The weathering of coal mine waste rock releases iron, calcium, sulfate and associated trace elements like selenium [Se], which are introduced to seepage waters. Nitrogen species, such as nitrate and ammonia, are also found in association with coal-mining drainages mainly due to leaching of residual blasting compounds. Elevated concentrations of Se are a ubiquitous occurrence in coal mining environments in British Columbia, with values ranging from below 50 to over 500 µg/L in site waters. Selenate is the most common form of selenium found in waste rock seepages, and is exceedingly mobile in aerobic freshwaters. A major concern with waterborne Se in British Columbia is the potential for its bioaccumulation in aquatic food chains. Treatment to remove Se from coal-mining wastewaters has proven to be challenging for conventional water treatment technologies. Compounding this challenge, many streams are characterized by high flows and low selenium concentrations. Conventional membrane and ion exchange treatments produce concentrated brine streams that are difficult to treat or require disposal. Conventional biotreatment systems use excess nutrients to provide the required electrons to compensate for inefficient and variable electron availability, as well as to adjust reactor chemistry. The Electro-Biochemical Reactor (EBR) technology provides electrons to the microbes directly at a low voltage potential (1-3 V), supplying a controllable and consistent supply of useable electrons to the system and microbes at low current. In this manner, the EBR technology overcomes the shortcomings found in conventional systems, as it reduces the required nutrient addition and provides a more controllable, efficient, economical, and robust biotreatment system than found in past generations of biological treatment systems. Additionally, the EBR process does not produce excess solids or biomass; therefore, solids management post-treatment is not required. Laboratory EBR bench-scale and on-site pilot-scale systems were used to treat five British Columbia coal mine wastewaters; influent Se concentrations ranged from 35 µg/L to 531 µg/L. Se treatment targets for the tested waters ranged from 5 to 10 µg/L. Mean Se concentrations in EBR effluents ranged from 0.5 µg/L to 1.4 µg/L, while reducing sulfate concentrations. The test data demonstrate that the EBR technology is an effective Se removal option for British Columbia?s coal-mining wastewaters.

As part of its mission to develop technology to assure a continuing supply of minerals, the US Bureau of Mines has investigated the flocculation of a Stillwater, MT, chromite ore. The ore was flocculated at different solids contents and at different stirring speeds to determine the importance and effect of hydrodynamic factors. In acidic and basic pH, the chromite ore was flocculated with high molecular weight polyacrylamides differing in the degree of hydrolysis. Polyacrylamides were found to bind to chromite ore particles through hydrogen bonding. The anionicity of the polymer and the pH affected the degree of polymer-particle interaction, which in turn affected polymer conformation at the surface. A polymer conformation with many loops and tails was used to explain high flocculation efficiency. It was found that such a conformation could compensate for poor hydrodynamic conditions.

Gold has always been a crisis investment. For centuries gold has been considered globally the money of last resort. In time of war, inflation, financial uncertainty, political upheaval there has with few exceptions always been a flight to gold. The gold paradox simply is that even though we have gone through for the past handful of years all the kinds of. anxieties that would cause the gold price to rise, it has instead dropped drastically. Figure 1. illustrates the important factors that influenced the gold price significantly up or down before 1987. Obviously, since then, even though we have had wars, inflation, financial problems involving breaking banks and thrifts let alone collapsing financial institutions, the gold price has both in the long-term and the short-term trended downwards. Figure 2. depicts the gold price path since 1987. If the presence of time-honored and time-tested factors that should have driven the gold price up didn't do the job, then logic dictates that new factors to drive the gold price down and keep it depressed arose. And they did. But before addressing these depressants permit me to turn to the arcane art of gold price prediction and fore-casting.

Kinetics studies and other rate measurements are reviewed in the amine extraction of uranium and of some other related and associated metal ions. Equilibration' is relatively fast in the uranium sulfate systems most important to uranium-hydrometallurgy. Significantly slow; equilibration-has ' been encountered' in some other systems. Most of the recorded rate information, both qualitative and quantitative; has come from exploratory and, process-development development work, while some kinetics studies have been directed specifically toward elucidation of, extraction mechanisms. In contrast to some other extraction systems, relatively little attention has been given to the kinetics of uranium extraction by amines. This is because investigators have not been troubled by slow extractions. Instead, when rate limitations have been of concern in amine extraction (Amex) process developments, they have been mainly from slow phase disengagement rather than from slow equilibration. Nevertheless, taking uranium together with several other elements that are closely related to it or associated with it in typical processes, a considerable body of rate information has been recorded.

As tunnel boring machine technology has expanded, so has its range of application. Tunneling machines (TBM's) are tackling tasks today that fifteen years ago were considered "inappropriate". A case in point is incline/decline TBM boring. An incline or decline bore presents peculiar design considerations that differentiate it from a horizontal bore. This paper reviews those design considerations as they apply to TBM's, backup, muck handling and other tunneling subsystems. In addition, several abbreviated case studies are presented. By the review of real life tunneling techniques as well as design considerations, the "appropriateness" of TBM incline/ decline boring today becomes apparent. INCLINE Introduction In contemplating the impact of incline versus horizontal tunnel boring system design, the obvious consideration is gravity. Up-hill boring can be quite different than horizontal boring. Muck, water and machine weight all tend to slide down the incline. In addition, hydraulic and lubrication systems if unaltered, will find their fluids pooled in the lower corners contentedly ignoring such higher elevation items as gears and bearings. The most common approach used in the mining industry for mineral resources modeling is to estimate the grades using ordinary kriging and report the recoverable resources based on this deterministic estimated model. Mineral resources calculated with kriging are a smooth representation of the actual distribution of grades and do not provide an assessment of uncertainty. Unlike kriging, simulation reproduces the variability of the grades in the mineral deposit and provides an assessment of uncertainty. Reporting mineral resources directly on high-resolution simulation results would assume perfect knowledge of the grade at the time of mining and selectivity at the scale of the data. There will always be uncertainty left at the time of mining, so assuming perfect knowledge of the grade in the future is incorrect. There are two concerns when geostatistical simulation is used for resources modeling: the information and the mining selectivity effects. A new framework for resource estimation is proposed with two separate modules to address those concerns. The information effect is accounted for by anticipating the additional production data that will be available at the time mining to guide the destination for the mined material. The mining selectivity effect is addressed by mimicking the grade control procedure to get mineable dig limits at a chosen selectivity, represented by a minimum mineable unit size. In addition to a prediction of recoverable resources that will be closer to the material mined in the future, the framework proposed provides an assessment of local and global uncertainty for risk management.

At LKAB's plants in Lappland, Sweden, sintered pellets are manu-factured according to three different industrial processes, viz. shaft furnace at Malmberget, straight-grate at Kiruna and grate-kiln at Svappavaara. At present the total annual capacity amounts to 4.7 million tons. However, since it has been decided to erect a new straight-grate plant (2.5 million tons) at Malmberget, and because of the decision to extend and rebuild the existing plants, it is estimated that the annual capacity will be increased to somewhat over 8 million tons by 1973. The great majority of the pellets produced is exported. They are thus reloaded several times and generally speaking roughly handled, resulting in larger or smaller product losses on arrival at the point of use. It is there-fore of great economical interest to have a good control over the transport strength of the pellets by appropriate quality testing at the point of production. In addition to good transport strength, further demands are ob-viously made on pellets destined for blast furnace operation. The blast furnace burden must maintain a good permeability for the gas. The pellets must thus have a favourable size distribution and must not be so weakened by reduction that they disintegrate under the stresses and clog the blast furnace shaft. Furthermore, the burden must have good reducibility. An increase of the rate of reduction can obviously mean increased blast furnace capacity and reduced coke consumption. In order to optimise the properties of the pellets in these respects, the producer must also be thoroughly familiar with their behaviour during reduction, particularly as the customer's interest in the reduction properties of the pellets' has increased over the last few years. Up to now the only quality demands the customer has made have generally had to do with the cold strength and the screen analysis. Thus a quality control of in addition to good transport strength, further demands are obviously made on pellets destined for blast furnace operation. But recently these issues have been played one against the other, and some would have us believe they are mutually exclusive. Why? Because modern man has realized that the shortest route to achieving economic progress is to subdue nature. He extracts mineral resources from the earth to provide the raw materials upon which other processes and services are based. But often in his search for economic progress he finds that other highly- held values (e.g., an unspoiled environment) have been violated. The natural response is a counter action - to attempt to protect nature. But this response is basically unsatisfactory because it is reactive.

Laboratory column leach tests are used routinely to evaluate gold and silver ores for heap leaching. The tests are fairly straightforward. The ore to be tested is placed into an appropriately sized leach column. Then an alkaline cyanide solution is applied to the ore and the effluent solutions are collected. The effluent solutions are then put through a column of activated carbon to recover the gold and silver in solution. Zinc precipitation may also be used for silver ores or if the ore contains a significant amount of soluble silver in addition to gold. The length of the leach time in the tests is mainly a function of how quickly the precious metals are recovered from the ore. At the completion of the tests, the tailings are assayed and the recoveries determined from the calculated head grades. The amount of ore to be used for a test is partly a function of its crushed size. The coarser the size, the larger the sample size for the column. A typical small-scale laboratory column test on ore crushed to -12 mm (-0.5 in.) would usually be conducted in a 100- to 150-mm-diam (4- to 6-in.-diam) column 2 m (6.6 ft) in height, containing about 20 to 45 kg (44 to 99 lb) of ore. A comparable test on the same ore crushed to 50 mm (2 in.) would be conducted in a 200- to 300-mm-diam (8- to 12-in.-diam) col¬umn 2 m (6.6 ft) in height, containing about 80 to 200 kg (176 to 441 lb) of ore. The evolution of trapped geothermal heat in hot underground mine along with emission of toxic gases and dust during mine activity makes the mine environment unfavorable is hazardous to worker’s health. This imposes significant demand on cooling and ventilation systems. As a result, substantial costs are incurred while implementing environmental regulation processes to dissipate the heat and provide comfortable working conditions. Thus, as an alternative, the development of cost effective materials to act as efficient thermal insulators is on the rise. Thermal conductivity is an important property that is a direct measure of a material’s ability to facilitate/deter heat flow. In addition to their superior chemical resistance, adequate mechanical strength, abrasion and fire retardant as well as environmental benefits in comparison to existing building materials such as ordinary Portland cement, aluminosilicate based geopolymers are now gaining widespread interest as promising thermally insulating and sustainable materials. This paper begins with an overview of geopolymers, transitioning into a discussion of recent developments in the field of geopolymer development as a thermally insulating material broadly classified into: filled geopolymers and porous geopolymers resulting in structures with enhanced ability to impede heat flow.

"INTRODUCTION There is no doubt about the time and effort companies put in establishing and maintaining their equipment. However, the question about how these companies can map the benefits comes up. Neither do they have the tools to quantify the benefit of their action, nor do they have the tools to know the actual quality of their current maintenance system. The resources used in the process seem futile to observers. It seems impossible to trace improvements and to get information about the impact of actions in retrospect. Improvements in maintenance performance cannot be recognised by management or shareholders. Thus the necessity for measuring the performance of maintenance systems is given. In this paper ConMoto is systematically showing the strengths and weaknesses of many companies' maintenance management and is providing field-tested proven design elements for measuring maintenance systems and implementing Value Oriented Maintenance. Considering only business assets in production facilities and related machinery out of all investment goods in Europe, you reach a value of around 9.7 trillion euros in 2008. In Germany alone the equipment replacement value amounted to about 1.9 trillion euros [8,10,11,13]. If you calculate a cross sector maintenance costs rate of 4.8 % (corresponding to the average value identified in this study), direct maintenance costs in European production locations add up to over 450 billion euros per year [3]. These figures speak for themselves. Yet maintenance is not only of enormous significance for European enterprises. Our experiences show that maintenance and asset management, particularly sustainability issues, are also increasingly moving to the forefront in the BRIC states, in the Middle East and in many emerging countries. First of all, in order to meet the resulting high quality and cost related requirements of maintenance systems, a comprehensive overview of the issue is needed. This overview is provided by a detailed analysis of 83 companies and production plants from various sectors – with amazing results. SIGNIFICANCE OF MAINTENANCE Current studies show the high financial significance of maintenance and asset management. According to the market study in the Asset Manager [9], in industrialised countries about 10 to 15 per cent of the labour force are employed in maintenance and facility management tasks. In Europe about 40 to50 million people are directly and indirectly involved in retaining the value of machinery, plants, buildings, transport systems and infrastructure facilities. A glance at the costs side also demonstrates the great relevance of maintenance. EU-wide annual direct maintenance costs amount to a total of more than 1,500 billion euros. In Germany alone they are about 250 billion euros. This impressive total is considerably exceeded by indirect maintenance costs caused by technical failures. Indirect costs are estimated to be five times higher (Figure 1). [7,12,14]"

Underground mining is a dynamic art and science with a diverse set of design, production, and economic criteria that must be considered before selecting an optimal method to extract the ore. While all methods can be technically classified as either self-supported, supported, or caving, the multitude of subsystems and existing variations bear witness to the fact that each orebody is unique and, as such, justifies an individual approach to optimize mineral extraction. In this sense, underground mining is an art. The ability to evaluate the unique characteristics of each ore body and utilize sound engineering principles to design the optimal system constitutes effective method selection. The task by no means ends at this juncture, however. Subsequent implementation requires an ability for modification. Very rarely are all the facts available to make a concrete decision prior to development of the resource. As a result, the risk of a wrong decision can never be eliminated. This requires a significant degree of flexibility with each method. Each unit of exploration, development, or exploitation work contributed to a deposit enhances knowledge of the ore body. The best mining methods are those that correctly account for the known parameters but provide an allowance for change at minimal cost and adapt to unanticipated conditions.

A minitest of the new potassium chloride-potassium carbonate two-stage in situ uranium leach process has been carried out at the Intercontinental Energy Corporation (IEC) Zamzow project site in South Texas. Substantial quantities of high concentration uranium were produced indicating the viability of the leach solution. The test results yield information regarding the reservoir dispersivity, the average cation-exchange capacity of the formation, and the distribution coefficients describing carion-exchange reactions. The test a1 so indicates permeability anisotropy and the existence of disturbed flow fields. The research was partially funded by the U.S. Bureau of Mines.

WHAT IS AI? It's very hard to say. Most researchers and practitioners disagree with nearly any attempted definition, but most would agree that A1 does deal with the development of computer-related methods o f problem-solving. Artificial intelligence is a discipline which seeks to emulate human anatomy and/or thought processes by applying computer science, electronics, and mechanical engineering to the development of natural language processing, machine vision, robotics, and knowledge-based expert systems. Integration of these four fields will someday produce the robots of today's science fiction. A1 addresses problems of structuring large amounts of knowledge and representing relationships with rules and semantic frameworks rather than with mathematical equations. A1 is convergent rather than divergent - - conventional conputer applications use relatively small quantities of input to generate large output, but A1 generally reduces large amounts of information to establish a few major conclusions. The development of A1 has prompted greatly increased efforts on the part of scientists and engineers to understand just how humans think, organize information, approach problem-solving, and form conclusions. Some of the more exciting and possibly far-reaching advances in A1 are coming in this more-or-less soft-science area. Thirty years of A1 research (dating from a 1956 conference at Dartmouth College at which the term A1 was coined) has already spawned many widespread, almost ordinary, products: window graphics, hand-held controllers (mouse). function menus, etc., all in an attempt to make computers and people more compatible. WHAT IS AN ES? A1 can be used to develop EXPERT SYSTEMS, which are computer programs or systems which contain knowledge and rules by which problems can be solved. or at least by which possible solutions can be suggested for very complex problems. A1 can be used to better define problems so that solutions can be found. An ES is designed not to process numbers, but to process information according to rules and logic derived from actual practice and experience. WHY AI? WHY ES? Companies are increasingly aware of the value of accumulated knowledge and experience in designing, building, operating, and maintaining the increasingly complex or expensive physical plants in any business. As knowledge branches out and becomes more specialized, the accumulated learning of a veteran operator or manager or engineer becomes a scarce resource well worth preserving. EXPERT SYSTEMS offer a means of doing that, reinforcing, not replacing, human capabilities.

Geologically, as distinct from economically, "porphyry copper (molybdenum, gold, silver, etc.) deposits" might be defined as large, disseminated and/or stock-work occurrences of copper-minerals, generally averaging less than 1 per cent cop-per. They are normally associated with small plutons which range in composition from granite to diorite, although, typically, they consist of quartz monzonite or granodiorite. Circumstantial evidence indicates that these "minor" granitic intrusions may represent the intrusive phases of post-orogenic, calc-alkaline volcanism, this conclusion being suggested by: 1. Texture and grain size. 2. Prevalence of intrusive breccias. 3. Relationship to unconformities and estimated depth of emplacement. 4. Spatial distribution in relation to orogenic zones. 5. This article deals with the effects of high-explosive and nuclear explosions in rock masses. We first highlight the strong influence of geological discontinuities, such as joints and faults, on ground motion characteristics. Then, we briefly introduce the Discrete Element Method, as a new technique for numerical simulations. II is shown to be far superior to continuum-based approaches, when dealing with the dynamics of discontinuous media such as jointed rocks. Finally, we simulate the ground effects from a generic contained nuclear explosion, which bears some similarity to the SHOAL event in granite. This calculation is intended to emphasize the influence of the near-source geology on the distribution of energy, and on the motion at various azimuths in the medium.

The Azores islands are located on a triple junction where the American, African (AFR), and Euroasian (EUR) plates meet. The Mid-Atlantic Ridge (MAR), oriented N-S, represents two branches of the T; an E-W branch defines the EUR/AFR boundary called the Terceira Rift. The nature and structure of this plate boundary, as well as the dynamics of the interaction of tectonics and volcanism remain unconstrained. The Azores plateau is seated on a mantle domain of anomalously low seismic S-wave velocities, and gravity and geoid anomalies, where the apparent thick crust is thought to relate to larger degrees of melting initiated at greater depths [1]. The cause of these anomalies is controversial but many authors consider the presence of an anomalously hot/wet enriched mantle probably supplied by a plume [2]. The geochemistry of the subaerial and most submarine lavas from the plateau reinforces the plume model beneath the Azores [3-4]. The origin, size and present location of the plume is under debate but an area near Terceira is the favoured plume centre [5]. [ ] SEAFLOOR HYDROTHERMAL SYSTEMS IN THE AZORES AREA (36ºN ? 40ºN) More than 150 active and fossil hydrothermal systems are known in the oceanic seafloor [6].
