In recent years, tunnelling activities in Singapore have increased considerably with the construction of extensions to the existing sub-surface transport system, a deep tunnel sewerage disposal system, and tunnels for the laying power cables and other utilities. These tunnels are excavated through urban areas, adjacent to high-rise buildings, depressed road structures, beneath other tunnels, and buried services. Earth pressure balance (EPB) tunnel boring machines (TBM) have been used extensively in Singapore with great success. The risk associated with soft ground tunnelling, including tunnelling through Old Alluvium, can be minimized with an understanding of the geology, geotechnical parameters, and the tunnelling-induced behaviour of Old Alluvium (OA The purpose of this paper is to present some design and construction aspects of EPB TBM tunnelling through Old Alluvium.

The classical approach to control rock fall and ravel in open pit mining has been to use catch benches. The width and volume of benches is most dependent on the bench height, size of loading equipment, blast damage to the face and mining regulations. This was compatible with open pit slopes of less than about 45°. As our understanding of rock mechanics and blasting control has improved over recent years, much steeper rock slopes can be developed at many open pit mines. However, narrower benches result with less rock fall capacity. The transportation industry has been very successful in using catch fences to protect highways throughout North America and Europe for years. The authors recommend that cable and ring net fences have a potential major application in open pit mining to allow steeper rock slopes with significant economic benefit. This paper outlines the application, design and operation of catch fences in surface mining for specific conditions. Typical case examples are presented.

The war in Vietnam stretched into another decade, an American President was at the brink of impeachment, the earth was given its own day, twin tower monuments of American ingenuity were completed in New York and would stand high above the Manhattan skyline for 31 years. Inflation, oil shortages, low commodity prices and America’s 200th birthday were part of the decade — it was the 1970s. For the mining industry, the demands of the decade would be high and the challenges would be significant. Because of the many challenges that lined up in front of it, the mining industry was forced to work smarter and more efficiently. The industry also expanded its borders in search of new resources and struggled along with the rest of the world through a fuel crisis, inflation and a recession.

Stanford Linear Accelerator Center (SLAC) is located in Menlo Park, CA. In order to allow for enhanced experiments, the current facilities required expansion. Tunnels were excavated through very weak sedimentary rock interspersed with uncemented zones (Ladera Sandstone) employing the principles of the NATM. The overburden var-ied from 10 to 80 feet. The paper addresses the characterization of Ladera Sandstone that can exhibit the properties of dense sand and weak rock. The paper focuses on the challenges that were encountered during the NATM initial support design and the construction phase including the geotechnical instrumentation, monitoring and design verification process in particular the excavation of the junction between access tunnel and the FEH cavern (49 ft wide by 32 ft high).

The quality of water in mine pit lakes depends in part on the physical limnology, including such factors as thermal and chemical stratification, turnover and the development of anoxic conditions with depth. Limnologic data collected from four existing pit lakes in Montana and Saskatchewan indicate that pit lakes develop a thermocline (temperature stratification) in the upper 10 to 30 m (33 to 100 ft) of the water column. Two of the pit lakes, 26- and 55-m (85and 180 ft) deep, undergo seasonal turnover of the entire water column, whereas two deeper pit lakes, 110- and 240-m (360- to 790 ft) deep, undergo seasonal turnover of only the upper portion of the water column. In the deeper lakes, seasonal mixing does not extend through the entire water column, and a distinct chemocline develops with depth.

The need for anti-corrosion coatings has existed for many years in the ground support industry, but the application requirements have made coating selection limited. Varying groundwater and chemical conditions continually challenge long term coating performance. Traditionally the industry coating preference has been hot-dip galvanizing due to its performance characteristics in highly corrosive environments and low cost nature. However, the galvanized coating has application limitations. This paper highlights some of these limitations and provides selection criteria for a new organic coating developed for one such difficult application, DSI?s Omega BoltPTM Pwhich is an expandable ground support. Ultra fine grinding is becoming increasingly used in the mining industry over recent years. The development of large-scale units for high volume grinding of low value materials and concentrates has opened up new areas of economical metal extraction. The ability of stirred vertical mills to produce very fine particles with high surface areas, is providing mine operators with novel extraction possibilities within gold concentrate regrind for Biox or leach feed, Activox autoclave feed preparation and lime slaking operations. The paper will review design, operational and maintenance aspects of ANI-Metprotech stirred vertical mills, comparing these to tower mills, horizontal bead mills and attrition mills.

More than 111,350 mining and construction industry professionals from throughout the world gathered in Las Vegas, NV, March 19-23 for ConExpo-Con/Agg 2002 and IFPE 2002. The triennial event is the Western Hemisphere’s largest equipment show for the quarrying, aggregates, construction and ready-mixed concrete industries. Despite the difficulties in the world economy, ConExpo-Con/Agg 2002 attracted more than 2,450 exhibitors from throughout the world. This was an increase from the 1,882 exhibitors that were on hand for the 1999show. And this year’s show occupied more than 180,225m2 (1.94 million sq ft) of exhibit space at the Las Vegas Convention Center. This was an increase from the160,900 m2 (1.73-million sq ft) occupied at the 1999event.

San Martin Mine is an open pit, gold heap leach operation located approximately 70 kilometers from the Honduran capital of Tegucigalpa. Mining operations commenced in 2000 and were completed late in 2007, while heap leaching operations continue. Reclamation was executed concurrently with operations to the extent practical. The area has distinct rainy and dry seasons and closure objectives include: prevention and mitigation of acid rock drainage, sediment and erosion control, and mitigation of visual impacts. Final closure is well underway at San Martin and this paper describes the closure processes conducted to date, problems encountered, and the subsequent lessons learned.

Over the past several decades, the use of cement-based grouts using ultra fine cement as a replacement for portland cement has begun to gain acceptance as an alternative to chemical solution grouts used in permeation grouting. The amount of information currently available on grouts made with ultrafine cement is limited. The authors used a previously developed field testing program to perform additional tests to evaluate the permeation performance of portland and ultrafine cement-based grouts. For the first time, the 2003 testing program included an attempt to determine the 28 day compressive strength of the sand permeated by the grout.

The catalytic effect of ferrous ion in the industrial biohydrometallurgical heap and dump leaching processes is explained. During the bacterial leaching of metal sulfides, ferric ion will partly be hydrolyzed and a variety of sols, gels, amorphous and/ or crystalline mono- and polynuc- lear hydroxo- and sulfato complex species formed, especially by olation and aggregation reactions. There are many problems associated with these iron precipitates especially in the purification of leach solutions. The present study will discuss the iron precipitation reactions; gives kinetic and thermodynamic evaluations of the effect of temperature on pyrite and ferrous iron oxidation; and reports on the tolerance of heavy metal ion concentrations by Thiobacillus ferrooxidans.

Barrick Gold plans to have four new gold mines in production by 2006. Together, the mines would increase the company’s output by 40 percent. The projects include Veladero in Argentina, Alto Chicama in Peru, Cowal in Australia and Tulawaka in Tanzania. All of them are scheduled to begin production between the first quarter of 2005 and the first quarter of 2006. They are expected to drive Barrick Gold’s growth profile to a target of 211.5 to 217.7 t (6.8 million to 7 mil-lion oz) of gold production in 2007. The company’s projected output for 2004 is 152.4 to 155.5 t (4.9 million to 5million oz) in 2004. Overall, higher production and lower costs are expected in the early years from the new mines.

Silicon is the second most abundant element on earth, exceeded only by oxygen. Silicon dioxide forms a crystalline structure of repeating SiO2 molecules which form characteristically hard, durable crystals. As a result, crystalline silica is Ubiquitous in the crustal rocks, sediments and the mineral products derived from mining. An examination of the history of studies that identify silica as a human and animal carcinogen is presented in the context of the development of a public health policy in California. The implications for the cost of conducting aggregate and other mining operations in the state are discussed.

The Arrowhead Tunnels Project represents the final portion of a 70 km (44-mile) long water conveyance facility that will bring up to 28 m3/sec (1,000 ft 3/sec) of water into Southern California. The 13 km (8-mile) tunnelling project is well underway and consists of two, 5.8 m (19-ft) diameter TBM bores through extremely variable geological conditions. An extensive and essential pre-excavation drilling and grouting program was performed in all reaches of the Arrowhead Tunnels Project, located north of San Bernardino, CA. This program supported the advance of two hybrid hard rock TBMs though extremely challenging ground conditions under substantial ground cover and up to 27 bar (900 ft) of ground water pressure. The well known San Andreas Fault lies nearby and has greatly influenced the local geological conditions. This paper will describe the means, methods and materials used throughout the numerous phases of the pre-excavation grouting program. It will also describe many versatile, flexible and innovative drilling and grouting methods and equipment systems utilized to improve performance, save time and costs in constantly changing geological conditions. Considerable lessons learned have been learned while overcoming some extremely formidable ground conditions and safely advancing the tunnels.

In decision making support system, that are used in various fields of environmental protection (environmental impact assessment, environmental management systems, setting environmental standards and regulation, etc.), it is often important to apply various mathematical environmental engineering models. The question of linking environmetal engineering modeling to decision making support system used in environmental protection is not yet methodically solved. The reasons for that could be manifold. Decison making support systems, used in environmental protection, because they are simply taken from bussines decision making, are not often adequate for specific problems raised in environmental protection. On the other hand, there are great number of types of models in environmental engineering, what urges the problem of finding the way of their proper linking with decision making support systems. The application of fuzzy logic in that field is estimated as one of possible solution of the problem.

Twin bore running tunnels driven approximately 4,500 route feet by a Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) EPB Tunnel Boring Machine link the West Portal and East Portal on this complex Light Rail Project. One third along the way, the TBM arrives at the Beacon Hill Station which is the deepest underground “binocular” station of its kind in North America and then “walks-across” the station to be re-launched on the other side to complete the drive. This paper discusses briefly the layout and design considerations but then focuses more deeply on the approach by the Contractor to drive and supply the tunnel. The paper addresses the approach used to launch, re-launch and recover the TBM and touches briefly on muck volume control and monitoring plus settlement monitoring and the performance achieved. Also of interest is a unique solution to a difficult launch situation involving a secant pile tieback wall designed with several rows of double I-beam steel walers spanning the eye at the West Portal under the I-5 freeway.

The lack of integration of mining and metallurgical information with sufficient detail for analysis causes inefficient operation and hence sub-optimal energy and water use. It is difficult to analyze the performance of mining and metallurgical processes without an integrated view of mine transactions, stockpile inventories, process flows and assays. To take action requires real time information from manufacturing assets, corrected for gross errors from trucks, shovels, conveyors, faulty sensors, bad instrument calibration. This paper presents an infrastructure with advanced tools that sift through available data, identify and eliminate gross errors, and transform the data into business information for continuous improvement and optimization. Collaboration is a key component of improving efficiency of energy and water use, and the evolution of Web technology enables collaboration and troubleshooting of plant information to more quickly act on issues to reduce wasteful operation. Over a period of seven years (1989-1996) the Mineral Industry Research Laboratory (MIRL) University of Alaska Fairbanks, has investigated the effects of temperature, residence time, and particle size on the degree of low-rank coal (LRC) upgrading for a non-evaporative, hydrothermal drying process, also known as hot water drying (HWD). Three Alaskan LRCs were used in this study: Usibelli coal (Seam No. 4) from the Nenana Coal Field, Little Tonzona coal from near McGrath, and Beluga coal from the Beluga-Yentna field on the west side of Cook Inlet. Replicated, factorial tests were conducted. Experimental results indicate that most of the low-rank coal upgrading via HWD occurs rapidly within the first 10-20 minutes of residence time. Thereafter, the upgrading process slows down and over 100 minutes of additional residence time are required to produce similar percentage increases in coal properties to those achieved in the first 10- 20 minutes. The properties of the hot water dried products were very sensitive to process temperature. Calorific value, carbon and oxygen contents, equilibrium moisture levels and Hardgrove gindabilities all appear to change linearly with temperature within the 275°C to 325°C range.

The Magmont Mine, a 50/50 venture between Cominco American Incorporated (the Operator) and Dresser Industries, Inc., (Halliburton), is a metallic mining and milling facility in the new lead belt of Missouri. The mine is located approximately 100 miles southwest of St. Louis. Legislation passed in 1992 by the Missouri legislature requires all metallic mining and processing facilities to apply for a Metallic Minerals Waste Management permit (MMWM) for their waste facilities. Regulations were subsequently promulgated by the Missouri Department of Natural Resources (DNR). Cominco obtained a MMWM permit (MM-006) from the Missouri DNR in 1992.
