Preliminary results of a mineralogical, geo-chemical and nutrient analysis of soil samples collected from Omalos polje-plateau are presented. This study is part of a project concerning the relationship of lithology and mineralogy characteristics of soils of different geological origin from the island of Crete with their chemical composition, and more specifically with their ionic nutrients content. The results presented in this work show a relatively good correlation of the mineralogy and the bulk content of the soils examined with the available nutrients in soil solution.

The problems of geological exploration are discussed on the basis of computerized modeling of, complex orebodies, as well as the task of data authenticity evaluation. The theoretical baseof modeling is solving the problem of determining the parametres of orebodies sizes distribution along random intersections by exploratory workings. The relationship is established between univariate distribution moments in the intersections and the moments of the orebodies sizes distribution in three dimentions. It is suggested to use the obtained results for compyter modeling of the orebodies accumulations and for imitation modeling of their exploration. The computer experiments with the models make it possible to establish the optimum parametres of exploration networls.

Computers have been used in the minerals industry for about 30 years and, in a few cases, longer. With the explosion of microcomputing during the past 10 years, computers have changed how many minerals producers go about their work. What computer usage trends are active in the minerals industry today, and what can we expect in the future? In general, computer usage is accelerating. Engineers and geologists are becoming increasingly "application literate." Soft¬ware is increasingly oriented to how people work. User interfaces have improved, so most users need to know only a mini¬mum of system commands and structure to work with a computer. Most industry professionals know how to use word processing and spreadsheet pro¬grams. AutoCAD appears to be the drawing program of choice. One reason is availability of training and add-on programs for earthwork, mapping, contouring, etc. Another frequently cited reason for using CAD is the ability to quickly make changes to a map or design, as compared to hand methods. Management is moving toward greater acceptance of computer usage. Computers do not need workman's compensation ... even though they may get sick and take a few days off! Computer hardware used in most minerals-producing companies is strongly personal-computer based and likely to remain so. The 486 personal computers are inexpensive as compared to workstations and provide the power and speed to run most applications in minerals industry engineering offices.

Iron and steel built the Industrial Revolution/copper electrified the world/coal tars and petroleum and gas feedstocks developed the organic chemical industry. Industrial minerals now carry forward this tradition. Two, of hundreds of examples of hi-tech industrial minerals are quartz crystal and rare earths. Both demonstrate the international market aspects of mining, processing and finished product trade.

A comprehensive survey of minefill practices in underground mines in Canada has been conducted. The survey was designed to cover the entire filling operation for individual mines from feed to the preparation plant, to underground transportation, and to stope placement. The questionnaire examined such areas as mining method utilized, the purpose of backfilling, backfill formulations, including binding and chemical additives, slurry properties, transportation parameters, stope preparation procedures, backfill placement properties, fill instrumentation, and costs. This paper presents the current state of backfill usage in Canada, identifies trends in minefill practices and provides mine operators with an updated database to compare their own practices with modern trends throughout the industry.

Sedimentary phosphate ores are known for their relatively high specific surface area and porosity, which have a positive influence on their reactivity when used as fertilizer in acidic soils or in the manufacture of wet phosphoric acid and phosphatic fertilizers. However, these physical properties could have a negative effect on the behavior of these ores if dried. This effect has been studied on several phosphate ores samples by: the determination of mineralogical and textural properties of these samples, the determination of vapor water sorption isotherms, at different temperatures, from which the sorption heat has been calculated, carrying out several drying tests using a laboratory fluidized bed reactor under constant conditions, which showed important differences in drying rates and residual moistures.

Mines in the Lake Macquarie region of New South Wales, Australia, are faced with the dilemma of having to introduce longwall mining techniques at a time when increasingly large areas of the surface are being used for urban development. Increasing pressures on safety, costs and productivity performance dictate that longwall mining is the method for the future. Construction of surface structures is controlled by a statutory body known as the Mine Subsidence Board (MSB). All surface structures have to be designed to MSB criteria. All mining plans involving secondary excavation also have to be submitted to the MSB for approval. The Board acts as risk assessor in evaluating acceptable levels of surface subsidence vs. the value of the coal resource. Surface repairs are paid for by a levy on all coal producers.

In response to a request from the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA), the US Bureau of Mines completed a respirable dust survey of 18 US coal preparation plants. Of these, three were essentially free of dust problems. Respirable dust exposure to workers in the remaining plants depended on the time spent in the dusty areas. In five of the plants surveyed, Bureau tests showed that in some areas worker exposures could exceed Federal dust limits in less than two hours. Cooperative studies were arranged with coal preparation plants using three different dust control techniques. These included a standard baghouse-type dust collector, two types of scrubbers, and an electrostatic precipitator. Results of these evaluations are presented. Various types of ventilation systems used during summer and winter conditions were also evaluated. Results showed that appropriate ventilation can provide a highly cost-effective method for controlling coal preparation plant dust.

Geologic structures in mine roof rock contribute to many roof falls in Appalachian coal mines. These structures include paleochannels, scours, pinch-outs, slickensides, clay veins, and cravasse splays consisting of thinly interlaminated sandstone and shale. These structures often can be identified during, and sometimes before, development and mine projections can be revised to reduce the adverse effects of discontinuities in roof structure. Large areas of roof consisting of laminated sandstones or incompetent strata generally can be delineated from exploratory drill-hole data and the need for supplementary support can be anticipated. Because an accurate description of roof geology also provides some indication of optimum length and type of roof bolts that should be installed, this Bureau of Mines paper describes the hazardous roof structures most commonly encountered in the Appalachian coal region.

Since the discovery of uranium in the Ambrosia Lake Area in 1955, a new mining district has developed which promises to be the greatest uranium producing area in the United States. Exploration and development work is proceeding rapidly in mines operated by Kermac Nuclear Fuels Corporation, Phillips Petroleum Company, Rio De Oro Uranium Mines, Inc., Calumet & Hecla, Inc., Rare. Metals Corporation, Homestake-Sapin Partners, Homestake-New Mexico Partners, and Centennial Development Company. Individual mining operations vary in size from 200 tons to more than 1200 tons per day with production from wet and dry ore bodies ranging in depth from 300 to 1500 feet. Many problems have been encountered during the development period in the district mines. Within this paper the author will review some of these problems and mining practices being used. In order to understand better the developments to date, a brief description of the area and its geologic setting will be presented.

Perceived environmental impacts from flotation reagents used in the phosphate industry have been of concern for nearly a decade. A research program was initiated to determine the distribution, fate, and consequences of flotation reagents (fatty acids, fuel oils, and amines) within the environment. Therefore, laboratory investigations of biodegradation and soil attenuation of the reagents were conducted along with field flotation mass balances and groundwater investigations in clay settling, sand tailings, and undisturbed areas. Sample analysis and a reagent mass-balance model indicated that most reagents are distributed in clay settling and sand tailings areas. Groundwater analyses showed no fatty acids or amines in any of 19 surficial or intermediate aquifer water samples. In contrast, fuel oils were detected in the surficial aquifer at all sand tailings areas in concentrations ranging between 8.5 and 0.5 mg/L. Fuel oil was also detected in trace amounts (0.6 mg/L) in one intermediate aquifer well located in an active sand tailings area. All fuel oil concentrations detected were very low and, coupled with a biodegradation rate of approximately 10% per month, all concentrations should be within reference levels in six months. Based upon the results of this study, use of flotation reagents in the beneficiation process of the Florida phosphate industry present no long-term threat to the environment.

Deep tillage is widely used as a means of alleviating excessive soil compaction. There has been some concern that the voids created by deep tillage may collapse before a more natural soil structure develops, resulting in recompaction subsequent to deep tillage A laboratory investigation was conducted to determine the feasibility of pneumatically injecting organic material into the voids produced during deep tillage in order to prevent any significant recompaction from occurring. Various amendments were injected into the soil during laboratory tests using a small-scale ripping and injection system. Measurements were made of selected soil proper Pies to evaluate the feasibility of this method.

Land reclamation and rehabilitation of depleted coal mines in the wider area of Ptolemais-Amynteon is practiced by the Division of Mines of the Public Power Corporation of Greece in order to conform to the concept of environmentally sustainable economic development of its operations. Detailed chemical and mineralogical studies were performed on reclaimed soils and their crops in order to evaluate the results of land reclamation and rehabilitation while similar studies were undertaken in adjacent, regularly cultivated, soils. Results indicate that trace element concentrations as well as concentrations of elements of environmental concern to be higher in regularly cultivated soils than the reclaimed ones. However, the concentration of the elements in wheat grains harvested from both, regular and reclaimed, group of soils is the same. The reason for this behavior is the very low water solubility, of the elements in the soils, due to their high pH values and the nature of their occurrence. As a result, wheat crops produced from reclaimed-rehabilitated soils developed on depleted lignite mines in the wider area of Ptolemais-Amynteon do not pose any health problem on either humans or animals when consumed.

The need for improved safety and productivity brought about the introduction of longwall mining to the Appalachian coal fields. These same forces continue to drive developments in modern longwall equipment and mining practices. Current initiatives to improve productivity and safety are focused on automation and the effects of scale in equipment design. Longwall roof-supports, shearers and face-conveyors have changed significantly. Panel layouts have evolved to include larger total tonnages and provide for more rapid development of gate-entries. These advancements have improved longwall productivity and new production records are continually being set. Roof supports Reliability is implicit in the quest for automation. It is impossible to automate equipment if it is not reliable. To a large degree, this has been the problem with longwall shield automation efforts. The "electronic control" of shields depends on the proper functioning of electronic equipment, electrohydraulic valves and full-flow service valves onboard every support.

INTRODUCTION The need for discussion of Owner-Engineer-Contractor relationships in tunneling arises from the increase in costly and time-consuming litigation. The paper examines the objectives, motivations and responsibilities of each party, discusses some common causes of claims in underground work, and makes some suggestions for improvements. The viewpoint and bias are those of an engineer. If a subtitle were required for the session, "Sharing the Risk" would be appropriate. Sharing the risk is an important aspect of Owner-Engineer-Contractor relationships because when a risk is shared, all parties have an incentive to minimize it. The System It would be shortsighted not to recognize that the system is wider than the Owner, the Engineer and the Contractor. After a discussion of the principles of heavy-mineral enrichment and the sedimentary history of shelf sediments, four models are described that can explain the genesis of heavy-mineral deposits in shelf areas. On the basis of these models, the heavy-mineral potential of most shelf areas is estimated to he significantly lower than the potential of their neighboring coastal plains.

A bench-top centrifuge was used to study the consolidation behavior of phosphatic clays. A mathematical model (based on, first-order kinetics) was developed to describe the relationship between the void ratio (at any time) and the effective stress. The permeability of the sediment as a function of the void ratio is also described. The results of this analysis are then compared to data obtained by other consolidation testing methods. The centrifuge results indicate that consolidation data may be developed in a short period of time (hours) as compared to days or weeks when other techniques are used.

INTRODUCTION The Bureau of Reclamation is conducting a research program to investigate, develop, and test polymer-impregnated concrete tunnel support and lining systems for gravity flow, circular cross-section water conveyance tunnels. This system consists of segmented precast rings, backfilled with concrete. Polymer-impregnated concrete is conventional precast concrete which has been impregnated with a liquid monomer. The liquid monomer is subsequently converted to a polymer by thermal-catalytic or radiation methods. The polymer is a solid plastic which fills voids and microfractures within the concrete, resulting in greatly improved strength and modulus of elasticity and reduced permeability, which in turn increases the durability of the concrete. The immediate goals of the program are to develop techniques for the fabrication of precast concrete segments, test single segments to determine physical and mechanical properties, assemble the segments into a support and lining system, load and test the full-scale system, evaluate specific applications, and develop design criteria and construction procedures. English China Clays, the world's largest producer of China Clay, has its main production capacity in the South-West of England, where a complex of pits, refining plants, dryers and ports covers an area of approximately 100 square kilometres. The possibility of a computerised information network was first considered in 1980. The system was required to provide information at the central level and also at local plant level to improve co-ordination and control. Immediate access by any authorised user, and flexibility of interrogation were important aims. A small micro-based prototype system was implemented in 1981, and later that year development of the mainframe system commenced. This latter system will provide at least one terminal in every works location and will allow inter-communication of laboratory test data as well as detailed stock levels and production data. An integrated system for order processing will allow stock levels to be monitored in relation to anticipated requirements. The system has been developed by the Data Processing Department using the IDMS database package running on an ICL ME29 mainframe. It was decided to use microcomputers as terminals, which although more complicated because of protocol emulation allows stand-alone applications to be run on the same equipment. Those applications concerning Production Planning are outlined in the paper. Communication on the network is by synchronous transmission over dedicated lines. All data is stored on the central database with terminals accessing it in a star configuration. The system is currently partially implemented with 30 available screens at 18 separate worksites.

Ore reserve estimation is a multi- disciplinary process involving not only tonnage and grade estimation (resource estimation), but also consideration of technical and legal aspects such as mining the deposit, beneficiating the ores, and selling the product. This paper provides a background to under- standing resource estimation including geologic modelling, manual estimation methods, conventional computer methods. and geostatistical methods. Mine planning, metallurgical studies, legal/environmental, and marketing considerations are also discussed as they relate to estimating ore reserves.
