The Bureau of Mines dried and carbonized two wood wastes, one softwood (redwood) and one hardwood (oak), using continuous, vertical entrainment techniques previously developed for use with coal. It was demonstrated that these techniques are readily applicable to wood waste and that appreciable changes in the yields of carbonization products can be obtained by varying operating conditions. A limited amount of experimental work was done on briquetting the charcoals. Firm briquets were formed with oak charcoal, although greater quantities of starch binder than used commercially for kiln-produced charcoal were required. Redwood charcoal did not briquet successfully under the test conditions employed.

This report presents statistical data on individual plants in the fuel- briquet and packaged-fuel industries circularized by the Bureau of Mines, United States Department of the Interior, in its 1957 annual survey. This survey revealed that 17 briquet and 23 packaged-fuel plants were active part or throughout the year. The annual production capacity of the fuel-briquet industry was 3,088,000 net tons, a decrease of 17 percent from 1956. The decline in capacity was caused in part by the permanent retirement of 4 plants and also by the reduction in capacities of 4 other plants. The rate of production of briquet plants also decreased as the industry operated at 35.8 percent of capacity compared with 40.9 percent in 1956. Every operating plant in 1957 had an annual capacity exceeding 25,000 tons.

"Soon after the armistice, an investigation was conducted by the writer on the use of liquid oxygen for explosive purposes in Germany, so far as the conditions of such investigation wore permitted at the time. The results of this inquiry were published in Technical Paper 243, entitled ""Development of Liquid Oxygen Explosives during the War.""Recently, through the courtesy of Dr. C. L. Parsons, former chief chemist of the Bureau, who was visiting Germany, and Mr. Chester L. Benson, of the American Expeditionary Forces in Germany, data was obtained from the Deutsche Oxhydric A. G., Surth near Cologne, (one of the principal manufacturers of liquid oxygen installation) concerning the number of plants which bad been installed in Germany during the period following the armistice. An integrated process for recovering metal from nonmagnetic auto-shredder reject scrap was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Mines. The methods used were air classification, water elutriation, screening, magnetic separation, handpicking, and heavy-media separation. Metal recoveries in this process were projected at 39 percent copper and copper alloys, 53 percent aluminum, 96 percent iron, and 98 percent zinc die cast. An economic evaluation of the conceptual process indicated that a facility designed to reclaim the reject scrap from 200 shredded automobiles daily could be profitable. Total investment in this plant was estimated at $321,000; the discounted rate of return before taxes was 53 percent.

This paper presents plant design and cost estimates for limestone treatment of acid mine water covering a wide range of quality and quantity conditions. The treatment process consists of limestone neutralization, aeration, solids settling, and concentration. The design criteria for the various operation functions are based on pilot plant performance, laboratory data, and established mine water treatment standards. Unit costs have been assumed and are related to general market prices and conditions. These estimates serve as preliminary indicators of what it would cost to construct and operate a mine water treatment plant.

The mine pager phone to public telephone interconnect system permits mine paging telephones to be interconnected with the public phone system, thereby providing emergency and off-hours communications. The system, a push-to-talk, push-to-listen system, is compatible with any mine paging system utilizing dc voltage on the line to enable paging. A tone generator of the proper frequency enables an outside caller to page over mine pager system loudspeakers. A caller inside the mine can make an outgoing call to a preselected, preprogramed number with the use of a proper frequency tone generator. The system includes an automatic hangup timer that restricts the time off-line due to a wrong number or incorrect hangup to 20 seconds and 6 minutes, respectively.

The theoretical study of WF radio communication in coal mines, with particular reference to the rate of loss of signal strength along a tunnel, and from one tunnel to another around a comer is the concern of this paper. Of prime interest are the nature of the propagation mechanism and the prediction of the radio frequency that propagates with the smallest loss. The theoretical results are compared with published measurements. This work was part of an investigation of new ways to reach and extend two-way communications to the key individuals who are highly mobile within the sections and haulageways of coal mines.

Provide an effective method for "soft" soldering aluminum and aluminum alloys using conventional tin-lead solder alloys and flukes. The Problem In the past, it was virtually impossible to solder aluminum and aluminum alloys using standard tin-lead soldering systems (solder and flux) due to the presence of an aluminum oxide surface film which forms instantly on aluminum and aluminum alloys when these are exposed to air. The tenacious and stable oxide film enables aluminum-base materials to maintain their bright luster. But the film also prevents the required wetting and spreading of solder on the substrate, causing the loss of adhesion between the solder and the substrate. Use instantaneous sampling to pinpoint dust sources and to Improve dust control on longwalls. Approach Use a dust monitor developed under a Bureau contract. How It Works Sampling can be done by either a moving or a stationary method. In the "moving' method, the dust monitor is carried by a survey engineer walking at the midpoint of the shearer Dust levels and face position (support number) are taken during all phases of the mining cycle while the shearer is cutting. These measurements can show how changes in airflow along the face, face specific; (rock partings) and cutting sequence (cutting the wedge) variables affect dust levels. In the "stationary sampling" method, the survey engineer stands with the RAM at a fixed location on the face. As the shearer approaches, the dust level and the distance to the shearer are recorded at 10-second intervals. Typically measurements start when the shearer is 20 feet from the sampling position and continue as the shearer passes the position until it is 20 feet away on the other side. Dust profiles around the machine are obtained at several fixed locations along the face only while the shearer is cutting.

"INTRODUCTION This is the first of a series of information circulars dealing with the control of roof and the prevention of accidents from falls of rock and coal. These circulars are being published to focus attention of the coal-mining industry on this most prevalent source of fatalities and injuries and to present factual information that should be helpful in reducing loss from these causes.Records of fatal accidents in the coal mines of the United States, from all causes, have been kept since 1906; during this period approximately 30,000 men have been killed by falls of rock and coal in the bituminous-coal mines, and more than 7,000 men have lost their lives in the Pennsylvania anthracite mines from the same causes. From 1906 to 1930, about 900 men were killed annually by falls of rock and coal in bituminous-coal mines, and about 200 men were killed annually in anthracite mines during the same 25-year period. From 1931 to the present time, the number killed annually from falls of rock and coal has averaged more than 500 men in bituminous-coal mines and about 125 men in Pennsylvania anthracite mines.Numerically the record of accidents from falls of rock and coal shows improvement, but on a percentage basis and on a million-man-hours-of-exposure basis little, if any, improvement has been made during the past 40 years. The cold fact is that, year after year, about 50 percent of all those killed in coal mines in the United States lose their lives from falls of rock and coal."

Reduce longwall intake contamination by controlling respirable dust generated by the stage loader. Approach Install a water-powered scrubber on the stage loader immediately outby the crusher. Dusty air from the crusher is drawn through the scrubber and a clean air discharge is delivered into the primary face airflow. How It Works The contamination of intake air is a significant dust control problem often overlooked on many longwall faces. This dust source contributes to the full shift dust exposure of all face personnel, and thus can significantly affect compliance with Federal regulations. Several sources contribute to contamination; however, dust generated by the stage loader crusher is the single largest source. The breaking action of the crusher generates a tremendous quantity of dust, which mixes with the primary ventilation airstream and is carried down the entire length of the longwall face. The installation of a water-powered scrubber (see diagram) has proven effective in controlling crusher-generated dust. The scrubber is mounted immediately outby the crusher. A series of geological surveys were completed in six coal mines in connection with a Bureau of Mines research program on methane control. The aim of these surveys was twofold: First, to study the overall geology of the coalbed, and second to use the resulting data to evaluate the influence of the geological characteristics of the coalbed on safe and efficient coal extraction. This report explains the advantages of geologic maps and fence diagrams in coal mining, and how the knowledge gained from such geologic investigations of mines can help control many underground problems.

The motor gasoline that is being marketed in the United States this winter (1928-29) is slightly more volatile than that gold a year ago. This characteristic is shown by a slight lowering of the distillation temperatures, particularly at the average initial and 20 per cent boiling points. Daring the past mine and a half years the Bureau of Mines has made semi annual surreys of the gasoline marketed in the United States; the Survey just completed is the nineteenth in the series. The 12 cities in which samples have been collected were chosen as representative of the more important marketing territories, as it was obviously impracticable to obtain a sample of every gasoline sold in the entire country.

A dilute sulfuric-acid leach was developed for extracting lead and copper from lead blast furnace mattes and the chemistry was defined. The possible application of Ferrobacillus ferrooxidans to the problem of salvaging lead and copper from blast furnace mattes was also investigated. Operating conditions were varied to determine their effect on the oxidation and hence extraction of lead and copper from the matte. Conditions varied were temperature, pH, reaction time, aeration in the slurry, and particle size of the matte. A set of optimum conditions were developed that resulted in maximum lead and copper sulfide oxidation. Tests employing these optimum conditions resulted in 82.3 percent of the lead and 98.7 percent of the copper being extracted by a dilute acid leach, while maximum lead and copper extracted using F. ferrooxidans was 69.8 percent of the lead and 78.4 percent of the copper. Tests conducted with a different sample of blast furnace matte indicated that the dilute acid leach might have wide application in extracting lead and copper from other such blast furnace mattes.

Poor mixing of methane and air at coal mine working faces causes fluctuating methane concentrations. If these fluctuations are large enough, methane levels can periodically exceed safe limits, even though the time average methane concentration may be satisfactory. Concentration fluctuations measured underground can result both from variations in methane emission rate and poor mixing. The present paper reports on a statistical analysis of fluctuations at a constant methane emission rate, that is, on fluctuations due only to poor mixing. A full-scale model of a working face was used. Both peak heights and elapsed times between peaks were evaluated. Good mixing was indicated by normal, Poisson, and exponential distributions while poor or incomplete mixing was indicated by log-normal or gamma distributions.

Many different types of structures and materials have been used to build mineral processing facilities throughout the years. Although structure type and building material were not viewed as significant factors affecting the health of employees in these facilities when they were built, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has found that building type can impact respirable dust and noise levels. NIOSH performed a study in which it evaluated three building types: masonry, an open-structure design, and a steel-sided design. This study indicated that an open-structure design (no walls) was superior from both a dust and noise (health) standpoint when compared to the other two structure types. Therefore, companies may want to consider this design when building new structures.

Trailing-cable splices are evaluated for moisture exclusion abilities after repeated travel over shuttle-car sheave wheels. Tests are conducted on cables with jackets made of neoprene, cholrosulphonated polyethylene (CSPE), and nitrile butadiene-polyvinyl chloride (NBR-PVC) to 50° C. The results show that some splice kits are effective as received, others are improved with minor but significant changes, and still others must be redesigned to be effective in underground applications. Laboratory results are compared with actual underground splice results. Recommendations for cable preparation prior to splicing are presented.

"INTRODUCTION Among the hazards that may attend the use of Diesel engines in mines, tunnels, or other underground operations the presence of harmful or objectionable constituents in the exhaust gas must receive due consideration to prevent the formation of unsafe or unhealthful working environments in these places. Previous reports of this series have presented discussions of the composition of exhaust gas from engines in proper mechanical condition, 6/ the effect of adding some of the exhaust gas to the intake air of the engine, 7/ the effect of operation in atmospheres containing natural gas, 8/ and the effect on exhaust-gas composition of conditions that influence the characteristics of fuel injection in Diesel engines. In all these studies the properties of the fuels used were in general conformity with specifications usually recommended by the manufacturers of Diesel engines. In evaluating the physiological significance of the various components of the exhaust in these experiments, the toxic or objectionable gases determined were carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, oxides of nitrogen, and aldehydes. Because of the low sulfur content of' these fuels, compounds such as sulfur dioxide and sulfur trioxide were not determined, although in discussion of the test results attention was directed to the fact that if fuels of higher sulfur content were used, the concentration of such compounds in the exhaust would become a significant factor in establishing the quantity of ventilating air required to furnish satisfactory dilut1on of the exhaust gas in underground working places."

Approach A heat activated stench/tracer gas system was developed which automatically releases the gas mixture into the mine ventilation air. How It Works A canister approximately 12 inches long and 3 inches in diameter is charged with 50 grams of ethyl mercaptan or other appropriate stench gas and 500 grams of instrument detectable Freon. The canister is then pressurized to 100 psi with nitrogen. A disc is used to seal the contents of the canister. A low-temperature alloy designed to melt at a predetermined temperature is used to restrain a spring loaded plunger. Upon exposure to heat, the alloy melts and the plunger is released.
