In addition, the technique is widely used in laboratories for fusing samples of such metals as hafnium, chromium, tantalum, columbium, and thorium. The production of consumable electrodes from these metals presents some rather difficult problems, the accepted industrial solution being the use of heavy powder-metallurgy-type presses. This paper summarizes information on fabrication of consumable electrodes by this and alternative means, such as sintering, nippling, and welding lightly pressed compacts of scrap metal. A possible saving of considerable capital investment is shown in the case of sintered compacts. The electrical circuit components of a pilot sintering unit are analyzed. INTRODUCTION The consumable-electrode arc-melting process has been accepted by most of the industry as the best method at present for producing high-quality pure or alloy in-got from sponge titanium or zirconium. This technique is not particularly new, having been patented by Von Bolton (l)3/ in 1909 for melting tantalum. However, it has been applied to industrial-scale operation only in the last few years. Among the important contributions to this technique are the work of Kroll (2) and Parke and Ham (3) and the work reported by the Office of Naval Research (4). The Bureau of Mines-has added considerably to the knowledge of this process (5-9).

Various methods of making leakage tests have been tried during a study of losses in the transmission of natural gas. This work has been carried on by the Bureau of Mines in cooperation with the Natural Gas Association of America. Results of tests show that the "shut-in pressure-drop" method described by Rawlins2 is the most accurate and reliable; therefore its use is recommended. This paper describes a graphic method for computing the rate of leakage from the fall in pressure and change in temperature determined by the "shut-in pressure-drop" method of testing. METHOD OF MEASURING PRESSURE DROP The gas is "shut in" the line to be tested and is not allowed to escape except through existing leaks. The leakage causes the pressure in the line to fall. The change in pressure is obtained with a dead weight gage. Approximate results may also be obtained from readings on a good spring test gage. Numerous tests show that the dead weight gage is more sensitive to small changes in pressure than spring gages.

The research to be described is directed to the construction of an instrument that detects methane in air. The principle on which it is based is that methane gas absorbs infrared radiation in the wavelength range of about 3.2 to 3.4 micron. Solid state p-n junctions of composition In, .97Ca.03As emitting radiation in a band centered at 3.3 micron were grown by liquid epitaxy on InAs. Fight separate growth cycles and a total of 200 diodes were measured to determine total power, wavelength peak, spectral. half width and reproducibility of the method. In order to compensate for temperature changes, dual emitter systems (one InGaAs, and one InAs diode) mounted on the same TO-5 header were made. These devices were imaged, using a folded optical path cell, on large area InAs detectors, grown by a planar diffusion technique. In the 0-50°C range the primary temperature sensitivity is in the InAs detector rather than in the emitters. Several methods to reduce the overall temperature sensitivity to within acceptable limits were demonstrated. Humidity was shown to have a negligible effect on the measurements.

The Bureau of Mires in its investigations of gas masks for use in mines and allied industries has studied and developed various types of masks for protection against noxious uses and furies that may be present in atmospheres encountered in mines, metallurgical works, chemical and other industries. As a result of these investigations, the Bureau issued a schedule5 of tests under which manufacturer who voluntarily submit masks for examination and test, are issued an approval certificate for masks that meet the Bureau's specifications. In the Bureau's schedule, masks arc classified by types of gases removed, as type A masks for protection against acid gases; B; organic vapor; C, ammonia; D, carbon monoxide; E, smoke, dust, and mist; F, special gases; combination types, and type N, for protection in air against all gases, vapors, and smokes. The purpose of this paper is to describe the physical and chemical tests that were conducted on a type N mask, the protective principles and construction of the essential elements of the canister and attachments, and the uses and limitations of this type of mask. The mask tested is known as the all-service mask, manufactured by the Mine Safety Appliances Co., Pittsburgh, Pa;, and was approved (approval No. 1403) by the Bureau on July 1, 1924, for protection from all classes of poisonous vapors, gases and smokes in air.

"INTRODUCTION Mine fires have occurred since underground mining of minerals began, and they are still occurring. The technical literature is replete with papers relating to mine fires.Means and methods for controlling and extinguishing mine fires and preventing explosions and other accidents require the collection and analyses of samples of the atmospheres surrounding the fire. Such atmos¬pheres are complex mixtures of gases (1, 3, 4, 15, 21, 23).3/SUMMARYExperiences at mine fires (1, 3, 4, 15, 21, 23) have proved conclusively that mine-air analyses furnish the only means of judging what is going on in a mine fire area. Mine-air analyses give evidence of conditions that require immediate protection, govern the order and control the manner in which a fire is fought, show the necessity of bulkheads and establish the places to construct them, indicate whether or not a fire is being controlled or is being extinguished, and govern procedure in sealing and unsealing mine fires.It is commonly believed that danger to life and property from mine-fire atmospheres is greatest in coal mines; this is true only to the degree that the explosion hazard is greater in coal mines than in noncoal mines because of the presence of combustible gases. The problem of gas poisoning is greater in noncoal mines because of the more frequent occurrence of poisonous and innocuous gases, oftentimes the lack of controlled ventilation, and usually greater difficulties in sealing mine-fire areas. Sulfide minerals present a serious hazard in many metal-mine fires when sulfur dioxide is formed. The country rock or ore body itself may contain or be limestone, which may be calcined. Emanations of carbon dioxide are found."

"It is generally agreed that dust characteristics play a role in the development of Coal Workers' Pneumoconiosis (CWP). Unfortunately, there is a serious lack of information on what the characteristics of mine dust actually are and how they vary among different mining regions, coal seams, etc. This paucity of data can generally be attributed to the serious problems encountered in collecting sufficiently large quantities of dust for conventional analytical procedures.Personal samplers are widely used in coal mines for regulatory and enforcement purposes. Generally, these provide information only on the total (respirable) dust loading in the mine atmosphere and on the mineral matter (primarily quartz) content of the respirable dust. A procedure has been developed by which samples collected with a slightly modified personal sampler can be analyzed for particle size distribution, total mineral matter content and elemental composition, in addition to the standard mass and quartz measurements. These analyses could readily be performed on a routine basis. Shape analysis by Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) could easily be included if appropriate shape criteria are established. Extension of the procedure to include the determination of complete size/specific gravity (composition) distributions is quite straightforward provided sufficiently large samples (at least 10 mg) can be collected. Typical sample sizes for a personal sampler carried by a miner for one shift range from about 0.5 to 2 mg.The basic procedure was developed and evaluated using synthetic mine dust prepared in the laboratory. Field tests in three working mines in Pennsylvania and West Virginia have confirmed the applicability of the approach to the real world. Particle size distribution measurements on mine dust collected in the modified personal sampler were found to agree closely with the results of simultaneous in situ measurements obtained using cascade impactors."

"The Bureau of Mines receives many inquiries concerning favorable areas in which to prospect for gold, procedure to be followed, equipment required, and allied subjects. This circular has been prepared for use in reply to these inquiries.Interest in gold mining and prospecting for gold remains steady. From time to time many people take to the field to search for new gold deposits. A large percentage of them have had no previous experience in prospecting for lode gold; this paper has been written with the hope that it might assist these newcomers.A majority of the metal mines in the United States have been discovered by qualified prospectors who were searching for valuable minerals at the time. Chance, however, always has played a large part in finding mineral deposits. Some of the discoveries of the past were made by men on other errands, such as rounding up burros or hunting game. Accidental discoveries of ore bodies have been made in building roads and trails and in excavating for mine struc¬tures. Evidence of ore has been brought to the surface by burrowing animals and by ants; gold found in the craws of fowl has led to discoveries of deposits. Important discoveries have been made by men who had no knowledge of rocks or minerals; on the other hand, many ore bodies have been found by experienced prospectors, sometimes after hundreds of untrained men had already passed over the ground.The prospector who carries on his work diligently and intelligently is of course more likely to be rewarded for his efforts than the lazy or unintelligent worker; nevertheless, it is obvious that if valuable deposits are not present at the place being prospected none will be found. Conscientious and painstaking efforts to trace gold to its source usually disclose nothing more valuable than some narrow, unworkable seams; however, many deposits that were developed into profitable mines were found by this method of prospecting. Although some prospectors have made several lucky strikes, many others have spent their working lives searching for gold without finding anything worth while. Probably only one prospector out of several thousand ever finds anything worth developing. Moreover, only 1 out of every 300 or 400 properties developed becomes a profitable mine.Prospecting was begun in the Western States in the fifties as the miners looked for the source of gold found in placers. The search for gold has been continuous since that time; the number of prospectors in the field at any one time, however, has varied greatly. Except in some desert regions, practicallyall of the placer fields now being worked were discovered by old timers; more-over, most of the important gold districts were found by early prospectors. Important discoveries of lode mines, however, have been made from time to time. Most of the area in the mining regions of the West has been searched many times by prospectors, and nearly all of the easily found deposits have been located, but it is reasonable to expect that new gold mines will continue to be found. Most of the future discoveries undoubtedly will be of deposits that do not outcrop. Prospecting for such deposits requires considerable digging.Several important discoveries were made in 1934. One of these, the Rogers-Gentry gold mine at the edge of Antelope Valley in Los Angeles County, Calif., was found by an experienced prospector on an old patented homestead a number of miles from the nearest producing mine. The initial discovery at this mine was an iron-stained, decomposed, silicous limestone outcrop, with no vein structure evident at the surface, near a small, barren quartz outcrop and a water seep. Another discovery, the Silver Queen gold mine, in the same general region and near Mojave, Calif., was found by an experienced miner on an open fraction 400 by 1,400 feet in size between two old properties that were thought to have been worked out years ago. "According to the dictionary,3 an accident is an event that takes place without one's foresight or expectation, often an undesigned, sudden, and unforeseen occurrence of an afflictive or unfortunate character. However, actual experience with accidents, the second most important cause of death in the United States,4 and a more extensive and scientific inventigation of their causes indicate that from 75 to 90 per cent of accidents are avoidable.5 This is borne out by the results of a three-year study of the accident records of 64,000 motor vehicle operators in New York6 which show that certain drivers are prone to accidents, that accident experience is traceable to certain causes, and that accidents don't just ""happen,"" It is estimated that 97,000 persons were killed by accidents in the United States in 1929 and 15,000,000 were injured. Of these about 23,000 deaths were due to so-called industrial accidents. In a list of accident rates by industries, compiled by the National Safety Council7 from reports of member establishments, mining heads the list, in both frequency (74.43 per 1,000,000 man-hours worked) and severity (9.9 days lost per 1,000 man-hours worked). These figures are very much higher than for any other industry; theindustries showing figures most comparable to mining are meat packing with a frequency rate of 55.94 and a severity rate of 1.47, construction with a frequency rate of 50.41 and a severity rate of 4.62, and refrigeration with a frequency rate of 43.35 and a severity rate of 3.04.While there is no way to determine the actual cost of all accidents from a monetary standpoint, estimates indicate that the cost will run into hundreds of millions of dollars annually.Cost of accidents in metal mines.- The United States Bureau of Mines obtains accurate figures on the number of lost-time nonfatal accidents as well as fatal accidents in the metal-mining industry.8 In 1926 the metal mines employed 127,823 men; 430 men were killed and 30,350 men received lost-time but nonfatal injuries as a result of accidents. Each of these fatal and nonfatal injuries averaged 114 days lost time, computing a fatality as 6,000 days lost time. This is equivalent to 3,523,944 days time lost due to accident, or at $5 per day per man, to a wage loss of $17,619,720. Deducting one-ninth of this figure for compensation paid, the metal miner loses in wage annually about $15,700,000, or about $122 per individual. This average loss per individual includes the cost of fatal accidents reckoned at 6,000 days or $30,000, but even if the loss in time due to fatal accidents be deducted, the average cost to each individual metal miner each year for nonfatal accidents is about $32. Estimating the loss to the metal-mine employer as about the same as that to the employee, the annual cost of metal-mine accidents to the employer is about $15,700,000 and to the employer and miner is $31,400,000."

The first study of this subject hits been made in Illinois, but as opportunity affords, similar studies will be made in other States. It is hoped that the data obtained will assist the coal-mining industry to standardize the forms of leases, and so avoid some of the abstruse and ambiguous clauses which slay be found in many of them and the consequent liability of costly litigation. In some of the publications of the Illinois Mining; Investigations prepared under a cooperative agreement with the U. S. Bureau of Mines, the Illinois State Geological Survey and the Engineering Experiment Station of the University of Illinois, the coal areas of the 'State have been divided into eight geological districts, each district being treated separately. This report covers District No. VI of that classification, and it is hopped that studies of the other districts will be completed in the near future and similar results published.

Demand for arsenic exceeded supply, and major domestic and foreign producers allocated available supplies to customers for the fourth consecutive year. Major demand for arsenic was about evenly divided between industrial chemicals and agricultural chemicals. Legislation and Government Programs.-Effective April 1, 1981, taxes were collected from companies producing and importing 42 chemicals and petroleum products designated as hazardous, The revenue was used to begin funding of the 5-year, $1.6 billion "superfund" being established under Public Law 96-510, the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act, designed to help clean up spills of hazardous substances throughout the United States. As hazardous chemicals, arsenic metal and arsenic trioxide were taxed at the rate of $4.45 and $3.41 per short ton, respectively.

In the event of a disaster, the 10-minute device would be donned immediately. The miner would then proceed to the stored 60-minute unit and plug it into the 10-minute unit. For the 10-minute unit, a breathing circuit was developed in which air is passed through the KO2 bed twice per respiration. "Reflector button signs similar to those used to attract the attention of motorists on the public highways at night are now being used to good advantage by a few mining companies in underground workings for danger, warning, direction, and safety signs and signals. Most safety signs and signals used in underground mining are of the electric light painted-board, or enameled or porcelain metal-plate,type, all of which have good features as well as some disadvantages; among the disadvantages are: The filament of electric incandescent lamps is prone to ""burn out"" occasionally anti usually the lamps are not replaced promptly; painted-board and enameled or porcelain metal-plate signs can be seen only a short distance and often are ""passed up"" unintentionally by employees, consequently these signs do not always serve the purposes intended and may be the cause of injury or death through failure to warn the men of danger.The advantage of using reflector button signs in mines or underground workings is that the cap lamps or headlights with which employees and locomotives generally are equipped, if directed at these buttons will reflect the light back to its source, and if they are arranged to spell words of warning or direction, or if suitable symbols are used, they are discernible and can be read at a distance of several hundred feet. The distance the light is reflected depends largely on the color of the buttons used. The reflector buttons also in many instances can be used to good advantage in conjunction with other methods previously mentioned.Several types of reflector buttons are available, among them the flat-lens type with mirrored metallic foil or plate back, the facet-cut-lens type with a mirrored metallic foil or plate back, and a type with a hemispherical smooth lens with a parabolic mirrored metal back. Lenses for the different types are available in several colors. Crystal, amber, red, and green are the colors of the buttons used to the greatest extent in underground signs up to the present time. These buttons may be had in different sizes, also.It has been observed that crystal-colored buttons reflect light the greatest distance (about 1,000 feet) and red-colored buttons the least (about 500 feet); reflection from green and amber colors ranges somewhere between the red and crystal colors in distance.Reflector buttons for underground use should be designed to reflect light a maximum distance; they should be made of materials that resist oxidation and corrosion, especially of the mirrored backs, and should be relatively free of protruding parts or projections that will collect dust.Reflector buttons approximately 3/14 inch in diameter seem best suited for underground use in general because fewer reflector units are required for a signal of given size."

A process is evaluated for recovering metallurgical-grade manganese are from the low-grade manganiferous iron ores of the Cuyuna Range, Minnesota. The process, developed by the Bureau of Mines, employs high-temperature sulfatization of the are to form manganese sulfate and reduction of the are to convert the iron to a magnetic oxide. The roasted ore is water-leached to dissolve the manganese sulfate, which is then separated from the leach residue, is crystallized, and is calcined to produce the manganese product. Iron is recovered from the leach residue by magnetic separation, and is pelletized and calcined to produce byproduct iron ore pellets. The fixed capital cost for a plant yielding a product containing 100 tons of manganese per day is $19.6 million on a mid-1970 basis when the raw are contains 4.84 percent manganese. The estimated operating cost of the plant is $211 per ton of contained manganese. Graphs are included to show the effects of ore cost and varying manganese content of the raw ore on the estimated operating cost.

A computer model was created that generates contact data by means of simulation while altering several variables associated with the machine and its operator. These variables include work environment, the operator's anthropometry, work posture, choice of risky work behavior, and the machine's appendage velocity. In the model, a contact means two or more objects intersecting or touching each other, e.g., the appendage colliding with the operator's hand, arm, head, or leg. This report documents the code development of special features of the computer model, random virtual human motions and behaviors, which made it possible for researchers to study hazardous interactions, such as contacts between the operator and machine. The original idea for random virtual human motions began with the need for a model that, when simulated, would experimentally mimic machine and human actions that could cause actual injuries or fatalities in the workplace. Injury incident investigation reports do not usually contain enough information to aid in studying this problem, and lab experiments with human subjects are also not feasible because of safety issues and ethical issues. Early investigation that evaluated the feasibility of random motions resulted in a primary programming structure and building blocks for code expansion. Basic motions and standard derivation data provided random parameters for the operator's movement in the random motion code. Experimenting with basic motions in preliminary models helped researchers devise a random motion technique that worked with xyz motion parameter values from basic motion parameters. Both values were the building blocks used in motion commands that comprised the core of the random motion code. When the code is executed in a three-dimensional computer model, it generates realistic starting positions for the operator's (virtual human) body and body parts and realistic motions mimicking a work sequence with a valid range of variation in movements. Researchers developed several rules for the random motion technique that, when applied, will maintain directional integrity of a virtual human's basic motions. From previous research, researchers formulated the algorithm that determines the behavior during machine operation. The decision algorithm was needed by the random motion code to randomly select what behavior to use for a simulation execution for a realistic representation of the operator's motions and risky behaviors during work tasks. The operator's chance of avoiding the moving appendage was also a concern to ensure that data reflecting a near-miss would not be considered a contact. Therefore, to filter a database obtained from simulations for actual contacts, it was necessary to track the operator's field of view and determine from this information when the appendage is in and out of the operator's view. NIOSH researchers successfully applied random motions and risky behaviors to examine the speed range of a roof bolter machine appendage for different workplace scenarios and compare statistically which is most likely to cause contacts (and possible injuries) to miners. Researchers in this study believe that the use of such simulations, treated with advanced statistical procedures, are extremely useful tools to evaluate the hazards of tasks where it is not possible to perform experiments with human subjects.

The location of trapped miners from their seismic signals will be in- accurate if we assume the P-wave propagation velocity is a constant. P- wave velocities are anything but constant in regions about mines, so some calibration is necessary to obtain more accurate seismic locations. The reference event method compares the time arrivals of signals generated by the miners with those previously recorded from a reference or calibration event in the vicinity of the miners. This method locates the miners' position relative to the calibration source. Hence, the location of the miners is absolute if the reference event position is known absolutely, usually from surveys and mine maps. Advantages resulting from the system, besides greater accuracy, are locations independent of the velocity model assumed, the same solution from the full array and from any subset of four or more seismometers in the array (three if the miners' depth is known), fewer seismometers required, and no complex computers required for analysis. VELA Uniform experience shows that the accuracy of locations of teleseismic explosions and earthquakes is improved by an order of magnitude over locations computed from average travel time curves. Each calibration event is applicable only over a limited range. We recommend a field test of the method at a mine to measure its location accuracy, the range of effectiveness for each calibration event, the number of seismometers needed, and the number of reference events required per mine. From these experiments we could decide whether the reference event method was useful and, if so, what form a practical rescue system would take.

Problem: Incident investigation reports do not usually contain enough information to aid in studying boom arm vertical speed for roof bolting machines to determine the impact that appendage speed had on an operator's risk of experiencing a contact. Laboratory experiments with human subjects are also not feasible because of safety and ethical issues. Method Researchers successfully developed a three-dimensional computer model that uses virtual human simulation software as the primary means to gather contact data when the boom arm touches the operator's hand, arm, head, or leg. Results: Data analysis of roof bolter simulations shows that the speed of the boom arm is the most important factor in determining the risk of an operator making contact. Regardless of other variables, contact incidents were always greater when the bolter arm was moving up, greater on the hand, and greater for the boom arm part of the machine. The reason why the subject experiences more contacts when the boom arm is moving up rather than down is that more risky behaviors occur during drilling and bolting when the boom arm is ascending. Based on the data collected, boom speeds greater than 13 in/sec result in a substantial increase in risk to the roof bolter operator of making contact. Speeds less than or equal to 13 in/sec are associated with a more modest relative risk of making contact, which represents a decrease in potential hazard. Impact on Industry: The use of such information can be quite helpful in making recommendations to machine design and task procedures to reduce the likelihood that roof bolter operators will experience injury due to contact with a moving roof bolting machine's boom arm.

In this Bureau of Mines report, the optical detection of fires and explosions is considered fundamentally. The measured spectral radiances from methane-air ignitions are compared with the background irradiances from stray and ambient sources, and with the spectral sensitivites of various sensors. The comparison naturally suggests the optimum spectral ranges and signal processing logic that can uniquely characterize the ignition event. Both ultraviolet (UV) and infrared (IR) are considered. Several alternate sensing methods are proposed and discussed. The development and testing of an IR system designed for use in ignition suppression devices in mines is described.

This report describes the preparation characteristics of the more significant coal beds in Allegheny County, Pa. It is one of a series planned to determine coals suitable for producing metallurgical coke, either as mined or after beneficiation. More than 7 million tons of coal was produced in Allegheny County in 1957. Of this, more than 5 million tons was cleaned mechanically in nine cleaning plants. The Bureau of Mines estimated that, as of January 1, 1953, more than 384 million tons of recoverable coal remained in the county in beds 28 inches or thicker.
