It is well known that job-related hazards and individual factors influence occupational injuries. However, research involving coalminers has been limited. This case-control study assessed the relationships of job-related hazards and individual/life style factors with injuries among underground coal miners. It compared 245 cases with at least one injury during the previous two-year period with 245 matched controls with no injury. The data were gathered via personal interview and analysed using the conditional logistic model. The significant risk factors were materials handling (adjusted OR 5.15), poor environmental/working conditions (2.63), geological/strata control-related hazards (2.35), lack of formal education (3.00), sleep disorders (1.86), alcohol consumption (2.32), disease (2.23), having a large family (5.40), and risk-taking behaviour (9.40). Machine-related hazards, sleep disorders and alcohol consumption primarily affected workers aged less than 45 years; whereas, environment/working condition-related hazards, presence of disease, smoking, risk-taking behaviour and large family size were more likely among workers aged 45 or over. Discussion: M. D. G. Salamon* (Fellow): The theoretical principles behind the techniques of calculation used by the authors was formulated and published during the period 1962- 65. These principles, together with their practical implications, were summarized in a review paper in 1966.1 Now, in February, 1970, we have this long and comprehensive paper discussing the practical application of the theory. I think this is good progress. The large number of practical examples treated in the paper clearly demonstrates not only the skill and knowledge of the authors, but also the versatility of the techniques of analysis. I feel that the techniques described by the authors, and their improved versions, will revolutionize mine planning. I suggest that no shaft system or stoping layout should be planned in future without an adequate rock mechanics analysis. It seems that it will be progressively more difficult to white wash mistakes in rock mechanics and attribute their costly outcome to normal mining risk. We should not, however, become complacent. There is still a lot to learn and do in the future. I do not want to discuss tonight the question of further research but instead, I will raise two other problems which may hinder the future progress of practical rock mechanics. To carry out work similar to that described in the paper, mine managements require men who are capable of doing the work and who have the most efficient techniques of analysis at their disposal. As a research engineer I have been associated with the development of techniques of analysis. I can assure you that these have undergone an amazingly rapid development during the last six years. We have seen the change from the use of the electrolytic tank analogue and manual integration to the method described by the authors, that is, to the employment of the automatic network analogue and computer integration. But this is not the end. In a recent paper Prof R. P. Plewman2 and his co-authors described a completely digital technique. Here the process of calculating on- and off-reef quantities is integrated into one computer run. But these sophisticated methods of computation are useless without men to make intelligent use of them. During the last few years a new breed of mining engineers has appeared on the scene - the Rock Mechanics Engineer. I feel it is timely to call the attention of the senior members of this Institute to the fact that this new breed will succeed in carrying out its duties in a valuable manner only if we manage to attract to its ranks young engineers of the right quality. The requirements are high. The top rock mechanics engineers have to be good mine planners and they have to understand the essence of sophisticated theories. Without these attributes they will not succeed in the long term and the industry will not gain the benefit of available knowledge. To attract this quality of engineers the industry will have to ensure that rock mechanics is accepted by all concerned as a career which could lead to the top echelons of our profession. Finally, I would like to make one or two remarks concerning Part I of the paper. In Sections 3.1 and 3.2 the authors describe methods of determining the normal stress on the reef plane and the convergence distribution in the excavations. The description as given applies only to a horizontal reef. When the reef is inclined the situation is more complex since a shear component of stress on the intact reef and a ride component in the excavations must then also be determined. These can be calculated by methods similar to that described in the paper.3 The practical application of the method of calculating the released energy (Section 3.4) is in the comparison of various stoping layouts to establish an order of preference in terms of decreasing rates of energy release. To carry out these comparisons effectively, the calculations must be carried out in a manner by which the values of energy per unit area obtained are comparable. I would like to note in this respect that the method of calculation given in the paper is valid without reservation only if there is no elastic contact between the hanging and foot walls in the mined-out area. If there is contact then the calculated energy values are correct only if the mined out area is increased in small steps during the analysis. My second point in this regard is concerned with the practical method of calculation as described in Sections 3.4 (ii)-(iii). Firstly, I would like to suggest that the energy calculation should be carried out, as far as possible, by using always the same scale on the analogue. Secondly, the reading of current on a pin should be followed by the removal of that pin to obtain the corresponding reading of potential. The product of these two values will be proportional to the energy released during the mining of the small area corresponding to that pin. The method suggested by the authors tends to mask possible danger points in the layouts, since they obtain an average value for a time period, say, for six months.

Modern materials for underground support* by M. McChesney The properties required of a support material for underground tunnels are discussed and, because concrete is both economical and easy to apply, a number of new reinforcing materials for concrete are examined with particular reference to these properties. From about thirty tests on different types of reinforced concrete, it is concluded that the addition of polymer to a concrete does not seem to influence the concrete's post-failure behaviour, and the on'y benefit to be achieved by this addition is to increase its flexibility (or to decrease it, depending on the polymer). Steel fibres tend to increase both the strength and stiffness of the concrete, but polypropylene fibres, although having definite loadcarrying capacities, provide non-stable failure, also known as brittle failure. The best result was obtained for concrete reinforced with steel wire: the post-cracking strength was very good and was maintained for a considerable deformation.

Postage and packing, 3s. 6d. This volume should be of interest to economic geologists and students in this field. A number of illustrated papers on the genesis of ores in sediments are presented; the authors include experts such as Prof G. C. Amstutz, Dr K. C. Dunham, Prof D. Williams and W. G. GarIick. The papers deal mainly with sulphide deposits, but the late Prof J. H. Taylor's contribution concerns ores of iron and manganese. Brief references to the Witwatersrand ores represent the only discussion of South African deposits. With the notable exception of W. G. Garlick's paper on Zambian copper deposits, the Abstracts given are inadequate, necessitating thorough reading of the papers to extract the important matter.

Minerals and Manpower - PRESIDENTIAL ADDRESS given by R. P. Plewman, Pr. Eng., B.Sc. (Eng) (Wits), M.A. (Oxon.) INTRODUCTION What I want to discuss is the future pattern of manpower in the mining industry, and I should like to begin by examining some relevant statistics. There are four areas that must be examined. Firstly, the future rate of production of different minerals must be estimated. Secondly, an assessment must be made of the balance of different mining technologies likely to be used for each mineral. Thirdly, the manpower requirements for each technology must be determined. Sixteenth to seventeenth century Kalanga miners dug a series of sub-vertical shafts into a 10 to 30 m wide zone of copper ore at the Thakadu Mine near Matsitama, Botswana. They went down at least 6 m in search of thick malachite veins. The host rock was hand 'cobbed' to remove the veins, which were then smelted nearby in small bowl furnaces. Evidently, the furnaces lacked clay superstructures, since a simple pit was sufficient to smelt the almost pure malachite. The copper bloom was probably refined in villages further away.

In May 2009 a test work programme was carried out at the sorting laboratory of CommodasUltrasort in Germany which was aimed at establishing the efficiency of X- ray transmission sorting for the recovery of unliberated diamonds in a size range of +8mm. A PRO Tertiary XRT belt sorter with a working width of 600mm and a belt speed of -3mJs was used for the test work. Dual energy X-ray transmission sorting is a type of sensor-based sorting which uses an X-ray scanning system, The attenuation of the transmitting X-rays is measured at two different energy levels, Thereby it is possible to eliminate the effect of the particle thickness on the measurement result. The effective measurement results in a classification by elemental order based on the periodic table.

In Chapter 1 we mentioned that up to three components are considered to represent the variability of regionalized variables : a deterministic component, a correlated component, and a random component. In Chapter 2 we considered some of the models based on the assumption of randomly distributed values: the random component was assumed to be the only one present. In Chapters 3 to 11, more general but also more complex models were described, based on the assumption that the values were correlated with the possible presence of random noise. In this chapter we introduce a model used to analyse non- stationary data, for which a deterministic component (or drift) must be assumed. This model will be used for estimation purposes, and the corresponding optimal linear estimation procedure is known as universal kriging. The theory of universal kriging is much more complex than the theory of kriging. Fortunately, in the majority of mine valuation problems the drift can be ignored and the simpler form of kriging can be used.

This paper deals with procedures used for designing pillar systems in hard-rock tabular mines operating at shallow depths, typically less than 1000 m. A comprehensive review if current practice identifies four types if pillars, namely non-yield, yield, crush and barrier pillars, and the main principles for designing these pillars are outlined. It is shown that the current design methods for pillar systems in South Africa are mainly empirical, each mine developing its pillar-design methods based largely on practical experience. This results in varying pillar layouts, even between neighbouring mines, despite similarities in geology, and depth if mining. It is suggested that some current layouts may fall short if being the best as regards safety, the maximum safe extraction percentages, or flexibility in accommodating future mining scenarios in deeper or otherwise different geological conditions.

A study was made of the performance of a rod mil operating without liter bars and with different arrangements of liter bars in the lining. . The results show that striking improvements in performance, increased throughput, and reduced consumption of liner metal and electrical energy can be obtained by a change in the geometry of the liter-bar arrangements within a mil. Rod mils of equal size fitted with the same arrangement of liter bars but operating at different speeds presented apparent anomalies in the relative consumption efficiency of electrical energy for the production of material smaller than 75 µ m. Marked savings in the consumption of liner metal were achieved by the use of an arrangement of alternating lines of higher and lower liter bars. A study of the relative performances of two large tube mils showed that the use of liter bars in one of the mils resulted in a marked reduction in the consumption of liner metal and electrical energy per ton of material smaller than 75 µ m in the product.

The value realised by an open pit mine depends on the quality and integrity of the mine planning process as well as the level of execution against these mine plans. When managing the execution against the mine plan, how well the mine plan is executed spatially, is of critical importance. The short-term mine plan is the plan that is physically executed on most open pit mines. At the same time, the spatial mine-to-plan compliance is typically reconciled against the annual business plan. Short-term mine planning, therefore, plays an important role in the effectiveness of the spatial mine-to-plan compliance reconciliation process by providing operational teams with detailed designs and schedules, while ensuring that mining execution is spatially aligned with the business plan. The Sishen open pit iron ore mine (Sishen) strives to continuously improve spatial compliance to the business plan. Sishen enhanced the role that short-term mine planning plays in enabling the forward-looking component of the spatial mine-to-plan compliance reconciliation process. The enhanced short-term mine planning process focuses on detailed tactical sequence designs per mining pushback, the health of value chain buffers, spatial plan-to-plan reconciliation, and the associated management routines. This led to improved spatial mine-to-plan compliance to the business plan from 71% to 94% over the four-year period from 2020 to 2023 inclusive. These results indicate that the application of short-term mine planning as part of an integrated spatial mine-to-plan compliance process at open pit mines can contribute positively to improving the level of spatial execution against the business plan. This paper presents the enhancements made to the short-term mine planning process, which other open pit mining operations can consider to improve spatial mine-to-plan compliance.

"The determination of the oxidation state(s) of an element present in a solid sample may be required for a number of reasons, including the assessment of the degree of reduction which has taken place during a multi-step production of a metal. In addition, possible flaws in a metal may result from small amounts of oxides included in the solid. The analyte of interest may be present as a major component of a sample of interest, or as a minor impurity - beneficial or requiring removal - in another matrix.Numerous methods have been established for the analysis of species in solution samples - for example, Fe2+ and Fe3+ by titration, Cr6+ by colourimetric means, etc. With appropriate knowledge of the solution being analysed, many of these methods are fairly straightforward, extremely reproducible and accurate. In those instances where the analyte in a solution is known to be in only one form, the analysis is even more straightforward, since it can be achieved instrumentally (by AAS, rCP-OES or rCP-MS, for example).However, the situation with respect to the analysis of solids is not as simple. Various techniques - such as X-ray diffraction - are routinely used by our mineralogists to obtain information about the various minerals present in solid samples, and thus about the oxidation states of the analyte elements present. However, these techniques usually give results that are qualitative, or semi-quantitative at best. They are also usually time-consuming and expensive. One of our colleagues at Mintek, Deshenthree Chetty, has done extensive work in developing a method for the quantification of manganese species in solids using mineralogical methods, and this is no small achievement."

Outotec?s direct leaching process is an atmospheric leaching process for sulphidic zinc concentrates. The direct leaching process, based on special leaching reactors developed by Outokumpu, is the most economical way to produce electrolytic zinc. The production scale applications of the process realized so far are in use at Boliden?s Kokkola and Odda zinc plants. A new full-scale application of Outotec?s direct leaching process will be started in 2008 in China. The process is integrated into the existing production plant, replacing part of the old production facilities by modern technology. Besides high zinc extraction the plant expansion and modernization offers also indium recovery, iron precipitation and solution purification processes. The process equipment includes tailor-made reactors designed on the basis of the work and experience of Outotec research centre. The heavy-minerals plant at the Palabora Mining Company treats 25 to 30 kt of new feed daily. The U3Og value of the ore averages approximately 40 p.p.m. The circuit consists of four stages of upgrading on 68 Reichert cones, fol. lowed by a jig and 30 table decks. The paper describes how feed-distribution problems have been overcome and the methods used for monitoring and controlling the cone performance. The adaptation of a standard jig for the recovery of fine minerals is discussed, and a method of 'table agglomeration, for the recovery of coarse refractory copper sulphide is described. The tables consist of polyurethane-covered fibreglass decks, and their operation is controlled according to measurements of the uranothorianite content of the concentrates and middlings by means of a nuclear scintillation counter. The upgrading ratio of the uranium mineral by gravity concentration is 1000:I, baddeleyite (ZrO.) being recovered as a by product.

In conclusion, he thanked the organising committee, the authors and the contributors, and introduced the author of the first paper. The following papers were presented:- 'The future development of the Iron and Steel Industry' by J. P. Coetzee (Published in the Journal March 1971). Among those who contributed to the paper were Dr Bleloch, Dr K. Gebhard, Dr Way and Professor Müller. The main point made by Dr Bleloch related to the reserves of coking coal and of coal for power generation this in country and he deduced that in South Africa we are critically short of coking coal. On the basis that 4 million tons per year of coking coal are consumed for our present steel production, over 16 million tons would be required to meet the anticipated expansion in steel output by A.D. 2000. This must be set against the grim forecast made by the Coal Advisory Board in 1967 that our national reserves of coking coal will be exhausted before A.D. 2000. This gives tremendous significance to the development work presently being carried out by Iscor on alternative methods for coke production. On the other hand the blast furnace may have to be replaced by an alternative process for the reduction of iron ores, e.g., the use of rotary kilns followed by electric arc smelting. Dr Bleloch also expressed grave forebodings about the reserves of bituminous coal, pointing out that with present methods of mining the recoverable coal in any given reserve is in general only 50 per cent of that reserve. He stated that in the past seventy years great quantities of coal have been forever placed beyond the reach of mining by being undermined by extraction of lower seams or lost by being burned. A final point made by Dr Bleloch was the fast rise in the capital investment in a fully integrated steel plant, the figure having risen in the past decade from just over R200 to R350 per ton of finished steel per annum. Dr Gebhard spoke of the direct reduction processes for iron making pointing out the difficulties of securing a high percentage of reduction and the relatively high cost of smelting in electric arc furnaces. Determination of the optimum cut-off grades is one of the most important aspects of mine production planning. A cut-off is a grade below which we choose not to process material. This material is treated as waste and dumped. Dumping waste is accompanied by the rehabilitation cost which will affect the overall cost of final production and also the optimum cut-off grade. Rehabilitation cost is the cost per ton of rehabilitating material of a particular type of rock after it has been dumped as waste. One of the most popular algorithms for determination of the optimum cut-off grade is Lane?s method. Lane formulated the cut-off grade optimization, but he did not consider rehabilitation cost during the optimization process. This cost item should be evaluated first, and then considered during the cut-off grade optimization process. In this paper the rehabilitation cost is inserted directly into the cut-off grade optimization process using Lane?s theory. The cut-off grades obtained using the suggested method will be more realistic than ones using the original form of Lane?s formulations.

The contribution made to the economy of South Africa by the-minerals industry is discussed according to four of its aspects. Firstly, the industry supports both students and lecturers in technical and academic institutions. This support covers virtually the whole range of courses available at the universities and technikons, although most is obviously devoted to the engineering and science faculties. Secondly, the industry makes a direct financial contribution to the State in that it contributes about40 per cent of the State's receipts from direct tax paid on incomes and 30 per cent of the contributions to the total State revenue. It provides employment for 28 per cent of the total active labour force, and contributes 24 per cent directly to the gross domestic product. Thirdly, the industry is responsible for over 65 per cent of the country's foreign earnings in spite of the significant rise in exports from the manufacturing sector. South African minerals are of crucial importance to the word, since the country has the world's largest reserves of seven minerals and features very prominently in many others. Finally, the industry makes an indirect contribution, referred to as the multiplier effect. This is the ripple effect on the economy made by a large injection of momey by which that money acquires an added effective value. A study made of the total production of the mining industry in 1978, for instance, showed this multiplier to havea value of 1,5. Thus, if this effect is included, the industry's contribution to the gross domestic product is 44,S per cent. Similarly, the industry is responsible for the creation of jobs both within itself and in other industries, which could amount to 100000 for the period 1981 to 1935.

Recovery of energy from the water going down mine shafts by A. WHILLIER, Pr. Eng., Se. D. (M.I.T.) (Fellow) The influence of energy-recovery systems on the rise in temperature of water going down mines is examined. It is concluded that the, cost benefit of such systems, deriving partially from the reduced temperature rise in situations where cold water IS sent underground from surface, would more than justify the installation cost.

Primary fracture from an array of shotholes by c. M. LOWNDS. B.Sc. Hons. (Rhodes). Ph.D. (Cape) (Visitor) and P. C. SELIGMANN. B.Sc. (Witwatersrand) (Visitor) The effects of stress on the directions of cracks that are propagating in a brittle medium are described. It is shown that the superimposition of stress fields from the holes of an array always adversely affects fragmentation. Consequently, the best fragmentation will result when holes are fired far enough apart in space or time for each to develop its whole crack pattern without disturbance from the others. This concept leads to a philosophy for the design of more effective blasting patterns, which has been verified on model scale and which explains many published, empirical results.
