Quick, inexpensive and accurate mineral-phase identification is of utmost importance to applied mineralogists. The precise relationship between the intensity of measured backscattered electrons in a scanning electron microscope and the average atomic number of the specimen is still argued. Nevertheless, much can be gained by using backscattered electron images to identify mineral phases in a specimen. An application was developed to facilitate this method and makes it a practical, inexpensive and valuable option in many mineralogical investigations. The goal of public policies is to connect desired ends with practical means toward their achievement. How the desired ends are determined, and whose goals and objectives they incorporate, depends upon the culture and political system of the country in question. With few exceptions, policies change over time to reflect changed perspectives and understanding of the world around us. This is true regardless of the policy area in question. Thus, how societies view and manage their mineral resources has evolved in response to public attitudes, societal needs, economic circumstance, cultural perspectives, political orientations, technological advancements, and geological knowledge. In this paper we examine how the scope of concern has changed for mineral policy. We then review the overarching issues that have in recent years been considered essential components of mineral policies. We point out how neoclassical microeconomics has influenced recent policy design. We then use a market flow diagram to illustrate how policies can be focused at specific market issues. We next discuss mineral resources in the context of sustainable development. We identify issues that become relevant when the frame of reference is enlarged beyond ensuring supply and capturing economic rent. We show that policy based solely on neoclassical economics may not be able to effectively incorporate these issues.

At the Fort Knox Mine, Fairbanks, Alaska, carbon fines are generated during stripping, acid washing and kiln regeneration operations. Because of their gold value, carbon fines are collected by a filter press. Samples of the carbon fines show that they consist of 20% to 30% carbon, 70% to 80% grit and 0.17 to 0.68 g/kg (5.0-19.9 oz/st) gold. About 80% of the gold values in the carbon fines used in this study are in the form of recrystallized free gold grains, with the balance being the adsorbed gold on the carbon. High recoveries of gold and carbon were obtained from the fines in laboratory tests using froth flotation, with a high rejection of the grit. More than 95% of gold and 90% of carbon can be recovered by three stages of gold flotation followed by two stages of carbon flotation. Key words: Gold recovery, Activated carbon, Flotation

Special attention is focused on the first use nitrogen In the Czech Republic, it is probably the first case of fighting a mine fire using nitrogen in all the World. Discussion dwells on the present-day use of nitrogen, its sources, consumption, technological equipment, and the theoretical evaluation of nitrogen flushing.

This paper reports on recently completed research that investigated the health fabric of mining communities in British Columbia (BC), Canada. The project, funded by two national funding agencies and the BC Government, and supported by numerous provincial organizations, marked a collaboration between mining engineering and health researchers. The study employed mixed-methods. First, a quantitative phase merged census, mining industry and health data to investigate the relationship between declining economic conditions and health outcomes (mental illness and stress-mediated cardiovascular disease). Second, a qualitative phase investigated community health issues associated with the mining boom-bust cycle from the perspective of health and social service providers working in a northern BC coal mining community. Third health research findings were disseminated to potential knowledge users in the hope of enhancing mine impact assessing and integrated mine planning. The paper provides a synthesis of the research methods used in this project, and highlights the main indicators used and key findings. It concludes by identifying recommendations, and future research needs considered to be of particular importance to the health and sustainability of mining communities in BC, Canada and around the globe.

The Bureau of Mines conducted research on the flotation hydrodynamics of fine particle flotation to improve the flotation efficiency in our domestic minerals industry. The turbulent fluid velocity profile was measured in various flotation cells at different levels of dissipation energy. The importance of dissipation energy and bubble size within the flotation cells for the flotation response of a chalcopyrite ore was evaluated. Both increased turbulent fluid flow and fine size bubbles improved the flotation rate of fine size chalcopyrite particles.

Introduction Mining and minerals transportation spans the distance from the pit face and mine wall to the consumer. This transportation can be as simple as coal transfer from the mine and preparation plant by conveyor to a mine mouth electric generating plant. Or it can be as complex as copper ore transportation: concentrated, smelted, refined; drawn into wire and insulated; and cut into reels and transported to local industrial supply houses. The route of aluminum from the bauxite pits to the supermarket shelf in the form of household food wrap is another example of the potential complexity of minerals transportation. For perspective, however, mine to market minerals transportation can be split into three components: materials handling, transportation, and distribution. It should also be recognized that each mineral, market, producer, and consumer has unique transportation characteristics regarding costs, transportation mode, and alternatives in the transportation scheme. Some obvious considerations are the number of producers and consumers, the number of markets and customers the mineral serves. Concerning the latter, are you selling a million tons to one customer or a ton each to a million customers? Transportation volume About the only generalization that can be made about minerals transportation concerns the large volume of materials involved. No other industry compares to the mining and minerals industry in its huge movement of product in the crude, semi-processed, processed, fabricated, and converted states, as shown by the accompanying table of US mineral production. Whether it is crushed stone or sand and gravel moving by truck to a local market from local producers, or coal moving by 9.07 kt (10,000 st) unit trains from a mine to a power plant, or iron ore moving by lake vessel from the upper lake ports to the lower lake steel mills, mineral transportation volumes are huge. The nature of production and consumption affects the transportation mode. More than 60% of the coal moves by rail. The majority of iron ore moves by lake vessel. Ninety per cent of the sand and gravel and more than 80% of crushed stone moves by truck. Cake filtration is a complex process and the cake constructure is very difficult to describe in theory. Cake constructure parameters, such as the cake prosity, pore size shape and even its distribution, are main factors influencing the filtration results but have not been thoroughly understood yet. In this paper the fractal theory, an effective mathematical method in describing the self-similar phenomenon is used to investigate the filter cake constructure, and the scanning electron microscope and automatic image analyzer are used to measure the cake constructure. Cakes which formed in different condition are examined and the fractal dimension of the cake are calculated. The study shows that the constructure of the filter cake can be approximated by Sierpinski fractal geometry and that the fractal dimension of filter cake, related to the particle characteristics, slurry concentration and filtration pressure is a good parameter to describe the pore size distribution and the cake penetrability.

The importance of planning ventilation systems in modern coal mines cannot be overemphasized. Interconnected entries, airflows around and through mined-out areas, leakages through stoppings and other control devices, and the use of multiple fans all contribute to the complexity of ventilation network analysis. Fortunately, the availability of computer programs (e. g., Didyk et al., 1978; McPherson, 1966; Wang and Saperstein, 1970) has greatly reduced the difficulty in net- work analysis. However, to obtain a suitable solution to the practical problem, a ventilation engineer has to simulate various conditions based on the proposed ventilation layouts and the capacities of available fans. It is often a trial-and-error process, although engineering knowledge and judgement are required.

AMAX Coal Company has constructed the first commercial demonstration sub-bituminous coal dryer at its Belle Ayr Mine south of Gillette, Wyoming. This 215 ton per hour facility is projected to produce 165 tons per hour of dried coal at 10 percent moisture and 10,800 Btulpound (6,000 KCIkg). Approximately 43 tons per hour of water will be removed from the coal and seven tons per hour of coal burned as fuel.

The behavior of gold particles on a spiral was studied using radioactive gold tracers. The method allowed the effects of particle size, particle shape, pulp density, feed rate and splitter settings to be studied. Although the method has been successfully applied to other gravity concentrators, it was found that reliable results were more difficult to obtain on the spiral. However, these preliminary results show that, with suitable precautions, the technique is capable of providing valuable information, unobtainable from conventional studies, that could be used to better optimize spiral performance.

Horizontal stress is an important factor that contributes to roof failure during longwall entry development, especially when the immediate roof is weak. In this paper, the effects of stress angle between the maximum horizontal stress and entry development and stress ratio of the maximum to minimum horizontal stresses on the stress distributions in the weak immediate roof of a three-entry system are analyzed using the finite element method. The results have confirmed that stress angle has a significant influence on the stress distributions. Generally, the three-entry system is in the worst stress condition when the stress angle is about 60° to 75° . The stress ratio has also some effects on the roof stresses.

Computer generated magnetic field reference signa- tures of steel cord belt splices are used to evaluate lay-up and fabrication irregularities of splices in operating conveyors. Used as a quality inspection tool, magnetic signature analysis is useful in auditing data collected by general non-destructive testing (NDT) consultants. The evaluation can detect irregularities that weaken a splice, as well as detecting signature changes that can be indicative of adhesion loss. The evaluation can be applied to any NDT data available from a variety of commercial sources, which means that independent review of critical splice data is possible.

Microsilica or silica fume is a waste material generated from silicon or silicon-containing alloys producing electric furnaces. One of its usage is as an additive in the concrete production. This investigation describes a process to use microsilica as a feed material to produce fine silicon carbide. A thermal plasma reactor is used to convert this waste material into a value added ceramic. This paper provides a summary of a two-day conference held in New Orleans in March 1980, entitled "Tunnel Instrumentation: Benefits and Implementation." The conference addressed two major questions: First, what are the benefits of using instrumentation during tunnel construction? Second, what contractual relations should be established for conducting instrumentation programs during tunnel construction? Each session consisted of brief formal presentations and extensive panel discussions with participation from attendees. Attendees included owners, designers, contractors, and instrumentation specialists. This paper presents a consensus of views expressed during the conference.

Fine-coal screening can be one of the most critical operations in a modern coal-cleaning plant. The yield and quality of clean coal produced in fine-coal circuits is controlled as much by how efficiently 0.15 mm (100 mesh) particles are sized as on the performance traits of the fine-coal cleaning device itself. In addition, the increased interest in effective fine-coal sizing operations indicates that many operators have also discovered its importance in affecting the quality and yield of clean coal produced in fine-coal circuits. This paper describes the three most prevalently used fine-coal screening technologies and discusses their sizing mechanism, performance, and application.

An existing coal mine's raw coal 60 inch conveyor system had become productivity bound by a capacity of 3,500 tph. The existing conveyor drives were fixed speed wound rotor induction motor drives installed in 1983. The fast track upgrade installed variable speed medium voltage variable frequency drives to speed up the conveyor to a capacity of 5, 000 tph. The installation took place over a one week system shutdown during Christmas 2000.

In grinding-classification circuit, overgrinding, resulted from the fact that hydrophobic materials have higher density than hydrophilicmaterials, has been known as a knotty problem. By using of the air-sparged hydrocyclone (ASH) as classifier, in this pair, the overgrinding of hydrophobic materials has been successfully minimized. Compared with the conventional hydrocyclones, the ASH has less fine hydrophobic particles in the underflow and less large particles in the overflow, which shows that the recovery of fine hydrophobic particles in the overflow has been improved in the ASH.

The conveyor housing's corroded, exposed metal- deck was cleaned and cocooned to prevent renewed corrosion, at less than the cost of replacing the structure. And the process did not require operations to shut down. That was the result for Akzo Salt at its mine under Lake Erie's Whiskey Island, just off Cleveland, OH'S north coast. The exposed metal deck was on the underside of a covered, outdoor conveyor used to load mined road salt into boats.
