Reconciliation of long-term, block-model reserves and mine production frequently shows significant discrepancies. This reconciliation can be done comparing the long-term, block-model reserves against a grade control model (a model based on blast holes or production data). In this article, this is called an Fl factor for tonnages, grade and ounces. This reconciliation should also be done by comparing the grade control model to the mill feed (or loaded to heaps) tonnages, grades and ounces (F2 factor). The long-term model usually contains blocks with dimensions larger than the size of the selective mining unit (SMU) of the operation. The smoothing effect of an estimator, such as kriging, will generally result in a grade-tonnage curve that does not match the grade-tonnage curve of the SMUs to be recovered. This problem is partly to blame for the reconciliation discrepancies found. In addition, in-pit perfect selection is impossible. Therefore, the grade-tonnage predictions based on blastholes also need to be assessed - considering unplanned dilution and the errors of estimation of the grade control model. This article focuses on using conditional simulations to assess the uncertainty of the predicted grade-tonnage curve in terms of minable reserves and in the framework of long-term mine planning. Quantifying the uncertainty in no uncertain terms is done in conjunction with a popular pit optimizer. It yields several possible minable reserves and several possible minable tonnages and grades, per pit shell or scheduled phase. This is a step further from the usual sensitivity analyses that are performed for deposit evaluation or development planning. Specifically, this approach takes into account the volume-variance relationship, the selectivity of the mining operation and the planned and unplanned dilution. It also carries the local uncertainty implicit in grade estimation into the mine design and mine planning phases. The estimation of recoverable reserves revolves around estimating the block distribution of metal grades from the drill hole information available, typically composites of a fixed length. Ideally, this estimation should accurately predict the ore sent to the processing facilities of an operation. Here are some definitions used in this article: ? Recoverable reserves are those where an attempt has been made to estimate the actual distribution of grades (usually by a block model) that would be found in the ground at the time of mining, relative to the mine equipment size and other operational characteristics of the mine SMU. In particular, it incorporates the effect of internal dilution for each block how the grade distribution changes in variability when comparing a composite grade distribution to the "mining unit" grade distribution. In geostatistical jargon, this is known as "change of support effect," or volume-variance effect. ? Minable reserves are those recoverable reserves defined by a mine plan. In an open-pit scenario, they would incorporate pit optimization in addition to the sequencing and scheduling of production through mine life. ? All other block model estimates from drill hole data that do not explicitly attempt to estimate or measure the volume-variance effect are called in situ. It can be argued that these models may be inappropriate tools for predicting the grade-tonnage curve of the material to be sent for processing (minable reserves). The purpose of estimating recoverable reserves can be thought of as estimating the appropriate amount of dilution that should be incorporated into the model so that it adequately predicts (long-term and on average) the grade-tonnage curve of the ore sent to the processing facilities (mean grades and ton-

The rockburst monitoring system at the Sunshine Mine has recently been improved to increase the certainty of burst locations and to output location results in a manner amenable to easy interpretation. Three methods of location calculation were used: a computer code provided with the hardware in-place (the MP-2501, a code based on the least-squares method (Blake et a1, 19741, and a nonlinear iterative code written by the principal author. The more accurate locations are given by the latter two codes, but still are only correct to within about 100 ft. This error is due to uncertainties introduced by the geologic and mining variations versus the assumptions made in the location codes. Software was then written to make two-dimensional plots of burst location by level, so management could monitor problems easily.

This paper presents detailed information on the genesis, formation, and industrial utilization of Yaylacik magnesites. Tectonically, the study area is located within the Tavsanli Zone, immediately south of the Izmir-Ankara suture in western Turkey. The geologic setting mainly comprises ophiolitic melangks basics, and ultrabasics associated with very rich magnesite deposits and lacustrine sediments. The ophiolitic unit tectonically overlies the schists and carbonate rocks. The presence of glaucophane and lawsonite indicates a low-temperature/high-pressure metamorphism. The ultra- basic rocks, which exhibit cumulate composition, have been mostly serpentinised and represent the oceanic floor of the Yaylacik ophiolite. Basic intrusives consist of dolerite and diabase, and they show the characteristics of within-plate dolerites. The magnesite occurrences are commonly observed in block, stockwork, lens, and vein forms and were deposited within the serpentinites. In most magnesite samples, secondary quartz/chalcedony formations are observed as fracture fillings due to the highly effective tectonic movements. Field surveys and microscope studies reveal that magnesites had been formed by the metasomatic alteration of serpentinites. Chemical analyses show that, although MgO content of the magnesites varies from 43.41% to 50.48%, Fe203 and CaO are lower than 1%. Silica contents are as high as 5.52% in a few samples. Although Yaylacik magnesites are not suitable for making basic refractory bricks, they are widely used as caustic-calcined magnesite in a variety of applications, including animal food, artificial fertilizer, chemical (acid neutralizer), medical and pharmaceutical, and water treatment.

A new examination of tabular uranium (U)-vanadium (V) deposits within the La Sal district places mineralization in the context of the complex fluid flow history that has occurred in the Paradox Basin and Colorado Plateau. As the only currently producing district of this deposit type in the region, the La Sal district provides excellent opportunities to study deposit- and district-scale features that can serve as exploration guides where exposure is limited. The absence of major structures along a narrow and elongate mineral trend that runs E-W across the southern part of the Utah-Colorado border indicates a regional lithologic control. The trend was likely influenced by Jurassic drainage patterns, as indicated by paleocurrent directions shown in Fig. 1. Fluvial sandstone host rocks in the Jurassic Morrison Formation contain significant evidence of multiple superimposed fluid systems that have progressively changed local mineralogy. Apart from the presence of ore minerals, remnants of fluid systems are preserved as cements including quartz overgrowths, compositionally distinct carbonates, and sheet silicates. New geochronology methods provide constraints on the timing of initial mineralization and later remobilization. U-Pb ages of calcite associated with ore minerals provide evidence for Early Cretaceous mineralization, whereas textures and K-Ar ages show that early-formed V-minerals were replaced at the expense of V-bearing micas and clays during the Eocene. To many who for years have scrutinized the US mineral supply picture, recent, often strident debate on present-day security of many critical mineral supplies echoes sentiments repeatedly expressed in the past decade by the minerals industry. At no time since the last world war has such a flurry of public concern been expressed for the economy's mineral sector. Where once mineral availability problems were relegated to the newspaper's business section or not reported at all, today comprehensive analyses of our international mineral posture are discussed in detail by some of the nation's most respected and widely read periodicals. In past years, disinterest was also experienced whenever the mining industry attempted to carry its message to Congress, the public, and the government's executive branch. Among minerals professionals, the past decade was a time of particular frustration clue to serious erosion ill US ability to competitively produce the vast array of raw materials vital to the economy acid national defense. Fervent calls for immediate attention were simply not answered. These professionals have understood that mining and agriculture are the primary sources of wealth, fulfilling virtually all needs and creating and sustaining jobs. Why then has it been so difficult to raise the consciousness of the American public, and even more surprisingly, of the government and national leadership? The answer to this question is perhaps endemic to how government functions, but pore important, it begs that mining professionals capitalize on the opportunity and the attention now at hand. Carefully conceived and implemented actions by both private and public sectors are needed more than ever before in the past 35 years. To this end, it is vitally important to seek out and resolve the root causes of supply problems and not dwell on superficial solutions. The following discussion attempts to establish a simple framework to view this process. It does not presume to be an exposition of cause and effect, but hopefully identifies some needed steps. Growing Awareness in the 1970s Of all events stimulating current concern, certainly the OPEC oil embargo has left the deepest impression. It was inevitable that after such a shock, man. Americans would begin asking whether the US was as vulnerable to cutoffs of minerals as it was to oil cutoffs. Then, when serious trade security questions surfaced in sonic mineral-rich nations in Africa and the Persian Gulf, the ominous term ''resource war" began to be heard. Countries such as South Africa, Zaire, Zambia, and Zimbabwe have suddenly become key areas for testing our national security resolve. As the US witnesses the influx of Marxist influence in many sub-Saharan exporting nations and the rising threat to free world access to critical materials and energy, the assurance of adequate supplies is becoming a national issue at last. The US is now learning that self-sufficiency for many vitally important mineral commodities has vanished. Of course, it did not vanish overnight; it had been leaking away for years, and the trend was noted by industry and a few in government. Within the minerals community, suspected weaknesses in America's resource posture were sought and found. As a result, the country's heavy reliance on foreign sources fur more than a score of minerals, many extremely vital to security, has been forcefully documented and the case for drastically altering the supply unbalance hits been proposed. The renewed concern for national defense is central to almost all proposals for minimizing US foreign mineral dependence. It is not surprising that many of the voices heard today on the dependency issue are active members or alumni of the militate establishment. Unfortunately, their almost total focus on the security aspects of dependency has tended to obscure important underlying issues which are not directly defense-related. Some of the proposals advanced might mitigate the deeps-dency problems, but they still fall short of curing the underlying problems that have led to a steady loss in mineral self-sufficiency. In almost all instances these problems call be traced to increasing government influence on the free market minerals economy. Some national security proponents seek to attain total self-sufficiency in minerals. Such arguments must he tempered by existing realities. It is easy to demonstrate that the US obtains substantial quantities of sonic essential minerals from potentially insecure sources abroad. That the US will continue to do so in the foreseeable future is not in doubt Uncertainty begins, however, when we try to interpret the significance of these facts. It is important to understand that mineral dependency does not irrevocably lead to vulnerability. Unlike oil, no mineral commodity combines the same degree of universal indispensibility and centralized foreign control of supplies. Moreover, although many US-required minerals are produced by fewer countries than export oil, those minerals cannot approach petroleum in economic or industrial importance. Finally, most foreign supplies come front friendly, secure nations such as Canada, 'Mexico, and Brazil. This, aid more, constitutes a vital element in US economic health as a world trading nation. Industrial-mineral mining started early in the history of the State when salt was extensively mined for use in processing gold and silver ores, and borates were produced to meet most of the world's needs. After this start, industrial-mineral production grew slowly until World War II, mostly because of the remoteness of the State and the small population. Nevada now has a large and varied industrial-mineral industry. In 1983, 14 principal commodities were produced from 48 deposits; the total value of these materials was 168 million dollars. Nevada ranks first in domestic production of barite and magnesite; second in diatomite, gem stones, and lithium; third in fluorspar; and sixth in gypsum. Other materials produced are carbonate rocks, cement, clays, decorative and crushed stone, light- weight aggregate, perlite, pyritic soil additive, salt, sand and gravel, and silica. From 1978 through 1982 barite was the most important commodity; in 1983 diatomite surpassed barite in value of production. Most of the Nevada production consists of high-value commodities that are consumed out of the State. Approximately 430 significant deposits with 20 principal commodities are present in Nevada. This abundance can be attributed to the numerous and diverse geologic processes that have been operative. Seven major modes of origin have been identified: hydrothermal activity, sedimentation, combined hydrothermal activity-sedimentation, evaporative precipitation, brine formation, extrusion of igneous rocks, and alteration by ground water. The hydrothermal type accounted for 39 percent of the deposits, the combined hydrothermal-sedimentary type for 28 percent, and the sedimentary type for 13 percent. Nevada diatomite production is about 200,000 short tons/year valued at 30 million dollars. In 1984 three companies operated in Nevada producing diatomite from six open pits and processing it at four plants - one plant producing filter-grade materials and the others adsorbents and fillers. The diatomite occurs in about 60 areas, almost all in the western one-third of the State. The diatomites were deposited in long-lasting, fresh-water lakes in topographically closed valleys formed by basin-and-range faulting. About 85 percent of the barite mined in the United States is produced in Nevada. In 1981 the high point of production,-2.5 million short tons of bedded barite was produced from about 30 open-pit mines. About 120 significant bedded-barite deposits are known in Nevada; 38 of these have had past production of more than 25,000 short tons. The deposits are associated with marine siliceous rocks of Cambrian through Devonian age and occur in a zone about 300 miles long and 60 miles wide. Abundant evidence supports the theory that the bedded barite is of exhalative sedimentary origin.

Since mechanically suitable grinding mills were available in 1908, mill operators have been searching for the best material and design with which to line the mills. These liner systems had to fulfill several criteria. First and foremost they had to last long enough in an operating mill to protect the mill structure from the abrasive wear of the ore and the grinding media. In addition they had to be able to efficiently transfer the energy from the mill to the mill charge in order to facilitate the grinding process. The liners also had to be easily attached to the mill when new and removed from the mill when worn out. The first liners used were generally made of cast white iron, Hadfield manganese, unalloyed high carbon steel and composites of steel and concrete or cemented in flint blocks or natural stone. 1

Seventy three technical sessions highlighted innovative technologies and applications for the development of mineral resources. And the exhibit featured 421 companies worldwide and 632 exhibit booths. The 1999 SME Annual Meeting had 10% international attendance Professionals from outside the United States were guests at the first SME International Reception. Other meeting highlights included the Keynote Session. This pivotal session examined the international experience of North American-based companies. Speakers presented their perspectives on international explorations and operations. Keynote speakers included Robert Buchan, Chairman an( Chief Executive Officer, Kinross Gold; Dave Baker, Director Global Mining Project Management, Caterpillar; and Leendert Krol, Vice President International Operations Newmont Gold. The, control of drilling and blasting is a complicated dynamic system whose aim is to ensure safety and prepare rock of required grade and the standard level of broken material reserves Unlike other processes drilling and blasting, as an object have the following features: -a large variety of drilling and blasting methods due to specific conditions of blasting, various types of drilling equipment, schemes-of blasting, types of explosives and others; -relative continuity of drilling, the character of mammoth blasts being discrete; -increased requirements to the safety of blasting;; -a great. number of control parameters, some of them having a qualitative characteristic but not a quantitative one; -availability of feedforward and feedback with other mining processes in terms of time and space. These features predetermine the hierarchical structure of an automated system of planning and control of drilling and blasting (fig.1). The system is implemented on the basis of unity of the data base and in interre lation with other problems of controlling mining operations. An automated system of this kind makes it possible to take optimal decisions actually on all the levels and stages of operations, with rock having been blasted before extraction.

Recent mining regulations have increased the need for detailed engineering and environmental information pertaining to the hydrogeologic environment in mining areas. The cost of obtaining such hydrogeologic information has also increased. After mineralization of potentially economic grade ore and tonnage has been identified, and after completing preliminary mining feasibility studies (suggesting that development is merited), a second exploration phase can incorporate a simple, cost-effective baseline hydrogeologic data reconnaissance program that is limited but useful. Using exploration drill holes only, this program can provide a direct indication of where ground water is encountered. Also, reasonable estimates can be made on the relative production of water from various water-bearing strata, a composite potentiometric surface map can be prepared, and the general chemistry of the ground water can be characterized. This article outlines what typical baseline hydrogeologic data are needed and describes how it can be easily obtained during exploration drilling. Introduction Major engineering and environmental ground water parameters can be identified early in a project by using, drill hole data obtained from a mineral exploration program, designed by the mine geologist and hydrogeologist. Most importantly, data obtained in the exploration drilling program can be used to design a logical, defensible, and cost-effective baseline ground water data reconnaissance and monitor well program, which would be required for mine design and ultimately for mine permit approval. Drilling Where possible, exploration drill holes should be drilled with conventional rotary drilling equipment using air or, if necessary, water as the drilling fluid. Rotary air or water drilling generally allow good delineation of the first major saturated or water-bearing zone. If mud must be used during drilling, distinct hydrogeologic zones can still be defined, although the task may be considerably more difficult. Water Levels Static water levels can be obtained from selected exploration drill holes at specific depths while additional boreholes are drilled. Such measurements should not, however, be conducted until the hole has been developed with air (no water) and has stabilized at each of the depths to be measured. Such water-level information can be particularly useful when more than one aquifer exists. Where mine development is eminent, the hydrogeologist should install 50-100 mm (2-4 in.) diameter PVC casing in select drill holes. The PVC should be slotted, gravel packed, and properly sealed so additional hydrogeologic data can be collected for specific hydrogeologic zones at a later date. Such data could include water level information, permeability estimates based on injection and /or pumping tests, and water quality data. Where casing is not installed in drill holes, or when the drill holes are abandoned, the holes should be properly grouted and back-filled to the ground surface to prevent potential future ground water contamination. Monitoring Air Lift Water Production Estimates of the relative production from various water-bearing strata can be obtained from selected exploration drill holes. Estimating the lithologic composition of gravel deposits for aggregate quality using standard field and laboratory techniques is costly and time-consuming. As an alternative, digital geologic maps and elevation models may provide a means for predicting the lithologic composition of channel and terrace deposits. Digital geologic maps can be used to evaluate the distribution of map units: their geomorphic setting, and the physical properties of the gravel source. To test this concept, the lithologies and topography of the upper drainage basin of the Big Thompson River along the Colorado Front Range were used to examine various factors that may control the final lithologic composition of channel and terrace gravels downstream. The simplest factor is the area of each of the map units in the upper drainage basin area, which can be easily measured from the digital geologic map. The percentage of each map unit within the total area provides a estimate of the pro- portions of each map unit that might be expected to occur in the downstream gravels. Published estimates of the hardness and durability of each map unit were used to calculate physical property-weighted areas; these areas are an estimate of the potential of each unit to be eroded and transported as gravel-sized particles. The areas of each map unit at 1-kilometer intervals from the drainage basin exit point were used to calculate a distance-weighted area for each map unit. For this study, a simple inverse relationship (area/distance) was used for distance weighting, but a more complicated distance function may ultimately be required. The topographic setting of exposed rock units should exert a significant influence on whether material will move slowly or rapidly through the drainage system. Two topographic factors were examined: gradient and slope. A simple gradient between map unit occurrences and the exit point of the drainage basin was used to calculate a gradient-weighted area estimate for each map unit. The slope-weighted area estimate uses the slope steepness (in degrees) in the immediate vicinity of each map unit occurrence as a measure of the tendency of material to begin moving into the sediment transport system. The primary intent of this study was to test the concept of using digital geologic map and elevation images to estimate gravel composition, rather than actually producing a useful analysis of a drainage basin. Each of the controlling factors was examined independently to gain an understanding of the magnitude of the effect of each factor. Ultimately, a comprehensive predictive model will be constructed using a combination of the various controlling factors.

Leonard and Newman (1989) describe concepts and plans of their forthcoming project designed to increase the bulk density of broken coal at various stages of its production and handling. This is an excellent idea and something that will certainly be useful to the coal mining industry worldwide. The authors seek to achieve bulk density increase by "reducing oreliminating, through chemical additives and engineering design, particle voidage and enhance particle consolidation trickling between the point of breakage (at the face) and loading (in the shuttle car) to increase coal bulk density and productivity." In the paper, they present some supporting results of bulk density versus moisture, with or without oil addition, from the steel industry research. Unfortunately, the paper contains many misconceptions and half-truths that detract from an otherwise excellent objective of the project of increasing bulk density by reducing particle voidage -"the bottom line evaluator." This chapter describes the nature and occurrence of the principal clay minerals that are used as ceramic raw materials, explains how these raw materials are used to produce finished goods, and summarizes positive and negative trends that will affect future demand for raw materials and products in the ceramic industry. The term ceramics was derived from the ancient Greek keramikos (a clay jar). A ceramic product is a material that has been fired to at least 468.3°C (Mitchell, 1983). In addition to being one of our earliest manufacturing and construction materials, ceramic products are among the earliest records of civilization. The enduring significance of ceramics is shown by the fact that, even today, the manufacture of whitewares, brick and related red-fired wares, refractories, and engineered ceramics continues to be a major sector of the US economy. A wide range of materials can be made into ceramic products, although relatively few earth materials make up most of the ceramics in today's markets (Table 1). Most ceramic products are made from clay or a related material. The long history of clay use in the ceramics industry stems from its variable and sometimes unique physical and chemical properties, as well as its ubiquitous occurrence and relatively low cost. Clay is important to ceramics because of its plasticity, moldability and filterability, chemical content, color. refractoriness, solubility. corrosion resistance, electrical properties, and other properties that result from the essentially two dimensional morphology of the individual clay mineral platelets. Because of their basic relationships to the chemical and physical properties of clays, the chemical and mineralogical content have been the subject of continuous studies over the past few decades. Advances in knowledge about the chemical, mineralogical, and physical properties of clays are responsible for most of the advances in processing. The need to remove off-colored contaminants, minerals with low melting points, and soluble salts has resulted in beneficiation by wet processing methods such as water washing. Water washing is restricted to kaolins, although low cost methods of water washing have been extended more recently to ball clays in Europe. High intensity magnetic filtration and flotation technologies have noticeably improved the quality of kaolins and broadly expanded their use in the ceramics industry. In addition to products for construction (e.g., brick, tile, sewer pipe, field drain pipe, cement, fiberglass, roof granules, and paint) and manufacturing (e.g., refractories, kiln furniture, sanitary ware, pottery, and dinnerware), clays are used in calcined form as ceramic fillers, carriers, extenders, and grogs. Ceramics suppliers are under economic pressure in several of these product areas. Manufacture of refractories in America has declined as steel production has decreased. Santa Rosa is a mid-Tertiary, volcanic-hosted, gold-silver deposit. Current proven and probable reserves are 8.9 Mt (9.8 million st) grading 1.5 g/t (0.044 oz/ st) gold, minable by open pit and amenable to heap leaching. It is the product of hydrothermal mineralization along an arcuate segment of a caldera collapse ring fault in a probable maar volcanic setting. This segment was later broken by radial faults. Gold at Santa Rosa occurs principally as electrum, finely disseminated through intermediate tuffs, and associated with pyrite. The nearby Alto de la Mina deposit displays stockwork silica-pyrite-gold in a tectonically and hydrothermally shattered andesite flow. Miocene epithermal mineralization was accompanied by central silicification and pyritization and more distal argillization. An andesite flow cap rock at Santa Rosa played a pivotal role as an upward permeability barrier. Highest gold grades and most intense alteration occur closest to the ring faults and immediately beneath the andesite flow. Supergene alteration effects on the gold distribution are minimal.

The paper is divided into two parts. The first part describes an investigation of the effect of temperature on the conditioning and flotation of an ilmenite ore with a 1:l oleic acid-fuel oil mixture as collector. During conditioning the pulp underwent characteristic changes of flocculation, deflocculation and dispersion which were monitored by measuring the power consumption of the conditioner motor. Optimum flotation results were obtained at the end of the deflocculation period. High ilmenite recoveries were obtained at high temperatures and high concentrate grades at low temperatures. The second part of the paper describes a study of the effect of temperature on the adsorption of oleic acid at the ilmenite/water interface. At high adsorption densities it was chemical and exothermic. Contact angles showed that the hydrophobicity of the collector-coated minerals increased with an increase in temperature.

The listed title of my talk to-day is "MODERN ON STRAND SINTER COOLING". Perhaps it should he ve been "COMPLETION OF SINTERING ON THE STRAND" as the two are synonymous. By the very nature of the DWIGHT-LLOYD SINTERING PROCESS partial cooling on the strand is always present, but not completion of sintering and cooling on the strand. I have mentioned the Dwight-Lloyd process just to be certain the type of sintering under discussion is fully identified because some of the basic mechanisms of sintering occur in various pyro-processing of fines lying in close quiescent contact, such as powdered metals practices, some types of pellet induration, firing of briquets, or other compacts, where the entire bed is brought to, and held at, the high reaction temperatures of sintering. Figure 1, The continuous sintering process as originally conceived consisted of intimately mixing carefully proportioned burdens, placing them in a comparatively thin, draft permeable layer, on a moving grate and igniting the surface while drawing sir through the bedded burden. The moving grate was advanced slowly as the line of burning fuel travelled from the surface to the bottom of the bed and no more fire zone could be seen.

Laboratory and pilot tests have shown that the grinding of some aluminas makes two populations appear : agglomerates’ and ultimate crystals’. Classical breakage functions (Size Mass Balance Method) aren't able to describe correctly this kind of grinding. So we have optimized a particular breakage matrix which takes into account the fact that the agglomerates can either be reduced in size or either be blown up to liberate the ultimate crystals. The models which were developed using this breakage matrix are in good agreement with the experimental results of the pilot tests. The industrial breakage functions were estimated from pilot breakage functions, using scale up prediction procedures and plant tests. The agreement between predicted and actual plant performance is excel1ent.A 20 % increase in capacity was predicted to be available by improving the grinding circuit classifier performances.

This paper describes work carried out to obtain a heat balance in the B3 shaft longwall stope at Blyvooruitzicht gold mine. Recordings were made of the temperature of the air and chilled water entering and leaving the section during three periods, August 1 September 1977, November 1 December 1977 and March 1978. These recordings, together with numerous other measurements were used to determine the rate at which heat was being removed from the section by the various fluids flowing through the section. The rate at which heat was entering the section was then calculated, by considering each source in turn. These two sets of figures made it possible to draw up a heat balance, and also obviously gave vital information on the magnitudes of the various heat sources and on the methods used to remove heat. In general reasonable heat balances were obtained, the errors being in the range -6 per cent to +22 per cent.

Over the past 14 years, the efforts of 2 companies and several individuals have outlined a major solfataric gold ore body in the Summitville district in the southeast San Juan Mountains of Colorado. The hard work of these years could not have flowered without a dedication to modern exploration methods, an intense interest in new theories of ore genesis, and a relentless discontent with the accepted geology of the Summitville area. To set the stage for this discovery period, it must be noted that it began 100 years after gold was first found at Summitville. It was the height of the "porphyry copper" era and gold was still not a part of the explorationists' portfolio. It was also a time of great intellectual stimulation. Theories were rapidly developing to relate different types of ore deposition and to place ore genesis within the fabric of plate tectonics. Summitville itself had just been linked to the newly discovered Platoro caldera complex and the Platoro lineament. This in turn related Summitville to the other San Juan volcanic field caldera ore deposits.
