Microwave energy has been recently used in minerals processing to speed up the leaching process or to improve the liberation of targeted minerals (Al-Harahshed and Kingman, (2003); Bradshaw et al., (2001)). Applied to the roasting of sulphide minerals, microwaves allow the ?tunning? of calcine types and products quality in addition to the energy savings as opposed to the conventional roasting (Mulaba, 2006). As more than 85% of world zinc is produced through the ?roast-leach-electrowin? route, an attempt was made to optimize cost, energy and product quality for metal extraction process route. The use of microwaves was the alternative process route selected for the optimisation. Pyrite concentrate (0.17% Zn, 0.09% Cu, 35.71% Fe, 43.76% S) and sphalerite concentrate containing 43.81% Zn, 0.37% Cu, 3.86% Fe and 44.39% S were microwave roasted in a multimode cavity of 2.45 GHz with varying power levels and for different durations. The produced calcines were characterized using AAS, XRF, XRD and Mossbauer spectroscopy while the determination of residual Sulphur was used as products quality control tool to ascertain the degree of roasting achieved on the feed. The leachability of the produced calcines in HCl, HNO3, H2SO4 and HNO3 + HCl has been studied in terms of the best leaching yield, process kinetics economics and environmental aspect. With 800 W power for 30 minutes, ZnO and Fe2O3 were formed corresponding to a 70% sulfur removed from sphalerite and 80% from pyrite concentrates respectively. While the roasting of the above concentrates appeared to be a first degree processes, it was noticed that the microwave assisted roasting of sphalerite and pyrite concentrates yielded lower sample surface temperature for a shorter time (i.e.less than 30 minutes) microwave exposition. Longer time (more than 30 minutes) microwave exposure showed a linear increase in temperature in function of power level used. While optimum roasting conditions were found at 800W, 30 minutes, a 10% increase of sulfur removal was noticed while pyrite concentrate was microwave roasted. Sulfuric acid was seen to give higher leaching yield than nitric acid. Zinc dissolution was hindered by the presence of franklinite.

The bioleaching of arsenopyrite, the oxidation of arsenate and the precipitation of ferric arsenate are competing reactions, hence their rates depend on the relative concentrations of the respective species, and the activity of the bacterial culture. Bacterial arsenic resistance may be attributed to the Pst+Pit-mutation and an energy dependent efflux pump. Pst+Pit-mutations result in a reduced uptake of arsenate. This enables the bacteria to survive in solutions in which the arsenate concentration is significantly higher than the arsenite concentration. However, the excretion of arsenate requires energy. Therefore, in the absence of an energy source or during periods of reduced bacterial activity, the inhibitory effect of arsenate may manifest at concentrations to which the culture has been adapted. The chemical ferric leaching rate of pyrite and arsenopyrite decrease with a decrease in the solution redox and may be described using a modified Butler-Volmer equation. The bacterial ferrous-iron oxidation kinetics of L. ferrooxidans also depend on the redox potential, and can be described using a Michaelis-Mententype model modified to account for both temperature and pH. A model developed using the independently determined ferric leaching, and ferrous-iron oxidizing kinetics, has been shown to compare well with the experimental data for the continuous bioleaching of pyrite. Mechanization in low-stope panels situated in hard rock infers roof support by tensile bolting to allow free passage of trackless mining equipment in the production areas. This is in sharp contrast to conventional mining, where compressive roof supports?such as timber and grout packs?have traditionally been used, up to 1.5 metres from the production face. Bolting is a hazardous operation because material is dislodged from the roof during the drilling activity. Even with temporary roof support installed, small pieces of rock are dislodged by the percussive action of the drifter. Operations with the man situated directly under the drill, during the drilling activity, are hazardous. The only way to remove the hazard is to move the man away from the machine for as much as possible throughout the complete cycle Costs associated with safety cannot be quantified, but need to form part of the decision-making process. Machine selections based on purchase and running costs alone do not justify the investment cost of mechanized bolters. The equipment selection process needs to take into account the total cost of mining as well as the human safety impact and loss of production costs from having to re-bolt roofs in a production panel to prevent falls of ground. Labour costs in mechanized low-stope bolting are between one-quarter and half the labour costs of non-mechanized bolting. This paper reviews the mechanized bolting option versus handheld bolting from a mining process and cost perspective in a hard rock, low-stope room-and-pillar mining operation in the platinum and chrome industries.

Paper written on project work carried out in partial fulfilment of B. Eng (Metallurgical Engineering) degree Electrowinning is an attractive method to recover gold from the relatively concentrated aurodicyanide solutions produced by the elution of loaded carbon, provided that the plated gold can be easily removed using high pressure water sprays. In practice, difficulty with the removal of the gold is occasionally experienced and has been correlated with the presence of high concentrations of copper in the eluate. In this work, the influence of copper on the electro-plating of gold was further investigated using a laboratory electrowinning cell with a rotating disc cathode, polarization, and adhesion tests. It was found that the reduction of copper will compete with gold electrowinning at high copper tenors and that the adhesion of the precipitated gold is also increased under these conditions. The correlations between the modulus ratio and penetration rate of rotary and percussive drills were statistically investigated using the raw data obtained from the experimental works of different researchers. An inverse power law was found between the modulus ratio and the penetration rate of rotary and diamond drills. The penetration rate of rotary drills and diamond drills decrease with an increasing modulus ratio. The penetration rates of percussive drills increase with an increasing modulus ratio. There are significant linear correlations between the penetration rates of percussive drills and the modulus ratio. In one of the cases of percussive drilling, a strong correlation between the penetration rate and the modulus ratio was found for the rocks having a porosity value lower 1.23 %. It can be concluded that the modulus ratio might be a representative measure of rock drilling efficiency. However, further study is necessary to check the validity of the derived equations for other rock types. The effect of porosity on the correlations between the modulus ratio and penetration rate needs to be further investigated.

At first I read this paper with interest, which grew to fascination, and ended up with horror. Such reactions to a supposedly scientific contribution are rare, and I believe the coal mining community must be warned in the strongest possible terms against the recommendations that this paper makes. The paper purports to have assessed statistically two sets of data on methane concentrations recorded in the return air from Turkish longwalls. The first set of data, from their Table I, is reproduced in Table I below. The data have been rearranged in classes to indicate the underlying distribution. While there is only limited data (N=33), the distribution looks as if it could be the sum of two normal distributions with means around 0.5 and 0.8, or possibly a log-normal distribution. What is quite clear is that it is nota single normal distribution.

The rock brittleness is one of the most important rock properties that affect the drill-ability of rocks. It is supposed that the increase in rock brittleness causes the increase in penetration rate. The drill-ability of rocks depends on many factors. These factors can be separated as two parts depending on a machine, bit type, rotational speed, thrust, blow frequency, flushing, and rock properties, brittleness, compressive strength, structure, hardness, etc. In this paper, the relationship between brittleness and drill-ability index, which is used in the prediction analysis of the penetration rate of rotary blast hole drills, were examined using regression analysis. It is also seen that significant correlations exist between brittleness and the drill-ability index.

The aim of this paper is to provide an overview of existing forms of subcontracting in the South African mining industry. A descriptive framework is developed to understand different subcontracting arrangements. We argue that, in order to do so, it is important to distinguish between labour broking and gang subcontracting. Data resulting from a research project (including an analysis of historical sources, interviews with contractors and focus group interviews with mineworkers) is presented to highlight the implications of changing formations of subcontracting for the South African mining industry in the late 1990s. Apart from the subcontracting of ?traditional? functions, such as shaft sinking, access development, catering and hostel maintenance, contractors are now used in ?core? mining activities. In some instances, whole shafts are ?outsourced? to outside agencies. It is argued that certain of the subcontracting arrangements have serious implications for the ability of the mining industry to improve health and safety standards. Some of the practices can potentially result in conflict between different categories of workers, and, as a result, instability in the industry.

?It is in the interest of stability and investor confidence that the healthy and necessary debate on such a (minerals) policy should soon find its way to consensus.? (President Nelson Mandela at the104th (1995), AGM of the South African Chamber of Mines) Inauguration of the new political dispensation in South Africa initiated a dynamic period in the historical development of its minerals policy. The process of substituting the current South African mineral policy framework with an acceptable ?post apartheid? system, started soon after the 1994 election of the African National Congress (ANC) government. The Green Paper on a Minerals and Mining Policy for South Africa released for public discussion in February 1998, calls for radical transformation in mineral rights ownership. A shift towards exclusive state ownership of mineral rights, away from the present dual system of private and state ownership, is the most significant proposal. The current holders of mineral rights, or their nominees, who lawfully enjoyed security of tenure under past and present mineral laws are opposed to this transformation because mineral rights were often acquired at considerable cost. The situation is compounded by poor public record-keeping and passive mineral rights administration over a very long period. This paper represents a summary of the historical developments leading to the current legislative environment and forms the basis for any discussion on which future sculpturing of South Africa?s policy regarding mineral rights can take place. One cannot plan for the future without considering the past!

A novel variation of the GYPCIX process for the treatment of the acid mine effluent water from Grootvlei is described, in which a number of valuable by products can be obtained and the product water can be used for a variety of different purposes. A conceptual case study is presented in which the important cost parameters are described and certain critical path activities are indicated in order to derive a Return on Investment evaluation according to methods previously published. The study indicates that the treatment costs can be dramatically reduced, provided that proper utilization of the by products is taken into account. There are many possible uses for the water. However, by far the most advantageous contribution to the RDP and the best return on capital is derived if the water is used to establish small-lot farming activities providing work opportunities for thousands of people and contributing several hundred million Rands to the GDP. Vastly improved social conditions will be generated in an area of Gauteng that is in danger of rapid deterioration and a contribution will be made to maintaining mining activities in this area. The environmental impact is positive.

I?ve been asked to appraise the global role of coal and mining, and the best place I can think of to begin is with the World watch Institute, which purports to monitor all things global. Last fall the institute?s magazine, entitled World Watch, in a cover story called for a worldwide campaign to outlaw the use of coal before this century?s end. To my mind the article began the campaign. However, the institute had to admit that no such ban will be possible unless there is special help and heavy intervention?that is, novel policies and punitive taxes. I?ll quote directly from the magazine to underscore the point: ?without them the market will continue to deceive us into thinking coal is cheap, abundant and irreplaceable?.

Plant survey data has shown that gold recovery through a specific copper concentrator was significantly lower than copper recovery. Size-by-size analysis revealed that this was due to poor recovery of+75 µm and ?23 µm gold containing particles. In order to further investigate the nature of the gold losses, experiments were conducted at laboratory scale. Gold deportment studies on the laboratory flotation products revealed that coarse gold (+75 µm) reporting to the rougher tailing was predominantly associated with non-sulphide gangue. Further grinding of the plant rougher tailing improved recovery of gold and copper, while not affecting iron recovery, due to improved liberation of gold from non-sulphide gangue in coarse size fractions. EDTA extraction to remove surface contaminants showed a similar improvement for fine, liberated gold flotation.

Paper written on project work carried out in partial fulfilment of Phd.(Process Engineering) degree Process modelling is an essential element in the development of advanced (model-based) process control systems, accounting for up to 80% of the cost of development. Often, models based on historic process data are the only viable option when dealing with processes that cannot be modeled cost-effectively from first principles. Despite major advances that have recently been made in the field of nonlinear process modeling, some basic idea of the dynamic behaviour of a process system is important prior to system identification. While many process systems seem unlikely to be linear, the possible nonlinear aspects of their dynamics are not necessarily supported by the data. This may have significant implications for subsequent system identification or interpretation of the data. For example, it is quite possible that an underlying nonlinear deterministic signal may be obscured by a high degree of measurement or process noise, to the extent that it may be critical in the choice of model to fit to the data. The method of surrogate data analysis has recently been proposed as a means to classify the underlying dynamics of complex systems, and in this paper the use of Fourier transform surrogates to classify process systems is explored. This paper reports hardness and abrasive wear resistance test results from a wide range of WC-Co alloys, varying in cobalt content as well as WC grain size. The results show that the abrasive wear resistance increases with increasing hardness and that the rate of increase is higher for larger WC grain sizes. The increase in abrasive wear resistance was found to be parabolic up to a critical hardness value and exponential above that value. The transition from parabolic to exponential behaviour was found to occur at the same contiguity value for all grain sizes, which suggests that at that contiguity value the WC skeleton becomes continuous in all WC-Co alloys.

Effective communication is a sought-after non-technical skill in the health, safety, and environmental (HSE) function and is fundamental in achieving an organization’s safety objectives. While different channels are used to communicate HSE matters, many organizations employ posters, videos, and/ or signs containing images to convey information. Communication through signage and graphical hazard symbols has been regulated in standards, but vast sections of HSE communication are bespoke communications and exist outside the sphere of standards. Effective HSE communication through images requires an understanding of the organizational culture in which the images will be used, as well as an understanding of the semiotics of the images themselves. Creative interpretation within HSE communication can create situations where the message that was received is not the message that was intended, leading to confusion and misinterpretation. This paper is aimed at elucidating the semiotics of South African HSE visual content. It was found that the indexical mode of images was most preferred in visual communication, and text-only designs the least preferred. Senders and receivers of messages differ in their opinions on the complexity of HSE communication.

The main objectives of the Mine Mechanisation and Automation program (MMAP) are to enhance health and safety in underground mining operations, facilitate mechanization and automation in narrow-vein and deep mines, provide sound science to regulatory agencies and improve mine profitability. The program, which has a unique underground and surface industrial scale facility, is involved in many multi-partner projects, like hydrogen fuelcell applications, electrification and hydraulification of underground mines, reduction of noise and vibration, miner location device, explosive-free blasting and hoisting. The paper presents an overview of the Mine Mechanisation and Automation Program of Natural Resources Canada and some of the main projects.

This paper describes the concept and development of the use of a uni-delay shock tube system in the timing and initiation of the development rounds, specifically in flat development. It was extended from stoping and now constitutes the only initiation system is use at Kopanang mine. The two explosives initiation systems in general use in underground mines are the conventional fuse-igniter cord system, and the more modern Long Period Delay shock tube system, better known as the numbered LP system. Both are well accepted but have many drawbacks which can result in poor breaking and substantial wastage of the blasting material. Both of these deficiencies cause an increase in the cost of a blast. Hitherto, the limited number of delays available has complicated the use of shock tubes in development blasting. Over eighteen month period to the end of 2007, a project team comprising members from Kopanang Mine and AEL developed a method for the use of a uni-delay shock tubes to time any development round. These uni-delay shock tubes are better known as Reef Masters® or EZ-Stopers® depending on the supplier, and the system has particular application in flat development. During the project, two new shock tube system components were designed, tested and manufactured; namely Splitters and Starter Packs. The system has been successfully tested and implemented in both on-reef and off-reef development ends. At Kopanang, it has now been rolled out across the entire mine. Other AnglogoldAshanti mines are conducting trials and implementations into production sections. Initial results indicate improvements in the ground conditions and excavation profiles. The cost of blasting is showing a downward trend. The authors consider that the system is a tool for use in further blast optimization and will contribute to rationalization of the explosives commodities basket on mines.

This study examined the group differences in accident susceptibility among underground coal mine workers accounting for their personal and workplace characteristics. A logistic regression model was used for this purpose. Data were collected from five underground coal mines for a period of four years. The case study results revealed that different age and experience groups of workers bear no significant differences in their accident susceptibility; however, the workplace location and occupation groups show significant differences in their risk of injuries. It is inferred based on the logistic model results that among the three occupation groups, the face workers are more susceptible towards accidents/injuries compared to the haulage and other workers. The Konkola Deep Mining Project (KDMP) seeks to exploit the deep level potential of the Konkola Deeps orebody, producing high grade copper concentrates for treatment at the Nkana Smelter and Refinery. As an alternative to smelting, Konkola Copper Mines (KCM) has examined a processing route involving pressure leaching of the Konkola concentrates at Nchanga, with the leach liquor being treated by solvent extraction and electrowinning to produce high purity copper cathode. The solvent extraction circuit would be operated to achieve a high ?delta? copper, thereby providing a strong acid raffinate which can be used in the existing Tailings Leach Plant (TLP) to treat Nchanga oxide copper materials. The main focus of the hydrometallurgical option is to capitalize upon the synergy that exists between the treatment of sulphide copper concentrates (acid producing) and oxide copper ores (acid consuming). The paper discusses the key features of a comprehensive piloting campaign carried out at Anglo American Research Laboratories, which involved the co-treatment of Konkola copper concentrates and Chingola refractory ore in a fully integrated pilot plant circuit.
