The possibility of beneficiating a low-grade alunite ore from the Tuscany region of Italy was examined. Flocculation and flotation techniques were investigated to separate alunite and kaolinite from the ore, which also contained feldspar and quartz. Flotation was performed at pH 6.5 with oleic acid as collector and sodium silicate as dispersant. A concentrate containing 12% alunite with a recovery of about 65% and a concentrate containing 28% alunite with a recovery of 84% were achieved from the -38-µm feed samples containing 5.0% and 12.9% alunite, respectively. Poor recovery of alunite was achieved by flocculation methods.

Introduction The recovery of precious metals from ore can generally be accomplished using either gravity concentration, flotation, and/or hydrometallurgical (leaching) techniques. The objective of this paper is to show why gravity concentration can be an important part of recovery systems which employ leaching as the primary unit operation. A brief discussion of modern gravity concentration equipment is also presented.

Boliden has a long history of close cooperation with Swedish and foreign manufacturers in developing new products and processes.

The growth of networks of shear fractures is explored in a series of experiments with samples of wet clay. The samples are subjected to plane strain deformation in a rigid apparatus. The individual fractures observed on the upper surface of the clay samples grow longer by three mechanisms: in-plane propagation, off-plane propagation and coalescence. New, active fractures cut and displace older, less active ones. The lengths of individual fractures display lognormal distribution in most cases and power distribution in fewer. The calculated length parameters in the experiments, as well as in three field cases discussed here, suggest that the fundamental parameters in fracture analysis are the normalized cumulative length and the length of the shortest fracture measured.

Within the world of mining health and safety, increasing attention is again being given to underground fires and explosions. This paper reviews the effects of open fires in mine entries on the ventilation system, and outlines current methodologies of attempting to control such a fire. The particular hazards of a fuel-rich fire are discussed. There appear to have been no really significant advances made in methods of extinguishing mine entry fires in the last several decades. The final section of the paper introduces research that is investigating the simultaneous production of an inerting, cooling and quenching atmosphere by means of a dense water fog.

Principal Components Analysis (PCA) is a versatile, multivariate statistical method that the Bureau of Mines is applying to mineral processing data to achieve data simplification and pattern recognition. The principal components are obtained from an eigenanalysis of the data matrix. To achieve data simplification PCA replaces a larger number of measured variables with a smaller set of principal components and at the same time removes a significant amount of experimental error. Data simplification and error reduction make PCA useful in process control. Plots of the individual principal components form the basis of a pattern recognition technique that allows detection of significant variations in the structure of the data. These applications of PCA are illustrated with appropriate mineral processing data.

While surety capacity for the mining industry continues to shrink, States are demanding greater financial certainty for closure/post closure obligations. To combat these demands, larger mining companies are pursuing a Mining Surety Reinsurance Program that requires a significant up front capital contribution. This paper outlines an alter-native program for middle market mining organizations. The program utilizes a “Blended Finite Risk” environmental insurance solution with surety acting as the “front” in states where insurance is not an acceptable form of collateral. Marsh proposes creating separate programs for each State requiring surety. The reason for separate programs stems from each states’ different surety rules. Insurance companies typically require at least $5 million in future value remediation liabilities for finite risk programs. Since most middle market mining companies have obligations that fall below this threshold, the Blended Finite Risk Program contemplates combining several companies closure/post closure liabilities to accomplish the minimum amount required by the insurance company. Why use a Blended Finite Risk Program? One of the primary benefits is the financial assurance that funds will be available for planned remediation. For example, the financial assurance may be required by a government agency. The certainty may help facilitate a merger or acquisition. Additionally, the funds may be part of a CER-CLA PRP settlement. In all cases, the insurer providing coverage would be a secure independent 3rd party. A Blended Finite Risk Program also provides a long-term solution – up to 30 years and in some select cases longer. The benefit to a state or the BLM is the removal of financial uncertainty. An insurance company writing the policy would have an AA or AAA balance sheet. The hardening of surety markets coupled with the tightening of financial assurance requirements in many states have necessitated the posting of 100% collateral. This program substantially reduces these collateral requirements.

Environmental pressures on waste disposal are forcing pigment producers to use feedstocks with higher Ti02 content and lower levels of trace elements. Despite this, 50% of the world's Ti02 comes from ilmenite concentrates with only 37% to 54% Ti02. An industry growth rate of 25% in the next 10 years, combined with trends to diminishing resources and lower mining grades for rutile (95% P02) and leucoxenized ilmenite (55% to 90% P02), means that unless new discoveries are made soon, the industry will become even more reliant on ilmenite.

A considerable economic and technical knowledge base has been amassed with the successful and sustained operation of commercial minerals bioleaching/biooxidation plants to extract copper from chalcocite ore and enhance precious metal recovery from sulfidic refractory ores and concentrates. Economic evaluation ofbio-processing must consider the value of the ore, the sulfide-sulfur requiring oxidation to achieve significant metal recovery, the time required for the biological process and, in the case of precious metal feed-stocks, the down-stream reagent consumption. Of these considerations oxygen requirement for the biologically-catalyzed oxidation of sulfide minerals is the prevailing determinant in the capital and operating costs of aerated, stirred-tank reactors for processing concentrates and bio-heaps for processing ores. Oxygen requirement is dictated by the amount of sulfide-sulfur requiring oxidation to achieve desired metal recovery. The testwork program to evaluate a project for application of biooxidation/bioleaching must be designed to insure that factors critical to economic assessment are fully quantified.

Shotcrete is widely accepted as an indispensable form of ground control around the world. Other Surface Support Liners such as mesh have been around as long as shotcrete while other Thin Support Liners (TSLs) have been introduced in recent decades. TSLs, however, have yet to replace shotcrete in many applications believed to be “perfect” for them. On the other hand, some recently introduced technologies may be on the brink of meeting most surface rock support requirements economically and safely. This paper will discuss rockfall statistics, small rockfall prevention and compare different surface support liners such as mesh, shotcrete and TSLs. Additionally, a shaft sinking TSL application example will be presented.

Estimating the Iron Ore reserves of Minnesota are directly related to both the geology of the deposit and the Scandinavian heritage of its people. The flat lying deposits, when properly prospected, make estimating easy and accurate across wide areas of the Mesabi Range. It also makes taxation simple on the unmined reserves. The reserves are their heritage and all the people should benefit, not just the owners. Heritage also dictates that newly discovered ores were there before discovery, hence, subject to the omitted property tax and liable for six years back taxes.

The federal standard for limiting exposures to miners from radon daughters was reduced from 12 working level months (WLM) per year to 4 WLM per year in 1971. However, even at that time some researchers were concerned that the new limit would eventually be shown to result in an excess risk for lung cancer mortality in miners. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is now engaged in a comprehensive review of this topic. As the lead agency in this project, NIOSH has developed a work plan and established a work group to implement this plan. The procedure and specific considerations are outlined in the work plan for developing a comprehensive ionizing radiation standard recommendation for all miners, underground and surface. Such a recommendation will not only include estimates of health risks at various levels of exposure, but also appropriate recommendations for medical monitoring, sampling and analytical methods, sampling strategies, posting, engineering controls, personal protective equipment and recordkeeping. The work group has twenty-four members. Eleven members are NIOSH personnel representing six divisions of the Institute. The remaining thirteen members represent other federal agencies, specifically the Bureau of Mines of the Department of the Interior, the Mine Safety and Health Administration and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration of the Department of Labor, the Office of Radiation Protection of the Environmental Protection Agency, and the Bureau of Radiological Health of the Food and Drug Administration, Department of Health and Human Services. Several factors contributed to the decision to initiate this project. First, the efficacy of the current standard was considered. An initial study group was formed in the spring of 1980 by NIOSH to identify and evaluate articles that contained information on lung cancer mortality risks at and below the present permissible exposure limit. The conclusion drawn from their evaluation was that a two-fold excess risk of lung cancer mortality at and below 120 cumulative working level months (CWLM) of exposure to radon daughters is evident. This composite indication from selected studies was of sufficient magnitude to justify further evaluation. The study group, however, recognized that other studies and information must also be considered in a quantitative risk assessment which would form the basis for recommending an acceptable and feasible permissible exposure limit. A second factor in the decision to pursue further evaluation was the gaps in the current standard that had previously been identified by the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA). These included lack of medical monitoring of underground miners and absence of regulations for surface miners. The seriousness of the health hazard relative to other hazards in mining was also considered. Along with exposures to silica and asbestos fibers, radiation was judged to be one of the major health hazards in mining, These combined factors constituted the justification to develop criteria and recommendations for improved mandatory health standards. The development process begins with a survey and review of the available world-wide information on the topic, including data and information developed by NIOSH. The end product of this review is to be a document that will contain an evaluation of the collected information and support for any recommendations that are made. To develop this document, the present work group has been divided into five task groups with the following emphases: Health Effects, Medical Aspects, Monitoring, Environmental Exposures, and Engineering Controls and Work Practices. The Health Effects task group is to evaluate the evidence from epidemiologic and animal studies of adverse health effects associated with all forms of ionizing radiation encountered in mining and milling operations. The "weight-of-evidence" of the results of all relevant and useful studies will be summarized, with the reasons for emphasizing the cited studies. The critical cells or tissues and the factors that should be considered in estimating the dose to these areas from various types of radiation will be identified. An evaluation will be made of the possible impacts of smoking and exposure to diesel exhaust on the determination of health effects related to radiation. The implications of biologically redundant dose in terms of the time between tumor initiation and death will also be analyzed. The Medical Aspects task group is to review the generally-accepted and the state-of-the-art medical technology for the detection of adverse health effects from ionizing radiation exposure. An evaluation will be made of the accuracy of urine and fecal analysis, wholebody counting, chromosome analysis and nose blows, as well as their usefulness for early detection of adverse health effects. Early detection is of little utility to the affected individual unless subsequent medical care can improve the prognosis. Recommendations for screening tests will be made after carefully considering the accuracy of the diagnostic procedures and the usefulness of early detection. Required recordkeeping and transfer rights will also be addressed. The Monitoring task group is to consider the state-of-the-art technology for the monitoring of occupational radiation exposures. Instrumentation, sampling strategies and analytical procedures will be reviewed for both personal and area sampling. The implications of the associated levels of confidence for non-compliance decisions will be evaluated. The discussion will also include an evaluation of the feasibility of replacing present monitoring systems with recent technology and the impact that a possible lower permissible exposure limit would have on monitoring requirements. The Environmental Exposure task group is to investigate the field procedures and mathematical methodologies which have been used to quantitate exposure levels to the various kinds of ionizing radiation. The magnitude and direction of the possible biases in past exposure assessments will be estimated. Specific attention will be given to the controversies concerning the quantification of the biological dose equivalent and the feasibility of recommending standards for mixed radiation exposures which use "rem" as the unit of measurement. Gold prices are rising, in what is coming to be seen as the beginning of a longer term upward trend. After languishing between $325/oz and $364/ oz from early 1991 into early 1993, prices began rising in the first half of 1993. Gold rose from a low of $326/oz in March 1993 to $414/oz on an intraday basis in early August. There was a speculative sell-off at that point, which took gold prices quickly back down to $350/oz briefly in October 1993. At that time, there still was a fair degree of skepticism about gold's price prospects. Many banks believed that gold prices could not mount a sustained rally. As prices dropped in August and September of last year, these suspicions seemed to be confirmed. Gold prices quickly rebounded, however, reaching $395/oz by early January 1994. The strength of this renewed increase led many banks, investors and others that had held negative views of gold to grow more positive. They began buying gold and trading it from the long side of the market. The result was that gold prices remained strong during the first quarter of 1994, trading between $375/oz and $390/oz.

In order to study blast-induced dust in a hard rock metal mine experimentally and analytically, a part of a stope mined by Vertical Retreat Mining (VRM) was monitored throughout its lifetime. Dust measurements were used to describe the dust source, to study the dynamics of removal of airborne dust from the blasting area, and to examine a variation in dust production with a stope's progress. An analysis based on graphical and analytical comparisons of blasts taking place in a single stope is presented and discussed. Also, some transient phenomena of dust flow in the stope vicinity, caused by the blasts only, are examined.

Somebody sure gave me the wrong title. I can talk much more freely about the impact of the anti-nuclear movement on the DRILLING industry in New Mexico. In a word, it is being "clobbered." It doesn't seem like very long ago that my brothers and I were busy trying to find enough new equipment (and trying to talk bankers into lending us enough money) to keep up with drilling work we could get. Seemed like no matter how hard we worked, and how much money we borrowed, we were always one step behind where we wanted to be. We had so many holes to drill that all our crews were working three shifts a day, and over several states. The nation needed energy, and we were ready to help supply it. Exploration and development drilling jobs were all going full-blast. We had trouble keeping up with them. With luck, we figured we'd be able to get all our equipment out of hock before all the necessary uranium mines were developed.

The beneficial effect of a series nonylphenol polyethylene glycol ether surfactants were tested in the flotation of phosphate ores in which the mixture of sodium oleate and dodecane was used as collector. The performance of nonionic surfactants was first tested in the microflotation of pure apatite mineral. Microflotation experiments showed that the recovery of apatite depends on the number of ethoxylation of the nonylphenol surfactants and decreased with higher ethoxylation. The nonionic surfactant with the smallest ethoxylation group used in this research (NP-4) was then tested in batch flotation of phosphate ores. The flotation of three different size phosphate ores was carried out in the absence and presence of NP-4 surfactant. The beneficial effect of nonionic surfactant was obtained for fine size (-35+150 mesh) and very fine size (-150+400 mesh) phosphate ores at different collector dosages studied. But, in the flotation of coarse size (-16+ 35 mesh) phosphate ore the beneficial effect of nonionic surfactant was obtained only at high collector dosages.

Small seams of fibrous tremolite and actinolite commonly occur in many California counties. A number of larger seams of this fibrous material were mined from 1882 until about 1955. The fibers from these mines were used for making acid filters, battery cases and fire-resistant paint. With increasing population, new residential areas are being developed in the foothill regions, leading to increased contact with seams of fibrous amphiboles. These forms of asbestos can be particularly dangerous to human health. Thus, it is necessary to determine the locations of these mines and adjacent veins and to identify the specific amphibole minerals present.

This paper will provide an update of the Channel Tunnel Project including a discussion of the overall legal structure and management organisation. It is important to understand the mission that TML, as a design/build contractor, has undertaken and how the various interfaces have evolved between the other entities involved in the project. The paper will describe the evolution of the management organisation and the approach to completion of our contract, recapping the historic events and moving into a projection of how we will manage the completion of this very large transportation system.

To detect the place and range of fire is one of the key technologies in the extinction of coal mine underground fire. A fire-prevention and extinction research team of Shanxi Mining College have successfully carried out a program detecting the place of fire with radon. In the past four years the authers have done the detecting work in several mines in Shanxi Province, such as Gujao, Xuangang Louan and Ningwu. The place and scope and the trend of underground fire of coal mine can be now exactly estimated. The data and information from detecting provide a reliable basis for drawing up the scheme to extinguish underground fire and extract mineral coal securely. The principle and method of fire detecting based on radon on surface, the data processing and analysis are discussed in this paper.

The differentiation between saturated and un-saturated soils becomes necessary due to basic differences in their nature and engineering behavior. The most important difference is the existence of a suction zone, above the water table, in unsaturated soils. Pore water pressure in this zone is always negative and the shear strength is greater than the one in saturated soils. This is due to an occasional and apparent component in the Mohr-Coulomb equation, which appears in unsaturated soils. In slope stability analysis of unsaturated soils, the factor of safety increases due to this occasional cohesion component of the shear strength. However, the suction zone tends to disappear because of rainfall. In these cases the factor of safety decreases and eventually the slope may fail. In this article, a parametric study of the effect of suction zone fluctuation due to precipitation in slope stability is examined. For this purpose a Combined Hydrology and Stability Model (CHASM) has been applied.
