There are two main types of densifying cyclones currently available in the market, namely polyeurethane (PU) and ceramic. The PU densifying cyclones are currently used throughout the Grootegeluk complex and coal beneficiation in general. It has been identified that PU densifiers wear relatively fast depending on the operating pressure and need to be replaced frequently as a result. The motivation for this paper is to achieve an increase in the densifying cyclone lifetime through less wear and an increase in efficiency resulting in the ability to build higher relative densities (RD) more quickly. This will allow for a reduction in downtimes due to replacing densifying cyclones as well as building RD and a reduction in the operating costs associated with replacing worn densifying cyclones. Some of the major findings of the study indicated that the ceramic cyclone theoretically undergoes less wear than the PU cyclone, but since wear is application-specific and was evaluated, the wear on the polyurethane cyclone was found to be minimal. The RD differential is higher on the PU cyclones than the ceramic cyclones, showing that the PU cyclones perform better in a densifying application. This is the first test conducted on this application and type of cyclones. It should therefore be noted that having the PU cyclone significantly outperform the ceramic cyclone was not expected, due to the only change being the material of construction. This is an indication to take the material of construction into account when selecting cyclones as it can have a significant impact on the cyclone performance in specific applications. The traditional vertical transportation systems deliver both gangue and useful mineral. The extraction of the desired minerals requires the construction of mineral processing and waste management plants, driving production costs, and often creating a negative environmental impact. The proposed technology is an integration of mineral processing within the transportation system. The mined rock is crushed and then loaded into a vertical lifting system filled with heavy media, with an intermediate density between the mineral and the waste rock. Driven by gravity separation, the desired mineral floats to the earth's surface, while the waste sinks. Delivered minerals and sunk waste is extracted from the heavy media and is then regenerated to a dry state. The useful mineral should be suitable for further use, and the waste used for backfilling. Remained residues of the heavy media may be recycled and reused in the vertical transportation system. Trials of the proposed process in a pilot format have confirmed economic and environmental advantages over traditional methods of transportation and mineral processing technologies. In the field of high temperature smelting processes there have been two dramatic changes in the past twenty years. These are, first, the application of tonnage oxygen for direct injection for the refining of molten iron and other metals and to provide the means of enriching air used for the combustion of fuel. Second, the application of electric power for the generation of high temperatures in place of the combustion of fossil fuels. Of these two developments the application of tonnage oxygen for the refining of molten iron has virtually revolutionised the steel industry throughout the world. The magnitude of this development is exemplified by the fact that less than 5 per cent of the world's steel production in 1960 was made by this process or 16 million tons out of a total of 350 million tons of steel produced, while in 1970 over 40 per cent of the world steel production was made by this process, ie, 251 million tons out of 628 million tons total. In the same period the proportion of steel produced by the old-established open-hearth process has shrunk from 75 per cent to 38 per cent. In the whole history of the development of high temperature metallurgical smelting processes there has never been anything remotely approaching this. The other development, the application of electric power for the generation of high temperatures has not had the impact of the oxygen injection process but I believe that what we should call the electric smelting revolution in metallurgical processes has very far-reaching ramifications for steel production and other pyrometallurgical processes. This may seem a bold and brash statement but it must be remembered that the oxygen injection process constitutes a link in the chain critically dependent upon the production of vast tonnages of molten iron from very large modern blast furnaces. The Achilles heel of this chain of processes, upon which such a large percentage of the world's supply of steel depends, is the availability of metallurgical coke in turn dependent on natural resources of coking coal. Without any exception each industrial country in the world faces a shortage of resources of coking coal and in some cases a critical shortage. Certainly within the present century the major iron and steel producing countries of the world will face this critical shortage of coking coal and major modifications to steel making processes will become inevitable. W. F. Cartwright (Deputy Chairman of B.S.C) said recently that there are considerable doubts as to whether the world will be able to provide enough coking coal to meet world steel demands from the late 1970's onwards if the B.F.remains the main means for making iron from ore. This is one of the supreme ironies of the world metallurgical situation to-day when the technology of iron and steel production has reached an extremely high peak of technical efficiency. The newest modern iron blast furnace capable of producing 6 000 to 8 000 tons per day of molten iron represents probably the most efficient piece of high temperature metallurgical plant and operation known to man. The conversion of this molten iron into steel by the oxygen injection process has made available to the engineering industry steel of a quality and at a price which is quite remarkable. Yet this vast metallurgical pyramid rests on the completely insecure and uncertain foundation of inadequate world resources of coking coal. The shortage of reserves of coking coal in this country is acute and it is possible that these resources will be exhausted within the next twenty years. Yet unless some completely unexpected catastrophe occurs the demand for steel in this country will probably rise at a faster rate than in the Western world due to the expansion of the Bantu population and the increased standard of living. To offset the inevitable shortage of coking coal are our much greater resources of bituminous coal which although of low grade provide a suitable fuel for electric power generation. The geographical disposition of the coal fields in relation to the great industrial areas of the Transvaal makes it inevitable that the development of the pyrometallurgical industries must depend heavily on electric power. The position in this country with regard to electrical power generation and consumption is rather anomalous. Per capita consumption of electric power is high - in 1964 almost twice the world average of 870 KWH and twenty-five times the average of 34 KWH for the Continent of Africa. In 1964 fifty-four per cent of the total world electric power was used in industry - the ratio being approximately 1/9 mining to manufacturing uses. As shown in Table I in 1969 67.2 per cent of the total output of electric power from ESCOM was used for mining and other industrial uses but almost in the ratio 6/4 mining to industrial uses. These figures emphasise the enormous importance of the mining industry to the economy of this country and underline the major contribution made by the gold mining industry. What is of very significant importance is that although the mining industry remains by far the largest single consumer of electrical power the consumption of power for industrial uses is rising rapidly as shown in Table II.

Hochtief AG Germany has developed a comprehensive management and information system for the construction industry named Aristoteles. This system is an efficient supporting tool to manage a variety of construction sites as well as operating business units with required economic targets. As such, Aristoteles offers wide-ranging control of complex economic processes in construction in a consistent manner. In this paper the process oriented functions of the system will be described with special emphasis on finance accounting and cost control. The basic elements in this respect are tender estimation, creation of initial project budgets and running budgets, regular determination of work done and result forecast to the end of the project. Further, cost accounting, monthly reporting, and all balance-related postings are included. On the basis of the extensive reporting (targeted/actual cost comparison, cost manager, project report, actual/targeted hours worked comparison, overhead cost report, amendment report or project (result) lists of all projects realized by one business unit), the responsible managers can make justified project evaluations, project controls and variance analyses during the project period and derive appropriate management measures. Thus, Aristoteles includes all substantial elements for the risk management of the operational business. In big construction joint-stock companies it is of crucial importance to satisfy the information requirements of the investors. In this respect the system provides a transparent presentation of the financial, investment and profitability situation of the company. In the international construction industry the balancing rules according to IAS (International Accounting Standards) have already been used to a larger extent. In accordance with these rules the partial profits of the work during execution can be shown as realized even before completion of a long-term contract. The validity of Aristoteles will be outlined briefly. Major advantages using the system are highly enhanced accuracy of project controlling, systematic overhead allocation to projects, change of attitude of the project personnel due to increased cost consciousness and improved flow of information within the company.

JoughinMr Turgay Gurun, in presenting his paper, indicated that this simulator was no purely theoretical exercise, but that the model had been used in the design of crushing plants of capacities ranging from 3 000 tons per day to 66 000 tons per day, and that recently the design of a plant of capacity of 99 000 tons per day had been studied.The crushing plant simulator was an independent portion of a much more comprehensive simulator for the design of a. complete recovery plant. It would be possible to use each section of this simulator on its own, and simulators would be designed to cover flotation concentrates, cash flow analyses of the entire project, and so on.Each simulator would be backed by a comprehensive data bank. For example, the crushing plant simulator was backed by such a data bank which included the performance and cost data from five manufacturers for an average of 30 items of process and materials handling equipment each. This meant that data preparation involved generally less work than would be required for a manual calculation. On average, data preparation for one run took 30 minutes and three minutes of computer time on an IBM 360/40 completed the run. The model could be valuable as a design tool in that it allowed the designers an opportunity to make a thorough examination of many alternative designs. It was also of value to plant operators as it could be used to predict the consequences of operating decisions.This paper generated much interest and there were numerous questions and contributions, so many, in fact, that the discussion had to be cut short.It was pointed out by Mr K. F. Lane that crushing plants represented a very large capital investment. A plant designed for 40 000 tons per day at 98 per cent efficiency might well in practice be run at 50 000 tons per day at, say, 83 per cent efficiency. He asked how, therefore, their design could be investigated without building economic criteria into the model? The author conceded that this was a tender point. He would have liked to have given facilities for more variability of the metallurgical information. He pointed out, however, that while there was no overdesign for conservatism built into his system, some overdesign was inevitable as the performance characteristics given by the manufacturers were generally conservative. Also, in his system, if lower recovery was allowed for, the system would nut through more tonnage."

BRERETON* (Visitor) This paper describes the discovery and recovery of gold, over a period dating back to the 1870s. on the farms Lisbon and Berlyn, situated approxim ately 1I km north-east of Pilgrims Rest. where mining ceased in July 1971. 99 years after gold was first discovered in the Pilgrims Rest and Sabie districts. Included in the paper are accounts of the discovery and mining operations of the Lisbon-Berlyn Company from 1884 to 1890. The operations of small companies and syndicates. the superficial winning of gold by diggers, and the encouraging reports of four mining engineers in 1890 are also mentioned.

In this paper we present The Ultimate Flotation Cell, a newly developed flotation cell that is proving very popular in the industry. All flotation cells have only one purpose and that is the recovery of the required product, the patented impeller and disperser system of the Ultimate Flotation Cell allows total flexibility in order to achieve the optimal recovery. This ability to tune the cell performance provides the optimization of the ?capture? (collection) stage, all existing models address the need for a wide bubble size distribution (100µm-2 mm) to obtain a better flotation size-by-size, Yoon, 1999,Yoon 2000, Franzidis and Manlapig, 1999. The Ultimate Flotation Cell provides flexible performance optimization. This ability to optimize the flotation regime particular to a specific ore is achieved by the following factors: ? The impeller allows vastly improved air induction rates compared to conventional and sparged cells. This ability to induce and disperse large quantities of air, in a controlled manner, allows the cells to be tuned to give the optimal Sb by varying the rotational speed via a VSD which every cell is fitted with. ? The patented impeller gives a very constant and stable air induction rate, which ensures that the cell?s circulation pattern is constant, giving a very stable surface, allowing optimal froth depth. ? Despite its growth over the years, necessitating ever¬larger office accommodation, the Gold Fields group changed its head office address in Johannesburg only twice in 94 years. The first move was at the turn of the century, from the then select suburb of Doornfontein to the corner of Fox and Simmonds Streets. The second move was in the thirties, from that address-now the Reserve Bank building-to the well-known address of 75 Fox Street. With the advent of the first mines of the West Wits Line by the end of the thirties, 75 Fox Street proved too small, and the eastern section of the Commissioner Street side of the present head office was added on. In the fifties, when space once more became a serious problem, the old Exploration building was purchased and demolished, and the present west wing on Commissioner Street was built on the site. In the early seventies, cramped conditions again made life difficult and, despite a reorganization of the interior layouts, the need for expansion remained critical. Eventually, the adjacent Hollard Place and parking area became available, and plans for an extended new building complex could he considered. The building project was

Computational modelling methods and isothermal titration calorimetry (ITC) were employed to investigate the interaction of a pyrite surface with thiol collectors. Modelling work was conducted in the presence and absence of water. Microcalorimetry was employed to investigate the resultant energy of interaction pyrite as a result of mineral-collector interactions. Sodium ethyl xanthate (SEX), diethyldithiocarbamate (DTC) and diethyl dithiophosphate (DTP) were investigated in this study. The results showed that the calculated surface energies and morphologies for FeS2 showed that (100) and (111) are the most stable surfaces. The morphology also indicated the appearance of the (100) and (111) surface facets and no presence of others. The calculated adsorption energies between thiol collectors and the pyrite surface were always more exothermic than the experimentally determined ones. When comparing different ligand types with the same alkyl chain length, the heat of adsorption of diethyl-DTC was greater than that of ethyl xanthate and diethyl-DTP for pyrite. Experimentally, the diethyl DTP barely adsorbed onto the pyrite surface and this may be due to a different mechanism of action. In computational calculations, water adsorption was found to reduce the reactivity of the Fe atom for the interaction with thiol collectors, and bring the adsorption energies closer to the magnitude of the experimental values. Long blast hole drilling has been successfully implemented since the 1950s in caving operations, steeply dipping wide reefs and boxhole/raise developments worldwide. However, when applying long hole drilling to narrow tabular reefs, the challenges of achieving high economic drilling rates, combined with acceptable accuracy and appropriate powder factors have yet to be overcome. The focus in this paper is the selection, application and optimization of long hole drilling equipment at mining operations shallower than 2 000 meters. The drilling, blasting and cleaning operations have to be optimized as a process if maximum production at minimum per unit cost is to be achieved. For this to be possible, it is essential that the mine design and layout match the mining process being implemented. The critical parameters affecting the sustainable implementation of long hole drilling in stoping applications for platinum mines are improved safety and higher production rates compared to conventional methods. In terms of drilling, both top hammer and down-the hole hammer configurations have been considered. For economic drilling, the benefits of monitoring and optimizing performance (i.e. drill bit rotation, thrust, and percussive power) for specific rock types are discussed. While the drive is for longer, more accurate, smaller diameter holes to reduce drilling costs, the design of appropriate blast hole patterns and the corresponding charging and initiation systems is crucial for success. The effect of hole diameter and pattern on the powder factor, when comparing small diameter, shorter holes versus large diameter, longer holes, is a major factor in achieving good blasting results. Once appropriate drilling and blasting have been implemented, the cleaning process becomes a potentially critical operation to ensure the production, cost and safety goals are met. Hence, the blast hole pattern and charge have to be integrated for optimal fragmentation to suit the cleaning cycle for maximum production output. Providing that long blast hole drilling is applied as a process in a planned, committed and well-managed manner, the benefits in safety, production and cost over conventional methods should be achievable. However, if the implementation process is not planned and supported by all parties concerned, it will not be possible to succeed in the new operation. Hence, an implementation or roll-out plan of new technology is crucial for success.

The Kroll process is the traditional method of producing zirconium metal by reduction of zirconium tetrachloride with magnesium metal. This paper discusses the production of zirconium metal in a plasma reactor. Anhydrous low-hafnium ZrCl4 and Mg metal were fed continuously to a 30 kW non-transfer plasma reactor at a rate of 0.31 kg.h-1. Due to losses in the system the recovery of crude product was 77.5 %. After purification to remove unreacted feed material and MgCl2 by leaching, >98 % pure zirconium metal powder was obtained. The overall recovery of purified Zr was 74 %. The conversion efficiency of the process was 95 %.

The theory of geostatistics covers a branch of .applied statistics aimed at a mathematical description and analysis of geological observations. Geostatistics can be used in pure geology (for example, for the analysis of trace elements in a metamorphic rock), in mineral exploration (for example, for the analysis of geochemical exploration data), as well as in mine valuation. This book is intended to provide a practical introduction to the theory of geostatistical methods of mineral evaluation. Over the years, various mathematical models have been developed to represent the distribution of values in mineral deposits. The simpler models are based on the assumption that the values are randomly distributed. Classical statistical methods, based on this assumption of the random distribution of values, are used to analyse mineral deposits to which these models apply or are assumed to apply. In all mineral deposits, however, one recognizes the presence of areas where the values are higher or lower than elsewhere. Also, the values of two samples in a mineral deposit are more likely to be similar if the samples are taken close together than if they are taken far apart. This indicates that there exists a degree of correlation between sample values, and that this correlation is a function of the distance between the samples. Models have been developed which take this correlation into consideration, with the degree of correlation between sample values being usually measured by the semivariogram function. In these models the fact that two samples taken next to each other will most probably not have the same value, must also be considered; even for very short distances the correlations are usually not perfect and a purely random component is present in the value distribution. The mathematical models will therefore assume the presence of two sources of variability in the values: a correlated component and a random component. Finally, one must consider the particular and very common case of mineral deposits in which the values present a systematic variation in space. This variation is usually referred to as a drift, or a trend. For example, the grade of an ore body may increase with depth of the ore, or it may decrease when one moves away from a central volcanic pipe. The earlier models did not give a satisfactory representation of drifts, and more complex models have been developed, in which three sources of variation are represented. These models are made up of: a deterministic component, a correlated component, and a random component. The deterministic component is used as a model of the drift. The correlated component explains regular changes in values which are not represented by the drift. The random component represents variations which cannot be explained by any of the above factors. The simpler models, based on the assumption of a single random component, will be described first (Chapter 2). The models based on the hypothesis of the superimposition of a correlated component on a random component, will then be analysed in detail. These models are most commonly used in the analysis of mineral deposits (Chapters 3-1 I). Finally, how to deal with the presence of a drift will be briefly described (Chapter 12). This book has been written essentially for students in mining engineering and for mining engineers who are interested in the background to the theory of geostatistics as well as its practical applications. The assumption is made that the reader has an elementary knowledge of statistics. Some knowledge of linear algebra is useful in part of Chapter 9, and is necessary to read Chapter 12. A proof is given of all the equations related to geostatistics, and which are not usually found in elementary textbooks on statistics. Understanding of these proofs is not necessary for practical application of the theory, and the reader may wish to skip them on a first reading, concentrating attention on the numerous simple practical examples given. Although the theoretical geostatistician will not find much new material in this publication, it is anticipated that he will develop some interest in the practical approach chosen to prove the various geostatistical equations. Many people and institutions contributed to the preparation and completion of this work. I am much indebted to Dr D. G. Krige and the Anglo Transvaal Consolidated In- vestment Company Limited, who gave me the opportunity to spend a considerable amount of time working on geostatistical problems, both theoretical and practical, during the time that I was in their employment. TRAVEL GRANTS Travel grants each of £300 are available in respect of journeys to Britain undertaken between 1st April, 1971 and 31st March, 1972 and are provided to facilitate visits to British universities by persons holding staff appointments or graduate research posts at South African universities. SYNOPSIS This paper describes the process adopted for the recovery of gold from a dump originating from clean-up operations at Durban Roodepoort Deep Gold Mine. The gold-bearing dump material was refractory in nature, not being amenable to cyanidation because of the high level of carbonaceous material present. The laboratory tests on the material involved particle-size and chemical analyses, a mineralogical examination of the material, preliminary tests, and optimization of the process for the treatment of the dump material. The preliminary tests included tests on roasting, flotation, pre-leaching, adsorbent-in-leach, and blinding. Of these options, carbon-in-leach showed the greatest potential. The rate of gold dissolution, the rate of gold adsorption by the carbonaceous material, and the ratio of carbon to pulp were then investigated. It was determined that the ratio of carbon to pulp necessary to yield a reasonable gold recovery resulted in a carbon loading that was not high enough for economic elution and regeneration. A process incorporating washing of the carbon with cold acid between adsorption cycles was tested, and reasonable gold recoveries and carbon loadings were obtained. Durban Roodepoort Deep Gold Mine piloted the conceptualized process and determined that it was economically feasible. Two Browns tanks on site were modified, and an acid-wash tank was installed. The capital outlay for the plant was recovered within some 3 months.
