British Petroleum (BP, 2005), indicates that world reserves for oil to be 1198 billion barrels, for natural gas the equivalent of 1156 billion barrels of oil and for coal the equivalent of 3219 billion barrels of oil. If we take into consideration the mean aver-age annual increase in demand of the last three years for oil, 2.6%, for natural gas, 3.9%, and for coal, 6.6%, then their respective reserves? lifespan are calculated to be 27, 34 and 38 years. Without taking into account their annual increase in demand, lifespan increases to 38, 67 and 161 years respectively. Since zero increase or perpetual increase in energy demands on finite resources is unrealistic the selection of the most suitable energy commodity for power generation rests upon the law of supply and demand of each commodity. This defines its price hence its selection for the production of cheap electricity. When the ratio of supply to demand is less than one, peak production is achieved. Any further increase in demand results in price increase to quench its demand. The Association for Oil and Gas Peak (ASPO) has calculated that when oil demand exceeds 84 million barrels/day, Peak Oil Production will be attained thus prices will start to increase in order to even demand with supply. Correspondingly, Gas Peak Production is expected to take place when demand exceeds 9.1 or 10.2 billion cubic meters/day. Peak Oil production has been calculated to take place in the current year, 2006, while Gas Peak production is estimated to take place between 2020 and 2025 provided that gas will not cover the energy deficit created from the lack of oil otherwise Gas Peak production could arrive as early as 2010. The use of coal for power generation is considered a better alternative than oil and gas if new combustion technologies with an energy efficiency of 43%, Germany, and 47%, Denmark, are adopted. These not only extend the lifespan of coal reserves but reduce also CO2 emissions by 25% and 31%, respectively. In the very near future CO2 sequestration and fixation in deep geological strata will eliminate its emissions thus rendering the use of coal the cheapest feedstock for power generation.

The Purpose of the Paper It is fitting that the first paper of a session on the Financial Aspects of Mining should be on the basic data upon which any financial discussion of a mining project must be based. The history of a mining project starts with exploration in an area considered geologically favorable for mineralization and culminates in the discovery of a body of valuable mineral material commonly known as a mineral deposit. Subsequently more detailed exploration establishes the approximate size, shape, tonnage and average grade of the deposit by surface and/or underground drilling, -surface trenching and/or underground workings. Some preliminary metallurgical testing and other studies, as required, are made at this time. Development work is then carried out to provide representative samples for determining flowsheet and metallurgical balances, preparing the deposit for production and establishing more firmly the grade and mining characteristics of the deposit. A feasibility study is then made of the engineering aspects of the project including the estimation of operating coats, the capital required to place the deposit into production, profit and return on investment. "Overburden strata deformation monitoring is one of the key problems in ground control. Using geophysical method through surface drilling to detect strata deformation is commonly used in the industry. In this paper, a geophysical method based on the distributed optical fiber sensing (DOFS) system were conducted in the laboratory, where a DOFS-based strata deformation monitoring experiment was performed with three physical models. The results show that the DOFS method precisely detects the rock mass deformation and strata structure forming with the Brillouin frequency shifts (BFS) representation. The BFS curves are divided into three phases, which reflects the horizontal three zones developed in the overburden. The BFS distribution presents a multiple stages form, the 1st stage corresponds to the caving zone and the 2nd stage corresponds to the fracture zone. Based on the multiple stages form, the evolution of the water flowing through fractured zone have been determined and the controlling effect of key strata over the water flowing fracture has been pointed out. In the end, the comparison validation proves the accuracy and reliability of this method, and it could be a new approach for the ground control research. INTRODUCTION Overburden rock strata above the work face space will propagate from slight deformation, part destruction to violent movement because of the underground coal mining. It is fundamental and an intrinsic requirement of ground control to monitor the mining-induced rock mass deformation.[1] Overburden strata have their significant mechanical behaviors and movement under damage deformation and fracture. Overburden strata deformation affect the mining ground pressure control directly, and performance in the relationship of supporting equipment and the surrounding rock, the mining-induced fracture distribution and the loss of underground water resource, the ground surface structure stability and the ecological environment.[2] From the perspective of the concept of safe and efficient scientific coal mining: the overburden strata deformation is an important part of mining method selection and reasonable supporting solutions decision which can solve the issues like the roof supporting force calculation, overburden fracture distribution and gas drainage, ground subsidence, separation of coal and rock control and top-coal recovery rate and so on. From the perspective of green and ecological mining: the overburden strata deformation is the key basis of studying the mining-induced ground subsidence and mining area ecological damage, and such engineering problem like environmental protection in mining area, ecological restoration in mining subsided land and the water conservation in fragile ecology area of mining could be solved based on it.[3-6] Therefore, the mining-induced overburden strata deformation is the key of ground control and needs to be controlled artificially."

Horsepower requirement is recognized as a most important equipment characteristic. Other critical equipment characteristics will be isolated and analyzed by traditional operations research techniques, using off-highway trucks as an archetype. A computer search technique has been developed, employing various production and cost analyses. With this model, the optimum combination of horsepower, capacity, and velocity can be found, minimizing handling cost per ton. An example of the program's use and interpretation of its results will conclude the paper.

Future haulage cost projections led Foster Yeoman Limited into developing a fully mobile crushing and conveying system at its Torr Works quarry in Somerset, England. The purpose-built system has an effective throughput of 2,500 tonnes/hour and features an Orenstein and Koppel (O & K) manufactured walking frame, a Fuller-Traylor type 54 X 74 TC gyratory crusher, and unique mobile conveyor modules designed and manufactured by Foster Yeoman. Used in a single-bench operation in this 6 million-tonne per annum limestone aggregate quarry, the system is fed at the production face by 2 Caterpillar 992C loading shovels. The entire system is moved on a daily basis following production face locations.

Jetbelt is the trade name for the air supported belt conveyor. It does not use troughing rollers. Jetbelt conveyors support the conveyor belt on a thin film of air. The belt rides in a steel trough which has small holes equally spaced along the bottom of the trough. Air comes through the holes under the belt, thereby supporting the belt. The air pressure is provided by a single centrifugal blower that creates very low pressure, between 249 Pa and747 Pa [10" and 30" water column], depending upon the tonnage being conveyed. The volume of air required ranges between .001415 m3/S and .00283 m3/S [3 and 6 CFM] per lineal foot of conveyor. Therefore, depending on tonnage being conveyed, a 304.8m[1000'] conveyor might require as little as 1.415m3/S [3000 CFM] or as much as 2.83m3/S [6000 CFM.]. (See Figure 1) Horsepower requirements can be less than troughing idler conveyors and considerably less than some other forms of bulk conveying. Savings are most significant in horizontal and down hill (regenerative) conveyor designs. Horsepower to lift material, of course, does not change.

The mineralogy and textures of cyclone dust, sludge, and occasional build-ups in the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) direct iron making pilot plant at Universal, Pennsylvania have been studied by reflected light, transmitted light, and cathodoluminescence microscopy, and phase compositions have been determined by SEM-EDS. The cyclone dust consists of particles of carbon, metallic iron, sulfur-bearing iron, and wustite. Measurements of particles in the sludge indicate that 69% are less than 2.5 µm across, 21 % are 2.5-5 µm, and 10% are larger than 5 µm. Mineralogically the sludge particles are mainly carbon and metallic iron, with minor wustite and sulfur-bearing iron. Build-ups that sporadically develop in the furnace consist of olivine, hercynite spinel, metallic iron, wustite, pyrrhotite, pseudobrookite, akermanite-ferroakermanite and gehlenite. The microtextures shown by the build-ups indicate that much of that material has precipitated at the build-up loci. This study has been supported by AISI and the U.S. Department of Energy.

Previous models describing the aggregation of polymer coated particles fail to take into account the fact that there are a limited number of sites onto which a polymer segment can adsorb, called ?active? sites. Thus, the collision efficiency is a factor not only of the fractional surface coverage, but also of the number of active sites. In this study, a physical model of the flocculation system was devised in which the number of these sites could be varied, in order to study the effect on particle aggregation.

Conventional mine safety wisdom states that "the most efficient mines are also the safest." Since the 1980s, small mines (and contractors) have been targeted as the most dangerous ones because of their fatality records. Statistical testing of 1993 West Virginia safety and production data indicated that the most efficient WV mines were not the safest ones, considering correlations between the severity measure and tons per employee-hour, except for very small mines. This paper will present the results of an extended analysis of WV mine safety using 1993 and 1996 data, concluding with the method used to suggest current priorities for focusing interventions.

Large surface mining projects in sparsely populated regions of the West have the potential to create disruptions in an area's social and economic character with potential effects on man that can far outweigh the physical and ecological effects on man's environment. The data and analyses involved in addressing the socioeconomic issues are additional to those traditionally associated with surface coal mining, such as those concerning land reclamation and water quality. Appropriate socioeconomic studies in conjunction with mine-planning can identify the potential problem areas in order that project measures can be taken to maximize the beneficial impacts and minimize the adverse effects of surface coal mining. The information required to conduct such socioeconomic analyses, available data sources, and the applicable analyses are described. Overall impacts of some proposed Western surface mines are summarized and potential mitigating steps discussed.

"Istanbul Strait Road Tube Crossing Project (Eurasia Tunnel) includes 3.34 km of a bored double-deck tunnel under the Bosphorus Strait, at a maximum depth of 106 m from the sea level, and 1 km of twin NATM tunnels on the Asian side. The region’s variable geology, hydrology and propensity for seismic activity, combined with high water pressure and large-diameter/double-deck tunnel configuration, make the Eurasia Tunnel one of today’s most challenging and complex projects under construction. Due to the site’s proximity to the active North Anatolian Fault, the tunnel is designed to withstand a 7.5 magnitude earthquake. The tunnel penetrates through both the Trakya bedrock (on both European and Asian sides) and the alluvial sediments at the bottom of the channel. The tunnel is designed to accommodate differential displacements by introducing seismic/flexible joints at proper locations at the transition zones between rock and soft soils. Tunnel fire is also a significant design consideration for undersea tunnel due to that the rubber protecting it in close proximity of the seismic joint should resist a fire for long term safety and durability. This paper mainly focuses on the design for method of tunnel response analysis in transverse and longitudinal direction against seismic demands relating with the seismic joints. INTRODUCTION Istanbul Strait Road Tube Crossing Project (Eurasia Tunnel) will build and operate a roadway tunnel under the Borphorus connecting Kazlicesme on the European side and Goztepe on the Asian side, to provide additional road-access across the Strait and consist of three main parts as shown in Figure 1."

The Los Angeles County Transportation Authority’s Purple Line Extension Phase 1 is a $3.12 billion (USD) design-build, underground heavy rail project, connecting an existing station at Wilshire Boulevard and Western Avenue and extending west 3.92 miles under Wilshire Boulevard and terminating approximately 550 feet west of Wilshire/La Cienega Station. The project alignment runs through the heart of the world famous La Brea Tar Pits and one of the world’s largest urban oil elds. This paper presents a case history of the planning, design, and construction efforts to achieve successful construction of the bored tunnels through Reach 3 of the alignment. Further, this paper outlines the proactive partnership between the owner, Los Angeles County Metro (Metro), the Design Builder, Skanska-Traylor-Shea oint enture (STS), and Southwest Geophysics who provided the geophysical services. Specically, the project included background review of historic site data (e.g., oil eld maps, building foundation plans, historic aerial photographs, etc.), geophysical demonstration testing to ascertain the capability of borehole magnetics to detect oil wells, directional drilling of thousands of feet of horizontal and vertical boreholes, collection of high resolution magnetic gradiometer data along vertically and horizontally cased boreholes as well as the collection of surface magnetometer data, discovery (“ground truthing”) of detected geophysical anomalies, and abatement of potential obstructions within the tunnel alignment.

This study investigates upgrading of low-grade banded hematite quartzite iron ore (Fe ~31%). Conventional beneficiation was found to be futile. The susceptibility of iron phases to microwave exposure and their selective absorption assists in the liberation of iron values. Microwave exposure of coarse particles at 540 W for 10 min yielded a concentrate with Fe 56.30% and recovery of 50.68%. Conventional carbothermic reduction at 500 °C, 60 min and 9% charcoal yielded a concentrate with Fe 57.6% and iron recovery of 68%. The presence of sufficiently bonded silica leads to an easy formation of a fayalite phase. The microwave reduction design yielded FeG of 57.6%, FeR of 47% and a yield of 24% at an optimal condition of 540 W, 8 min and 6% charcoal. It was found that a small fraction of microwave-irradiated ore-charcoal mixture melted rapidly, and pure ferrite balls were observed within 8 min. An optical micrograph of a ferrite ball reveals the retained austenite and martensite phase.

In this work, a comprehensive field study was carried out to measure the background air quality status and identify the air pollution sources from opencast mines around a heritage site in India. Air quality modeling was conducted to envisage dust concentration due to existing and closed mines in the region. The air quality modeling exercise predicted that particulate-matter levels of PM10 and PM2.5 might increase in the ranges of 3.2 to 23.1 and 2.1 to 8.9 μg/m3, respectively, due to mining activities when some of the closed mines will be operated in the region without controlled emission. The predicted total PM10 and PM2.5 at the selected receptor locations were in the ranges of 86.39 to 194.89 and 34.82 to 99.55 μg/m3, respectively. Adequate measures were suggested to control air pollution from mining activities, and an intelligent dry fog system was designed to suppress dust emission efficiently from mineral processing plants and opencast mines. The developed system has special features for facilitating eco-friendly mining.

During the past decade, operators and researchers have worked toward a better understanding of the mechanisms operating in flotation. As reported by W. J. Trahar in 1981, this work commenced with the operators determining a relationship between recovery and particle size. They defined three particle size ranges, that being fine, intermediate and coarse. It was noted that the fine and the coarse ranges had slower flotation rates than the intermediate range as demonstrated by their lower recoveries.

The mining industry is currently looking to better understand, anticipate, and be able to mitigate business and operational risks in order to deliver the rewards of risk taking, and to minimize the frequency and impact of risk on the downside. Assessing risk works from the premise that the identification and management of existing risks can be very challenging, especially when threats are not easy to detect, the likelihood of occurrence is difficult to gauge, and/or the consequences are uncertain. Some approach this as a ?check the box? task, even though fire and safety incidents continue to occur and investigations often find the hazard analyses did not properly identify the cause or consequence. You cannot engineer protective designs and safeguards for causes and consequences that have not been identified appropriately. For the mining industry, risk management is an important tool for making critical decisions and, in some cases, meeting regulatory requirements. Providing high-quality documentation that meets both regulatory and corporate requirements is critical for maintaining safe, uninterrupted mining operations. Risk management is a five-part process: 1. Identify the hazards and their causes, 2. Determine the hazard consequences, 3. Calculate the frequency of occurrence, 4. Quantify the risk associated with the system, process, or procedure, and 5. Provide feasible solutions for the risks

"Location. The copper mines of Michigan are all in the northern part of that state on the Keweenaw Peninsula, which extends from the (Michigan) mainland for about seventy miles northeasterly toward the middle of Lake Superior. The mines occur in a belt or zone occupying the central portion of the peninsula from end to end.. The most productive mines for many years past have been those located not far from the city of Houghton in' the central part of the zone, in a section extending about ten miles southwest of Houghton and fifteen miles northeast. The most important mines in order of location, from the northeast to south¬west, are the following: Mohawk, Ahmeek, Allouez, North Kearsarge, Wolverine, South Kearsarge, Centennial, Calumet. and Hecla, Osceola, Franklin, Quincy, Hancock, Isle Royale, Superior, Baltic, Trimountain, and Champion. The first three named are in Keweenaw county and all of the others are in Houghton county. Still farther to the southwest are the Lake, Mass, Adventure, Michigan, Victoria, and White Pine mines. These are in Ontonagon county.History. The exploitation of these copper mines extends back into prehistoric times. There is little evidence that the American Indians carried on mining operations in this region in the period shortly before the advent of white men, but there is abundant evidence that the ancestors of the Indians, •or some earlier inhabitants of the region, carried on primitive mining operations. For example, Mr. S. O. Knapp, Agent of the Minne¬sota Mining Company, in the winter of 1847-48, made the first discovery of prehistoric mining. The permeability in the blast furnace shaft is adversely affected by low temperature reduction degradation of sinters. The fundamental cause is an expansion of the iron oxide phase resulting from reduction of hematite to magnetite. The present study showed that expansion behavior during the hematite / magnetite reduction step and the resulting microstructure are strongly influenced by the reduction temperature (viz. partial oxygen pressure), the reducing agent and the nature of the hematite. The reduction rate is of minor importance. A reduction mechanism is proposed, explaining the dilation behavior and the magnetite microstructure. The results can provide better insight into reduction degradation behavior.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines and others have conducted a number of occupational exposure surveys since the publication of the International Agency for Research on Cancer report of 1989, which labeled diesel exhaust as a probable human carcinogen. These surveys have assessed diesel exhaust exposure using measurement of diesel aerosol and/or specific polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons as indicators of exposure. This paper reviews present diesel emission standards, available diesel exhaust aerosol measurement techniques, and the results of the occupational exposure surveys. In the surveys, diesel aerosol was emphasized because it is a major component of diesel exhaust, is suspected to contribute to the health hazard, and is readily measurable. Three primary aerosol measurement techniques were used: respirable combustible dust, size-selective sampling, and measurement of the elemental carbon fraction. Occupations surveyed included mine workers, railroad workers, forklift operators, fire fighters and truck drivers. The studies found mean diesel aerosol concentration levels in the range of 0.004 to 1.74 mg/m3? Highest aerosol exposures were in confined spaces such as mines where heavy diesel equipment is used. Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons typically are found at very low concentration levels and are not unique to diesel exhaust.

The Bay Park Conveyance Project was one of the largest microtunneling and rehab projects in the United States at the time of completion. The completed project conveys treated water from the South Shore Water Reclamation Facility located in Nassau County, New York, which currently discharges an average of 50 million gallons per day (MGD) of treated water into Reynolds Channel, to the Cedar Creek Water Pollution Control Plant (WPCP) ocean outfall pipe. The pipe carrying treated wastewater was installed approximately 20–60 feet below the surface. The treated wastewater is conveyed via microtunnel construction of a 2-mile long force main from the South Shore Water Reclamation Facility to an existing aqueduct under the Sunrise Highway, the rehabilitation of an 7.3-mile stretch of the aqueduct via sliplining, and construction via microtunnel of a 1.6-mile-long force main to connect the rehabilitated aqueduct to the existing Cedar Creek Water Pollution Control Plant (WPCP) outfall, which discharges and diffuses treated water three miles offshore in the Atlantic Ocean. This paper will review the Design-Build requirements, the chosen innovative solutions during planning for the micro tunneling portion of the project and review the microtunnel construction on the project.
