D.A. Dahlstrom In the paper, a comparison was made between flowsheets using the screen bowl centrifuge and disc filters, respectively, as the primary dewatering device. The authors very effectively show that by raising feed temperature, mechanical dewatering is enhanced through reduced viscosity of the water. When a final coal moisture of 10% is required, the net effect of heating the feed is a reduction in thermal requirements because of the lower evaporated load on the dryer. The flowsheet comparison on this, however, was not completely correct. Disc filters do not generally utilize enhanced mechanical dewatering through increased temperature. Horizontal belt filters, through the optimal use of steam heating of the filter cake, have shown significant cost reductions over disc filters where steam is not used. In addition, the authors forgot to mention that there is a certain fraction of the feed that is so fine that it cannot be recovered by the centrifuge economically. That is the function of the filtration device shown in Fig. 4. In subbituminous pipeline coals, this fraction represents more than 10% of the feed. Even after flocculation and belt pressing, the moisture content in the fine fraction is 30%-40. Recent tests on a subbituminous pipeline coal slurry, compared an Eimco-Extractor horizontal belt filter with the screen bowl centrifuge flowsheet shown in Fig. 4. Mechanical dewatering was enhanced through the use of a steam dry zone after the initial dewatering zone. Vacuum pump horsepower was reduced by more than 50% through the use of condensors, and heat recovery was utilized to minimize thermal costs. Thermal drying to 10% moisture by weight was required in both flowsheets. The 0.5 wt% fines in the filtrate were flocculated and recycled to the filter, thus eliminating the belt press and solids mixers. When the three major operating costs (which normally account for 50%-75% of the coal operating costs) of steam, electricity, and flocculants at current prices were calculated, the flowsheets utilizing the Eimco-Extractor had cost savings vs the centrifuge flowsheet of 89¢/t (81o; per st) of surface dry coal. This advantage increases with increasing thermal and electricity prices. I congratulate the authors for the strides made with the screen bowl centrifuge. However, filtration flowsheets continue to be improved and their simplicity and low thermal and electrical requirements should not be so quickly dismissed. ? Reply by N.D. Policow From a technical standpoint, a number of extensive test programs have demonstrated that by raising the feed temperature, mechanical dewatering is enhanced whether it be centrifuges or filters performing the separation. Economic constraints usually become the over-riding issue. If an inexpensive source of thermal energy is available, i.e., waste steam, etc., the approach becomes commercially acceptable. For the specific case of coal slurry pipelines, since the dewatering plants will be located close to power generation stations, the preheating approach becomes especially attractive. The cost comparison shown in Fig. 7, which was prepared by a major West Coast engineering firm, contrasted screen bowl centrifuges and disc filters. In both alternatives, a thermal dryer was specified to produce a contract moisture of the final product. Sizing of the thermal dryer on the screen bowl alternative was substantially smaller than that of the filter, since the screen bowl was credited with a four to six percentage point decrease in product moisture compared to the disc. This comparison was made at ambient temperatures and reflected solely the mechanical dewatering capabilities of the two devices. No preheating of the feed was included in this particular comparison. Early generation screen bowl centrifuges operated under the principle of maximum bulk tonnage throughput. Second and third generation machines have followed the trends dictated by the coal industry calling for higher one-pass recoveries than previously demanded. The current generation of high-speed, long-bowl centrifuges permit recoveries of ultrafine solids directly comparable to commercial filter operation. On typical coal preparation plant feeds with nominal 600 E. an X 0 (28 mesh X 0) clean coal, recovery levels in excess of 99% are now obtained. The material that does escape the centrifuge and reports to the main effluent is typically -10 µm, high ash material. We have documented substantial beneficiation effects in screen bowl centrifuge performance with the cake product containing lower ash levels than the feed. On the referenced pipeline, coal tests performed on Western subbituminous coal, we found that the percentage of -10 µm material in the feed was six to eight times greater than normally encountered on eastern Appalachian seams. Our 45-t/h (50-stph) production centrifuge was never set up to maximize recovery. It was used as part of the two-stage dewatering circuit that had been chosen by designers of the proposed pipeline. Recoveries up to 95% were recorded. With field adjustments, that performance could most certainly have been improved. In contrast, manufacturers of the horizontal belt filter provided a small pilot-scale unit that operated on a side stream at the test facility. Numerous combinations of chemical additions were evaluated to determine those that had the best impact on filter performance. Whereas the screen bowl centrifuges operated without chemical addition, producing a dry, fluffy cake, the belt filter required two stages of chemical addition to attain satisfactory performance and high recovery levels. Barite and bentonite are the two principal components of drilling fluid systems used in the petroleum industry for oil and gas well drilling with rotary-type rigs. Approximately 87 percent of the world's annual production of barite is used in drilling applications. Of the worldwide production of bentonite, an estimated 30 percent is used. The drilling fluid, or drilling mud, to which barite and bentonite are added, performs five distinct functions: Lubrication-The liquid phase of the drilling mud lubricates the drill bit, preventing premature failure of the cutting edges and bearings. it also helps to soften the formation being drilled. Cuttings Removal-A mud system must be able to carry rock cuttings broken loose by the bit up to the surface where they can be removed by mechanical or chemical methods. The fluid's ability to perform this function depends upon maintaining a proper balance between the rate of circulation of the fluid and the colloidal properties required to entrain the cuttings in the mud to prevent their settling to the bottom of the hole. Hole Stability-The pressure exerted by the mud against the wall of the bore hole prevents the collapse of the uncased portions of the hole. Downhole Information-The fluid characteristics of the mud should be such that good cuttings samples, cores and electric logs may be obtained to help evaluate a well's productive zones and potential. Control Oil, Gas and Water Flows-It is essential that a drilling fluid offset any pressure from naturally occurring formation fluids in order to prevent a potentially wasteful and dangerous blowout.

Manganese (Mn) ferroalloys are chiefly consumed in the steelmaking process as a deoxidizing agent or as an alloying element to produce high-quality steels. These alloys are typically produced in a submerged arc furnace using coke, fluxes and manganese ores of a specific manganese/Fe (Mn/Fe) ratio. Preferred-grade manganese ores should have Mn content greater than 46 percent and Mn/Fe content greater than 5 to produce commercial-grade, high-carbon ferromanganese [1]. Selective mining of high-grade Mn resources has created a scarcity of these resources, which is emerging as a major challenge for the manganese and steel industry. Manganese ore resources are mainly distributed in South Africa, with about 32 percent; Ukraine, with about 17 percent; Australia, with about 17 percent; and Brazil, India, China, Gabon and Mexico, with lesser amounts.

The Upper Reach segment of the Northeast Interceptor Sewer (NEIS) is a3.2-km-long tunnel excavated in interbedded marine sedimentary deposits with approximately 40 m of cover. The tunnel was initially classified by Cal/OSHA as “potentially gassy.” During excavation, high levels of hydrogen sulfide and methane were encountered, prompting Cal/OSHA to reclassify the tunnel as “gassy.” In addition, the tunnel excavation encountered an abandoned, 100-year-old water tunnel known as the “Narrows Gallery.” This existing tunnel was completely full of water and under 30 m of hydrostatic head. This paper will discuss the unanticipated difficulties and design solutions implemented to construct a gassy tunnel exposed to high volumes of water.

The EVINOS-MORNOS tunnel project with its 30 km of length is one of the longest hydraulic tunnel in the world realised with TBM method. The adverse geological conditions, the high cover and the short construction schedule were a great challenge for the successful construction of this tunnel. The paper will describe: the criteria adopted for the tunnel design, the selection of the construction methods and equipment, the productions of the 4 TBMs adopted and the comparison of the behaviour of the different type of TBMs in the various rock conditions, including special conditions, the characteristics of the adopted in situ and precast linings, a comparison between the foreseen and actual construction schedules, the contractual implications of realising a tunnel in such a severe and complex conditions.

To understand why some companies excel in creating value, Jim Collins (2001) and a group of postgraduate business students engaged in a comprehensive, five-year research project. They examined 1,435 U.S. companies for more than 40 years, seeking those that made significant improvements in their financial performance over time. The distinctive pattern sought was: ?Fifteen-year cumulative stock returns at or below the general stock market, punctuated by a transition point, then cumulative returns at least three times the market over the next 15 years. ?The search identified 11 outperforming companies, all in different industries, that were called the ?good to great? companies. To contrast these companies with similar peers within the same industry, the search also selected a group of comparison companies that failed to make the leap from good to great. Collins then set out to examine the transition point. What distinguishing features did the good-to-great companies have that their industry counterparts did not? At the heart of the findings about these outstanding companies is what Collins refers to as the ?hedgehog concept? ? how to find the one big thing that the company must focus on. According to Collins, those who built the good-to-great companies were, to one degree or another, hedgehogs. Those who led the comparison companies tended to be foxes, never gaining the clarifying advantage of a hedgehog concept, being instead scattered, diffused and inconsistent. This insight is complemented by Peter Drucker (2004), an influential management guru, who asserts that the first question an effective executive should ask is: ?what needs to be done?? Asking this question and taking it seriously, he asserts, is crucial for managerial success; and that the answer almost always has more than one urgent task, but the effective leader only concentrates on one task. In this last respect, Drucker emphasizes: ?If they [executives] are among the sizeable minority who work best with a change of pace in the working day, they pick two tasks. I have never encountered an executive who is effective while tackling more than two tasks at a time.?

The rapid increase of P2O5 use for food, biofuels, and LiFePO4 batteries etc. accelerates the depletion rate of phosphate reserves. In the phosphate industry, a significant amount of ultrafine phosphate has been discarded as slime tailing due to processing difficulties. The major problems associated with ultrafine particle flotation are low probability of bubble-particle collision and adhesion, and high probability of unwanted gangue particles entrainment. This paper investigates the enhanced ultrafine phosphate particle flotation probability by Eriez’ CavTube generated fine/ ultrafine bubbles and the improved flotation selectivity by wash water etc. Ultrafine phosphates with various gangue minerals of quartz/muscovite, calcite/dolomite, and iron/ silica were studied. Microscopic observations show that the entrained ultrafine gangue minerals can be minimized by using wash water in column flotation. A three-factor threelevel central composite experimental design was conducted for ultrafine phosphate flotation. For comparison, both benchtop mechanical cell and laboratory column flotation tests were performed at their optimal respective flotation conditions. Using Eriez CavTube column flotation technology for Industries Chimiques du Senegal (ICS) ultrafine slime tailings, a concentrate grade of 36.0% P2O5, was achieved at 89.4% P2O5 recovery. Improved flotation performance was achieved using column flotation as compared to benchtop mechanical cell flotation. The benefits of Eriez’ column flotation technology realized from this study include the high P2O5 grade and recovery.

Traditionally (with a few exceptions) tunnel boring machines (TBMs) have been utilized on tunnel projects where the risks associated with deep tunnels (rock burst, squeeze, etc) are low (or expected to be low). This has generally been due to the extremely adverse consequences of entrapping or damaging a TBM under such conditions; but also due to the relative difficulty of dealing with these ground conditions in the confined working area of a TBM, in comparison to a drill and blast heading. This paper review the constraints of operating a TBM in a deep tunnel and discusses related project experience, particularly recent and current experience with TBMs in the deep Alpine Base Tunnels. Potential future applications of TBMs in the development of large, deep underground mines are also discussed.

The FASTMETSM Process is a coal-based process for converting iron oxide fines into metallic iron. The end product, direct reduced iron (DRI) is used as a low residual charge material in electric arc furnace steelmaking. This paper describes the FASTMET Process and its potential application in the United States. Operating results from a 175 kg/h process simulator are presented. Characteristics of the end product are discussed. Process economics are reviewed along with plans for scaling-up the process to full commercial size.

Employing the combination of two types of polyelectrolyte might become necessary to enhance both settling rate of the flocs and water clarity of fine particle suspension in high capacity thickening process. The sequence of addition, mixing, type and dosage of polymer affect the overall performance and capacity of a thickening process. For the sedimentation of copper flotation tailings, the cylinder test results showed that two different techniques may be used to achieve the required performance including high settling rate of flocs, underflow density and overflow water clarity, by either adjusting pH prior to anionic polyelectrolyte flocculation, or using a combination of polymer flocculant and coagulant (dual polymer system). The dynamic thickening testing results showed that only the approach using a dual polymer system is able to meet the required performance. The effects of polyelectrolyte dosage, the sequence and numbers of polyelectrolyte addition, feed concentration, bed level and rake speed on the settling rate, underflow solid, and water clarity were studied in cylinder test and a laboratory dynamic thickening unit with various conditions related to the thickening process. The dynamic test is especially valuable in evaluating the addition and mixing of polymers. The results were evaluated quantitatively, using total suspended solids in supernatant, underflow density and capacity per unit settling area per unit time as the measure of effectiveness. The objective of this study is to quantify and explain some of the parameters involved in the sedimentation of copper flotation tailings.

Introduction Some unique opportunities exist for industrial minerals in British Columbia and Alberta. The region's diversified geology, particularly in British Columbia, offers favorable environments for a rich variety of mineral resources. Many minerals have been produced for years. For some, however, the level of production is far less than the potential. Others have had production in the past, but are not currently produced. Still others are known to exist and may have been actively prospected. But they are not yet developed. In addition, a number of speculative possibilities have recently come to light. The potential significance is not fully confirmed, but is suggested in showings in favorable geologic settings. Location and geography British Columbia and Alberta are the westernmost provinces in Canada (Fig. 1). The region overlaps two major physiographic divisions of the country, the Cordillera and the Interior Plains. It also takes in a small segment of the Canadian Shield on the east. The entire territory is greater than 1.6 Mkm2 (618,000 sq miles). Most of British Columbia lies within the Cordillera, a mountainous belt some 800 km (500 miles) wide. The belt is made up of three main physiographic components, the Eastern, Interior, and Western subdivisions. The Eastern subdivision embraces the rugged, linear ranges of the Rocky Mountains, elevations between 2600 and 3300 m (8530 and 10,800 ft). They form a 100-km (62-mile) wide band straddling the BC-Alberta border and extending northwest across northern British Columbia. The Interior subdivision includes several ancient mountain ranges but is dominated by an intermountane plateau area of low relief (average elevation 1200 m or 3900 ft). The Western subdivision is dominated by the Coast Mountains (elevations between 1800 and 4000 m or 5900 and 13,123 ft). These form a band about 175 km (110 miles) wide into which are sculptured the spectacular fiords of the BC coastline. Alberta lies largely within the Interior Plains, a prairie region of low to moderate relief (elevations between 200 and 1200 m or 650 and 3940 ft) formed of nearly horizontal bedrock strata. The Plains surface rises gradually to the southwest toward the deformed belt of the Rocky Mountains, where the bedrock strata are upturned, folded, and faulted. To the east, the Plains merge with the Canadian Shield, which exposes the Precambrian crystalline basement of western Canada. The total population of the BC-Alberta region is about five million people. Minerals, forestry, and agriculture are the primary industries here. It has well developed infrastructures to service these industries. British Columbia is third among the Canadian provinces in metal mining - $1.1 billion in 1985 - and first in forest products. It is also second in hydro-electric power development. Alberta leads all provinces in total mineral production, largely due to its extensively developed petroleum and natural gas resources - $26.2 billion in 1985.

Elemental analysis of slurry streams using X-ray fluorescence (XRF) has long been employed. However, detector technology has limited the application of XRF devices. Using detector technology employed on NASA's Mars Pathfinder to analyze soil samples, Process Control, Inc. has developed an on-line analyzer to mount on a sampling system. The prototype XRF elemental analyzer was installed at Detroit Edison's Monroe Power Plant in January, 1998 and has been employed to monitor feedstock quality. A slurry system has been developed for flotation control. This paper describes the testing of the analyzer using the new, draft ISO standard for evaluating the performance of online analyzers (ISO/DIS15239).

The opportunity to make a close study of the available geologic data existing along the line of the California Aqueduct crossing of the Garlock fault in the Tehachapi Mountains was brought about first by my involvement in the prebid examinations, and later with contractors' claim cases. The California Aqueduct crosses through the western end of the Tehachapi Mountains and cuts across the Garlock fault zone at a location about 9 miles east from its junction with the San Andreas fault zone. This is about 65 miles northwest of Los Angeles and 38 miles southeast of Bakersfield (Fig. 1) (1). This map was published after the tunnels were started and shows the corrected geology. At the crossing the fault has north and south branches which extend northeastward for about 22 miles before converging. In the vicinity immediately east of the tunnel line the north branch of the fault starts to converge toward the west. After crossing the line it passes under the upper plate of the apparent easterly extension of the Pastoria thrust fault, so the actual junction with the south branch is obscured. The aqueduct design called for the expected active slip zone of the north Garlock fault branch to be crossed by the 2,800 foot long Pastoria siphon, which connects with the north portal of Tehachapi Tunnel No. 3. The tunnel would extend through the western end of Genghus Ridge which lies between the north branch and the main south Garlock fault zone in Beartrap Canyon. Here again the

"Molybdenum recovery by solvent extraction has gained interest partly due to advances in concentrate leach technology. Historically, both molybdenum and rhenium have been produced using amine-based extractants with the ability to co-extract both metals. Alternatively, a phosphinic acid-based extractant (CYANEX® 600) can be used depending on the flow sheet. CYANEX® 600 selectively extracts Mo leaving Re in the raffinate, which is a valuable feature in plants which require rejection of the rhenium from the molybdenum circuit. CYANEX® 600 piloting results are reviewed and compared to commercial experiences with an amine-based extractant. INTRODUCTION Molybdenum is most commonly found as molybdenite (MoS2) in primary porphyry deposits (about 59% of global reserves) and copper porphyries (about 39% of molybdenum reserves)[1]. Recovery from molybdenite traditionally involves flotation (concentrates typically containing 85 – 95% MoS2) followed by roasting to produce MoO3. Solvent extraction is also used to recover molybdenum from acidic aqueous solutions resulting from scrubbing of roaster and smelter off gasses and leaching of molybdenite (uranium ores). Molybdenum is also frequently found in low concentrations in copper leach inventories[2]. More recently, pressure oxidation has gained interest to treat molybdenite concentrates. Molybdenum Chemistry The chemistry of molybdenum is complex with a series of extractable species existing dependent on the pH and oxidation state as shown in Figure 1.Under strongly basic conditions, molybdenum primarily exists as MoO42- while under strongly acidic conditions MoO22+ becomes the predominant species. In between, a number of isopolymolybdates such as Mo7O246- and Mo8O264- are dominant. Equations (1) – (3) demonstrate some of the proposed molybdenum equilibrium reactions[1]."

Changes and the pace of change in China’s coal industry have been extraordinary during the past several years. At least 35 of the 94 former coal bureaus have been restructured into different mining companies and groups. Some of the more productive and efficient ones were further strengthened through consolidation and expansions. And several have even formed, or are in the process of forming, strategic alliances with utility companies, railroads, ports and chemical companies to secure additional reserves and coal sales. In addition, the improvement in coal pricing during the past two years has enabled China’s coal industry to move ahead with some needed changes. Coal mining accidents, though, remain a major concern for the Chinese government. Accidents remain high even though the government has made efforts to shutdown more than 55,000 unlicensed, unsafe small coal operations throughout the country.

As the techniques and resolution for 3-D spatial analysis have advanced in the last decade, it is now possible to map in detail the microstructure of multiphase materials in three-dimensional digital space. In this regard, three-dimensional x-ray microtomography offers a unique imaging capability. Spatial resolution on the order of ten microns can be achieved with the use of microfocus x-ray generators. Recently, a state-of-the-art cone beam x-ray microtomography system has been installed at the University of Utah for the quantitative analysis of multiphase materials in three dimensions. This facility has been designed to obtain 2048 x 2048 pixel reconstruction over a 10-mm diameter, while also allowing for the imaging of somewhat larger (40-mm) objects. The system is capable of handling high-density materials, even materials having a density as high as 8.0 g/cm3. This unique, one-of-a-kind, instrument will be used to obtain three-dimensional spatial reconstruction for such applications as specific examples 3D liberation analysis, pore structure analysis of particle beds during filtration and air-void system of concrete structures. The utilization of x-ray microtomography not only will allow for quantitative analysis of multiphase systems but also allow for textural characterization and the determination of phase continuity. In this paper, we present information regarding the current use of this new facility and reviewed potential applications for the advanced analytical system.

Rare earth elements are essential for modern life products and green technologies. Recent supply constraints have boosted the development of rare earth projects after the price peak of 2011. The feasibility of a project depends on the definition of a processing route, which in turn depends primarily on the rare earth mineral, with monazite and bastnaesite representing the two most relevant minerals. Monazite-type ores usually contain high acid consumption impurities, such as iron, aluminum, calcium, magnesium, and phosphates, and may also contain prohibitive levels of radioactive thorium in its composition. This work presents a thermodynamic analysis of a monazite system and discusses the fundamentals of a selective process route for rare earth extraction from monazite ores with high iron content. This process involves sulfation by means of concentrated sulfuric acid and roasting at a high temperature. The route yields high rare earth extraction with low iron and thorium extractions and low acid consumption. Rare earth extractions as high as 80% were achieved, while iron and thorium extractions were lower than 1%, and acid consumption was lower than 0.34 kg of sulfuric acid per kg of ore. The operational window was compared to the one predicted by thermodynamic modeling, with 700 °C representing the optimal roasting temperature

Frontino, a municipality in western Antioquia, Colombia, has more than 200 years of mining tradition. Currently, mining activities are carried out for lode gold using subway tunnels, where the grinding of the material is done in "cocos", whose energy depends on internal combustion engines and ACPM, environmentally polluting and inefficient methods. In accordance with the Sustainable Development Goals as an initiative developed by the UN, different mining methodologies that are aligned with these are constantly being analyzed. This study proposes to eliminate the use of hydrocarbons in artisanal mining, mainly promoting Sustainable Development Goals 7, 9, 11, 12, and 13. This will be achieved through an energy transition to renewable energy sources that take advantage of the topography and water resources of the area, providing advantages to the communities that live there, such as lighting, electricity for cooking, ventilation for mines, etc

A multiyear program involving online, in-vessel exposures at Barrick Goldstrike Mines Inc. (BGMI) has provided information and experience about the materials and designs for brickwork linings in pressure oxidation autoclaves. A variety of brick and mortar products was evaluated. Properties before and after exposure were used to document the performance. Some benefits include the development of a new silicate mortar, a better understanding of brick requirements and increased autoclave operating time between maintenance shutdowns. BGMI operates six pressure oxidation autoclaves at its Eureka County, NV gold operation. These autoclave process 15.8 k/ld (17,500 stpd) of gold ore. Figure 1 is a flowsheet of the six autoclave circuits. The gold ore is refractory, in which the gold particles are mineralogically encapsulated on a micro- and submicroscopic level. The autoclaves are 4.4- m- (14-ft-) diam and 26 m (85 ft) long (tip-to-tip). Inside of each is a full brickwork (brick plus mortar) lining that divides the vessel into five compartments. Each compartment has a motor-driven agitator that keeps the slurry suspended and disperses the oxygen to enhance reaction. During autoclave operation, the conditions are steady state at 210° to 232° C (410° to 450° F) and 61 to 62 kPa (420-430 psi). As shown in Fig. 1, there are other accessory vessels (splash and flash towers) in the autoclave circuits that are also brickwork-lined. The linings used to date, other than small test sections, have all been acid-resistant fireclay bricks, bonded with alkali silicate mortar, PbO- based mortar and/or vinyl ester mortar, but mainly alkali silicate mortar.

In the mid-to-late 1800’s the U.S. mining industry was on the threshold of nearly a century of golden times. Nearly every state had a prosperous and growing mining sector. The importance of the industry was reflected in the creation of the state school of mines. Today, with the depletion of readily available mineral reserves, much of the U.S. metals mining industry is considered to be in a sunset phase. The same is true with the mining schools that serve the industry. However, the United States is still a major consumer of the world’s minerals and requires a dependable supply of both minerals and minerals professionals. In his 2002 Jackling Lecture “You Can’t Make a Silk Purse Out of a Sow’s Ear” the author presented a list of concerns, propositions and recommendations. In this follow-up paper, the author further explores the subject through the presentation of a detailed case example focusing on the iron mining industry of Minnesota and minerals education at the University of Minnesota.
