In considering the available reserves of coal, the author points to the importance of improved recovery, and defines three extraction ratios: the geological extraction ratio (or exploitation factor), the economic extraction ratio (or mining factor), and the geometrical extraction ratio (or volumetric extraction factor). He discusses the factors affecting each of these ratios, and concludes that, although geological factors cannot be considered in isolation from technical and economic factors, the geological extraction factor is the most significant criterion of whether the best use is being made of coal resources.

(Member) The paper outlines some of the views on the relationship between work attitudes and performance, and examines evidence derived from relevant research done in the mining industry. It is suggested that higher productivity within any given system of mining can be attained if attention is paid to the four factors that represent the CORE of human work performance: Competence, Opportunity (or Organisation), Recognition (or Rewards), and Expectations (or Enrichment).

Blasting in a gold mine has to satisfy the following set of techno economic conditions: good fragmentation, minimum stopped width, minimum number of rock falls, cost effectiveness. Results of a comparative study of the performance of a Low Density Anfo (LDA) and a conventional Anfo (ANFEX) are discussed. LDA appears to be more cost effective. The same borehole volume can be charged with material of reduced specific gravity. The velocity of detonation (VOD) is increased in the case of LDA resulting in more breakage as a result of shock energy than from the energy in the gas phase. This leads to less damage to the excavation and more favourable breakage of the excavated rock. As a result the overall economics of the mining operation is improved.

The assessment of the stability performance of open pit highwalls has traditionally been based on consideration of surface movement rates. Although generally accepted in industry, this approach presents challenges for establishing appropriate threshold values to allow for safe mining operations and does not address the issue of total strain. Surface movement monitoring data from a limited number of open pit mining operations in North and South America has been evaluated in terms of highwall strain, rock mass quality and inferred mechanism of instability. Threshold strain levels for key stages of highwall stability proposed from previous work has been reviewed and are endorsed based on evaluation of additional data. An empirical highwall strain criteria for the assessment of highwall stability performance is postulated based on relatively consistent trends in highwall strain data. L’évaluation du niveau de stabilité des hauts murs de carrières a traditionnellement été basée sur les taux de mouvements de surfaces. Bien que cette approche soit généralement acceptée à travers l’industrie, elle présente des défis pour la définition de seuils appropriés concernant la sécurité des opérations minières et n’adresse pas la notion de déformations totales. Des données de mouvements de surface provenant d’un nombre limité d’opérations minières à ciel ouvert d’Amérique du Nord et du Sud ont été évaluées en terme de déformation des hauts murs, de qualité de la masse rocheuse et des mécanismes inférés d’instabilité. Des seuils de déformation pour différentes phases clefs de stabilité de hauts murs ont été revus et sont endossés, basé sur l'évaluation de donnés additionnelles. Un critère de déformation empirique pour l’évaluation de la stabilité des hauts murs est postulé, basé sur des tendances relativement consistantes de données de déformations de hauts murs. Die Beurteilung der Stabilität von hohen Felsböschungen basiert traditionellerweise von Oberflächenbewegungen. Obwohl dieses Verfahren im Allgemeinen akzeptiert wird, stellt es jedoch gewisse Probleme für die Festlegung von Grenzwerten für die Sicherheit dar. Die totalen Dehnungen werden bei dieser Betrachtungsweise vernachlässigt. Eine beschränkte Anzahl von Oberflächenbewegungs Daten von Bergbauwerke in Nord- und Südamerika sind in Bezug auf die Dehnungen von hohen Felsböschungen, Felsqualität und davon abgeleiteten Bruchmechanismen untersucht worden. Grenzwerte für die Belastung von hohen Felsböschungen während den massgebenden Bauetappen aus bisherigen Projekten sind begutachtet und durch zusätzliche Untersuchungen bestätigt worden. Gestützt auf relativ konsitenten Trends, ist hier ein empirisches Verfahren der Dehnungen in hohen Felsböschungen zur Beurteilung der Stabilität vorgestellt.

The paper compares operational parameters for the electric reduction smelting of pig iron and ferroalloys in pilot and industrial furnaces. Data from two pilot furnaces of approximately 200 and 500 kW operating-load capacity, as well as from several production furnaces, are included. Examples are given for the smelting of pig iron, ferronickel, ferromanganese, ferrochromium, and ferrosilicon. In most instances, the results from the pilot furnaces, such as the values for consumption and product analyses, corresponded fairly well with comparable data from the industrial furnaces. For ferrosilicon, the power consumption in the pilot furnace was higher than that in the industrial furnace.

The spontaneous combustion of coal and the explosion of coal dust are two phenomena that were identified by the South African mining industry as requiring investigation. Research contracts were awarded to the G.P. Badenhorst Research Facility of the CSIR and the Department of Mining Engineering of the university of the Witwatersrand by the now defunct National Energy Council. Both projects entailed tests on numerous coal samples in specially designed apparatus. Since the completion of the project, attempts have been made to predict experimental results without incurring the cost of performing experiments. This paper describes predictive indices, based on routine laboratory tests, that were developed by the different research teams for their particular projects. A comparison of the results obtained by applying the spontaneous combustion liability index and the explosibility index to common coal samples indicates that, in general, propensity to spontaneous combustion and explosibility exhibit an inverse relationship. A brief overview is given of some major South African coal-mine disasters.

The data on heat stroke cases reported during the past five years were examined to determine the influence of age on the incidence of heat stroke. Relating the age distribution of these cases to that of the total number of Bantu mine workers showed clearly that the older men run a significantly higher risk of developing heat stroke than the younger men. Although the number of Bantu over 40 years of age in the industry is less than 10 per cent of the total they nevertheless accounted for 50 per cent of the fatal heat stroke and 25 per cent of the nonfatal heat stroke cases during the period under review. Age must, therefore, be recognised as a causal factor in heat stroke and the worker over 40 years of age should be allocated to work on surface, or in cool areas or to non-strenuous and supervisory tasks in hot areas.

The integration of various highly sophisticated IT applications has been implemented at Bafokeng Rasimone Platinum Mine, a new platinum mine in the Anglo Platinum Group. This system is required to assist with compiling the necessary geological and grade information together with safety, environmental, ventilation, rock engineering and logistical constraints, to allow the design of the appropriate mining layout, to schedule this design, provide the necessary output for technical review and costing as well as budgeting to allow medium- and long-term business planning. In addition the production management and short-term planning needs must be met. This includes the plotting of all underground and surface infrastructure and excavations, giving the necessary mining and best cut instructions, daily production management, ore reserve and grade management as well as assisting with budgetary management. In addition all safety, health, environment and risk assessment requirements and legal requirements have to be met. The system at Bafokeng Rasimone Platinum Mine has met these criteria. An investigation was carried out to determine whether a numerical model could be constructed that would produce results that realistically represent actual ground deformations in and around a vertical shaft. The ground deformation was brought about by the partial extraction of the shaft pillar. A special characteristic of the rock masses, affected by the shaft pillar extraction, was that the shaft was located in poor quality rock masses. After the extraction of a portion of the shaft pillar, excessive deformations occurred at the shaft/reef intersection. Therefore, a decision was taken to extract the entire shaft pillar protecting the shaft by a proposed waste-cut across the shaft. The effects of stress and displacement on the shaft were investigated by using inelastic numerical modelling in different stages. A calibrated numerical model was constructed producing modelled results comparable to the actual displacements along the shaft. Des recherches ont été poursuivies pour déterminer si on pouvait construire un modèle numérique qui donnerait des résultats représentant avec réalisme les déformations réelles du terrain à l’intérieur et autour d’un puits vertical. La déformation du terrain était entraînée par l’extraction partielle du massif de protection. Une caractéristique spéciale des masses rocheuses, affectées par l’extraction du massif de protection, était que le puits était situé dans des masses rocheuses de qualité inférieure. Après l’extraction d’une portion du massif de protection, des déformations excessives se sont produites à l’intersection du puits avec le filon. Par conséquent, la décision a été prise d’extraire le massif de protection en entier par une coupe de déblais à travers le puits. Les effets de contraintes et décalage furent étudiés en utilisant une modélisation numérique inélastique à des stages différents. Un modèle numérique calibré fut construit, donnant des résultats modelés comparables aux décalages réels le long du puits. Eine Untersuchung wurde durchgeführt um festzustellen, ob ein numerisches Modell konstruiert werden könnte, das Resultate produzieren würde, welche realistisch aktuelle Bodendeformationen in und um einen vertikale Schacht darstellen. Die Bodendeformation resultierte teilweise aus der Extraktion des Schachtpfeiler. Eine spezielle Eigenschaft der Gesteinsmassen, beeinflußt durch die Schachtpfeilerextraktion, war, daß der Schacht in Gesteinsmassen geringer Qualität situiert war. Nach der Extraktion eines Teils der Schachtpfeiler, traten übermäßige Deformationen am Schacht/Riff Kreuzungspunkt auf. Folglich wurde die Entscheidung getroffen, die gesamten Schachtpfosten zu extrahieren und den Schacht mittels eines geplanten Verlustschnittes quer zum Schacht zu schützen. Die Auswirkungen des Druckes und der Versetzung auf den Schacht wurden unter Anwendung unelastischer numerischer Modelle in unterschiedlichen Stadien untersucht. Ein kalibriertes numerisches Modell wurde konstruiert, welches berechenete Ergebnisse mit den tatsächlichen Versetzungen entlang des Schachtes vergleicht.

This paper deals with the development of the cut-and-fill mining method at the Broken Hill orebody of Black Mountain Mineral Development Company (Pty) Limited, at Aggeneys in the north-western Cape Province of South Africa. Lead, copper, zinc, and silver are produced. Production started in January 1976, being confined to blasthole production methods in the upper, steeply dipping areas of the orebody. This blasthole reserve is 70 per cent depleted, and pillar extraction is in progress. The balance of the production tonnage, 60 kt per month, is produced from three cut-and-fill stopes situated in the flatter-dipping areas of the orebody. The cut-and-fill mining method at Black Mountain is a result of research and planning activities that included the use of modelling, laboratory tests, mathematical analyses, in situ tests, and experience gained from other mining operations. These investigations and the resulting developed methods and designs are summarized in the paper.

The successful application of solid electrolytes in electrochemical cells for high-temperature thermodynamic studies depends to a large extent on an accurate knowledge of the P. value of the electrolyte (the oxygen partial pressure at which the ionic conductivity and n-type electronic conductivity of the electrolyte are equal). Consequently, the P. value of an electrolyte must be determined prior to its use in electrochemical cells. This paper describes the successful application of a coulometric titration technique in the quantitative assessment of the P. values of a commercially available ytria-stabilized zirconia electrolyte that has been used extensively by local investigators. The experimentally determined P. values of the electrolyte are reported and compared with P. values reported in the literature for a similar electrolyte.

Modern soil mechanics is generally considered to have begun in 1925, when Karl Terzaghi published his book Erdbaumechanik auf bodenphysikalischer Grundlage (Earthwork Mechanics based on the Physics of Soils). These theories were applied to rocks more than 20 years later and the science of rock mechanics became established. Methods of analysis and design have been introduced and applied, and have evolved over time. More recently, the rapid growth in computing power has resulted in more sophisticated analyses, and together with improved monitoring techniques, our understanding of geomechanics has grown considerably. Despite this, geotechnical failures with major consequences still do occur. This is partly due to failure to transfer and apply the knowledge that has been gained, but also there are aspects of geomechanics that are not well understood.

Austempered ductile iron (ADI) is a ductile iron which has had its matrix toughened by an austempering process. The alloy exhibits remarkable properties, which it owes to a unique microstructure comprising graphite nodules embedded in a matrix of acicular ferrite and carbon-enriched austenite. The properties include high strength combined with high toughness and ductility. Excellent wear resistance is also exhibited because, under strain, the austenite is transformed locally to martensite. Samples of ductile iron were austempered to produce grades I and IV AD!, and were tested at various strain rates. The grade IV ADI exhibited higher strengths and lower difficulties, and the strengths were found to be more dependent on strain rate. Transformation to martensite was more prevalent at the lower strain rates. A mechanism of increased flow stress and work hardening in the austenite of the matrix is proposed to explain the higher strength of the samples at high strain rates, where significantly less martensite is formed in the matrix.

Mr Chairman, members of the executive committee, the sub-committee, distinguished speakers at this opening plenary session, delegates, affiliates, ladies and gentlemen. It is with pleasure that I have been called upon today to make these opening remarks and officially welcome you al at this auspicious assembly, the Fifteenth Congress of the Council of Mining and Metallurgical Institutions. Not only am I pleased to open the proceedings at this plenary session but for me to do so at Sun City in the North-West Province makes me doubly pleased. It is my wish that al delegates and their companions will enjoy the activities that are planned throughout the Congress and leave here with minds refreshed and stimulated by the technical sessions and memories enriched by being in such a unique and truly delightful setting as exists here at Sun City. The mix of delegates present reflects CMMI activities in many countries throughout the world-Australia, Japan, China, United Kingdom and South Africa among others. When it comes to mining and related activities, South Africa has a place at the top, a dominant role in platinum, gold, chromium, vanadium, dimension stone, coal and so forth, and here in the North-West Province we can proudly declare that some 25 per cent of the revenue from minerals in South Africa, namely R47 billion come from this area. Furthermore, we lead in the production of platinum group metals with 94 per cent of South Africa's total sales and thus hold first place in the world, 46 per cent of dimension stone sales, 32 per cent of chromate and 25 per cent of gold sales.

The excursions - Symposium on Ancient Mining and Metallurgy in Southern Africa by BERT WOODHOUSE Excursions add much to any symposium. They enable the participants to see something of the subject matter, and provide an opportunity for informal discussion and for the creation or renewal of friendships. In this respect the Ancient Mining Symposium was well provided for. There were two excursions and both were repeated to cope with the large number of participants.

CONTRIBUTION BYP.J.D.LLOYD The thought-provoking paper by Monro deserves serious consideration. If he is correct, the practice of selling gold forward should cease forthwith. However, similar arguments may well be advanced against the selling forward of many other commodities, and this runs counter to the success of futures markets worldwide. If, indeed, the practice were basically flawed, then such markets should long since have failed.

SYNOPSIS The paper describes each of the stages in a carbon-in-pulp (CIP) or carbon-in-leach (CIL) plant, and details the steps that can be taken to achieve effective carbon management by referring to practices at the Daggafontein CIP plant. This approach was adopted because of the difficulty in summarizing current carbon management in the many varying operations in South Africa, Daggafontein being chosen as a high-tonnage dedicated well-run plant of recent design. Because of the major role played by the consumption of carbon in the operating costs of CIP and CIL plants, an attempt is made to develop a series of indexes based on quality parameters and price that can be used as a guide In the selection of carbon.

The possibility that type 430 stainless steel can become sensitized during annealing after hot-rolling was studied by simulated cycles of continuous-annealing heat treatments, and by calculation of the carbon solubility. It was found that the lower-carbon steel could be sensitized at lower annealing temperatures than the higher-carbon steel, which is in line with plant experience. The difference in sensitization behaviour is ascribed to the lower rate of recovery of the lower-carbon steel during cooling, since recovery is sensitive to the grain size. At practical heat-treatment temperatures, austenite formation does not play a role.
