The Faculty of Engineering at the University of New South Wales (UNSW) offers a core first-year engineering design and innovation course, ENGG1000, undertaken during the first and second semesters. This course is highly regarded in the sense that it provides an introduction to many concepts and activities that students will experience over the four-year minimum for which they are undergraduates at UNSW. Approximately 1400 students enrol in the semester 1 course across the Faculty, typically 80 of which undertake the Mining Engineering stream. Students in teams of between six and eight design and construct a physical model to represent an aspect of their chosen discipline. For example, in 2013 the mining engineers designed and built a model dragline. This paper concentrates a major aspect of the course ? the involvement of team members in group activities and the development of the associated skills of peer assessment and peer review as the course progresses over a period of 12 weeks. The term ?peer assessment? in this paper refers to the requirement for students to assess the design components of their peers. This course has a structured requirement in terms of how a successful design is a result of a sound design process rather than a ?try and see? approach. Each student must describe in detail the process they undertook to achieve their final design ? hence the approach is independent of the discipline and/or project selected. Peer review is a process whereby students review the contribution of their team members to the overall design. This activity encourages team involvement and interaction. The final assessment mark can be moderated by the outcome of this peer review, although it is run twice during the semester. The first ?run? is for feedback only during week six and hence no moderation is undertaken. It was found through consultation with students and from questionnaires that both processes are well accepted and highly regarded by students, as they give them a degree of ownership of the assessment process. In addition, the processes provide rapid and relevant feedback on the progress of individual students. Peer review and peer assessment are also considered to be very valuable tools for use in courses in succeeding years. For instance, many of the courses in mining engineering rely heavily on group assessment tasks.

Underground excavations exhibit different hangingwall conditions in response to varying geotechnical and mining situations. These differences need to be quantified so as to accurately determine the effectiveness of the mining and/or support strategies. A useful tool for the quantification of these differences is hangingwall profiling. Two methods of hangingwall profile measurement are described?termed irregular and periodic methods. Several data analysis techniques are reviewed for these methods and the suitable ones are discussed in detail. For irregular data the suitable techniques are the determination of the length, the average of the profile and the average absolute deviation from the mean of the profile. All of these techniques as well as determination of the moving average of the height and examination of the spectral image of the profile can be successfully applied to regular data. The effect of preconditioning on the hangingwall is discussed as an example and it is quantitatively shown that it results in improvements of conditions. The techniques described allow the engineer to quantitatively identify the appropriate support type or mining strategy and thus represent a valuable decision-making tool. It is suggested that these techniques should be employed on a routine basis by the rock engineers on the mines as part of their geotechnical classification, as well as support manufacturers to quantify the effectiveness of various support types.

The paper takes the reader into the depths of a modern ultra-deep South African gold mine and gives a perspective on the vertical and horizontal extent of the tunnel networks in such a mine. Depending on the mine design layout employed, tunnels once excavated are subjected to various levels of stress change over their life time, and the support requirements are explained. It is suggested that shotcreting is the only viable ultra-deep level support medium, and after looking at the latest developments, the logistical problems are put forward. In an effort to overcome most of these problems, the South African ultra-deep mining industry embarked on a collaborative research programme in 1998. The importance of tunnelling and in particular tunnel support as a critical technology for future successful ultra-deep level mining is stressed. While not yet fully ?on top of? these problems and challenges, our industry is now fully addressing them and we expect to make significant progress during the next 4 to 5 years.

To study the preparation process of an earthquake, we should get closer to the hypocentre. In co-operation with ISS International, we had an experimental field (~200 m x~200 m) without dykes and faults in a South African deep gold mine. We have monitored more than 20,000 seismic events (M<2) with borehole tri-axial accelerometers. We used a data acquisition system with 15 kHz sampling and 120-dB dynamic range. In a remnant area at a distance of 100?200 m, an earthquake sequence associated with an M~2 event occurred. Significant changes in seismic parameters such as stress drop, b-value, energy index were observed associated with the sequence. We installed Ishii?s borehole strain meters and could monitor as large a strain change as 10-4associated with mining. However, sampling was only 4 times per hour and 12 bit A/D. A distance from the M2 sequence was ~100 m, being not close enough. Therefore, we found another field with several crosscut tunnels excavated across a fault where an M=2-3 event is expected. We installed the strain meter within several metres of the fault to monitor both shear and normal strains on the fault. The strains are continuously digitized with a 24-bit 25-Hz A/D conversion. The Earth Tide (10-8)is clearly detected. Seismicity induced by longwall mining can be compared to earthquake swarm induced by fluid intrusion to vertical dykes. We also found a decrease in energy index in the source area of M>5events a few days before the major events. Escalating energy and electricity costs have become one of the largest drivers of expenditure in mining operations. Over the last eight years, energy costs have tripled when expressed as a percentage of total expenses in South African mines. In an effort to manage and reduce electricity costs, energy management strategies can be developed, inefficient operating units replaced, and the operation of energy-consuming components of ventilation systems optimized. Power consumption on mines is controlled mainly by three strategies, namely load clipping, by which energy use is reduced for certain parts of the day; load shifting, by which energy use is shifted to other parts of the day; and energy efficiency, by which energy use is reduced permanently. In this paper several projects that were implemented using the first two strategies of load clipping and load shifting are investigated. The actual and potential savings that can be achieved by implementing such energysaving interventions are presented. To reduce the operating costs of ventilating and cooling underground mines permanently, system optimization studies must be completed. Methods that can be used to reduce energy usage by optimizing cooling and ventilation systems are described, and network simulation models that accurately reflect the current and planned ventilation conditions are discussed. These models are then used to examine various options for improving the overall ventilation and cooling strategy. Different optimization scenarios can be simulated, and this assists the design engineer in obtaining the most energy-efficient system that will satisfy design workplace conditions. The final outcome is a reduction in operating costs, which can result in better operating margins and an extension of the life of mine.

This article describes and evaluates the establishment of Kuyasa Mining including the search for a suitable deposit, the ongoing lack of finance, and market constraints. Despite the dramatic initial growth and success of their Ikhwezi Colliery near Delmas, Mpumalanga, Kuyasa?s experiences offer some sobering arguments for significant changes to mineral rights ownership, the attitude of financial institutions and government policy if South Africa is to have a dynamic and successful junior and small-scale mining sector.

A mathematical model for bioleaching at the agglomerate scale is developed. The agglomerate is defined as a unit volume of a heap which contains a solid phase (a size distribution of ore particles), a liquid phase (stagnant and flowing leaching solution) and a gas phase (flowing air and air pockets). Leaching at the level of an ore particle is modelled using a diffusion-reaction equation, and oxidation by attached and detached microbes is treated separately. With the aid of the mathematical model, the effect of particle size distribution on the bioleaching of an ore containing a mixture of chalcocite and pyrite, and a culture of iron oxidizers, is investigated.

Selective leaching of phases in charge chrome is used in a variety of industrial processes for the production of chromium chemicals. A mineralogical study was made of a range of local charge chrome samples, at various stages of leaching in sulphuric acid (20g/l at 90°C), using mainly a scanning electron microscope (SEM) together with an energy-dispersive spectroscopy analyzer (EDS), and X-ray diffraction techniques. It was found that the leaching behaviour of the different types of charge chrome depends largely on the nature of the secondary phases, which in turn depends upon whether the silicon content is above or below 4 per cent by mass. The leaching behaviour of high-chromium ferrite is anomalous, and it is postulated that the process is analogous to the corrosion of brass by dezincification. As part of a comprehensive risk analysis which was carried out into the effectiveness of the water barrier between South Deep and Randfontein Estate mines, the potential threat posed by large seismic events was assessed. The study covered several aspects. Firstly, an estimate of the maximum credible earthquake was obtained from a probabilistic analysis of the regional seismicity of the previous 25 years. Allowance was made for ?reservoir-induced? effects by increasing the estimate of the size of the maximum credible earthquake from ML= 5.1 to ML= 5.5. Based on available knowledge of the geological structure, the possibility of such an event occurring in the vicinity of the barrier pillar was estimated. The possibility of substantial damage to the barrier rock mass, resulting as a consequence of a large event, was assessed. The likely damage to the concrete control plugs installed in five tunnels that penetrated the barrier, which might result from a ?near-miss? by the largest possible seismic event or from a ?direct hit? by a smaller event, was also considered. It was concluded that there was a negligibly small possibility that the maximum credible earthquake could occur close enough to the barrier, and in such a manner, as to cause any damage to it or to the plugs in the tunnels passing through it. The possibility of serious plug damage occurring as a result of a ?direct hit? by as maller event was slightly greater, but still sufficiently remote as to be of no practical concern at all.

The possible closure and subsequent flooding of South Deep Gold Mine?s neighbouring Randfontein Estates Limited No. 4 Shaft (REL 4) necessitated the construction of five concrete plugs in the connecting tunnels to prevent the ingress of groundwater into REL4 from flooding South Deep mine. Several technical investigations had been carried out before and during construction of the plugs in order to reduce the probability of groundwater flow through the boundary pillar between the two mines or through the rock mass immediately around the plugs. This paper describes the geological, hydrogeological and stability investigations carried out to evaluate the structural competence of the boundary pillar.

This paper traces the co-operative initiative undertaken by South Africa?s gold mining companies through the Chamber of Mines Research Organization (COMRO) in development of hydraulic technologies. After a brief description of the structure of these technologies? development under COMRO?s stewardship, the paper turns to an overview of the structure of innovation within which these hydraulic technologies were developed. A central focus of this paper is systematic review on whether similar technologies are likely to emerge in the present system of innovation and the role played by innovation policy.

Coal mining using longwall methods of mining can lead to intense disturbances of undermined roof strata. The disturbances may extend beyond the extraction area and the resulted rock mass deformations will appear differentiated. In the case of stiff and undermined roof strata, the energy stored in these rock masses may be frequently dissipated in the form of high-energy seismic tremors. Such events can occur if these strata should fail or „free themselves” either from the constrainment of rock environment or from adjacent strata. It has also been found that the amount of the stored energy closely depends on the size and/or slenderness of these strata. Thus, it would be possible to apply specific preventive measures to reduce the energy of mining – induced seismic tremors. The methods are based on artificial disintegration of the structure of energy – storing strata. One of the most efficient methods is a method of directional hydraulic fracturing, which is regarded as an alternative solution from the traditional blasting and hydraulic methods.

A prediction model, developed by Central Mining Research Institute (India) for evaluation of fire risk rating of underground coal mine panels in bord and pillar working in respect of their proneness to spontaneous heating, is presented in this paper. The concept used in this model is innovative and user friendly. This model may be applied to a panel where extraction is carried out using any of the techniques: i) depillaring with formation of small pillars as final operation, ii) extraction by broadening of galleries, iii) depillaring with hydraulic sand stowing, and iv) depillaring with caving. Here, major fire risk parameters are short-listed and divided into three broad groups in accordance with the nature of their contribution to the spontaneous heating of a mine panel. The paper describes the procedure for estimating the fire risk rating of individual groups using separate objective type models developed for this purpose. Then it evaluates the overall fire risk rating of the panel by combining the fire risk ratings of all the three broad groups. The model is tested with the field data collected from different collieries spreading across the country and with the laboratory data for critical assessment of fitness. The influence of microwave treatment on copper flotation has been investigated. Comparative batch flotation tests carried out on ore treated at 5?12 kW for 0.1?0.5 s showed that improvements in copper recovery of between 6?15 % could be achieved compared with untreated ore. Both recovery and cumulative grade increased with increasing treatment time and power. A preliminary economic analysis showed that microwave treatment will be economically viable if recoveries similar to those determined on laboratory scale can be achieved on a plant. ABSTRACT: The significant effect of fracture surface morphology on the mechanical behaviour of rock masses is well known and has been studied by many people. For linear profiles taken from fracture surfaces, short- and long-period variation has traditionally been described using the descriptors ‘roughness’ and ‘waviness’, with Fourier series analysis being perhaps the most commonly used technique to distinguish between the two attributes. However, the mathematical procedure is involved and the assumptions that have to be made may not be appropriate for rock fracture surfaces. In this paper, an alternative method is presented that enables us to distinguish between roughness and waviness of a linear profile by performing only one straightforward analysis. In our technique, surface morphology is studied in terms of the distribution of unit normal vectors to the profile. The statistical analysis of the distribution is performed using Riemannian, rather than the customary Euclidean, geometry, and from this the 1D Riemannian dispersion parameter (DR1) is obtained, which quantifies the geometry of the profile. The method is applied at different scales to both synthetic sinusoidal profiles and real rock profiles. The results show how periodic behaviour of the profile is revealed at scales where DR1 is substantially equal to zero. RESUME: L’influence significative de la morphologie des épontes sur le comportement mécanique des massifs rocheux est bien connue et a fait l’objet de nombreuses études. Pour les profils lineraires, les variations de courtes et longues périodes sont traditionnellement décrites par les indicateurs “rugosité” et “ondulation” qui sont le plus couramment distingués à l’aide d’une analyse en series de Fourrier. Cependant, la méthode de calcul utilisée et les hypothèses faites ne sont pas appropriées dans le cas des épontes rocheuses. Cet article présente une méthode alternative qui permet de distinguer la rugosité de l’ondulation d’un profil en réalisant une seule analyse directe. Avec notre technique, la morphologie de l’éponte est étudiée comme une distribution spatiale de vecteurs normaux au profil. L’analyse de cette distribution est réalisée à l’aide de la géométrie Riemannienne plutôt que la géométrie classique Euclidienne et permet d’identifier la dispersion Riemanienne en 1D (DR1) qui quantifie la géométrie du profil. Cette méthode est appliquée à différentes échelles sur des profils artificiels sinusoïdaux et des épontes naturelles. Les résultats montrent que le comportement périodique du profil est révélé à des échelles où DR1 est essentiellement égal à zéro. ZUSAMMENFASSUNG: Der signifikante Effekt von Bruchoberflaechen Morphologien auf das mechanische Verhalten von Gesteinsmassen ist gut bekannt und von vielen Bearbeitern untersucht worden. Traditionel lineare Profile von Bruchflaechen sind mit kurz und lang periodischen Variationen, die auch als “Rauhigkeit” und “Welligkeit” bezeichnet worden sind, beschrieben worden. Hierbei ist wohl die Fourier Serien Analyse das wichtigste Hilfsmittel zur Unterscheidung der beiden Attribute gewesen. Hierfuer wird jedoch ein mathematisches Prozedere verlangt und Vorraussetzungen gemacht, die vielleicht nicht fuer Gesteinsbruchflaechen zutreffend sind. In dieser Publikation wird eine andere Methode vorgestellt, die uns mit Hilfe nur einer einfachen Analyse erlaubt zwischen “Rauigkeit” und “Welligkeit” bei einem linearen Profil zu unterscheiden. In unserer Methode wird die Gesteinsoberflaeche unter zu Hilfenahme der Verteilung von Einheitsnormalvektoren beschrieben. Die statistische Analyse der raeumlichenVerteilung dieser Vektoren wird mit Hilfe der Riemannschen, anstatt der ueblicherweise benutzten Euklidischen, Geometrie durchgefuehrt. Von ihr wird der Riemannsche Dispersions Parameter (DR1) abgeleitet, der die Geometrie des Profils quantifiziert. Diese Methode ist bei verschiedenen Masstaeben sowohl auf rein harmonische (sinusoidale), syntetische Profile als auch auf Gesteinsprofile angewendet worden. Die Ergebnisse zeigen, dass bei Masstaeben bei denen DR1 nahe Null ist periodische Characteristika der Profile hervortreten.

In this paper, the computer program ‘SHAFT’ developed for estimation of support requirements for circular mine shafts is introduced. Theory of support design is based on the analytical solutions of circular excavations under non-hydrostatic loading (Detourney and St. John1), and Lame’s thick-wall cylinder theory (Timoshenko6). For rock mass strength property determination Hoek-Brown failure criterion (Hoek et al.2) is used. Mainly two types of support, concrete and steel are taken into consideration as a support member. Program is written in Quick Basic language. Input parameters of the program are shaft radius, number of zones having the same properties along the shaft depth, and depth, unit weight, horizontal to vertical stress ratio, GSI, and uniaxial compressive strength of intact rock of each zone, and compressive strength and safety factor of support member. Output of the program is the graphical representation of shaft with the required support member and thickness throughout the depth of the shaft.

This paper describes two cases of corrosion that occurred in dry-process, rotary, cement-clinker kilns. In the case of the kiln with five pre-heater stages, the attack occurred primarily from sulphates that probably originated in the raw feed and fuel being used in the plant and that penetrated the refractory lining. The corrosion was similar to ash-deposit corrosion often observed in steam boilers. In the second case the plant consisted of a long dry kiln with a single pre-heater fitted to the feed-end. In this case the corrosion could be ascribed to alkali chloride penetration through the refractory-brick lining and subsequent hot corrosion of the kiln shell.

Complete stress-strain-volume change behaviour including post peak softening behaviour of the samples, are presented. Strength and deformation parameters are given. This paper describes the decision to implement and then the implementation itself, through trials, of electronic ?Smartdets? over previously used shock tubes. It concludes that Mufulira Mine has become the first mine in Zambia to convert 100% of its stoping to ?Smartdets?, because the Mine?s management was prepared to look beyond the unit cost of product and were ready to look at the broader picture of cost effectiveness and increased productivity.
