Oregon Resources Corp. (ORC) has developed and permitted a new mining operation that incorporates a process design that will allow the unique paleo-beach placer deposits of southwestern Oregon to be extracted efficiently and economically, creating the only domestically mined source of a unique foundry grade chromite and specialty de-veining sand for precision casting. The operation will also provide an additional domestic source of garnet and zircon. Engineering design has been guided by the variable geology and mineralogy of the paleo-beach placer deposits as well as the need for a dry tailing scheme that resolves a lack of water resources at the placer locations and at the same time eliminates the need for slurry settling ponds, typical of paleo-beach placer operations in North America.

The Slippery Rock Watershed Coalition was organized to restore a 70 km2 portion of the headwaters of the Slippery Rock Watershed in northwest Pennsylvania. Thirteen passive treatment systems have been installed with engineering and funding provided by private industries, county government and the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. In addition, experimental systems have been installed at the Jennings Environmental Education Center which, in addition to monitoring the systems installed within the watershed, provide an array of educational and research opportunities for secondary, college and university students. The coalition sponsors an annual seminar for students to present the results of their research and field trips for public officials and private citizens to learn how public and private partnerships work together to restore the Slippery Rock Creek watershed.

Is the laboratory sized coal specimen much stronger than underground coal pillars? The answer to this question has a profound implication to many coal operators. It will decide how much of the coal reserve can be recovered. Or, in many cases, it will determine whether it can be mined economically. Recent trends in several eastern states to establish regulations regarding coal pillar design to prevent surface subsidence long after mining heighten the debates. And, in some cases, these trends highlight the existing practices that seriously question the conventional wisdom. Currently, nearly all researchers and practitioners agree that as the size of rock specimens increases, its strength decreases. This concept has been universally adopted as the basic principle for coal pillar design in the United States. Several formulas have been derived to account for this effect. The reduction factor for underground coal pillars ranges from one-half to one-sixth of the strength obtained in the laboratory, depending on the formula selected. Recent case studies indicate that the reduction factor is not justifiable, at east in some cases. The use of a reduction factor is based on the assumption hat smaller rock specimens as tested in he laboratory contain none or fewer fractures or planes of weakness than larger specimens or underground coal pillars. In other words, the larger the rock materials, the more fractures it contains and subsequently weaker in strength. Do all underground coal pillars have more fractures than laboratory sized coal specimens? Not necessarily. All coal contains cleats. Some are con¬spicuous but others are not. In terms of cleat density (number of cleats per unit area), there is no difference between an underground coal pillar and a laboratory sized specimen, provided the specimen size is larger than the cleat spacing, which is mostly 25 to 75 mm (1 to 3 in.).

"Once every four years, the global mining industry gathers in Las Vegas, NV for MINExpo International. According to the show’s organizer, The National Mining Association (NMA), about 44,000 people attended the three-day show from Sept. 26-29. It was a show that featured the latest and greatest in equipment and technology. It also served as the backdrop for a snapshot of the state of the industry and while the picture of a global industry is never completely clear at any one time, one thing that is evident is technology has become a major force in the way mining is done.Had it not been for the awe-inspiring “iron” that was on the show floor in the form of haul trucks and shovels weighing hundreds of tons, one could be forgiven for thinking that they were at the Consumer Electronics Show. From training simulators designed to give a realistic experience of operating mining equipment to virtual reality technology that can take the user into the depths of an underground mine or the middle of a mapped ore deposit, an overriding theme of MINExpo 2016 was that the mining industry is connected like never before.In the north hall of the Las Vegas Convention Center was the GE Mining booth that was designed to showcase its efforts to help create a mine that will be connected from the front office to the face of the underground wall or bottom of the openpit. GE Mining called its booth a digital mine, and it included a suite of technologies that can improve performance, reliability, safety and operations. GE Mining said it views each mine as a mini-city, requiring power, water and transportation. Intelligent, real-time monitoring across the mine allows operators to make data-driven decisions that improve equipment reliability and optimize mine operations for substantial savings. And GE Mining was just one of many exhibitors showing off software that allows various types of equipment to communicate. Its booth sat in the shadow of the Komatsu booth with its new 360-t (400-st) 980E-4 haul truck that included GE’s 360-t (400-st) electric wheel motor. This is just one example of how technology is connecting machines, operations and people around the world and how mining is moving forward."

INTRODUCTION The application of oil field technology to large diameter hole drilling is beginning to offer a cost effective alternative to conventional shaft sinking methods. The drilling of ventilation and small production shafts are, of course, not new. The major constraint to the drilling of large diameter production shafts has been the inability to drill holes large enough and straight enough to install and operate relatively high volume hoisting equipment. This paper discusses recent advancements in drilling technology as applied specifically to large diameter holes for use in the mining industry. The paper emphasizes the geotechnical and hydrologic considerations in assessing site conditions and their application to drilled shaft technology. The authors worked together on a recent feasibility study for a 6 m (20 ft.) diameter 975 m (3,200 ft.) drilled shaft in New Mexico. Their individual experience in drilling and geotechnical investigations related to shaft sinking is world wide. Collectors commonly used in flotation to date fall into two main classes: ionic and nonionic. The use of neutral or oily collectors is generally limited to the flotation of nonpolar minerals onto which they are adsorbed by forces of a physical or 'Van der Waals' type, while ionizable chemical collectors are utilized for all other types of minerals, adsorption in this case involving bonds essentially of a chemical nature. Though chemical adsorption is more selective than physical adsorption, even heteropolar collectors are active towards certain classes of minerals (sulphides for example) rather than towards one individual mineral. Thus, in order to float a given mineral from a mixture of minerals belonging to the same class, modifiers have to be used to render the action of the collector more specific. However, there are often considerable difficulties involved in this procedure and the desired results are not always attained, especially in the case of minerals of complex composition whose surface properties are not sufficiently well known. Hence the importance of seeking out collectors capable of linking selectively with given minerals. Selective linkage is possible if the collector structure incorporates active groups having specific affinity for certain cations characteristic of the mineral surface. The decision to investigate the possibility of utilizing chelate--forming reagents for flotation was based on the premise that phenomena which occur in solution and involve chemical reactions in the strict sense of the meaning and those which occur on the surface are closely correlated (1)

The volume of data produced by operating mines has increased substantially over the last 10 years. However, the volume of data and analytical capability has been negatively correlated to equipment productivity for at least the last seven years. In simple terms, as the volume of data has increased equipment performance has declined. Table (2010) tells us that ?The calamity of the information age is that the toxicity of data increases much faster than its benefits?. More data does not guarantee improving productivity; but more data is also not the cause of declining productivity. Similarly, when equipment performance does start to improve, (it must ? there really is no option if mines want to remain competitive), it will not be the data nor analytics which causes it; it will be the people using the resources at their disposal; including the data. Data and analytics can help if the toxicity of the data can be managed. The simplest form of business improvement using data is benchmarking. The objective of benchmarking is to understand and evaluate the current position of a process in relation to ?best practice? and to identify areas and means of performance improvement. The application of benchmarking involves four key steps: (1) Analyze and understand in detail existing processes; (2) Analyze and understand the processes of others; (3) Compare your own performance with that of the others analyzed; and (4) Design and implement the changes necessary to close the performance gap(s). There are however, many in the mining industries who have shunned equipment benchmarking because they believe that, ?every mine is a pilot?. In other words, the differences between mine operations make comparisons between them of little value. This paper will present a valid approach to benchmarking equipment performance and reliability, accounting for the differences and similarities between operations, producing a result which can be used to add value to mines around the world.

A photochromic material is one which undergoes a change of color when exposed to light and reverts to its original color when the light is removed. Review articles carrying extensive bibliographies have been written by Brown and Shaw (1) and by Schwab and Bertelson (2). Organics. Schwab and Bertelson divide the reactions in different organic photochromic materials into some half-dozen categories; Windsor (3) reduces these to the following three main classes of general interest, based on how they work. 1. Stereoisomers. Absorption of light breaks one of the chemical bonds in a. ring molecule, thus allowing the molecule to unwind and form a different geometrical arrangement. The reverse process is a reforming of the bond. Examples of this class are the spiropyrans and the anils. 2. Dyes. A triphenyl methane dye, for example, is oxidized by energetic light; the absorption characteristics of the positive ion so formed are different from those of the original electrically neutral benzene rings. 3. Triplet States. In the class of polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons, ground-state molecules are excited first to a singlet state by irradiation, and then go, via the lowest triplet state, to an excited triplet state. Visible light is absorbed in the triplet-triplet transition.

China’s land area, comparable in size to United States or Canada, contains diverse geological environments and mineral resource potential. The diversity in geological environments is such that the potential for developing many world-class mineral deposits in China is good. However, China’s mining sector was not open to foreign investment until the1990s. The long-term prospect for Chinese resource development is attractive because of China’s enormous population and cumulative demand for minerals. Approximately 33 foreign mineral companies, including 11 major internationals, are to various degrees active in China. Chinese mining laws and regulations pertaining to joint ventures with foreign companies are, from the international investment prospective, evolving slowly, but positively. This positive trend is continuing under the current government reform process, which is moving China towards a freer market economy. Although improving the enforcement of relevant laws and regulations is an ongoing process, the environment for mineral investment and joint ventures is increasingly more accommodating to foreign companies.

AMAX Coal Company's Belle Ayr coal dryer is the first industry attempt to commercialize sub-bituminous coal drying which has been the subject of laboratory and pilot plant tests for almost two decades. This paper presents the historical background, construction, start-up and operation of this adaption of fluidized bed coal drying technology to Powder River Basin coal. The flowsheet and operational problems encountered during plant start-up are discussed together with general material balance and product quality.

In the present study, X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) spectroscopy, and Raman spectroscopy were used to investigate the effect of chloride ions on chalcopyrite bioleaching and chemical leaching at 25 °C. The leaching results show that the addition of chloride ions suppressed the dissolution of chalcopyrite in both chemical and bacterial leaching. In chemical leaching, the solution redox potential in the experiment without Cl− stayed in a range more suitable for chalcopyrite dissolution compared with experiments with Cl− . In bioleaching, the bacteria activity was suppressed by Cl− leading to low dissolution rates of Cu. Surface morphology and chemical speciation studies confirmed the formation of potassium jarosite on the surface of the chalcopyrite leach residues. In addition, S K-edge XANES indicated the formation of trace amount of elemental sulfur and covellite on the mineral surfaces.

Vermiculite is currently mined from shallow (less than 25 m or 80 ft) surface deposits throughout the world. The largest producers are Palabora Mining of Phalabowra, South Africa (ore stock is a phlogopitemica), Xinjiang Yuli Xinlong Vermiculite of Korla, China, and W.R. Grace of Enoree, SC (ore stock is a biotite mica). Smaller operations are in Australia, Brazil, Russia and Zimbabwe. They also produce vermiculite on a continuous basis but do not export any significant amounts of product to North America. Intermittent and poorly documented production on a minor scale is reported from Argentina, Egypt, India and Uganda. Worldwide vermiculite production in 2004 increased1.7 percent to 432.8 kt (477,000 st). North American production declined, while African and Chinese production continued to increase.

Value Engineering on Connecticut DOT’s Walk Bridge selected the trenchless option for utility relocation to address the channel crossing’s environmental concerns. The design and construction considerations of the twin micro-tunnel drives and associated shafts are presented. Key challenges included vertical alignment selection to achieve minimum one-tunnel diameter stable cover within thin glacial till underlying extremely soft clay, limited choice of pipe and joint materials meeting stringent non-metallic conduit requirements, thermal grout backfill application, and the close proximity of temporary trestle piles. Mitigation measures were developed for potential point loading pipe damage from remnant boulder fragments in the annular space.

Exploration expenditures in Alaska last year amounted to $8.9 million. This was comparable to 1985's $9.1 million. Development expenditures dropped 29%, $24.3 million in 1986 vs. $34.1 million in 1985. The exploration industry is restructuring and stabilizing after the loss of major mineral firms during the last few years. These included Anaconda Minerals, Asarco, Hecla Mining, Enserch Exploration, Phillips Minerals Division, Exxon Minerals, Noranda Inc., General Crude, Mohawk Oil & Gas, Inspiration Development, Teton Exploration, and St. Joe Minerals Division. Some of these companies were mineral subsidiaries of oil companies and were either dissolved or redirected to programs outside of Alaska. However, recent entry exploration firms include Echo Bay Mines Ltd., Long Lac Minerals, and Exvenco. They are busy evaluating prospects and mineral developments in the southeastern panhandle. In the 1970s, about $254 million was spent on Alaska mineral exploration. Of this, about 5% ($12 million) was for nonmetallics and coal, about 26% was directed at precious metals ($66 million) mainly gold, and 69% ($175.3 million) for the base metals zinc, copper, molybdenum, tin, tungsten, and nickel. Since the early 1980s, trends have reversed. Of the nearly $196.3 million spent from 1981-1986, 48% has been for precious metals ($94.3 million) and 40% on nonmetallics and coal. In the last two years, nearly 70% of the Alaskan exploration dollar has been spent in search of precious metals. Three gold skarns were explored during the year - the Nixon Fork project in western Alaska (Battle Mountain Mining Co.), the Nebesna and Rambler lodes of the northern Wrangell Mountains (Nebesna Mining Partners), and the Zackley project near Paxson in southcentral Alaska (Nerco Minerals). Nearly 7.6 km (25,000 ft) of diamond and rotary drilling were conducted on these three properties. A reliable estimate of radon emissions to the environment from underground uranium mines was obtained through measurements of radon in ventilation air at 24 mines and from estimates of radon release from other mine sources. The total production of U308 from the mines sampled represents about 63% of the total U.S. production from underground mines (1978 statistics). Wide variation in the radon emission rate per unit of production was found from mine to mine. Using the total radon emitted and U308 produced by all mines sampled, an average of 26.7 Ci of radon was emitted per ton of U309 produced. The investigation includes a brief study of the sources of variation of the emission rates. A statistically significant relationship was found between the measured radon release rate and the cumulative ore production at several mines.

When it comes to processing industries, speed matters. More precisely, the faster/greater the throughput of finished product out the door, the more quickly money can flow back into the corporate coffers. In this quest for greater output, no processor can afford any weak links in the chain. Especially in the case of bulk solids operations, any one piece of equipment that slows the process down jeopardizes the profitability of the entire plant. However, one clay processor uncorked a pre-existing bottleneck by replacing its outdated separating equipment with a new design that immediately improved output.

Since the Toronto conference in May 2002, the International Council on Mining and Minerals (ICMM) has made progress on the road to sustainability. Fifteen of the world?s largest mining and metal producing companies and twenty-five associations have made a long term commitment to ICMM to improve the environmental and social sustainability of their activities. Sir Robert Wilson (Rio Tinto) assumed the chairmanship of ICMM in October 2002. By December 2002, the Council had approved a Strategic Vision and an operating plan for 2003. Both have been posted on the ICMM website (www.icmm.com). ICMM?s Operating Plan sets out three priority tasks: - Providing strategic leadership to achieve improved sustainable development performance in the mining, minerals and metals industry. - Contributing to international policy discussions on cross-cutting issues of importance to the industry, in collaboration with national and commodity associations. - Promoting dialogue and partnership with other organizations to catalyze sector?wide sustainability initiatives.

The expanding applications of vibrating feeders for controlling the flow of bulk materials, and their adaptation for processing requirements, have developed considerable interest in stockpiling and reclaim systems. The general design of these units consists of a material transporting trough, or platform, driven by a vibratory force system. Design flexibility and variety is limited only by engineering ingenuity. The basic motion of the vibratory trough, or work member, is a controlled directional linear vibration that produces a material tossing or hopping action. Material travel speeds vary from 0 to about 30 m/min, depending on the combination of frequency, amplitude, and slope vibration angle.

On April 30, 2003, representatives of the Society for Mining, Metallurgy and Exploration, Inc.(SME) met with the staff of the Division of Corporation Finance of the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). The meeting was held to discuss issues related to the estimation and publication of mineral resources and ore reserves. It took place in the Washington, D.C. offices of the SEC. SEC staff members included Roger Schwall, assistant director, Division of Corporation Finance; Jill Davis, senior accountant; Roger Baer, senior mining engineer; Carl Chavez, chief mining engineer; Ron Winfrey, senior petroleum engineer; and John Murphy, senior petroleum engineer. SME committee members included JM Rendu, independent consultant and chairman of the SME Committee on Resources and Reserves; Ian Douglas, manager of deposit modeling and reserve estimation with Newmont Mining; Art Graham, director and mining engineer with Deutsche Bank Trust Company Americas; Larry Smith, chief geologist with AMEC Mining and Metals Consulting; and George MacDonald, vice president of exploration with Freeport-McMoRan Copper and Gold.

"High-pressure grinding roll (HPGR) technology was evaluated to replace tertiary cone crushing at Coeur Rochester operations (Coeur Rochester Inc.) as an opportunity to improve silver recovery. In 2016 and 2017, onsite and third-party pilot programs were initiated to evaluate the impact on metallurgical recovery and heap leach performance of crushed product generated by an HPGR. In 2018, Forte Dynamics evaluated the HPGR laboratory metallurgical data from Coeur Rochester and all third parties to develop field-scale leach curves based on new crushing scenarios. The laboratory recovery test work data were consolidated and scaled to field conditions to determine projected heap leach performance. Based on the metallurgical testing conducted, the replacement of current tertiary cone crushers with HPGR technology has the potential to increase Coeur Rochester’s silver recovery rate by 8 percentage points, from 61 percent to 69 percent, and shorten the overall timing of silver recoveries from 20 years to just more than two years.The Rochester Mine, and associated valley fill heap leach facilities is an openpit silver and gold mine located in Pershing County, NV, approximately 42 km (26 miles) northeast of the city of Lovelock. In 2017, Rochester produced approximately 4.7 million oz silver (Ag) and 51,000 troy oz gold (Au). Ore mined at Rochester is either fed directly to the primary X-Pit crusher, crushed at an in-pit crusher system, or placed directly onto a heap leach pad as run-of-mine (ROM). Both crushing circuits are comprised of three stages of crushing to produce a nominal 3/8 in. ore. Primary crushing consists of jaw crushing while secondary and tertiary crushing are composed of varying cone crushers.Historical recovery rates of crushed Rochester ore averaged 61.4 percent Ag and 95.9 percent Au over a period of 20 years (Robinson et al., 2018). These rates were derived from third-party verification of in-house metallurgical test results, crusher production and heap leach production results from 1986 through 2004 in a private report for Rochester produced by KD Engineering Co., Inc. Recovery rates are regularly verified by compositing daily samples of ore delivered to each leach pad from the X-pit crusher, in-pit crusher and/ or ROM. A proportionate split of each sample is used to generate monthly composites for metallurgical analysis utilizing column leaching and bottle roll leaching. These tests are run in a manner analogous with production conditions and deliver test results that provide expected heap leach performance. As the Rochester oxide deposit has been mineralogically and metallurgically consistent, the gold and silver recovery trends have also been consistent over the life of the project."
