Mineral processing activities in general reflected the economic ills of 1981 and early 1982, but in some areas the depressed state of the industry resulted in increased activity. As were all aspects of the minerals industry, processing plant operations were severely affected by the recession-prone economy, by sagging prices for primary metal products-copper, molybdenum, nickel, iron, manganese, and especially uranium-and numerous shutdowns and layoffs. Copper production by major producers in Arizona and Utah was severely curtailed; Amax, the major US molybdenum, producer did considerable belt-tightening; and the uranium industry was in a state of disaster. Even the precious metal superstars-gold and silver-were affected, with a steady decline throughout the year in world market prices. Perhaps hardest hit have been newly developed properties, particularly in the uranium industry, and old-line properties where historical development impacts today. No longer can such properties afford the luxuries, for example, of a long haul distance between mine and plant or continued use of antiquated facilities. Surprisingly enough, the very state of the economy has caused increased activity in some sectors of the mineral processing industry. In mill design, although large projects have been tabled, smaller projects have gone on, with innovations in design, often for cost-saving reasons, that will affect future designing approaches. Economic restrictions are impacting on mill flowsheets as researchers look for improvements and better, less expensive techniques. Other unit processes-hydrometallurgy, pyrometallurgy, concentration, materials handling-are impacted by the need for a better, less costly product. Although at the end of the first quarter of 1982, no major environmental legislation had been enacted, rumors persist that there will be a loosening of some of the stricter standards, both in the requirements themselves and in the time allowance for implementation. The year had seen some relaxation in how current legislation and standards are administered. For example, in OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration) operations, there has been a shift toward voluntary checking of industry compliance with work rules, rather than emphasis on agency inspections. However, the industry continues to view environmental factors as having major influence on future operations and efforts to design for environmental safety are becoming almost as important as the processes themselves. Throughout the industry there has been a further focussing on project management, recognizing the necessity for tight control of budgets and schedules-and the systems used to effect them. Many modern export terminals are now in construction while others have either been held up or cancelled. Economics and environmental permits have been some of the major problems. Currently under construction are terminals in Newport News, VA; Charleston, SC; and Baltimore, MD. Expansion of existing facilities at Mobile, AL, and New Orleans, LA, is also well under way. A wide variety of systems and components are being used. They include traveling shiploaders, tunnel and bucket wheel reclaim¬ers, stackers and high line trippers, and bottom and side dump-type car dumpers. Asbestos is a generic term for industrially useful fibers recovered from exploitable deposits of the asbestiform varieties of five silicate minerals: chrysotile, anthophyl-lite, actinolite-tremolite, cummingtorute-grunerite, and rie-beekite. Asbestos and asbestiform fibers of some other minerals are known to be carcinogenic. Minerals crystallized in the asbestiform habit-are characterized by unique properties (morphology, strength and flexibility, physical and chemical durability, and defect-free surface structures). The key to the unusual properties, and health effects, of asbestiform fibers appears to be in their unusual surface structure. In contrast, non-asbestiform crystals of the same minerals, including the five so called asbestos minerals, do not have these properties and are not carcinogenic.

The velocity of detonation (VOD) is a significant property considered when rating an explosive. It may be quantified as a confined or unconfined velocity. The confined velocity is the rate at which the detonation wave propagates through an explosive within a blast hole or any restrained space. The unconfined velocity emanates when an explosive is detonated in the open. However, the confined velocity is more significant as explosives are usually employed under a definite degree of confinement. This paper evaluates the increment of air deck volume and its effect on the VOD. The air gap (air deck) volume is increased stepwise from 10 to 30% of the total blast hole volume by reducing the stemming height in the collar zone. Thereafter, the VOD estimation in the 172-mm-diameter explosive column is conducted using the Dáutriche technique. It is observed that the VOD reduced with the increasing air deck volume and detonation failure is high when 30% of the blast hole volume is replaced with air deck. It is deduced that the increment of the air deck volume has an effect on the attenuation of the steady-state VOD.

INTRODUCTION Since several years the author is engaged in research activities in the field of mining method modelling (Oberndorfer, 1993 and 1994). The initial goal was to improve and assist the selection of the most appropriate mining method. However during investigations it became obvious that the most beneficial application of computer support is the fast calculation of numerical assessment rather than the consideration of all, i.e. also qualitative, criterions necessary for final decision. Numerical results serve - together with qualitative considerations based on the experience of the mining engineer - as a basis for decision. The emphasis is on "fast" calculation, as only this property makes it possible to calculate and compare many distinct variations. As long as no procedure exists, which optimizes all involved parameters, calculating many variations is of great important, because it is the only way to increase the chance to pick a alternative "close to optimum", but also to learn about the sensitivity the result will react on changes of input parameters, which are rarely known exactly. Generally speaking many trials give a better basis for final decision. It is no secrete that the most important obstacle towards quick calculations of a series of alternatives is not the processing time of the computer, but the time required for setting the input data in way that the computer can start processing, which is usually inter- active man work on the screen. Furthermore usually several distinct programs are required to cover the whole range of involved problems, with corresponding problems in automatic data transfer. The research work's goal was to overcome these problems. The approach developed was to describe a mining method more in a theoretical way (i.e. to give the computer some degree of "consciousness" on mining methods), which then can be applied under any specific conditions. E.g. a cut-and-fill operation will be "generally" the same in narrow or thick deposit areas, but the resulting keyfigures, e.g. total tonnage, productivity, dilution and loss, or finally costs per ton, will differ significantly. The approach (MMM = mining method modelling) presented reflects a deduction from the general case to a specific one (rather than the other way round). The developed model is general enough to be applicable to any mining method, and also to any degree of precision the mining method should be described, contrary to programs designed for specific mining method layouts which can be adjusted in a more or less wide range. PROGRAM DEVELOPMENT The principle correctness and feasibility of the approach was proved by a prototype program. However this program was more on a research level and far away from application for "real world" problems. The reason for this was, that it was regarded wasted time to re-invent certain tools, e.g. geometry intersection, deposit modelling or visualization. Hence it was tried to attract several software producers to invest in finalizing the model. Unfortunately this endeavor was not successful. Despite this defeat - and after some months of resignation - a final start on the project was decided. he reason for this decision was not at last the research activity in respect of low-cost underground mining methods for bulk- material as a substitute of typical quarry operations due to environmental restriction. This research work - which is in particular important for Austrian mining activities in beautiful and touristically used landscape - requires a lot of calculations in the way described. Both are still in state of progress, but - regarding mining method modelling - preliminary results can be presented. A complete re-programming of the program was required. Most obvious are the changes of programming language and operating system environment. Instead of Pascal under DOS C++ under MS-WindowsNT is now used. Several problems could be solved by this, in particular memory management, device drivers for input/output, and user friendlyness by up-to-date windows technology. However also more basic structures were changed. The idea was to utilize as many existing commercially available programs as possible to minimize programming efforts. This paper reviews the fundamental concepts involved in the development, application and validation of ground movement predic¬tion methods developed by Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (VPI&SU) over the past 12 years. Prediction techniques have included empirical or semi-empirical methods, such as the profile function, influence function and zone area methods, as well as numerical methods, based on a finite element formulation which utilizes field subsidence data. The former techniques have been integrated in the Surface Deformation Prediction System (SDPS) software package for personal computers, which allows for the calculation of any component of ground movement in any direction. Comparisons between measured and predicted subsidence and strain values are presented for a selection of case studies, which demonstrate the applicability, accuracy and regional validity of these methods for predicting surface deformations due to underground mining.

Under its program of advancing minerals technology, the Federal Bureau of Mines has developed a laboratory apparatus for continuous separation of minerals according to their dielectric properties. The unit consists of a rotating wire grid drum electrode and a fixed curved wire screen electrode positioned 3 mm apart. By applying high voltage across the electrodes, which are immersed in a dielectric fluid medium, a high-gradient electric field is produced. The high-dielectric-constant minerals are attracted and conveyed through the separator by the rotating drum electrode, whereas the low-dielectric-constant minerals settle through the fixed electrode. In typical tests, a sample of Montana chromite ore containing 43 percent chromite was concentrated to 72 percent chromite with 90 percent recovery.

In the southern part ?f the Occidental Carpathians an iron ore body embedded in crystalline schist was exploited. The presence of minerals such as magnetite, pyrite, pyro-chorine, allanite, monazite and xenotime, which also include within their structure substituted thorium isomorphic, was pointed out. The iron ore was processed by crushing, grinding and magnetic separation in order to obtain magnetite concentrates. The environment was affected by pollution generated by the mining activities. In 1995 due to the economic reasons, it was decided to cease mining exploitation and remediate the area. The paper presents the ecological impact caused by mining activities on a number of environmental targets and the population. The pollution sources, namely sterile dumps and mine waters are characterized (from the physical, chemical and radiometric point of view); the pollution pathways and theirs effects on potential targets, namely soil, vegetation, hydrographic network and population are identified as well. The degree of pollution due to all sources was assessed and maps of pollution sources distribution were generated. The supplementary effective doses for the population were assessed using rigorous scenarios and considering all exposure pathways. The rehabilitation plan includes solutions for dumps geometrization, covering and revegetation as well as mine waters management.

Introduction The Mineral Resources Institute, The University of Alabama, has for the past three years been engaged in a program to develop a beneficiation system for eastern (Devonian) oil shales. One objective of that program was to evaluate advanced technologies for effecting a kerogen-mineral matter separation. Column flotation was among the advanced technologies selected for evaluation. Early in the program it was shown that column flotation was superior to conventional (mechanical) flotation and to the other advanced technologies being evaluated. The investigation then proceeded toward the further objective of defining the optimum operating conditions for column flotation. One observation made in the course of optimization testing was that introducing the feed into the froth (above the pulp-froth interface) resulted in an improved combination of concentrate grade and kerogen recovery. This observation was reported in a previous paper (Schultz and Bates, 1989). Because the practice of maintaining the pulp froth interface below the feed point is contrary to "conventional" practice, it was decided to subject the observation to a systematic series of tests. This paper describes a recent series of tests and the results that were obtained.

Understanding sources of dissolved metals and transport characteristics of acid drainage is needed to assist land-use strategies in mineralized regions, particularly in the semi-arid southwestern United States. Water- quality samples were collected from mined and un-mined parts of the Patagonia and southern Santa Rita Mountains of southern Arizona from streams, springs, seeps, adits, alluvial wells, and bedrock wells. Water quality during base-flow conditions was compared with that *of runoff samples from infrequent winter and summer storms. The largest fraction of annual discharge in these ephemeral streams consists of storm runoff, although springs provide a steady source of low discharge base flow to numerous intermittent perennial reaches. Several abandoned mines in the northern Patagonia Mountains contribute acid and heavy metals to streams. During base-flow conditions in mineralized areas, natural springs and intermittent stream reaches produce acidity but the volume is typically low and acidity is often diluted or neutralized down gradient. Overland runoff contains low concentrations of dissolved metals and moderate acidity, however, stream waters were strongly acidified and metal-laden from contact with abundant pyrite-bearing stream sediments derived from erosion of waste-rock material in and along the sides of the stream channel.

Shale formations are the Nemesis of the Mining Engineer. Shales react to changes in environment in the most unusual and unpredictable manner. Increase in temperature may cause spalling, increase moisture and compression induced fractures may occur, and if a full face is exposed it may deteriorate due to atmospheric exposure. Combine only small amounts of shale in layered fashion with hard brittle competent rock and the whole structure may be fractured and fail due to stresses generated in and around the shale. In this paper the author will discuss failure mechanisms encountered under various field conditions and remedial action which may be employed by the engineer.

Methane drainage methods can be broadly classified as surface or underground. Surface methods make use of vertical and slant holes. The underground method discussed in the present paper involves horizontal drilling from shaft bottoms and from locations along the periphery of mines. Every foot of hole drilled in coal from under- ground locations is productive and gas flows increase as hole length increases. Therefore, underground techniques have a great potential for producing large-volume flows of methane. Pumps to dewater the horizontal holes are not necessary because gas pressure forces the water out of the hole. Methane can be recovered through the use of a simple and inexpensive gas-water separator. Hydraulic fracturing, which has been used successfully to stimulate gas flows from vertical holes, has not proved practical in the case of horizontal holes.

Single-charge cratering tests can provide a direct measure of the powder factor necessary for achieving a desired effect in conventional blasting. If a desired blast effect, such as fragmentation or mound velocity, is produced by a single point-charge at a particular scaled depth of burial, then the cube of the reciprocal of that scaled depth is the appropriate powder factor for duplicating the effect in a conventional array of blast holes. Gold was discovered at the Haile mine in Lancaster County, South Carolina in 1827 or 1828, and since that time the mine has been worked intermittently by both open pit and underground methods until its forced closure in 1942 by World War II. Production figures are incomplete, especially for the early years, but the total gold produced is estimated to have been greater than 200,000 ounces. Thus, the Haile mine has been the most productive gold mine in the eastern United States. The upper, residually enriched ores were relatively rich, but the bulk of the production has come from the mining of lower grade ores.

The purpose of this paper is to make a comparative cost analysis of domestic and foreign exploration projects which developed into mines during the 1960-1974 time period. A total of 18 mining companies, American and Canadian, were approached to solicit cost data on domestic and foreign exploration projects which developed into mines. Only 20 percent of the companies to which questionnaires were sent made data available. Several companies answered negatively, informing us that they would have difficulty in attempting to sort our costs. Some companies were usable to release cost details. It is comforting, however, to realize that some of the non-contributing companies expressed eagerness to hear the findings of this paper. Inasmuch as the data available on exploration expenditures is, in some cases, somewhat uncertain and that no two mining companies follow the same system of cost allocations, the results obtained in this analysis should he interpreted as trends of a general character.

Numbers, arithmetic, mathematics. Where did it all come from? Who needs it? We all do, but many school children would not agree. Engineers, physicists, accountants, tax collectors, and most of the general public are well aware that modern society in large part is founded on mathematics and could not exist without it. Mathematics developed over thousands of years as part of the everyday life of man. No one area, tribe, or race can claim discovery. In fact, from the records that do exist, it is evident that many facets of mathematics were discovered independently of others who made similar discoveries. While proof may be lacking, the earliest concepts of mathematics may be some 250,000 to 300,000 years old. The first use of numbers as written records is unknown. However, a bone of a young wolf deeply cut with 55 notches-arranged in two rows, one of 25 notches, the other of 30-was found in Czechoslovakia. Dated to be about 30,000 years old, it is perhaps an early record of some kind of counting system. It is assumed that mathematics was developed as an answer to man's practical needs, but anthropological studies suggest that the art of counting may have developed in connection with the needs of primitive religious ceremonial rites. Fingers probably were first used to designate sets of from one to five objects. Using both hands, up to 10 items could be indicated. As civilization developed, so did the need for more flexible systems to record items of trade, measure land, and figure taxes. Aristotle noted that the development of the decimal system comes from the fact that most people are born with 10 fingers and 10 toes. In spite of this obvious fact many early civilizations used binary, ternary, and quinary systems while vigesimal systems (with 20 as a base) and even sexagesimal systems (with 60 as a base) were used by others. A form of writing was in use in both the Mesopotamian and Nile valleys as early as 3000 to 4500 B.C. In Mesopotamia, wedge-shaped marks were impressed upon soft clay tablets that were hardened in ovens or by the sun. Many thousands of such tablets have survived. When the tablets were finally deciphered, some were found to be records of items shipped in trade, inventories, tax accounts, and mathematics exercises for teaching. Mesopotamia is also the source of an interesting board game dating back to about 2500 B.C. Its buttonlike men and triangular dice were apparently used with squares of shell, inlaid with lapis lazuli and red sandstone. Unfortunately, rules of play were not found. In Egypt, record preservation was somewhat better. Discovery of the Rosetta Stone in 1799 eventually led to deciphering the Egyptian hieroglyphics that included a numbering system at least 5,000 years old. These records show a competence in counting and numbering. A calendar of good accuracy may have been in existence as early as 4,200 years ago. Water is the mainstay for beneficiation of fine size coal and minerals; however, it is also the least desirable constituent in the final product. The basic concept of the novel process described in this paper is based on the differential surface heat absorption capacity of individual particles, which differs for different species of mineral. When a mixture of fine material is exposed to a radiant energy source, the various solids components present in the mixture will absorb heat energy depending on their composition and there will be difference in the surface temperature of the particles. When this differentially heated solid mixture is placed on a moving belt, which is coated with low temperature melting resin, the hotter component of the mixture will stick to the belt and relatively cooler will stay free on the belt and fall off at the end of the belt run. Experiments were conducted with pyrite, coal and quartz of 6 x18 mesh particle size. The goal of the test program was to find the optimum conditions at which there exists a required temperature difference between minerals and coal particles by controlling the operating and system variables. Preliminary tests results showed that there is a potential for separating mineral matter from coal using the thermo-adhesive separation technique.

Sulphide mineral flotation is known to be affected by oxidation-reduction conditions in the pulp, although there is some doubt as to whether it is the oxidizing environment or the type of oxidant which influences flotation. Variations in the oxidizing conditions of the pulp and their subsequent effect on flotation were examined for two types of natural sulphide ore, a galenasphalerite ore and a complex pyrite ore. Different gas mixtures ranging from pure nitrogen to pure oxygen were used to control the oxidizing conditions. Zinc recovery increased with a more oxidizing environment, and nitrogen gas acted almost as a depressant for sphalerite in the flotation of the Pb-Zn ore. For the complex pyrite ore, the selectivity between chalcopyrite and both gangue and pyrite improved when the environment was oxidizing, resulting in higher Cu recovery in the copper rougher concentrate. The use of an oxygen rich flotation gas was found to be a suitable method for changing the oxidizing conditions and improving flotation under controlled conditions. The flotation results were correlated to the oxygen content and the redox potential, parameters which describe the pulp chemistry conditions.

Large reserves of copper are contained in waste dumps which have been created by open-pit mining of porphyry-type copper deposits in the Western United States. Nearly 6 billion tons of copper-bearing material exists in the waste dumps at present, and another billion tons will be added each three to four years as additional material is stripped from the present mines and new open-pit mines are developed. The dumps constitute an enormous resource containing some 7 to 10 billion dollars worth of copper. Increased attention is being given to the recovery of copper by leaching from these dumps as attested by the fact that in 1968 approximately $175 million of copper was recovered by leaching operations. During the leaching process, however, numerous problems exist which prevent complete extraction of the copper from the dumps. Probably the most important problem encountered is the incomplete contact of the copper-bearing materials by the leaching solutions. This problem is mainly created by the formation of physically compacted and chemically cemented layers within the dumps which prevent solution flow to many sections of the interior of the dumps.

Studies of sulfidization and flotation of chrysocolla involving the use of pH and sulfide ion instruments, a Zeta meter, microflotation techniques, and sensitive determinations of adsorbed sulfur have given new insight into the mechanism of the process. Factors that affect the recovery of sulfidized chrysocolla by flotation appear to be the pH at which it is sulfidized, and certain alterations of the surface that occur during aging after sulfidization. Such aging results in increased recoveries. The surface charge, as measured by electrophoretic mobility, of chrysocolla shows an unexpected negative increase as pH values are changed from 6.0 to about 4.5, and this appears to be correlated with increasing sulfur adsorption and flotation recovery over the same or even wider pH ranges.
