The fines produced is not suitable as feed material for the subsequent rotary kiln and the electrical arc furnace. The need for briquetting the ferronickel ore is premised on the minimisation of fine particles in the rotary kiln as well as improving charge permeability in the furnace, and improving overall process safety. Briquetting may be defined as an agglomeration method in which fine particles are compressed under pressure. It consists of three different technologies: vibropressing, roller pressing and stiff extrusion. The current study focuses on evaluating the performance of ferronickel briquettes generated, using roller-pressing technology. Physical properties, chemical properties and metallurgical properties of the briquettes were used to evaluate their performance and quality. Standard ISO tests for iron ore pellets were used. Size degradation as a result of reduction was measured using the ISO 4696-1 test. The decrepitation of the briquettes at the point of entry into the rotary kiln was evaluated using the ISO 8371 test method at a temperature of 700oC. The degree of reduction was evaluated using the ISO 4695 test procedure. Average green briquette compressive strength of 559 N was reported at a moisture content of 16% with an average drop number of 19.1. Increasing the moisture content has a detrimental effect on both the compressive strength and the green briquette yield. The drop number is expressed as the number of drops until breakage, when a briquette is dropped from a 1 m height, decreased with an increase in moisture content. Contribution by F.S.A. de Frey The authors are to be congratulated on a job well done by making, in their paper, such a pool of information available to mining engineers. I would like to comment on the following statement: 'As an alternative to the commonly used deep-level mining methods, consideration should also be given to pillar mining at great depths as a logical extension of the current methods. For example, a 75 per cent extraction Or Ryder's discussion The moderate levels if average pillar stress (APS) (320 MPa) are consistent with pillar stability. Squat 10:1 pillars should never 'fail' in themselves, and foundation strengths are also not exceeded (the stresses are well below the 2 ½ x UCS rule-of-thumb provided the foundations comprise normal strong 200 MPa quartzites). Authors' reply We thank Dr de Frey for his contribution to our paper on shallow hard-rock pillar systems. To considerable extent, we share his enthusiasm the potential role of squat pillars in deep-level mining, although we harbour reservations concerning strata control, mining economics, other issues. We agree wholeheartedly that further research, together with carefully planned field trials, is warranted in pursuit of this potentially highly rewarding concept. .

The primary factor contributing to the profitability of a platinum mine and its associated concentrator is the time taken from the first hoist of material from underground to the first batch of concentrate shipped. To minimize the time it would take to produce concentrate without stopping because of a lack of feed material a project was undertaken to integrate the mining model with a concentrator production schedule () in the most capital-effective manner. A secondary goal was to ensure detailed stockpiling requirements, as the concentrator is in an area where ?visual pollution? is to be avoided. To achieve this a dynamic stockpile model was created utilizing the mine production schedule resolved into a daily production figure. Four different concentrator development models were then proposed. The difference between the mine production and concentrator consumption was integrated over the life of the mine to provide the accumulated stockpile tonnages for both Merensky and UG2 ores. The stockpile levels were never allowed to fall below zero to prevent a situation where the concentrator was operational without feed material,. When a development option was selected, the standard metallurgical performance calculations were used to derive a concentrate production schedule, that was then used as a basis for commercial concentrate sale negotiations.

After the presentation of the paper (published in the March Journal) the Vice-President said: "This paper is a very important addition to the considerable volume of work applications on this subject of pneumoconiosis. The disease, in all its various forms, has received attention from many, many great men, both in the medical world, and engineers. The fact that there is this big volume of publications of literature on it still doesn't mean that we can get anywhere beyond the old, simple injunction, that the prevention of pneumoconiosis does not depend on compensation, levies or anything else. It simply depends on allaying dust as quickly as possible. "This paper, however, is another scientific landmark and I think, in a cold and dispassionate way, it sets out some important points in this whole subject of the relationship of the levy - the money of compensation to the dust which causes it. "I have, personally, very little to criticise in this paper but when I listened to Dr du Toit's final conclusions, I wondered whether the words, 'Within the data available', aren't the key to this whole situation. I agree that he has demonstrated a workable relationship between the current industries for levy and dustiness, but among the factors which he lists as being important, I know that there is one which is missing. This is extremely difficult to evaluate. It's a factor which has destroyed, on so many occasions, the work which has been done by so many genuine, intent, honest people working in this field, and this is this unknown factor, this hidden factor of political opportunism, which has so often played a very important part in pneumoconiosis compensation. "How many of us have seen the grubby, grasping fingers of power-mad demagogues, and I can name them for you - but I won't - and also the blatant vote-catching of certain politicians interfering in this field. How, at the end of all that, the poor scientist, the poor dedicated man in the Mines' Department, who has to write the law of compensation, can operate, I do not know. "From this picture the ordinary layman recoils in horror. Among the casualties in this particular war, which has been fought over so many years, I am perfectly certain, are some of the criteria of certification, especially in '56/,57, when that extraordinary condition, known as 'pulmonary disability' was introduced. "In platinum group metals (PGMs) smelting, the slag-to-matte ratios are very high (approximately 4:1 to 9:1). The slag temperature therefore has a strong influence on matte temperature, which is a continual concern due to the low matte melting temperature and its resultant high superheat. Maintaining a stable slag temperature is therefore a critical safety and operational issue. This project aims to improve the understanding of the slag bath temperature drivers so that a more effective slag bath temperature control strategy can be implemented.With the aim of developing a multiphysics model of the furnace, extensive data analysis was performed to develop an in-depth understanding of the process before the start of modelling work. In this work, the effect of fluctuating furnace feed composition on slag temperature was examined. The results are based on equilibrium calculations using FactSage, implemented with ChemApp.A method was developed, using an equilibrium calculation at 25°C, to convert the available chemical assays to approximate mineralogical assays in order to determine the feed enthalpies. Actual 2013 furnace feed data was used and the average specific energy requirement to produce slag and matte at 1600°C was calculated to be 671 kWh/t concentrate. The furnace energy input was then kept constant, and it was found that the slag temperature varies significantly as a function of the feed composition. These results were compared to actual slag temperatures measured on site. It was found that close management of the furnace energy balance is important for maintaining a stable slag temperature."

The use of backfill for regional and local support is receiving increasing attention in the South African mining industry. To ensure that fill materials meet the purposes for which they are intended, a test procedure to characterize the load-deformation characteristics for a particular fill was developed. The major variables identified as influencing the load-bearing proper- ties of backfill include particle size distribution, porosity, width-to-height ratio, strain rate, confinement, water content, and additives. The influence of these variables on the performance of backfill is described in relation to crushed waste, dewatered tailings and deslimed tailings. These investigations confirmed that no single test could be used to define the overall stress-strain behaviour of a selected fill. Nevertheless, resulting from this work, a preliminary standard test procedure for uncemented backfill materials, com- prising a suite of tests in unconfined and confined compression, has been formulated. This test procedure is a significant advance towards a more meaningful evaluation of fill materials. Test results will also provide numerical information for input use in computer programs for the design of mine layouts incorporating backfill.

Physical testing of rock support for rockbursting conditions has been carried out for over 40 years. A review of this testing shows that it has been mostly component based, rather than actually testing support systems. Further, it is concluded that none of the testing is truly representative of rockburst loading in a similitude sense. Similitude conditions are not achievable, mainly because the real conditions in a rockburst event, such as seismic source location and magnitude, wave frequencies, amplitudes, and interactions, are not all known. Because such information is not available, and because the results of all testing carried out to date have not been able to define, for support design purposes, the capacity of support systems, ongoing physical testing of rockburst support systems is essential. It is essential that the test should simulate, or actually take place in, a supported rock excavation. A rock support system is a combination of individual support components that work together to retain and contain the rock. In doing this, the components are subjected to loading by the rock and to interactive loading between one component and another. It is necessary to prove the capacity of such rockburst support systems by subjecting them to severe loading, as in direct blasting. The direct blasting approach, pioneered more than 40 years ago, probably still provides the greatest validity as a significant test of rockburst support capabilities, even though it does not simulate a rockburst. Direct blast testing of rockburst support systems in a surface environment, such as in a quarry or on exposed rock cutting surfaces, could represent a practical development of the approach, facilitating the execution and monitoring of tests.

In situ leaching tests with thiourea as the lixiviant were caried out in two worked-out stopes at the No. 6 shaft at Rand Leases Gold Mining Company. Dissolution rates of 0,9 and 0,7 9 of gold per week per 100 m2 of footwal area were achieved. A major disadvantage of the method seems to be the slow rate of dissolution of the gold, which is probably caused by poor contact and slow mass transfer between the lixiviant and the gold surfaces. Under full-scale application, the loss of lixiviant by leakage could also be a very important factor. Furthermore, the oxidation products of thiourea may 'poison' the activated carbon that is used for the recovery of the gold. The method may therefore be economically viable only in stopes that contain high values of residual gold.

An engineering house?s perspective of required inputs in designing a copper electrowinning tank house and ancillary equipment calls for both understanding of the key fundamental controlling mechanisms and the practical requirements to optimize cost, schedule and product quality. For direct or post solvent extraction copper electrowinning design, key theoretical considerations include current density and efficiency, electrolyte ion concentrations, cell voltages and electrode over potentials, physical cell dimensions, cell flow rates and electrode face velocities, and electrolyte temperature. Practical considerations for optimal project goals are location of plant, layout of tank house and ancillary equipment, elevations, type of cell furniture, required cathode quality, number and type of cells, material of construction of cells, structure and interconnecting equipment, production cycles, anode and cathode material of construction and dimensions, cathode stripping philosophy, plating aids, acid mist management, piping layouts, standard electrical equipment sizes, electrolyte filtration, impurity concentrations, bus bar and rectifier/transformer design, electrical isolation protection, crane management, sampling and quality control management, staffing skills and client expectations. All of the above are required to produce an engineered product that can be designed easily, constructed quickly and operated with flexibility.

The gas-solid dense-phase fluidised bed includes a complex multiphase fluid-particle system; different complex exchanges significantly affect the stability of the fluidised bed. To elucidate the characteristics of fluidisation in a gas-solid dense-phase fluidised bed, this study used experimental performance tests to obtain the static density characteristics, and the attachment and flow characteristic of the dense medium. The results indicate that the bulk density of the dense medium increases first and then decreases with the increase of particle size. The airflow rate difference is used to quantify the wall attachment characteristics of dense medium and the average pressure gradient in the axial direction of the bed is approximately 20 Pa/mm under the fluidisation results. At the same settlement location, with the decrease of fluidisation number, the settlement velocity of large and small particles becomes slower, the boundaries of settlement displacement and location probability are gradually disrupted, and the falling velocity of particles with a radius of 20 mm is faster than that of materials with a radius of 15 mm. This work also established a theoretical basis for regulating the stability and separation characteristics of gas-solid dense-phase fluidised bed. I. R. M. Chaston* As a gravity concentration man in the midst of so many eminent flotation experts I feel like Daniel. However, I would respectifully disagree with the opening remarks by Mr Viljoen. First, he suggested that gravity concentration of cassiterite was not effective in sizes below 30 microns. In a paper to the Institution of Mining and Metallurgy in 19621, I gave some figures for gravity concentration of deslimed material both for cassiterite and for wolfram which indicated that careful shaking table concentration of fine deslimed material could give recoveries of 75 to 90 percent in the size ranges above 13 micron. These were figures obtained from normal plant operation. It would be interesting to know if any tests were carried out on gravity concentration of the efficiently deslimed feed to this flotation plant to see what the recovery would be. Secondly, Mr Viljoen suggested that gravity concentration plants were expensive. He gives the cost of a flotation plant at R300 000 to treat a feed of 400 t.p.d. to the desliming section or 160 t.p.d. to the flotation cells. From his operating cost figures it would appear that the flotation cost is approximately R2 to R4 per ton of feed to flotation and the total operating cost about R2 per ton of feed. A table plant to treat this tonnage of deslimed feed would consist of about 30 tables and should cost considerably less to install and very much less to operate than the flotation plant. Third, Mr. Viljoen suggests that the concentrate grade from a gravity concentration operation would be unacceptably low. The paper quoted abovel showed that once a primary fine concentrate had been made, giving a suitably deslimed material, further gravity concentration could give concentrates of over 40 per cent Sn with high recoveries. Tailing from this dressing stage was naturally returned to the feed. To give these high grades, sulphides had been removed by flotation but this necessary flotation step is simple and cheap to operate and could be restricted to the final stage when the quantities involved are small. I would agree that flotation has a part to play in fine tin recovery but this role would only seem to become fully effective at sizes below 10 micron and would seem to require, as Mr. Viljoen has suggested, a mechanism for sizing which is effective down to, say, 1 micron. In the meantime it would be interesting to try tabling the flotation tailing to see if it was possible to recover the plus 20 micron cassiterite which is not recovered well by flotation. One point which has been made during discussion is the suggestion that cassiterite particles have a fully hydrated surface at normal pH. I wonder if this layer could materially affect the overall specific gravity of a very small cassiterite particle and, if so, whether gravity concentration of the very fine cassiterite would be improved if carried out in acid conditions, which would inhibit the formation of this hydrated surface. King Mr Viljoen has drawn attention to the difficulties associated with the presence of very fine particles in the flotation pulp and he has indicated that, on the Union Tin plant, they must sacrifice 30 percent of the cassiterite in the minus 7 /Lm material which they separate and lose. He has also indicated that the rate of flotation of cassiterite remained high at these small sizes. The problem arises because the very small particles stabilize the froth making it impossible to handle. These stable froths cannot be easily broken and therefore cannot be pumped and processed. It seems that further fundamental research work on the properties of stabilized froths is urgently required. We have found another difficulty associated with the presence of very fine particles in phoscorite slurries; these particles can be easily floated but with very poor selectivity. We believe that it is possible that a purely physical mechanism such as entrainment is responsible for the collection of fine particles in the froth. We have also demonstrated that the presence of fine particles in the pulp adversely affects the rate of flotation of the larger particles. For esample, we have found an increase in recovery of + 100 um material from 2 percent to 17 percent in a standard laboratory batch flotation test on phoscorite when the - 37 um was removed from the feed. Such interactions between particles are not universally recognised as an important aspect of the complex flotation mechanism. They should appear in any quantitative formulation of the flotation rate process.

WeissThe reasons for failure of computer applications in the mineral industry and the direction of future developments.The Chairman opened the discussion by elaborating on the disappointment felt by some authorities with the lack of progress in the application of computers in the mineral industry during the last ten years, and posed the question to the panel : 'Do you agree that the computer age has not come up to expectations?'Mr Langton said that although there seemed to be a tremendous amount of brainpower applied to the theoretical side, he thought that the production men had not got all the help from computers that could have been given to them. The computer, said Prof Griffiths, is as yet a new tool which should not be used to do old things in old ways. To learn to use the computer will take time. After all, he said, it had taken 400 years after the introduction of the printing press to achieve general literacy, and perhaps it will take 40 years after the introduction of the computer to achieve `numeracy'.In Mr Weiss' view, the reason for the feeling of disappoint¬ment lay in the focussing of attention on the computer. The blame, if any, lay with the people surrounding the computer, that is, the analysts and programmers, to whom the emphasis should be shifted.Prof Hawkins said that he thought that some applications of the computer in the mineral industry had been successful, such as, for example, the compilation of payrolls. Reasons for failures in other areas were to be sought in the fact that the people connected with computers had failed to realise that they were merely part of a system. They had not understood the power structure of the organization which their work tended to change, and were therefore not prepared for the inevitable conflict with the production men.In Mr Splaine's view the production man had not received the assistance he could have had from the computer people because he may possibly not have allowed this to happen.Prof Bleksley concluded from these opinions that the promise which computers had ton years ago had not been fulfilled and added that the opinions expressed by the panel had intruded on his next question which was: 'Is the reason for this that people are involved?Prof Hawkins elaborated on his previous theme, namely, that of computer people in relation to management. Com-puter people, he said, were trying to impose change on management but were not prepared to share the responsibility for these changes. In fact, they wanted their work to be distinct and separate, and, as far as management was concerned, changes would be made when management believed that these would be less agonizing than no change at all."

Effective thermal conductivities of packed beds of chromite ores by M. L. YOUNG, B.Se. (Rand), M.Sc. (Rand) (Visitor) and J. B. SEE, B.Sc. (Hons), Ph.D. (New South Wales), M.I.M., M.I.M.M. (Member) The effective thermal conductivities in stagnant air of packed beds of fines, lumps, and indurated and pre-reduced pellets of two chromite ores with different chromium-to-iron ratios were determined in the temperature range 300 to I 100°C by the heat-sink technique. Packed beds of fines, whether of the size fraction between 20 and 65 mesh, between 65 and 100 mesh, or between 100 and 150 mesh, were found to have the same values of effective thermal conductivity. For one ore, the effective thermal conductivities of packed beds of fines between 20 and 48 mesh at tem peratures above 600"C were higher than those for finer particles. This difference is explained as being due to the increase in importance of radiation heat transfer, but no definite conclusions are reached about the relative contributions of conduction and radiation heat transfer to the effective thermal conductivities of packed beds of fines between 20 and 48 mesh. Two published models were used for the theoretical prediction of values for thermal conductivities of the indurated and pre-reduced pellets as well as of lump ore. The experimental and theoretical results were in good agreement in view of the uncertainties in the assumed values of emissivity and thermal conductivity of the chromite ore.

"Steepening of slopes provides the means to reduce waste extraction and increase ore recovery in open pit mines; however, it may also adversely affect safety by posing a higher risk of slope failure. The implementation of slope monitoring programmes is recommended to manage this risk inherent in steeper slopes. In this paper, the design and evaluation of monitoring campaigns to measure subsurface deformation and groundwater pore pressure in open pit mines is presented. The monitoring programmes were applied to a theoretical case of an open pit mine designed using DeepMine software (BOAMine SpA, 2015). Mine plans were developed based on the initial base case scenario with monitoring programmes considered for four types of monitoring instrumentation: two established technologies, in-place inclinometers (IPIs) and vibrating wire piezometers (VWPs); one emerging technology, the ShapeAccelArray (SAA); and a novel technology under development, the Enhanced Networked Smart Markers (ENSMs). Technical and economic appraisals of the monitoring programmes and sensitivity analysis of the developed mine plans showed that using ENSMs spaced every 4 m had the lowest cost per unit of data gathered. IntroductionSeveral open pit mines have already exceeded their design life and, as they become deeper and reach depths over 1000 m, they face higher rock stress levels and tensile deformations (Stacey and Xianbin, 2004; Stacey et al., 2003). The more complex the conditions in modern open pit mines, the more difficult it is to achieve long-lasting, stable pit slopes and to meet the mine’s economic needs: maximize financial returns, minimize risks to operational safety, achieve optimal ore recovery, and minimize waste extraction (Stacey, 2009). Steepening of slopes provides the means to reduce waste extraction and increase ore recovery (Stacey, 2009; Calderon and Tapia, 2006; Bye and Bell, 2001; Jefferies, Lorig, and Alvarez, 2008); however, it may adversely affect operational safety, as steeper slopes are less stable than shallow slopes (Steffen et al., 2008; Mphathiwa and Cawood, 2014)."

"Sampling error and bias, especially the Increment Preparation Error (IPE), are introduced when the tool allocated to do the job fails to extract a representative sample. This is the case with chip sampling; the tool can only extract haphazard shapes of loose or fractured material and not always from within the demarcated sample area. Increment Extraction Error (IEE) and Increment Delimitation Error (IDE) could be severe, but are found to be relatively unbiased. The uncontrolled action of the sampler in discarding excess sample material after sample collection has a significant impact on the error and bias introduced with each and every extraction. A new type of bias, referred to as the ‘waste discard bias’, arises when samplers select what portion of the excess sample material to discard at the sample site. Material visually identified as waste is discarded in preference to mineralized broken ore if there is an excess of sample material. This results in a considerable error in the analytical results. The bias is proportional to the reef-waste ratio in the demarcated sample. IntroductionTwo types of ‘sampling’ are distinguished, namely sampling of particulate materials (broken ores) and sampling of solid, unbroken in situ mineralized reef. This study considers only chip- or face-sampling of in situ, goldbearing, carbon-rich conglomerates typical of the Upper Witwatersrand Supergroup and examines where components of sampling error and bias, clearly specified in the Theory of Sampling, may arise during the practice of ‘face sampling’. Many millions of face samples have been extracted from Witwatersrand-type mines using a hammer and chisel, and detailed descriptions (standard operating procedures) of how the samples should be taken have been developed by many mining companies. There is, however, no taxonomy or nomenclature for managing or reporting the different types of errors associated with chip sampling. The Theory of Sampling compiled by Pierre Gy in the early 1950s provides, comprehensive nomenclature of sampling errors that is applied to particulate sampling of ore in a lot, a stockpile, or a moving stream on a conveyor belt. The taxonomy and characteristics of sampling errors, grouped according to the sources from which they arise, and identified by Gy (1973, 1979, 1982, 1992, 1995, and 1998) are shown in Figure 1. This classification of errors is used extensively in regard to the sampling of particulate materials in the mining and minerals industry, but not in regard to chip sampling. A relatively small mass (hundreds of grams) of representative particulate material for estimating the average grade of a much larger mass (thousands of tons – the ‘lot’ in the Theory of Sampling) is extracted by the chipping or cutting of a representative rock ‘sample’ from the stope face."

Biooxidation, and especially the BIOX® process, is a viable, economical and environmentally attractive process to liberate gold hosted in refractory sulfides by oxidatively leaching the sulfides as soluble sulfates. The moderate to high cyanide consumption during the subsequent cyanidiation of the washed biooxidation residue is probably caused by the retention on the solids of labile sulfur species formed during the multi-electron oxidation process of sulfide to sulfate. In this work the nature and mode of transport of the cyanicides in the products from the mesophile BIOX® process, as well as that of the combined mesophile and thermophile bioxidation process, were considered and strategies to reduce cyanide consumption evaluated. It was found that labile sulfur species were the major cyanide consumers in the mesophile biooxidation product, forming predominantly thiocyanate during cyanidation. The transfer of labile sulfur species was only marginally decreased by more intensive and thorough washing of the biooxidation products with warm and hot water, intense stirring and warm caustic leaching. A major reduction in cyanide consumption was however achieved by using a combined mesophile and thermophile biooxidation process. Overexposure to noise remains a widespread, serious health hazard in the US mining and other industries despite 25 years of regulation. Most categories of illnesses and injuries associated with mining have improved, with the exception of hearing loss. The drilling of rock in a confined work environment contributes to high levels of noise exposure in mining. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is conducting research to reduce the noise exposures of jackleg drill operators and to prevent additional cases of noise induced hearing loss (NIHL) by developing and evaluating low-cost retrofit noise controls for equipment. This report describes the procedure for the measurement and reporting of noise from portable pneumatic tools such as jackleg drills. The technique used in this research allows for the determination of the source A-weighted sound power levels and the radiation patterns in octave and 1/3 octave bands. Overall sound power level is also determined. This paper also reports the results obtained by using this procedure to evaluate a SECO S215 standard production drill and a CSIR Miningtek prototype rock drill incorporating engineering noise control measures. It was found that by using the manufacture?s recommended operating pressure of 496 kPa (72 psi) that the CSIR prototype?s sound power was 10 dB(A) less then that of the SECO S215.
