Crushed stone operations have become more difficult due to rising costs of labor and equipment, with the consequent reduction in profit margins. Competition from other operators and the encroachment of vertically integrated companies place severe restrictions on available markets. The seasonal demand for stone precludes any definite production level, and changes in productivity have to be accommodated. These influence profitability, and therefore production plans must be continuously adjusted to keep pace with rapidly changing conditions. The basic problem of stone companies seeking to maximize profits is one of balancing stone production costs, costs of inventory holding and stock-piling, marketing costs and any other charges accruing over time against the selling price of stone. Because of high peak demands, slack period production must be stored and then distributed to supplement peak period production. For a multi-plant operation, there is a need to evaluate at the same time the interaction between the plants and the various marketing sectors. In a multi-plant operation with different production capacities and production costs, stone producers are interested in the answers to the following questions: 1. How much stone should be produced at each plant in each time period? 2. What should be the optimum stone shipment from each plant to each market? 3. What are the effects on net returns and shipping plans, if production capacities are altered at the plants? These questions have many different answers that, will satisfy demands. From the point of production scheduling, the minimum production cost may be the objective. From the inventory standpoint, the best solution will be to synchronize production with sales. However, when the transportation of stone is also considered, the desired end is to achieve that delivered cost which maximizes the company f s net return. Background ground water quality is often used to drive remediation programs at sites with waters affected by mining activities. In the past these levels were sometimes chosen without rigorous statistical and geochemical analysis. A probability distribution approach was used at the Sweetwater Uranium Project to separate a large set of geochemical data into populations that represent contributions from different sources. Natural background populations were identified for major ions, metals, and radionuclides, and were submitted to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission to modify the extent of a Corrective Action Program and to establish control limits for future monitoring.

The Bokan Mountain area on Prince of Wales Island, AK, contains vast quantities of heavy rare earth minerals. To lessen the US dependence on foreign sources, the US Bureau of Mines (USBM) investigated yttrium recovery from this ore. By sulfating the ore at 250 ° C for 1 hr at an H2S04:ore ratio of 1:1 and then water leaching the sulfated material for 1 hr at 20% solids and 25ºC, over 74% of the yttrium, cerium, and lanthanum were solubilized. Solvent extraction (SX), using a synergistic combination of OPAP and DEHPA, selectively loaded 100% of the yttrium. Yttrium was stripped directly as a solid using a 2M, 35 ° C NaOH liquor. When the OPAP/DEHPA mixture was tested in a continuous SX circuit, yttrium loading and stripping were 100% and 96%, respectively. The organic showed excellent recyclability properties with minimal solvent loss.

Although the mineral shortages of twelve to eighteen months ago have given way to oversupply, their memory lingers on. These problems were man-made: booming demand throughout the industrial world, political and industrial unrest and the oil embargo all contributed. But in the minds of many, the shortages conjured up visions of the depletion of the world's mineral resources, a disaster that could be staved off only by drastic curbs on consumption and therefore, curbs on economic growth. A little historical research shows that fears such as this are not inventions of the 1970's. A hundred years ago, for example, the imminent exhaustion of the world's coal supplies was being predicted in Great Britain. The English economist, John Stuart Mill, who was usually more perceptive, wrote a few years earlier that "it is only in the backward countries of the world that increased production is still an important object". And later there was Franklin Roosevelt who said in 1932, "Our industrial plant is built; the problem just now is whether under existing conditions, it is not overbuilt". His concern, in other words, was not with the discovery and exploitation of new natural resources, but with the administration of known resources and with seeking foreign markets for surplus production. In light of copper prices at the time -- just under 6¢ a pound -- that was understandable. These instances illustrate how, throughout the world's industrial history, concern about surpluses of raw materials has alternated with alarm about the adequacy of supplies and with calls for restricting growth.

Recent studies towards dragline excavation efficiency have focused on incrementally achieving automation of the entire excavation cycle. Initial efforts resulted in the development of an automated dragline swing system, which optimizes the swing phase time. However, the system still requires human operation for collision avoidance. For full dragline autonomy, a machine vision system is needed for collision prevention and big rock handling during the ‘swinging’ and ‘digging’ phases of the excavation operation. Previous attempts in this area focused on collision avoidance vision models which estimated the location of the bucket in space in real-time. However, these previous models use image segmentation methods that are neither scalable nor multi-purpose. In this study, a scalable and multi-purpose vision model has been developed for draglines using Convolutional Neural Networks. This vision system averages 82.6% classification accuracy and 91% detection in collision avoidance. It also achieves an 87.32% detection rate in bucket pose estimation tasks. In addition, it averages 80.9% precision and 91.3% recall performance across terrain recognition and oversized rock detection tasks. With minimal modification, the proposed vision system can be adjusted for other automated excavators. INTRODUCTION Complete excavator automation is widely regarded as the next phase in efforts toward improving earthmoving efficiency. Earthmoving often involves complex, forceful interactions between an excavator and the ground. The nature of these interactions depends largely on the type, properties and physical characteristics of the earth material. This process is further complicated by the random occurrence of tree roots, boulders and other such obstructions. Therefore, the ability of a controller to detect changes in the operating conditions, adjust the digging strategy and respond in real-time is of utmost importance. Early studies into autonomous excavation identified some key performance criteria which included the following [1]: • The autonomous excavator must be able to work in any type of earth material. • Its excavation accuracy must be within 50mm. • It should be able to handle different surface and underground obstacles autonomously. • It should be able to operate at the speed of the average operator in any condition. • Its operation should be capable of safe integration with other site systems.

In Pennsylvania, 310 sampled sites of clay and shale have been evaluated for: potential use, chiefly as structural clay products, refractories, and lightweight aggregate; lithology; physical properties tests; fired tests, both quick-fire and rotary kiln; major-element chemical analyses, and quantitative five-component X-ray mineralogy for quartz, mica, feldspar, kaolinite, and chlorite-vermiculite-montmoril-lonite. Approximately 80 percent of the samples are of some potential use. Of 220 shale samples, 84 were potential lightweight aggregate sources and 83 potential brick sources. Binary correlations of test data versus potential use indicate that certain empirically determined parameters may be critical. These are: lithology, particularly for medium to super-duty refractories and lightweight aggregate; kaol-finite content for refractories versus low-temperature fired product sources; quartz content illustrating that there is an apparently necessary minimum quantity for brick; quartz content, which is low in high grades of lightweight aggregate; mica content, which is low for refractories and possibly high for lightweight aggregate; total iron, which is low for refractories and shows a 40 percent minimum for lightweight aggregate; carbon dioxide, which is low for refractorfes, beneficial in lightweight aggregate, and probably restrictive for some tiles choroite yermicalite, which is low for refractoies and possibly beneficial in lightweight aggregate. In Pennsylvania, clay and shale materials constitute one of the state's major economic mineral resources. To date, the testing program indicates considerable development potential in brick, tile, and lightweight aggregate industries, and perhaps a future potential for aluminum from shales that exceed 20 percent A12Q3.

In April 2012, work started on one of the most ambitious construction projects of Austria?s ÖBB-Infrastruktur AG ? the New Semmering Base Tunnel. Scheduled for completion in 2024, the 27.3 km (17 mile) tunnel through the Semmering range will cut the journey time on the south railway connecting Lower Austria and Styria. Before con-struction can begin at the entrance portal and tunnel bores, the work concentrates on the above ground sections with the clearance and excavation of the entrance ramp site. The slope is currently being excavated by the Baubeteiligungsge-sellschaft m.b.H. BBG-GRAZ. The cut face is shored up with shotcrete and permanent self-drilling anchors produced by Minova MAI, an economical bolting solution for softer rock formations. After completing the surface construction work, the twin-bore, single-track tunnel will be cut through the Semmering by conventional and continuous excavation beginning in 2015. Once completed, the New Semmering Base Tunnel will be one of the longest rail tunnels in Austria. It will act as a vital link on the route crossing Europe?s heartland from Northern Germany to Italy, which currently has to climb the steep Semmering pass between Gloggnitz and Mürzzuschlag on a historic mountain railway recognized as one of the UNESCO World Heritage sites. The old route imposes considerable limitations on heavy freight trans-port, and passenger trains have to slow down to a speed of around 50 kph (31 mph). The New Semmering Base Tunnel will bypass this bottleneck and cut 30 minutes off the journey time between Vienna and Graz. It represents a particular advantage for freight traffic, since the new route?s minimal incline of 8.4 percent removes all obstacles for even heavy freight trains.

The Grasberg copper-gold deposit was discovered in Spring 1988, just one year prior to the planned closure of Freeport Indonesia's original Ertsberg open pit copper mine. In spite of Grasberg's remote location, 600m above the Ertsberg, atop a hitherto inaccessible mountain, Freeport-McMoRan brought their latest open pit mine into production in the last week of 1989, less than two years after discovery. This paper describes the start-up of the operation, highlighting synergies drawn from both the original Ertsberg experiences and the current Freeport Indonesia underground mines.

Now in the midst of a full-on cultural shift, they are also key players in the continual effort to re-examine and calibrate practices to meet dynamic and increasingly complex objectives.SME’s technical position statementAs a home for so many technical experts and practitioners, SME has long recognized the importance of a commitment to sustainable development by the mining and minerals industries. In April 2016, the Society formally adopted a technical position on the topic following years of participation in, and support for, related activities. The full position statement appears below. The Cannon Mine is located in Chelan County, near Wenatchee, Washington, at the eastern foot of the Cascade Mountains. The mine is situated about two miles from the Columbia River, in the arid Columbia River Valley. Two hydroelectric dams provide electricity for the area, the Burlington Northern Railroad has a switch yard and loading facilities in Wenatchee. Approximately 25,000 people live in the area. The principal industry is fruit farming. Underground mining techniques are used to provide feed for a 2,000 tpd flotation concentrator at the site. The techniques are low- cost, high productivity methods which allow for a high extraction rate along with a high rate of recovery of the minable reserve.

With the increasing demand for minerals and the decline in the quality of ore reserves, technologies to maximize recovery are critical to a mine?s economic success. Many mining waters exhibit the potential to form hardness-based inorganic scales, which inhibit effective mineral recovery. Often, a continuously-fed chemical deposit control program is implemented by the mine site to inhibit these scales. The use of retractable scale coupons is the current industry standard for monitoring these programs; however, a key drawback to their use is the limited, and sometimes untimely amount of information they provide. A proprietary fouling analyzer has been developed that can be used to continuously monitor the formation of inorganic scales in mining process streams. Consequently, it can be used to continually, and more effectively, communicate the efficacy of an antiscalant program, thereby providing the ability to compare different scale control programs and to optimize their feedrates. Case studies presented validate the applicability of this technology to help optimize mineral recovery.

Industry and regulatory agencies have requested guidance on safe blasting near transmission pipelines. The U.S. Bureau of Mines and AMAX Coal Company have studied surface coal mine overburden blasting near four steel and one PVC pipe-line of 15 to 5l-cm diameter, monitoring vibration, strain, and pressure. Unlike tests simulating construction blasting, these were up to 1000 kg per delay in 3l-cm blastholes. Worst case comparisons showed that 12.7 cm/s blasting vibrations produced strains about 1/4 that of pressurization and 10-18 pct of the ultimate tensile strength. No failures occurred from blasting as close as 15 m which produced vibrations over 60 cm/s.

INTRODUCTION Site characterization using oriented borehole core is the subject of this paper. Borehole core is a standard source of data for rock mechanics investigations. Oriented borehole core provides data whereby the geometric orientation of various geologic discontinuities (faults, joints, bedding, etc.) may be determined. The orientation and strength characteristics of discontinuities are important in many engineering investigations and in particular, in slope stability analyses. In heavily vegetated or soil covered situations, oriented borehole core may provide the only means of assessing the subsurface planes of weakness which characterize the site. The purpose of this paper is to briefly describe various methods or orienting core, core characteristics which may be logged and the methods of processing and using the data for site characterization.

The processing of EAF baghouse dusts from both the specialty steel industry and low alloy producers will be reviewed. In addition, the INMETCO process has been modified so as to recover nickel, chromium and iron from many other waste materials such as pickling solutions or filter cakes, spent nickel and chromium plating baths, carbon refractories from pickling tanks, and super alloy wastes including baghouse bags. INMETCO is the only North American company presently capable of recycling nickel-cadmium batteries by high temperature metals recovery. This, along with the details of INMETCO's BDAT Test Program and results performed to pre-agreed standards with the EPA will be discussed.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) is investigating alternative methods to strip metal-loaded solvent extractants. Hydrolytic, precipitation, and hydrogen pressure stripping all recover metal or metal salts directly from the organic solvent extractant. Pure metals, metallic oxides, or metal salts can be formed, allowing direct production of value-added products. Aspects affecting commercial application are emphasized, including metal recovery from actual ore leach solutions, particle size control, organic modifier and diluent effects on stripping and metal recovery efficiencies, metal grade, seed addition, mixing intensity, recycling efficiency, and reactor plating. Metal separations from copper ore leach solutions and complex waste leach solutions were examined.

"INTRODUCTION Conventional tailing storage and management practices typically utilize engineered facilities, such as ring dikes and valley impoundments. To reduce the environmental costs associated with disposing of mine wastes in tailing storage facilities (TSFs), several beneficial re-use strategies have been developed over the years. For example, thickened tailings have been used for paste backfill. It is common for tails to comprise up to 60% of the material’s total weight and it has been estimated that TSF volumes can be reduced by 60% when using this strategy, (Benzaazoua, et al. 2004). Other beneficial re-use strategies have produced unpaved temporary access roads, hot and cold asphalt, chip seals, self-compacting concrete, and golf course sand traps. This project sampled mine tailings from two different TSFs in Colorado and produced structural concrete that could potentially be used for commercial foundations, sidewalks, and paved roads. The tailings were substituted for the fine aggregates typically found in conventional concrete. The two main objectives of this study were to investigate the structural integrity of the produced concrete samples and the leaching of heavy metals from the resulting concrete. The ratio of tailings to fine aggregate (T/FA) was carefully studied to find if there was a correlation between the substitution rate and the structural integrity. The potential maximum substitution rate was also investigated for the produced concrete specimens. The potential of leaching mining impacted water (MIW) was evaluated by comparing the leachability of the raw mine tailings to the encapsulated tailings by using standard shake extraction prediction tests. MATERIAL AND METHODS Materials The four components that make up the concrete mix design for this project are: cement, coarse aggregate (gravel), fine aggregate (sand and mine tailings), and water. The type I/II ordinary Portland cement (OPC), gravel, and sand came from local cement and concrete companies in Denver, Colorado. Mine tailings were collected from two different TSFs in the Rocky Mountain Region, where Pride of the West TSF in Silverton, CO will be denoted as Site A. The primary metals of interest at the mill site are gold, silver, lead, copper, and zinc. The location of Site B will not be mentioned in this report due to confidentiality agreements with the mining company"

INTRODUCTION In this paper the author will attempt to bridge from the paper work of design and engineering to the reality of implementation. Certain facets of construction are constant to a successful project, no matter the level of technical complexity. Basic to timely, low cost construction are the people assigned to the project. Construction is not accomplished by robots, computers, or speeches; but rather by people. People do however require the avail- ability of equipment and communications to properly complete the work. ORGANIZATION Good organization is the basic requirement of a well implemented construction project. For this paper the author will suggest an organization chart as well as an activity listing that together support the construction activities. There is little difference in the activities or functions needed to construct a small plant or a large one. It is a matter of how much time an individual has to spend on an activity that determines the structure of an organization. The difference between a large and small plant construction job is often described as the multiple hat versus the single hat philosophy. ISO 14000 series are voluntary international standards that address environmental management system standards, environmental auditing, environmental labeling, environmental performance evaluation, and life-cycle assessment. An environmental management system (EMS) is a facet of an organization's structure that addresses the immediate and long-term impact of a company's products, services, and processes on the environment. Many companies in the United States are taking a cautious wait-and-see approach before embracing ISO 14000. A few mining companies are reviewing the standards and using them as guidelines. The paper outlines the status, possible benefits to the mining industry, and options available to a company wanting to become involved in the ISO 14000 standards.

Within the EU-research project "Blasting Control", jointly operated with partners from France, Italy and Greece, between 1992 and 1995, the Department of Mining Engineering of the Montanuniversity Leoben, Austria took over the task to develop a diagnosis system applicable in underground drifting, in order to identify possible reasons for blast failures or poor blast performance. For that purpose 120 m of 12 m2 test galleries were excavated at two different mine sites. For every blast performed the collar and bottom position of every hole drilled, the charged hole length and the drift and face profile of the round blasted were monitored. These 'geometrical" data were put directly from the measuring devices into SURPAC, the mine planning software chosen for data analysis. Based on the data computed, 3D plots comparing actual and planned data were made visible on the screen or as hard copies. Experience from the introduction of this system into a mining operation showed, that the system developed contributes to an improved understanding of the reasons for blast failures and forms the basis for an improved blast design. The soft- ware package SURPAC was also used to train the miners directly at the mine site in order to improve the quality of their work.

Many of the trace elements found in coal are associated with mineral matter, making it possible to remove them by physical coal cleaning. As part of work funded by the Electric Power Research Institute, both conventional and advanced coal cleaning processes were found to provide large reductions in the concentration of many trace elements that, if released into the atmosphere, are considered to be potentially toxic or environmentally harmful. Advanced physical cleaning technologies appear to provide greater reductions than conventional technologies. Chemical cleaning processes may also remove many trace elements, possibly including organically-bound elements such as beryllium. Care must be taken in the disposal of coal cleaning plant refuse because oxidation and leaching of this material can create highly acidic leachate and many trace elements are mobile in an acid environment. Laboratory leaching procedures are potentially useful in determining the degree of risk of water contamination by trace elements should an acid environment form.
