This paper describes research done to remove apatite (phosphorus) from hematite ultrafine (70% finer than 25 micron) concentrate, recovered by electromagnetic separators at the FST Tailing Recovery Plant located in Chadormalu Iron Ore Complex through reverse froth flotation. As a result, iron and phosphorus content in magnetic concentrate (flotation feed) were 53.52% and 0.58%, respectively. Therefore, to increase the Fe content and decrease the P content of the sample, reverse flotation tests were applied. Chemical reagents used in this research consisted of sodium silicate as a depressant, sodium hydroxide and sodium carbonate as pH regulators, Alke & Dirol as fatty acid collectors and MIBC as frother. Process parameters including dosages of collectors, depressant and frother, preparation times of depressant and collectors, steps and time of frothing and pH range were selected. After doing flotation tests, in optimum condition, dosages of collectors were 1200 g/t, depressant 1200 g/t, pH in the range of 9.5 to 10, preparation time of collectors in the first step was eight minutes and at the other steps, four minutes; the number of frothing steps 4 and frothing time in each stage was three minutes. In this case, it was observed that the amount of phosphorus in the final concentrate was reduced to 0.05%, the Fe content increased from 53.52% to 61.66% and the Fe recovery achieved was 82.21%. The hydrodynamic characteristics of a mechanical flotation cell’s transportation zone have significant impact on its metallurgical performance, especially on coarse particles recovery efficiency. However, how to define and adjust the transportation zone was seldom investigated by researchers. In this paper a method will be introduced to define the boundary of the transportation zone by PIV measurement. It is found that the transportation zone can be extended upwards by enlarging the entire rotor-stator assembly from the bottom of tank and increasing the jet angle of the impeller. Two control methods have been validated in industry tests on KYF-160m3 and KYF-320m3 air-forced mechanical flotation cells. The result shows coarse particles recovery are both improved distinctly. It is suggested that enlarging the top transport boundary is able to helpful to reduce the floating distance of bubbleparticle aggregates, which contribute to improve coarse particle recovery in large flotation cells. Aluminium alloys have gained popularity in many industries due to their high strength and low weight. One shortcoming of aluminium alloys is their poor resistance to abrasion and erosion wear compared to materials such as stainless steels. In this project, aluminium alloy 2014 (AA2014) was coated with a 1.5 mm thick laser-deposited layer composed of silicon, copper, and aluminium with the aim of increasing the wear resistance. The amount of silicon, copper, and aluminium added to each sample was determined by a mixtures model. It was discovered that the Al-Cu system is very sensitive to silicon additions and that wear resistance depends on the primary phase to solidify as well as on the final phase distribution. Two primary phases were identified; alpha aluminium and theta intermetallic. It was observed that the clad layer increases both the hardness and wear resistance of AA2014, and that the material solidifying as primary alpha aluminium displayed a lower hardness but higher wear resistance than the samples containing primary theta phase. All clad layers performed better in terms of wear resistance than the unclad samples. The knowledge gained and principles used in this project could be applied to many other aluminium alloys.

Ten Council meetings were held during the year with an average attendance of seventeen and the standing committees held 45 meetings. FINANCE The annual accounts, which are attached to this report, show an excess of expenditure over income of R4,608 compared with R2,124 last year. This deterioration can be attributed largely to two important factors, namely an increase in secretarial fees of RI, 789 and an increase in the loss on the Journal from R2,343 to R3,508. In addition, our contribution to the expenses of the Federation of Societies of Professional Engineers increased by R607 from R549 to R1,156. The increase in secretarial fees is partly due to our increased demand for services and partly to increased salaries. In order to maintain its essential services it has been necessary for the A.S. & T.S. to increase salaries in order to keep pace with commerce and industry. With regard to the Journal, we did not expect immediate dramatic results from the changes that were effected as from the beginning of last year in the arrangements for publication. However, the improvement has been even slower in materialising than we expected. This situation is being watched carefully and we will not hesitate to make further changes if necessary. It became clear early in the year that the financial position was deteriorating and your Council decided that it was essential to meet the situation by raising subscriptions and entrance fees. At the same time it was decided that there are no grounds for a distinction between Town and Country members and that in future the scale for the compounding of subscriptions should be based on anticipated future membership, rather than past membership. These changes have had only a minor effect on the accounts under consideration. The MacArthur Forrest Memorial Fund shows an excess of income over expenditure of R132 and the total fund was, therefore, increased by this amount to R4,338. The balance sheet shows that the market value of quoted shares and debentures decreased during the year from R13,059 to R6,567, while accumulated funds now amount to R17,959 compared with R22,567 last year. It will also be noted that we are holding R25,844 on behalf of the Symposium on Opencast Mining. The cause of reduced workability and increased ageing of a blast furnace taphole clay was examined. The investigated taphole clay contained 60 mass% alumina, with phenol-formaldehyde resole resin and liquid pitch serving as the binder system. The workability and Marshall extrusion pressure of the as-manufactured clay samples were evaluated to assess the extent of ageing of the clay. The wettability of all the raw materials was investigated to confirm compatibility between the dry raw materials and both the resin and liquid pitch, while the dry raw materials were analysed using XRF, XRD, and SEM-EDS. The characterisation of the resin and liquid pitch, as well as an analysis of their interaction, was performed using viscosity measurements, Fouriertransform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The analyses confirmed a chemical interaction between the resole resin and liquid pitch, where the chemical structure of the resole resin changed when mixed with pitch, preventing the typical curing behaviour of the resin. Upon ageing of the resin-pitch mixtures, the resin underwent premature cross-linking, causing the curing process to initiate at lower temperatures, i.e., earlier onset of curing. This premature cross-linking was likely due to secondary amines present in the liquid pitch, which acted as a catalyst for the curing process of the resin. This reduction in curing temperature after ageing was confirmed by an increase in binder viscosity, which was identified as the primary cause of reduced workability, accelerated ageing, and increased Marshall extrusion pressure of the taphole clay.

The BCL furnace is scheduled to restart operations after being placed on care and maintenance in 2016 due to depressed nickel prices. The decision to start operations after such a stoppage ought to be led by a techno-economic evaluation of process options to make operations more resilient. For BCL, the decision lies between using the existing flash-smelting furnace (FSF) or a top-submerged lance (TSL) furnace. Available studies show that the FSF combined with other converting technologies is cheaper to operate; however, such studies are based on flowsheet simulation results of single copper concentrates and therefore do not provide a full scope of practical capabilities based on smelter operator skills. Using a t-test on normalized prior operational data from three Cu FSF and two Cu TSL, it was found that the only statistical differences between the operating costs of the FSF and TSL technologies are in the coal use for heating the feed blow and number of rebuilds: the FSF consumes coal to heat the feed blow and the TSL requires 2.4 rebuilds during a course of a single FSF campaign. A summative operating cost comparison over the existing BCL FSF 11-year life shows that BCL can decrease operational costs by some BWP 55.5 million if the operation were to change to the newer TSL technology. The savings derive from reduced coal use, which is normally associated with heating the blow when using the FSF. Despite the TSL carrying added costs of 2.4 rebuilds during a life time of one FSF furnace campaign, the cost associated with the TSL rebuilds of approximately BWP 1.3 million is minimal compared with the overall operational expenditure decrease that BCL will incur on using the TSL technology. In terms of the technology, BCL can have higher Ni–Cu recoveries at lower operational costs by elimination of Ni–Cu losses and eliminating the slag-cleaning furnace by converting to a TSL furnace.

Interparticle breakage is the main crushing mode of an inertia cone crusher according to its working principle and feeding condition. In this paper the breakage behaviour of an inertia cone crusher is investigated, based on energy controlled compression combined with the vibration theory, rather than geometry controlled compression (form conditioned) which plays a major role in conventional eccentric cone crushers. The effect of feeding and operating conditions on breakage behaviour was described quantitatively from the perspective of energy consumption and product size distribution. The influence of feeding conditions, discharge size settings and vibration exciter speeds on the crushing process and product quality has been studied according to the results of laboratory crushing experiments. The results of the experiments show that the particle size of broken products becomes finer with the decrease of a discharge gap within the gap range selected by the experiment. The product size increases significantly when the gap approaches the upper limit of 6 mm. The variation of eccentric speed has a more prominent effect on reducing the product size compared with the change of discharge gap. The change in product size is not apparent when the eccentric speed rises to a certain level. The throughput of an inertia cone crusher is sensitive to the change of discharge gap, which increases linearly with the discharge gap and decreases with the eccentric speed. The hydrogeological conditions in the Chambishi mine area in Zambia. were investigated. Chambishi is a very wet mine and groundwater discharge costs are high. The research goal was to identify methods to reduce the discharge costs without greatly affecting the mining process. Hydrogeological data was obtained from measurements in drill-holes and from drill cores. The differences in structural deformation in different areas determine whether a layer of rock is an aquifer. In the mine region, the Lower Roan Group ore shale and quartz-sandstone unconformably lie on the basal schist and granite aquifuge. The Upper Roan Group dolomite is continuously distributed over a large area around the orebody. This dolomite is the main target of groundwater control efforts, and its water yield is also influenced by the deformation intensity. Based on the observations, backfilling was gradually adopted to appropriately safeguard the integrity of the aquifuge above the orebody. The overlapping relationship between the aquifer and aquifuge has been utilized to increase mine drainage efficiency. This measure has not only greatly reduced the costs of mine drainage, but also improced protection of the groundwater environment. The old drill-holes that were not sealed after exploration drilling were grouted. Further, possible water-conducting fracture zones were investigated. Cover drilling towards the suspected zone was conducted to prevent the high-pressure groundwater from shallower aquifers from entering stopes in deep areas of the mine.

This paper is based on the Townlands Ore Replacement Project whereby the concept of conventional sinking of one large diameter shaft was declined and replaced with three smaller raise bored shafts. A wire line geophysical survey was done and the results indicated that a single shaft larger then 4 m diameter unsupported would not be suitable. The shafts were placed 28 meters apart measured from centre to centre. To ensure that the skin to skin pillars between the shafts remained regular and to minimise any deflection, the pilot holes were drilled with the Rotary Vertical Drilling System. The different shaft sinking methodologies are discussed explaining the risk associated with each method.

"A recent amendment to Section 36(11)(e) of the Income Tax Act, 53 of 1968 (Tax Act) now extends the allowable deduction of ‘capital expenditure’ incurred by mining companies pursuant to the Mineral and Petroleum Resources Development Act 28 of 2002 (MPRDA). In terms of the Taxation Laws Amendment Bill 2016 (TLAB 2016), the allowable deduction has been extended to include expenditure incurred on infrastructure in terms of Social and Labour Plan (SLP) requirements as per the MPRDA. Interestingly, what necessitated the amendment was the need to recognize SLP requirements and to circumvent administrative difficulties for mining companies and the South African Revenue Services (SARS) in differentiating the use of developmental infrastructure by employees or the community. The successful implementation of such a deduction hinges on a sound SLP system. However, given the challenges within the current SLP system, this amendment could be considered somewhat premature. IntroductionSection 36(11) of the Income Tax Act 58 of 1962 (Tax Act) enabled mining companies to deduct certain capital expenditure in lieu of its other sections. In particular, it made provision for mining companies to deduct capital expenditure incurred pursuant to the Mineral and Petroleum Resources Development Act 28 of 2002 (MPRDA), but excluding capital expenditure incurred in respect of infrastructure or environmental rehabilitation. As such, mining companies could only deduct such capital expenditure that related directly to their employees and not to the wider community (Clegg, 2018).In terms of the Taxation Laws Amendment Bill 2016 (TLAB, 2016) (South Africa, 2016a), the recent amendment to Section 36 extends the relief provided under section 36(11)(e) to include capital expenditure incurred on infrastructure in terms of the Social and Labour Plan (SLP) requirements of the MPRDA. In other words, the capital expenditure incurred by the mining company for the benefit of the people living in mining communities. To qualify for such a deduction, the infrastructure erected or developed by the mining company should reflect what was agreed between the mining company and the Department of Mineral Resources (DMR) as per the SLP requirements of the MPRDA (TLAB 2016)."

The geometry and morphology of a set of low-angle fractures around a stope in a deep Witwatersrand gold mine are explained in terms of extension fractures forming under variable conditions of stress. Primary extension fractures (E1) form some distance ahead of an advancing stope along the s1, s2 plane. With stope advance, a couple of these fractures end up in a stress regime conducive to transpressional shear and a secondary set of extension fractures(E2) is formed at a high angle to the primary fractures. i.e. at a low angle to the stope. As the E2 fractures are undermined, they migrate into a stress regime of transtensional shear and a third set of extension fractures (E3) may develop between E2 fractures. These have sigmoidal shapes, being parallel to the E2 fractures at the E2 discontinuity where s3 is negative, and curved through the unfractured rock between E2 fractures where s3 is positive at the instant of fracturing. The fractures all display fractographic features characteristic of dynamic extension failure with striae indicative of the direction of rupture propagation and the local, instantaneous orientation of s1.

"This paper discusses the difficulties associated with the potential exploitation of the deep multi-seam resources east of the Daarby fault in the Waterberg coalfield. The resources occur at a depth greater than 250 m and the thickness of the coal is roughly 110 m, but the top 50 m comprises coal intercalated with shale and the bottom 60 m contains five seams with sandstone and shale partings. Various factors affecting multiple seam mining at these great depths are discussed with reference to lessons learned from local and international experience on multi-seam mining. Field geological and geotechnical data was utilized to assess the stability of the roof of the seams. There is no specific rock mass rating for the Waterberg area, therefore approximate coal mine roof rating (CMRR) values were used to propose appropriate support strategies. Analysis of Multiple Seam Stability (AMSS) was used to analyse the strength of the parting or interburden between the various seams, the mining sequence, and the interaction between the various seams.The research indicated that it is possible to mine seams with a low CMRR at high mining rates using longwall mining, although support for gateroads is expected to be expensive, time-consuming and onerous to install, and will impact gateroad development rates. It will not be possible to simultaneously mine zones in close proximity and failure of the interburden is predicted, thus dangerous mining conditions are anticipated. However, it will be possible to mine just two of the eleven zones using longwall mining. IntroductionThis paper discusses the difficulties associated with the potential exploitation of the deep multi-seam resources east of the Daarby fault in the Waterberg coalfield using bord and pillar and longwall mining. Figure 1 illustrates the location of the Waterberg coalfield relative to other coalfields in South Africa, while Figure 2 shows the areas containing deep and shallow resources. The Waterberg resources are expected to contribute to South Africa’s future energy requirements, and are currently exploited at the Grootegeluk open pit mine. Grootegeluk produces coal mainly for a power station, with the higher quality product supplied as metallurgical coal. The deposit is technically unique and challenging, being a multi-seam coal deposit with a total of 12 seams over a thickness of 110 m as shown in Figure 3, including Zone 5. There is currently limited knowledge on the multi-seam mining of the deep Waterberg resources. Multi-seam mining utilizing the bord and pillar method has been practised in South Africa before, but at a depth of less than 100 m in the Witbank coalfields. Multi-seam mining in thin seams has also been performed in the Natal coalfields at a depth of less than 160 m, but mostly using bord and pillar mining and secondary mining (partial pillar extraction)."

Iron Age metal working in the Magaliesberg area by H. M. FRIEDE, Ph.D. (Visitor) Evidence of smelting and metal working in the Magaliesberg comes mainly from three sites: Broederstroom (Pretoria District). Uitkomst Cave (Krugersdorp District), and Olifantspoort/Olifantshoek \Rustenburg District). The analyses of copper ores found at or near these sites are reported. as are the analyses of twenty-six samples of slag from the Magaliesberg area and other sites in the Transvaal. Iron implements and copper ornaments found at the Magaliesberg sites are described. and the analyses of some of these specimens are reported and discussed. A metallographic report on two iron objects from Broederstroom points to similarities in the smelting and forging techniques that were practised in the Transvaal and Nigeria during the Early Iron Age.

Although a regulation is in force that all water used underground shall be free of bacterial contamination, in practice it is often very difficult to accomplish this. The standard method of disinfection m South African mines IS treatment with calcium hypochlorite, although liquid sodium hypochlorite is used at a few sites. Primarily because the process depends on human control for the addition of the hypochlorite and the regulation of its now, it is frequently found difficult to disinfect mine water adequately and continuously. In many marine environments, chlorine generated by the electrolysis of seawater in its passage through an electric cell is used for disinfection. The generation procedure is continuous and needs no human control except for occasional checking of the equipment. This paper describes the successful implementation of the process, suitably .modified, .at four underground sites. After severe scaling problems had been overcome, a procedure resulted that chlorinates considerably more effectively than the previous system (dosing with calcium hypochlorite), and that has a lower amortized operating cost.

"The copper smelting industry faces increasingly stringent environmental regulations and must continue driving innovation to reduce energy usage in its production chain. With the coming of age of ‘bottom-blowing’ copper technologies in China over the last decade, much renewed attention has been brought to tuyere bath smelting for clean copper-making. Since bottom-blowing sonic injection was originally developed and implemented in steelmaking in the 1970s and lead smelting in the 1990s, the time seems appropriate to revisit the sonic injection concepts and dispel some myths. After reviewing the trends in the copper industry and providing a brief historical context of research and development related to sonic injection, the author presents a comparison of the main submerged tuyere bath smelting technologies, namely the Noranda Reactor (NR), the Teniente Converter (TC), and the Chinese Bottom-Blowing Smelting Furnace (SKS/BBS) for copper, and the Queneau-Schuhmann-Lurgi Reactor (QSL) for lead. The core of this article, however, consists of a brief description of the fundamental theories for sonic injection (jetting regime) and ‘sonic flow mapping’ to illustrate the relationship between the minimum tuyere back-pressure required to achieve sonic flow and the tuyere internal diameter. The article also offers a comparison between side- and bottom-blowing in jetting regime before concluding with the author’s vision of the new trend in submerged tuyere bath smelting. IntroductionIn the last decade, developments in the copper smelting industry have been driven by two key concepts: (1) increasing cleaner smelting capacity to meet the world’s growing copper demand, as illustrated in Figure 1, and (2) increasing process off-gas capture to comply with more stringent environmental regulations and abide by a corporate social responsibility ethic of a clean work environment (for smelter employees) and clean air (for families living around smelters). The copper smelting industry has also faced some major challenges in the last few decades, including (1) low treatment and refining charges (TC/RC or processing fees) impacting custom smelters, (2) lower concentrate quality and grades with higher levels of impurities (e.g. As and Hg), (3) higher processing and transportation costs due to the rising cost of energy, (4) restrictions in process intensification (tonnage oxygen usage) due to furnace integrity limits, and (5) scarcity of educated and trained personnel due to fewer metallurgists graduating from pyrometallurgical school programmes combined with a high retirement rate of skilled workers."
