The coal-based power generation industry faces increased pressure from all sectors to improve its environmental performance. This is due to increased awareness of and concerns regarding greenhouse-and acid-gas emissions, toxic metal releases (to both air and water) and water availability. A methodology to assess this industry?s environmental performance is needed. Such a methodology should assess all environmental impacts accurately, recognizing the irspatial and temporal dependence, and taking into account the social acceptability of technologies employed. Here, we develop a methodology to determine the environ-mental impact associated with solid wastes generated by this industry, and apply this to the specific case of ash management. More specifically, the case study compares the environmental footprint of an ash deposit for a number of operational water management scenarios. The methodology considers leachate generation processes from ash impoundments to obtain a time-dependent concentration profile of mobile constituents at the interface between the ash impoundment and the surrounding environment. This leachate prediction modelling is subsequently linked to plume dispersion modelling tools to determine the fate and transport of leached components, predominantly salts, into groundwater. Together, these provide a measure of the extent to which a land mass is affected by leachate migration from the deposit. To determine the exact boundary between regions of acceptable and unacceptable risk to the environment, we use Ecological Risk Assessment concepts. In this way it is possible to obtain a time dependent affected land footprint which could be used as an indicator of the environmental impact of solid waste management practices. This information can be included in a set of environmental criteria which form the basis of an overall environ-mental impact assessment, using tools such as Life Cycle Assessment (LCA). The value of LCA is that its structure is consistent with accepted models of environmental decision making, where different approaches to valuation in impact assessment assist in prioritizing impacts on the basis of their perceived significance. The proposed ?affected land footprint? metric represents a significant improvement over current LCA impact indicators for solid waste management practices. Paper written on project work carried out in partial fulfilment of B Eng (Chem) degree Operational factors influencing the electrostatic separation of mineral sands were investigated in a laboratory separator. Measurements were collected online by means of an optical sensor using diffused reflectance spectroscopy to determine the mineralogical composition. The results have shown that the roll speed and potential were the dominant operating variables, collectively explaining more than 83% and 68% of the product grade and yield, respectively. In contrast, the feed rate, temperature and position of the plate did not affect separation. The effect of the ambient relative humidity, ranging from 10% to 45%, could not be assessed conclusively and at best appeared to have a weakly beneficial effect on the product grade. A physical modelling study has been carried out to simulate the slag-metal dispersion induced by a high-strength bottom gas injection. Water and kerosene were utilized to simulate metal and slag respectively. A water model of CLU (Creusot-Loire Uddeholm) vessel was used with three different nozzle orientations, namely, off-centre, triangular off-centre and centre. The gas flow rates changed from 0.00599m3/sec to 0.01081m3/sec. Height of heavy and light phases was kept fixed at 0.23 m and 0.02 m respectively. The dispersed phase holdup was determined at various axial and radial distances, gas flow rates, and tuyere configurations. The observations revealed that at a fixed gas injection rate, as the vertical distance increased in the centerline, straight off-centre orientation resulted in greater dispersed phase hold up values than those of the centre configuration and the triangular off-centre orientation. The dispersed phase holdup was found to increase with gas injection rate and decreased with axial distance. The variation of the dispersed phase hold up with the dimensionless axial distance and the gas injection rate was correlated by using the Modified Froude Number. The experimental values of the dispersed phase holdup were found to be in good agreement with the correlated values obtained from the modelling equations. The findings of the present study may be utilized in the ferroalloy refining vessels in terms of designing tuyere locations for optimum processing conditions.

In the past ten to fifteen years, many organizations have applied business process re-engineering (BPR) to significantly improve their business competitiveness or stave off closures. The mining industry in Southern Africa is no exception and documented examples can be drawn from South Africa. Although the concept is superficially simple, its application has been marked by a high failure rate of about 70 per cent because it has been generally misunderstood. Shabanie mine, a chrysotile asbestos fibre producer in Zimbabwe took cognisance of this fact by cautiously embarking on a modular BPR programme in October of 2002. A year was used as a complete cycle or module for re-evaluation of the programme. Shabanie mine adopted BPR as part of management efforts to remain competitive amid serious threats to operational viability. These threats included hyper-inflation driven rising production costs, a declining world asbestos market and a possibility that Russia could take over the shrinking world asbestos market by dumping low-priced asbestos fibre. The only competitive advantage that the mine had was the high quality of its long-fibre chrysotile asbestos. The major BPR thrust was therefore to redesign processes for improved productivity and ultimately achieve a lower cost per ton of final asbestos fibre product. In addition, corporate culture change and cost-saving were also factored into the programme. This paper discusses the implementation experience of the BPR programme at the mine. The main BPR beneficial highlights are improved productivity, sizeable cost-savings, positive corporate culture change and identification of secondary projects. One of the lessons learnt from this programme is that mining companies will have to deal with the HIV/AIDS pandemic if they are to sustain high levels of productivity into the future.

The possible closure and subsequent flooding of South Deep Gold Mine?s (SD) neighbouring Randfontein Estates Limited No. 4 Shaft (REL 4) necessitated the construction of five concrete plugs in the connecting tunnels to prevent the ingress of groundwater into REL4 from flooding SD. This paper describes the proposed controlled flooding of REL 4, the planned in-service monitoring of the five plugs and the water barrier between REL 4 and South Deep Mine, and the long-term maintenance of the plugs and rock mass in the immediate vicinity of the plugs.

This article outlines the results of a computer simulation reproducing the transport of a mixture of air and methane following the outburst on 25 November, 2005 in transport gallery D-6, bed 409/4, at the ?Zofiówka? hard coal mine. Based on a mathematical model, numerical method and boundary conditions from the disturbance caused by the outburst, the Ventgraph system of computer simulation programs was adopted for the study. We performed a computer simulation of the influence exerted by the outburst on the propagation of the air and methane mixture, and compared the results of this simulation with those of the actual event as registered by sensors of the mine monitoring system. A validation of the model allowed us to present temporal changes in the concentration of methane and air along flow routes. The reaction between carbon and slags is of significant importance in direct smelting of iron ores, EAF slag foaming and copper slag cleaning processes. This reaction is known to occur via gaseous intermediates and it is important to have fundamental data to understand the relative importance of each reaction step. In this study, the rate of CO2dissociation on different slag surfaces is measured using an isotope exchange technique. It was found that increasing iron oxide content up to 30 wt per cent does not have a significant effect on the rate constant while increasing from this limit, increases the rate constant dramatically. Activation energy of CO2dissociation on slags of unit basicity and different iron oxide contents is in the range of 180±40 kJ/mol. It is found that rate constant dependence on oxygen potential in the slag phase is increasing with iron oxide concentration. In the case of copper making slags, the influence of copper oxide is found to increase the magnitude of apparent rate constant, while decreasing the activation energy considerably. X-ray Computed Tomography (CT) is a nondestructive imaging technique, and its efficiency is widely recognized. In the present paper, X-ray CT is successfully applied for the visualization of water permeation process in rock. A new experimental technique using a tracer, which mainly consists of Potassium Iodide (KI), is proposed, together with the analysis method of the velocity field. The permeation process and the velocity field in rock are concretely visualized and analyzed by considering the conservation of mass of the tracers. La tomographie calculée aux rayons X est une technique de la prise d'images non-destructive et son efficacité est largement reconnue. Dans le présent exposé, la tomographie calculée aux rayons X Radio est appliquée avec succès à la visualisation du procédé de perméation de l'eau dans la roche. Une nouvelle technique expérimentale, se servant d'un identificateur principalement constitué d'iodure de potassium (KI), est proposée avec la méthode de l'analyse du champ des vitesse. Le procédé de perméation et le champ des vitesse dans la roche sont visualisés concrètement et analysés en considérant la conservation de masse des identificateurs. Röntgen-Computer-Tomografie (CT) ist eine nicht-destruktive Bildverarbeitungstechnik, deren Effizienz weit anerkannt ist. In der vorliegenden Arbeit wird Röntgen-CT erfolgreich für die visuelle Darstellung des Wasser-Durchdringungsvorgangs im Fels eingesetzt. Eine neue experimentelle Technit mit einem Tracer, der hauptsächlich aus Kaliumiodid (KI) besteht, wird vorgeschlagen, zusammen mit der Analysemethode des Geschwindigkeitsfelds. Der Durchdringungsprozess und das Geschwindigkeitsfeld im Fels werden konkret visualisiert und analysiert, wobei die Bewahrung der Masse des Tracers berücksichtigt wird.

Most of the compounds present in slag are surface active. This gives rise to foaminess of slag. The foam life and foaming index are normally determined by the draining rate of slag through the plateau border, so the foaming index is directly proportional to slag viscosity and inversely proportional to slag density and bubble diameter. When a small amount of a strong surface active compound like P2O5or Cr2O3is present in slag, however, the foam life increases significantly and the above relationship is not obeyed. The strong surface active compounds reduce the draining rate from the film between the adjacent bubbles so the film draining controls the life of the foam. The thickness of the film, Marangoni force, viscosity of the slag, and diffusion of surface active compounds determine the film draining rate. The interplay of these factors leads to very low or high film draining rates and affects the film and foam stability significantly. Keywords: slag, foam, foaming index, film draining

Beneficiation studies were conducted on a Portuguese feldspar ore, in order to obtain final products capable of being used in the ceramic industry. A simple scrubbing operation is enough to break the lumps in the feed. The ore deposit contains ca 35 x 106tonnesfrom which, by screening, three main products could be obtained. This paper focuses on the beneficiation of the 500/74 µm fraction, which constitutes about 27% of the ore, assaying 9.42% Al2O3,equivalent to approximately ca 46% feldspar, with a mean iron content of 0.29% iron oxides. Magnetic separation and froth flotation testwork was carried out, in order to decrease the iron contamination and increase the feldspar content. Magnetic separation alone decreased the iron content of the feed to values between 0.04 and 0.08% iron oxides with an average yield greater than 90%. Flotation with HF, provided a feldspar recovery of 45?46% with a concentrate assaying 17.6% Al2O3. The use of H2SO4, gave a recovery of 35?36% of feldspar concentrate, assaying 16.1% Al2O3. However, economic and environmental advantages of using sulphuric acid may compensate for the lower mass recovery. The iron content of0.12% iron oxides in these concentrates, could be reduced to 0.04?0.05%, by further magnetic separation.

Uranium is a naturally occurring radioactive material in the earth?s crust. Geological processes have resulted in concentration of uranium into ore mined for its gold content in South Africa. This uranium is present in the form of discrete particles of uranium minerals, generally oxides, which are normally insoluble. Chemical and physical processes during gold mining and extraction, particularly when carried out in conjunction with uranium extraction and sulphuric acid manufacture, act on the uranium minerals and the radioactive decay products of uranium. This may result insignificant accumulations of radioactive materials in certain parts of the process. There are a number of naturally occurring radioactive materials in the earth?s crust, such as Uranium-235, Thorium-232, andPotassium-40. This paper focuses on Uranium-238, together with its decay products, and how they affect the gold mines. Water plays a significant role in the redistribution of radionuclides, both as a physical transport medium, and as a solvent in which chemical reactions take place.

Testwork was done with two different adsorbents, Dowex-Minix gold-selective resin and activated carbon, to detemine their relative performances with regard to gold recovery from clarified low-grade solution employing a fixed-bed operation. The mill discharge from the milling-in-cyanide operation at a Witwatersrand gold mine was used as feed to the adsorption columns. A small amount of gold was leached during the milling process, so that this solution simulates, to a certain extent, a low-grade solution representative of a heap-leach operation. A speciation of the feed solution was done to establish which metal complexes were present in the milling-in-cyanide solution. This information was necessary to interpret metal loadings on the resin, as base metal cyanide species and their respective charges have an effect on the final gold loading capacity of the resin. Equilibrium isotherms were established for both adsorbents to estimate the rate of adsorbent flow anticipated for this specific feed solution. Breakthrough profiles were obtained at two different superficial linear velocities for each adsorbent. Mass transfer zone heights determined from the test work and the elution/regeneration time requirements were used to size a 150 m3/h full-scale plant for both adsorbents. A counter current configuration of adsorption columns, using three columns, should be suitable to recover gold effectively and to produce an effluent with a gold concentration below 0.01 mg/l. Based on the results obtained from the breakthrough tests, a preliminary techno-economic comparison was done between the resin-in-solution and carbon-in-solution options for the recovery of gold from low-grade solutions. This study indicated that the capital expenditure for a carbon-in-solution plant would be about 33 percent higher than that of a resin-in-solution plant. The operating expenditure for a resin-in-solution plant is expected to be only 60per cent of that for a carbon-in-solution plant. Keywords: resin-in-solution, carbon-in-solution, heap leach.

Globalization creates investment opportunities for enterprises around the world. Attracting foreign investment has been a key challenge for economic growth in developing countries. Corruption, political instability, armed conflict, and other internal problems affect foreign direct investment (FDI) inflows negatively. A framework of criteria provides a basis for comparing non-commercial risk (NCR) among twenty-three mineral economies. Countries competing for foreign direct investment inflows are ranked from least to most risky. This study compares Inward FDI Performance Index (IND) with NCR ratings in developing countries and shows that risk is increasingly mitigated by means of appropriately structured insurance. Given the option for countries with similar mineral potential, investors will generally invest in the country that offers lower non-commercial risk. The current state of the South African mining industry is briefly reviewed from the point of view of an engineer not schooled in the finer details of predictive economics. Based on the assumption that current world exploration targets are indicative of which commodities the world will want in the future, it is concluded that the South African mining industry will continue to be viable and growing well into the future. South Africa holds the minerals the world wants and needs, and as long as the world has people, the demand for those, including gold, will continue to grow. There still is a growing demand for vanity commodities' and even the demand for platinum as a jewellery material displays significant growth. Mine safety still needs to improve, but significant improvement has already been made although the industry is not always acknowledged for the effort in this field. The safety target set for 2013 is within reach but will require sustained effort. The physical mining conditions for the main revenue earners, coal, platinum, and gold, will change substantially in the near future. Research in mining has declined alarmingly and it is urgently necessary for that to be revitalized to generate the knowledge that will be required. In order to streamline the transfer of knowledge to the mining engineers of the future, research needs to be conducted with the full involvement of the universities. It will also be necessary for the universities to continually review curricula to incorporate the latest knowledge and to embark on a campaign of knowledge transfer to the older generation of mining engineers. The mining industry is well supported by the universities, who have done their duty with regard to societal transformation, and the universities are in turn supported by the industry through vehicles like the METE Industry is also strongly supported by a number of professional and vocational societies. The SAIMM will continue to play its vital role as the meeting point of the mining technical sciences, and will continue to disseminate knowledge via the journal, schools, and conferences. In the future, it will review its modus operandi to support the needs of growing membership in the remote branches. It will enter the research arena in an appropriate manner and give effect to the developing integration of mining and society. The most important threat to the future of the mining industry is the recurrent mention of nationalization. While interaction between the mining industry and political and economic development of South Africa has always been characteristic, the current debate is emotional more than rational, and engineers are not well equipped to participate. This matter needs to be finalized before it becomes a popular force that politicians cannot control.

The slag produced in the Peirce Smith converters at the Ilo smelter of Southern Peru Copper Corporation has shown a wide range of magnetite content, which introduces an additional problem in the smelting units due to materials? recirculation. However, the operation data analysis and the application of thermodynamic concepts have made it possible to produce slag with magnetite content between 18 and 20%. The results have suggested that matte grade enhances magnetite formation while silica controls its precipitation, and they are also influenced by the increasing temperature of the slag. Thus, in order to obtain the required magnetite content in the slag, matte grade is gradually enriched in equilibrium with slag containing from 25 to 32% silica.

Oriel Resources has with the support of SRK (Cardiff) and DRA and Mintek (South Africa) carried our a Definitive Feasibility Study (DFS) to recover high grade chrome ore from its Voskhod deposit very close to Chromtau that is near to Aktobe in Kazakhstan. Voskhod is a large podiform ore body that contains nearly 20million tons of chromite grading about 48% Cr2O3 and with a Cr/Fe ratio of over 3/1. Selected bore hole core samples were obtained from the confirmation drilling programme during the DFS phase of the project in 2005 for pilot plant test work to design the mineral beneficiation plant. The chrome ore is characterised by four main types, namely high grade lumpy and chip sized ore, high-grade fine ore, lower grade (subordinate) lumpy ore and lower grade fine ore. Gravity separation tests carried out by Mintek showed that the large density difference between the high grade (at over 3.7t/m3) and lower grade ore (at less than 2.97t/m3 ) should ensure very good separation in the DMS drum and DMS cyclone stages resulting in high recoveries of Cr2O3 - rich chromite ore products. Very high chrome ore grades of up to 64% Cr2O3 and Cr/Fe ratios of 4 to 1 were obtained at an 80% mass yield from selected samples of lumpy and chip ore size fractions. The overall predicted recovery from the design work on the mine and plant is expected to be closer to about 70% of the ROM (Run of Mine) feed. DRA has completed the design of the mineral processing plant to recover about 900 kt/a of chrome ore from the 1.3 Mt/a of ROM feed. The plant has been sized to handle up to 1.5 Mt/a and will also be able to address the variability in ore feed as different regions in the deposit are mined. The lumpy high-grade product and the chips size fraction is expected to grade around 48% Cr2O3 and the fine concentrate between 56 and 58%Cr2O3 The ratio of products is expected to be about 70, 15 and 15 percent respectively but will vary to some extent during the expected 20 year life of the mining operation based on including the associated adjacent Karaagash deposit together with the Voskhod deposit. The prediction of the product split from the processing plant depends on many factors such as the geology, mineralogy, mining, handling and metallurgical processing. An overall process flow model has been developed that covers the ROM ore, the various types of chrome ore feed to the mineral beneficiation plant, the projected products and the subsequent smelting of the chromite ores to produce High Carbon Ferrochromium. The model allows the optimisation of the quality of the chrome ore in terms of Cr2O3 content, Cr/Fe ratio and recovery to be studied. This information can also be evaluated in terms of the economic requirements for smelting High Carbon Ferrochromium (HCFeCr) at a given location. Oriel is planning to supply chrome ore to Ferrochrome plants mostly in China and Russia. The use of the model will assist to maximise the value of the Voskhod project to its owners and also assist the users of the chrome ore in selecting the appropriate supply quality to meet their needs for a given smelter operation. The smelting of high grade Voskhod ore requires a limited addition of about 5 to 7% quartz to flux the MgO and Al2O3 and about 25% coke as a reducing agent to produce an alloy containing from about 65 to 74%chromium depending on the Cr/Fe ratio.

A variety of carbonaceous reducing materials are being used for the production of ferroalloys. Reductant materials include not just carbons such as coke, coal, char but also bio-carbons in form of charcoal produced from different types of wood. This paper discusses critical properties and reactions of carbonaceous materials and their significance in dictating reductant performance. Main considerations include among others, gasification of reductant, dissolution of carbon into molten metal, and direct reduction of slag by solid carbon. These are discussed in relation to material properties such as structural order, mineral matter content, composition, physical characteristics etc. A brief review of both conventional and novel approaches towards characterisation of carbonaceous materials has been included. Due to complexity and heterogeneity of carbonaceous reducing materials and a wide range of process requirements, the selection of the most appropriate reducing agent will depend on a number of considerations such as the availability of raw material and associated costs, product and process requirements and environmental aspects of waste gas emissions.

A21st Century supervisor is one who ensures that workers are constantly supported so that they can maximize safety and productivity. A 21st Century manager is one who constantly searches for ways to maximize returns for the various stakeholders. Given the well-known constraints in narrow reef mining, all of the above is meaningless unless a mining method is found which provides conditions which support the 21st Century initiatives. [ ] The identified mining method is a continuous non-explosive stope breaking system using rocksplitter technology. Rocksplitting is defined as: The fragmentation of rock through high energy pulse wave transmission in a fluid-filled hole or hydro fracturing. Shotholes are effectively filled with a water-based geland 30 grams of explosive after which the hole is closed off with a ?rocksplitting gun?.
