"In my Presidential address last year `The Institute in Retrospect and Prospect', I briefly reviewed the past activities of our Institute, I commented on the dynamic growth of the mineral activity of this country and of the great contribution towards this growth made by members of this Institute. I maintained that there was still further growth to come, pointing out that our future would be very much dependent on the availability and skills of our mining and metallurgical men. This Institute had, therefore, a most important task ahead to ensure that this country would have the necessary skilled engineers to develop our mineral industry so that we would be able to compete successfully in the wide world. In my address I highlighted many of the major achievements of our members and of our Institute. In today's review, I have no wish to repeat myself and I would, therefore, ask members and visitors to regard this review as complementary to my presidential address. I must also refer you to the very full resume of our affairs written for a special brochure in March, 1944, by E. H. Johnson, a founder member, on the occasion of our 50th Anniversary. There is no need to repeat what was given there, rather I will attempt to bring that history up to date. Our Institute was founded under the name of Chemical and Metallurgical Society of South Africa on 24th March, 1894, by a group of chemists and metallurgists The name was changed to Chemical, Metallurgical and Mining Society of South Africa early in 1903, and in July, 1956 became The South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy. We were not the first technical organisation in South Africa, the S.A. Association of Engineers and Architects having been formed in 1892. In that year also the British Institution of Mining and Metallurgy started in London. Training in the mining industry by W. S. Nel, B. A. (Wits) (Visitor) After defining training and discussing the present level oftraining in the South African Mining Industry, the paper proposes the adoption of a centralized training system for the Industry and suggests several ways in which this should function. The finance required for the implementation and running of such a system should be obtained from State aid and from the institution of a levy and grant system for the whole Industry.

The paper describes the issues that should be considered when introducing mechanization to a mining operation. In South Africa, traditional methods of mining are well entrenched after more than a century of mining. To successfully change from these methods requires an integrated holistic approach that considers all aspects of a mining operation including setting of objectives, selection of personnel, recruitment, training and remuneration policies, organizational design, mine design, equipment selection, maintenance philosophy, standards and procedures, and monitoring and control. The paper makes reference to experience gained during a variety of on-mine case studies in drawing generic conclusions and making recommendations.

The paper gives the reasons for the development of a gold alloy of 990 fineness with good colour, durability, and mechanical properties, and explains why titanium was chosen as the alloying metal. Methods are described for the alloy?s production, solutionizing, and age-hardening. Mechanical properties are given as a function of deformation, age-hardening time, and temperature for three different starting states, and these properties are compared with those of some standard 14 and 18 ct jewelery alloys and pure gold. The effects of various salts and fluxes on the composition of the alloy after heat treatment at 1150, 800, and 500°C are discussed. These indicate how alloy scrap can be refined to pure gold, and how solutionizing and agehardening can be conducted without the use of vacuum equipment. The results of wear tests indicate that the alloy is more durable than normal coinage and jewelery alloys. Tips are given on the grain refining, soldering, and casting of the alloy.

Surface Plasmon Resonance spectroscopy (SPR), combined with cyclovoltammetry, has been successfully used to study the interactions between ethyl xanthate, heptyl xanthate, dithiophosphate and propyl trithiocarbonate flotation collectors and a gold surface. Large, easily measurable responses have been obtained in the potential areas where the thiol collectors are known to interact with gold. The four collector types lead to differing SPR maximum values, with longer alkyl chains resulting in higher SPR responses, and the trithiocarbonate leading to the highest response values. The SPR responses differ considerably from the current density response at very anodic and cathodic potentials. There are indications that thiols might still be adsorbed at potentials as low as -300 mV (vs SHE). Book review Doyle, William S. Strip Mining of Coal; Environmental solutions. Park Ridge (New Jersey), 1976. 352 pp. $32. Surface mining of coal is still in its infancy in South Africa. The environmental repercussions following large-scale disturbance of the land surface, and the secondary effects of the disposal of waste products and effluents from mining, have not yet become apparent.

Tailings produced from the iron ore industry present many challenges due to the high economic and environmental impacts involved with their disposal. However, the relative scarcity of high-grade iron ores has driven manufacturers to recover and recycle these valuable tailings (secondary sources). This study aimed at the purification of ultrafine tailings with high sulphur content from an iron ore concentrator via reverse flotation to produce pellet feed fines. A specially designed flotation column featured with a nano bubble generator and a conventional bubble generator were employed to assess the effects of nano bubbles on the desulfurisation performance of iron ore concentrate under different operating conditions. Results obtained from this study indicated that the sulphur content of iron concentrate could be reduced from 1.2% to 0.22% in the presence of nano bubbles. Also, the results showed that use of nano-micro bubbles increased sulphur recovery 20% more, in comparison to micro bubbles. South Africa produces about 400 Kt zircon (ZrSiO4) per annum. This represents about 30 percent of the global demand. However, very little is beneficiated locally and more than 95 percent is exported with little or no value addition. Zircon is a very inert material and needs to undergo high-temperature alkaline melting processes to produce valuable zirconium products. The conversion of zircon to plasma-dissociated zircon (PDZ) produces a chemically reactive species (ZrO2.SiO2) which consist of finely divided submicron monoclinic ZrO2 crystals dispersed in a SiO2 matrix. In this paper, an in-flight, non-transferred arc pilot plasma plant with a capacity of 100 kg/h and which consists of three 150 kW DC plasma torches, is described. The optimization of the plant, which includes the use of different zircon concentrates, the influence of particle size, feed rates, plasma gas, and energy utilization, is discussed.

Extractive metallurgy in Iron Age South Africa U. S. KUSEL, B.A. Hons. (Pta) (Visitor) The finds relating to the metal-working of Iron Age Bantu tribes are reviewed, the following metals or alloys being considered: gold, tin, copper, bronze, brass, and iron. Most is known about copper- and iron-working, but even this is very little, and no one has successfully been able to demonstrate how iron was smelted in the primitive furnaces that have been found.

Automation of mining operations is pushed by cost pressure and cyclical product prices. However, until now the different types of equipment were not able to communicate electronically with each other or with central computer systems. Therefore, the International Rock Excavation Data Exchange Standard (IREDES) was launched by major players in the industry. The task of this initiative is to define a ‘common electronic language’ for easy and standardized data exchange. As in other industries, this standard is expected to have significant impact on the use of automation in general and on the markets for third party components and software. The standard’s technical architecture is open and flexible for future applications. It consists of an ‘horizontal’ structure defining ‘Application Profiles’ for different types of data sets. An additional ‘vertical’ structure (‘Equipment Profiles’) implements equipment dependent definitions for each of the applicable Application Profiles. First profiles will be available for Drill Rigs. The standard bases on the XML language thus enabling easy data exchange with commercial databases. IREDES data sets may use storage media as well as networking infrastructures for information exchange. The IREDES work is carried out by the initiative members working jointly together in the IREDES work groups. It is open for participation of all interested organizations. First prototyping applications are expected to start during 2001, the first products may be available in the following year. Historical Background The Empire Council of Mining and Metallurgical Institutions was formed during the early 1920s to foster the holding of British Empire Conferences, and today is representative of the following Institutes: Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy Canadian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy Geological Society of South Africa Institute of Petroleum Institution of Metallurgists Institution of Mining and Metallurgy Institution of Mining Engineers Metals Society Mining, Geological and Metallurgical Institute of India South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy South Wales Institute of Engineers. The first public suggestion for the formation of a Council that would link mining institutions in various parts of the British Empire came from Mr Frank Merricks, who, as President of the Institution of Mining and Metallurgy, was speaking at the annual dinner of the IMM in 1921.

This symposium, being held at The President Hotel, Johannesburg on 9th-11th September, 1969, is being jointly sponsored by The South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, The South African Corrosion Council and the Southern Africa Stainless Steel Development Association, and supported by the C.S.I.R. The three days of technical sessions, at which 350 delegates are expected, will include introductory films on the properties and uses of stainless steels, papers on corrosion problems and prevention, design and economics, welding and applications in industries of particular importance to South Africa. The programme includes four overseas guest speakers who are acknowledged leaders in their respective fields. The paper describes the design options available for the simultaneous production of liquid sulphur dioxide, via cryogenic condensation, and sulphuric acid in a sulphur-burning sulphuric acid plant. The impact of the operating conditions of the cryogenic condensation on plant capital and operating costs are discussed, with the main focus on the optimization of the most important economic and operative drivers of the non-ferrous mining industry, such as energy efficiency, reliability, and availability. A case history relevant to an integrated sulphurburning plant producing liquid sulphur dioxide and sulphuric acid, recently started up in the Democratic Republic of Congo, is described. Over 200 delegates attended the SAIMM Colloquium on Flotation, which was held at Mintek on 22nd September, 1983. In introducing the programme, the Chairman of the Technical Programme Committee, Mr Eugene Fivaz, said that an attempt had been made to strike a balance between theoretical and practical papers, which he hoped would provide something for everyone. He wished to record in advance the thanks of the Institute to S.A. Cyanamid for sponsoring the lunch, and to Bateman Equipment Limited for the cocktail party to be held at the end of the day's proceedings.
