The effect of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) on growth and respiration of Thiobacillus, thiooxidans, and Thiobacillus ferrooxidans, organisms involved in acid leaching of copper sulfide minerals and uranium oxides, was examined. Oxygen uptake and growth by T. thiooxidans were inhibited after contact with 0.82 mM H2O2. Inhibition of oxygen uptake by T. ferrooxidans occurred at 8.24 mM H2O2, and growth was inhibited after 6 hours exposure to 2.06 mM H2O2. Higher concentrations of H2O2 can be used without detriment to thiobacilli if it is dissipated prior to reaching the oxidation pond or dump surface. Willowstick has successfully employed a new Seismic Acoustic Resonance (SAR) method to improve seepage characterization through, beneath, and around dams. SAR is a passive seismic method that detects zones of higher permeability in the foundation and fill materials of a dam. Just as the ocean has tides, the earth’s crust experiences daily “Earth Tides” and is constantly in motion. Continual motion produces resonance signals that can be measured, interpreted, and modeled to identify zones of higher permeability within a dam and its foundation. The SAR results are analyzed in conjunction with the traditional Willowstick Method to better characterize seepage flow paths and patterns trough, beneath, or around a dam in three dimensions. When both methodologies, which use entirely different scientific principles, identify the same anomalous feature, a higher degree of confidence is gained in the results of the investigation. Willowstick has effectively utilized the SAR method on many successful dam seepage investigations. The two geophysical techniques when used in parallel have yielded complimentary results, with both methods providing beneficial information about seepage locations. This paper will detail seepage flow paths identified using both Willowstick and SAR methods for two case study tailings dams in Canada and the United States.

Introduction Powered supports in longwall mines essentially operate under two conditions: 1. Static (non-working) 2. Dynamic (working) There is a variety of static conditions which may exist in a mine. These may include a temporary stoppage of work for a few minutes or stoppage of work for days because of strikes or lack of demand for coal. Studies on pressure behavior were made during brief stoppages of work (few hours) as well as a long stoppage of work (two weeks). In dynamic conditions, the pressure variation on supports is expected to follow a certain pattern. However, in many cases that does not happen. Pressure-time characteristics of each leg of the supports were studied. This paper discusses the research findings of the studies made on powered support pressure behavior under both static and dynamic conditions. Studies on Pressure Variation in Static Conditions It has been noted (Brenner et a1.,1975) that the pressure distribution on mechanized longwall faces is random in nature and changes with time and position along the face. Figure 1 and Figure 2 show the distribution of support pressures for the front left leg of supports in two different mines. In both the cases it can be seen that the variation of the support pressures along the face is indeed absolutely random. However, the nature of randomness in both the cases is very different. The data in Figure 1 (Mine 1) is much more random than the data in Figure 2 (Mine 2). This can also be seen from the standard deviation of the data (81 26 Pa versus 4000 pa) . By comparing the results of ten other sets of data the same conclusions can be arrived at. Since it was found that in Mine 1, the pressure on support legs was extremely random, batches of ten supports each were taken and the mean pressure plotted. This mean pressure line is shown in Figure 1. It was expected that this would smooth out the variation due to individual props and reveal a better picture of the support pressure distribution. For the case cited, the standard deviation is lowered to 5043 Pa from 8126 Pa which indicates that, on an average, the supports tend to take loads more uniformly, however for individual support legs the load on the supports is very random. The significance of this is that, if the supports are selected on the basis of theoretical load calculations alone (based on the roof block concept or some other concept), only the mean value of the support load required will be known. In the case of a pressure distribution with a high standard deviation, some supports selected on the basis of mean value will fail, while others will be supporting low loads. Hence, for proper selection of support capacity, it is not only necessary to know the average load but also the expected nature of the distribution. The only reason why the supports are supporting the roof in Mine 1 well is the fact that the yield load is above the highest level of load attained. If Mine 2, which has a much higher average load, had the same sort of standard deviation, the loads on the individual legs could easily exceed the support load. For example, if the pressure distribution followed a normal curve and the mean pressure was 36,700 Pa with a standard deviation of 9000 Pa, it is possible that 67% of the supports will be within the pressure range of 36,700 plus or minus 9,000 Pa, or 22,700 and 45,700 Pa. Many of the supports could then exceed the yield load of 40,000 Pa. It is clear then that the mean load is an inadequate criterion for estimating support resistance. The nature of the problem is statistical and such an analysis should therefore be made as far as pressure data are concerned. Statistical Analysis of Pressure Data. Deep-sea manganese nodules are considered to be potential ores of manganese, nickel, cobalt, and copper. Considerable time, effort, and funds have been applied to the study of Se distribution of nodules on the sea floor and the location of economically important areas, but little effort has been spent in understanding the origin of nodules. Most theories that have been proposed to explain the origin of manganese nodules have been based on inorganic physicochemical processes. It is not by coincidence, however, that the area considered to be most economically feasible is in the zone of high biological productivity in the eastern equatorial Pacific Ocean and underlain by siliceous biogenic sediment. The genesis of manganese nodules and the concentration of many trace elements are intimately associated with biological processes.

"In May 2015 the New Monte Bianco aerial cableway, operating on the Italian side, have been completed. It connects the lower station in Pontal d’Entreves (1300 metres above sea level (m a.s.l.)) with the intermediate station at Pavillon de Mont Frety (2160 m a.s.l.) and with the top station at Helbronner Peak (3460 m a.s.l.). A new underground link between Helbronner Peak and New Torino Refuge has also been built. The link is divided into two different sections: the first one, a 70 meters deep vertical pit created using the “Raise Boring”, descends underground from Helbronner Peak station; the second section, a 160 meters long sub horizontal tunnel, emerges at Torino Refuge. After a first introduction focused on the general layout of the project, the paper will present the geomechanical survey aimed to evaluate the effect of permafrost on the stability of intensely fractured granitic mass. Finally, it will describe the relevant issues related to the highest construction yard in Europe (3400 m a.s.l.): difficult conditions such as extremely cold and windy weather and restricted spaces. INTRODUCTION The new cable way connects the lower station in Pontal d’Entreves (1300 m a.s.l.), close to Courmayeur, with the top station at Helbronner Peak (3462 m a.s.l.) and its territory, as well as links with France and, through the French territory, with the town of Chamonix (1000 m a.s.l.). The overall layout is divided into two sections (as shown in Figure 1): the first section, “Pontal d’Entreves – Mont Frety”, has a length of 1700m, elevation differential of 886m, a capacity of 800 persons/hour and cable cars for 80 passengers; the second one, “Mont Frety – Punta Helbronner”, has a length of 2630m, elevation differential of 1276m, a capacity of 600 persons/hour, and cable cars for 75 passengers. The new system is designed for fully rotating cable cars moving at a constant rate of 9.0 m/s. The track requires constructing special cables supports, three for the first section and two for the second one."

The U.S. Bureau of Mines applied process mineralogy to investigate a lead and zinc deposit located near Story Creek, Colville Mining District, Alaska. Mineralization is hosted by the Kayak Shale in veins, veinlets, and breccia. Sphalerite and galena, with supergene anglesite, occur in symmetrical quartz veins and between breccia clasts. The study sample analyzed 2.11 percent Pb, 5.37 percent Zn, 0.014 percent Cu, and 1.2 oz/ton Ag. Analyses of crushed products showed that 33 percent of the sample weight, and more than 50 percent of the Pb and 65 percent of the Zn, are in the minus 850 µ m fraction. Liberated grains of sphalerite and galena were found in crushed products finer than 300 µ m. Beneficiation tests indicate the material is amenable to processing by traditional gravity and flotation techniques.

Genesis 1:28 "And God blessed them and God said he fruitful and multiply and replenish the earth and subdue it and have dominion over it." Genesis 2:15 "And the Lord God made man and put him in the garden to dress it and keep it." Depending on one's perspective, these two verses from the Book of Genesis either complement one another or are in conflict. I believe that they are complementary. What they imply is that where there is privilege, there is responsibility. Privilege comes from the fact that the Lord created the heavens and the earth and he placed man on the earth to have dominion over it. The responsibility that accrues to us comes when the Lord also said that we are accountable for how we handle that which he has given us. The very nature of our responsibilities in resource utilization or, more appropriately, resource management, has changed over time as the nation's needs and priorities have changed. Thus, I have attempted to examine, from a historical perspective, how natural resource policy has evolved, where we are now and what may lie ahead.

Debate on an appropriate, acceptable method of regulating mine and mineral processing wastes has been ongoing since Congress passed the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) on October 21. 1976. Final regulatory determination on which mineral processing wastes are excluded from the RCRA hazardous waste regulations under the Bevill amendment was made by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency on June 13, 1991. Regardless of whether a mining or mineral processing facility?s waste stream(s) lost or maintained its exclusion status under the Bevill amendment, that facility can expect more stringent regulation of affected waste streams. These more stringent regulations will be added to an already complex regulatory maze, which includes the Clean Air Act (CAA), Clean Water Act (CWA), Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA), Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation and Liability Act (CERCLA), Superfund Amendments and Reauthorization Act (SARA), and Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA), as well as state and municipal environmental regulations.

INTRODUCTION The Keystone Tunnel project consists of widening an existing 7.3 m-wide (24 ft) highway tunnel to a width of 13.7 m (45 ft) to provide a three-lane, two-directional highway tunnel. The 13.7 m-wide tunnel was excavated in a staged drill-and-blast sequence through foliated schist, and was supported using pattern rock reinforcement and shotcrete. Notable project features are: the low vertical cover over the tunnel is less than the span of the opening; the project is the second instance where the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) has accepted rock reinforcement as a permanent support element; and the project is the first instance where the FHWA is accepting shotcrete as the final interior surface of the tunnel. This paper covers the design and construction phases of the project. PROJECT DESCRIPTION The South Dakota Department of Transportation (SDDOT) retained Woodward-Clyde Consultants (WCC) to evaluate the feasibility, prepare construction plans and specifications, and provide construction management services for the widening of the Keystone Tunnel. The tunnel is located in the Black Hills National Forest area of South Dakota near the southwest corner of the state. The Keystone Tunnel is on U.S. Highway 16A, about 0.8 km (1/2 mile) north of Keystone which is approximately 32 km (20 miles) south of Rapid City (Figure 1). Highway 16A serves as an important transportation link between Rapid City and the Mount Rushmore National Monument which is located about 2 miles west of Keystone. A compressed-water hydraulic pulse generator (HPG) for nonexplosive blasting of rock and con¬crete is described Energy is stored in the HPG by compressing water to ultrahigh pressure. A large, fastopening valve discharges the com¬pressed water, resulting in a high-energy impulse. The HPG can be used for small-scale bench blasting by discharging the water through a nozzle that is closely fitted into a borehole. A bench blasting system requires an HPG, a drill and an indexing mechanism to allow insertion of the HPG nozzle into a drilled borehole. Systems with discharge energies ranging from 40 to 250 kJ have been used to excavate hard rock, including andesite, granite and quartzite. The largest system can excavate 15 t/h (16.5 stph) of massive quartzite based on a 2-min cycle time for hole drilling. Blasting with an ultrahigh-pressure hydraulic pulse generator was demonstrated as an effective means of excavating hard massive rock under the confined conditions of a tunnel opening or underground sloping panel. Hydraulic blasting provides a continuous mechanized mining capability that is well suited for deep-level mining and urban excavation sites where explosives are prohibited

"The proposed Channel Tunnel is a critical component of the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission’s (SFPUC) Central Bayside System Improvements Project (CBSIP), which is a key element of a $6.9-billion sewer system improvement program to upgrade its aging and seismically vulnerable wastewater facilities. The tunnel will provide gravity conveyance and storage of combined sewage flows from the northeast sector of San Francisco, CA to the Southeast Water Pollution Control Plant for treatment. The tunnel will be approximately 2.7 km (1.7 miles) long and 7.3 m (24 ft) in internal diameter. It will utilize a single-pass precast concrete segmental lining system. Tunneling challenges include excavating with pressurized face tunnel boring machine (TBM) technology through highly variable ground conditions including the Franciscan Complex (rock and mélange), clayey/silty sands, stiff to hard clay (Old Bay Clay) and mixed-face conditions. The project will also require several deep shafts that will be technically challenging. Project backgroundThe SFPUC is a department of the City and County of San Francisco, CA that provides municipal power, drinking water and wastewater services to San Francisco.San Francisco’s combined sewer system collects both wastewater and stormwater in the same sewers, which is then pumped, treated to stringent state standards and discharged into the San Francisco Bay and Pacific Ocean. The sewer system includes tunnels, large storage/transport boxes, 1,600 km (1,000 miles) of collection sewers, 28 pump stations and three wastewater treatment plants. After decades of service, much of the system is nearing the end of its useful life.The existing system is also vulnerable to seismic damage. During the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake, damage to SFPUC wastewater infrastructure was extensive. This included the 3,415 m (11,200-ft) long, 1.7m (66-in.) diameter Channel Force Main, built in 1976, and a critical component of the conveyance system. The Channel Force Main carries 70 percent of the bayside dry weather sewage flow from the northern and central part of the city to the Southeast Water Pollution Control Plant for treatment. It is antiquated, not pile-supported and not constructed to current seismic codes. There is also currently no conveyance redundancy for north/central bayside flows to the treatment plant. Figure 1 shows the SFPUC’s wastewater collection system, the existing Channel Force Main and the project location."

"A ventilation study using tracer gas was conducted at a western US coal mine. The objective of the study was to evaluate the movement of longwall face air exchanges between the face and worked-out area and to document the presence or absence of face airflow pathways between these locations. The mine operator uses a bleederless longwall ventilation system with a back return and a blowing mine ventilation system. The study was conducted on an active panel and included both underground and surface monitoring sites. The study used sulfur hexafluoride (SF6) released as a slug on the longwall face and in the front of the gob inby the face. The velocity of the tracer gas movement in the gob was 0.019 m/s (3.7 fpm). The rate of movement for the overall tracer gas slug averaged about 0.0091 m/s (1.8 fpm). A separate tracer gas test initiated with the release of SF6 into the legs of the first shield showed the existence of more than one pathway of face air in the general direction from the headgate towards the tailgate corner. Maintaining adequate ventilation air on longwall faces is important for worker safety and for the dilution of methane emitted from the face and caved gob. A more detailed characterization of longwall system air and gas movement allows a mine to better assess its ventilation design for controlling gas on the face and in the gob. INTRODUCTION During a series of stakeholder meetings, a near unanimous concern was expressed related to maintenance of effective ventilation airflow on longwall faces. There was a strong interest expressed regarding the impacts of face length and caving characteristics on the ability to maintain adequate face airflow levels. This study seeks to understand and improve a mine operator’s ability to monitor and control ventilation and methane concentrations across the longwall face by assessing airflow variations in terms of roof caving characteristics and face length. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) researchers seek to identify flow paths of ventilation airflow on longwall panels with variations in roof caving characteristics and longwall face lengths. The project research aims to develop an understanding of the role of gas dynamics in variable broken rock, interactions with ventilation airflow and methane concentrations across the longwall face area. The research also addresses continuous ventilation monitoring along the shield line to provide early detection of gas exchanges between face and gob, and thus improve a mine operator’s ability to monitor and control ventilation and methane concentrations around the face. In the context of this paper, the longwall gob refers to the pillared area behind the shields. This work reports on results from one project task to conduct field based research using a tracer gas to describe face air and gob area gas movement in a bleederless longwall ventilation system that incorporated a back return."

The Roybal Raise incorporates the simplicity and low cost of a short bald-headed raise while overcoming the usual impediments to driving a high baldheaded raise. The concept provides for speedy excavation and maximizing the use of the excavated opening, using the rock for structural support. The design is simple: two baldheaded raises are driven parallel to one another, interconnected by dogholes about 8 m (25 ft) apart. In this fashion, the raise can be driven safely and efficiently to 60 m (200 ft) or more. When the raise is complete, the excavation requires no timber for support or partitioning. Rather, the rock itself supports the construction. As a test, a two-compartment Roybal Raise was attempted at the Independence mine in the Willow Creek District of Alaska. One side was driven 2 x 2 m (6 x 6 ft), intended for a manway and equipment skip. The other was driven 1.5 x 1.5 m (5 x 5 ft) for a muck compartment. Both sides were driven at a 65° angle from horizontal and 1 x 1 m (4 x 4 ft) dogholes spanned the 4.6-m (15-ft) pillar between the two compartments. After topping out at 50 m (160 ft), the raise was found to meet all expectations of efficiency, low cost, and practical simplicity. Technique Preparing the Roybal Raise for driving involves no elaborate or costly site prep except assembling materials and providing for muck removal. Normally, the raise muck falls directly onto the sill or track and is picked up either by an overshot mucker or a front-end loader. Raise mining proceeds initially by taking up both compartments simultaneously to the first doghole. It progresses by alternating one side as a clear manway for access with the other side, the active side, as a muck compartment (Fig. 1A). This stage proceeds quickly for no mucking or staging is required to cycle the first three rounds. On the fifth round, in addition to the normal raise round, rib holes are winged out toward the adjacent raise, thus starting the dogholes. Finally, as the sixth raise rounds are drilled and shot, the first doghole is also completed from both sides. The second stage commences by establishing one side as a clear manway for access while the other side, used as a muck compartment, is prepared for active mining. Figure 1B illustrates this step in the succession of raising with the active side advancing to the second doghole level. During this stage, services are maintained through the manway side and equipment is stowed in the doghole during blasting. As the active side advances, muck may be allowed to fill the bottom portion of that side since it is unnecessary to clear it for access. The next stage of raising involves cleaning out the former muck compartment and preparing it for use as a manway. At the same time, the former manway is prepared for advance and use as a muck compartment (Fig. 1C). As in the previous step, the same doghole is used for access and equipment storage. The active side advances until the second doghole is completed, at which point equipment and access are moved to the new doghole. From there, the active side is driven past the second doghole 8 m (25 ft) more to the third doghole level. Again, half of the doghole and the next raise round are mined. The fourth stage involves switch ing back the manway side for the muck side (Fig. ID). The new muck side is driven to the third doghole where equipment storage and access are reestablished. From there, the active side is advanced to the fourth doghole. In the same fashion, the raise is advanced to the top, alternating the manway side with the active side, maintaining access through the inactive manway, and storing equipment in the uppermost doghole. The cycle time for driving each compartment, regardless of the raise height, is greatly improved over that for normal bald-headed raises of comparable height. By storing equipment in the upper-

Stillwater Mining Company has an extensive history with tunnel boring machines (TBM) at the Stillwater and East Boulder underground PGM mines in Montana. The first use of a TBM was a 4 m (13 ft) diameter main beam unit at the Stillwater mine starting in 1988, where 6.4 km (4 mi) of tunnels were driven parallel to the J-M Reef orebody on four different levels. TBM?s were central to the development of the East Boulder Mine as two 4.6 m (15 ft) TBM?s drove two 5,639 m (18,500 ft) parallel tunnels to access the J-M Reef; one of these units is still in service driving a 2,591 m (8,500 ft) access West of the East Boulder mine for the Graham Creek project. For the Blitz Project, a 5.5 m (18 ft) diameter main beam unit will be utilized to drive a 6,858 m (22,500 ft) ventilation and rail haulage level East of the Stillwater mine. TBM?s have been preferred method for developing new mines and sections of the J-M reef as the geometry and geology of the Stillwater Complex allow for faster development compared to conventional methods.

Western Energy Co.'s Rosebud mine in Colstrip, MT, has implemented innovative mining techniques in the past,* and following in that tradition, new techniques for overburden removal were recently introduced at the Montana coal mine. In April 1979, falling coal production left Western Energy in a bind. At that time the company was one of the first to implement a dozer/scraper stripping system for additional stripping capacity. This time around, however, the challenge was to eliminate spoil rehandle with a dragline while digging down 33 in. "Rehandle will increase 20% by going down an additional 3 m past the 24-m level," according to Bob Cope, mine supervisor for Western Energy. To cut this additional expense by eliminating the need to rehandle, Western now uses scrapers to bench down for the dragline. This system utilizes the flexibility of scrapers as earthmoving tools. Although scrapers were originally purchased to fill an immediate need for productive, low-cost overburden stripping, they are now benching and continue to optimize the overall effectiveness of existing draglines. According to the company, the draglines couldn't keep up with production requirements if they had to rehandle spoil material. Benching with the scrapers eliminates spoil rehandle. Western Energy expects to produce 10.6 Mt of coal this year from three active pits in the Rosebud mine. Western estimates that there are enough coal reserves at Rosebud to support a 40-50 year operation. The sub-biturninous coal has an energy value of 9.2-9.4 Mj, 0.87% sulfur, 8% ash, and 20% moisture. Pit A, approximately 610 m long and 45-55 m wide, is the mine's greatest producer. A Marion 8050 dragline with a 46-ms bucket digs 30-33 m to uncover the 7.3-m Rosebud coal seam. Here, the scrapers were put to work benching for the dragline. Long Construction Co., which operates the mine equipment for Western Energy, uses four Caterpillar 637 tandem-powered scrapers, two Cat 631s and two Terex TS-24s. The number and combination of scrapers actually used for benching periodically changes, depending on which ones are needed for topsoil removal and reclamation. Scrapers benched down about 9 m and removed nearly 2.3 Mm of over-burden at pit A. About 1 Mm was placed in a 9-m lift on top of the high-wall at the head of the pit. Injection of inert gases to combat mine fires has been practiced in various parts of the world for a long time. Of late, nitrogen has become the preferred inert gas for control of mine fires and safe salvage of longwall equipment as compared to carbon dioxide or fuel gases produced from burning of fuel. In India, carbon dioxide has been used for fire fighting in a number of mines during the 1960s and 1970s. More recently inert gas produced from burning of fuel oil in surface plants has been used in controlling the atmosphere in fire areas in two mines. In yet other cases, liquid nitrogen has either been poured directly into fire areas in liquid form or injected in gaseous form to keep the fire in check. Nitrogen produced in liquid form in an oxygen plant is more costly than nitrogen produced from PSA (pressure swing adsorption) based plants. A PSA-based plant has been installed in one of the Indian mines in 1986 and more are in the offing. This paper reviews the application of various inert gases in Indian mines and discusses the likely trend of inert gas application in Indian mines in the future.

This paper details the development of these central dispatching formulas and explores the combining of these formulas with other elements to create an integrated dispatching decision. WHY DISPATCHING? Truck dispatching implies and in reality should equate to mine equipment efficiency. Good truck dispatching will yield good mine equipment efficiency while poor truck dispatching will yield the alternative. Truck dispatching can either be automated through a computerized, process or it can be manual. Every mine with haul trucks has a truck dispatching system whether it is recognized or not. Even a system wherein the hauler operators determine where they are going for their next load is a truck dispatching system.

The unique application of a large walking dragline in the mountains of southern West Virginia was developed and implemented by Hobet Mining, Inc. Hobet is an independent operating subsidiary of Ashland Coal and is headquartered at the No. 21 Mine in Boone County, West Virginia, near Danville. Hobet also operates the 07 Mine located in Logan County, West Virginia, near Holden. Both mines are similar in equipment and manpower used; both produce over 2,000,000 tons of clean coal annually. Each site encompasses large, contiguous properties with access to rail service. The larger of the two is the Boone County property; it totals nearly 40,000 acres and has ample reserves. In 1977, Hobet was in the process of constructing a preparation plant (Beth Station) at its 21 Mine site with a capacity for two million tons. One of the first orders of business was to design a mine plan that would provide production for the capacity of the plant. Coal production would come from a more than adequate reserve base using the most economical mining methods available. Hobet looked at different deep and surface mining methods to use in order to develop the property; ultimately, it was determined that the mountaintop removal method with the use of a large dragline was the most economical way to develop reserve. Prior to this time surface mining in mountainous Southern West Virginia was generally done by contour mining and/or augering techniques.

In recent years the widespread problems of air and water pollution generated by both population and industrial expansion have become a major public concern. Therefore, many municipalities are striving to achieve more efficient wastewater treatment processes so these wastewater's can be reintroduced into the waterways of our nation with little or no detrimental effects on the future beneficial use of that water. With this, improved treatment comes an ever increasing volume of wastewater sludge which must be disposed of in a manner of minimal impact on the environment. Furthermore, with demand for energy continually accelerating in this nation, our concern over high oil prices and our increasing dependency on foreign oil sources, there has been an ever growing interest in the largest energy source that are nation has, coal. However, surface mining of coal can cause many environmental problems when adequate precautions are not faithfully adhered to. These problems include water pollution from silt and/or clay erosion and acid runoff, produced by oxidation and hydrolysis of pyrite; i.e., FeS2 + 3/02 + H20 + FeSO4 + H2SO4. One method of wastewater sludge disposal which can utilize large volumes of sludge for a beneficial project that may not compound our environmental problems is spray irrigation, to either depleted farmland or to abandoned strip-mined soils. Sludge is characteristically high in organics, as well as having near neutral to alkaline pH properties. With these two qualities it possesses a potential for neutralizing acid strip mine spoils, which would enhance the establishment of a vegetative ground cover.
