The paper presents details of the costs and outputs being achieved by South African mechanized tunneling and stoping drillings. The information was gathered from various hard-rock mining and tunneling operations ranging from deep-level gold mines to shallow base-metal mines. The survey included older pneumatic rigs and the newer electro-hydraulic rigs, but excluded shaft drilling and the stope drillings that were developed recently for narrow reefs. The information presented is intended as a guide to those having to decide whether to use mechanized drillings and, if so, what type and quantity

Discussion of the above paper by G. J. van JAARSVELDt Mr Ortlepp's paper is important, and deals with a subject towards which much controversy and insufficient basic scientific logic, in my opinion, have been directed. He attempts to remedy some of our unscientific popular misconceptions, and for this we thank him. However, I regret to say that experience has shown that some of his statements cannot be allowed to pass unchallenged. Author's reply Mr Van Jaarsveld's contribution is welcome because it provides an opportunity for me to clarify certain points that were perhaps not adequately explained in the paper.

An ERR-based methodology is presented for use in the re-assessment of the performance of stabilizing pillars, taking into account the effects of fracturing that can occur in pillar foundations under conditions of high stress. It is shown that the damage in the foundations of under-designed pillars can cause up to 30 per cent increases in ERR compared with the ERR for pillars with unfractured foundations. Despite this reduction in assessed performance, stabilizing pillars are still generally found to result in substantially lower ERR levels than alternative methods of reducing ERR, such as the use of stiff backfill or backfill ribs.

The lift system is the main part in manganese nodule mining on the ocean bed. It connects the nodule collection system (miner) with the surface platform (mining vessel) and transports the nodules from the ocean bed to the surface. China started the research on lift technology in deep ocean mining in 1991, and a slurry pump hydraulic lift method has been developed for the nodule mining system. The detailed slurry pump hydraulic lift experiments have been undertaken with crushed nodules in the vertical pipe. The lift parameters to lift coarse particles in the lift pipeline have been discussed, including the pressure drop, the solid concentration, and the mixture velocity. The author of this paper not only took part in all these studies on the lifting technology, but was also responsible for some of this research. This paper will present the component parts of the lift system and the research results of coarse particle mixture flow in the vertical lift pipeline. Some of the factors that govern the choice of a nuclear fuel are briefly discussed, special reference being made to the introduction of advanced carbide fuels into fast-breeder programmes. One of these factors, i.e. the compatibility of carbide fuels with stainless-steel cladding, is discussed in depth. A very sensitive technique for the study of compatibility interactions between fuel and cladding is described in respect to the effects of particle size, specific surface area and surface oxidation of the fuel,and microstructure of the cladding on the compatibility behaviour of the cladding with the fuels. Finally, the need for the development of modified or stabilized uranium carbide fuels is discussed, and some results are presented to show the effects of small amounts of sulphur in these fuels on their compatibility with stainless-steel cladding materials.

The effects of shaft pillars left in deep-level hard-rock mines during the extraction of tabular deposits were studied some time ago, resulting in the formulation of design principles and procedures, which have been used with success in the design of shaft pillars in the deep-level gold mines of South Africa. The method has not yet been utilized in the design of shaft pillars in shallow and moderately deep hard-rock mines. The purpose of the present study was to remedy the situation since a great number of deposits are worked at those depths. The object of this paper is to present governing equations for the components of stress and differential movement as derived by use of an elastic model. The pillar is taken to be circular in the plane of a horizontal deposit. On the basis of the numerical results obtained, a study was made of the distribution of the vertical strain and tilt along the axis of the shaft, and of the vertical stress along the shaft and across the pillar. In every case investigated, the most adverse geometry was taken into consideration. By use of an empirical criterion and the results of some in situ observations, the determination of pillar dimensions and differential displacement components for South African gold-mining conditions is demonstrated. Pillar dimensions for shallow and moderate depths are compared with those accepted for deep-level conditions.

SYNOPSIS This review article first highlights the past performance of the industry and discusses the manner in which the development of the industry has followed a logical progression from mining to the production of mineral and metal products of specification purity. Then the numerous constraints against a greater contribution by the industry are enumerated. Attention is drawn to the extent of further processing that can be undertaken in the context of mining and metallurgical processing, not only to indicate the benefits that can be derived from the added-value conferred on a mineral or metal commodity during each stage of its further processing, but also to point out some important corollaries of further processing. The many opportunities and challenges for an increased contribution by the minerals and metals industry are then reviewed. This major section includes a list of commodities for which increased penetration of export markets could be sought because the increasing resistance level (a term developed in this paper) has not been attained; a list of commodities that are imported at present, many of which could be produced locally on the basis of identified resources and expertise; a list of commodities for which additional uses should be developed so that South Africa, which possesses the largest reserves and is the largest exporter, can increase its production rate; and examples of commodities for which further processing is still at an early stag*..

This paper describes the development of large-scale thermal-plasma systems, which was motivated, in general, by the potential cost savings that could be achieved by their use as a replacement for the more conventional methods used in the generation of thermal energy. The anticipated cost savings arise not only from the use of plasma-generating devices but from the manner in which they have been interfaced with a furnace to process particular materials, mostly as fines. Thermal-plasma systems fall into two categories: non-transferred-arc and transferred-arc devices. In general, transferred-arc devices have been interfaced with open-bath furnaces in which melting or smelting processes carried out, while non-transferred-arc devices have normally been applied to shaft furnaces. Water-cooled transferred-arc devices are somewhat limited in power (about 5 MW) because of the relatively voltages (300 to 500 V) that can be attained in open-bath furnaces, where very long arcs are undesirable, and because only relatively low levels of current can be carried. Graphite electrodes can overcome the restriction current, and power levels of 30 to 50 MW seem feasible, even with one electrode, if direct current is used. Multiple water-cooled devices are capable of attaining similar power levels, but the capital costs are much higher. Costs due to electrode wear are lower for water-cooled systems, but expensive gases are needed for transferred-arc devices. Mintek conducted extensive pilot-plant work in which water-cooled devices were used initially but graphite electrodes were used subsequently to produce ferochromium from fines. Transferred-arc open-bath configurations were used. This work led to a decision by Middelburg Steel & Alloys (MS&A) to install a 16 MVA furnace of semindustrial scale to produce ferochromium aloys based on the ASEA d.c. arc furnace developed for the Elred process. Non-transferred-arc devices have atained reasonable scale-up to the 6 to8 MW power level, and high-voltage operation, which is inherent in such devices, has enabled lower currents to be used. Nevertheless, multiple systems are still necessary to accommodate large-scale applications, and this can be costly from a capital point of view. The cooling requirements are large, and can represent a considerable loss of electric energy. Shaft furnaces equipped with non-transferred-arc devices are suitable for the processing of materials that have volatile species, e.g. silica or manganese, or where the shaft is used to prereduce oxides that are amenable to gas-solid reactions. It is probably in the treatment of light and refractory metals that plasma technology will achieve its greatest development in the years to come. The energy requirements for the production of these metals are high, and very low oxygen potentials are necessary. These are factors that favour thermal plasma. Much developmental work is still needed in this interesting field. It should be remembered that electrically generated thermal energy is a unique temperature source that, in many instances, cannot be replaced technically or economically by the combustion of a fuel.

This paper describes in broad outline the development of a computer programme for determining the effects of changes in various factors in the condenser water circuit on the operation of a cooling plant. The programme is used to obtain design figures which result in minimum total power consumption. This was done for a range of different upcast air quantities, and the implications of low air quantities for heat rejection are discussed.

In this article, a case is made for the importance of the transfer and management of tacit knowledge to ensure continued sustainable competitive advantage within the pyrometallurgical industry in South Africa. The state of knowledge management (KM) is assessed through a theoretical and empirical study. The empirical part of the study was conducted by means of a survey questionnaire. An important prerequisite within the research entailed determining the current state of KM within the pyrometallurgical industry, and the findings are presented throughout this article. The research argues for initiatives to address the high turnover of pyrometallurgical knowledge workers. This industry needs to entrench tacit knowledge and therefore address the problems associated with the continuous loss of inherent specialized knowledge. Appropriately, emphasis is placed on identifying initiatives required to embed and retain not only human capital lost through mobility, but rather retaining tacit knowledge through a practical KM framework.

As you pointed out, furnace power factor (and consequently transformer MVA rating) depends upon the inductive reactance, and so it is desirable to design for the lowest possible value of this parameter. The further introduction on the primary side of the transformer of capacitors, whether in shunt or in series, increases the network power factor but does not alter the furnace power factor; that is, the phase angle between electrode to- hearth voltage and current remains unchanged. With the advent in recent years qf mechanization in deep-level gold and platinum mines, large quantities of rubber was are being used on both production and support vehicles. Conditions in these types of mines are extremely harsh and, as a result, we performance is significantly lower than in other types of mining such as open-cast base metal mining, where more favourable conditions prevail. Various options are available to the user to reduce tyre costs, including the use of retreads, the filing of tyres, and the repair of damaged tyres. While these methods may be generally successful in open-cast conditions, their use in deep-level mining needs to be carefully evaluated for each particular set of conditions. A basic requirement for any evaluation of we costs is the availability of reliable data on tyre performance and, for this reason, it is essential that proper tyre records are maintained This paper reviews the performance of tyres in deep-level gold and platinum mines in Johannesburg Consolidated Investment Company, Limited (JCI) over a period of about 8 years, and shows how the costs of retreading and tyre filing can be evaluated in practice. It also discusses the cost implications of repairing damaged tyres.

In any mining enterprise, the extraction of the ore from the orebody is of vital importance. This activity is stoping. The gold mines of the Witwatersrand and its extensions in the Klerksdorp, Welkom, and Evander areas form the most extensive goldfield in the world. This address reviews stoping technology and improvements in this technology since the end of the Second World War. Although the reefs that make up the Witwatersrand orebody are uniquely extensive, they are not suited to mechanized mining. This is due to a number of factors such as the depth of the orebody, its narrowness, and the hardness and abrasiveness of the quartzite forming the orebody. The most notable improvements in stoping technology have been brought about because of our beter understanding of rock-engineering problems. This has resulted in beter layouts, stoping geometry, systems of aleviating rock stresses, and support systems. It has enabled the industry, at ever-greater mining depths, to maintain and even increase productivity. These improvements, based on rock engineering, have significantly reduced the accidents due to rockbursts. There are many diferences between today's stoping and that practised forty years ago. Panels are shorter, concentrated mining has superseded bench mining, and the support systems are certainly better. Yet the face scraper is still used extensively, as are pneumatic rock drills. Some innovative stoping systems that have given rise to improved productivity are discussed. Explosives technology has shown spectacular advances during the period under review. Sadly, our local industry has had little to do with this research and development, but has been most adaptive in using the new products on offer.

A brief review of the development and ultimate design of the Model 16 Photometric Sorter is given, including the differences between it and its predecessor, the Model 13, which is currently in operation at Doornfontein. A description of the West Driefontein sorting plant is given, together with the rationale of its design. The installation programme for the sorters is described, and current operating and maintenance procedures are discussed. Operating results are tabulated and compared with the original test results. Operating costs are also discussed.

Various theories proposed to account for microbial corrosion are reviewed as a background to a better understanding of this type of corrosion in iron-based alloys. Experimental evidence is presented to show that even stainless-steel alloys are prone to microbial attack by sulphate-reducing bacteria. The corrosive attack by the bacteria is due primarily to the hydrogen sulphide that is produced as part of their metabolic processes.

Mining is important to the economies of both Tanzania and Namibia. Recently, both nations revised their national mineral policies to ensure future economic benefit. The main difference in the mineral policy-formulation processes followed by the two countries is identified as the degree and timing of stakeholder involvement during the articulation process. In the case of Namibia, the stakeholders were involved from the start in identifying issues and in suggesting policy solutions. In contrast, the Tanzanian process involved stakeholders after a framework had been developed by a task team. The Tanzanian emphasis was on attracting foreign investment into a traditionally state enterprise system of mineral investment and development. One can argue that the policies developed met the initial requirements, and both are, therefore successful, despite the different processes of policy formulation that were used. However, several fundamental questions arise as a result of the two approaches. This paper attempts to answer these questions by providing a comparison of the processes used for developing and formulating the mineral policies of Tanzania and Namibia. It concludes that the Namibian consultative process is perhaps more sustainable in the long-term because of its wider public support. Time will tell which of these policy-formulation processes provides a basis for sustainable economic growth for developing mineral economies.

This paper gives a technical review of the history, occurrence, mining, and metallurgy of iron in South Africa. The reserves of iron ore worldwide and in South Africa are reviewed, and potential new developments In the iron-and-steel industry in South Africa are examined. The paper concludes that the exploitation of lower-grade iron deposits will probably supplement the reserves of high-grade hematite ore in the distant future, and that, accepting this scenario. South Africa will be well placed to provide iron ore for its expected internal steel requirements, as well as supplying quality Iron ore for the export market.
